Really hot!
What a bad professor. He went really fast in his presentations during lecture. We could never get the notes off PowerPoint.

Easiest class I ever took @ KU... and it's very interesting.
In response to previous post, he will back up on his overheads if you ask. Notes aren't as important as reading. Interesting guy. Entirely possible to make an A just by attending lecture and discussions regularly without putting forth any extra effort.
Cake class if you show up.
Very easy if you go. This was the honors section, so more essay on the tests. Expect at least a B.
Amazing lectures! Does not even use a microphone in Budig 120. Speaks clearly and enthusiastically about subject! Gets your attention with his engaging lectures. Must do soem reading for this class, but worthwhile.
really, really hot...like Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones movies hot
Charismatic. He pointed out that he looks like Prof Utonium from the Powerpuff Girls and he admits he's a loud mouth. He's funny & good. He seems to like photography & music. plays music before every lecture.
pretty easy class
Very interesting lectures, very loud mouth, very passionate about the URANINA
Bart displays an uncanny ability to always appear in extremely tasteful pants. I'm not sure if he is rich, but the quality of his styling products is undeniable.
Rather easy class, but a worthwhile learning experience of areas not often touched on outside of anthropology.
superb class--great prof
Best class I have taken at KU. Amazing lectures, never boring and he is very passionate about anthropology. He is a sight for sore eyes...wow!
Give that man 2 peppers he's smokin hot and funny too (for a professor). His lectures are great...simple and to the point. Bottom line, if you want to take an easy class where you can just come and listen and get an A, then Dean's your man!
Dean is the****- he is so passionate about anthropolgy and has made me consider taking more classes. His lectures are awesome and his tests are a breeze. The TAs are awesome too!
Bart is sooo hot! Take his class if you can!
Bart Dean appeared to be helpful, but missed every single appointment I made to meet with him. He also lost my papers and blamed that on me. He is very cocky and has no need to be. He relies on jokes about drugs and alcohol to keep the class interesting--it didn't work.
Unlike the comment posted below about Prof. Dean, I found his course wonderful. 5 stars for WOW! What an eye-opener...andwe need this in our bigoted state. The neo-Con. student clearly missed the point of discussing "drugs", not to mention that prof. Dean does not teach Anth 161! If you want to think out side of the box, take Dean's class.

I took 360 instead of 160 (the difference being a 5 pg paper and 1 pg essay on each test), never went to lecture after two weeks, did the paper the night before and got a B. Easy enough class depending on the TA you get (DON'T get Robinson) and it's a nice, cushy way to get some Junior/Senior hours while fulfilling that Non-Western requirement.
I had him for ANTH 106 and another upper level class. I love Bart Dean and will take any class I can offered by him. He is very easy and very personable. He is a little cocky and pretty messy and unorganized but thats just him. Many of his classes are discussion based so don't take it if you don't like talking about articles and books.

Super hot, great personality, never skipped a class. He's so interesting to watch and I love the fact that you can come down at the beginning of each class and speak your mind about any topic. Everyone should take his class to be a more well rounded person and understand that there is more to the world than the US. Great TAs. I loved Nancy. She's really good and very helpful.
super dude...he knows his stuff and he ain{t afraid to tell it like it is!
So interesting...so hot...so smart. opens your eyes to new things and gives you the chance to be heard

professor dean is the best professor I had while at ku, he is as passionate as they come. Sorry I graduated before taking more of his classes.
Best teacher I have had at KU, he keeps class fun and interesting, and lets you learn without just reading... great class, great teacher.
I'd say don't take this class, there are much cooler non western civ classes. He interrupts students when they try to "speak out," he spends more time finding cool pictures for his slides than creating a cohesive lecture, the TA's don't even grade the hw, so really you have no idea what is going on.
I am in his class right now and I love how he keeps it interesting and fun. If you need jr/sr hours take the 360 option instead of the 160-(the only difference is that the 360 students write an 8-10 pg paper). Excellent choice for the non-western credit!
This class rocks
He's a great guy! As a teacher, however, not so much
No Comments
He emphasizes opinions rather than reality. Tests and expectations for the class are rather blurry. Overall he seems like a good guy but his teaching abilities need work to be successful
superb, easy and insightful, made me think, highly recommend Dean's clas

lectures interesting, grading fair aNd i learned alot about a field I never knew about. I like know to take more anthroplogy classses
this class is the bomb, not too difficult and covers topics rarely discussed at KU, i respect the instructor's perspective, even when i disagreed with him
Class lectures interesting, discussion section was OK. Class was not difficult and I liked the interactive 'speakout' part of the course. Topics covered in lecture were diverese and my roomates and me debated all the time about our views on what we covered in class.
If you are interested in a NW civ. req., this class is great. Attendance in lectures aren't required but key if you want to get a good grade. I didn't like my TA, but the class was fun & not BORING. Mygirl friends & roomate know about anthro. & blew off the clas & still did fine. But I got my $ worth from showing up at lecture + he is a stud.
da bomb!
I really like my professor. He is the best yet, and a sweetheart as well (sexy too). Way to go KU.
Bart is the man. No matter what anyone says about his class, trust me, it's way interesting and super easy because of it. He's a really chill guy too! Even if you don't like Anthropology, you'll love this guy/the class. His TA's were really good too. I had Rachel *i can't remember her last name* but she was AWESOME. YAY BART! Easy A.
Snap, not enough lecture time with this Prof. Maybe that's why we are in red Kansas. If you like anthropology, an easy grade, and are willing to shed your egocentrism--a must take. too bad i graduate with the wrong major, try and take this before you major in something worthless. I now know about anthropology, better late than never!
I learned a lot from a great teacher of anthropology. He is a great person, someone you want to hang around and learn from. He makes going to class fun and never took himself too seriously.
The best thing to do in this cool class is takes notes in Dean's lecture, even examples he gives that aren't part of the course readings, the pace is fast & furious, you are required to go to discussion, the TA's are helpful covering the obscure material. Exams are multiple choice, but easy if you know the general point of the class.
Varieties of Human Experience rocks. Great lectures, funny Professor, and serious topicd.
The class is really easy as long as you read the book and the articles. They also throw in test questions from his lectures about his views. Do the extra credit too, so you do not have to study as hard for the final.
This class sucks. Extremely vague and i feel I haven't really learned anything. He is a smart guy, but it's hard to understand what he is trying to teach. Tests are ambiguous as well. And i am a fairly good student. Maybe if you like to read really long and dry texts then you will enjoy this class. I however; am no one of those people.
He's hot and loves what he's talking about, but seriously one of the most boring and vague classes I have ever taken. The tests come out of nowhere and have 9 page study guides. Also plan on spending hours reading if you want to do well.
This class is very poor, and it is very unorganized, if you are contemplating taking this as a gen ed. do not, it is a GPA killer.
This guy is pretty crazy and entertaining, so I guess he wasn't too bad. His lectures were sometimes pointless and jumped around a lot, a lot. It's beneficial to go to class though b/c some of the stuff of the test is word for word what he said in lecture. If you do all the readings the tests are really easy. You hardly have to study to getta A.
bART Dean is awesome, he shakes up the blah blah blah of Ku. I think its a great class
Extremely easy class! Knew a dude that didn't show up till the first test and still got a C+. Let you have "safty net" cheat sheets for the test: front, back, full page. He manages to make lectures incredibly lively yet very vague and the reading is extremely dry, but still and easy class. The T.A.s were AWESOME! Do it, DO IT!
Discussions required, but lecture isn't. It is hard to stay motivated in this class, but it is an easy A if you apply yourself a little.
Cool class!
Bart was extremely laid-back, personable, wanted his students to do well, and was very understanding that we have a life outside of his class. He let us lead the way on what we were interested in learning for the most part. He talks A LOT but he knows it and jokes about it; he's very humble. In addition, he's not at all bad to look at! :)
Very lively class, not boring at all. He's a great teacher with a passion for his research. If you are at all curious about anthropology, or even if you're not and just need Jr/Sr credits, take this class. Weekly readings were required, and not difficult at all, but were pertinent to the lecture. Plus, he's a really personable guy.
Bart was a very interesting guy. Kept the class awake and would point it out if you did get side tracked. Reading was very helpful and so was attending discussion which is now mandatory. Lecture, of course, wasn't. He talks a lot, but taking some notes did help in the end.
Dean is a baller! I only went to lecture on test days and ended up with a B in the class with little preparation. Easy class, make sure to go to the discussions and you will be fine.
Professor Dean is a great teacher. His lectures are filled with humor and attention grabbing first hand accounts of indigenous peoples. His tests are based on the "big picture," which tends to make them easy. Even if you have no interest in Anthropology, this is a great way to meet the Non-Western Gen Ed requirement.
Prof. Dean is very entertaining. His class is simple yet informative. (And he's really cute!)
randomly a really hard class because its SO BORING. bart is a cool guy but my interest level was just not there. lectures are very random and he kinda jumps all over the place. tests are somewhat difficult as well but the TA's were pretty cool
Loooooooove him! He is truly the Indiana Jones of the Anthropology Dept! I love learning from him, made me want to go to class.
Best anthropology course I have taken at KU, Dean is an amazing teacher
Blazing hot, I recommend this course to all. tests a Little hard, but now I know about anthroplogy
Da bomb! Bart Dean is the man. Great class for non-western civ. requirement. Eccentric and provocative.
Gresat nonwestern requirement course. Prof. is funny and keeps class moving. I recommend this anthroplgy class to all my girl friends.
Excellent introduction to the world of Amazonian anthropology. Professor Dean is a gifted teacher, and has made me rethink my course of studys. Why am I still studying environmental studies and not anthropology??
Sweet class
Excellent class,I am now an anthro major thanks to Bart.
Took Peoples of Amazonia (or something like that). Very interesting. He's a different sort of teacher. Very laid back, easy to talk to, understanding, etc. But! If you act like his class doesn't matter and it's obvious that you're not keeping up, he'll act like it's not a big deal and then you'll pay for it in the end. Luckily, I did the work
Anthropology of Amazonia was fantastic, it has shaped my future career trajectory. Dean knows his stuff. Highly recommended.
SUPER COOL CLASS. not hard, but kept my attention going. knew nothing about anthropology, now i do.
really excellent prof. i wasnt interested in anthro but he chose varied and interesting readings. lectures were easy to follow, he has a great personality, and was very helpful when i needed to make up a test. NEVER bother emailing him, he probably wont read it and definitely wont respond.
Excellent teacher. Cares about his students. He has real world experience in his field and has lots of great stories. The lectures are fun and educational.
What a wonderful class by a gifted teacher. Learning about the Urarina has enriched my life. Thanks to the lively lectures I have kept up with all of the reading, and the exam was fAir.
Great!
He is a really fun professor, he talks really fast though, but he makes the lectures a lot of fun and interesting.
Show up to class, pay attention and study a little for the tests and the class is really easy!
Lectures were fine, but be wary if you have him as your discussion leader. He takes forever to give back tests and doesn't use Blackboard. I will never know my grades on participation, my final paper or final exam. You learn a lot, sure, but don't take his honors discussion without expecting some headaches.
AWESOME CLASS
The model of a great teacher. Serious, yet hilarious lectures. Enjoyed Prof.s critique of the****ty nature of capitalism and the inherent humanity of indigenous societies. Remember dean hates emails, so talk to him, he was SUPER cool when I met him to discuss my thesis project in philosophy. Thumbs up^^^^^^!
Bart was awesome. He talked without the microphone and it made class exciting. The only negative is that he sometimes is bad about interrupting students when they speak.
A hilarious and eye-opening class. Bart Dean tells the real deal about anthroplogy and the world around us.
He makes lectures really ejoyable, and as long as you attend class, do the readings, and briefly review notes, tests will be fine. He really knows what he's talking about and his stories are hilarious!
Great teacher, I loved ANTHRO before, but he made it even better. Show up to class, and you'll do well.
Bart is by far one of the best professors at KU. He is extremely entertaining. I would highly recommend him to anyone!
Amazing class. Never a bore. Im gonna switch to Anthropology now thanks to this summer class. Fun and relevant.
Adored this teacher. I wonder how he would like his eggs in the morning????
This class was not a bore, I can say that, but since he was so crazy and scatterbrained sometimes, it made it hard for me to want to get up and go to class. If you read the assigned chapters, you are golden. Overall, I didn't enjoy the class, but whatever.
This guy rocks! This is one of my favorite classes I have taken so far at KU! Take it!!
Awesome class. Fast paced and chocfull of basic anthropology. Highly recommend this class, well worth it. :-)
This is a must take class: Prof. Dean gives us tones of sassafras, indigo insight and sacrosanct wisdom.
Take this class if you want to learn the basics of anthropology. Take lots of notes cause he talks super fast, but fun in lecture hall. Learned about cultural relativist And human rights topics from amazon, Africa, Rastas and the united states of America. Testing was judicious. Happy I was Last year in this fascinating introductory course
cracks me up everytime im in class! he can be all over the place, but he will really teach you things. actually go to lecture, because you can get super behind. make sure you take really good notes cause he goes fast, and read the books cause their cool! def check it out. so worth it!
My roomate told me to take this class when Bart Dean teaches it. She was not wrong. What agreat course. I am thinking about joining the Peeace Corps (Africa) thanks to Bart Dean's class. It was a real life changer!
Bart Dean is a very animated man! His lectures are always interesting, but you don't have to attend them consistently or take detailed notes to do well in the class. Great reading selections and GTAs for discussions. Highly recommend!
Dr.Dean is very engaging, interesting, and knowledgeable. His classes are interactive (he wants student input and opinions). He is by far one of the best professors I have had at KU.
One the best professors. His lectures are fun and interesting. He really knows what he's taking about. You don't need to go to lectures but I strongly recommend. Tests are not hard. Definitely take anthro 160 with him (i'm retaking the class and I enjoyed this one A LOT).
Professor's Dean's lectures were very interesting. He is a really funny guy. If you read the materials you are supposed to read and show up to your discussion you will do good on the tests which are your only grades in the class. The Discussion portion of the class is where the other half of your points come from. Overall, very laid back.
Great Class
Bart Dean is a real interesting guy. Sometimes he says the funniest/weirdest stuff, but it definitely makes the time fly by faster in class. Class wasn't incredibly hard. Test answers are basically provided via the lectures, but Dean does have a bad habit of talking too fast and moving through the slides very quickly. Overall great class though!
This guy is clearly very knowledgeable in the field of Anthropology. But, he has so much to say every lecture that it was personally very hard to follow along and ended up confusing me more. Reading the textbooks is vital, the majority of the questions on the tests were taken directly from the reading (a few random from lectures.)
Solid course. I learned a lot about a new field I did know even existed. Thinking about a minor in Anthropology now. Thanks Prof. Dean!!
Awesome & knowledgeable. Class discussion/readings are interesting, but there's no organization to the course. Lectures are all over the place and I'm often confused about what I should be learning. Little homework. Participate in class and do the readings! (He seems like he's chill about it but he'll deduct points!)
Exceptional class dicussion, inclusive environment and great lectures
Favorite professor so far, he makes classes super exciting. I would definitely suggest one of his classes. He talks a lot during lectures and sometimes it's hard to keep up.
Online lile Learning over. We befriended each other just because we have the same sounding names and I have been a fan of his page & the books he has written.I have asked him a number of questions about South Americans & the historical culture, fascinating .Bartholomew lives what he teaches and inspires non majors for life.
This guy is an amazing lecturer! He is hilarious and his TA's make class fun as well! All around this was a fantastic class. You need to make sure you read everything he gives you, although it is a lot 90 % of it is on the tests. You need to go to every lecture because this is where homework is given and MAJOR test questions come from it!
Love him! Go to lectures & discussion, take amazing notes & you won't have to read. Ask questions in discussion! You will never type faster in your entire life than in one of his lectures, but it's worth it! Find people w/ diff TA's so you can share study guides. Tests were the only sort of difficult thing about the class.Q's were too easy or hard!
I skipped this class all the time, didn't buy a text book, never did the reading and I got a high B.
Worthwhile course. I bought the texts and went to class. My grade reflects my engagement with ANTH 160. I really enjoyed the semster.
Bart is an awesome professor, and it isn't hard to pass his class. Just show up, put in a little effort, and talk in class. He doesn't use BB to update grades and just grades you based on how you did overall in the class. I don't even think he reads the assignments you turn in, he just keeps track of IF you turned it in.
One of the best classes I've ever taken! Professor Dean is an amazing teacher, and as long as you go to class and take notes on the lectures, the tests are easy to pass! The readings are helpful, but if you go to lectures they aren't really necessary.
Great teacher, hilarious and makes the course work fun!
I had Bart for my Honors seminar on Human Rights, and he always had interesting things to talk about. Great guy, very engaging, super informal and casual. He's not so heavy on lecturing; he likes to hear from students and have an open discussion.
Really engaging lectures, I skipped quite a bit but I enjoyed the class. I put in very minimal effort and came out with an A so don't sweat this class. Learned a lot and had a lot of fun listening in lecture.
He was a great professor and very nice. All you need to do is show up and you will pass. all of his exams were very easy. The lecture was interesting and fun! The discussion is where all the points are.
This class was a lot of fun. It was in a huge lecture hall so you could goof off or watch videos during, but the discussions were more personal. The instructors care a lot about the subject matter and will pretty much talk to you about anything. Keep an open mind as you learn about cultures around the world. Also, a pretty easy A.
Interrupts and talks over everyone he calls on, plus he required 5 TEXTBOOKS, two of which he wrote himself. I think it's completely unreasonable to require over $300 in purchases for one class. They weren't listed online after enrollment until a week into the class- no time to prepare financially, I couldn't buy two of them.
His lecture slides have huge paragraphs on them but he changes each slide in a minute. The lecture topics are interesting but the way he teaches it is just downright frustrating. He needs to slow down and actually explain, you also have no idea what will be on any of the tests.
He talks over everyone who talks to him, has been very unclear of the expectations with the class and grades. He doesn't have a schedule for the semester and chooses to email out the week's instructions on a week-by-week basis. He also cannot use zoom well and struggles to get lectures going, taking usually almost 10 min to share his screen.
I hated this class. Extremely disorganized. Expects us to buy 3 books and pay to peer grade eachothers hw. They don't specify that we need the online textbook to turn in hw online, so many ppl are stuck having to buy it twice since they already bought the hard copy. He talks over everyone and shows little respect.
Do NOT take this class during the pandemic. He is not a good professor electronically. just don't do it
We didn't get a comprehensive syllabus until 3/4 of the way through the semester. Instructions on assignments were never clear, we wasted money on textbooks written by Dean which we never used. The TAs were the only saving grace. Absolutely easy A+ class, but F- for mental health and wellbeing.
Professor Dean never responded to any of my emails throughout this short course. He would randomly grade assignments weeks after I submitted them but ignore any class questions I had so I had to resort to posting discussion boards about my problems. It wasnt too hard to get an A, but the lack of direction and response was completely unprofessional
I took ANTH 160 over winter break, so it was super condensed. Lots of reading, practically read the textbook cover to cover, but it was really interesting material. Professor Dean didn't really communicate with us, didn't respond to emails, and took a long time to grade things. But it wasn't really a hard class, just do the reading.
Prof. Dean has challenged the way I have imagined the Amazon. His lectures are awesome and he always encourages class participation. Well worth attending class.
Well worth taking. I knew little about Anthropology and I have now changed my academic path thanks to this eye-opening class.
I love this course. We have earned to evaluate, analyze, and in some cases, change our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions about challenging situations in the Amazon.
Classes with Bart Dean have been so worthwhile! Bart has an amazing way of breaking complex things down so that they are understandable, and always keeping it light and fun--even in a course dedicated to the study of violence.
Passionate about the subject, Prof. Dean was always prepared, knowing the material & how to communicate it in a sensible way. Thank you very much for the course. I enjoyed every minute of Bart Dean's class lectures & his marvelous sense of humor, which made the study of violence more tolerable.
I cannot even judge Dr. Dean as a lecturer since he never even lectured for the class. I took this as a winter class, and he just sets up the class where you do discussion boards, weekly papers, and chapter questions over a textbook he wrote. The syllabus has no grading criteria and his feedback is vague. He is very lenient so that is a plus.
I took ANTH online in the winter and enjoyed the material and structure of the class. With consistent work, I did well in a course that challenged my way of thinking about the importance of culture.
Great class. We learned the basics of anthropology and why is useful in the globalizing world. I have added it as a minor.
Excellent course on a very gloomy subject. Professor Dean gives informative lectures and constantly promotes student involvement. Both attendance and the final paper are significant factors in the grade.
A great introduction to the people living in the Amazon. Wonderful lectures, films, and readings were engaging. The final project is a research paper on a class topic. Highly recommended.
Even though this course covered a depressing topic, I am glad I took it. I had no idea that people could be so vicious to one another. We addressed the likelihood of atonement while covering situations from around the globe. I heartily advise enrolling in this course with Dr. BART.
Took Anth of Geno/Ethnocide. Graded on participation and a final paper (+ paper presentation + annotated biblio, free points). Class routine was informal discussion over a reading, sometimes submitting a note card with thoughts. No hard deadlines. No grade except final grade. Probably easy class if you don't skip *too* much. Interesting content
Anthropology of Ethnocide and Genocide was a great course that challenged many of my preconceptions about humanity. Having finished a final paper I am really proud of, I have direction for my Honors thesis.
Peoples and the Rainforest was a great introduction to the study of Amazonia. Worthwhile course taught by expert on the topic.
The history and cultural dynamics of genocide and ethnocide are clearly presented in the course. We analyzed cases from all across the world from an anthropological perspective. One must participate in class sessions and turn in a final term paper and bibliography. The class is highly recommended especially in today's world of mass violence.
I am really enjoying the online Anthropology of Film class. It covers new issues and ways of thinking. I like the way the course is designed. This is my first film and anthropology class, and I love the topics we are covering. It makes me "view" the world in a new way. I'm now thinking of adding anthropology as a minor.
I took an online class with Prof. Dean, and was pretty disappointed. I barely got any feedback on the weekly papers we had to write, and when I did, it was one or two words. I felt like I was going in blind every week. Also, the online formatting for the class was pretty poor. I'm sure he's a great prof in person, but don't do an online class w him
As a nontraditional student, this is my 4th online course, which I greatly enjoy. It is by far the best one I've taken at KU. Thanks to ANTH 301, I have entered the serious study of the production of ethnographic films to document and represent human cultures and behaviors. Needless to say, it's given me a new way of seeing the media-filled world.
I am having a blast in Prof. Dean's Anthropology Through Film class. It's like watching Netflix but with a twist. I get to see how different people live and think worldwide and how movies can tell their stories and struggles. It is cool to compare and contrast films from various places and styles.
The class provides a great opportunity to examine diverse cultures and perspectives using the medium of film, which I find both enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. The course involves completing brief written assignments and a weekly quiz (8 in total) based on PW lectures, short readings, and fascinating Ethnographic films.
Prof. Dean organized the course by film genres and themes, including documentaries, impressionistic, and observational films. His passion for anthropology was evident in his teaching, and I appreciated his feedback and the opportunity to interact with him during office hours via Zoom. I am excited to take more courses with him in person!
Using movies as a study medium, ANTH 301 provides a visual and immersive learning environment beyond conventional text-based instruction. Written tasks to evaluate the movies we watched weekly tests, quick reads, and recorded PowerPoint lectures. I was introduced to various cultural viewpoints, thought-provoking ideas, and ways of seeing the world.
Learned so much in Anth 160 about all these different cultures from around the world, and it's crazy how they all have their own unique stuff going on. It really makes you appreciate the beauty of diversity and how it matters right here in the USA.
In our class, we dove deep into the history and cultural aspects of genocide and ethnocide, looking at examples from around the globe through an anthropological lens. You've got to show up for discussions and submit a final term paper with a bibliography. I recommend this class, especially with all the mass violence happening these days.
ANTH 501 is a must-take for anyone interested in the anthropology of revolutions, and Prof. Dean's dedication and knowledge made it a standout course.
Professor Dean's ANTH301 class is an immersive journey through film. The visual medium and thought-provoking assignments expand my cultural understanding. unstuck study has been a helpful study tool alongside the lectures and films.
This class provides an excellent opportunity to explore global cultures through the medium of film. ANTH 301 was engaging, thought-provoking, and fun. Weekly quizzes and short writing keep you on track in the on-line format with insightful lectures, readings, and powerful ethnographic cinema.
