uses same ciriculum for upperdivision classes!!! worst teacher ever!!! the class was packed at the begening of the semester and by the end there were only 12 people left!!!

Used material from his upper division POSC course and denied it even though the tests had POSC 425 written on them. Unfair grading - I got a 40/100 on a perfectly written paper. Made me cry during office hours. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

he is awful. he can't answer questions, and his tests are hard. an 80% is an A so you think its going to be doable, and then he just grades that much harder. he says he grades on a ten point scale, and then he gives you a 10, a 5, or a zero. avoid him at all costs!

At the beginning you think the class is going to be easy, but once you listen to his lectures and take the first test, it is HARD! No one got higher than 80%. For a 100 level class it is extremely difficult! Don't take his class!!! Not worth it
His essay questions are very confusing and complex. He assigns too much reading material that should be read within a short amount of time. His lectures are often boring since there is little class participation.
This is the worst teacher ever! He gives you upper division books, and makes you do a hard book report that you can never fully understand because it is so complex and hard to understand. I'm an A student and I'm barely pulling a C in this class...your chances of getting better than a C are slim to none...DON'T TAKE HIM!

Tell everybody you know: "dont take this teacher!" he grades impossibly hard, he does not help at all, and every year students complain to the dean (but he is tenured so it doesn't do any good)...this semester he ruined my 4.0 with a C, please don't take him
If you can take this class with anyone else than him, you better. But if you have to take him, take notes for all the articles you read, ask him for book recommendations on your report and then use those and show up for every day of the simulation game to get the only easy points in the class. I think he means well but he's very discouraging!!
HORRIBLE teacher! he strays off topic easily and goes on and on forever about stuff thats not even relevent to what we're covering. his test are very hard. i always highlighted...outlined AND studying lecture notes for each test and i still never got higher than a 73 on his test.

Failed 20 graduating (well, they would have been graduating) seniors in our dept required senior seminar. He only passed 4 of us...but with D's. No one got anything higher

If you're not into IR or Poli Sci, do not take Steiner. This guy will work your ass off and give you nothing in return. However, I did learn to think outside the textbook and even recieving a B was very rewarding.

This is a hard class and you are going to make an ass of yourself if you dont read. You can pass with an A but you will never get a clear picture of how you are doing. This class is not for someone who doesn't read and can't handle being put on the spot. Up side I think I actually learned something down side I was a mess for the entire semester trying to get the reading done. Good Luck if you have no other choice but to take his class. And Freshmen DONT take any of his classes ... you are not prepared!
He is very unclear about the way that he will be grading you, about the material and about what u should look for in the textbooks while studying. In my class particularly he failed a large amount of people in the first midterm. Hes just extremely unclear.
he is a very passionate teacher trying to convey to the class the subject of int. relations...upside is that he is very knowledgeable and interesting. down side is that he has a hard time staying on topic, clarity, grading, and attention.

HE was unclear on his lectures and scattered, he gives you two books reports a group project and two midterms his essays on his tests are confussing, and hard. He's nice and gives some extra credit but you have to really work for it. it's best not to take his class.

worst class i ever took. not a good teacher, tests are really hard. alot of reading, and he tests you on the readings, so you have to read it.
He requires you to read 4 BOOKS, 2 midterms (HARD), a class simulation + a 12 page report (HARD), a threat profile (6 pgs & HARD), and plus his lectures are HARD to follow (he is all over the place!) His grading policy is deciving - IF YOU WANT TO PASS AND KEEP YOUR GPA UP DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You were warned!
This Professor is soooo hard. He is so willing to help, yet his answers to your questions just get you more confused and he makes you feel stupid. His grading is dumb. WAY too hard for a 100 level class! On the first midterm I did okay on the multiple choice, but he gave me 0 points out of 24 points on the essay portion, even though I completed it! No, not half credit for it and failed me on that portion ... ZERO credit. Why? Because I wasn't specific. He didn't care that I showed I knew ehat I was talking about.
If you're reading this right now, you still have a chance. he has a specific answer that hes looking for and if you cant figure it out youre screwed on the tests. You have to read 4 books to even stand a chance. If you dont do the reading AND take time to reread you might not pass. Very few A's in the class. He sucks pretty hard-i warned you!

do not think for a second that you will do well, the highest grade was a 65, the teacher had to give us all a 35 point curve so that thewhole class didnt fail, we all had F's until he curved...get off the computer and finmd another teacher, do yourself a favor and learn from our mistakes! he is crazy.
NO JOKE, HE IS HARD! He expects alot from you. He assigns 4-5 heavy books & you MUST read very single one just to have the slightest hope of passing his class. VERY HARD GRADER! If you care about you GPA then TAKE SOMEONE ELS! In my class EVERYONE was failing up to the FINAL!!
I had Dr. Steiner for 5 courses 220, 371, 489, 600, & 697. You have to work for your grade but it's worth it. Students who want an easy grade - take Martinez (join MUN). If you want to go on to a PhD, take Steiner. He cares about your success if you talk to him, which most students refuse to do.
Hard teacher, he doesn't look directly at you and the entire course is hellish. Even if you read all the material, go to all the classes that doesn't mean you'll get a C let alone an A. He does give some extra credit but most likely he'll give 5 out of 10 points for it. NEVER TAKE HIM IF YOU VALUE YOUR ACADEMIC CAREER AND SANITY!
His lectures are the lesson. If you listen, you will learn a great deal from him that is not in the books. This is a course about the process that has the greatest impact on our lives. So it's a hard class, quit whining, you're in college now.

I am genuinely surprised that this man has a job. His reputation on this site is identical to his reputation on campus for the most part, especially in the advisement department. He seems totally unaware that 100 level classes are introductions. He provides no rubrics, no criteria, but proceeds to tear apart every assignment that gets submitted.
This was the worst class I have attended at Long BEach, possibly my entire college career. He seems to be passionate about the subject but fails horribly at teaching it. His grading scale makes you think its possible to do well, but then you realize the grading scale is structured so that some actually pass the class. DONT DO IT! U WILL FAIL!

Great professor! If you want to LEARN and go on to grad/law school then he will prepare you. If you lazy and want an easy A for doing nothing then do not take this class. If you go to class and do the readings then you will EARN an A. This class is a challenge, but anything worth having in life takes work.

Although I really appricated his style of teaching it was not appropriate for an Intro class. If it were un upper level class awesome - but it wasn't and he kicked my ass. This professor forces his students to purchase 5 course items, 3 of those are expensive text books with opposing views on the same issue. However, despite all the reading you will need to do, due to his horrible lecture style, in the end it will all be useless because his fragmented political opinion is the only thing that really counts.

If you are dorming, do NOT buy NY Times! It does NOT deliver to dorms. For a GE, it felt more like an upper division class. Lectures are pointless to go to as half the time I felt like he was just repeating the text. Grades strictly. As long as you read however you should learn a thing or to about politics.
DO NOT TAKE STEINER! His teaching style and lectures are unclear (I can't stress this enough!), his tests are poorly structured and unpredictable, yet largely impacting on your grade. To top it off, he requires that you purchase 3 expensive books and a NY Times subscription. YOU WILL NOT LIKE HIM, YOU WILL HAVE A HARD TIME.
Please Please Please do not take this class with this professor because you will not be successful because the professor does not give you the tools to do so. For your own benefit try to find another professor or wait until the next semester, it is worth it. Steiner has an extremely skewed outlook on the way a lower division class should be run.

Large part of the grade are the three tests. Study guides make no sense and are very lengthy. A lot of work to try and get a C in the class.
This class will make you miserable. Everything that was said before is completely accurate. You can try reading, highlighting, and taking your notes, and still may not pass. Gave half credit on the essay portion of a test because I was supposed to have more knowledge on the subject than what was provided. Don't waste your time taking this class.
"Intro" to International Relations it is NOT. It's a tough class, and the professor expects students to have a complete handle on concepts and material, which is not possible at this level. His grading policy is totally subjective and is unfair. His expectations are never clear. Otherwise, he's a smart guy in a fun and challenging class.
His expectations for a 100 class-level are just too high. Grading and test questions are so subjective! Reading requirement everyday, couple of reports, difficult tests... He knows his stuff, throws some funny comments once in a while, and can be a little understanding, but he just doesn't teach well! Avoid this professor.

If you take his class, get ready to leave frustrated and extremely dazed and confused. There are major discrepancies between what he expects from students regarding content on tests and in papers, and how he grades. Most of his lectures were hour and a half long tangents that didn't help with the course content. Left the class bitterly.
Never take his class! I went to class every day, did all of the assignments, and studies for HOURS on his tests... Still got a C. And he curves the whole class 10%. Half of his test questions are vague and do not make sense. His lectures are even worse. He rambles about nonsense and won't understand you if you ask a simple question.

His class was very difficult.i got a 48% on my first test..59% on my second..scored very low on the book reports HOWEVER he lets you redo book reports and a test grade. i did that.im not sure what i got on them but i ended up getting a B in the class and YES i was very surprised.i was expecting a D so i think going to his office hours DID help out
Last political science teacher anyone should even consider. If If this was the last class available and the only one I needed to graduate I would wait another semester. I can't believe this guy has a teaching credential.

I looked him up on this site and thought he can't be that bad. I was WRONG. Even if you do the readings, it's not enough because his daily quizzes are so vague, along with the midterms. I took this guy my first semester of college and he is hard. Theres readyings every day. Theres two midterms one final and two book reports. I failed both midterms, I did bad on the first book report, got a good grade on the second one who know what i got on the final.At the end i got a B on the class. Quiz daily get it right and its xtra credit.
for a 100 class it was pretty hard... mandatory attendance and reading assignments, 2 midterms 1 final, 2 bk reports, study guides provided, a simulation, everyday quizs(bonus point)... this IS NOT an easy class watsoever... he can't grade at all... answers questions with another question and puts you down when your asking for help... Find a different professor ...more then likely you will end up dropping it ...There were over 30 students enrolled in the beginning of the semester and I think were down to about 14 now... He teaches you nothing I know the same amount as I did the first day walking into the class...
He is very demanding when it comes to work. He really does treat us like upper division students and expects you to know as much as he knows. I wouldn't take his class again if I had to.
He is a very annoying professor, he constantly asks the students questions that they do not know and he probably gets a kick out of it. There are 2 midterms and a final, you will do terribly on everything and somehow end up with a B or C. He reads these ratings to the class at the beginning of the semester and says he will change....he doesn't.
First off, this teacher is very bad. If you ask him a question, he goes in circles and when he wants you to answer an essay question, the instructions would make it seem easy but once you get it back, there are tons of red marks and a 25/50 on the top. In other words, he makes things harder than they should be.
Political Science is a serious subject. It makes me sad that some students do not appreciate the high quality of instruction provided by this professor and go to efforts to scribble meaningless nonsense about it. Dr. Stiener is organized, respectful, prepared, intelligent, and with it. I am super grateful for the opportunity to learn from him.
Tough. He is not an easy grader either, but participation and attendance help A LOT. With my work, I expected a D, yet I managed to get a B (I have no idea how i got that grade).
Did not enjoy this class. He did not grade fairly. There were plenty of times where I disagreed with my grade so I'd ask him about it, and he'd be unable to back his reasoning for it. I did every extra credit, miraculously bounced from a D to an A. Hard class, but doable. Don't recommend.
The material he does present in class during lecture is pretty clear, but he expects you to completely understand the readings AND read in between the lines. Sometimes when he asked students questions it seemed like he was expecting us to fail. He also interrupts you even if you have the right answer. I got an A, but I worked very hard.
Let me just sum it up for you...If you care about education and your sanity, don't take this class. Otherwise sit back and fail in life because you will.
whatever you do, DO NOT take this teacher. There was never a moment in the semester that I was not stressing about my grade. A 76% was the highest grade on a exam. Prof. Steiner is the WORST teacher I had in my life. I am now a successful attorney with 20 years experience, law review, worked for judges etc. back in 1985 Prof. Steiner told me in office hours that I had no business being in a University and that my writing was incomprehensible. I attended 5 colleges and he is my only horrible teacher. AVOID!
Steiner is a really hard professor. But you can do it. Just read the book and due extra credit I passed with a c but its because his grading is different in his classroom. He knows his stuff just that he is really demanding. Just do your homework like a college kid suppose to do.

This is the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are extremely confusing, I could never tell when he was ending a topic and going onto another. The "book report" he assigns is a JOKE! He told us that there was no way we could fail since the answers were going to be based on our opinions. He still gave me a D on the assignment. AVOID!!
He LOVES putting students down and making them feel stupid. At the end of the semester no one would participate and he would wonder why. BECAUSE he always has be right and only his opinion matters. To be honest, for a person who has no passion for history and very little interests in governmental affairs, this class was not as difficult as the previous reviewers had described it to be. Professor Steiner is incredibly intelligent and I do enjoy his method of teaching! just do the assignment and pay attention in lecture and you'll do fine!
Steiner is an extremely difficult grader, you have to be on top of all of your assigned readings prior to class or else you might as well not attend. he expects all students to understand the readings to the deepest level possible. His exams are crazy hard. hardly anyone gets a B or better. Only recommend to students who TRULY love politics.
Professor Steiner knows what he is talking about when he teaches, you just have to do the assigned readings or you'll be lost as to what he's talking about. He does meet with each student to discuss grade improvement and techniques to help you pass his class. However, the course is still difficult. The exams are tricky and he assigns seats.
you only need 400/500pts total for the class to get an A, which is NOT AT ALL difficult if you take good notes since the test is based on lecture. he makes it less boring by calling on students in class. the quizzes are based on important pts of assigned reading. Worst professor I have ever had. He is very rude and dies not work well with you. Terrible book that doesn't make sense will get assigned and he will spend most lecture time on this book. Attendance matters, so don't skip the class. I would advise to not take this class, but if you have to make sure you read the book and try not to fall asleep

I failed the midterm and the final and got a C on the two book reports and came out of the class with a B, not sure how the grading worked that out but whatever, go to his office hours and pretend you're interested and you'll pass, that's what I did and I don't know anything about political science after taking the class.

If you are taking Intro to U.S. Government for a grade, do not take this class. He really cares about what he is teaching, very passionate and I respect that. However, if you find yourself not really caring too much about politics and just want that C, go somewhere else.
I thought I was prepared for the worst but I was wrong. This professor bored me out every class and I'm pretty sure others as well. His lectures are very boring and there's no clear way to take note on what he's saying. The only note you'll get is the reading you do on your own and it is A LOT of reading.
Terrible. Im not one to write anything poor about teachers, but this needs to be said. He does not make his class interesting at all and grades EXTREMELY tough. A class that should be very straight forward is made difficult because Steiner cannot connect with his students and excepts answer that only agree with his perspective.
tough but honestly learned so much from this MAN. randomly knows a lot of facts about frogs and ran for mayor multiple times, lost by 1 vote. runs water parks, eats well. good guy, better teacher
This class is quite possibly the worst one you will ever take. If you want to sit and listen to someone rant about few things that will be on the test, then by all means you do you. But if you enjoy passing and don't like to sit through BS "lectures" then yeah don't recommend. His standards rely solely on his own political views and answers he has in his head that he will not stray from no matter how close you may be to his answer, it's still wrong. Class average so far has been a solid 60%. Power points do not exist. Brief lecture outlines do but they're useless.
Hands down the worst class I have ever been a part of.
PLEASE avoid if you can. He requires FOUR textbooks for his class alone. He is a RELENTLESS grader. If you do not share the same views as him, you will get a low score. If you do not use The New York Times for the essay portion, you will will fail that portion. I still took his class after reading these reviews, and I regret it. PLEASE avoid.
I'm graduating this semester and reflecting on all the classes I have taken. This one is the absolute worst. This class is harder than most of my 400 level classes which is ridiculous, because this is suppose to be a 100 level introductory course. He assigns an immense amount of reading and indulges in incredibly dry lectures. AVOID AT ALL COST.
He is a nice person when you talk to him one on one, but his class is really a mess. His lectures are so boring and so hard to follow because he doesn't use powerpoint nor does he really follow his outline. If you don't read the book you're screwed. Really would not recommend if poly sci isn't an interest of yours.
He's tough. Very tough. Prof. Steiner is exactly how I had imagined a college professor back in high school. An old man with just his knowledge and a writing board. He lectures for the whole class so you really need to pay attention to what he says. Don't miss class and do the readings and you should pass. Class taught me to work hard for an A.
