This guy sucks at teaching. He thinks he's better than everyone in the class because he knows more about the subject. F-him. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR CLASS!!!! HE SUCKS!!!!
He thinks he is the smartest guy on the planet and he treats students like their stupid. His test are extremly difficult
i've never had a worse experience with a professor. he will talk to you like you just fell off the short bus. his teaching methods are horrible and his class is ridiculously hard.
this guys sucks
No Comments
The only good thing was he has no attendance policy. And since the class is pretty boring it was hard to go every day. For an intro course, he expects everyone to have more knowledge than is possible. Not the worse class I've had though.
If you have any passion for music, DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS MAN! He is not only the most condescending person on the planet, but he gets his jollies off of making you feel like an idiot in class. Stay away, for the love of God, STAY AWAY!
do not take this class
even if ur on his good side he looks at and treats everyone like you are less than him.. test ?s are tricky sometimes and it's no use to argue w/ him about them.. it sucks i would recommend another art basic studies course
My ass dropped that class after day 2. Some kid the first day told me it was his second time in there and that his tests are sick.. glad i bounced
This man is the worst professor you will ever have! He is a smart a**. He doesn't give you the whole class period for your tests so you almost don't have time to complete them. Most boring class ever! Do not take this class!!
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD, OR PROBABLY EVER WILL HAVE. CONDESCENDING, DIFFICULT, & UNCLEAR. THE ONLY WAY TO GET AN A IN HIS CLASS IS TO PUT HIM IN HIS PLACE...SERIOUSLY
OMG I HATE THIS GUY, HE IS THE WORST AND MOST BORING PROFESSOR EVER!
He goes out of his way to help you understand, and is really passionate. His tests are really hard, and include dates even though he says they wont. Its too hard to take as a basic studies, take something easier. classes are the most boring ever.
Do not take him for any class. He's condesending, he doesnt care about you, and he puts things on the test that he says wont be on there. Worst teacher I've had at UNCW.
TERRIBLE! WORST CLASS I'VE EVERRRR TAKEN!
If you need to take a fine arts basic study, do not take this class. It could be a cool class, but he is awful. He gives you terrible class notes. His tests are so hard and do not even cover material you talk about in class. The tests always focus on dates even though he says they wont.
Professor was very unhelpful and very unclear. Very rude as well. This was a music class and at election time spent three classes telling us why President Bush is the devil. Tells you things are going to be on the test, and then they arent. Then on the test you see things you have never heard of.
the only way to get through his class is to let him know that you aren't going to take his crap. he made me have a "meeting" with him to discuss my attitude and i basically told him why i hated him so much--and miraculously i made an A as a result. class was still ridiculously hard though.
Hands down the worst teacher at Wilmington. He is very unclear and sloppy when writing things on the board. If you have a question in class or out just save it because he will get on to you about not listening even though you have the question because you couldn't understand him.HEHASUGLYEYEBROWS!
i took his class 3 years ago and he is still--hands down--the worst professor i have ever had. avoid his classes at all cost. he has a terrible case of little-man syndrome and takes it out on his students. he checked attendance in my class and i dreaded EVERY DAY i went in there.
Very smart and opinionative, but very eager and helpful.

i will remember this short sweaty man forever as being one of the worst teachers ever. If you take a class with him, whatever grade you think you deserve, drop it a grade lower and that's what you'll get.
Just terrible.
Enjoyed the class, found it hard, but interesting!
I hate his teaching methods. You think you're all cool with him, till he out of no where gives you a sucky grade. He'll talk forever and ever, and make your lesson last twice as long. Exactly what some other kid said. Take a grade you THINK you'll get a drop it a whole letter grade. what a weirdo.
I took American Music with him and he isn't as bad as people are saying. He wants to teach and really enjoys it. Class can be a little boring sometimes. He gives you 3 pages to review from for the tests. I would recommend it, really a good prof. I liked the class.
Good piano teacher. Can be a little intimidating if you aren't a music major (like me) because he is so skilled. A bit tough on grading.
DON'T TAKE IT. his notes are so random.. he has a good study guide, but he doesn't post it until late at night THE NIGHT BEFORE THE EXAM. His tests are horrible and really aren't fair. He has no sympathy for anyone who isn't a music major either! There's a paper, which seems easy... until you get your grade back..
Worst Professor at uncw boring test are hard. very smart guy but a horrible teacher . dont take if possible
Great prof. As a music minor I have him for private applied lessons. Is easy to get along with, understanding and generally a good teacher. At times can be challenging but is always needed. Would recommend for a good class, but not for those looking just to fill hours.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Completely all over the place notes, no book, he's not helpful at all, and he's one of those guys who are SO smart that they don't know how to explain things. Rude and makes you feel stupid.
As a visiting student for the summer I found this class to be extremely easy. As long as you know who composed what and listened to the lectures the tests are simple. Dr. Salwen was also very nice and a great pianist.
TERRIBLE!!! This professor is absolutely horrible. I've taken music my whole life and never had any trouble but he literally hated me; if you weren't a suck up he didn't care. One book for thirty students in the library and he is completely scatterbrained. Very smart and talented but horrible teacher.
Horrible teacher. His teaching style is all over the place. he is extremely smart but a horrible teacher. he is overly repetitive. he constantly rambles on about things that are completely irrelevant. he attempts to teach history that is irrelevant to the class, most of which is incorrect. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
dr salwen is an awful teacher. extremely unorganized. his syllabus claims that he does not take attendance but he passes around a sign in sheet every class. i just received a study guide from him at 12:49 am THE DAY OF THE TEST!!!!! horrific teacher. dont take his classes unless you have no choice.
AWFUL TEACHER...some how i got A's on all of the tests but he gave me a B- in the class.
Ok I had him for music camp in the summer. OMG I could not stop looking at the clock waiting for the 45 minutes to end. I enjor music, but somehow he makes it rather uninteresting. He just scribbles on the board and is really all over He also called my piano piece the wrong name in masterclass, and it was an embarrassing name in front of everybody
He's an absolutely horrible teacher. He doesn't teach half of the material that will be on the test, and goes on tangents about random things that make no sense. He won't answer questions and gets angry when you ask them. If you can stay away from his class, do it. He'll fail you just because he can.
He does not let you ask questions he just gets mad and tells you its in the book. Terrible teacher!! Should not be teaching a basic music class, I think he is so smart in music that he expects everyone else too and is socially awkward. AVOID his class!!
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE HIS MUS 115 CLASS!!! The tests are impossible to pass and he doesn't tell you what is going to be on the test. If you do take him tho go to class everyday and read the book from cover to cover. Horrible intro to music teacher.
Awful teacher. Very socially awkward and although he is very knoledgeable, he doesn't have the slightest clue about teaching. He speaks too fast, jumps all over the place with concepts, and just reads quotes all class long. I am a dedicated musician and found his class unbearable. He's almost made me change my major just so I won't have to have him
This guy will not stop talking about **** and politics. He is a total jerk and is definitely not straight. I hate him so much, he can't teach, smile, or do anything right. He smells like a goat and sweats on me while I play piano.
Yes, he is an awkward fellow, but I personally find him to be hilarious. I think a lot of the things that people find as "mean" that he says are not meant to be. He just talks without thinking a lot. Despite rambling, he does have a wealth of knowledge, and although you might not want to have him for several classes, I have liked having him.
I am literally sitting in this guys class right now and have not listened to one word that hes said. He is the most annoying little man and I can not stand him. Class is COMPLETELY useless. Does not use a book, notes or say anything useful enough to write down. Take it if you enjoy slitting your wrists vertically & being late to your next class.
On a serious note, this is the worst class I've ever had at uncw. I was gone for a week for a death in my family and had a test the day I came back that he wouldn't let me make up and I failed. Afterwards he said "oh I guess I should have let you make it up." He's very arrogant and is very condescending. DON'T take this class. Not worth it at ALL.
I knew he wasn't a great teacher going in to it, but I decided to stick with him. Worst decision I've ever made. It was my hardest class and all other music teachers are an easy A. It was my most stressful class and NOT WORTH IT. Seriously, switch out or your GPA will suffer. I highly regret not switching teachers.
Dr. Salwen is a great teacher and is very passionate about what he is teaching. He doesn't take attendance but in order to make a good grade you must go to class. He uses the book a lot but he also teaches things not in the book as well. Don't take the class if you are not interested in the material. I really enjoyed the class.
He WILL be five minutes late, and he WILL hold class five minutes over. Otherwise, he is a 5' tall, giggly little pianist who really knows his stuff--BUT, cannot make class interesting, no matter how hard he tries. He's scattered, and all over the place, and basically just chats about random topics and shows random youtube videos and wikipedia bi
i got a C- from this joke of a class, brought my gpa down to a 3.2. Trust me, dont take this class, if u cant get into any other fine arts class, wait another semester... i warned you
He is always late for class, but keeps you late. He is not helpful and is rude to his students. He is very smart, but does not know how to teach. He can't make it interesting.
I absolutely despise this class more than anything else in my life current. This professor is the most annoying little man i have ever. And on top of his class being the most boring thing i have ever had to sit through it is also extremely hard. i got an A- but that was with studying my ass off. this class is so not worth it! avoid at all costs!!
This German Music class was with a learning community paired with a German Lit class. This man is a horrendous teacher, does not accept opinions, is rude to students, and flaunts his knowledge and experience. He fails to show any interest in the students knowledge received. He refers to Wikipedia to teach but refuses to accept Wikipedia for papers
This class is unbearable. Salwin is condescending and his pretentious attitude is annoying. He can't teach at all. He loves this subject matter and seems like he wants to help but all he does is waste time rambling and insulting you. He was 20 minutes late one day and called to make sure we didn't leave, then tried to keep us after. Don't take him
I was in his American music class. He is terrible. His tests make no sense. He rambles and talks about things that are unrelated to class. He is rude and is late constantly. He makes you feel like you're in high school again. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO.
He is an engaging speaker. His interest in the material is contagious. Makes things interesting. Careful, well planned presentation. Highly intelligent and knowledgeable in a lot of areas. Enjoyable prof.
Not sure why so many negative comments--he uses lots of big words and vocab, but is really an interesting guy, very interested in teaching. Enjoyed the class. A gifted pianist too.
Salwen is the worst kind of teacher. Pretentious, rude, and generally unhelpful. DO NOT take his class, you will regret it.
Passionate professor who cares about students, experienced, uses many examples, clear emails , likes history and talks about it in class, great intro to music!
worst teacher I've ever had. He showed up 10 minutes late for the mid-term and then sent an email complaining to us why we took extra time. I recommend never taking this class even if your life depended on it.
DO.NOT.TAKE.THIS.CLASS. Worst class I have ever taken at UNCW. He is a terrible teacher in every way. He will rush you during tests and is extremely rude. Class consists of him playing random songs and going to google, no preparation whatsoever. I recommend this class to no one. My dog could have taught this class better than him.
I really enjoyed Dr. Salwen's class! He is a little quirky and sometimes unorganized, but aren't we all? He was light hearted and made class fun to go to. He does use a lot of YouTube videos in class, but if you read the book it actually tells you to look up stuff on YouTube so it didn't bother me. It's not a hard class. Just take notes and read!
This teacher is the worst teacher on campus. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
HORRRIBLE! This is the hardest class I have ever taken. The professor lectures all class every class, and it's more history than it is music. Do not take this class with this professor!! I've heard it's fine with other teachers but not this one.
Worst professor at UNCW. The lectures are useless and barely teaches you things that will be on the test. Seemed like a history class more than music. he doesn't really use too big of words, but an underclassman might be overwhelmed by it. Does not provide the exam material until the night before via email. Avoid at all costs
I had Salwen for my uni class and he is the worst. He's constantly late, unorganized, doesn't know how to use technology, rambles about unrelated topics, rude, doesn't let us use laptops and keeps us after almost every single class. He was not very easy to deal with. If you can, avoid him at all costs.
Worst class and worst professor I've had at Uncw. Save yourself the frustration, anger, and stress by not taking his class. Absolutely horrible. Attendance isn't mandatory but I felt like he strongly resented anyone who skipped more than like two classes.
This professor is terrible. He literally insults anyone who asks a question or will call you out in front of the entire class for 'not paying attention' if God forbid you ask him to repeat something. His handwriting is also completely illegible on top of it which I almost think he does on purpose so he can be rude to anyone who asks what it says.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. He makes rude remarks to you and anyone else who decides to ask a question during class. Lectures are long and boring. His tests are impossible even though they're multiple choice. Music has always been my favorite subject, but I dreaded going to his class every time. Do NOT take this teacher for any reason
Tests are hard and make little sense. Don't expect help if you go to his office during office hours. If you ask a question, be ready for him to get upset. The notes he writes on the board are not readable. Often keeps you after class with his long lectures. The material is not that hard or unenjoyable, but he makes it harder than it needs to be.
A pretty average professor. Very passionate about music and tied that into my UNI class a lot. UNI in general is one of the most pointless classes ever, but it wasn't terrible. He rambles a lot and keeps you the entire time, so that sucks. If you do what minuscule homework there is you'll pass.
Fantastic professor, class was interesting, always willing to help.
Dr Salwen is not a good professor. A lot of the time it seems like he means well but a lot of what he says just comes off as rude and ignorant to a degree. He seems to know what he's talking about but he's not personable at all. All the assignments are bs. Don't take his class if you enjoy being happy or connecting with your teacher in class.
Worst professor I've ever had. He is rude & when you ask for help he makes you feel dumb for even attempting to ask a question. If you ask him to repeat something you get a speech on how you should have listened in the first place. His handing writing is completely unreadable & he is horrible at explaining the lesson. Don't take any of his classes.
He is incredibly condescending and does not talk about anything that actually helps you succeed in college.
Not a very engaging professor. Class material sadly wasn't very interesting either.
In class he is very hard to follow. Lectures are unclear, has trouble with using computer equipment, notes written on board are totally illegible. Requires outside concert attendance which is difficult if you have a job. Very unstructured.
Very difficult to follow, tests are worded terribly and don't make sense. Talks during tests, making it hard to concentrate. No clear instruction. Very unorganized. Can't manage technology for class. Requires concert attendance outside of class, which is difficult if you have to work. Two papers with basically no instruction. Doesn't reply to email
UNI is required for graduation and I didn't think the professor would matter since it seemed easy. He doesn't know how to work technology well and is very disrespectful when you have a question about the syllabus or assignment. He believes that he is right on any topic and even when someone has a respectful, opposing view. Pointless lectures.
Very condescending, contradicts himself constantly on his syllabus, and yet when you ask for clarification he has a nasty passive-aggressive attitude towards you, does not care about the students, very egotistical, assignments make no sense, and treats class like it's a major specific, even for those who are not music majors. Avoid this class.
Salwen is very condescending especially when you ask him a question. His class isn't too hard but his test questions never make much sense. Would not recommend taking this class at all.
Very condescending. Lacks clarity when asked questions. Wouldn't recommend this course. Boring long lectures that often exceed past the allotted class time. Test questions are confusing .
Salwen is interesting. Many people did not enjoy his class; I did. He is dry, but knows his stuff. Four tests - all easy IF you attend class and listen to his lectures. Everything you need to know will be written on board. Listening to the music helps for studying. Attend the concerts - easy 100. He will like you if you participate in discussion.
Terrible professor. His lectures suck and the notes he writes are illegible and placed randomly all over the board. He creates review power points that have a lot of good information on them but refuses to put them on blackboard for us to study. He pulls it up in class and goes over it for 10 seconds. He always goes overtime with his lectures.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Very condescending and egotistical. Has a nasty passive-aggressive attitude when students ask questions, even though he talks super fast and his handwriting is completely illegible. Lectures are frustratingly unorganized and difficult to follow. Tests are worded terribly and constantly talks during them.
He's okay. The lectures are also spoken with the occasional poorly written word or two on the board, no powerpoints. He's kind of condescending towards students and is not very receptive to questions. You have to really like the subject of music history or you probably shouldn't take this. I liked the subject so I enjoyed the class
Worst class taken hear at UNCW. Took in 2016 and felt disrespected the entire semester. He yells at other faculty when he was the one at fault. Does not help with syllabus questions. Taught music when we were in UNI and that was not helpful with college at all.
Dr. Salwen is terrible.. He takes an "100" level intro course and turns it into a course that you would need to take as a music major. He is INCREDIBLY dry, all over the place, skips through the material and then shuts you down if you are confused and ask a question. I feel like he has designed this course to make it as difficult as possible.
Only 4 grades this semester. 2 test, 1 paper, and the final exam. He's also very bad at writing promps for assignments.
Don't do it. Not a good idea. Hurricane happened didnt help at all with accommodations. Nit picks everything if its not specific enough. For an intro course he wants you to be extremely specific and know every little detail especially when writing the paper.
He is really knowledgeable but he is a real jerk when you ask him questions about hings he thinks are obvious. I would recommend staying away from his class.
Terrible at teaching what you need to know for the test and goes off on random tangents during class about things unrelated to what you are learning and when approached about it doesn't change and makes rude remarks to the student. Would not recommend anyone taking this class.
Dr. Salwen is not a fan favorite, but I did not mind him. He can be rude when asked questions and does not really answer them very well. He takes notes by hand on the board, attendance is the key to doing well on his tests. Participation is also a good way to get on his good side. Tests are not difficult as long as you review your notes.
His notes are super unorganized because he just writes random words and dates on the board in a huge clump. When you email him for help his response is quite rude like its a nuisance to answer your questions. You have to complete a term paper which I thought would be easy but his grading is harder than professors that have a doctorate in English.
He is a horrible teacher. I do not recommend taking this class. He is very rude and harsh. His handwriting on the broad is hard to understand and read. When you ask for help he responds rudely 99% of the time. He grades harsher than most of my English professors on the papers. Not a good class at all, DO NOT TAKE! A waste of time.
Professor Salwen has NO idea what he is doing. His notes are all over the place. He scribbles random words on the board that nobody understands. He has the worst attitude I have ever witnessed in a professor. I dont even think he really knows what he is doing. I feel as though Im losing the appreciation for music because of him.
Barry teaches an elective. I do not think he knows this. I am currently in accounting, microeconomics, statistics and some other business classes. Barrys class is the most involved. When i say do not take this class, i mean it. It pains me to sit through his lectures. Barry is rude, arrogant and his ego is bigger than his brain.
Dr. Salwen is the rudest Professor I have ever met. He is arrogant and condescending if you don't understand something and ask a question. He is late to everything and looks constantly unkempt like he sleeps in his clothes all week. Avoid at all costs!
Absolutely terrible. I dont even bother attending his lectures anymore bc of how painful they are to sit through. He scribbles random words and dates on the board that make no sense. Hes rude whenever you have a question. He also has a very bad attitude. Worst professor at UNCW. PLEASE AVOID
To put it bluntly, he's a bad teacher. If I could go back and stop myself from taking his class I would. His thought process is everywhere and talks down to you if you ask him to specify. Writes down random things for no reason and doesn't mention they are important until AFTER he erases them. I don't bother going to his lectures at this point.
This professor would rather condescend and argue with his students rather than teach him. He is bitter. Do not, I repeat, do not take this professor. This will mean you have to avoid the American music class because he is the only one who teaches it, but trust me do not take this class. I'm sure the reason he hasn't been fired is because of tenure.
This was one of the worst classes I've ever taken. A good 80% of this class wasn't even about music it was just a history lecture on slavery. During our final exam, he was late & hadn't even printed our tests yet. In the middle of our exam he asked about our winter break plans. His notes are horrible & barley legible. Concerts were a waste of time
Pros: attendance is not graded Cons: little inter-student engagement, unfocused curriculum, long and boring lectures, terrible handwriting, has no sense of humor, goes off on anecdotal tangents frequently.
He is rude and does not care at all. He is smart and if you ask a question he acts like you should already know the answer. He is horrible with technology. Do not take him if you do not have to.
Barry Salwen is one of the rudest professor I have encountered. Stay away from him. He is derogatory. He says he encourages questions, but if you do ask questions, you will receive the utmost disrespect. His tests are very hard, and he talks throughout the whole test. DO NOT take this class with Salwen!!
Do not take a class by him unless you have to! His lectures are more just rants that are unrelated to the curriculum and he has no idea how to use technology whatsoever. He's rude and talks down to students. Only good thing is that attendance isn't mandatory and all the quiz material is online.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Im a history major and write papers literally all the time and get As on my writing but he says I need to work on my writing. he is very rude and says he encourages questions but is not afraid to make you feel dumb for asking a question. I would not take him if you didnt have too. One of the worst professors i have ever had
DO NOT take this dude. He doesnt care about you or your grade. For the final term paper he makes you submit a bibliography before submitting the paper which I didnt see so I didnt submit it. He then replies to my late submission telling me I'm on my own and talking down on me as if I was an awful student. He's a jerk and doesnt know what hes doing.
This teacher is absolutely infuriating, his class is a disorganized mess. There is no powered point and he jots some notes on the board. This would be fine if it weren't for the fact the his hand writing is literally unreadable.
Get ready to read because this man wont teach you anything. He is clearly not prepared to teach an online class. His listening tests are completely unorganized and honestly, unnecessary. Teaching is changing with all of the online aspects, and Mr. Salwen is behind by a decade.
His online lectures could be disorganized, but it was clear he was passionate and knowledgeable about the material. You'll be rewarded for showing effort in his class. Not an easy A, but it was fun to learn about the history of American music. Also, he could be short/rude with students and impatient with "dumb questions."
Barry Salwen is a bad professor -Disrespects students with passive aggressive tones, most students dont respect him in return -No power point, writes on the board but you cant read it cause his handwriting is that bad -Almost everyone in the class was a musician, somehow couldnt get anyone engaged in class ***DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS***
Dr. Salwen is very passionate. He gives well-thought-out feedback if you put effort into your assignments. He really wants his students to be curious about what they are learning and to take it a step further by using outside sources for discussions. Only take this class if you are interested in American music; don't just take it as a credit.
I took his American Music class several years ago. I was just thinking today about the worst classes I ever took at UNCW and this one about tops the list. This dude is rude to student, condescending, and gives the most convoluted exams. Students dont respect him because hes a hard-ass who doesnt care for his students. Dont even think about it.
Dr. Salwen possesses a mastery of musical knowledge that he is able to convey with such clarity that, for someone who has never taken a music class in their life, it made this class a breeze. He genuinely cares and went out of his way to give me a chance to salvage my semester after I had a family tragedy amidst covid as well. Take his class.
Dr Salwen makes a class thats supposed to be fun not fun. He was rude about test taking, always criticizing people for asking him to repeat a song or ask for clarification. He took his job too seriously and was just nit-picky. Id recommend a different professor.
Dr. Salwen has to be one of the worst professors I have ever had at UNCW. Responds to emails, but is extremely rude in his responses. Good luck if you take his course!
Professor Salwen is very passionate about music but should not be teaching a university studies class and expect everyone to be passionate about music. Dr. Salwen never knew how to work the computer and often would get frustrated with the students when they asked a question or didn't know the answer. I would not take this class again
Professor Salwen is most definitely too pretentious and academic for most students. Very condescending, sticking to a mind-numbing lecture style, and purposefully trying to make his tests as hard as possible, he will truly have your mind screaming "let me out!" Don't walk, run from this class, trust me. I taught myself, that's how I succeeded.
Professor Salwen is an incredibly enjoyable and engaging lecturer. He treats everyone respectfully and he makes sure every student feels included. He's also amusing and laid back, and intersperses lectures with conversations, music pieces, and other variables. I'm really enjoying his American Music class and would love to take his future classes!!
most people dont come to this class and for good reason. it is true that he is bad with technology, holding up much of class time. except email, he's good at giving you snarky comments. i have never felt so humiliated for not knowing something before, and wanting to learn something new, you know the point of college.
He loves what he teaches so attending class helps you a lot in the course. I think he really cares about his students, but he isn't the best with technology which made the listening tests chaotic. The class had a lot of online quizzes, a test online and then an in-person listening test for every unit. It was a lot to keep up with.
Dude im writing this while my online test timer is ticking.
Actually the worst professor I've ever had. He rambles nonsense for an hour and in insanely passive aggressive if you dare ask him any question. Test are complete BS and usually feel like stuff we've not gone over. If you can take any other professor DO IT
Professor Salwen is v passionate about music, but he is an awful teacher. Class is boring, he doesn't post powerpoints (and if he does they don't help). Taking it now and I'm teaching myself everything. Honestly, this class makes me hate music. He's rude and the tests are bs. Don't take this class.
Literally had to withdraw from this course cause I was struggling so much at the work. I will admit that I sucked at the work, but Barry's condescending and rude attitude and how difficult and almost unpredictable the tests were didn't help. Also, so help me, the listening tests are horrible.
Literally the worst prof ever. Ruined music for me tbh. Rudest person ever, gives horrible feedback (not to mention confusing) Messy set up for assignments and tests. You won't pass if you don't go to class. He gives you attitude if you ask questions about what he's been studying for years. Rude responses to emails, just doesn't give a single f.
horrible ahh teacher, if like useless classes this is the one for you. Could jam the info you learn in this class in the trash. hilarously ahh course if you want an easy class to get your general requirements DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS you should be able to take this class from fully online.
While Dr. Salwen is passionate about music, his teaching style can be frustrating. Attendance is mandatory, but he struggles with technology, making tests and quizzes chaotic. unstuck AI helped me stay on track.
He cares about what he is teaching. He does tend to talk quite a bit, and if you do go to the class you will be staying the full amount of time. However, what he is talking about is interesting and if you actually listening to what he's saying, he's kind of funny. I have no idea why his reviews are so bad, just do the work and you'll pass.
American music 117 is not terribly difficult just annoying. Dr Salwen is bad with technology so the listening tests are a joke. He is also passive aggressive as mentioned in the other ratings. I personally find it funny but its not how a professor should conduct themselves. The term paper in this class is an absolute joke with ridiculous criteria
