I was not looking forward to physics, but barry is extremly helpful! most of his students are taking him again and i would strongly recommend taking his 1442 class!
Awesome guy and awesome teacher! He lets you know exactly what he expects from you and he is seriously all about his students- feel free to go by his office and hang out because there will be tons of other students there. He even cooked for us one day! Take him, study HARD, learn alot, and have fun! Tests and HW are tough, but worth it to have him!
Had him for both 1441 and 1442. HW are pretty hard but if you go to him for help, he basically gives you the solution. Tests are very similar to HW. Class adds up to more than 100% so he drops about 10-15% of your lowest grade, which could be your lab grade. Easy A. Class did so well one time that he cooked for us. Awesome prof!
I really should have failed this class, but he passed me anyway. His homework is a little hard, but you can go to him or the physics clinic and they will pretty much do it for you. He is a really cool guy, and a great teacher.
great teacher... do your homework and you'll be fine. helps as much as he can..
AWESOME TEACHER AND PROFESSOR!! He's not only extremely knowledgeable but enlightning. Physics is now more comprehensible and more common sense than all three HS physics classes I took! If you don't understand, he'll help you and he's almost ALWAYS available in/out of class. Def wish he taught 1444!! And he's funny too!
Bless this proffessor... if you don't know Dr. Berry you don't know Physics... he should be listed with Einstein!! No exagguration!! very knowledgeble and get this HE CAN TEACH IT... very clear, understanding, and very very flexible.... take him or don't take physics at all.
HANDS DOWN THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. I liked Physics and Barry has made made me like it even more. He is always willing to help, just go to his office. Homework is difficult, but working in a group makes it do able. His test are a lot like the homework so there are few surprises. His mood, tone, and knowledge makes him an AMAZING professor.
AWESOME PROFESSOR!!! you honestly deserve what you make in this class! if you do the work and study hard, you will get a good grade! if you don't, then you don't. simple as that....1 rule: just DONT SLACK OFF! totally recommend this professor!
Barry makes the subject very interesting and he himself is very knowledgeable. He is also funny and helpful with homework. I would totally recommend him to teach all physics courses.
1. Very clear on his lectures. 2. Answers all your questions 3. gives a fair amount of work 4. he is really nice and funny 4. he gives formula sheets 5. You can get an A if you do all work and study. My final comment is that he is the best physics professor in my college career. I recommend to take him above anyone else. You will learn from him.
If you have never made sense of physics, and want to, Barry Spurlock is your guy. awesome teacher.funny.smart aleck.A good Human being above all. his office is where u want to be for HW and the week of test. if u understand the hw, you are good. Ask him if you don't, he'll explain. Lenient grading. Not a blowoff though.
Great professor. Really popular amongst the students for a reason. The home work is challenging and will take you some time to compete, but he will help you with it in his office pretty much any time he isn't in class. He also understands that most people are taking his classes for core credit and grades the tests very easily.
Barry is the best physics teacher ever! He makes the hardest parts of physics easy and understandable. I wish that he could teach more classes so I could take him again.
I highly recommend this professor! He grades very fairly. He is very helpful when it comes to HW and for the test studying the HWs is enough, although reading from the textbook to understand concepts just depends from person to person. If you do your HW yourself then it's not hard at all to get an A. For me this class was an easy A. TAKE HIM FO SHO
Best prof I've ever had. Did the homework before his test and did fine. Go to his office to understand the material and you should be good.
He's incredibly helpful with the hw and makes everything seem easy. The tests are always curved so its easy to get an A. I strongly recommend this professor.
A lot better than Dr. Lewis Best teacher. You will understand the material and the Test you receive partial credit. Wears funny chemistry shirts that you learn to appreciate. Makes the class laugh and have fun with physics. Which I dreaded coming into the class.
Take this Professor, I am a non physics major and he was GREAT. Take him for 1442 as well! Don't take Farbin's class. You will get totally lost. Spurlock helped me pass physics!
He is really helpful. Makes the subject fun and you start loving it. He has tough homeworks but you get a hold of them, he is extremely helpful. Just go to the physics clinic and he is there to help you.
Awesome professor! The homework and tests are no joke, but he does give curves. Makes himself available to his students, if you go by his office he is always willing to explain something a 2nd (or 3rd...) time.
Took him for 1441/1442 and he is awesome as awesome can be! Really cares about his students, he even cooked for us a couple of times and back when I had him would let us all hang out in his office area- there were always at least 6 ppl there. Good times good times!
Took him for 1441 and 1442. Test and hw can be pretty difficult. Curves on tests are usually high and you'll need it, most likely. Very caring professor, go to his office if you need extra help. I had a hard time paying attention in lecture but still did well in class. Best physics prof at UTA!
His class is difficult but physics in general is hard unless you are interested in that subject. Do all problems of the HW. I find that the guys at 007 are more helpful then the tutors. Do not need the book. He gives more then enough HW problems to do over and over. Awesome teacher take him!!! BTW GO TO CLASS!!!
He changed the format of his exams. No more free resp, it's all MC. So no partial credit. Which is frustrating, but I still managed an A. Barely. His tests have 8 easy peesy questions, then 3 super hard ones. Curves are given, and he generous with them. Hilarious and witty teacher; you'll enjoy class. Just not the hmwk or tests.
Awesome teacher, hands down one of the coolest teachers I've ever had. Just be sure to do ALL of the online hw as some questions appear on tests and read the text book before class to help clarify. Absolutely changed my viewing of physics and now I actually enjoy it!!!
He is awsome professors, he always want students to pass, interest, and learn. I suppose to fail this class but he curved my grade and I made a C. Physics is not easy thoughts...
Ah Barry, the physics wizard at uta. Go to his classes, very fun. If you had him for 1443, then you know what to expect, nothing new, except this time you'll be in his realm of circuits and electricity. Most of the tests will be hard, but naturally he gives a curve to help you out.
SPURLOCK! the Physics God! Definitely take him, he'll be a professor you'll never forget. As hard as Physics is, he makes it simple and easy. His tests aren't hard if you study the homework and notes. Make sure Make Sure MAKE SURE to do your HW in his office hours! He's available after hours and through email. He REALLY CARES! Should be an easy A
As cool as he is, I'm not going to take him for PHYS II, it's suicide to be in this class, especially if you're a kid who doesn't like to raise your hand. Almost half the kids dropped out. Tp pass this class, you must read book before class, or he will leave you in the dust! Homework actually is helpful, buy solution manual. Test is nice and short.
He is teaches well and quickly. Class usually gets out early. No mandatory attendance. His tests have easy, a few medium, and about 2 extremely hard problems. Theyre all multiple choice(i.e. no credit for work). However, he does curve the test grades. Our class average was around 65 without the curve. The hwmk is extremely annoying.
He's a magic man. Class is hard but he's one of those professors that really cares about his students, and cares about the subject as well. Will stop a lecture to help anyone who is stuck, and finds ways to make class interesting, and will pretty much answer any question you have about physics.
The tests were 12 questions. 5 easy, 4,5 medium, and 2,3 very difficult. All in all, he was very intelligent and more than willing to help out his students.
He goes extremely fast and only covers the super basics of each chapter. He does one example and sometimes covers multiple chapters in less than an hour. If I hadn't taken physics C in high school, I would have failed this class. The test format is ridiculous and he refers to the problems as sadistic. But, he is happy to help if you don't get it.
Take him! That's all you need to know. He's so helpful. Lectures are the most fun you'll ever get out of physics. It's a VERY HARD class, but if you read the book, come to class, practice, do the HW, go to the review sessions (which are like $5) and get extra help, you'll have an A. I've never understood physics, and now I have an A+ in the class!
Great professors he helps a lot on test with curves. My advice is so your homework and get the solutions guide it will help. If you make A on homework it will help
He was a great teacher, do take him if you want to learn and understand Physics.
everyone told me to take him..but apparently he changed his entire teaching style this time & powerpoint is extremely hard to follow. Texts on screen are small...and test was tricky, something I didn't see him doing on his old tests. I guess i just got unlucky, maybe it would have been different if i had taken him earlier
Awesome professor! I'd never liked physics prior taking his class. He really cares about students and that's what I love about him. His lecture is interesting. I never get bored in his class. Answers email quickly. And He's funny too. Take him if you can!
He goes out of his way to make the subject difficult. Then he brags about it. Lectures are now all Powerpoint. His main goal is to speed through the material so that we dont have to attend class. Rather than help us review for the test, he cancels class before exam. Sometimes two classes before the exam. I had a bad experience so I dropped. Run!
WORST professor I ever had! DO NOT take classes with him. his test are unfair. test only have 12 multiple choices and all the multiple choices are actually the same (only one or two decimal numbers different). and he doesnt know how to teach!
Powerpoint lectures are painful. But they are recorded so you can skip class and watch them later. He is funny, but I didnt pay UTA to be entertained. He seems upset when someone asks a question. I think hes been teaching the class too long. Doesnt care. Time for someone new and exciting. Try someone else.
If you have the option, take his class. No contest.
He's a smart guy. He does teach a few ideas not in the textbook to benefit the engineers in the room. Always replies to questions sent via email. Tests are hard and MasteringPhysics is a drag. "MasteringAnything" is a drag. Labs have been easy so far. Lectures are online so missing class won't set you too far back.
Dr. Spurlock loves answering student's questions and puts his explanations in simple to understand terms that encourage critical thinking and looking at concepts in a practical way. Long homework assignments and challenging tests may seem scary, but I find that Dr. Spurlock's method rings true: the only way to learn Physics is to DO Physics.
One thing is true, if you do not read/study before class, you WILL be left in the dust because he has a really fast pace.
The most difficult part of the class is TIME. Most tests cover at least 6 chapters! It is a fast paced intro course by design. Not his fault. He makes it fun. Barry definitely knows and loves physics.
Excellent physics lectures...he's a physicist with years of valuable experience.
Great professor! Tried to take phys 1 with a different professor, and had to drop. he was such an awful professor the class average on the first test was a 30. Spurlock does a fantastic job of making a difficult subject doable. Recommend to everyone!
TAKE DR. SPURLOCK! He makes physics very easy to understand and is incredibly helpful! Most physics professors at UTA come with horror stories, but Dr. Spurlock is an excellent professor whether you have an interest in physics or not!
I took him about a year ago. I remember he told us his tests were on the difficult side because he wanted to prepare us for what's ahead. At the time I didn't buy it. At all. But now I have to admit he knew what he was doing, and I'm thankful I took him. Things went from F=MA to F=ML. Hindsight is always 20/20. Thanks, Barry!
Dr. Spurlock is GREAT!!!! He is a very relaxed professor who is not intimidating whatsoever. Extremely approachable, friendly, and always willing to help you understand material if you don't get it. His tests are challenging though, if you want to make an A you will have to work for it but it is not impossible to do. He is generous on the curves
Really great professor. It's true that the tests and homework are often very difficult, but pay attention to his lectures and you should be fine. He records his lectures and puts them online, so missing a class isn't catastrophic. He's also really friendly and approachable, and always answered emails quickly. Highly recommended.
Dr. Spurlock is awesome! Anyone who can teach me physics well enough for me to get an A is by definition amazing at communicating information effectively (I suck at math). I recommend him to everyone!
Amazing teacher, Im taking him for 1442 for spring 2014 and you wont regret it.
He is nice and funny, but unfortunately he is not a teacher you want to have for physics. He makes the class a million times harder than it should be. He speaks over your head so if you can't catch up- tough for you. His exams are VERY hard, and he always puts one question on the test that is out of this world. Stay away. Plenty other professors
Fantastic teacher. He is extremely approachable & very helpful. Physics is not easy and it's doable with this teacher. You need to do your part & study & he will do his part & try to get you to understand physics. It's easy to get discouraged in this subject, but just keep with it. Barry will do everything he can to get you to succeed.
I actually enjoyed showing up for class and am looking forward to taking a class with him next semester.
Barry is amazing. He is the most down to earth professor I've ever met, and will always be there to help and encourage you. He is always available by email, and his office is in the clinic. He tends to extend homework deadlines, and grades tests on a curve. There is always extra credit on the homework. He wants you to learn and succeed.
This class is HARD. He moves very fast and the tests are impossible. Only 12 questions with the next question being harder than the last. He is a good teacher though and knows his stuff. He curves a lot but it's still pretty difficult.
I took Dr. Spurlock in the spring of 2014. He is a great professor, because he knows the subject very well and can communicate this knowledge very effectively with undergraduates. Homework assignment due each week online, 3 exams, and a final. Book is a must have, and class attendance is recommended. But STUDY hard because those tests are tough!
Really great professor who makes the class fun and interesting. He does teach at a fast pace, though, and he really challenges his students. His tests were multiple choice and the last two were always the really hard ones, probably to see which students stand out. Then, he curves the grades if necessary. I worked hard in the class and managed a B.
I love Dr. Barry! He is such a good lecturer! You should definitely take his class!
I was worried that the large class size might make it difficult to keep up in his class. But I have come to find that Dr. Barry is the best professor I've had in a long time. He does an exceptional job at explaining concepts in lecture and is very approachable if help is needed with homework /etc Highly recommend.
He is very nice and helpful. His lectures are very interesting and energetic. Spurlock knows his stuff and can not only teach Physics, but any aspect of science. His tests are a little challenging, but If you study, You are sure to pass.
Dr. Spurlock is a very good and straight forward teacher. So much so that when he explains something you will undoubtedly feel dumb for not getting it on your own. You will work for your grade but he always helps, especially if he knows you are trying.
Barry is a great teacher! He makes you actually understand physics, and makes physics really cool! You have to work for your grade though. But he usually curves the tests so you'll be fine. I definitely recommend him!
Am i the only one amazed by the fact that this guy wore a different physics related t shirt every single lecture? Very intelligent guy, approachable, fair and you can tell he cares. He can talk over your head sometimes but it's your responsibility to study and clear the gaps. Put in the work and you will be just fine. Watch out for 11 & 12 on test!
He is a good teacher. Lectures can be a bit fast. Homework can be pretty tough, but you can always come to Physic Clinic. There are video lectures in case you miss class and the book is not mandatory.
Test are VERY hard with no review Very little understanding with very little help
He is the only professor I've known to acknowledge and respect the fact that we paid money to take his class, so he wants us to learn. All lectures are posted online. Although its physics, he manages to keep the lectures interesting. All homework is online. He is very organized. He's very good at teaching physics. I highly recommend him.
Best physics teacher you'll have!
Spurlocks awesome! Sure, you have tons of hmwk, but the homework helps with the exam because its 3x harder than the exams that the test look easier. He's a funny guy, if you need help he'll try his best, but honestly he knows soo much about physics I don't think he knows how to dumb it down sometimes for students. Took him for 1441 and 1442!
The material is difficult but if you go to class and actually do the homework instead of googling the answers you will do better. 3 tests, 12 questions each. 1-5 are easy, 6-9 are medium, 10-12 are super hard. Online homework on Quest due every 1-3 weeks. Curves a lot. I sat on the line of a B/C but didn't do well on the final (non comprehensive).
Grade Breakdown 3 tests at 15% each (45%) Lab (15%) Final (25%) Homework (15%) Bonus Homework (%1) General rules for an A: Miss no less than two problems per test. Understand the quest problems (especially the calculus ones) Final is hard. Do some bonus HW, he'll curve you more. Lowers cutoffs at end (88.00% or higher is an A)
Spurlock is a very entertaining physics teacher. I made an A in both of his classes mainly by rewatching lectures and understanding the problems he did in class. I don't believe that studying the homework will help. You can still make an A in this class if you get B's on all of the exams because the lab and homework grades bring your average up.
One of the best professors I've ever had! Even if you are not the best at physics, he explains it in a way that will get you to understand. There's weekly homework, but it will help out with the tests. His tests are usually not bad except the last problem, but he curves. Take him!
Great guy!! Teaches fine, but his tests are IMPOSSIBLE!! I don't think anybody realizes how hard you have to study for a class like this! The Quest HW is even worse. Pulled all nighters and all that!! I wouldn't recommend him for this class if you are pre med and getting college Physics alone! My chances at med school are over cause of this class.
Here's the thing, it doesn't matter how good of a professor Spurlock is. This teacher makes the class too challenging to the point where it is hard to learn even if he explains things well. His Quest assignment are challenging and his test are very unreasonable in my opinion. If you can devote your life to Physics, take him. If not, DON'T!
Sigh........... the homework is impossible....... hard tests...... very little grades........ made a C....... so hard
Dr. Spurlock changed his teaching style. He's not as engaging as some of the students says he is. It's really sad since I was really looking forward to actually learning from him. And plus he gives too much busy work which doesn't help for the test to be honest.
Barry is a good Prof, Goes over the material and concepts really well. The tests are hard. But if you do the HW and Bonus HW diligently you shall be good. Miss class and you wont pass
Best professor I have ever had, Hands down. Take him, you won't regret it.
One of the worst professors, Hands down. Don't take him, you'll regret it!
I loved spirlock. He made me enjoy physics so much that I would like to switch majors to it. He is very knowledgeable and pretty funny. Class was not always necessary and he is very flexible with due dates. The first test is the hardest.
Amazing lecture, absolutely not boring powerpoint. His hw is pretty easy if you really put in your effort. If you still struggle, Physics Clinic would definitely help you out. For tests, just to make sure that you understand how to solve problems in HW and HW bonus then you would easily get 100. His questions is straightforward, not tricky at all
3 tests before finals. Each test 4-5 prblms in first 2 pgs. Plug # into formula & use basic knwldge you pass the test! But last pg having 3 prblms - hardest ever! Anyways Barry is a vry cool professor, well prepared for lectures and gives his best to hammer it into us. Take him! bcz even if you aren't a physics guy u'll pass by putting in some work
Spurlock is a great person, but his exams are rough compared to other professor's exams at UTA. His exams are usually 12 questions with the last question being insanely difficult. You'll most likely get the last question wrong (like 95% of the class) and never score over a 92 on an exam. If you miss 2 questions you are automatically at a B or less.
Barry is a great professor, but to me physics wasn't just one of the things i liked doing since it was a new subject, and it can get very confusing. Lectures aren't so bad and are online. Homework is tougher than tough. His tests are gruesome, about 12 questions each test (not final) with the last 3 being ridiculously challenging.
Dr. Spurlock isn't a bad professor. He teaches pretty well for the most part. His grading system is beyond belief however and would caution anyone who takes Spurlock. He makes you work to the core, HW is hard (so many problems), tests are harder! He has no final BUT his tests are weighted pretty heavily!
Like many others have said, he is a very cool guy. But his class is SO HARD! I would absolutely recommend this class if you ARENT taking anything else, it will require all your time! The Quest HW is so long and hard, always spent 3hrs on it (each section) and sometimes even with study buddies. Only 3 test, no final, 12 questions with the
He is an amazing lecturer and makes things very easy to understand. Tests aren't made to trick you, if you found the answer via your work it will be an answer choice on the test. There is a lot of homework but he is willing to help and there is a great clinic available, plan to spend the whole semester there. He curves the test scores and the class
Dr. Spurlock is great! He's not easy but for good reason, he wants to prepare you for the upper level classes! If you want an easy A, then you will not like Spurlock, of you want to succeed in life, take this man! He's the best! Plus his office is located inside the Physics clinic, so he'll help you at your convince along with others!
He's one of the best Professors I've ever had. The subject itself is ridiculously hard, but the fact that he can make it interesting and accessible to someone who can't even do math pretty much says it all. You work for your grade in this class, but he cares about his students and makes coming to lecture so, so worth it.
The homework isn't usually too tough but if you find yourself in a bind go to the Physics Clinic and get help. Lectures are engaging it's evident Barry is passionate about the material he teaches. The tests are definitely the hard but if you understand the material and can do the homework by your self you'll be fine.
He was a great professor that I truly enjoyed. He is extremely smart and knows just how to explain things to help people understand. Notes for the entire semester were posted the first day of class and lectures were recorded. He really cares about his students, their success, and what they take away from his class. Great guy, great class.
You must work for your grade in this class, beware of his question 12 on his exams.
Did a good job of making the class enjoyable. Lectures were worth attending. Homeworks not bad, and tests could be pretty nuts. Easy to pass, HARD to get an A.
This class was the hardest class I ever took. He makes you work for your grade; If you don't pass the first test don't worry you can still bring up your grade with lab and homework. To prepare for test study the homework and attend the review sessions. Lab was a breeze its an easy A. I never got my AHA moment in physics hope you do tho.
Okay I will start off by saying that I am awful in physics and I got a B in the class( more effort i could have gotten an A). He is super hilarious and actually makes the class funny. Class is pretty easy. Lab is an easy A. Do your homework,do well in lab, decent on your exams its a guaranteed A/B.I love this professor I'm taking him again!
This guy is awesome, he got is undergrad in Electrical Engineering and his PHD in Physics. In terms of the college system he knows how both worlds work. If you are on an Engineering degree path he will try to convert you to Physics. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about Physics. If you are motivated you will learn a ton. A+ Professor.
I hated high school physics, and I don't really like it now, but Barry was an amazing professor to have. He was funny in lecture, and you could tell he understood how hard the material could be for us. He wants to make sure you understand what's going on. My only complaint was there was a lot of homework. Other than that, just put in some effort.
Excellent professor, you will learn in his classes if you try to. You need to earn an A, but passing and getting a B is very, very easy. Put the work in, and you'll be fine in his class(es). Make sure to go to class too, even though it isn't mandatory.
If you want an A in this class you're definitely going to have to work hard for it. At the same time, it's actually kind of hard to fail this class. He's a really nice guy and is very willing to curve.
Barry is cool guy. He cares about everyone going through the class and does a great job setting up the class. I felt the lectures were a little rushed and I spend a lot of time outside of class understanding content he lectured about. That being said, test are multiple choice, and he curves tests and your final grade.
I was hesitant about taking physics, but Barry was absolutely amazing! His lectures were easy to understand, and the homework was for the most part based on what we learned in class. The last 3 questions of his tests always tripped me up - but other than that, he made physics super easy to understand! You sill have to study out of class though!
Greatest professor I've ever met!! If you're willing to study Physics, this is the professor you're looking for!! But the materials are quite hard btw
Great guy. Very clear-cut in what he brings into the classroom as a professor and what he expects. All tests are 12 MC.
Barry always has nice stories to tell before class and his lectures are well structured. He has taken the time to create lecture notes for all his lectures and they are a very good summary of each concept. He had a lot of guest speakers talk about opportunities for research which is nice cause it shows he cares about us.
He knows his stuff and teaches it in a great way. By no means if you know the stuff he teaches, you have a guarantee to not fail, doesn't mean you will get an A. For the people truly ambitious and determined, take his class.
Dude is awesome. Lectures were great, if you need help he is ready to give it. Study study study though. I would say Chegg is your textbook, cause the HW is hard.
The best professor I've taken. Makes lectures really fun and entertaining with his humor. Don't be afraid to ask him any questions, he is there to help. Make sure you take time to study for the exams, especially for number 12...
Barry is an AMAZING professor, he is understanding, funny, and honestly cares about each and everyone of his students. He also makes it impossible to fail. If you fail his class then it is your own fault. Remember, he will not respond to anything other than Barry so do not go in there calling him professor or Mr. he will not respond.
A lot of people seem to love Spurlock, but he's alright to me. I REALLY love his lecture notes, but his lectures.. not so much (boring). He just reads off the slides, not really explaining the concepts. He will usually give a small curve on a test if the average is low. You will need to prepare a bit for the tests if you want an A in this class.
His tests are 12 questions and the last 4 are difficult as hell. I am only passing the tests due to good guessing because my god is by my side .
It's tough. The guy is good at lecturing. He does read off of a powerpoint which can get frustrating on a few things. His tests are intense. He does curve but it's most time only a few points.
He only uses powerpoint with over 40 points on each slide with 30 or more slides each lecture. He also barely covers the powerpoint. He also goes out of his way to call students dumb for using calculators or make fun of questions. "How could you possibly be confused?" His response after asking if anyone was confused. Then he did not answer the Q
best professor for physics. If you go over the review questions you can easily get an A. but each of his review has 40 to 50 questions.
Had him for PHYS 1441 and 1442. If you have any difficulty with math or physics, Dr. Spurlock is incredibly helpful and is willing to work with you to help you succeed. He is easily reachable, even outside of his office hours, and makes a point of making sure that you never feel bad about asking questions, even repetitive ones. DO YOUR HOMEWORK.
HARD! His tests are 12 questions but they get harder towards the end with last being impossible. Teaches so much that the test is barely anything. Powerpoints are messy and super fast but he is VERY knowledgeable. If have basic understanding of physics take him but if you are new DON'T take him. Homeworks are long and you HAVE TO WORK for a grade.
Easy to get a B very difficult to get an A. Exams have 12 questions all with similar answers. He cares that you eventually get the right answer and not just guess it. There were many hw assigments and only 1 pt extra credit overall with lots of work. Lecture is all posted on echo. He solely reads off of a pwrpoint that he also posted before hand.
Extremely organized lectures. A lot of homework if you include the bonus homework. Contrary to other reviewers, it is very possible to get 100s on the tests and at least 5-10 people do (myself included). Do the practice tests and understand the material and you will get an A. The lab component is an easy 100 and will help your average.
For the people truly ambitious and determined, take his class. His lectures are fantastic, well organized, and he is great at inspiring the curiosity and imagination in his students. He is one of the very best professors I have ever had and has a clear grading system. Take your time to learn the material, ask questions, and you will do well.
This prof is awesome, the semester is structured well in advance and included on the syllabus. He covers exactly what is on the syllabus. He even provides lecture notes, just show up to lecture and follow along. The book was not used. Homework is done online in expertTA, which as a homework service is 7/10. Wish i could take him again.
He is an amazing prof. Physic is hard for Biochem major like me. His lecture is easy to understand. But the test was pretty hard. He gave nice curve but you have to put your effort into it. Pretty hard class.
Hard material. You will need to put a lot of effort into this class in order to do well. Professor is good, but the material gets insane around exam 2. Homework prepares you for the exam, but you might be spending a lot of time in the physics clinic like I did. Lectures are recorded on echo360 which is a plus! Good luck!
He is very knowledgeable and has a clear grading criteria. 3 midterms and final make up most of the grade, and each tests, especially the last page, is ridiculously difficult. However, his lectures, notes, and practice tests do help. He also curves the grades, even bumped up a letter grade even if 5 points off, all around best professor to take.
Solid choice for 1444 especially if you've had a break between physics 1 & 2. His lecture notes are organized and easy to read. He's also very helpful with homework questions in the clinic and email. Only major complaint was his lectures are death by PowerPoint including practice problems. If you learn better by pen and paper, take someone else.
Great prof. will take him for phys 2. loves what he's doing. very friendly down to earth guy and helpful. Not an easy A. doesn't make things hard, it's just how physics is. curves each test. lectures are just reading off of his slides (available on canvas). If you love physics (and challenge) then tests will be fun if not, they'll be a nightmare.
I don't have doubt that he is smart. But while dealing with the student he is the worst professor in physics department. He thinks everyone have PHD degree just like him and they know all the course already. His test are unencessary heavy and ridiculous. It feels like he doesn't want student to get good grade. I got but A but dont take his class.
I love Barry as a person, but his exams suck. 12 multiple-choice questions with increasing difficulty until the last 2 are so hard that only 30-40% of the class gets them correct. I never have enough time for these exams and would end up just guessing on the last 2. If you do all the bonus problems, you get marginal extra credit. Not worth it.
He is cool. He is smart, knowledgeable. He understands your feelings. He designs the class to exploit these things. It's hard, not impossible. He overdoes it on purpose, but not to kill you. It's not the nicest class, lectures are hit/miss. He is a standout prof though. Respect his style and decisions. Go to PHYS Clinic to study. TAs are SMART.
Spurlock doesn't teach, and when he does lecture the way he teaches the material is confusing. He tries to fail you on his tests which always have 10% very hard questions. I got an A mainly based on the material I had already learned in AP Phys 1 and Phys 2 in high school. Easy to pass his class.
Barry doesn't teach, he gives a basic example and skips the steps. He then tries to immediately get the class to answer a problem 3x harder with no practice. He was very petty and demeaning to the students this semester. He tried to report 1/3 the class for cheating for using chegg when he said the test was "open Internet".
I took this professor solely because he was the only one with the most decent rating and review on this website. Taking this professor was the worse decision of my life. He is very condescending and unhelpful. He mainly reads word by word off his slides. His exams are purposely hard and made for you to miss the last few questions. Don't take him.
Mr. Bell Curve. His Physics class exists only to satisfy a bell curve. During the COVID 19 situation he purposely made the class tougher, while still using the same old course materials, knowing that the pandemic could potentially mess up his 70 course average. He would rather see his class break apart than to have his distribution model broken.
Supposedly the best physics 2 professor is quite a joke. If I could give him a rating of a 0 or in the negative range I would. Spurlock is quite unprofessional and his intentions initially are positive, but you find that he doesnt care about the class one bit. Will change test percentages on the fly and falsely accuse you of cheating if he can.
Although I survived, the way he handles things and the way he structures tests is the worst Ive seen as a student. He will twist his words around to cover his butt and put students in terrible spots because of his actions. If you can, steer far from this professor if you desire your grade and or false accusations of cheating.
His tests consist of 12 questions that are designed to pretty much fail any student who isnt majoring in science fields. His character is awful and is very unprofessional when he allowed us to use online resources and then recants his statement after the test, resulting in a heard of students being falsely accused of cheating.
Terrible professor and is a trickster in his own words. Will try to fail you if you arent a physics major. I regret taking him even if I somehow ended with an A. He will most likely favor those who are like him and accuse everyone else of cheating if he finds a way to do so in his twisting of words. Save yourself from agony.
During the COVID 19 he stated that his tests would be open notes, open internet. Thus people use their resources, right after that he accused everyone in cheating, rather admitting he said open notes and internet he deleted the post on canvas and told us we were lying. He became more PETTY, and our final counted 45% of our Final grade.
For my finals, I had to give up on my 3000 level classes, and study for this 1000 level class, only because he made everything hard. There are only 12 questions in tests, each problem should get harder. I took this class during COVID, and he said that tests will be online with an open internet, but he ended up blaming students for cheating.
He assumes that everyone took a Ph.D. in physics like him. His lectures are really not that helpful. A 1000 level class should not be this hard. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, he offered little to no assistance or resources. What to expect for this class: his outdated formula sheet, unnecessarily hard tests, additional panic, not enough resources to study, and pettiness. Cant believe that I will say this but I prefer to catch the virus than to deal with this class
Lots of exam chegg cheaters whining about the Spring 2020 Semester, they got caught and now are mad. The A cutoff was lowered to an 86. I wouldn't hesitate to take him as his lectures are very well organized. The last problems on each test can be quite hard, but you don't need to get them right to make an A in the class.
Dr. Spurlock is a brilliant teacher. Don't feel bad about asking questions during or outside class, he will work with you. His class is hard because the subject is hard, I had a C for the majority of the semester and I pulled a last minute A. Study a TON for the exams, they get pretty hard. His lectures are recorded in case you miss anything btw
This class is tough(GIVES THE HARDEST TESTS) and Spurlock didn't make it any better in fact he made it harder with his pettiness and lack of understanding from the hardships that we students faced during the pandemic His lectures consist of reading off power points and its very boring and I would have to go to YouTube to find better explanations.
So this is the best the school has to offer for physics and its extremely sad, when the pandemic dropped he vanished and left us with lecture notes, his test are non sense. If you can take physics somewhere else for the love of God please do so this school really needs to review their professors specifically for physics and mathematics.
If youre not already good at physics, DO NOT take this class! He just reads typed out/already solved problems to you and doesnt solve it with you. This is not helpful nor is it engaging. He was very petty throughout the pandemic. I still got a B but I feel like I didnt learn much because it was so hard and stressful. Take at TCCC if you can!
He is the best in the Physics department! His lectures are amazing, he works every problem step by step in class. The exam problems are slightly easier than the ones from class. He lets you know what to prepare for on the exams. He answers emails very fast and always answers questions! He makes lectures very fun and interesting. His jokes are great
Dont take him
DO NOT TAKE HIM !Spurlock is a very CUNNING and PETTY man at first he makes it seem like he cares for the students but he really doesn't. He doesn't teach like most UTA PHYS professors , just reads off slides, which is very boring and ineffective. His exams are 12 questions and he makes the last question impossible to pass. Don't risk your GPA.
Im taking Dr. Spurlock for the fall semester. So far all his classes are prerecorded lectures from last year. PowerPoints are very very busy and hard to keep track of whats going on. He goes very vast and since you never hear or see him all you have are his old PowerPoints with the wrong dates for homeworks and tests! Wouldnt recommend
Did not adjust well to teaching online, just had prerecorded lectures and lecture notes that had little correlation to the homework and quizzes. Quizzes were incredibly difficult and often failed them. Using his notes and lectures didn't help in the slightest. If you are taking PHYS 1444 DO NOT TAKE SPURLOCK.
I took him in the Fall semester of 2020 online for PHYS 1441, and ALL the lectures are PRE-RECORDED (already a red flag) from a previous semester prior to Covid-19. His explanations are never clear. The material in the lectures goes by super fast, and the HW and Quiz are 10x more difficult than examples in the lecture. Some are not even taught.
Dr. Spurlock is the most egotistical professor I've ever had. When asking questions via email, he comes off as condescending and overall makes you feel stupid. All lectures are prerecorded sometimes hard to follow. I would rather be deployed than take his class ever again, let alone speak with him.
Fall 2020 during COVID-19. Online lectures are asynchronous because he posts pre-recorded lectures from what seems like 2003. You CANNOT even see what he is pointing at on the white board because all you can see is him and first row of students. Failed every quiz, homework's are lengthy. If you like your mental health, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Barry Spurlock is the hardest professor I have ever encountered. Took him fall 2020. Quiz over the material every week worth 2-5% of your grade every Thursday leaves you in a constant state of panic as they are extremely difficult. Hw due on Tuesday makes it hard to learn the material in time. Lectures barely help because you only see a PowerPoint.
Worst Professor by far, his quizzes and tests are all fill in the blank. If you accidentally input the wrong number there's no going back to resubmit it. Had him online this semester and doesn't even bother to do live lectures, he posts lectures from two years ago and it seems like he doesn't give a single thing about his students. DO NOT TAKE HIM
I took him as an online class this year. Ive never seen him in a team meeting or in person. All of his lectures are pre recorded from last year, the homework is really different from what you learn from his lectures. The quizzes are really ridiculous, you just have one chance to answer the question, you cant change it even you still have time left
Took him Fall 2020 and it was HORRIBLE. Lectures were prerecorded from a few years back and he doesn't even work through the problems that he shows in them. Homework due every Tues and a quiz every Thurs which were both fill in blank. For the quizzes, you couldn't even go back and change your answer if you still had time left. DO NOT TAKE HIM
This Professor is honestly horrible . From the beginning his lectures are recorded which is a horrible idea especially since COVID 19 then he has so many restrictions such as lockdown browser with a webcam. He grades everything really heavy and you will pretty much have something to do in that class EVERYDAY . DO NOT TAKE HIM!
His lectures are prerecorded from the year before, which is lame asf. You also have to compete against your classmates in order to make a good grade, with 20% making an A. While he isn't he easiest, if you want to actually learn about the physics, this is the prof you'll want to take. If you want the A, take someone else. Also, no extra credit
Spurlock is a well-qualified teacher, it feels that he has taught his curriculum too many times for him to be excited about it. He tries to deter cheating by having exams that are too hard for their own good. Type in answer with no partial credit. You will suffer and feel like you know nothing. The class is curved so, in the en all is made right.
Gives you the solution to problems without explaining how to solve in his horribly recorded/ancient lectures. (seriously, can't even see the board) Tests are super hard and his steps for responds are ridiculous. Makes you scared to look down at your own paper!! Grading is weird, but helpful because its impossible to make over a 70 in his class.
If you want an easy A, take another prof. If you want to be a wonderful physicist or engineer, take Barry. My only complaint is his lack of virtual office hours (only contactable via email). BOTHER HIM UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND. If you don't give up, he won't give up on you! A simple "point me in the right direction" or "jog my memory" works wonders.
I took physics simultaneously with organic chemistry, and 90% of my studying time was dedicated to this class. Extremely fast-paced and even though I made an A, I was left feeling like I knew nothing. No partial credit on quizzes or exams. Condescending in emails. Honestly, this class was a nightmare. Don't him take while this class is online.
hes super funny and it makes his lectures easier to pay attention to. i would have gotten an A if we had class in person, as it was more difficult online, but physics is hard and overall he helped the best he could. i got accommodations halfway through the semester and he was super nice and understanding about it
If you are doing it online, BELIEVE ME, it's too HEAVY and a LOT OF HWs. Requires LOCKDOWN Browser. Most TOUGHEST GRADING but I think the way of grading was GREAT! If you are in the TOP 20% of the class then you'll get an 'A'.
Easily one of the best professors I have ever taken. Can't recommend him enough to anybody planning to take Physics.
One of the best professors I have ever taken and a wonderful person. He makes the lectures so fun and engaging to attend.
I actually enjoyed taking his class and looked forward to the lectures. The lectures were easy to follow along with the homework. He made the topics very easy to understand and the notes given are clear and concise.
Professor Spurlock explains lecture relatively well. What makes his class hard is just the amount of calculus that you need to understand for some topics. It gets easier towards the end of the semester though.
Professor Spurlock is a really good choice for any physics class. He knows his stuff and is great at teaching it. I've heard this from many people already and I will say it also, his class is an easy B/hard A. He curves very nicely and his homework is not that bad. His test can be a little bit challenging. Go to his office hours.
His tests are multiple choice and are ordered by difficulty of the question relative to the current material. Everything is very clear when explained and he will go in depth about how you should think about it, even from a non-engineering prospective. Easiest physics professor to take and will give massive curves
He does curve exams sometimes which is great. But he is pretty condescending as he can be rude if you don't understand something. Our most recent exam, the average was an F and he sent out an email basically getting onto us for the low average which I think is rude. I'd say taking this course is a hit or miss.
He makes PHYS 2 a semi-blow off class. His lectures are meh, the real gem with him is he's very lenient with those who only take this class for requirement. His tests aren't too difficult, and he has an amazing testing policy (you'll see) that'll almost force you to pass. Only issue is that the hw can be very lengthy and time consuming.
One of my favorite professors. Very fair and straightforward grading system. Curves to the class average. Lectures are interesting and engaging. Great to discuss weird physics after class.
Overall this is the best Professor you could have at UTA. I say this because he never gives boring lectures, is always available by email and is willing to help as long as you put the effort. One thing you need to be ready for is the class itself as in being prepared to do lots of homework and studying. As for exams take the time to prepare.
He's funny, but can be condescending, and he believes that the best way to get the class to understand one of the many difficult topics in this class is to "just stare at it, you'll get it." Grades exams generously. He's not great or horrible, just meh.
Professor Spurlock is a great professor who was more than willing to answer any questions. The homework can be long depending on the topic so don't leave it till the last day like I did. Attendance is not required and he records the lectures if you miss a day.
Good professor, and imo very lenient with grades so it's easy to get a good one. The class is high school physics with barely any calculus. We use ExpertTA for the hw and book, and it assigns anywhere from 10-20 HW questions weekly. Attendance not mandatory, recorded lectures on Echo360. My favorite thing is he posts worked test examples on Canvas.
excellent. clear and fun lectures and he always stops to make sure you understand. very approachable and kind. clear about grading criteria. tests are designed to be super easy. he makes things as easy as possible, teaches well, and curves a lot. he made me stop being afraid of physics. replies to emails instantaneously
Good professor, HW is assigned weekly (10-25 questions), and attendance is not mandatory (lectures are recorded). Midterm Exams are 12 questions multiple choice (he gives curves and credit for not attempting)
Spurlock is a great professor to take for PHYS1443. The homework assignments won't take too much of your time, you have a chance to receive 1% extra credit on your final grade. The exams are passable as credit is given for blank answers, the first halves are usually easier, and a curve is never out of the question. Super accessible outside class.
Take him. He's the best professor for 1443 and is a lenient grader. He provides practice tests for midterms and you get 1/4 of your points back if you leave a question blank. Honestly, his homework is harder than the exams. Attendance is not mandatory, and use the lecture notes to your advantage.
Definitely one of the best physics professors at UTA.
By far the BEST physics professor for 1443/1444. He's really good at teaching and making complex topics seem simple, but you still need to practice a lot of problems to truly understand E&M. His homework takes a while so start on that as soon as possible. Tests are 12 questions with the last 3 being the most difficult.
Spurlock is an amazing lecturer for physics! He's funny and is very clear about how he grades and how you can do well. Start on homework early because it is a LOT.
All i can say is take him you wont regret it. His tests have an amazing format. And he is the best option out of all the physics teachers. His slides are pretty amazing.
Dr. Spurlock is an amazing guy. at the end it is physics so it will be hard and you to do a lot of work outside of the class but he makes it easier for students to pass his class and his lectures are so fun. if you need to take physics take it with him, dont even hesitate.
Spurlock is an amazing professor and I highly recommend him for physics. He goes into depth for lectures, his exams are easier than the homework, and he is a lenient grader that not only gives curves for every exam but an additional curve for your overall grade. Just try your best and you are guaranteed to pass.
One of the best professors at UTA. Is able to get class to participate easily, will answer any and all questions until the concept is clear, and is very understanding of the students.
His lectures are amazing and easy to understand. The slides he uses to teach in class are engaging and kept me from zoning out. He tells a couple stories here and there which is great to listen to. Very generous with curving and gives detailed stats about each exam. There is homework that gets pretty time consuming.
He really is a great professor, I was nervous about taking physics but he made it not so scary. I am excited to take the second part of this class with him. He gives ample opportunity for extra credit, he comes in with a good attitude every day and he is eager to teach. I had a hard time following sometimes and had to study hard but he is great.
Awesome professor, he makes everything easy to understand and is very clear with how anything is going to be. Would definitely take him again.
Spurlock is far from perfect, but he is pretty decent. If you don't have a strong base in physics, I suggest you get familiar with basic kinematics concepts before you take his class since his lectures are extremely fast-paced. He is a bit overrated, but compared to the other teachers in the physics department, he is a lot better.
Barry Spurlock is like any other professor pretty average in lecturing the material, but the reason I would advise to take his class is the amount of practice exams, and curves you can get in this class. I never took notes at all and was able to get an higher than a mid B on every exam. The homework's take a long time so do those in advance.
This class takes up a lot of time since there was time-consuming homework on ExpertTA (the worst homework platform ever). If you understand the homework and bonus homeworks you should be fine on the exams. Physics is hard science class in general no matter the professor, but I'm taking PHYS 1442 with him next semester.
Good at explaining the material and answering questions. Tests are somewhat easy if you study and you can get free points if you leave answers blank instead of getting 0 points. Gives previous semester exams which helps a lot. Overall likable person and you can get an A in the class even if you're not a physics genius.
Professor Spurlock is probably the best professor I've ever had at UTA. I was having a rough patch in my personal life when I took his class and ended up missing one of his exams because I wouldn't show up for his classes. I explained my situation to him and he helped me out tremendously. A super caring professor!
Class was fair. Professor wants you to succeed and makes the exams perfectly. The lectures toward the end of the semester are super interesting. The homeworks are the same was PHYS 1443.
Dr. Spurlock was an amazing lecturer and made physics quite fun to learn. His tests (all 12 questions long) range from easy at the beginning to difficult at the end, although if you leave questions blank he gives you points. If you do the bonus HW (worth 1% of your grade) it could be the reason you barely get an A in class (like me).
I don't recommend Barry just take Fajer or Andrew's class instead for 1443. His problems are really difficult. HWs are very lengthy and tedious and count a lot for grade. He promises that he will bump 70% of class to A or B grade but even for that you have to work super hard coz getting a B is also really hardwork. Exams tough to score "good" on.
Awesome professor, but challenging material.
Definitely a must take for Phys 1, Spurlock is very caring towards his students which is reflected in the percentage curves he gives towards his students. His lectures aren't mandatory but you won't want to miss the content. The tests are 12 questions, progressively getting harder as you go, but you'll easily get a B on them without much studying.
This guy being considered the best UTA has to offer from its physics department in terms of teaching speaks volumes about the actual quality of the department itself. When you compare him to the other professors, you could call him "stellar". In actuality, the course is difficult and his lectures are a snoozefest. His talking will PUT YOU TO SLEEP.
Spurlock's class is tough, but his teaching style makes the content engaging. The exams test your understanding, so studying with unstuck AI and the free textbook is key to success.
He's funny and his lectures are entertaining. Straightforward and fair grading. Exams have no trick questions, and are all multiple choice. He explains exactly what you need to do to get the grade you want, and how he curves. Homework uses ExpertTA and is great for learning but sometimes punishing on grade. Review his lecture notes, they are great.
Barry is def who you want for phys 2. He has a very clear grading system and is straight up about it. The class is very difficult starting off but gets easier after midterm 2. He's a funny dude but I feel like doesnt explain stuff the best when it comes to more complex topic. A major reason to take him is just for the grading, it's really good
If you hate physics, he is the right teacher to help you love it. He definitely wants you to get an A. He helps a lot, gives bonus homework, and curves scores generously. Failing his class is an impossible task.
The best of best when it comes to physics. Sometimes trails off into anecdotes but it's bc he understands we need a break. Lots of hw however if you do it after lecture its considerably easier. He also records his lectures on Echo360 so massive plus! Worse part about the course is he uses ExpertTA. I have no idea what the cheaters are on about tbh.
Loved him, the class was hard but he will help if you ask for it. Good about emailing back.
Great professor, has engaging lectures and useful notes that can be accessed online, with all of the lectures being recorded + no required attendance. Not much work required, just 3 tests and a final which are worth 70% of the grade, and then homeworks and separate lab grade 15% each. 70% of the class gets a B or above, almost impossible to fail.
Recommend him over the other physics professors at UTA. Lectures can be kind of boring but he throws in stories, facts, and jokes here and there. Lecture notes are very helpful. Weekly homework and bonus HW. HW can be time consuming sometimes. Curves exams and bumps grades around 86 to an A at the end of the semester (depends on class avg).
Professor Spurlock curved 70% of the class to a B and 35% to an A however the lecture material was hard to learn from. The tests were also difficult. Reviews are sparsely similar to exams. Uses expert TA for homework which isn't the best. Echo 360 for lectures is useful. Very nice professor nonetheless but will have to learn some material yourself.
If you know how to do about 80% of the exams, finish the regular and bonus homework, and do a lot of problems on your own, you have a good chance at getting an A. He tends to breeze by examples or skim his lectures which can be confusing if you're not keeping up with his lecture notes.
Spurlock is a great professor and seems to actually care about his students. If you can, take him for Phys 1 and 2. He puts out test review to help prepare for exams, and curves test grades. His lectures can be a bit difficult to follow, so definitely set aside time to review lecture content.
His lectures were very fast paced with a couple jokes and stories in there. Make sure to ask questions. Both notes and lectures are available to you by Echo360 and ExpertTA, which is where he hosts homework. He wants you to succeed and will curve grades at the end so about 70% of people get a B, and 30% get an A.
Awesome professor, one of the very best I've had. His PowerPoints were very well put-together, and he gave clear explanations. He is also willing to sit with students and walk them through topics until they understand it. Good sense of humor. Passing is not difficult, but an A is well-earned. All tests start off with easy questions and get harder.
The class itself is difficult, but the professor is amazing. He records his lectures, so attendance is not mandatory, but it is absolutely worth it to attend in person. Be prepared to have him attempt to convert you to a physics major, especially if you are in engineering. He might even succeed (many physics majors are a direct result of this)
Barry is one of the only physics professors at UTA who will even complete all of the required material on schedule. Is that a high bar? Not exactly, but it is something. In all seriousness, his lectures are great. They're informative, not too long, and all recorded and uploaded to echo360. If you take physics at UTA, take him.
Lots of homework, his practice tests that he provides aren't exactly like the actual tests unlike some people may say, but they do help. It also helps that he works out a lot of problems in class and lectures are available to watch after class on echo360. His curves are also insane, bumped my final grade of and 85.7 to an A.
