It's his first semester and Sierra and he better have more. He is one of the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable profs I've ever had. He's really helpful and keeps class interesting with his many nerdy jokes and songs(!!). All HW is online and all notes come in pkg with book. I came into the class knowing nothing and I've actually learned a lot!

FANTASTIC! He is so much fun, and guess what? You actually LEARN a thing or twelve about Astronomy without any pain! He's great--TAKE HIM :)

What an awesome teacher! He is so hilarious..he is constantly making nerdy jokes and sexual inuendos. I.e. we were looking at the stars in the planetarium and he was describing the outline of Orion, and he drew an imaginary **** w/his laser pointer. He is an awesome teacher!

Funniest teacher I've had in fourteen years of schooling. He knows what hes talking about and delivers a concept multiples ways so that the student WILL understand him. I'm taking his Astro 10 class next term! Only advice is don't take an early class if you can avoid it. He uses projectors so he has to turn down the lights and you may get sleepy.

Mr. Rice is a great teacher, I had little interest in Astronomy prior to taking this class and he opened up my eyes to the universe, literally. Usually after I complete a class, my retention of the subject matter is low, but because he made learning fun, I retained more than I normally would have.

Very helpful If you go to the office hours and need help and he has class notes online that you can print out and take to class. Makes it worth going to class and does little field trips on campus to engage the students.

BEST teacher at Sierra! He keeps the class interesting, fun, and finds interesting ways to relate the science of the class to your life. He really does care about his students and is extremely helpful and funny. Keep in mind though that he is very fast paced so you have to keep up with him, but other than that, just enjoy the class and have fun!

Wow this class was tough. I thought it would be fun and awesome to learn about other life in the universe. He's funny and entertaining. But just goes on and on and on. Lots of hard homework. Tests are SO HARD. Rarely relates to lecture, mostly from the book. He gives test practice online w/ 125 questions and picks 50 of them randomly. Impossible.

What can be said about Dr. Rice that hasn't already been said. This class was fantastic, much much better than I had anticipated. It was easy enough to do the work thanks to his crystal clear instructions. He is hilarious and made a boring subject actually entertaining to listen to. Also, the observing trip he takes you to is amazing!

Mr. Rice is by far one of a kind. How he maintains his class, I have never experienced before. Extremely helpful, attentive to his students and like others said, 110% sense of humor. Astronomy is indeed a very dry topic yet, thanks be to my lucky stars I took this class and he was the teacher.

I took barrys 3rd hr and wished I had him for actual astronomy class! he's funny, and definitely grabs your attention with his stories and lectures. not too hard, but it IS astronomy..lots of work and studying required. I'd reccommend him over any other science teacher though by far!

Best Teacher Of All Time

Explains the material clearly and with a great sense of humor. Makes the course work interesting. It's not an easy course that you can skate through, it requires a lot of studying, but he offers plenty of extra credit. He allowed me to make up a part of the final that I missed and was extremely kind about it- I've never known anyone to do that!

I didn't even care about astronomy when taking this class but Barry Rice has the most awesome teaching style that I enjoyed it every time I went. Best teacher ever, 'nuff said.

He is the funniest teacher I have had so far! He is also a pretty good teacher as well. He makes a lot of things crystal clear. People who don't get a B or higher in his class ARE the ones who dont do the work. You will pass with flying colors as long as you show up and do the work. Would definitely recommend if you are in Astro 2 or 5.

Best teacher I have had. Very enthusiastic. I didn't care about astronomy, just needed a science, but now I love it! Very easy. Homework questions are easy. He gives you the midterm and final questions before. Tons of opportunity for extra credit. Quizzes are really just show up to class and you'll get the points. Berry is supremely knowledgeable!

Professor Rice is great! He's a character and has a passion for astronomy. I found the classes to be difficult, but as long as you use the books, come to class and work at it, he makes the rest possible! I enjoyed most of what I learned, and he is very willing to help :)

In my ranking of the best teachers in Sierra College, Barry Rice is number one, by far. He is humorous,uses clear example and makes the class extremely interesting. His tests are easy if you pay attention, and don't forget to attend your planetarium sessions for your stars and constellations location.

I am absolutely in love with Prof. Rice. He is so hilarious and I find myself always looking forward to his class. The exams require a ton of studying, but it's so interesting that I love studying for it.

Honestly, this has got to be the best teacher on campus. He is so helpful, and is very clear on what he teaches. You use the textbook every week, but not in class. He lectures in class with a powerpoint, but it is not AT ALL boring (i don't like lectures). He makes you laugh by doing dumb things, and he will do whatever he can to help. Take him!!!

I took his Astro2 class and I'm glad I did. You are required to do homework online, but he is very clear with the information and is always available to clarify his lecture during lab. It helped to have my lab immediately after his lecture! Prof Rice is highly energetic and makes what could be a boring topic interesting and fun! Highly Recommend!

Amazing professor. Don't miss any classes, do all the extra credit, and pay attention. Should be pretty tough not to get an A. I finished the class with 510500 points because he made like 35-40 points of extra credit available throughout the semester.

I absolutely loved Prof. Rice's class. He's funny, intelligent, and very helpful. Some of the homework had god-awful math, but he's always there to help if needed. The extra credit requirement was only one page long on any topic related to astronomy. Third hour was extra interesting too.

Professor Rice is the second best teacher I have had in the entirety of my lifetime. Very responsible with the curriculum, take up EVERY minute of the 2 hour lecture (but makes it worth while) and is amazingly clear. Your participation can change your grade from a low B to a high A! I took Professor Rice's class in Spring of 2015. I was reasonably interested in the subject but not crazy about it. While the material was average, it was never a dull day in class! I am super grateful for his humor and helpfulness. He was always willing to listen to students questions and answer them, even if they were slightly off topic.

This class was so much fun! Almost every lecture will blow your mind in the best way. This prof makes the most unfathomable concepts of astrophysics somewhat understandable (which is saying a lot). This is a class for people who love astronomy and just want to talk about how amazing the universe is. Homework is light, readings are from Wikipedia.

The only reason I would ever take an 8 am class again. A super energetic, passionate professor who makes the somewhat dry subject of Astronomy interesting and fun to learn. I did not read the textbook once, as all of the homework answers were online. Memorize the test questions on the Astro website, do extra credit, pay attention, and you're good.

Yes, there's homework, but what class doesn't? Dr. Rice makes learning fun and of course he will not "give" you a grade, you've got to earn it. If you do your homework, show up to class (and not sleep), practice the test banks, study the Power Points, and just BE THERE, you should get an A. Astro 7 is probably the best class I've taken at Sierra.

The class was pretty interesting and I recommend it to anyone who has not taken an astronomy class before, because it was a good introduction. However, be prepared for the teacher to make A LOT of offensive jokes against religion. So if you do practice a religion, just try not to be offended.

Professor Rice is very enthusiastic about his job and it's clear how much he loves his subject. His lectures are interesting, however somehow I still found myself dozing off. Assigns many extra-credit opportunities and homework is easy. Tests are also easy, he provides a study guide that has the same questions on the test.

Barry is a pretty funny guy. He is very entertaining and lectures are interesting. The grading was straightforward, he offers lots of extra credit, and he prepares students well for the midterm and final. Getting an A is doable if you put in the effort! He had a hard time hiding his biased view against religious beliefs, which he expressed openly.

Professor Rice was a very engaging and hilarious professor. I would not have survived a 3 hour class if it weren't for him. He made the subject interesting to learn/ easy to follow. The take home test was hard, but the other half was easy. The final was just a lot of memorizing constellations, multiple choice answers, and group work. Not an easy A.

Barry is a hilarious professor & it made me look forward to going to lecture. If you aren't interested in the material he will make it interesting. Homework was short & easy & there wasn't too much. Hands down best teacher I've ever had. I would leave class with my jaw hurting sometimes from laughing so much. The lectures are very engaging and he still makes some of the more boring chapters interesting. This isn't the kind of class where you show up and get an A for doing nothing, but he's a great teacher and if you listen you'll do just fine.

The only drawback to taking this professor is that every other professor after him will seem mediocre by comparison. I am 1 year into my master's program and he is STILL hands down the best professor I have ever had by a landslide. Do yourself a huge favor and take him for Astronomy.

I'm currently taking my second class with this professor. He hates me because I doodle all over my labs but he's really down to earth and makes it worth that drive to school everyday.

This was a fantastic class taught by an excellent teacher. He really is a caring teacher, he will see you in his office hours to work out what is wrong on practice tests. There is some extra credit available, and he's open to new ideas for extra credit if it is related to Astronomy, or physics. There is no book, but powerpoints available online.

Dr. Rice is more than just three choices. He actually makes learning fun and very understandable. He's very down-to-earth.

Excellent prof! He is super intense, but kind and understanding. Most will admire that aspect of his personality and teaching style. This guy has accomplished a lot and is extremely knowledgable. Labs can be difficult and he grades them like an accountant, but you'll learn the material and earn the grade you deserve. Take this class!

Barry is the best of the best! For Observational Astronomy or Intro to Stars and Galaxies his course was both entertaining and intriguing. All the assignments are very straightforward. Study for the finals and you'll have nothing to worry about. Add the class and prepare yourself to fall in love with Barry (and Astronomy).

Go to every class, it definitely helps you understand the material much faster than going straight to the book to read about it. He gives you a manageable work load, and is straightfoward in what he expects of you.

Super funny dude, easy class. Graded on weekly HW, in class worksheets, midterm, & final. Also, this class is not a lab in itself. . . . there is a "third hour" but it is not considered a lab. Astro 11 is the lab to this class.

Barry Rice is the best instructor at Sierra College. His lectures keep you interested in what he is saying and are hilarious yet educational. You get assigned weekly homework which takes about 10 minutes to complete (very easy). Although he says you need a textbook, you don't. The midterm and final are the only two exams you will have.

Professor Rice was AMAZING!!!! I loved him so much. If youre overly sensitive though, I dont recommend taking his class... he loves to joke around (but it makes the class fun). Professor rice has been my favorite at Sierra so far. Hes hilarious and really passionate about astronomy. He gives the multiple choice questions from the midterm/final in advance so as long as you study them beforehand its an easy A. Lots of extra credit is offered as well. I was nervous about this class at first, but in the end I loved it.

For astronomy lab, there were labs every day. One observing trip which was really educational. He made it easy for you to succeed as long as you wanted to. One quiz, one midterm, and one final. Grades are not weighted in his classes. It is all a points system, which is nice. He has a spunky and encouraging attitude, and wants you to learn.

This is a great class, but be ready to work. There are a LOT of small assignments that really add up. Online homework due weekly, easy in class assignments daily. Makes material interesting. Midterm/final weeks have multiple tests. For a portion of each he gives a multiple choice test bank which will be verbatim on the tests. Amazing professor!

Clear study guides for tests. Simple online assignments from home. Amazing fun lectures. Cares about his students and what he teaches. Lots of opportunity for extra credit. Total nerd who gives real life advice.

This is my last semester at Sierra and I have to say this is my favorite professor. He is hilarious! I laugh every single class which is a great start to my day. The first two weeks of class I was scared it would be too hard for me especially with the math but I currently have an A+ in the class. Its important to be in class everyday!

Professor Rice is simply hilarious. Most of the reviews here do him justice, he's truly just a great professor and his class is difficult but he makes it more than doable if you try. In the future I might sit in on his classes just for entertainment and to learn insanely cool science things - he's really just an amazing lecturer.

Professor Rice is an awesome choice for the Astronomy 11 Lab class. A few pointers would be to show up for class, because there are labs due everyday that cannot be turned in late. There are 2 tests (in addition to normal labs) and a sundial project. Make sure to study for the tests OR ELSE... They are open note/open lab but you study regardless.

Took Professor Rice on a required science but he made learning fun. Pay attention in lectures and read the textbook and the class is a breeze.

Prof Rice is genuinely an S-tier professor. Deserves to be teaching at higher up schools. Many people claim their professors are "funny" but take my word, Prof rice is actually funny. With online classes, its so easy to skip recorded lectures ,despite this, I always watched Barry's because he mixed his passion and humor into each one.

Best teacher Ive had. Hes definitely a Trekkie and uses Star Trek backgrounds in his lectures. Kinda a nerdy brilliant down to earth professor who has his degree in astrophysics. I wish all my teachers were this engaging

Great Professor who has made learning astronomy online very enjoyable through high-quality recorded lectures.

Professor Rice is extremely passionate about his courses and it shows! He takes extra time to create videos to guide you in all assignments and lectures. He was available for ZOOM calls several times a week and was always more than willing to help and guide us with questions we had for him. This is a course that you are sad when it is over!

Professor Rice is amazing!! His lecture are so funny and very enjoyable to watch; 20 mins goes by super fast when watching him. He works hard making sure you understand what is going on each week by using useful examples. Definitely take him!!

Love him! Took him online, lectures were pre-recorded and clear and entertaining. He is passionate (a little nerdy) with a snarky sense of humor and is willing to help during his regular office hours, so if you finish your work ahead of time and review it with him he will help you with the answers. Any math hmwk always had a video on how to do it

I'm not a fan of science at all but I appreciated taking his class. He's very organized so you know what to expect every week. He puts effort in to his lectures and tries to make them as entertaining as possible. You can tell he's passionate about teaching. He doesn't accept late work. Midterm and Final are very straight forward with study guide.

Not a difficult class by any means. A little bit of a time investment with the amount of homework, but all of it is fun if you let it be. Prof. Rice is incredibly entertaining and a giant geek who wants nothing more than to get you to care about the things he cares about. Be careful though, you might get inspired and change your major.

Best teacher I've ever had. He structures the class so you get out what you put into it. Its easy to fill out the test bank and get a B but reading the book and getting the A also a good option. His lectures are a bit slow but I still found them very interesting worth my time. He really made learning about astronomy fun.

Prof Rice is super outgoing and funny. He tries to make his lectures as engaging and fun as possible. You won't regret taking him. There are 2-4 long lectures per week with mandatory labs. 3 part midterm and final exams could be difficult if don't pay attention or do the work correctly. Offers to meet on zoom to talk abt the labs. Has 5 extracredit

Dr. Rice is an amazing teacher. He took a course that should be taught on ground and still made it an amazing and fun experience in an on line environment. His lectures are engaging and filled with humour. He genuinely cares about his students and if you are ever confused with the course material, he is happy to meet with you and clarify it.

This class was pretty hard for me but I did enjoy the class and Professor Rice is really helpful, caring and funny. You will have to work hard for your grade but he gives plenty of extra credit! I ended up with 105% for my final grade.

You don't meet too many professors that truly show just how much they love what they are teaching. He did an amazing job in turning an on campus class into an online course. His directions to assignments are very clear to understand. He provides extra credit to help boost your grade a little. I would take a class with him again. Funny, and caring!

I love Professor Rice so much. Hes super easy, caring, doesnt give out lots of homework, his lectures are easy to understand. He also allows his students to work with others on the midterm and final. Overall, such a great professor and would HIGHLY recommend taking him. Im taking him again for sure.

He is a great professor, definitely take if you want to to go into that field. The class is boring if you are not going into this for your degree. Gives you decent amount of hw and the tests are actually not that bad. Multiple choice has a study guide with all the questions in the test, and you can use the study guide.

I took Professor Rices online course. He is so charismatic and really loves what hes teaching. If you watch the lectures and stay engaged its a very easy A. Havent seen a professor that cares more about what theyre doing than he does. He tries to make his lectures very engaging and the tests arent hard if youre willing to watch the lectures.

I absolutely loved my time in his class. He was very clear and concise in the work he wants done and explains it very plainly. He made the concepts easy to understand and the labs fairly simple. Super funny guy too (absolutely loves Star Trek). Helps out in class a lot with the labs and wants his students to succeed. Amazing professor.

I took Rice for ASTRO002 and ASTRO011 and both were absolutely amazing classes. He teaches things in an engaging way, makes things fun, and really enjoys the curriculum and it shows! Please take him if you're considering ASTRO studies!

Hello! I took the summer class for Astronomy 2. There is a lot of reading and a moderate workload for this class. The hardest part of this class for me was the Mylab and Mastering assignments. Also, attend the zoom meetings. They are not mandatory but getting extra help or double-checking work WILL bring your scores up. Very fun professor too.

Wonderful professor! This is the FIRST time I've ever posted a review in my whole time at college. I took ASTR 5 along with two other classes in the summer. His lectures are entertaining and virtually immersive, which makes it easier to understand astronomy. If you complete the weekly assignments and pay attention to the lectures, you'll do great.

I took the class in Spring of 2022 and we were half online and half in person, both ways were great with Prof Rice! I'm taking 2 more of his classes this semester, lots of Extra Credit Options and he explains everything you need and will answer any questions you have. He's very helpful with any problems and recommends you reach out to him!

Awesome professor, had him for ASTR11 and 5. He is great, gives good lectures that are fun and easy to follow, and shows that he cares about you getting the material.

AMAZING Professor, this is my 3rd class with him. He is super funny, strict about deadlines, but honestly they are easy assignments so just do them. Offers a LOT of extra credit. Overall very nice guy, super into star trek, but honestly makes the class more fun! His lectures are super interesting, ask Questions! Definitely take this class!!!

I LOVED him. I took him online and the class was very well organized. His lectures are funny and you can zoom once a week to go over labs, guaranteeing 100% on all of them. Of course it's astronomy so there will be work to do to understand everything. If you need that class, please take Barry he is the best.

This was a phenomenal class! The lectures are very engaging, the homework is pretty straightforward, and you'll only have 4 online tests throughout (each having a test bank btw)! If you love Astronomy or if you just need to take a physical science class for credit, I highly recommend taking Professor Rice!

Literally Professor Rice is amazing. His lectures are entertaining and informative and he also has a lot passion for what he does and that inspires his students a lot. This corse does move fast (as summer classes do) but I am able to complete all the work for this course in two days. Barry is a gem and I highly recommend him to anyone!

Barry is truly one of my favorite professors I have ever had! He is so helpful, caring and understanding and he makes learning about the universe more fun than I ever thought it could be. Best professor I've ever had, this was the first science class I've enjoyed since elementary school. I just took it to fulfill a general ed requirement and it was so good I'm taking his Stars and Galaxies course next year! Very clear grading criteria and expectations. Super engaging lectures, and he's a very memorable person for sure.

Prof Rice class was like being at a comedy show sometimes. To be remembered for laughing so much. He's a great instructor. Blunt yes, a smartass at times, yes---but see you thru to success if you put forth the care, absolutely. Professor Rice's astro 2 and 11 courses have been some of the best classes I have had the pleasure of taking. Professor Rice was always upbeat and excited to teach the class with his lectures. The classes weren't too hard, If you just put in the time in and study you will be fine. He gives you the necessary resources to be successful. Def Take him!

Absolutely loved this class. If you love speculating about life on other planets, this is the class for you. Awesome professor, incredibly funny yet also very passionate about what he teaches. Definitely recommend taking any of his classes.

Great class and a great professor. Really interesting lectures that prepare you for the exams. The professor is really funny and a very interesting guy. Classes discussions are awesome and very well monitored while still giving liberty for everyone to express their thoughts. I had no interest in Astronomy but now I want to take another class!

I had him for ASTRO 5 (stars and galaxies) and ASTRO 11 (lab). These were the classes I looked forward to. Does he say a lot of out of pocket things... yes. But that is the joy of his class. Homework is easy :D. When he explains topics he will stare into your soul to get you to understand pulsars and space dust. Hope you like star trek. 10/10

Very passionate about astronomy and he's hilarious. He puts in a lot of effort to make sure everyone understands the topic. Quite a bit of reading, but not overwhelmingly much. Absolutely recommend, definitely the best professor I had so far.

Professor Rice's classes are always a blast! His lectures are entertaining and informative, and he provides great resources to help you succeed. The material can be challenging, but with unstuck ai and diligent studying, you'll be just fine.

Professor Rice is exceptional at what he does. I took this class for my GE but ended up enjoying it way more than expected and am now convinced I want to take another. It is difficult, has lots of reading from the textbook and assignments, but lectures are always interesting and fun. 100% recommend (especially if you're into Star Trek/Star Wars).

The professor is always cheerful and fun. His lectures are interesting, but there is homework every week. There is a multiple choice test for the Midterm (60% of the test bank provided on Day 1), while the Final includes constellation naming, interactive group activity, and a multiple choice (100% of test bank). Extra credit is offered a lot.

Amazing Teacher, lectures are entertaining and make sense. You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. Deadlines do matter but extra credit is offered, and some memorization is required for midterms/final. I definitely recommend taking the lab along with the class. Sir Rice is the goat.

Simply the BEST!! He is such a passionate and hilarious professor, which results in engaging, yet informative lectures. You do kind of have to attend in-person because you get points from writing down 5 facts (which he provides) from the PowerPoint. There is weekly homework- multiple choice questions through Pearson based off the textbook reading.

BEST Astro professor EVER!! This lab class is pretty easy to follow along and complete, if you do the prelabs, prelectures, and actual paper labs - I know that sounds like a lot, but it isn't! He provides guidance throughout the lab, talking to each group. Online quizzes (pretty easy and open-book) and a sundial project at the end.

This Professor is AMAZING! He is so much fun, understanding and answers any questions you need. He was a breath of fresh-air and filled the room with great energy. The class itself was a little difficult, I would recommend taking it with a friend but overall his lectures are very thought-out and gives you multiple resources and chances to succeed.

Rice is the best. He makes lectures and class fun, interesting, and keeps everyone on their toes. His bubbly personaility shines brightly and he made coming to class fun. I did Tuesday and Thursday classes, and if I finished early on Tuesday, I didn't have to come back Thursday! Only 4 quizzes and extra credit was offered! Mr. Rice will be missed.

Professor Rice is so so so fun (he lectures in Star Trek uniforms often)! His lectures and subject matter were all made to be as interesting as possible while still being informative. My favorite class of the semester for sure.

Professor Rice's class was a subject I wasn't very interested in to begin with. However, by the end of the class, I was completely immersed in the topic. He is a fun instructor, explains things well, and is very experienced in the field. His lectures are super fascinating, and I learned so much from his course. He's awesome!

Professor Rice is going down in history as the GOAT. He's eccentric which keeps the lectures engaging and comical. The material can be dense, but he elaborates well enough for anyone to understand. Midterm and Finals are made convenient to study for. Make sure you tell him Star Wars is better than Star Trek.
