Stat Mech's a nightmare, and Barth made it a whole bunch more enjoyable...
Barth is a genius..and one sexy guy
a little too smart to bring material to students' level. hilarious though
He's hilarious. Without him, stat mech is a total distastor.
coolest guy ever
Very very very funny, but course material is not always clearly presented
he should be an enternainer, not a prof. even though he is married, he reeks of

Way too smart for teaching. Nice guy, incredibly funny, should be working on the next world-changing theory, not teaching undergrads.
He's cool.. really down to earth.
This guy's the man - not really cut out for teaching survey courses, but he seems to have fun with it. You rock the heavens, Barth.
Great sense of humor and super smart. Interesting lectures and provides great examples of his own work in astronomy. The next Hubble?
Happy Thursday!

Something tells me most of these posts are by Netterfield himself. HE SUCKS AS A PROF. Yeah sure he's all enthusiastic and all, but how does that help me get MARKS when his tests and problems are ridiculously difficult???
He has the most annoying voice in the world. He's enthusiastic, which is good for him, but it ends there. His voice sounds like a shrieking mouse, especially when he yells into the microphone.

hes really sweet and you can tell how much he loves his subject....but at the same time he doesnt really explain things that well and he talks really fast...plus the TA's are SO disorganised and rude! his assignments are really hard although the weekly quizzes make it easy to pull up your grade

He is AWESOME!! He's the most loveable nerd ever. He is super funny, smart, and really makes an effort to explain things to make sure we all get it. His exams are easy, I was expecting and studied for much more challenging questions. He made the class super enjoyable.
OK prof, but not great. Didn't take control of the class - there was always a constant hum of students taking in the room, which was distracting. Didn't explain complex theories well - wasn't until RayJay took over lectures that I actually started getting it! Super nice dude though, and seemingly passionate about his work :)
Such a good prof - and a great course
Explains everything nice and clear, easy on arts students. LOVED the course. But be sure to show up on the lectures and tutorials, saves you a lot time to read. Test and exam are basically coming from the ppt slides and some of them are from the clicker quizs.
Made me enjoy astronomy. I took it because I needed a credit but I would absolutely take another course if him and Dr. Reid teach it. Lectures were easy to follow and he made the content understandable. I absolutely recommend everyone takes this!
His lectures were really fun. Everything was easy except the final exam. Good way for artscies to get BR5
he is a nice teacher
Netterfield is a cutie! So passionate about what he teaches, it's really great. There are clicker quizzes in both lecture and tutorial, so best not to miss class often, but lowest 2 quizzes are dropped. There are weekly assignments online, but if you listen in class they aren't a problem. Was a bird course but I'd take another class w/ Netterfield!
I had professor Gansler for AST101 which is actually taught by two profs. Out of the two he is definitely better, his clicker questions are easier and often times more related to course matter. He is also far more approachable either in office hours or after class.
If you're considering taking AST101 (and you seriously should be) with Prof. Netterfield, you'll like it alot. He explains concepts well, has an upbeat personality, tries to keep the class from being dead and was really passionate about teaching.
Prof. Netterfield is my favourtite lecturer I've ever had at U of T. He's so genuinely kind and caring about his students, it's an honour to be in his class. He comes off as a little frazzled at times, but overall he's clear and easy to understand. Very funny!
Very clear and content is easy to understand
The only class where I looked forward to attending. The content was interesting and he delivered it in an upbeat style. You can tell he really loves what he's doing. Definitely would take again.
Prof Netterfield is one of the best professors Ive had so far in my first year of university! Hes so incredibly kind and easy-going, and during office hours, he gives off the aura that he genuinely cares for his students. His lectures are very upbeat and fun, filled with numerous easy clicker questions for an easy A.
Very easy going and generally happy guy. Tries to teach in an upbeat manner. Material is not hard at all. Sometimes he is a bit unorganized. Wierdly I found he was better in AST101 than in AST201, but nonetheless is very passionate. I dont know anything about science, but he makes it easy to follow
glad that there's such a passionate prof in astronomy... please take this over 210
He's very passionate about astronomy and will help nudge everyone in the right direction when the class isn't getting at least a 90% on clicker quizzes. Easy assignments and straight forward tests, would definitely recommend this class to everyone!!!
Excellent professor, very helpful, friendly and approachable. He cares about his students and does his best to make sure everyone's on the same page and the material he goes over is very well explained. Would love to take him again if I had the chance.
Prof Netterfield is an absolute gem. He is so passionate about astronomy and it's adorable how excited he gets - you can tell he wants you to learn. His lectures aren't too tricky to understand, and overall enjoyable. Most of the material is really cool. I would recommend referring to the textbook if you're struggling, though. But overall great!
Dr. Netterfield was so adorably enthusiastic when giving lectures. He may speak a bit fast, but he also makes sure everyone leaves class with a clear understanding of the material.
The best professor I have had at UofT so far. So so intelligent, makes coming to class such a joy. Such an inspiration, especially if you look into his work outside of teaching.
Pretty nice prof and pretty easy course. He's enthusiastic and teaches concepts well. Textbooks not necessary to succeed.
He tries really hard to make things clear and relatable to the class, and I think is a wonderful teacher!
Netterfield is an enthusiastic and engaging lecturer. Although this course includes multiple small, online assignments, if you simply complete them and attend lecture/tutorial, you're pretty much guaranteed an A.
I took AST101 to fill a breadth requirement and I thought I'd have to drag myself through the course, but this guy was just so passionate about astronomy that I was actually interested. He knows we're all just there for the credit and goes the extra mile to make sure it's still fun and understandable
He's so passionate about his work! He makes such complex content so simple to understand. His lectures are amazing and produced and delivered so well, he's definitely one of the best profs at UofT.
hes super passionate and makes lectures fun hes like bill nye with his video editing
A PROF MAKING E-LEARNING ALIVE. Appealing content and amazing videos
Professor Netterfield is a passionate and caring individual, who tries his best to make the lectures as entertaining as possible. Very quick in responding to any feedback and eagerly adopts it.
One of the easiest courses I've taken in UofT. Definitely recommend to anyone who has extra credits to spare and wants to boost their GPA. Text book is not necessary at all, the prof explains everything you need to know in lectures. Answer for quizzes can be found online as well, so easy marks. Be sure to make friends in class for in class quizzes.
Amazing lecture indeed, made every lecture interesting for students. Students can learn it while listening (I took fewer notes during his class). Test concepts in lectures but as long as you pay attention, you will do well. He really loves his job and loves astronomy. Would recommend it for elective!
Produced some of the best async lectures I have ever seen. Made quizzes reasonable and didn't try to mow us down with work. Absolutely amazing professor!
Made some of the best asynchronous lectures I've seen! You can tell he put an insane amount of effort into editing and creating his videos. He was also just genuinely so happy to talk about astronomy and his enthusiasm was contagious.
Super fun class.
really good and funny professor
Professor Netterfield was a brilliant professor. He made some of the best asynchronous classes i've ever attended, he was engaging and did his best to ensure he was clear and understandable when explaining tricky topics. would highly recommend taking his class
I was super impressed by the quality of the lectures! You can tell that Prof Netterfield is super passionate about the subject, it made me want to learn! It was such a great experience in this course, honestly, it's a bird course. As long as you prepare and keep consistent with the async material, grades will be just fine!
He is actually the most enthusiastic and charismatic professor I have had so far and makes me excited to go to a class i would otherwise hate attending.
Lectures are quick, usually finish 10-20 minutes early. Tests are very easy. He is funny and entertaining to listen to. Questionable views on COVID though.
He is awesome and likes what he teaches
Very knowledgeable and funny professor. His lectures were always very nice to watch. I would recommend anyone take his courses.
A very kind, caring, and funny prof. You can tell he loves teaching and knows how to teach complex astronomical topics in very fun and simple ways! He is my favourite prof and made me so interested in astronomy. I loved every bit of this course with him and did not want it to end because of how fun he made it to learn astronomy. BEST PROF EVER! :)
He made me so happy about taking an Astro course :) I had just picked AST201 for my breadth but I was NOT expecting it to become my favourite course and get me interested in astronomy so much to the point where I spend my free time reading about astronomy. He is also so kind and funny you can tell he loves teaching :) This man changed my life
The biggest nerd ever in the best way. Funny during lectures and takes the time to make skits with himself about the topics. An interesting/knowledgeable speaker who engages with all 1500 students. Took the course for my breadth requirement, I never thought I would find interest in the subject but he changed my mind. This man changed my life.
- Very funny - Very caring - Theres a reason why everyone claps every lecture - The GOAT
Prof Netterfield is the most incredible professor! He was very kind, and his sweet, approachable, humble nature made classes so enjoyable. I will miss his lectures very much, he made the subject matter interesting. You'll be fine if you pay attention during class, he explains things in a very comprehensible fashion. Thanks for everything professor!
He was great but the other professor was awful. His lectures were funny and engaging!
Very responsive professor, super helpful and nice during office hours, 100% recommended!
Extremely nice and humour full person. His lectures are always fun and easily understandable. I especially liked his interactive videos in which he explains various phenomenons on earth. I would extremely recommend him if you want to get a 90 with a good laugh during your lectures.
Great Prof, engaging lectures and not to difficult material
funny and makes students engaged with the material. you can tell he's really passionate about course content. also he RENDERS his own 3D models of space to demonstrate concepts which is awesome
the goat fr
Amazing professor. Loved going to lectures but he has online clicker questions so unless you were in class its kinda hard to do them. He always makes lectures engaging and records them and puts them online. Theres weekly quizzes that are kinda hard but ngl none of those questions showed up on the final so it was ok. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
LOVE him. My goat, my king, my glorious Netterfield... Even though people say AST101 wasn't a bird course, head my word, because it was. When I say I gave minimal effort, I mean it. I can credit Barth Netterfield for my unsuspected A. His passion for the course material makes even the most disinterested students enjoy the class.
A fantastic prof. Entertaining and hilarious, plus he explained complex concepts in a super clear way. As a humanities student in an astronomy class, he was so helpful and genuinely cared about his students. The whole class gave him applause after our last lecture with him.
Great prof!
Most funny prof, and the tests are very easy, only based on lectures and no readings
I know lots about space now :)
One of the best profs at UofT!!!
he's silly and fun to listen to during lectures, especially when he talks to himself on the screen.
great and passionate professor! he talks a bit fast though so make sure you can write/type quickly. the tests aren't too bad, but sometimes focus on crazy obscure things that were only mentioned once 6 weeks ago lol. pretty fun class, though.
Da goat. Nuff said.
An absolutely astonishing professor. Deserving of any and all praises that should come his way.
Da Goat. Nuff Said
Da Goat. Nuff Said!
AST101 is not a bird course. However, Netterfield's lectures are amazing. In fact, they felt like episodes of a TV show instead of lectures. He's funny, uses videos to illustrate concepts and you can tell he's enthusiastic about what he does. One of my favorite U of T profs and there's a reason Con Hall was never empty with him.
Very straightforward class taught by an equally amazing professor.
Passionate teaching, reasonable grading, light but inspirational lectures, enthusiastic online videos, I would fully respect such professor and his research. The applaud and queue after each class have already justify my views.
infectious enthusiasm. one of a kind
If you can get past his near constant complaining for lack of attendance & people doing the in class clicker quizzes at home, you will be met with performative lectures where he flies through course content and expects you to know it all. Also forget any kind of assistance from the incompetent TA's.
His lectures are great and you can tell he's really passionate about the course material. His teaching style is also very engaging and his video discussion things where he's talking to himself are really educational and funny. Also weighs exams to give us the best grade possible in the course and to avoid bad grades because of bad test days.
Oh, Barth, how I will miss you. I took AST 101 with this king, and he is the reason for my new astronomy obsession. His lectures were amazing; he loves his wife and makes it obvious by incorporating her into his lectures. I'm devastated to be basically done with this class. We love you dearly, Barth!!!!!!!!!!!
Genuinely one of the best profs I've had in this uni he's always so excited to teach and passionate about the subject. Most lectures are posted on YouTube and the content is pretty straightforward and interesting, would recommend taking the course!
Barth Netterfield is a great prof but AST101 is not a bird course. no study guides and makes the exams much harder than the lecture content but lectures are fun and engaging. Do not take this as an elective tho
Phenomenal course for anyone of any level of interest. 100% a bird course given that 'bird' courses are not ones you can just sit around and do nothing. As long as you stay on track with the content and understand the logic rather than memorizing facts, you will have a great time in this class.
bird course for sure, he's quite passionate. only complaint i have is that he like trips up on his words a lot and says a completely different planet than he means, but he is an amazing prof
The midterm are different from lecture but not very hard, the final is extremely hard but he curved a lot, overall, a nice prof!
