I felt Barry was very nice, and accomedating.

it was a really, really hard class, tho he is very enthusiastic in his teaching
He's a poor speaker and his lectures are extremely dry. He spends most of his time rambling about this he doesn't like, which takes away from what could be interesting otherwise. BORING class. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Passionate speaker; lectures are not boring at all & pertinent to subject matter. Eager to answer questions, clearly outlines course expectations, very helpful. Study guides identical to the tests are given out a week in advance.
My favorite teacher at sonoma. i felt i learned a lot! he is every enthusiastic about what he teaches!
My favorite class I have taken in Sonoma State, as well as my favorite professor! He is very passionate lecturer, very clear, makes Political Science very interesting. For exams he gives a study guide so there are NO surprises!
A very articulate, passionate speaker! Barry will go out of his way to help anyone and is very compassionate.
Awesome.. great speaker. Straight forward tests. I would love to take more classes of his
Barry is a really nice guy. He is smart, passionate, and hates Bush. I like him a lot.
Very good lectures, a warning though: he does tend to digress. If you take good notes and actually do the reading required (including the study guide), you'll do fine. He is more than willing to answer questions as well.
Excellent class, I hope to take more classes of his. Priesler is an excellent and impassioned speaker and genuinely cares about his topics of choice. I learned a lot from him! Plus, he gives out study guides!
Pretty easy teacher if you go to class and study a little for the tests (He gives a study guide which is pretty much everything that will be on the test!) He goes off on stories sometimes, but they are interesting.
Preisler was a really passionate teacher and that is always a good quality. He always got really into the lectures, and his tests werent bad if you did the study guide and read everything. I highly recommend him, I learned a lot from him.
i usually HATE anything that has to do with history, but not anymore. Preisler is great techer. He loves what he does and knows what he's talking about. when explaining, he states it in plain text and does not overwhelm you with vocab. the tests are fully outlined. no suprises, just a lot to know.
Preisler is a brilliant man. Not only is he knowledgeable about anything you ask him about he makes it easy to understand. He is very clear about what he will put on tests and goes through it thoroughly. It makes it easier to learn the topics. He can go off on tangents, but I nearly always found them interesting.
HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING PROFESSORS I'VE HAD AT SONOMA STATE! I'D RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE! He is extremely generous and will go out of his way to help his students...plus he does study group before all of his tests at Charlie Browns...excellent!!!
The BEST professor!! Learned alot!
Loved him. it might be a little difficult for conservative kids, but i thought he was great. his study sessions help so much
HE IS AN AWESOME PROFESSOR. THERE ARE VERY FEW PROFESSORS THAT HAVE SUCH PASSION WITHIN THEIR SUBJECT. AND HE IS ONE OF THEM. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS CLASS TO ANYONE.GO TO OFFICE HOURS IF YOU ARE CONFUSED, HE WILL CLEAR EVERYTHING UP THERE. IT CAN BE DONE! DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK.ASKING IS HELPFUL. YOU CAN SUCCEED. HE CAN HELP YOU GET THERE.
Long, semi-interesting but VERY liberal. And you can get an A as long as you answer Anti-Bush and against anything right wing.
Go to lecture, get a study group and hit up office hours. I enjoyed him and his style, but I love PS; not everyone in my class did though.
Only had one point of view which he pushed down your throat every second of the class period. No balance, all bias = bad teaching!
Let's just say I spent most of the class reading whatever was scribbled on my desk.....my class is three hours long and the man talks faster than my brain processes language, other than that he's swell.
excellent professor, with leftish leanings. Very lecture oriented but I didn't mind because he brings so much to the table. He goes to every length to help students do well. study sessions in and out of class before every test, demanding but fair grading on essay tests, is very understanding about personal or extenuating circumstances and treats students very humanely... very helpful, learned competent and all around good person.
Very intelligent man who has a LOT to say....the only thing that annoyed me about Barry is that he tends to digress, but he's very approachable so it's cool.
Jack Anderson says: BEST ANECDOTES EVER
Great guy. SO smart, kinda funny, very helpful. He lectures for the whole class and he talks pretty fast, but he can be interesting. Just do the study guide and go to his great study sessions before the test and you can get an A/B easily.
I never attend lecture because they are quite boring. Attend study groups and do the reading to get all the information you need for his exams. The information he provides is very liberal biased, but very fascinating and informative. It seems his goal is to make students aware of very important issues that affect us all. Also has an ok sense o humo
He seems like a nice guy, but he is difficult to listen to.
SUPER nice guy. easy to approach, gives make up tests for every test. hated the lectures but loved the class
I really liked his class. He talks very fast, so it is hard to write and follow the lecture, but not impossible. He gives you everything you need for the tests. He is liberal. Really liked him and the class! Lot of reading, but not difficult stuff, just biased.
Just like the other reviews state, Dr Preisler is a really nice professor and very interesting - definitely knows his stuff. PoliSci is definitely not my thing, but nevertheless I found the class informative and very interesting. If u utilize the study guides for the exams, it's a breeze.
It's a tough class. If you show up to the lectures and do the study guides, you'll be fine. You'll have a hard time if you sign up for the three hour class. Good luck!
Great enthusiasm for teaching his subject. Always willing to help a student during non-class hours. Tests are easy as long as you review the provided study guide he gives before every midterm. Too bad he is not a full time professor.
Preisler is one of my favorite professors at SSU. He is always available to talk when you can find him in Charlie Brown's. I missed a few classes, but got the notes from other people and the tests were fine as long as you looked at the study guide before hand.
Impossibly, impossibly dry.
His tests are very easy to come up with and he uses the same basic tests with minor changes every semester. Hard class if you are not good at tests because that's all there is in this one.
Barry Preisler is the biggest badass to have ever roamed this school. His hand movements and body language is something to be learned and used in daily life. He is very knowledgable and is very helpful when you ask for it. I recommended taking Pols to get the full Preisler experience and maybe youll learn more than the California Water Supply
The Pries is definitely right with this guy. Awesome professor, interesting lectures, majestic body movements (the swaying back and forth while saying "Noo not that!" will hit you emotionally like Bambi or Free Willy 2). Just take him...take him and let him lead you towards the promised land A.K.A. the California Aqueduct.
A real gem. He was exceedingly passionate and excited about subject. Had a hard time following lectures - he would jump around like he thought of something great to share and just threw it in. This is a new course, so that may be part of it. Fantastic personality and really cares about teaching and his students. The body language is fantastic!
I'm taking his pols 200 class...five tests and one final..lectures are sort of hard to understand but I do fine on the tests...gives study guides which tell you EXACTLY whats gonna be on the test..tells you which essay questions to study..overall very nice and easy...
Really nice guy, helpful, good lectures. Good grading system. About 5 tests, 1 final. He answers questions if you have them. Assigns interesting books.
He is such a delightful man to watch...but sitting through a 4 hour class with him is no small task. His study guides are 100% what he will out on the tests, no surprises. He grades the essay portion tough but as long as you get the "punchline" you will be fine...and he is incredibly witty...love him
Preisler is a really cool guy. He's very passionate, but sometimes unclear in his lectures for his essays on exams. The study guide is exactly what's on the test. One-on-one help, he's great, patient, and informative. Tells you exactly what you should say in the essay. His tests take a lot of time reading and studying, but easy in the end.
Great teacher! Preisler is awesome and helpful. He is very enthusiastic about the subject matter.
This Class suffered from three issues: 1)4 hours on a tuesday is not good, 2)at least 1 person in the class who couldnt keep their hand down, 3) Barry Has a tendency to go on ridiculously long tangents. When things stayed on topic though, I dont think their are people who can teach as much info as Mr Priseler.
Dr. Preisler is a professor very willing and eager to help the student any way he can, including his lax test extension policy. Tests compromised 100% of the grading in the class, so studying was important. Rather dry, difficult to follow lectures at times-- likely due to subject matter taught rather than the professor himself. Interesting stories.
I enjoyed the subject matter in this class. Although Dr. Preisler does tend to go off on a tangent at times, and is thus hard to follow, if you go back over your notes it's not too difficult to put it all together. This was my 2nd class with Dr Preisler - he's very knowledgeable and very helpful. Only drawback, lots of note taking.
He is very liberal and always goes on crazy tangents. A lot of note taking but i take notes on the tangents too because its interesting info!
Preisler is a good professor although he may be a bit liberal. His tests are straight from the study guides so do them and you'll be fine.. he does not trick you. However he does grade very hard so achieving an A is very tough.
Great instructor! He is liberal but we all have an opinion which shows up regardless. He really cares and wants you to learn, some don't seem to appreciate that.
Dr. Preisler is one of the most kind and interesting people I have ever had the pleasure of having for a teacher. He is totally fair and you always know what to expect on tests. He genuinely cares about his students and I highly recommend him!
Dr. Preisler is, in my opinion, the ideal prof. Through his physical image, knowledge of his topic, and passion, political science is made into a thought provoking and exciting topic. However, I felt that Dr. Preisler was a bit hard on the essay portion of his tests. There were times when I felt he marked me down for using words different than his.
This is my third class I have taken with him and the man is a freaking GENIUS!! No other professor like him anywhere! Controversial sometimes but its only what makes him GREAT! Absolutely would take a class with him anytime!!
Very dry lecture but overall knows what he's talking about and is generally a cool and helpful prof.
Very dry lecture but overall knows what he's talking about and is generally a cool and helpful prof.
At times Preisler's lectures are hard to understand because he jumps from subject to subject and gets sidetracked on details but they are interesting for the most part. The multiple choice portion of his tests are super easy but I struggled on the essay portion. Essay questions are solely based on lecture so you have to go to class.
He is definitely passionate about POLS. I took the friday class that meets once a week so it was very important to not miss class. Sometimes his lectures are hard to follow, but the tests ARE the study guide. Review the study guide and definitely write out essays based on the prompts he gives you so when you take the exam you're ready.
Preisler is an okay teacher. he is a good person, and his saving grace are the study guides for sure, making studying for the test easy. i do feel he is a bit one sided, i am a democrat, but i still do not believe he should ony teach democratic views. he goes over the essay questions the day before the test, so def attend those.
Barry Preisler is my hero. Amazing teacher. Amazing class. Don't be afraid to work though.
The best political science professor at SSU and one of the nicest men you will ever meet. He really cares about his students and is always willing to help you out. His classes are always interesting because he really cares about the subjects that he teaches.
You have to have his views, or else you won't get far with him. He spends class time ranting about political systems he personally doesn't like, and for a political science class, that's just not acceptable.
BORING. You will fall asleep and not want to attend his lectures. But this man will bend over backwards to accommodate anything that you need. Go to the review sessions because they help a lot, trust me. And the tests are word for word what is on the study guide.
Preisler is very old fashioned, very intelligent, and very liberal. Lectures: No visual aids, few handouts, all vocal-must be fast note taker. Homework: Reading, study guides. He rants occassionally but only b/c he has so much to wants to teach. Give lots of tests (6 total), all with essays. You will NOT get A on any essay, ever.Overall good class
Dr. P is one of the best professors I have had-what he taught has been PRICELESS for bringing awareness to the American Crisis. I thought I would hate Political Science and had to take this as Undergrad requirement. The course content and its impact on the rest of my education~incIuding my doctoral program was amazing. Thank you Dr B. P.!
This class is very interesting, his alternate perspectives are awesome. Class is all lecture and the lectures are the essay parts of the tests. The multiple choice is from the book and is very easy. Attend class to hear his lecture so you can write the test essays but he is helpful in his office hours if you want to review your essays.
Great class. If you just do the readings with the study guides he gives you, you'l ace the tests (which are about once ever 1-2 weeks). Great lecturer!
Come to class. Take detailed lecture notes. Write things down exactly as he says them. Memorize the study guide answers. It's not that hard. If you need to make up an exam, Preisler will work with you on that. Preiselr will open your eyes up to a new perspective of major political events you've never seen in that way before.
Hands down, the best instructor of my academic career. Preisler knows so much about every aspect of political science and gives his students a wholistic approach to the subject. Go to class, do the readings, complete the study guides, and go to his study sessions if you want an A in the course. Phenomenal instructor!
WOW! Very refreshing to be taught by a professor who is passionate about his subject. But be warned this class is not easy, compared to other Pols200 classes the course load seems to be that of an upper division course. If you like POLS take this course, you learn A LOT! The best advice I can give about this class is attend all of his office hours!
He's really arrogant you cannot question him or he will pester you. He is rude and overall not here to teach you but to make you think like him. I asked him from where he got his information and he said I din't need to know. I do not like him but you might who knows.
Class lectures are not interesting do not have visual aids, and there is a LOT of reading. Study guides are not clear at all. Tests are long and questions are long and unclear, and there are too many possible answers for each question. He does not grade easily.
Professor Preisler is a good guy, and definitely very passionate about politics, but his lectures were incredibly difficult to follow even for a 4.0 student. Although he gives study guides(literally are the tests)for the exams we had 6 midterm plus a final and an essay on every one! Put in a good amount of effort and you will do fine.
He is very passionate about political science. But if you don't like exams and an essay every other week then he is not for you.
Professor is very passionate, so if your down for that, go for it. Otherwise his tests are long, difficult, and his study guide is vague. He doesnt assign ANY homework but expects you to have read things he didnt tell you to read. soooo ya. im already over it and its only week 3...
Professor Preisler is passionate about his subject (a good thing). No homework, grade based on tests. The study guides are clear and straightforward if you do the reading and fill in the blanks where the "..." are on the study guide. He is there to help you, and he's a nice guy who cares about your grade. I would take his classes again.
He is well educated on the subject, presents what you will need to know clearly in lecture. Grades are only based off of tests, no homework. Essays on each test based on lecture, multiple choice based on reading (not taught in lecture). If you complete the study guides and go to his review sessions you will have no problem getting an A.
MOST BORING CLASS AND ESSAYS AFTER EACH EXAM. YOU CAN TOTALLY GET AN A IF YOU READ AND ATTEND THE STUDY SESSIONS. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. HE HAS A MONOTONE VOICE WHICH PUTS YOU TO SLEEP. AND ONLY GIVES 5 MIN BREAKS SOMETIMES 4! INSTEAD OF THE USUAL 10.
As a non-political science major, the hardest class I have ever taken. If you easily understand polisci, you might have a better time than I did. Material is based solely on his ideas. Assumes every one is a polisci major. Tests are longtough. a 22 page test that is NOT the final is pretty ridiculous. Definitely wouldn't recommend this class
I learned a lot from him, however he's very liberal and he doesn't try to hide it. His lectures were really clear although you have to focus because there are almost no visuals, he just talks. Also he grades the essays really hard. Generally its not that hard if you learn well by listening.
The class is tough since his lectures are boring, he has no visual aids, and the tests are long. Go to the study sessions, they help and he lets you stay in late to finish them if you need more time. I learned a lot. No homework, but a ton of reading for the tests and he tells you exactly what he wants for the essays.
Priesler is most likely my favorite teacher at SSU. Your grade is all tests (MC and essay) and he tests alot, but study guides are very clear. He gives you specific lines to look up in the book. His lectures are very clear and he loves helping and educating his students. He even holds study sessions before each test for the essay questions.
Not an easy class. Lecture gets boring b/c no visual aids. The exams are often & very long, one portion multiple choice, matching, and then essay portion. Essay portion is graded tough & needs to say exactly what he wants. He is very intelligent and respectable. GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS BEFORE THE EXAMS!!! THEY HELP. Get ready to read and listen
Very respectable professor! I love the passion he has because it radiates in his lectures and makes the lectures more interesting. We get an exam every two weeks. The class is structured very well, no surprises. He releases the new study guide the same day after the exam. So it's up to you to put the time and effort to study. Would recommend him!
He's my fav professor in the pols dept. He lectures a lot and I've heard he can be monotone but I didn't think so at all. His lectures were super interesting to me. I took tons of notes. He's super helpful and approachable. He offers lots of extra study opportunities. His study guides are exactly what's on test. 6 tests & 1 final. Essays each test.
His study guides accurately reflect what is on the test nearly word for word but you have tests every two weeks. Study guides are anywhere from 12-20 pages long, a lot of work. Definitely other better teachers to take for a POLS class that give smaller tests and only a few tests in the semester.
If you want to good in the class complete the study guides thoroughly! He only talks about the essay questions for the exams in class. This class was pretty difficult since the study guides were sooo long. But I learned a lot, by far my favorite class since starting college! This is more of an exposé on US politics.
Dr Preisler is an incredibly knowledgeable person with a deep and intricate understanding of political science. I learned so much in this class and I feel like I have a much more through understanding of the political climate both currently and historically. This class is lecture based, but pay attention and youll do great.
There is a test every two weeks which wouldnt be a problem if you didnt have to read a ton for each test. He is very smart and this class wasnt that bad for pols majors but as a non pols major it was very boring and stale.
This professor is a true intellectual. He is very passionate and lectures the entire class without any power points. The exams are multiple choice with an essay section at the end. He gives you study guides so if you take the time to study, you will be fine. If you do not study, you will be screwed. GO TO HIS STUDY SESSIONS BEFORE EXAMS TO PASS!!!
He has exams every 2 weeks that are approximately 20 pages each. The amount of reading required to get a good grade on the multiple choice sections is ridiculous, not to mention extremely tedious. Essays are graded based on your ability to regurgitate what he has said in his 2 hour lecture. You personal opinion will hurt your grade.
Tests are every 2 weeks and the essays are based solely off the lectures while the multiple choice questions are based off the book and books pages he gives out on canvas. The essays are gonna be hardest to pass because he expects you to put exactly what he said during class/at the review.
Nice Professor but tests are every two weeks and they are hard so you have to really study.
Very knowledgeable and will go out of his way to ensure you understand the material. I took 3 courses with him and learned exponentially more with each course. If you have the opportunity, take his course
get ready to spend almost every minute outside class doing the study guides. While the tests are basically the study guides, the amount of time it takes to complete them should be criminal. tests are every other week and are 60-80 multiple choice questions plus an essay, and finding the test date online is impossible. Also never posts grades
Professor Preisler has so much world perspective and knowledge to give his students. I think the experiences he has lived makes his lectures so much more fascinating because he teaches through his real life stories. His study guides are exactly whats on the test so you know what to expect, it is just extensive to work through. Loved this class.
