Way too hard for an intro class! the tests dont represent the notes al all!! dont take!!!!!
the class was extreamly boreing, because he puts all the notes on his website and he is a monatone brit. All the quizzes are extra credit and offeres even more extra credit throughout semester...so keeping a good grade is fairly easy, but be careful because the tests are pretty extensive.
He is sooo boring, but unfortunately you actually have to go to class. He gives you all the notes online but doesnt put the things that are going to be on the tests in the notes, you actually have to go to class for that part. Its easy to get a good grade though becuase there is an infinite amount of extra credit.
fun class show up AS much as possible
Good instructor. British accent that he forces himself to maintain. He knows the material and is willing to help students, but he'll also let you hang yourself if you don't ask for help. Ig-Met is not an easy class, but he tells you everything you need to know. Doesn't involve himself with the lab. If you're a geologist, he's the only guy for 3223.
gives lots of bonus point opportunities
he is super easy we don't use a book and there are extra credit assignments left and right. this is a class you really don't have to worry about
Volcanoes and Earthquakes has no textbooks, and lots of extra credit, that you will no doubt have many oportunities to make up even if you don't get done by the due date. The tests, however are almost non-passable without attending class...learned the hard way. Would be an easy class with a little more effort than I afforded it.
Great prof, very helpful and friendly. Really easy class if you actually show up and pay attention. TONS of easy extra credit assignments. Got a 70 on a test, the extra credit bumped it to an 87. I had some legit personal issues come up during the sem, he was very understanding and helpful. Overall hes awesome and the class is easy and interesting
No textbook which bothers me b/c I learn mainly off textbooks. But he's very understanding and there are so many bonus points that you shouldn't worry too much. However you have to study and go to class to pass the test.
Dr. Weaver is one of the best profs I've ever had. He's easy to listen to in lecture. He's very clear and understandable. He keeps my interest and is even quite funny. He saves you $ by not making you buy a textbook. You don't even need one for this class because his notes are so awesome. The tests are multiple choice, and very reasonable.
No textbook, but if you attend the lectures and take notes you will be fine. The tests can be hard and require studying but there is so much extra credit that a bad test score won't affect your grade too much.
Dr. Weaver is a terrible teacher. His tests are very hard and have very little to do with what we learn in class. He goes out of his way to be unhelpful and takes pleasure in giving bad grades to people. Hard to get a hold of, and will repeatedly ignore students' emails about important topics. Overall, worst teacher I have ever taken.
Weaver is a terrible teacher for Ig Met. He delights in watching his students do poorly. He is almost impossible to get a hold of and the class requires that you go on a week long field trip during spring break. The tests are very hard and not related to the notes. Worst of all he has a British accent and the book is basically worthless.
Easily one of the most organized classes I've ever had. I took his online volcanoes and earthquakes class. No textbook. Tests are difficult, but he offers a lot of bonus opportunities which makes a huge difference. I wasn't interested in the material but he made it entertaining with videos, etc. Do the bonus, study the outlines, and you'll be fine.
If possible, take the intersession- It's easier than the actual class. The exam isn't cumulative and it's an open book test. Hard to do bad if you do all of the bonus opportunities. They really help. I made 2 B's, a C, & an A on the 4 tests, but with the bonus points he offers my overall average was a 97%.
I would say avoid him at all costs, but unfortunately he is the only professor for the course. He gives little feedback, takes too long to grade exams, grading system is abstract, and constructive criticism does not exist. Your grade essentially depends on a paper covering some aspect of his research.
This class was really interesting and I hate science!
This class is hard. Try to write down all his power points and use outside sources to understand the material. His topics are hard to grasp. Start working on the long paper ASAP and work hard on it. You will not pass if you don't do well on it (30% of grade). Tests are very hard. Email him and try his office hours as he is a bit more helpful there.
TAKE THIS CLASS. DO IT. PLENTY of extra credit, tests are okay, but if you put the work into it, you'll be fine. Truly a great class.
Extra credit is the name of the game. It's a straight 1 hr 15 min lecture every class, which gets old fast. There are 4 exams, 100 points/exam, and you can make 78 points in EC if you attend every class + complete the bonus exercises. No other grades, so the exams matter. Material is very interesting; Weaver is a sassy British man. Would take again
Although there is a lot of bonus (and by that I mean a lot, almost too much), the tests are extremely difficult. A ton of information to cover on your own during this online class.
I took this class during the winter break as an intersession course. Easy. He gives extra credits
The tests are extremely hard you have to know every detail about every volcano and earthquake that he has ever talked about for tests if you don't you will not pass. If you go into ask for help he will talk to you like your beneath him and will not help you whatsoever. The study guides are long and don't have everything on them.
Funny and nice guy but the tests are over the most specific parts of the notes or over extra reading that must be done outside of class. You HAVE to be in class and do extra credit to pass. You HAVE to study really hard to pass. I would skip this class if you're not a geology major.
Best professor I've ever had. This class was easy enough with a little work and there was so much extra credit. Barry Weaver is definitely in the upper echelon of professors ever.
Brings his personal and religious beliefs to class. No clear direction on what to study, bad at replying to email's. Grading system is complex and unclear. Hardest class I've taken and im an engineer with chinese being my second language. Dont take his class.
I beg of you not to take this class unless you are super interested in every tiny aspect of volcanoes and earthquakes. I just dropped the class due to the extreme amount of time expected of you. It's only a 3 credit course, but you're expected to do a lot more work than that. There is not a book, just his confusing and wordy notes.
Barry weaver is an awesome teacher. He gives SO much extra credit. However, he uses i-clickers so attendance is mandatory. Tests are hard, but if you can get old test files you should easily make an A or B. Highly recommend taking his course.
I did the spring intercession class. The amount of extra credit is nice, but his tests are crazy hard. He gives you the notes you need, but they're really hard and boring to read (5+ articles/6 days a week plus hour long videos you have to quiz over). He's also really bad at emailing back and has not updated his course in 4+ years.
Class is simple, the notes are provided for you online and in class. Grades are 100% based on exams with plenty of opportunity for bonus points. But simplicity does not mean easy. His lectures can get drawn out and dull, and his tests are extremely brutal. This was harder than some of my engineering classes.
Worst online class of my life.
I took this class because I thought it would be an easy gen ed, but I was so wrong! He seems like a nice guy and is passionate about the subject, but the class is hard. There's a lot of information to know and the tests are very difficult. It is very hard to get an A or B in this class. Even with extra credit he offered, I struggled & had to drop.
I have taken online classes before, but this one nearly beat me. Lots of reading. Lots of tests. This one is not for the lazy student for sure. The professor was accessible and helpful. But, as an experienced student, I can attest; this 8-week online course was a killer!
I took this class as a science credit; my advice is to just take severe and unusual weather instead. While Professor Weaver was very organized, clear in what he expected from students, and knowledgeable about the subject, the tests were impossible and the lectures dull. If you take this class, do all the bonus activities and you'll end up fine.
Barry Weaver got me using a dictionary to decipher his emails
This dude makes you read more than you could imagine. Sure there's a bunch of extra credit opportunities but its pretty much impossible to get full credit for them. Bonus quizzes are very difficult and you better prepare to spend most of your week studying in advance for his tests. Do not take his course at all costs.
This may be the worst class I've taken at OU. Terrible professor. This is a 1000 level course and the amount of material you have to know makes it seem like a 4000 level course. NOBODY TAKE HIS CLASS. You will learn nothing. Terrible teacher and shouldnt be at this University.
This class was very interesting and I learned a lot, but it was a very hard class. DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT, because it will help your grade substantially at the end of semester. It is manageable to get an A if you use old quiz-lets and his online notes. Just prepare a week ahead for tests. He is a great guy, and is very passionate ab this class.
he goes through lectures so fast its impossible to take notes. by the end of the semester I gave up on taking notes in class and just used the online notes and google for the test study guides. go to class and do all the bonus activities because it could bring your grade up significantly at the end of the semester. not as easy as your advisor says
I personally love Professor Weaver's course! I had taken it as an online intercession course and while there is a lot of material, it was super fun and interesting to read. Professor Weaver likes to hide little jokes and fun facts and throughout the material if you pay attention and always has useful aids to help learn it. Do all the extra credit!!
I am a senior taking this class as my LAST gen ed credit and it is way harder than it should be for no reason. I have never studied harder for a gen ed science class and I still fail most of the tests. There is no reason for a volcanoes and earthquakes class to be acting up like this. The only good thing is that he offers a lot of extra credit.
I thought this Gen Ed course would be easy. It was not only the hardest Gen Ed course I have ever taken, but it was also one of the hardest courses I've taken at OU. The Tests are ridiculously hard and just getting a B on one feels like you aced it. There are much easier Geology courses to take other than this one. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE!!!
This class is all self-paced online with the notes posted on a website twice a week. There are bonus activities throughout the course that is disguised as "bonus" but are pretty much mandatory. The first to third tests are easily passable but the final was so difficult. The questions on the exams make no sense with the notes. Not an easy A
This was the hardest class Ive ever taken. I took it over Christmas break. Interesting but only 3 exams + final for grades. I made a 54 & 48 on the first two exams after studying & doing the study guide. I had to withdraw. There is extra credit which is pretty easy but there was no way I was passing. He seems nice but Id avoid this class!
I initially took the class thinking it would be another standard intersession course and to my chagrin, I embarked on the literal most difficult college course that I have taken thus far. He compiles endless amounts of disorganized pages of painfully specific information. It truly feels like torture to study for the exams. NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS!
This class is tough! This is a hard class because there is soooo much material that I could not remember all of it. There are a lot of bonus points and if you don't do those, you probably won't pass. There is too much information to remember for the exams. I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you really love volcanoes and earthquakes.
As a senior who needs this class to graduate, I've taken upper division level courses that were much easier than this. Tests are less general knowledge of the subject and more so over the tiny details within notes. Some questions were also worded very poorly. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. It will be the only way you ensure you will pass this course.
I did the full online version of this class. He doesn't respond to my emails, but maybe I am asking dumb questions. He posts notes on a website for you. Everything other than tests is extra credit. So you don't have to do anything technically, but you should. The tests are very hard and he randomly decides to proctor people so watch out for that.
Barry weaver is the worst teacher at OU. I would recommend changing your major to avoid this course before taking it with him. He seems to take pride in having a class average of %30 and saying his student are pathetic. Save yourself. Dont take anything with Barry weaver.
Avoid at all costs, and beware of good reviews for lower-level classes. He treats his students as enemies and will work against you - rare office hours, no providing resources, insulting classes, diabolical (non)curves. He reflects poorly not only on himself but on the entire department because of how little support they've shown their students.
Barry is by far the worst professor I've ever had. If you are a geology student you can avoid him and he makes it his life mission to make you regret every life decision you have made to end up in his class as a geology major at OU. He delights in your failures. Avoid him at all costs if possible.
Horrible professor is an understatement. When 3/4 of the class fails, he blames everyone but himself. Insults students if they ask questions. Lab is difficult and he expects you to already know everything. If you like stress, anxiety, being insulted, and poor grades Barry Weaver is your professor. Don't take him regardless of the class.
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY EVEN ON ZOOM AND IF U DONT HAVE GOOD ATTENDANCE YOUR GRADE SUCKS. and also you have "bonus" but there is literally 1 million of those assignments and they count for a grade so not technically bonus, oh and don't worry there's no study guides or anything and the test are ridiculously hard. But, he may be a very nice man idk
Do not take this class. Worst class I've ever taken. I was more stressed about doing well in this class then my actual major classes. It seems like it would be an easy class because there is no graded assignments there is only 4 test then bonus assignments, but it is not. Test are extremely hard, didn't learn anything. Not as easy as it sounds!
This class is 65% Exams but 30% is a final term paper that Barry gives no information for and is around 35 pages long. It is due Friday of dead week (That's when the lab final for the class is as well!). If you like getting physically sick with stress from a class, I would recommend IgMet with Weaver. Mediocre professor for how harsh grades are.
He regularly fails around half class and several students withdrawal/drop every year. This year he decided mid-semester to release a grading scale where he didn't give anyone an A but failed over half the class. This class is a GPA crusher! You may want to raise your GPA with other classes when you take it. #RIP
This class was very hard and loaded with a ton of information. The tests are very hard and the questions are very specific. If you don't do all of the extra credit you will regret it. Do all of it and attend most of the classes and you will get around 4-6 bonus points to your final grade. My section for the spring semester of 2021 82+% an A
Barry is a simple man. You are graded by very few things and he gives almost no information on how to do well on those things. Beware of the tests, as they are very challenging. You must go to class and MUST do well on term paper to pass this course. He offers little to no bonus for 3223 usually, so beware of this when studying for the class. 0/10
Taking a course from Weaver is a very unpleasant experience. He is very generous with his extra credit, but this does little to cover the ridiculous difficulty of his exams. Exam questions are often pulled from extra credit and sometimes stem from personal opinions. He is very opinionated and rude. Gen eds are never such a chore. Avoid this prof!
This guy makes the hardest tests known to man. He mentions tiny details in his lectures and will make entire sections over these seemingly minute details. He gives plenty of extra credit, but for some reason, only allows it to affect up to 10% of your grade, so up to a certain point it's useless. Almost everyone fails the tests, so good luck :)
Worst class I've ever had. 90% of your grade comes from the exams and only 10% from the assignments. With Weavers exams the questions are of the most minute details and are long-winded, so you barely have enough time to read the question , you have to have an eidetic memory just to pass the exam and you would be happy just to get a C on an exam!
Don't expect to pass if you don't go to class, seriously. 75% of what will be on his tests are mentioned in lecture. If you go to class, do the extra credit, and actually try to study for the exams, you can pass this class for sure. Tests are brutal but plenty of extra credit is given.
Barry is the definition of an over-hated professor. His tests are brutal, but if you go to class, you should make at least a C because he generously curves everything. Barry loves to put specific, in class details about the material into his tests. If he mentions something as being important, expect to see it multiple times on the exam.
One of the worst learning experiences I have ever had. Material that appears on the exams are sometimes never taught, and his lectures are just info dumps, nothing beyond trying to actually LEARN THE MATERIAL. Avoid this professor like the plague. Our test average was a 44% in case you need the proof.
He is the worst professor that I've ever had. The test reviews are nothing like the test and don't help at all. The only things that counts for a grade are those exams and everything else is extra credit. Even if you do all of the extra credit, your grade can only go up 10%. Our class average for one exam was a 44%, they are ridiculously hard.
Barry is by far the worst professor I have ever had, yes I did poorly in the class but he has 0 leeway for grades and homework assignments. And his test are hard to study for if you try using his trash websites study guides. If you get sick or for some reason miss assignment or class I recommend just dropping. His extra credit barley does anything.
Just unenroll if you are in this class in the future. Waste of time, learn absolutely nothing and homework is a joke (it also only effects 10% of your overall grade). Exams are impossible to get perfect score from his random questions that he never went over to opinion based questions. Its just a GPA killer with a professor that doesnt care.
exams are 100% of your grade in this class and the class median for each exam was between 40% and 50%. This means that easily over half of the class completely fails the course. do not take this course if you care about school.
I am not exaggerating when I say this is the worst professor at OU. Makes his tests extremely hard and sends out emails every semester shaming studentgs when everyone not surprisingly fails his exams. He has to curve the tests so much to keep his job. Extremely opinionated and rants about evolution in GEOLOGY. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Weaver has been the least caring professor that I've taken so far at OU. The only grades In-class are the exams and "extra credit". The extra credit is basically inaccessible with every assignment having absolutely no direction of what is expected. This with below-average test scores goes to show how little effort is put into educating this class.
Tests are 100% of the grade and the extra credit essentially becomes mandatory. This class is a 1000 level course though it is not treated like one. Students get stuck in this class as freshman and get their gpa crushed early on so do whatever you can to get out before you're stuck. Getting a good grade in this class just isn't worth your time.
Barry would most likely be a good person outside of a course. But if you are taking a course with him, either drop it now or be ready to not meet your expectations. The course is 100% based on exam grades, which you are proctored, and can't have notes. If you want to do good, do all the bonuses, but still, then, expect a low grade. Drop It.
Extremely test heavy. Offers lots of extra credit assignments but they don't do much. Would avoid taking this class if you can.
If you're anything like me your advisor recommended this class and you didn't check RMP until it was already too late. There are a million reasons listed in other reviews on why you shouldn't take Weaver's classes but Do every piece of extra credit available, study the practice tests hard, hope for a good curve, and bet on the final it's easier
Dr. Weaver really enjoys teaching and his online class was very interesting. Personally, I made sure to attend all office hours and ask my questions then. Although exams are your entire grade if you do the extra credit it helps a lot and it helps you learn the content. Overall Dr. Weaver was a great professor and I enjoyed this winter class a lot.
He was great! I attended office hours and if you are taking his online class I recommend doing that too because he is super helpful. He emails a lot and makes sure everyone is informed and he's a super nice guy. Do the extra credit it helps a lot! Overall he's a great professor and is super passionate ab his class. I would recommend this class.
Great professor. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!
I was so nervous about taking this class bc of the awful RMP reviews. The class was really not that bad. Quizlet will be your best friend! For a winter class, it was not time-consuming. You have 4 exams that are 100% of the grade. BUT you have about 15% of extra credit opportunities so do the extra credit!!
You could do everything the rubric says to the best of your ability, get the assignment proofread by someone, and still receive a C on it. Not even a high C, a low to middle C. I had to argue with him about my grades on assignments multiple times and he wouldn't change my grades for NO reason at all. A very unfair professor. Not understanding.
I would not recommend taking this class. IT IS HARD (especially online). However, I have nothing against the professor, he is super nice if you go and talk to him with your concerns. But the class is just hard to follow. DON'T RECOMMEND, but if you have to take him, make sure you go into his office hours with questions.
I cant stress this enough but Barry is just the best. I loved his winter class. I learned so much and it was so fun. I got like a 97 and honestly if you just study a little and do the extra credit you will do well. I always would go on his zoom office hours and he was so helpful!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
I took his winter class and loved it! Make sure you keep up with your work and if you have questions all you have to do is go on his office hours and he will help. If you use your resources you will do well in the class. I got a high A.
drunk on power. not nice. material makes no sense. if you don't know anything about geology before going into this class, don't bother.
Content and required criteria for his assignments are very different from the criteria that he actually grades them on. When asking for clarification, is unwilling and passive aggressive. He adds notes in our text kind of forcing his political and personal opinions that are completely unrelated to the course, which makes me slightly uncomfortable.
