bayo is like manna from heaven! he is cordial, helpful, and has a great sense of humor. with him, you will overcome all your composition fears. trust me, everybody LOVES Bayo :)
Excellent teacher. Bayo creates a very good atmosphere in his classroom and he has a great sense of humor. His class isn't difficult but it isn't easy either. The first person that wrote this review is right, everyone loves Bayo!
bayo is way cool, and totally understanding. he is a tough grader, but he makes you want to work hard - and its worth it. he creates interesting and progressive discussion - go for it!!!!
Bayo was an awesome guy. He has a good sense of humor and I enjoyed being a part of his class. He actually takes time to get to know the students and seems very intent on helping us succeed. Sometimes discussions were repeptitive, but overall good class.
Bayo is an AWESOME teacher! His only request is that you put forth effort in his class, and if you do, he will try and assist you in any way possible- he even meets outside of his office hours if a student is having problems- he is an amazing professor!!!
Bayo's class is crazy - we spent 5 weeks talking about weird stuff like Janet Jackson and courtney love exposing themselves, then at week 6, we have to scramble to complete actual research for actual work. repetitive, random , disorganized
bayo is too cool for school. his grading is pretty picky and it's hard to know what he wants or what is good enough for an A. but he is very nice and willing to listen and help when he can. everyone should experience the bayo!
I love Bayo-his class isn't just english-it's political science, philosophy and english! Bayo is extremely open-minded and really makes you think-his discussions in class have been some of my favorite. Don't expect an easy A though.
He was a great teacher. Discussions were fun and interesting. Very understanding and interested in up to date topics. Its pretty guarenteed you will love him. He is one of the best teachers i have had here and by far one of the most intelligent
He sinteresting funny and an overall nice guy. he keeps the class fun and is leniant with homework. good teacher and interesting classes
Amazing teacher. He is the best teacher I have had at DePaul. It is not a slacker course but if you get a chance take one of his classes. One can learn a lot from Bayo but don't let is large vocabulary intimidate you.
As a teacher he was ok. He became very disorganized at the end with the presentations. We had to use extra time in class to finish the presentations and not only that he made me go last when it wasn't my fault he didn't organize the timing. But he is cool
Extremely tough grader, but if you enjoy discussions about society take this class. He wants everyone involved, just make sure you can keep up in this class and you'll sneak out with a B at least
He is the most intellegent person I have had for a teacher. A lot of his discussions are very deep but he involves everyone of his students to make class fun. All the readings are easy but you have to make sure you pay attention to them if you plan on geting a good grade on the papers. Take him!
He's an awesome teacher. Very funny and kept the class interesting. Papers but no tests or final. Take Bayo for isp.
He's awesome and completely down to earth. He makes sure you develop SOME opinion on everything, which is good. Papers are not bad at all. Class discussions are often and it is to your utmost advantage to participate OFTEN.
The discussions were amazing if you enjoy opinions and debates. Very interactive, but he sometimes would blabber on these rants that never ended but it doesn't matter because you can tune him out and he still thinks you are listening. Overall, great teacher.
The MOST bias teacher I have ever met. Journals? They are soo stupid! He doesn't even check them! Can we say mumble?! I repeatidly asked him to speak up but he just snubbed me away. I got a B and an african-american that never showed up got an A. ****?! I think so. Waste of time class.
He's very cool and is a very fair grader
He is extremely intelligent and the best english teacher i have ever had
Well, he is a nice guy, but sometimes his supposed lectures seem like he's rambling and he goes off on random tangents. Tough Grader? I wouldnt say so. We didnt really stay productive in class at all, just did a few papers. You don't really "put forth" effort in this class.

gives dumb assignments. teaches you how to do reaserch..WE ARE IN COLLEGE WE KNOW HOW TO DO THAT. mumbles a lot. doesnt show up to class. he is a joke
He is by far one of the best professors I have had at DePaul yet. He is very intelligent and is always willing to meet with students outside of class. Ojikutu will not waste your time or money, he is well worth every dollar spent. Who ever wrote those negative comments must not like to be challenged, we are in college, its time to grow up.
HE IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!!
Do you think HE likes teaching a boring research class? I mean, the man writes fiction novels! He tries to make the class as interesting as possible. He's very intelligent, super cool, and willing to listen to the insane idiotic babble and b.s. topics people would come up with in class. The class was only painful when moronic students would speak.

this dude rocked...sure he mumbles and you loose him at time...but he was so cool. plain and simple...do your work and you get an A.
TERRIBLE TEACHER. i didn't learn anything in the class, and thought it was a waste of time. i would never take a class with him again.
Bayo is great. He's an awesome guy, and a really talented author (read 47th Street Black, and he has a new one coming out). His lectures aren't that helpful, but he's really more of a creative writing expert and putting up with clauses and warrants would be tough for anyone. Definitely recommend him, very easy grader too.
his lectures are actually somewhat enjoyable
very interesting teacher. very smart and admires good writing. take him! take him! You'll definitely get an A if you pay attention and does what he asks you to do.
he is horrible, very boreing lectures that get off on long pointless tangents. i learned nothing about writing in this class, and i think he grades very unfairly, i felt judged because of my opinions that usaully differed with his
He's very nice and still remembers me after two years. He makes you write a bunch of papers but more lenient at the end. very soft-spoken and boring occasionally, but very cool guy
One of the best professors I have ever had. The smartest teacher and definately showed that in class. Fair grader, but was slow at grading them. He was very insightful and was a pleasure to listen to. Drifted at times, but we an amazing professor. Get him he's awesome!!
Professor Ojikutu was probably my favorite professor in my first quarter at DePaul. Class was mostly discussion, with him stopping every once in a while to make sure we stayed somewhat on topic. He never shut anyone down in class simply for espousing an opposing viewpoint. Which is important at an often blindly liberal school such as DePaul.
I would not recommend his class. Assignments were unclear, his lectures had absolutely nothing to do with English and he handed back 2 of the almost 15 assignments we had in class. If you are looking for an easy class, take him. If you want to learn something, i'd look somewhere else.
Great teacher. Realy deep conversations. He let us know that the only thing that matters is the assignments (we only had 4 for the whole semester) it didn't feel like you had to do the readings as long as you where able to give civilized discouse. DON'T DO THE JOURNALS TILL THE LAST DAY He usualy forgets about them anyway!
You'll be lucky to have him as a professor! His lectures are one's that are rare...they're interesting!
Cool Guy... He knows what he is talking about however at times it is evident- that he doesn't want to be there or teaching the class which can be uninspiring. Paper topics can be strange and confusing as well...but overall, I liked the class
he is a great teacher, def participate & show that u have some intelligence. he has interesting lectures & lets u out of class early a lot. raise ur hand and ask questions & he'll love u. 4 papers + particaption =ur garde. he's badass take him :)
The Best!
awesome...
Talk in class and he'll like you. Papers are hard to understand but its really hard to get less than a B on them unless you're an idiot. Histerical class discussions. One of the best and funniest teachers I ever had.
Very nice professor. Easy and very knowledgable.
Hard to understand his assignments. Talks very fast, but if you can follow he makes good point. Easy to get a good grade.
terrible teacher. mumbles, gives no drection or feedback, runs class discussion poorly, lectures quietly to himself, not to the class. confusing assignments. stupid questions on class comments. this class is a waste of time.
great person overall, good class overall but did not learn very much. He mumbles his lectures at the board for about half the class and the other half he is talking to himself. Does bring up some interesting topics. If you want to listen (or not listen) to someone talk take it. easy A
Awful. He speaks to the chalkboard and mumbles. His assignments are unclear. He cancelled class and graded papers during class time. He makes waste of class time like its his job. Some of the ideas discussed are interesting, but the man has attitude! He is argumentative and arrogant. DO NOT TAKE...WASTE OF YOUR MONEY!
i love ojikutu he is the best ever, he has very interesting discussions and assignments arent that bad if you do the reading
The most pretentious teacher I have ever met. I would not recommend taking this class, but if you end up in it it is not that bad. He lectures to the board and assignments take at least 10 minutes to decipher what he is even talking about
He was so unorganized and was 2 weeks late getting my rough draft back to me. It should have taken him one night to do it... tthats how it was with everyone else's paper! Also we learned maybe 3 concepts the first week of classes and after that we did absolutely nothing. Hands down worst english teacher ever, i dont know why depaul keeps him!!!!
Ojikutu does not organize class time and discussions well. This was a workshop class and people were giving more feedback than the class time permitted and Ojikutu did not stop them. The class went on overtime into spring break. The professor does mumble and his instructions are unclear and not directed at the students.
Great professor, class discussions are not only about the readings but he also relates them to real world situations. He is very knowledgeable and makes class interesting. He does mumble sometimes but if you listen to what he's saying, he's probably cracking a joke. He's awesome, take him!
Clearly these raters have no understanding of the privilege of being taught by a two time published and decorated novelist. Come on DePaul, I expect more from you. Stop expecting to be entertained and listen to the man; he's brilliant.
Carlton Banks.
He is one of the best teachers ive had
Bayo is the illest in the game. Not many understood his sense of humor in the early classes, but once you do you realize the guy is hilarious. He the smartest teacher ive ever had. He cares about his students, and always offers help.
no one could understand anything he said. its the way he talks and writes. i had to send an assignment to my mother who is a writer and an editor to have her decipher it for me. it took her half an hour to try and figure out what he wanted us to do. he also insulted me in an email when i asked for help. also a tough grader.
very smart, very funny guy. Yes he tends to ramble on on his lectures..but he is very intelligent. very willing to give feedback for papers. READ the books and participate in class and you will do fine. 1 pop quiz, 1 paper, 1 test, 1 final paper. not too demanding. easy load. easy A, would recommend
This professor is incredibly intelligent, passionate & inspiring. He will make you think & question the way you view yourself and the world around you. Plus, he is a novelist. His assignments were not the easiest but I greatly enjoyed them & learned a lot... Finished w/ an A, so it was worth it.
Did not really understand what he was talking about. He mumbles threw things and goes off on tangents. Does not help students when they need it. Really difficult to deal with. I understand that hes a published writer but I don't think he has any business teaching.
Awesome class, amazing teacher. I would recommend Film and Lit to everyone. He does use big words but he is smart and nice. One of the dopest teachers at DePaul.
He may have an impressive vocablary, but everything he says is repetitive, and his lectures are unhelpful. We only has class once a week, but he often did not show up, and he seemed to see no problem with this. He assigned papers only 2 days before the day they were due, one of which was the Sunday after Halloween. I am not a fan.
His writing is attrocious and he often requires you to write down random thoughts he has, but no one can even come close to how much he knows about the subject. He is quite funny, and very approachable. Only lectures, and they are quite boring, but very informative.
The class was not completely organized, so it was a little frustrating never really knowing details about assignments. The actual class was a good class to take. Very useful workshops. The most helpful part of this class were the peer workshops.
Those who rate him poorly have ridiculously high standards for people. He's great! He's smart, funny, helpful, knowledgeable. Granted, he mumbles a lot but it's a kind of enlightened Einsteinian sort of scattered-brained mumble. And, yeah, he isn't particularly organized, but, in exchange, there's lenience on his part. I'd recommend.
He was decent. Four books for this class which you hardly use..I'd recommend borrowing them for the library which will save you about $100. He tends to mumble and his handwriting is horrible. He's kinda boring and uses too many big words..like he can't say what he wants simply and wants to show off his vocabulary. Overall I'd give the class a C
Professor is very interesting. He is very intelligent and witty. He leaves any sort of political correctness behind and gets to the true root of why things happen. He is always there to help personally and professionally and takes deep interest in his students. I would take another class from him anytime.
Bayo is a great teacher, he really cares about what he teaches and knows his stuff...hes an author and also teaches at the university of chicago, descent amount of reading but as long as you read most of it and speak up in class he will take a liking to you, very good teacher
My favorite teacher at DePaul by far. He gets you to think about things in a way you never would have thought of. You discuss things like the definition of race. Get to know him because if you do hell care about you as a person not just a student. He is hard, because he is smart but its not hard to get a good grade if you put a little effort.
I took him for my focal point -Chicago's Black Migration Narrative. He is really interesting and knowledgable on his subject. If you do the readings and participate in class you will get an A.
I love Ojikutu, seriously adore him. He really opens your eyes to a lot about the Black Migration to Chicago. He is a novelist himself and very passionate about the subject. He expects a lot on papers but its totally worth the work.
Took him for 111 and 112. Both great classes. Great guy. Class is always very interesting. I skipped his class once and I actually felt bad for doing so haha. Opens your eyes to a whole lotta things. His LSP classes are pretty easy, you do have to participate though!
Extremely Intelliegnt Professor, has a lot to say. Definitely take him
Black Migration to South Side: This class was really oddly structured. He said he hadn't taught the class for several years and you could tell. The class is an easy A as long as you read and participate. Didn't seem like he wanted to teach the class. He would often just mumble big words and go on never-ending tangents. Solid guy, though.
On my first day of class, I was worried. I sat down and was met with a very very smart man, which worried me because I feared that my writing would not meet his standards. My worry faded quickly though as I realized how compassionate & caring he is, along with being a simply great teacher. I miss his class and having him as my professor.
He is so funny and I do not think he realizes how funny he is. I wish I had him in a physical class so I could participate more. But had him for my Deep South to SouthSide Focal Point Course and he is very knowledgable. He can be a little confused when giving out assignments, but this class was easy.
I took his HON 110 class on gentrification in Bronzeville. He is so caring for his students and I swear he is an angel sent from above.
Professor Ojikutu was my favorite professor this winter quarter!! He has a great sense of humor and interesting lectures. The material we read was very informative and opens your eyes on the real world.
Very engaging lectures that show different points of views and offered several truths that I never even thought of. I recommend getting the novels from the library instead of buying them. He takes a little to warm up to but once you get to know him and engage with him in the class you realize how amazing he is.
Ratings on this professor are misleading, great guy but terrible teacher. He knows what he's talking about but cannot give any clear instructions on what he expects of us. Doesn't post instructions on how to complete our homework and has extremely confusing lectures. Basically just watching and reading things and hearing him go on random tangents.
He was okay, interesting material and very knowledgeable about this topic. But, the man gave up teaching years ago. If you have to take this class, then don't miss one class because he never posts anything on d2l.
Actually really liked professor Ojikutu. As long as you do the readings participate/show an interest in the course material you will perform well in this class. He's extremely intelligent and if you pay attention during his lectures you can see that. Pretty old school when it comes to technology as in he doesn't really use it at all.
