This Teacher is a horrible teacher unless u are one of his favorite few( kissass) then u are going to get screwed over. his test are ok but for the final grade he will ruin ur grade. He is boring and likes to talk too much. BAD TEACHER!!!

His funny & quite clear. You could find him difficult. Better to start off bad and make your way up. Got 64 in 1st exam, 100 and 99 in the next ones. Still got an A! Exams are quite easy.

Knows what he is doing, but goes through stuff very quick. Tests are not hard, but not too easy. Explains suff very good, but is often in a hurry to proceed with new material. We did limits and derivatives in just one class!

He talks about how great he is and he many problems he solved. he is a great teacher for TI-89, but not a good teacher to explain problems. he curves the exams. 5 exams. his exam gradiing policy is weird. his problems is hard.

Isn't too bad. Has the best intentions on trying to get you to pass class & final. Falls off topic a lot and teaches very fast. Finished course w/ a month to spare! Tests seem to be hard considering the practice final is rather ez. Try to find a better teacher but if you can't don't worry too much.

Miserable experience with this professor. I came in with a great attitude, but got so turned off because of this professor's know-it-all attitude. Completely belittles and talks over students in class. You can't get a word in with this man. Run far, far away.

It seems to be hit or miss with him. His tests are very hard, but he's a pretty generous grader. The material covered is not easy. He really likes the calculator and uses it a lot. Sitting there for an hour and 40 minutes is not fun. Sometimes boring. If you can keep up, you'll get a good grade.

He's a nice guy. Seems hard at first but he's actually trying to get you to learn. If math isn't your subject you shouldn't take math at all, it doesn't matter what teacher you get. He's a fair grader so practice the problems at home and you're gonna do good plus you gonna feel much smarter.

He's a pretty good teacher. Our class did pretty well on the tests and he curved the first 3, but not the final. You must look at the textbook or you will be lost. This class covers a lot of material in preparation for 3020. He made the class interesting. Not for people who like to slack off.

A pretty good teacher. Gives comprehensive reviews for the tests and curves them slightly. The material at this level is certainly not easy, but if you put time in to review the material on your own, you should do fine. He allows calculators, when other teachers for this class do not. Very helpful.

I took AP Calculas in HS (not the test) in my senior year and his class as a lower freshman, and we learned almost the same thing. I, who always liked math, was completely, lost, I could never keep up in his classes. Even after reading the book, and staying awake in his lectures, I would've failed without his generous curves. Tests are super hard.

Bottom line is that people dread calculus, but if you take all the different resources you can do well with this guy. This is one of those classes you have to ask quesetions and be active because if you fall behind you stay behind. Work hard and this guy will get you through. Calc isnt something you want to take but if you have to, take this guy.

Did my homework, studied hard for the first test, and failed it. I didn't want to take another chance with him so I dropped the class. Math is one of my strongest subject, but I just couldn't keep up with this professor. I've seen the class averages, and none of them were over 75. Don't take him.

This professor is very good. Calculus III is very hard, but he made everything understandable. The tests are hard, but he will usually curve the grades up by 5 points. He's very professional and wants to see the class do well. The only thing is you should look over the topics on your own because theres too much to cover in class.

Really enthusiastic and pretty good sense of humor. Managed to keep calculus relatively interesting. He gives bonus points and if you do the work, he rewards you. The only negative is he goes REALLY fast which isn't great for calculus. But he finished early and spent about 2 1/2 weeks reviewing for the final. Good professor.

One has to understand that Calculus is a difficult sucject if you are not inclined to math. The thing about Shaw is that he is fast and he has a habit of making you feel dumb. Also he does not sugar coat anything so he tells it straight.But, he is human so he will have little mercy for you . I succeed in passing, you need to study PLEASE STUDY :)

Rushes through the material like crazy...only plus is that his tests are rediculously easy which almost makes up for it. If you want to go on in math don't take him though, cause u won't leave the class feeling u had learned anything substantial...

hes very enthusiastic about math which makes the class interesting and fun at the same time. he does go fast and some concepts just seem confusing, but get a study partner and STUDY! u cant just breeze through class with this guy. Overall, i think hes a great professor.

i took this professor during the summer session and i advise you do the same. he gives you your moneys worth but make sure you take good notes and look at the material. he gives you rewards you if you keep doing better on each tests. very funny and interesting. take him. you'll get at least an a- or a b.

Excellent Math Professor!! Very Energetic, Enthusiastic about his work. I took him during summer seccion and I thought it be really hard but with this professor you cant go wrong. He is Great. He really makes sure that your MONEY IS WORTH. If you do take him make sure that you do all your HW's and also take good class notes. It definitely Helps.

I took him in the Summer of 2005. I would say it is best to take him in the summer, the final exam we were able to use the calculator for every problem, so you know just about everyone cheated on the final exam. He always rushed out of the class once it was over, he was more anxious to leave than us! Never let us out early, in the end, I got a B-.

He teaches as though everyone is a math wiz. For those who are not ur grades will suffer like ur math skills. He is very funny and also very mean. In the beginning he will discourage u as much as he can and by the end he will be more encouraging about getting u through the final exam, if u make it that far.

Prof. Shaw knows a lot about math, but it is very hard for him to express the ideas to students. I had a hard time to learn new things in his class, but you can go to the tutoring center after. He will be nice to you if you respect him. He will spend 2/3 of the semester for teaching, and 1/3 of the time to review for the final exam.Good at math?tak

His class is really good! I actually learn a lot. My only problems with him are that he eats in class and chews like a cow and that he gets lost in his problems on the board sometimes and you can't even stop him to ask a question. He curves on tests and answers all your questions! Be sure to take him if you want to learn a lot about math!

He speaks fast. Unlike other profs, he covers the whole syllabus with 3/4 of semester time. Gives a lot of extra info. Very overwhelming at first, but you get used to it. If you pass this class, you can prove to yourself that you are a decent student. Everyone in his class gets around 95%. Also, he likes to joke.

I dropped the class after a week- changed my minor from math to psychology because this professor literally discouraged my "passion" for math. Horrible, horrible, I regret taking him. From what I remember, did not finish the first lesson while he already started talking about the last lesson. Recommended 0%.

Takes no attendance. Teaches in 1 class what should be taught in 2 sessions. But he goes over everything during the review sessions. His tests are similar to the textbook problems. Easy if you are a student that excels at math. But could be a nightmare if you are bad in math. I suggest take his class only if you can maintain a B in math.

Professor Shaw is good teacher. He give 4 quizes. The questions are same as the review. And the Final are so easy. Just study a little, u will get A. People who rate bad are not interested in Math. Shame -_-|||

I normally don't write reviews, but this prof. really needs one. He doesn't care about the subject, eats in the middle of the class. In general very disorganized and it feels like you are back in H.S. His grading is strange and doesn't really follow your grades (this can go in your direction or against you) depending on his mood.

Our class was unanimous in feeling that Prof. Shaw was unqualified to teach. Mostly, he is unable to explain anything. He will simply refuse to answer a question. I found him insulting & discriminatory. Never went over a single homework problem, ever. Unqualified to teach and has been at Baruch for 33 years. Very unsettling. Might be Padding.

i don't know what people are talking about, i think he is a very good professor. Eventhough he does go a bit too fast through the lessons, he explains everything well. By doing the HW,you will get 90+ on the test. Classes average was over 80 because everyone did well on the test from doing HW. Gives bonus points (7or 8 on each test)NOT BAD AT ALL

Prof. Shaw makes a generally difficult class much simpler. 3 tests and final, you don't necessarily have to get the right answers, just set up the problem with the correct methods and show him you know whats going on. Nice curves, class average in mid 80s. Do lots of hw problems, it helps you understand better than what he writes on the board.

Great prof, innovative (allows the use TI-89, Maple) Do hwks - otherwise not easy to follow. Covers alot, so if you want to learn some LinAlg and VectorCalc while taking Multivar.Calc - take him. He's an old-school physicist, his approach is fundamental, so Russian and Chinese guys/gals will like his style. Gives curves, wants you to do good.

HE IS HARD BUT HE TRIES TO HELP OUT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE...PUT IT LIKE THIS ON THE 1ST EXAM ABOUT 60% OF THE CLASS FAILED INCLUDING ME I GOT A 46 AND MANAGED A 'B' FOR THE CLASS...TAKE HIM DURING THE SUMMER HE IS BY FAR THE BEST TEACHER FOR CALCULUS IN THE SUMMER

he seems pretty hard at the beginning but he is very helpful and explains everything until everyone understands it. He is just very unorganized thats y its hard to follow him but otherwise take him. I failed my first two exam and got an A on the final he gave me a C.

You can see that he's very excited about the subject. He lives and breathes Math/Physics/Computers but could be unclear some times. Just study the book in addition to doing what he says and you should do well. He's a very nice guy BTW.

The average of the class is above 95 and even 100s. Obviously I got an A. The reviews are helpful, didn't use the book much. Just get attention in class and you will be fine. BTW, the classnotes are a little bit unorganized, and some topics ends in the middle of nowhere.

He might be a decent professor to teach calculus, but NEVER in programming. Hard to understand, teach C# and datebase without teaching the basics. If you have no knowledge of programming or what so ever before, stay away from him for this class,cuz you will end up more question marks than entering the class before.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE C# PROGRAMMING BEFORE DO NOT TAKE HIM. HE CANNOT TEACH IT AT ALL AND WILL LEAVE YOU OUT TO DRY. 10 OUT OF 22 PEOPLE ALREADY DROPPED THE CLASS ONE MONTH IN INCLUDING ME. prof. cant teach programming at all.. goes superfast like we already did it. doesnt explain concepts. ppl ask for help and he was never there at office hours. cursed at students in the class after we made complaints. i dropped the class.. if u care abt ur GPA, DO NOT TAKE HIM. u will end up with a low grade or W (like more than half the class did)

3 or 4 exams during the semester, depends on how the class did in the first three exams(2/3 of the grade).1 final(1/3 of the grade).The exams during the semester are pretty easy, he gives very helpful review prior the exams. The final is not difficult if you studied what he told you to study. Also, he gives curves and treats his students well.

The way Prof. Shaw teaches programming is really different from other professors.We are really creating programs and he shows us amazing programs.If you are familiar with programming, you are going to love the class.If you are a beginner,he will take his time.the way he grades is not clear but if you creates the programs he asked for,you'll get A.

Prof. Shaw is a good guy, but he really can't teach. He goes extremely fast and no one understands anything. He switches from topic to topic, because his goal is to finish the book. Be prepared to do a lot of outside learning. Youtube MIT notes were helpful.

He gives three exams and one final. He does not give any homeworks but it's better to study before the class to understand what he is saying. He does not give a good lecture but he definitely gives you an A if you follow what he says. He is an easy grader and his lecture is funny and interesting.

I was scared to take him after I read all these comments, but I had no choice. In the beginning I was freaking out and was about to drop the class, because I couldnt understand what he was talking about. Yeah, he's funny, but he doesn't teach at all. But HE IS A VERY EASY GRADER! Just show the interest or at least an effort and you'll get an A!!!

The worst teacher ever!!! He scared you the first day of class by telling you how many people failed this class. Well, I was one unfortunately. I didn't learn anything from him but from my tutor. He doesn't teach you anything; he jumps from one thing to another;disrespectful towards the people that are not good at math. He is a torture!!

Really good teacher and really cares about students. He wants you to pass and will threaten you with F grades and othr things but only does it to help you pass!! I took him in the summer and he gave 3 tests (pretty easy) and goes over dept. final PROBLEM BY PROBLEM-bottom line, if not for him theres no way I would have passed calculus! recommended!

He will know perfectly what's going on, but unfortunately you wont. But then again, he's a very easy grader. Even if you put up **** proofs and work, he'll give u a lot of partial credit. Just study and you'll get an A.

Lectures are mostly useless and off topic. You better off teaching yourself from the textbook and the Internet. The professor is very rude to students, although he is a fair grader. Overall the teacher created a very unpleasant and frustrating learning environment.

I did well in this class because I took a calculus class in high school. If this is your first calculus class, you might find it difficult. He gets off-topic easily. This is a good class if you already know a little bit of programming. He tends to go at a fast pace and jumps to different topics. However, he is very encouraging and cares about his students.

He's very nice, but any of u registering for his c++ class should be prepared to do self study. It's hard to understand the programs without explanations. Read the textbook. Also, even though he doesn't collect or check the homework, u should still do it. Just memorizing his programs isn't as effective as actually getting practice.

useless professor and very rude talking too much if u take him u gonna west your time and your money . doesn't teach any thing just talking a lot about him self!! he just write down couples topic and you have to figure out what topics he talking about. I recommend for him to do anything else except teaching math

Out of all the professors i have taken in Baruch, Dr. Shaw is unique in passion for learning and understanding the subjects he teaches. It is this interest that makes his class worth taking. As for grading if you put effort into the class you will get an A.

His calculus 1 class was pretty simple if you have prior experience in calculus. His notes are illegible and he jumps everywhere when trying to explain certain concepts. He spends too much time trying to derive concepts when he could explain everything in a simpler way. His tests may seem hard at first, but he's an easy grader.

Avoid taking him. very unclear and illegible. teaches things you will won't have to know. "This won't be on the final; but I'm going to teach it anyways" is one of his most used lines

not as bad as others say... if you are good at math, it doesnt matter... the textbook will help you. I have no idea before the exam, but I just study overnight with the textbook, I still get 100s. If you are kind of students expecting the professor explain everything, this might not be the best class for you.

I have to agree with almost everyone here. You either need prior calculus knowledge or you have to be very dedicated to get a good grade in this class. I took calculus before, barely pay attention in class, and never do any homework. (I didn't even buy the textbook.) I still got an A. His explanations are not clear at all. Take him at your own risk

Wastes all of class teaching complicated proofs of things not related to the subject matter. Briefly mentions material between off topic rants and doesn't show examples. I can't imagine passing this class unless you've had calc before or you have someone else teach you. My calc credit didn't transfer but I got an A, I have a C now. Tests are hard.

If you took calculus before, you'll do good in his class. His exams are really easy if you have prior knowledge. Otherwise, you'd be lost as he mindlessly wastes time on deriving concepts/proofs that won't show up on the exams.

GOT AN A!!! He is an EASY grader. He gave me full credits for problems I attempted to do but didn't get a correct final answer.. Some people got like 107 because he is super generous with extra pts. Calc is not easy so be prepared to read the textbook , search on youtube , do homework problems (he doesn't care if you do hw or not)!

I admit he isn't always clear and he is cocky, but he does a pretty good job of teaching the material. He is correct when he says that u have to do your part in order to pass the final exam. That means going to tutoring studying day and night, the department final isn't easy, but if you study it shouldn't be a final. I got an A with hard work.

Professor Shaw is very intelligent and may seem cocky to many people who are sensitive. To me he is hilarious. Math 2003 is a very hard subject to understand. All you have to do is show up and do EXACTLY what he tells you and you will get atleast a B or better. Cant go wrong with this professor.

not very clear and always makes mistakes. the class is boring and the examples he provided were easy but on the test it is whole different story. do not take his class if you have no prior knowledge of calculus because you will die. need to self study a lot and he never checks the hw and only took attendace in the beginning and never again.

If you have prior knowledge in calculus (taken ap classes in high school) the class isn't that bad, the exam questions are not too hard if you know the basics of calc, however he does not do a very good job of teaching it. I took an AP calc class in high school but did poorly on the final but got As or B+s on the quizes and got an A-

I can appreciate how hard teaching a novice is as a former tutor, although I still think the material should seem far simpler than he makes it seem. He's okay though. I've had far, far worse. He's not a reason to avoid MTH 3300. What he doesn't tell you is that you should practice writing code by hand because that's what you'll be doing on exams.

Worst professor ever.... don't take him unless you know Calc like the back of your hand and would like to sleep in class. Approx. 4 tests (none which he taught any material) and 1 final. No hw, no class points, only test grades

Prof Shaw shows a lot of advanced things in class but his tests are extremely simple and have nothing to do with any of it. They are for your own benefit. For your grade, look through the topics he tells you to in the book and on youtube before the exams and you'll get an easy A.

He is a super boring professor. I got into MTH2600 and he assumed only scholars or Macaulay Honors students could get there. He continually talked about how he's teaching scholars and his expectations for Macaulay students. I'm not a Macaulay students, but that really annoys me. His lecture is boring but he's easy

He expects you to know how to program before you come into his class. He will not teach you anything, he is very disorganized, you will have to learn the entire course on your own. Also, he requires a textbook that he does not use or follow.

Prof. Shaw expected most students to learn programming on their own. There was no clear grading structure and students had to do their own guesswork. Lectures were disorganized barely touched on what would be on the exams. The only benefit is he's an extremely generous grader for most students and prefers to give B+'s and A's.

Don't buy the textbook. Pay attention to his lectures to learn a general concept of what it is he's trying to do. Find a Youtube channel or website that will teach the breadth of that concept. He's not an expert programmer and his lessons are convoluted and confusing. His tests are handwritten, but he is very forgiving of grammar errors.

Hes a funny, goofy goober looking guy. Hes really relaxed and teaches with low intensity. I would recommend talking him. Hes smart and funny, math is a hard subject regardless of professor. Might as well take someone your going to enjoy failing with.

The course is definitely easier for people who's taken calculus oncetwice already, and Professor Shaw always warns about the difficult parts just to get students on their toes. He's always giving feedback and insights and is very supportive. 4 regular tests that amounts to 23 of your final grade and a final that does the rest. He notices hardwork

3 exams and one final. The first 2 exams were ok. After the 2nd exam, he taught very hard stuff that is not covered in the book. You get troubles if you miss his class. I did not do HW but HW helps u. He never posts HW, either he has a syllabus. Good thing is he's a funny person.I spent a lot of time watching Youtube and finally got an A.

Look it's a difficult class. He does the best job with it that anyone would do and tries to make the class as interesting as possible. If you're going to take the class I would say take it with Professor Shaw.

Do not take this class unless you've already been taught calculus. Professor Shaw is a really nice guy and probably knows more about the subject than anyone you'll ever meet, but his teaching style is confusing at best. If you somehow end up with him because of a learning community, just use Khan Academy and PatrickJMT, you'll learn more.

What this class teaches you is that you don't need him because you have YouTube. His exams are simple. All you have to do is memorize code and draw graphs. He emphasizes Quantum Computing earlier in the semester and gives projects he forgets about. He hides behind the idea that complicated math will stay complicated so he won't have to explain it.

Professor Shaw is nice, funny, and patient. He gave four tests that are 7-9 problems each and his own final (20 questions). Keep in mind that he takes your train of thought into account when he grades the tests (gives partial credit). If you don't understand something, speak up in class. He genuinely wants to help you out. It helps to practice.

You'll probably never meet someone else who knows their calculus as well as Professor Shaw does. However, with that said, he isn't the best at relaying the information necessary to understand the course. Nonetheless, he is always ready and willing to help if you ask for it. Also, as a side note, don't buy WebAssign, he doesn't grade anything.

Great professor. Expect to work your but off. kind of parallel studying of c++ and c#. Ask a lot question during the review, he answers all of them. Sometimes he assigns cool projects , if you make it first he gives generous credits. I would take him again if i had too. Gives a lot of hints. Funny, definitely will learn cool things.

Three class exams and final. Do HWs and mini projects to get extra credit. It makes a lot of difference if you mess up one exam. Generous grader. You will learn C++ and C# in one course which is pretty fascinating. This class pays off. Take him!

Would take again

C++ isn't easy. But Professor Shaw recognizes students' effort (actively following along in class instead of browsing the internet for fun, not texting, submitting homework in time, asking questions when struggling). Also has a fun extra credit for coding a game.

Wouldn't take again

This guy didn't teach us much at all! He regularly gave us incorrect proofs, but expected us to be perfect calculators. Often times he would go on long tangents and use all the class time without teaching us the required material. If you have no background in calculus already, do not take this class as it will be too fast for you. His tests are ok.
