Teacher says he will test on certain facts, but ends up testing on totally different information. Tests are confusing and he speaks above everybody. More like teaching a 400 level class instead of a 200 level class. Very frustrating.
Very very hard, but if you ask he is very helpful. He wants students to learn the material and demands excellence which is respectable.
I had to admit that the class was tough, however he is willing to stay after his work hours to teach you and make you have better understanding as long as your willing to learn and succeed in class. Take good lecture notes and minimal book reading and youll do fine in this class.
Anatomy & Physiology is very difficult material. Take advantage of Putman! He'll do his best to help you! Focus on his lecture notes (on-line and in class) and try to do the SGQs. Well-organized, he tests to the SGQs.
Great teacher. Cares about his students!
He's a great teacher! The class is extremely hard, but in theory it should be, since you are learning things about the human body to one day be a nurse or doctor, or some other health profession. He teaches well, and as long as you pay attention in class, and read his notes, you should do well! Oh, and don't miss class!
He is by far the most difficult instructor I have ever had. He teaches at a very high university level and this is a community college. He tells you what you need to know and then says go learn it. You must be self directed and a good self-starter to make it through this class. Unless you're a genius, plan on at least 40 hrs a week studying.
He asigned too much busy work and taught the class as i we all had microbiology degrees already, even other instructors advise not to take him!
Very disorganized. Class always used up last minutes or out late. Never needed to bring book to class, hardly used at all.
If I can just warn you all to not take this instructor! He is teaching at McCord AFB right now and has 4 students left in his class. The others have dropped!
Teachers way over your head. Incapable of teaching at the level of the students. Felt like I needed a chemistry degree to even sit in the class. More interest in sounding impressive than conveying the knowledge.
I have taken a lot of professors, but none has made me soak up such vital information as putman. He is one of the best professors I have ever had...if you are entering the medical field, please take him! Our class petitioned to take him next quarter for 242...but the school needs him for other bio classes. He cares! He gives retake tests&xtracredit
Allows students to take exam retakes if they didn't do well the first time around. The course was difficult, but what do you expect? It's human anatomy and physiology! He gives you every opportunity to succeed. An EXCELLENT teacher for a very difficult subject.
Great professor if you plan on the medical or biological sciences.
Both lab partner and I missed different classes, both of us were told we could make it up before we missed, She was allowed to I was not. Would ask for help, none given, just made fun of me. Made rude comments about me infront of class when I was wrong about answers. Glad to help other females.Shows favoritism. Save your GPA dont take his class
He is a difficult instructor and his exams were a challenge, but what makes him a great instructor is that he allows you to take test challenges if you feel that your exam grade wasn't good enough. His exam challenges are not as easy and can be written or oral, so be prepared! He's also quite a comedian, so lectures are never boring with him!
Hard class with tons to learn but I felt he delivered information with some energy and creativity to keep you engaged. Also was willing to connect with you by phone or email and responded quickly.
I've had Mr. Putman for a majority of my pre-nursing courses. I'm very satisfied with the way he teaches. He's not an easy teacher, but he gives you many hints and practice exams prior to an exam. This class is by far the easiest compared to his Chem100, Biol 241 & 242 courses.
Mr Putman is a intereting person. He didn't finish his lesson plan at the end of the quarter. your attendance is nessarily mandatory, but you do get points for asking, or answering questions. He does make himself available for you by e-mail and home phone. He does give you a practice exam and if you study those practice exams you'll pass his tests.
Here at Pierce college you only get 8 weeks for this class. He teaches using a 16 week agenda. So much info is crammed into this class. It's extremely hard to keep up, and there is no way to slow down due to the schedule here. This class is better taken at a university on a 16 week course. Not at 8 weeks. You're almost set up for failure.
I have been taking a full load of online classes for a year and never had a problem passing until now. I found this class very difficult and the professor to be rude when I had issues with the work. He is very picky and his ten point assignments take hours to finish.
Do not take nutrition with him online, although he is helpful his assignments take hours to complete and he's not satisfied untill they are to his level, which is extremely high. In class classes however he is awesome
Do not take this class if you are taking any other courses. I repeatedly went to him because I was concerned about my grade and he was not helpful. The essay questions on the exams were wrong if they were not exactly what he wanted. Don't waste your time, take the course at Ft. Steilacoom.
8 weeks to learn this class is crazy. It can be done if you start ready to study A LOT! 15 hrs a week if you retain info well, or have prior knowledge, more if you don't. Can't cram at the last min for this class and expect to pass. Putman is very helpful and really cares about teaching A&P. I learned more than I thought I could in a short time!
If your goal is to be a doctor or nurse, take his class. He is very fair,he gives you retakes, lets you earn extra credit on exams with added class material. He is just a very good teacher who cares about his students. This class is for those students who are determined to obtain there life goal
I'm a 4.0 student and he ruined it for me. He's picky and confusing. The material is not difficult, but he refuses to accept an assignment until it's 100% perfect in HIS eyes and you have to re-do it several times. The assignments are super nit-picky and not helpful. My correspondence with him was less than satisfactory and he got confused easily.
Well I'm a 4.0 student, and yes, lectures via recordings are long but pace yourself and you'll be fine. You have a 100% chance of getting an A+ on all homework if you re-do what he asks, which most professors won't let you do! Just have to really study hard for the exams, that's where your grade will drop; if you aren't prepared.
Horrible instructor! Makes rude comments. Essay questions must be exact for credit. I wouldn't recommend him. Take another instructor!!!!! Teacher demands 24hrs a week for study time.
Dr. Putman is available to say the least. He is in the classroom 4 hours before class begins, while busy he is more than willing to help you and explain things again and again. He is committed to your LEARNING, not necessarily to your grade, but gives you 2nd 3rd chances to do assignments correctly. Dedicated, expects you to work, rewards efforts
The amount of homework he gives is way too much. He expects you to be a professional already. Homework takes way too much time to complete especially when that time could be used to study! I did not like his teaching style and he was not very helpful when I had questions. Expect to do at least 30hours of homework and that's not counting studying.
Too much homework and only worth 10 points, may take you up to 2 or more hours to finish every times. Useless notes and practice exam. 8 weeks course like a joke. Highly not recommended.
He is awesome! He's tough but definitely worth it. He does give essay questions on exams but he gives them to you a week before & lets you send him your answers so he can review & provide feedback. All you have to do is learn it just like he sends it back! He's got practice exams available for each chapter! He was always willing to help!
You could take an easy version of 241 and 242, or you could take Dr. Putman's classes and be well prepared to enter the healthcare field. Dr. Putman expects students to give their best and has high standards, but he also gives ample opportunities to boost your grade (redo assignments, useful practice exams, test and practical retakes). he is great
Lectures are amazing.
Putman truly cares about his students but wont just give an easy A; you have to work for it. He mentioned several times all throughout the course that he molds his students for nursing programs and PA programs and expects us to work as if we were already in one of those programs. Its a very hard class, but manageable. Do not procrastinate!!
The hardest class I've ever taken. You have to care about your own grade. If you think you don't need to know it, you do. Very in depth anatomy course.
The class itself was not hard. The work he gives takes a lot of time to do. Some assignments can take over an hour or more to complete. His lectures are super long, 2 to 3 hours for each chapter and there are 12 of them. Start working on your last project early, I did not finish in time. He knows his stuff and likes to talk a lot!
I can't say all I want in 350 characters! He knows his stuff, but he is incredibly arrogant! His lectures are long and detailed and you will be expected to memorize nearly 20 pages of front and back notes in the first week. He has unrealistic expectations and furthermore, he made sexist comments in class for which I promptly reported him. HARD NO!
If you struggled with A&P I, are sensitive, and/or a procrastinator/have bad time management skills - do yourself a favor and take a different professor. Prof Putman comes across as kind of abrasive, but he is always willing to help students who help themselves. Ask for help if you need it and be willing to put the time in. Don't expect handouts.
I took this class online, I enjoyed his lectures, they were a little long, but it was way better than reading! Fair grader and responds quickly, everything you need from an online class!
YOU MUST STUDY FOR THIS CLASS! PERIOD! He is tough, but not impossibly tough. Besides, this is A&P, it's not meant to be easy!! He is a more than fair grader, and even gives extra credit. He has an alternative style of humor, so if you're sensitive, don't take him. If you study hard over what he gives you, you will do great! Be lazy and you won't.
He is a wonderful professor. He pushes you to learn your best. He gives so many chances to earn extra credit. If you do not get a good grade on lab quiz, he will give you a chance to retake (oral quiz). He makes things easier to focus and remember. Should take him if you want to REALLY know stuff.
Fantastic professor. Quirky like most science instructors. Tells you exactly what he wants you to know. Lectures long, you wont get out early. Attend class. Gives extra credit on tests, lets you make up quiz and labs. He is very motivated for you to do well. You will have to work hard.
Dr. Putman is the only GOOD bio instructor left at Pierce aside from Korpal. He pushes you and encourages you to do your very best. He provides you with EVERYTHING you need to succeed in his class, its your job to utilize what he gives you. Lectures are actually beneficial, amazing guy & teacher!!!!!
I liked him but he's a pretty hands off instructor/tough grader, lots of extra credit but you will need it to maintain your grade. Multiple choice tests were easy if you study, essays were awful. Not very accessible, his lectures are interesting and he is likable. He does offer a ton of FREE resources, no books just printable info.
Mr. Putman is a very difficult professor. He wants you to study an unrealistic amount of hours for his class. Do NOT take other classes because this one will take all of your time. He gives essay questions on exams and wants them word for word by what he says. He will want you to learn all 206 bones and markers. His lectures are 3 hours long.
I just started this class and its already a hard no. The amount of time and effort that I put in on each assignment for 10-20 points is ridiculous. LOTS of assignments. His feedback is quite rude and belittling. He doesnt explain why he marked something wrong. Thought that I would enjoy this class but Im over it. Dont take this class w/ others!
I am a 4.0 student but this professor is impossible.. answers need to be exactly his way. Way too much work assigned. Very long lecture videos. He gets off topic and is very opinionated. Save yourself the trouble! Do not take him.. I heard things about him but I figured how hard can an online nutrition really be and now my GPA is suffering.
Prof Putman creates his own lecture materials, places up his own photos, and creates his own labs. Plus if you don't like buying the books. However, some of his lectures are outdated, he uses flow charts in power point which is impossible. If you do not use specific words he is looking for in lab, you will get a 0 even if you are correct.
I am a straight A student. Overall 4.0 GPA and this professor makes it nearly impossible to pass his class. I study for HOURS every single day. You can answer a question right but if it is not the way he wanted you to answer, it is wrong. The amount of hours it takes to do a 10 point assignment is ridiculous. The lecture videos are extremely LONG!
Very harsh grader, even if youre right, he will take points off because its not worded how he wants it. Lectures are EXTREMELY long, impossible to keep up if you have a job/other classes. No text book needed, which makes preparing for a test difficult because he bases them heavily on everything he says in lectures and his PPs. Do not recommend.
This professor was the worst professor I have ever had! I have a 3.6 gpa and have never failed a class before and I had to withdraw from this course! I already had a heavy load this quarter but Barry wants it to be perfect which he will give zeros out and the majority of the class fail the tests. Btw the majority of the class have drop the class.
Professor Putman's class is incredibly difficult, do not take his class while having other responsibilities, I spent around 50 hours a week just on his class. He expects perfect recall of his lectures, and tests heavily on the most briefly covered material, detailed essays in exams. I had been a 4.0 student until this class where I got a 2.0.
Putman's feedback is by far the worst. He barely explains anything and often time strips the student of credit where it is due. I spent 40 hours per week on this class and still felt swamped. Often his lab handouts don't even explain the labs to the grade criteria that he wants you to reach. His lectures were often not explained well or organized.
Run. I wish somebody had warned me before taking Putman's class. He gives little to no feedback, unclear instructions/expectations, expects you to read his mind, and is condescending. I spent way over 30 hrs/week on this class. If you take this course, make sure you're not taking other courses, have a job, or family. NO THANK YOU! I left with a C-
GPA is a 3.8 taking his class sure to bring it down. Lab reports had to redo 3 times because his instructions arent clear and Atlas for online labs are less than helpful. Lectures are very very long and timed exams and quizzes are very short. Takes points off of everything if not worded as he would, class is very hard, do not take his class!
This class was unreasonably hard for an online class, it had so many heavy assignments and I felt like they did not prepare me for the tests nor did the practice quizzes before the test . If you plan on taking this class make sure its the ONLY class youre taking because you will not have time for the other ones .
Do not expect this class to be easy! There are a lot of lectures and homework assignments. It is VERY time consuming and I would not recommend taking it with a difficult class. He is a tough grader, BUT he allows you to fix your work and resubmit it. There is also extra credit. You will have to work hard for your grade!
No matter how much effort and 50+ hours a week you put into this class, it still is not enough to please what Professor Putman wants. Your answer may be correct and exact from his lecture, and he still grades you as wrong. Be ready for 40 page lab reports and study guides that don't help with tests.
Let's be honest, Prof. Putman makes any medical career path you choose look like a mole hill. He will lay bare all the information you need to pass the class and also build a firm foundation in biological sciences. Be prepared to pay attention, participate in class and attend all classes. Plus, like always, communication is key. Good luck!
this class sucked the life out of me... Prof. Putman has unrealistic expectations, while I did learn a lot, he always had something neg. to say, even going as far as to email me that he was disappointed in my grade on the first exam. He took extra credit points away, because I did not include information that was NOT asked for in the question.
Professor Putman is extremely difficult to work with, and often does not respond to Canvas messages for days at a time. Grades higher than standard, and completely locks the course until assignments completed to his satisfaction. 3-4+ hour long lectures, no materials. Does not accommodate disabilities. Condescending to students.
His Class was very challenging. No matter what goes in your life his class "matters the most". He is a very challenging grader as well.
NEVER EVER TAKE PROFESSOR PUTMAN FOR ANY CLASS. HE IS THE WORST AND I MEAN THE WORST. I'M SURPRISED PIERCE COLLEGE HASN'T CAUGHT ON AND SURPRISED HE IS THE DEAPRTMENT CHAIR. PROFESSORS SHOULD BE INSPIRATIONAL AND CREATE A LEARNING ENVIORNMENT THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO LEARN. HIS GOAL IS TO MAKE "HIMSELF" FEEL GOOD.
Putman is a beast in his own. He can seem abrasive but he is just direct. His course load is VERY heavy so do NOT take his class with another work heavy course or a full time job. His classes set me up to succeed in nursing school. He is the instructor you want to take if you want to know your stuff. Not someone you take for an easy "A".
Do not recommend. I am a straight A student and he failed every assignment I had after putting in 18+ hours every week. Made me retake the class and did not receive credit. After all he says about he will respond to emails right away, he took 5 days to respond to mine about a question on a assignment and responded after the assignment was due.
This course was extremely difficult, however when it comes down to it, he truly cares about your success in the class as well as your future. He is very detailed and very thorough. Follow all instructions completely for full credit. You can redo all assignments until you get full credit, and can retake all exams.
If his course was the only option available at this school, I would rather enroll myself in another school & take one of their classes with a different professor. Please save yourself the time, money & effort to not take his class. There are plenty of other professors that make these classes far easier & simpler.
He is pretty manipulative, he threatens students by telling them he will take him away from his course, I asked him from kindness to unenroll me because of medical issues but he said that he wouldn't even though I was in the time frame to still drop the class, very unfair and makes and class way more difficult then it seems.
Dr. Barry Putman was very knowledgeable about nutrition science because he is a doctor of Animal Feed Nutrition. Therefore, he defines us human as a species and his lectures were very useful as future healthcare providers and / or as parents what to cook & feed all family. He gives us extra credit if we do a presentation with some food samples! Fun
It almost seems criminal that pierce college would take someone's money and put them in this class. They should have someone take this class to see for themselves what is going on. It felt like Putman was setting u up for failure (and enjoying it on some level). This class ruined my life and put my family through Hell for 3 months.
Very rude, family planned a vacation which was out of my control, given how heavy this class was, i asked for an extension, to which he was COMPLETELY rude about and told me to drop his class, i dont recommend him at all, he will fail you and he is a very tough grader, would give him -5 stars if i could, do not waste your time and money
Professor is very rude! Always assumes that we are only taking one class and that is only his. Never helps anyone understand anything! After correcting you, he will not even help you get the correct answer. Also does not use the canvas Calander because "he doesn't believe in it". Difficult person, if you want to pass, do not take this professor!!!
Very difficult character and hard to understand. I understand that he may be old and understands things differently but the world is changing and he should not be a professor anymore as he is very negative and rude. He always assumes that nobody watches his 3h long lectures, none of his assignments and reviews even help or match up with the exams
Do yourself a favor and don't take any in-person A&P classes with him; you'll drown in work. Online is much easier. Great professor and gives curve and extra grade at end of the quarter. You will be watching 7hrs of lectures a week, not including hw. Great class to take if you have ALOT of time; no full-time job or children.
This has been the worst professor I have encountered at this school. I have spoken with other classmates in other classes that shared the same experiences. This professor is rude, not understanding and no matter how much info you put on your assignments it was never enough. do not take this guy.
By far one of the worst professors I have ever had. He talks to you as if you are a child. It is obvious his style of teaching is very outdated. Also, his lectures are not very informative and are long and tedious. I would not recommend taking his course if you are taking other classes, work full time and/or have a life outside of his class.
confusing lots of work and difficult
His tests was really hard but at least he gave us a preview of what was gonna be on the exam. Did not provided us with any textbook to buy to save money, which i understand but it would be helpful to get one. If you are taking him be sure to have no life outside of class and study at least 20-30 hour per/week with lectures and labs.
he doesn't care if students have full-time job or other classes. he wants handwriting essays every week. even if you have the right answer, he still wants you to answer how he wants.
Dr. Putman is unbearable. Don't get me wrong he KNOWS his stuff but the problem is he expects you to know the stuff as well as you. He is the toughest grader ever, even if you copy directly from the lab manual he will make you redo it. My last straw before I dropped was when he said he couldn't read the writing even though it was clearly legible.
Dr.putman is a good professor had for both 241 242, if you are taking other classes like ochem do not take them together. 5 total exam during quarters, multiplechoice are easy and essay question are a bit hard bc no rubic given. 12+ hours outside of class are needed for lab work or studying. I recommend not working 20+ hours a week, hard work!!
Had for OCE170. He took forever to grade things - twice in the quarter he graded things, making it very hard to know where you stand and how you are doing in the course. He also had a zoom meeting mid-term check in for points that I scheduled and he never showed - I lost the points even though I showed up. Be ready to learn a lot about seaweed.
