Hard test but great lectures, TAKE HIM! but don't read the book

Solomon is a great teacher and you can learn a lot from him.

Mr. Solomon is a very good teacher. Going into my Senior year, I have yet to attend a class that was so well prepared. Negative comments likely come from students who did not do well because the did not do what was asked of them.

I think that he was a great teacher. If you came to class and took notes, you got an A. I think most of the negative comments are stupid personal shots. If you do what he tells you to do, you will get an A. The class was very fun and easy!

I absolutely loved this class and thought he was a great teacher. His lectures are interesting and he clarifies things until you get them. I agree that these are a lot of these are personal shots, do what he tells you to and you'll get an A

Professor Solomon is AMAZING! Take this class even if you don't need it! I had it 1 time a week for 3 hours which seems like forever, but I was never bored!

Great teacher. If you dont like him you probably just did bad in the class. He is a very funny teacher. And the class is easy as long as you go to class everyday.

A good teacher and good course to take, he speaks very well and is very clear. Just make sure to study the book well. Just like with the many other subjects I have taken, the teacher takes the questions right out of the book!!!

He is an amazing professor..very funny and a good teacher. Makes the class fun and interesting. Tests are hard and you must study the notes and keep up with the reading in the book to do well.

He is an awesome teacher. You will never be bored in class with all the commercials he shows. Also, he is very witty and entertaining. The tests are easy as long as you read the book and take notes in class.

Having just finished taking the first test, I can say that if you read over the notes in the book you buy from the bookstore, you should average a C. If you read the book, great. The tests aren't difficult (so far), and he is definitely entertaining. By far the funniest professor I've had ever.

This guy was great. If you couldn't get a B in his class, then clearly college isn't for you. Great all around guy in my opinion and he teaches nearly exactly whats on the test.

I would definitly recommend this class! Very interesting and I actually looked forward to going to class. Soloman is funny and his class is really entertaining. Definitly take this class!

This teacher is great! He does pay special attention to students, but just the ones that participate and sit in the front. But who cares, he is super interesting and curves the tests like crazy. I LOVED his class!

One of the best professor's I've ever had. I almost changed my major to advertising after I took his class. Lectures are interesting, exams aren't that bad if you study. Definitely go to class if you want to get an A. His lecture notes are really helpful too. I would take this class all over again if I had the chance.

Really nice, entertaining professor. Lots of fun, always showing commercials in class. Willing to help you out if you don't understand something. Make sure to attend class and you'll do well on the exams. Has a huge curve (like 15 pts.) to make the tets much easier.

Barry Solomon was a really good teacher- he showed a lot of ads during class that helped to understand the material. Usually, the lectures were entertaining and not boring like other classes. His tests were difficult, but if you take notes and read the chapters in the book, you will do fine! I def recommend him if you want to take advertising!

I loved this class! Yeah there is a lot of information to learn and that you need to know for the test, but its worth it. He is an awesome teacher and really gets involved with his lectures. Hes hilarious and makes it fun!

AWESOME!!! He is so funny, he picks on students a lot, especially if you walk in late. He shows tons of commercials to relate to the material. Tests are a bit difficult but if you study and read the text you'll do fine. He makes his own note taking book which is amazing, and he follows it. You cant miss more then 3 classes- takes attendence.

His lectures were very entertaining, but often drawn out becuase he goes over terms that are common sense that I could've understood without going to class, and attendance is mandatory. The tests were pretty hard, because the material seemed to be taken more from the textbook than the notes, when he said it would be evenly split between the two. He does flirt, but I doubt it affects anyones grade.

Very interesting class. Soloman is a good teacher when he is not flirting with the girls up front and going off into tangents. He randomly takes attendance and he gives extra points for not missing a class. His tests are really hard but he curves them. The textbook is a must because alot of the test material comes from the test.

Funny. The tests were alright, you really have to study because there is so much info. although a lot of the material is very repetitive. Fun class.

He kept the class very interested due to his enthusiasm. I studied a lot for the tests since there was a lot of material to be learned. If you go to class and study you can get an A/ B

Great teacher! The workbook is verbatim what he says in the lectures. The extra points for full attendance helps as well as a bit of studying. 4 tests are only grades and they're not too bad after some studying. Funny guy and makes it interesting with lots of examples.

Simply put, one of the best teachers i've ever had. Class was more like a standup routine than a lecture. He combines the notes into a workbook so there is less writing and more listening.

Your grade is based on 3 tests and extra credit if you go to every class. The tests can be easy if you memorize everything which isn't too hard.

go to class, its extra credit. it class was the most entertaining class i have ever had. he knows waht he is talking about and is passionate which is waht you need in a professor. you must work hard though.

Great teacher, very passionate in what he does. REally wants to make diffrence. Only 3 test come to class. Attendence is required and you do get extra credit at the end for going to every class. Very entertaining, I definately recommend this class.

He's a very good professor, but his tests are very difficult. You really have to know the material. Do what it takes to do well b/c the tests are your only grades. And go to class: he gives extra credit for going to all classes but after you miss 3, he takes off a big chunk of your grade for each class you miss. But a very good teacher overall.

Go to class, pay attention, and you will get an A. The only grades come from 3 tests, but he always has a huge curve. Class is enjoyable too - he makes jokes and gives lots of examples.

The negative comments about Solomon are a joke. This class was one of my fav at FSU. W/ moderate studying, you can easily get a B. I got an A. He is a funny guy and does care about the students in class. Very interesting class. Take him.

the class is fun and interesting, but the test are complicated...study and take notes in class..understand the concepts not just memorization!!

I really can't understand why everyone is ragging on this man. I promise, if you go to class and take notes, there is no way you can't at LEAST get a B. He gives tons of extra credit AND the test questions come straight from the outlines in the book. Plus, he really does try to keep the class awake and entertained with music and jokes.

Solomon is awesome! Anything said negatively about this prof is ridiculous! You go to class, take notes, and get to watch tons of commercials as examples of the material. He knows what he's teaching, is passionate, and really engages his students. My all time favorite class, and teacher. 3 Tests- if you understand the material, you'll be just fine.

He's really is a fun teacher, makes things very entertaining. He does go off on tangents, which gets a little annoying when you just want to get through the material and leave. Overall a good teacher who knows what he's teaching. You have to def. study for tests (I recommend making a study guide from the objectives on the syllabus).

Attendance is super important in this class. He came off as a jerk at first, but he gets better by the end of semester. He shows a lot of commercials which really help with the topics you learn.

he is a decent teacher and very entertaning. We watched lots of commercials and talked about them. The book is important if you dont like writing alot. I didnt study hard, but didnt miss a class b/c he added 3% to final grade if u are not absent. I got a B, so not difficult at all. He also curves the tests! you'll enjoy going every class

Solomon is funny and nice. He does pick favorites sometimes but not all the time. His lectures are entertaining and I learned a great deal in his class. I liked his teaching style and I thought that the tests were fair. Overall he's an excellent teacher and I would recommend him to everyone!

I cannot fathom why people would say anything bad about this ADV3008 with Solomon. You watch funny commercials and take notes. There are no trick questions on tests they are straight forward. He genuinely wants everyone to do well. Why are people so angry that you absolutely have to go to class? Its important. Great class, NOT boring!

Very interesting class, but his humor is very rude. His tests are hard so study!! And please don't be late to the final exam, he gives you 15 min.to come to class before you're considered absent.A girl walked in exactly 16 min after class startes and she automatically failed the class because he wouldn't let her take the final.Very strict!!

Solomon is getting a bad rep on her for no reason. You watch funny commercials and class is interesting! His attendance is strict but it helps you do well in the class. His exams require you to study but thats college...this is not an easy A class but if you put in some effort you will have no problems!! Take this class!

Solomon was a GREAT teacher!!! The class is very interesting and he shows a ton of ads in class to help you better understand concepts. The tests are VERY easy and he gave out plently of extra credit! There is no text book just a note taking guide which is great! Def one of my favorite classes at FSU!!!

really great professor. knows what he is talking about, very insightful. yeah attendance is required but you will want to go to class. he is fun and gets the material across clearly. it is worth taking him

The truth is ALL of what everyone says is correct.He does make the class interesting and shows alot of commercials to keep you entertained...BUT his personality isnt exactly lovable, he does APPEAR to play favorites,and his humor is offensive.If you go to class (mandatory),and takes notes,its a pretty EASY B for anyone

Loved this class. Solomon is an excellent teacher and made me really want to get into the advertising field. No book, just a note packet. Attendance is mandatory but I didn't want to miss class anyways. Tests come directly from the note packet, just read over it and know the material for tests. Lots of ads, funny guy. Do it.

I had solomon 6 years ago (yikes) and was a TA for him twice. I still keep in touch with him. He instills his passion of advertising into all of his students. Truth is, if you have anything negative to say about him - you are likely a poor student with horrible work ethic, solely taking the class to look at beautiful girls. Shame on you! :)

AWESOME TEACHER! Best class I've ever taken at FSU. His lectures keep you interested making you actually want to go to class regardless of the mandatory attendance. Tests are super fair, just study the notebook you purchase and you should get an A. If you get anything below a B you're just a horrible student.

If you need to take an ADV class or an elective or can take this class at all do it! He is very funny and explains the concepts well. Attendance is mandatory but you need to go because his tests are based on the lectures which follow along with the notebook required for the class. Take ADV3008 with Barry Solomon.

No textbook, just a notebook, which is extremely vague. Tests are challenging, but if you study the notebook, you should be able to get a B. Take Solomon.

Solomon is a cool dude. Very passionate about his area of teaching, and he uses some terrific ads to illustrate the point he's trying to make in class.

His class is not hard at all. Great teacher, who uses clips of adds to help keep the class interesting. He is more than qualified to teach ad because he has the work experience to back it up. Just really study definitions and make sure you understand concepts and you'll be fine on the test. He gives out quite a bit of extra credit as well.

Class may not be mandatory but it'll boost your grade. He is a bit full of himself but his lectures are pretty good just kind of boring after watching so many ads. Tests were clear but you still second guess so study more than you think and love those notes like they're your best friend, because they are.

Amazing professor best teacher I've had at FSU. He's seriously wonderful and keeps you interested, even at 9:30 in the morning. Wonderful wonderful wonderful. Learned so much and he uses a workbook just take notes and you're golden.

Interesting and hilarious professor! Lots of ads in class obviously, which are fun. His humor is a little off the cuff sometimes, but it makes it interesting. One thing: tests are directly from the notebook, but if you are short on cash, don't buy the notebook! You can take notes directly from the slides, it's the same material I promise.

He is an outstanding teacher. He gave me a new sense of passion for Advertising and is extremely engaging and acutally cares if you pass or not. Look forward to this class every day. Very entertaing and informational. TAKE HIM OR DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS AT ALL!

Mr. Solomon doesn't take BS from anybody, so don't expect him to listen (or care) when you have an excuse for missing an exam or being late. That said, Mr. Solomon is a GREAT teacher and you can learn a lot from him. He'll make you think about the material and does a good job of keeping the class entertaining.

He does a great job lecturing, gives an occasional extra credit, and is clear about everything. When I went for extra help he could have been a bit more personable but nothing unexpected. Good class, he makes it very interesting.

Got a 99% on the first text and a 94% on the second just by memorizing the notes. Very easy and clear content. Most is common sense. I would highly recommend this class and would take it again. You need a 90% for an A in the class and he gives you 3 percentage points for perfect attendance.

I was surprised that I didn't do so hot on the tests in this class but overall very inspiring teacher and honest insight into advertising

Solomon was a great teacher. Be sure to go to class and take notes in his book. Make sure you get a grasp on the material as well because you need to fully understand the concepts for the test and be able to apply them.

No outside reading!! Just need to buy his outline. More than fair grading system, offers a good amount of extra credit (I unfortunately missed out on an "A-" because of my absences) and lectures with a lot of examples that engage the class. He is very straightforward in teaching and in what he expects. Grades are based on 3 exams and attendance.

Awesome teacher. Very funny and makes classes interesting to go to (which is good because attendence in important). You can miss up to 3 but then you get your grade deducted each time. miss no classes and u get 3 points extra credit (have 89% then he bumps you to 92%). Offers extra credit. 3 tests overall equal your final grade. DEFINTELY RECOMMEND

Took him online- heard he was great both in class too though. Must watch his lectures and take specific notes on them to get an A. 3 tests and 1 project. Loves using examples for test questions- so write them down next to definitions. Class & Lectures are very interesting and apply to modern markets! Would take again! Didn't need text book.

I had a great experience in his class- it made me decide to apply for the Ad major. I didn't know Solomon on a personal level, just went to class and sat in lecture but I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something not too difficult but still wanting to learn. It's one of the most interesting lecture classes I've had! (Also, the book is helpful)

Take this course if you're looking for an elective or you just need it. I highly recommend. The text isn't necessary, but it makes the course a WHOLE lot easier and clearer. If you don't, you better typewrite super fast. Go to class. There are only 3 exams, so pay attention. A delightful 1:15 to sit through. Not at all boring most days. Good luck.

Mr. Solomon is a wonderful professor. He is very knowledgable and it is clear he enjoys teaching which makes class not only bearable but also fun. Attendance is, for the most part, mandatory. If you attend every lecture you are rewarded a 3% bonus to your final grade. So go to class!

Amazing professor. The tests (only 3 of them) cover a lot of material but the content is very intuitive. He shows ads during the lectures to give you real life examples. He's an amazing speaker and teacher. Calls students out to demonstrate. HIGHLY recommend him for a first advertising class. Best professor I've ever had at FSU or ever. AMAZING.

I really enjoyed Mr. Solomon's class. His lectures were great and if you attend every single class he adds 3 percentage points to your final grade which helped raise my C to a B. You really have to study though, as the tests focus more on application of information than definitions. Mr. Solomon is one of the best teachers I have had at FSU!

cool class, not difficult, but don't expect to just breeze through it. You have to REALLY familiarize yourself with the text. show up & pay attention in class (c'mon, all you're doing is watchinganalyzing commercials dude. don't be lazy). only 3 tests, no homework, and 3 points towards your grade for perfect attendance. he's funny too. real chill

I enjoyed this class. I do not appreciate when attendance is mandatory but this is a lecture i did not mind attending regardless. We often watched videos and it was not boring. The book is straightforward and not too long. Lectures are the book and the book is the lecture. He throws in extras. Tests were easy enough.

Entertaining and interesting class. No outside work. Shows ads to help explain - chooses ones that really illustrate his point. Humor can sometimes come across the wrong way, so don't take his comments to heart. Good guy. Great life story- would make a good mentor. He's an excellent instructor. He has copious experience in the industry, and that is evident in his lectures. If you attend every class you get a 3% bump to your final grade, but if you skip more than 2 classes you start losing points. He wrote the assigned textbook, which costs $50, but you could probably survive w/out it

Great teacher, but was a bit of a hard class for me. If you attend every class you get 3 points added on to your final grade. He also curves tests! I thoroughly enjoyed this class, it was super interesting and I learned a lot.

The entire class is 3 tests, which is a blessing for some and a curse for others. His textbook is a collection of notes, which he encourages you to add your own notes to. The tests arent impossible, but you cant go in without studying. He takes points off if you miss more than 2 classes, but adds extra credit if you never skip. Amazing prof overall

Great professor, you're going to want to show every day because he gives you 3 grade if you show up everyday which can change a letter grade.

Easy. You do have to study for the tests to get an A but it's not hard. Just read/memorize the notes in the book. There are only 3 tests, they're all multiple choice, and none of them are cumulative. The most important thing is you have to show up every day for attendance, because after 2 unexcused absences, points are deducted from your grade.

This was the greatest class I've taken at FSU. You have to be present in class both physically and mentally. His lectures are very insightful and interesting and you have the opportunity to learn a lot if you pay attention. Tests are based on the materials he reviews in class, so go and take good notes, including the examples he provides!

Professor Solomon is a really smart guy, passionate about what he teaches. He's really funny & knows that he's talking about. I never had any problems with him, but I can understand why some people wouldn't have liked his use of sarcasm. Grades are comprised of 3 exams which are all fairly easy if you're a good note-taker. Don't aim to memorize definitions, try to understand concepts because that is what you are tested on. 3 points EC for 0 absences and tests are curved.

Professor Solomon is AMAZING! If you are really passionate about advertising, you will love his class. 10/10 professor. His lectures are interesting, and funny, and relatable. Only has 3 exams that make up your grade, offers extra credit for each one, perfect attendance gets 3% points added to final grade. Highly recommend taking the class! I studied my butt off, however, but know of others who slacked and failed.

Has years of rigorous experience in the field, and that exudes off his lectures. Take solid notes and take the class seriously and you should do well--the three tests are all manageable but specific/conceptual enough that you still need to work for a strong grade. His end-of-term speech is phenomenal; earned a lot of my and other students' respect.

Barry Solomon knows exactly what he is teaching- he wrote the textbook. If you study exactly whats in the textbook you should be fine in the class. Take Professor Solomon!! He makes his advertising class so entertaining- the best communications course I've taken so far. He made his own (small) textbook so you don't even really have to take notes. Just pay attention & pass the tests. That's all he has in his class; and better yet- they're all curved! Seriously, he curved one of my tests by 12%.

All you have to do is: buy the textbook (it's in outline form, he wrote it), come to class and write down notes, and study. There are 3 tests in the class that determine your grade. He does give extra credit opportunities and heavily favors kids that come to class everyday. You come in for the time slot and then you leave.

Barry Solomon's class taught me a lot. You will learn all about advertising and the advertising industry. His lectures are hilarious and awesome I looked forward to them every week. I didn't really care for Barry that much as a person, but as a professor he knows what he's doing. He really knows the ins and outs of advertising, very knowledgable if you care about learning in this class. If you don't (like I did) get the textbook, go to class (extra credit for not missing class), memorize notes from the textbooks, and get an A.

Barry is a great professor and a great guy. You can tell he's very passionate about his niche (advertising, obvi). The class covered a ton of info, some interesting, some not so much. We watched over 100 ads throughout the semester. His enthusiasm for the subject and personality definitely made it enjoyable. GO TO CLASS. Or you'll 100% fail lol

Solomon is a great professor. Very entertaining lectures and is passionate about teaching advertising. He is a funny guy and makes the class enjoyable. Gives a 3% boost to your final overall grade if you attend every class (87% would go up to a 90%). Also, doesn't give minuses in the class (80%B, not B-)

This class was unlike any other class I have taken before. Lectures are based off of a paperback spiral book that he wrote, so taking notes are easy since the slides match the book exactly. We also watch a lot of ads in the class which I enjoyed because it was interesting to see topics that we are learning implemented into actual ads. Great class!
