Has class notes and exam study guides on the web. If you use these and go to class you should earn an "A" with ease. Reading assignments not too difficult either.
You can really tell he loves Philosophy, and that energy rubs off on his students. He knows his stuff and I agree with the other comments posted...it is an easy A...solely because his teaching style, humor and knowledge make class memorable. He is always helpful, and NEVER condescending! RECOMMENDED
easily the best teacher that i have had in college. takes a roller coaster subject and helps you understand what he is talking about or what he wants you to know. relates content to media, current issues, movies, etc. great sense of humor, openminded. got b's in both classes. excellent ph.d.

Very funny, easy test and quizzed. Show up to class and pay attention and pretty much guarateeded an A in the class.
Had 'im for ethics, religion, intro, and history of ancient philosophy. Excellent teacher.
If he is still doing it, then I suggest that you take his ancient PHI class. He is one of the most engaging professors I have ever had. If you don't have fun in his class, then I suspect you are a simple dolt!
His Intro to Philosophy Class has changed my life for the better. I asked another great teacher to recommend a Philosophy Instructor and she asked me if I wanted an easy class, or a great class. I replied the latter and she gave me Dr. Barry Vaughn's name.
With sad regret I did not have a chance to finish this class, but Professer Vaughn was and still is by far, the best teacher I have had in my entire education.
Barry is a sexy sexy man!!!
I'm a physics major, and we butted heads because one day he told me "physicists are confused" and that real knowledge is in philosophy. This took place one day while we were sitting in engineered chairs in an engineered building trying to talk about things the human mind will never, ever be able to grasp. Good guy, though. And sexy.
If you want to learn Philosophy, take this class. He is not that easy but if you study, you can get an A. Just make sure to do well on the first two or three tests so you don't have to take the final. It is VERY important to show up for class for pop up quizzes and lecture in general. Great class, learned so much.
Best instructor at MCC. His Ancient Philosophy class is far better then the one at ASU, take them both if your really interested. Vaughn's approach is more historical while ASU's tends to see it as almost a evolution of thought rather then focusing on the ancient philosophy itself. Vaughn is the best instructor at MCC - no doubt about it.
Dr. Vaughan's lectures are highly informative, enjoyable, humorous and entertaining. This really helps with comprehension of the reading material. He obviously has very carefully and thoughtfully planned the course curriculum. His excellent web site has numerous resources, including invaluable class notes and study guides. A+
i wasn't interested at all in philosophy- but he made it easy and interesting and i left still not very interested, but my perspective has opened up. he's just a cool guy- very knowledgeable in all areas
The best teacher ever! The reason i took his class instead of any other professors class is because i check ratemyprofessor.com and saw that he was an amazing teacher. He really is! His class is life changing. PHI 101 will change your outlook on life for the better. Best class and teacher you can ever take!!!!
extreamly well organized. awsome teacher.
barry is very engaging and keeps his lectures interesting, he relates it to the students and seems to be an intellectual, however i am confused and disappointed with my B score on the first exam, i dowloaded the study guide and all the class notes although nobody got an A in the class, i believe that Barry's tests are tricky and u have to read the q
he is such a good teacher!!! he explains things very well. beore attending his calss i had no CLUE what philosophy even was but after talking to him i'm very interested. philosophy is confusing stuff and he is very well at helping you through your difficulties. He's al all around NICE guy!! i would strongly recomend him.
Barry is extremely sexy and he keeps his lectures interesting. Most of his students love him. Its an easy A if you make the effort to understand the notes and study the guides. His website is the best tool.
This man is a genius. It doesnt matter if you are an atheist or religious or other, you will be challenged and encouraged to think and learn. He knows everything about philosophy and history. He does a very good job of tying together the whole history of conciousness and thought. Incredible class discussion. His class is life changing. Take it.
I was an immature 14 year old kid when I took this class. Now I am a somewhat more mature 18 year old kid. I took a rat to his class on the first day. That aside, we had many an existential discussion. I was brilliant but still a little kid, and he never made me feel bad for my immaturity. He doesn't like the French horn.
This subject in general is kind of a tough thing but Barry is truly a brilliant man! He really knows what he is teaching and really gets into it. Good class just pay close close attention, lots of details and lots to learn.
If you have the chance to take History of Ancient Greek Philosophy with Dr. Vaughan, do so! Good comprehensive look at philosophical, political, and military history of Greece. It's interesting to see the three juxtaposed together at certain times in history.
He was hilarious!
Barry is by far my favorite teacher. I was told PHI would be boring but he is EXTREMELY entertaining, this was the only class that I have ever actively participated in. There are quite a few reading assignments but they're not that long. Tests are not super easy but as long as you study and TAKE NOTES in class, you'll be fine.
Impossible to fall asleep in his class. Fun lectures and he is easy on the eyes.
Taking a class with Barry is less like being lectured by a teacher and more like sitting with a guy you meet at a bar and chatting about philosophy - just the way the greats like Socrates did their best thinking. I'm very picky about my teachers and he lived up to and beyond my expectations.
He was a really good professor. Study for the tests and get him to pre-grade your papers and you will get a good grade. He really knows his stuff and as a bonus HE IS FUNNY.
He was a great professor. His lectures were entertaining, made me want to come to class. His teaching style also made the information very digestable.
This instructor is super smart...He is funny too and he seems like he really enjoys teaching. Warning though: If you are a religious person, namely a Christian, be prepared to take a beating. Don't take it personally, its just part of the subject matter. This class is all about morality,so God and/or gods are frequently picked on.
Dr. Barry Vaughan was a really cool professor. His lectures made sense and he was really funny which kept me listening. The only bad thing is that the study guides aren't very helpful, the tests are very challenging. Overall, if you're willing to put in extra effort, this class is great. Barry really makes it what it is though, he's great.
Professor Vaughan is a wonderful scholar; It is a sincere pleasure to hear the man lecture. If you are taking a philosophy class at MCC, do not waste your money by taking it from any other professor.
He has high expectations from his students, but he does whatever it takes to help you meet them. His lectures and demonstrations are very concise and engaging, he provides very clear notes to accompany his lessons, and he works with you until you understand. Uses class time to the fullest, excellent teacher. Liked him so much I took him twice.
A truly intelligent man, some of the best lectures I have sat through at MCC.Study guides are very helpful, it is a college study guide,he'll tell you what you need to study, by JUST reading the study guide you will not do well. Be in class, there are pop quizzes, 5 points for just writing your name. Also very easy on the eyes and the brain. Meow.
SUPERB. Dr. Vaughan is truly what you would call an intelligent man. He doesn't just know about PHI, he knows a lot about EVERYTHING. PHY, CHM, HIS, you name it. Awesome to talk to, flexible on attendance and grading. Offers extra credit on every exam, plus he drops your lowest exam. It's hard not to get an "A" in his class plus it's interesting.
Great teacher. Very smart and loves to teach.! I would recommend taking him. Pop quizzes, but they are based off of your notes so if you study your notes its an easy A
Dr. Vaughan has got to be the best Professor at MCC. He actually makes Philosophy interesting-something I thought was impossible! His lectures are enjoyable-I think it would be impossible to fall asleep in his class. And as long as you listen in class and use your study guides-you should ace the class.
Dr. Vaughan was awesome. He's hilarious and always kept the class interesting. Peppers an unusual amount of references to cartoons in his lectures but to me that was a plus. I'm considering taking one of his higher level classes when I can. Definitely recommend him for 101.
Great teacher. Very animated! He's interested in your ideas and wants to discuss what ever you have to say. MAKE FLASHCARDS with the exam study guides. The tests are pretty difficult so pay attention!
difficult tests.... sometimes he is hard to understand. wouldnt recommend it... study guides were practically useless. take notes, write down everything he says... hes tricky... not cool
After taking Barry for PHI101, I knew I wanted to take his class again. He has a wonderful sense of humor and will make you laugh. The tests and material itself are hard, and most of the time it gets kind of boring, but overall he's an amazing teacher and I would recommend him for PHI101 and PHI105
He's a very interesting individual, you won't regret taking his class. The class itself is fairly easy if you're there to take the notes. There's no paper or debate, just notes and tests. The study guide is somewhat useful, but you should study from your notes, as half of the test is not on the study guide. Take his class, you won't regret it!
He's really fun! He loves what he teaches and you can tell. Lectures are good. Homework is rare and easy. The subject itself may seem overwhelming at first but the way he teaches makes it easy to understand. There are a couple of essays you need to write, but they're really cut and dry. Usually 3-5 pages but not hard to put together.
Hands down my favorite professor. He has a great method of teaching, loves to explain and helps you get it, as long as you ask questions; very balanced presentation as well; barely any homework; lets you drop lowest test score, so if you get A's you don't need the final, or you can recover from a bad early test; study up though, tests can be hard
Fun class with the percect amount of learning
Very interesting professor. Well educated and knows his stuff. He does like to give pop quizzes so make sure you get to class on time or you miss it. Lectures are interactive and grab your attention. He is tough and makes you work for your grade but at the end of the semester you actually end up liking philosophy much more.
Would have preferred debatespapers over his long lecturesexams. He's very smart and an amazing, passionate lecturer, but I didn't like his teaching style. Loves pop quizzes which is unfortunate for those who do well on exams but don't have time to study before EVERY class. If you hate papers and prefer taking notes, you'd probably enjoy him.
I get that he is a funny guy and what not but Rate my professor mislead me! This teacher is freaking tough! I haven't worked so hard for a stupid credit in my life! ugh. I attended all classes and had over 150 notecards.. Lectures are long and consist of him talking and slideshows. No assignments. No activities.I learned but i regret taking this.
Most definiatly reccomed Dr. Vaughan. Such a well rounded professor and love his lectures! There were 10 easy (if you were in class) pop quizes and then 4 exams + the final. That was it. If you're in class and pay attention, he gives you all the answers you need for the tests. Easy A and a great professor!
Awesome, charismatic professor. The guy really pulls you into the classroom. He has 10 random pop quizzes so skipping class isn't a smart idea. Tests are fairly easy if you study. (I would have 20 minutes before class, and would look over the previous notes before each class started.)
Prof. Vaughan is funny. But aside from that: his lectures would often become off-track, we were given a pop-quiz on material we hasn't yet learned, and tests are not straight forward. There are 10 pop-quizzes and 4 test for the entire semester, you're allowed to drop your lowest test score; tests and quizzes are the only way to accrue points.
Great professor! Lecture type method of teaching, if theres something you're not quite understanding don't be scared to ask him to explain further. He does a very good job of helping to bring you to an understanding. I enjoyed coming to his classes, defiantly a very knowledgable man. Interactive w the class & encourages sharing your thoughts
Barry is the man, loves his job and his students. very respectful and class was very easy. All you have to do is show up and listen to him. He even has notes online so incase you forgot something or didnt want to take notes he has them for you! very funny and makes the class fun. Honestly if you love phiosophy this will be an easy A
Vaughan is a pretty cool guy. He makes jokes in class, and the topics are made more interesting. He gives a lot of pop quizzes so it would be unwise to skip class but participation is not mandatory. His tests aren't that bad if you've paid attention and studied but there's plenty of extra credit as well. My grade: Mostly Harmless.
Dr. Vaughan was a great professor! I learned a lot from him, and I enjoyed the class. He was funny, and made the class fairly enjoyable. Although, forewarning to anyone who is religious, the concept of God and religion is often picked on. It's tough, but it is just a part of the subject matter. Other than that, great class. I would take him again.
Best teacher I've ever had. If you actually want to LEARN, take this teacher.
Very animated and passionate about philosophy. Could use more knowledge on philosophy practiced before or other than Western philosophy to see where many ideas originated, but learned a lot in his class nonetheless.
I'm a philosophy major, and he makes me glad I am. Very informative, plenty of resources. Well respected, and is always there to help you. Honestly, if you care about actually learning, he is the teacher for you. You're going to have to try. Not an easy A, but getting one felt like I truly earned it. I hope to be half the philosophy teacher he is.
Barry is an awesome guy you can tell he is really into the class and really knows what he is talking about. Every class is just lecture and he gives 10 pop quizzes throughout the semester. Tests were simple if you do the study guide and take notes in class- all the information is there. No chances for extra credit
Dr. Barry is a great professor. It is definitely not an easy A by any means. But when I got it I felt as though I earned it. if you follow his instructions such as MAKE FLASH CARDS. The class is not as hard. Do not be fooled by the fact that he has pre-written notes on website. Not all info on the notes! DUH take good notes during class!!!!!!
Barry is a great guy who is very open about his opinions. He makes lectures interesting. 10 pop quizes and 3 or 4 test are the only grades so attendance and studying is mandatory.
He's quite an excellent professor with the personality to match it. He's the most passionate teacher I've ever had about a subject. My own problem is how his teaching tends to be very bias, democratic, and religious. Other than that, it's not a big deal. Bias probably gives him so much passion to his subject, but he also teaches the Religion class.
He is the best instructor I have ever had at MCC. He goes over the material in an engaging way. He offers you a FREE textbook for the class and provides good foot notes. He also gives pop quizzes, but he auto mainly gives you half credit just for doing the. He also gives the best lectures and I would just love to hear him go on for hours and hours
Dr. Vaughan is a professional who cares about his subject, and his students. He respects your time, and you will want to respect his. His teaching method engages students to DO philosophy, not just memorize. He will challenge all beliefs, regardless of student's emotional biases, because that's what we do in philosophy. Take all of his classes.
Great lecturer! Very engaging. Will make you think and question everything. Excellent background on the intro to philosophy. Enjoy the class. Oh yes.. the dreaded pop quizzes seemed to happen all the time. So be prepared at every lecture.
Dr Vaughan is a genuinely brilliant professor. Had no philosophy background but I'm so glad i went for it. He not only makes all of his lectures so enthusiastic and entertaining, but is also very thorough on the information needed to be successful in the class. Lots of pop quizzes but if you pay attention and come to class you'll do fine
Absolutely fantastic teacher. He delivers compelling and inspiring lectures that really peaked my interest in philosophy. I was not looking forward to having to take Philosophy, but Dr. Vaughn presented the material in such a way that was interesting, very engaging, and fun that I couldn't help but to simply enjoy everything. Tough, but worth it.
I enjoyed Dr. Vaughan as a person. Granted the class I took was Philosophy 101, but it was so hard. He does not use Canvas which makes keeping track of your grade difficult, and he only requires readings, no homework. I feel in a class with content that difficult you should be regularly giving out homework. 5/10
His lectures are informative, inspirational, and occasionally hilarious. This class isn't an easy A, but the professor makes you WANT to earn it. Also, he isn't as strict when it comes to attendance, but if you miss class, you miss tons of info that will be used on pop quizzes and exams. I would definitely recommend taking his class, he's amazing.
By far the best professor I have taken at MCC. He has an incredibly deep knowledge of Philosophy and religion, and was always giving thorough and engaging lectures. He was always willing to talk to me after class about anything I had questions on, and always left me wanting to know more.
Great professor, he has a talent for teaching philosophy in an entertaining, understandable way. I was worried about whether I'd enjoy a philosophy course and it ended up by far my favorite class of the semester. Keep up with readings and take good notes; as long as you study and ask questions if you need clarification, you should be fine.
By far one of the best lectures. He is very knowledgeable and makes his class fun and entertaining. It is a difficult class and you have to work hard because there is only a few things that get grades.
As someone who had zero interest in philosophy before starting this class, I am grateful to be have had Dr. Vaughan. He was inspiring and made me WANT to learn philosophy. The lectures were entertaining as much as they were genuinely interesting. I enjoyed the professor so much I retook him for PHI103, Logic!
Dr Vaughan is an excellent instructor. Highly knowledgeable, and an effective communicator. Lectures are entertaining, and class participation always welcome. This class was a very positive experience for me. Attendance is not mandatory, but your grade will suffer if you do not attend. Lots of possibilities for extra credit on quizzes and tests
Barry Vaughan is a great philosophy professor. His lectures are very engaging and they keep you interested. There is no homework in although you pretty much have to attend each class to hear his lectures if you want to pass. He has all his notes/readings/textbooks on his site which is very generous of him. Overall I loved his teaching style.
Great Teacher
He is one of the nicest professors out there, not to mention he dresses incredible nice every day! Super funny & he likes to talk a lot! A lot of information for the tests are him talking, so beware of that. Even if you don't enjoy philosophy, you'd like his class. Lots of pop quizzes, so come to class because you cant make them up! Tests are hard.
He is a great professor. Although classes are all lectures I found him very enjoyable to listen to. He makes you interested in philosophy. Show up because if not you will miss lots of info or the random pop quizzes. Tests can be hard but do the study guides off of his website and go over notes and you will be fine. Take him!!
Very knowledgeable and explains the content well. Keeps you engaged in the class and one of the few lecture classes I didn't want to fall asleep in.
DR. VAUGHAN IS AMAZING! The first exam for PHI103 is difficult, but the other exams are DEFINITELY easier. There are a few homework assignments and a couple of major papers, but there are extra credit opportunities for IN CLASS ONLY. He is very intelligent and will answer emails and questions and makes class fun!
Barry Vaughan is the best professor!! He makes his classes very engaging and is very knowledgeable about his subject. He takes time to explain the material to students and has a great sense of humor! I would 100% recommend taking his class.
I LOVED his class! It's lecture heavy with powerpoints but he's very engaging and makes it fun to learn. He offered a lot of extra credit opportunities and has a good sense of humor. I'm definitely planning on taking more of his classes.
Awesome Professor! SUPER passionate about Philosophy. Incredibly knowledgeable. Great sense of humor. Heavy lectures, but I found all of them really interesting and thought provoking. As long as you study for the exams and show up to class (he's a fan of pop quizzes) you'll do fine. I would highly recommend taking this course to anyone.
The class is kinda tough, but make sure you take good notes otherwise you wont pass. If youre attentive during lectures, the exams will be easy. Also, the pop quizzes do add up! So make sure youre always up to date with his lectures!
Prof. Vaughan gives very captivating lectures peppered with lots of humor to keep the existential dread associated with some of the topics from creeping in. There are lots of terms/names to memorize which proved to be a tad difficult but overall it has been an excellent/engaging class.
Dr. Vaughan is awesome; he loves what he does. He has 10 pt pop quizzes but +5 pts for being there on quiz day. His website has outlines for ALL of his lectures, PRINT THEM OUT AND USE THEM! If you print those, COME TO CLASS & review for tests should be able to pass. If you do those things, plus pay attention & take good notes you will succeed!
Really great teacher, amazing lectures too. The only complaint I have is he gets really off topic, we were supposed have 3 tests besides the final, but we only had two. That's a whole unit of stuff we did not get to cover. Lots of quizzes but if you pay attention you will pass.
Dr Vaughan is easily the best professor I've had in my life. His lectures are hilarious and expressive. The class is graded with 10 pop quizzes and 4 exams. The quizzes are typically information you covered the previous day and are easy after reviewing notes . The exams have great study guides and he drops your lowest exam score. Great class.
There is nothing wrong with Professor Vaughan, its just that his class is super hard. If you think you are going to get an A in the class you are not. You have to do a lot of studying and knowing the most detailed answer there is to the questions
Dr Vaughan is the bees knees. Very intelligent but a true man of philosophy as he is very open-minded. He is one of the best instructors i have seen at answering students questions, i don't know how else to put it. (its ok to ask dumb questions) Grading is clear, several tests and some pop quizzes. Notes/study guides all online. Highly recommend.
Dr. Vaughan is one of the coolest most inspirational professors I have ever come into contact with. I wish I could take more of his classes, but they are not in my major.
This is a great class if you really want to learn the criteria. He gives so many examples. In my opinion, it was hard for me to keep up because the lectures are long and I couldn't stop spacing out, Maybe it was just me though. He took the time to really help me out in-office hours. The book is used mainly for HW. Easy class once you get the rhythm
He teaches like he's discussing it with people who already know the material, very hard to follow, the notes have no information just a couple words, every lecture was the exact same about unicorns & his can of soda water it was the worst class Ive ever taken I didn't learn a single thing he always went 5 mins over while my next class was starting
Dr. Vaughan inspired me to study philosophy! He genuinely loves the subject and loves teaching it so his classes are amazing. By far the best professor I've ever had. He is professional but also personal and is great at connecting with his students. I felt I could reach out to him for help when needed and always be met with a satisfying response.
No help no lectures only textbook reading. Online tests contained errors (misspellings in answer keys) marked wrong for correct answers - score not changed even w/ email. Subjective grader. Awarded differently for same quality work based on demographics. Extra credit mandatory but selectively converted to extra points for only some students. RUDE
Dr. Vaughan 's PHI101 class was the best class I've ever taken at MCC. The class was equal parts philosophy and history which was wonderful. Dr. Vaughan's lectures and supplementary videos were fascinating and relatively easy to follow even when discussing complex subjects. Finally, there were more than enough extra credit opportunities!
The practice problems he gives are nothing like those he quizzes you on. I am not a fan of the way he grades, its either his way or the highway.
Prof Vaughn is really a delight, very funny, although perhaps a bit scatterbrained and long-winded at times. We didn't end up finishing his full curriculum despite having an extra week in the semester. He's clearly very passionate about Philosophy though, and it shows. However, not sure I would've had as easy of a time in this class in person, tbh.
I loved taking this class. Barry is an amazing teacher and explains things in a way that makes you think but also understand. He drops your lowest exam grade at the end of the semester. Would definitely take another class by him!! He is very funny and able to relate with the younger generation.
Great Professor that makes his students feel welcome and not afraid to ask for help
This guy is awesome. Highly recommended
This teacher, and his lectures, literally taught me how to think. MANY years later, I'm still grateful for the knowledge he has passed onto to me. The best teacher I have had in college.
Good teacher, just has trouble staying on track sometimes.
I found that his class was harder than I thought even though the class is mainly quizzes and tests. He can go on for a while at times and, as an example, I've seen him talk for about 30 minutes on a particular subject relating to the material that he knows about. He's very passionate about the subject and overall I loved the class, would recommend!
Encourages questions, well thought out lectures, great online resources that allow you to catch up if you need it. Great guy would highly recommend taking him.
Amazing Lectures really cared about students and their opinions and made everything material-wise accessible and free.
Dr. Vaughan is a true philosopher, and he is very passionate about the subject. He owns his website for supporting your classes. Also, he cares every student, and he would be happy to discuss your philosophical and ethical questions with you. His classes are amazing, strongly recommend!
He was pretty great because he has no attendance policy so I skipped almost the entire semester. I was able to do that because ALL the resources you need are available for free on his website. Though for the lectures I did attend, he is very passionate when he speaks. Very entertaining and easy to understand.
Took online summer course. It was easier than I thought would be. You do an assignment or two a day. Can get by with watching his videos, but having textbook helps. The extra credit really did help me with my grade. Grade is based on accumulated points rather than a percent out of total points
what can I say other than just a great teacher?
Very communicative, and his material is very clear, thorough, and well-organized. Quizzes are tough but he always goes through and reviews them manually, too, so don't fret too badly if you submit and Canvas says you only got a 2/10. My biggest complaint is that the examples he uses in his videos can be quite strange and distracting
Dr. Vaughan is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Currently taking his logic class, not because I need it for my degree, just because I love his teaching style. He makes the material so interesting. Lectures are engaging because he really knows what he is talking about and is so passionate about it as well. Cannot recommend him enough.
he talks like everyone was born knowing all philosophical terms. very hard to follow. all he did was go on for an hour about if the chair is really a chair if our eyes percieve it. what a load of balony. he always went over the class time so i was always late. quite a snoozefest. 0/10 would not take again even if i was paid to do it
Professor Vaughan's lectures are engaging and insightful. While the course can be challenging, using Unstuck ai and the free online resources made it manageable. Definitely worth taking, especially for the thought-provoking discussions.
I just finished taking his introduction to logic class and I enjoyed it a lot! He knows his stuff well and is very passionate about helping his students understand the material. Funny guy who all around loves what he does. I would highly recommend Barry Vaughan class if you need to take an philosophy classes! 10/10
His lectures are fun if you try to participate and he will stay after class to talk to you. He is also good about working with you if you need to miss class.
chill, funny, & knowledgeable. his website is a good resource, but the study guides are only 90% accurate to the actual exams. some test questions can be hard, but most are easy. talks at length at times. watching his videos is sometimes required, which are only kinda relevant to tests. during lectures, gives good extra info not included on slides
