Sure Rahula has an accent, and tends to make boo boos, but there's a lot of good. My writing skills and grasp of grammar got a nice upgrade after taking his class. There's no textbook. If you write good notes and listen to his lectures, the worksheets will be easy. He assigns 3 big papers, and none of them was too hard (Get tutored if needed!).
Easy grader, I made As on everything, problem is he is a teacher who grades on attendance. You can make good grades but if you miss more than a couple classes he won't give you an A no matter what. It does say on his syllabus that attendance affects grade but it wasn't all that clear, so just be aware of that.
I took english 1301 during the summer. It was a very fast paced class but he gave good guidelines on how to write a paper. If you put the effort into the class and turn your work in on time you will do well. We had 6 assignment, 2 test, and three papers to write all in a 5 week period.
By far the worst class to take as a freshman purely because of this professor. He is not understanding of personal circumstances at all. When you explain to him why you had to miss a class, for whatever reason, he looks at you like you've committed the greatest sin. I guarantee you won't understand anything he says. Never stays on topic. -10/10
Would not recommend this class. Repeatedly finds something wrong with your assignment & wants you to redo entire assignment using his own words. Does not hand back graded assignments took me 2 months to get back our 1st essay & that's only because i asked for it. He does not use D2L, the only way to know your current grade is to ask after class
He is a really nice teacher; however, he can be a really tough grader. If the essay is wrong he would return your essay to you to make it again.
1. Hard to understand when speaking he loves to drone on in lectures and gets side tracked 2. HOMEWORK EVERY NIGHT LEADING TO A PAPER EVERY WEEK OR TWO WEEKS 3. GRAMMAR is his main focus the first weeks of school and he expects you to apply it as he shows in class 4. Grading sucks I've compared tests with classmates and he messes up a lot.,
Prof. Rahula is a great teacher, probably one of my favorite teachers to date. He ALWAYS sends the lecture with the HW, so if u weren't listening, or forgot, u can still thrive. He can make time to tutor u if u ask, great if u miss class or need help. He gives ample opportunity for u to pass. If u don't pass his class its bc ur lazy.
If one listens and studies well, one will do well in Dr. Rahula's English 1301 class. He grades very fairly and will give second chances to make up bad grades. Overall, Dr. Rahula is a great professor, and I would gladly take his class again.
Does NOT give papers back in a timely manner what so ever. Never clear on how he will grade your paper or what he wants to see. He does give your papers back with the chance to correct them, but every time you bring it back he finds more things that need to be corrected. Gives extra credit, but only gives you a few hours notice to attend.
He is a good guy but he takes forever to grade and he's very unclear about grades, I had no idea what I had in that class he doesn't use any online program you basically just get all the info from the random emails he sends. He's also really picky about his papers. He will let you redo work but even after you do it how he says he's never satisfied.
WORST CLASS EVER! I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM! makes you redo papers with no explanation. Gives bad grades like candy. If you want to make your life difficult take him and expect to redo do papers at least a couple of times.
I would not recommend this professor at all. Taking this class my first semester made me want to quit school. he grades ridiculously hard and gives no explanation how to do better. I would not even give him a full star.
It was a very hard class for me. Grades are not posted anywhere and the teacher grades very hard. If you are in his class you would receive your assignments by email and this made the class very hard. He has a very thick Sri Lankan accent and that can make him very hard to understand at times.
He is a great teacher! He really helped me a lot! He is always there if you need him, and you can always count on him. I really enjoyed his class and I really recommend taking him as a teacher. I learned a lot and I would take his class again if I could. I really appreciate everything he did for me and I could not be more grateful to him.
I really loved his class. He is a great person and a great teacher! I am really enjoyed his class! He is really compassionate and loves teaching! He makes learning english easier! I am glad I was his student.
His grading is terrible. A paper is due every few days in the online course. He's never clear with any instructions. I usually do very well with papers and I've never made anything above a C in his class.
He was very vague and gave little to no directions his papers, discussions, or assignments. I would only take his class again if I was forced. He was very condescending and his writing techniques were contradictory. He did give good feedback, but it was not universal to all o this assignments. I thank him for the grammar practice, and good luck!!
Run away from this professor. Disorganized and misleading information. Syllabus was never followed and if want to fail a class take his class.
Profesor Rahula was one of the best teaches I ever had in my first college semester because he helped me to believe in myself. Thank you so much Profesor Rahula, for all your support during this semester, and for believing in myself.
I was in Mr. Rahula's English class this year and I speak from my experience that he was without a doubt the English teacher I needed. Mr. Rahula was very understanding at times when I struggled in his class and he always gave constructive feedback. I have had many experiences with English teachers and he was by far the better one. I do thank him
I enjoyed Professor Rahula's class very much this semester. He is an excellent teacher who really takes the time to explain each assignment in detail. He provides great feedback on the assigned papers as well as the quizzes. He genuinely wants each student to succeed in his class. I would definitely recommend him for ENGL 1301.
The only good thing about his course were the inspirational lectures. He's heavy on homework and test taking. So if you are a nervous test taker like me you will fail. I failed myself by not trying at the end of the semester because it just was too hard for me. I felt like there was a lack of compassion towards students like me who are weak testers
I was always a straight A student in English, but he is an awful teacher. Gives papers back & says to redo them with no explanation. Dropped my grade an entire letter bc I missed 3/4 classes when my aunt & uncle died within 2 months & had a surgical procedure. No sympathy even though i did my work & sent proof. I would give him 0 stars if i could.
I wish I could use more tags to describe Professor Rahula. Due to my full time job, Professor took note that my participation in his class was becoming inconsistent and took the time to reach out to me to see how we could best solve my issue. Thanks to his help, I did a great job in the course.
I feel like I had a pretty good grasp of the material, I didn't do great on the quizzes. As for the writing assignments, I feel the feedback was adequate and the grading was a bit tough but fair. It was fair and educational enough for me to choose Professor Rahula for both English 1 and 2.
Third time I've taken 1302 to improve my grade. Professor Rahula is a technical grader, which is the part of English I actually appreciate. The introduction of the class was very focused on grammar and punctuation rules. I took a 12-week course and he cancelled a long paper the 16-week normally has to write. Gives short, pleasant lectures.
I really enjoyed taking his class. He uploads videos of him giving the lecture as well as the document with the lecture, so you can use both to study. When he grades papers, he leaves notes of your mistakes so you can improve.
Professor Rahula is an excellent teacher, and I learned a lot from him. You have to work hard and keep track of the class daily. He puts a big effort and dedication to his class.
Professor Rahula REALLY wants his students to learn better writing skills! In addition to his recorded lectures, he gives links to various youtube lessons for examples of relevant content. He gives detailed feedback on writing assignments. Would take classes with him again.
In order to have an A in this class u will need to do all the assignments and put some effort. He is not a tough grader. If u do the assignments in time, u should be fine
Professor Rahula is a great professor. He genuinely cares about his students and explains assignments very well. People just have to make sure and pay attention because everything is pretty easy.
Professor Rahula after getting over the tough accent is an amazing teacher and obviously loves teaching English.
Honestly, he is a good teacher and very caring. Take a lot of notes helps on quizzes a lot and really good at giving feedback on essays
He was really good at first but fell off halfway through the semester. He posted randomly so check for assignments seven days a week and on holiday breaks. He didn't post any updates for two weeks, then shaved two weeks off of a due date for an essay so be prepared to adjust to new due dates. He wasn't very responsive to emails.
I took this class in spring 2021 and it was easy with this professor. He was organized and sent videos explaining to us the class. Also, we had enough time to fix essays and study for quizzes. He sent extra homework for people who needed grades and was willing to respond emails so fast. I got A in this class. Really, he was an amazing teacher!
For such a harsh grader, Dr. Rahula sure doesn't mind having terrible writing errors in his emails, his prompts, and his announcements. In his intro video, he grandiosely proclaims that this class will be the most important class in your college career and that it will completely change your life. TL;DR: good material; bad behavior.
I had him for both ENGL 1301 and 1302. 1302 was basically just a repeat of 1301 which was super nice. The grammar course for the first 5 weeks was super helpful, and I would recommend him just for that alone. All the papers had a clear outline of what was expected from them.
Plugged his own YouTube which wasn't even in English and no translations. He played 5 minutes of an interview also not in English. Made up stories in lecture to try and say that a bunch of people went to his class specifically because that would fix their life. He then asked about English in the second class that wasn't on the homework he assigned.
Very heavy accent and monotone. Lectures give you the first hand experience of what a lobotomized person would feel like. He tends to get very quiet and is very hard to understand.
I get it is an online course but every time I would fail an exam or quiz, I would ask what I did wrong because he wouldn't allow us to go back and check what we did wrong. Then would respond to my email with "You seem to not understand the material, come into my office." I'm online because the commute is so far, just open to quizzes.
This guy is awful he grades so badly and leaves no feedback on quizzes and he takes points off for grading when he messes up all the time of grammar and spelling. He shows up to class late when class starts at 8:30 he gets there about 10 minutes later. He makes randoms videos on his youtube channel that don't make sense.
Do not take this class if English isn't your first language, his accent is really difficult to understand even if it is. Also, the papers we have to write are based on HIS YouTube videos, which aren't nearly compelling enough to justify writing essays from. I love English, and this class is a slog.
In 2021 when i was very depressed and took his class, he is the first professor who actually cared for me. Many of his lessons have deeper meanings that go hand-in-hand with Buddhism. He is more than a professor, he is a loving mentor. His accent is thick, understanding some words can be hard; but its not anything context clues cant fill in.
never met a more egotistical person in my life, only talks about himself, his YouTube channel which he will frequently bring up (where he speaks in another language) (and will tell you to reference it) he's a Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka, I aswell as others couldn't comprehend what he was saying, DROP OR MOVE CLASSES TERRIBLE PROFESSOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The professor can be hard to understand at times, but if you stay engaged and use helpful tools like Unstuck ai for study prep, you'll learn a lot. Attend class, do the work, and you'll likely get a good grade.
First time in college and he definitely shouldn't have been my first choice. Not only does he say he is available through certain times to email, but claims he is here to help. I have emailed and gotten no response back...ever. In class if you ask for help or say you don't understand he surely knows how to make you feel a little dumb. Not good!!
He claims he is there to help but he really not. I have email him and ask him question and email him I won't be in class because of family things, I never got a email back. We where doing a research paper and he said everything was wrong and that I just need to be quite, listen to what I have to say and just sit there. He made me feel belittle.
He is a great person! However, I did not enjoy his teaching style. I'm sorry, but his lectures were boring and made it hard to focus. Additionally, he was a very tough grader. If you already picked him as your professor, please go to every single one of his lectures, as he will give you extra credit at the end of the semester.
I like him as a person, but I don't think he is a good professor, he doesn't explain in an efficient way, constantly repeating himself, never replies to emails, test questions have grammar errors, and, despite he always talking about responsibility, he took 2 months to grade an assignment I turned in, even though I reminded him constantly about it
