Basil is fantastic. He is easily my favorite professor at Saddleback. He is hilarious, and is always helpful and personable. Highly recommended!

He makes you work hard for your grade, and participation is a must, but this class is really enjoyable, it makes you think, and it's fun. Lots of quizzes, but participating and studying the material well will help you pass with flying colors.

The best Philosophy teacher at saddleback. He is really funny and clever. If you do all of the reading, the quizzes and tests couldn't be easier. People who think this class is hard are silly and just don't do the reading. If you love philosophy, or if you don't and just love to feel intelligent and well opinionated, then this class is for you.

Basil is an awesome teacher. quizzes every other week that are pretty easy if you read the books. 1 midterm 1 final 1 nine page paper at the end. philosophy is a confusing subject anyways but basil makes it fun and interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and plan on taking phil 12 with him

He's very witty and clever, regardless of what anyone says on here. The work is simple; do the reading, study the notes from the lecture, and you'll get an A. Plus he's super hot and made philosophy fun ;)

He is brilliant. He is everything I aspire to be academically. The only people who complain about him are twits. They aren't used to using their brains and so they find it to be challenging. He's pretty easy, nice guy unless you challenge his opinion. Pokes fun at peoples religions all day which can get a little disrespectful, but if you stay FOCUSED, stay on top of the READING, and don't get into arguments with him, you'll get an A.

Basil is a very good teacher. Definitely my favorite this semester. He has a good sense of humor, doesn't make you do pointless work(there is homework but you learn a lot from it). Basil is hilarious. His class is easy. The homework never took more than 30 minutes. Quizzes are online. You HAVE to study for the midterm and final though. Don't argue with him; he will win. Not a hard class, and it's fun and interesting. I recommend him!

I don't remember one case for God being raised throughout the entire semester even though Basil gives everyone an equal opportunity to voice their opinion. he is very laid back, makes jokes and gives funny and real life exampls of logic and how to use it in the wolrd today. I didnt mind going to this class, lets us out early. attendance is not mandatory, no role.Tests are short. He basically gives you the answer for tests. Take this class you'll enjoy it and its easy!

*(Honors). The class was comprised of 1 midterm & 1 final. Due each class was a journal entry from the assigned readings (very simple & short). Attendance is semi-mandatory (at least MAKE SURE he remembers your name by talking as much as possible!). I definitely recommend taking this Professor!

What a fun class that was! Out of all the teachers I?ve had throughout my life, Basil is my favorite. He?ll include you in the discussion, but if you don?t know what to say he won?t make you feel bad. Basil is funny and very passionate about philosophy.

From the minute I walked in the room, I found it easy to talk in his class because he was kind. To do well in his class, keep up with the book and be ready to discuss. Also, he doesn?t like it when people are late. If you want to do well on the exams, study well ahead of time, and focus on the notes and study guide.

Bas will really get you thinking for yourself about ideas. His class will open your eyes to incredible new ways to look at the world, exploring whether we really know anything, what is reality, what makes up our identity, is the mind separate from the body, is there a god, and the other great questions of the universe and humanity.

I currently have Bas for Philosophy 1 and also Humanities 1. As a student, you know how difficult summer semesters are! Both classes are a lot of reading BUT he really wants you to think about the material. I LOVE both classes! Highly recommend this professor!!!

He is definitely a true philosopher. And a awesome professor. The class is hardish. But he works and helps you along the way. Sit in front and make small talk with him. In the end it pays off if he likes you and if you're a hard working student, regardless of test scores. He wants everyone to get an A, and he will help you. Fav Professor by far.

Professor Smith is by far the best professor I've ever had, physical and online. He truly cares about you, and tries to push yous much as possible, if you don't do squat don't expect a good grade. This is college, no one will hold your hand. Only gripe is BB doesn't post his discussion boards on time, but he compensates for it.

Basil is a total pushover and he will push back dead lines if one person is having trouble with the online homework. He is pretty laid back however the class did not know their grades on the quizzes for the entire semester..I still don't know my scores..haha. An A is definitely doable if you study and do the homework! He has funny examples too!

AMAZING!!! :) Our homework was all done on an online website, takes long, but it's easy. In class quizzes don't count as too much of your grade, luckily. He's passionate, helpful, and funny. Easy class, got an A, I recommend him highly!

Not much work to do. He gives the assignment on Monday and you have until Sunday to turn it in through blackboard discussion board. Relatively easy. Need the book! Oh and your final is just one paper. That's it!

I took his online class. read one chapter a week(which entails about 40 pages) and you do one discussion. no tests. just one paper at the end, and if you save your discussions you basically just re write what you wrote. Got an A. great professor. responds quickly to emails. and updates grades about every week or so. the biggest thing is the reading

Bas is by far one of the sickest teachers I've had, his lectures move fast and he expects you to have the reading done (which really isn't much at all). He personalizes your learning experience in a way that no other teacher has for me. If I could not transfer and just take all of his classes I would. The class really is amazing and he is a really great instructor. I never even planned on taking philosophy and now I can honestly say it was one of my favorite subjects.

Very eccentric, very insightful, very sporadic, and very cool. This guys is what philosophy is all about, digging right in to deep and cutting conversation. Be ready to have your views questioned and dissected. He isn't the most organized, but class is NEVER boring. You can get an A fairly easily, but you get out what you put in with this guy.

When I was doing my final paper, we talked about drafts. He wrote my recommendation in a week. I'll never forget all his help. I can't recommend him more!

Smith is by far my favorite professor of all time! My advice- don't be shy! Let your opinion be heard. Lectures (or more like conversations) can be all over the place, so you do need to read your book in order to pass the tests, which aren't bad at all as long as you study what he tells you to. Basil is a very good professor. Aside from his entertaining class, he's a super funny guy. You will definitely not be bored in his lectures. You have multiple quizzes, as long as you read and know the concepts of the material you're solid. If you had to pick a teacher for philosophy, he's the one!

He was entertaining and kept students interested in the class. Most lectures were more of discussions between the class as a whole. If you're a female he may give some flirty vibes (just a fair warning). I don't know if that's just his personality or if he's flirty, but it doesn't go farther than the discussion.

I took my first philosophy class with Dr. Smith during my freshman year of college and I can say with complete conviction that Dr. Smith is still THE BEST professor I have ever had. If you want to get a real taste of the kind of brilliant teaching that is only available at ivy league schools, you will take his classes. It will change your life!

This is a pretty easy class you just have to do the summaries assigned for each class. He is kind of sporadic but funny and it makes lectures entertaining at the least. If you look through the study guides you'll get A's for the quizzes. Overall would reccomend this class

If you are taking any philosophy classes at Saddleback, take as many as you can with Dr. Smith. I spent 3 years at Saddleback, and in my opinion, he was the best professor in the school. He is brilliant, hilarious, and his classes are interesting and fun. Not heavy or too hard. The work load is not out of the ordinary or weird.

He seems to be a little crazy, but he knows a lot about philosophy and is super straight forward. You have a summary due for almost every class, but they're not difficult at all. There is only 3 quizes and a fianl resaerch paper at the end. Just pay attention to his lectures and take some notes from his powerpoints.

If you do the reading, then show up to class and participate, you can expect an A. Basil makes sure that you are ready for his quizzes, something I was quite worried of at first.

Other than assigned readings to help you better understand material prior to lecture, there are quizzes and a debate. Basil is a great professor. Really knows philosophy and is funny! Grade based on 2 tests, take home essay quizzes and a group debate at end of semester. Tests can be hard, but his study guides help! I learned a lot from this class and deep discussions that BAS tried always to make in the class just make the concepts pretty clear BAS is ready to answer your questions in many different ways till he ensures that you got the right idea about the philosophical topics BAS you made the hard topics doable you are a real human and Doctor I love BAS

I love this instructor the class is tough but the way he structured the class made it doable I could not imagine that i will be able to handle the hard readings but BAS was always there to clear things up and direct my readings the best professor in Saddleback and the world

Prof S. gives good feedback 2 papers, but slow grader which makes it tough to know what ur grade is in the class. I got all A's , so I wasn't worried, but if I was on the line b/w grades that would bother me. 4 summer online there's 50 pts 4 writing a 2 paras. papers and 50 pts 4 making discussion board posts per wk. B ready 2 read hard chapters.

I honestly thought taking his class at night was a mistake, but honestly, he has turned out to be my favorite teacher. show up to his office hours and talk to him and ask him questions he will answer all of them and will love you.

Professor Smith has such a well organized online class for philosophy. You do a short but sweet essay every week, answer the discussion board question and reply to a student and you are golden. Every week , we peer review an essay and give feedback. Grading can be slow so you're grade isn't always current. Good class to take overall!

10/10, bas very understanding when it comes to external situations occurring and will help you out. Uses relatively easy books to give an intro to ethics and later utilitarianism, trust me, the books assigned are better than reading Kant or Plato. 6 essays, some are take home and there is a final paper. you do need to remind him from time to time

Took him for Phil 12 and 15. In 15 you can honestly self teach, but he makes things a lot clearer, logic is not fun. This class give you an intro to formal logic and quite honestly is pretty relaxed, lectures are funny. Make sure you take your time on proofs and Aristotelian logic.

What a great class! The book is long but simple. Smith is really easy grader, too. He's happy if you just submit, it seems. It was online and so (like all online classes) it's up to you to work. You can't not do the discussions and expect a miracle. If you do them, though, it's an easy A. Mathematically, it would be hard not to.

Easy class, I thought- took it online. We had to submit essays and discussions weekly. Sure, philosophy can be dry. But Dr. Smith sent out sample essays (that would get A's) before class for many of the topics. So he tells you what just what he's looking for. And he's an easy grader, I thought As long as I didn't not submit, I got an A.

This will be one of those special classes you will remember for the rest of your life. The readings are fun and interesting. Easy to pass if you follow directions, easy A if you just try. Prof. Smith will help you in every way. I thought it was really fun, I wish I could have him for all of my classes.

I took Dr. Smith's Ethics class. Damn, it was fun. It was at night. We always seemed to race through the three hours. Ethics class was a great introduction to how philosophy is done. Lots of discussion. Actually, Smith changed my mind on a few issued. And as he admits, I changed his. So, a great experience.

Super chill dude, super worth taking the class. Im a philosophy major and learned a lot, without it being too difficult a load on me (as I was taking 4 other classes). Professor is super kind and understanding, dont be afraid to reach out to him! I took the online PHIL1, and it was just discussion boards + 1 paragraph a week, then one final.

His students call him Bas, he is very down to earth and the whole class is Socratic style teaching. Participation matters a lot but the more involved you are, the better youll understand cause he will cater examples to you. His tests are a bit disorganized, but doable.

I'm taking philosophy 1 online. One discussion and really short essay per week. Then the final exam at the end. Great professor and homework is super easy, but is the slowest grader. It's May and he's only graded two of our homework assignments from the beginning of February. But other than that, I recommend!

You really do need the textbook but you can just get it free as a PDF online to save some money. Overall if you read the textbook you will do fine, but he is slow on grading. I think it's fine considering he has a lot of students and assigns weekly short essays and discussions about the reading for the week.

You have an essay and discussion question every week which are easy enough except you don't really know if your doing it right since he provides no feedback and grades really late. There is little room for growth in philosophical writing but you do learn a lot. Exams are hard. really hard. He does provide a study guide but honestly, good luck. READ

This is a fascinating class. Be prepared to read. If you do the reading, you should do well. Also, be prepared to think. Philosophy is not necessarily easy. Dr. Smith writes interesting & helpful introductions to the material each week, and then expects you to write a short essay in response to the reading. I recommend the class.

Really great. We covered a new philosopher every week. Super clear. You have to keep up, of course. But I really enjoyed reading about Plato and similar people. As long as you read, the online essays and exams are really easy. It's one of those courses that you get out of it what you put in.

Professor Smith is very kind and understanding; he let me redo an exam that I did not do well with. Very accessible on Zoom and would help you understand how to solve problems. He also gave us a detailed study guides. Just make sure to do the homework. Essays. Even with that, Dr. Smith dropped our 3 worst grades. Easy A, at least for me.

Basically, this class is great for the history of philosophy. We covered many of the main figures. Grading-wise, there are lots of small essays. Every week. But if you are reading- not skimming- you can easily do them. Dr. Smith always gave great feedback on the essays. I liked this, since I really worked on them. Overall, highly recommended.

Dr. Smith also gave us sample essays from prior semesters and gave us an elaborate study guide for the midterm. So really, if you do the reading and follow directions, it is hard not to get an A.

Dr. Smith is the best. Everything in his online class is super organized. Lots of little essays. Actually, these are easy. True, he was late with grading. But he told us exactly what he wanted, and gave us a study guide. And you could Zoom with him anytime. I always did. If you tried, you got an A.

Awesome professor! Yes, there are weekly essays, but these really helped me improve my writing and critical thinking skills. His sample essays from previous semesters and detailed instructions for the essays were also very beneficial. Professor Smith has been a huge asset to my academic life. Professor Smith was by far the best Professor I had my previous semester. The expectations of the course are straightforward and concise. I recommend starting the readings on time, or even get a head start to them if you have the time. I personally found that the material we read from the books were very timely with our current day and age.

Very structured course with one short essay (couple paragraphs)/week. Do the reading and you'll be fine. I did an async class and didn't have discussion boards. Look at the feedback and think critically from a phil POV. Plus, if you have a 96% average on your essays, you don't have to take the final, lowest three are dropped. Quick responder.

Chill grader, takes a while but grades fair/easy. If you have an A you don't have to take the final which kept me at an A. Talkative (remind to watch the time), understanding, and funny, not super crazy on attendance. I don't usually write reviews but he's a good teacher so I felt I had to. Don't listen to the negative comments on here.

If you have a hard time reading material and writing essays, this class will be hard for you. Lots of material to cover but he is a very generous grader. He does sometimes take a while to get around to grading essays but he is clear in the syllabus what he's looking for and when I messaged him asking for feedback he gave it to me immediately.

If you are looking for a thought provoking class where the professor pushes for an intellectually depth conversation, then this class is for you. Lots of conversation. The prof does a great job of making students feel safe while exploring controversial topics

Easy A, I thought. 8 writings total. One every other week. Grading was pretty generous.

Approachable before and after class. Takes time to talk to any student. Manageable workload. Assigns one chapter per week and then breaks it into two segments. Lecture entertaining. Students must participate. Read, take notes, you will be fine. 2 essays. Plenty of time to correct style if needed. Outlines what is expected for the essays.

I took this class as a Hybrid class, no homework, just readings, and the day we met in person consisted of just lectures, but for my class we had two Essays to be done aka Quizzes. Participation is worth 25% of your grade as long as you show up, or talk a little you can earn an A. Essays can very long, but fun to write, not very strict on format.

The final and the midterm are multiple choice and are a low weighted grade. The weekly homework is just a 600 minimum word essay that is based on the assigned readings that week. I think this is a really good GE to take and the professor is really nice and forgiving. He allowed me to make up a missed assignment 3 weeks later and is very lenient.

This guy is certainly polarizing. 5/6 of my class consisted of people who literally did not care, im sure they hated it, for me and three other people it was a lot of fun and bas is actually a super interesting guy and can be a real gem if you care about philosophy, I've found that it isn't for most and thats okay.

I really enjoyed this class, and it has helped shaped my thinking. I am not sure why there are any negative reviews, since the teacher is at the very least, nice enough to grade high (even if you underperform). So much knowledge that I took and even speak about on a daily basis. Really had me question society/politics and my thoughts. Great class!

TBH I read the syllabus and I was like NO, but it was passed the drop out time, stuck with it and LOVED IT. He is really an amazing Professor, and wish I would have taken the class in person. 2 weeks to do the work so if you say its hard, you are just slacking & not even trying in my opinion. Easy to contact. Very understanding.

Readings can be lengthy, but professor makes sure the lectures and slideshows are entertaining and easy to understand. Won't make you feel stupid for questions, always happy to talk to you about teachings before and after class. I find the classes real entertaining, take in person if you can. You only have a midterm and final paper. Tons of fun

Professor Smith's class is entertaining, with engaging lectures and slideshows. While the readings can be lengthy, he's happy to discuss the material. Unstuck AI was a big help for study prep.

He is in possession of a collection of knowledge that I have not seen out of any professor I have encountered up until this point in time. The only major knock that he obtains is this bad habit of him to derail his lectures on points brought up in lectures, that it can get redundant, but then still you will come away with great familiarity

Despite the load of required readings, the class felt super light. Professor Bas is a great guy, super funny, kinda neurotic (in a relatable way). Lectures are quick and in depth but super engaging, he relates aspects of phil to everyday life. The only assignments are article summaries, one group project, and a final essay. Good guy, great class!

Took this as an 8 week class, 7 essays each minimum 1000 words with a midterm and a final. The midterm and final exams were multiple choice which were not easy because it did have some specific examples from the reading. The readings are really long and not that interesting in my opinion, but they do help. He grades the essays really light however.

Take this class Profesor Bas is amazing! The best in class discussions, you will learn so much! Easy no stress but still really valuble and academic.

Took this class as a requirement but loved it. Lots of writing, but it's easy. Everything is timed, so you write for an hour and you're done. Then two exams. You have to keep reading though. The syllabus seems pretty severe. But when you're in class, it's pretty chill.The professor drops one of the essays and then offers another extra credit one.

Easy class if you read the readings he gives out. Theres only 3 assignments he puts in the grade, midterm exam, final exam, and final essay. ATTENDANCE MATTERS (also being in class on time) miss a few days and he'll start to pick on you. I suggest participating in class that also counts that as a grade. If you're a lazy student don't take him.

This lessons was really interesting and I got so much stuff to learn from. If you like to read and write I think you should take his class and of course you will enjoy it more, but if you don't do much reading this class can be hard. Also Bas knows Spanish and was really interesting to have some conversation outside the class in Spanish with him!

Bas loves engaging in conversation and could talk for hours because he is truly passionate about philosophy. I would recommend talking in class especially because he truly cares about outside ideas and opinions. Only homework is reading that doesn't take long. Overall he's a funny and cool guy once you get to know him.

Professor Smith was great! The load was not to much and he was quite understanding. He did a great job explaining complex concepts during lectures and ensured the success of each student.
