Extremely knowledgeable with a teaching style that is probably unlike any you've encountered. Be comfortable with thinking out loud, with unusual assignments, with a non-directive teaching style, and with engaging difficult texts. If you do all that, you'll have a cool semester with a cool teacher and you'll learn a lot.

Extremely intelligent and thoughtful. She tends to teach upper level material, and it isn't challenging to see why. How can one professor speak so much yet say so little? Only halfway done and i need OUT. You could literally pass away and still be marked absent. She made her own book, its not even done. How is that even ethical? Only pro is the exams are like 190 points and only u need to do half of it right to get an A. The problem is getting the right info...

Mclaughlin is an amazing teacher if you want to major in something involving English, besides that this 101 class is taught at a level 400 class at best. Lots of home readings about very mundane pieces of work, and then you get interrogated about the deeper meaning for an hour in her class. Good luck having an A+, because she grades very harshely.

Wrote her textbook used for class, so anything she says cannot be argued against or she will be very passive-aggressive. It does not matter if you are about to take your last breath, you will not be excused. EVERYTHING talked about is based on religion. Makes you turn in assignments each week and will give you a 0 but not explain what was wrong.

You will read the textbook cover to cover. I hate history based things and hated having to read so many things that don't make sense in modern English, but McLaughlin was always there to help and is genuinely interested in what she teaches and is very inspiring. I think she's a great teacher and made the class interesting.

So the book used in this class is written by her. You cannot make any argument without her getting petty. A great deal of the course is just her inflating her own ego. She doesn't seem to care much for the success of her students, just presenting herself as an intellectual. Also her grading makes no sense, removes points cause she didn't like it.

Literally walked out of class the other day when we had 30 min left because someone went to go get water. Was very unprofessional. She does not seem to care about any of her students success other than her own since the textbook you read is her own book. Please do not take her. Most people in my class are not passing by the slightest.

Mean is an understatement. Disagreeing with her is not allowed. Her lectures are just chances for her to inflate her ego

She was a decent teacher, although disagreeing with statements she makes in class will cause her to grade you more harshly than your peers. You are required to read the textbook provided pretty much everyday, I advise to annotate as your read, information you find that seems important. She gives good, easy extra credit pretty often.

genuinely the worst professor i've had at south. never excuses absences even if you have a doctors excuse or are in a CAR ACCIDENT. she only teaches to boost her ego, mind you, she wrote the textbook so it's purely her opinion instead of actual history.

DO NOT TAKE HER, she requires attendance everyday, with no excuses. she literally does not care what excuse you give her. has a big ego & wrote the textbook herself, the exams have over a 100 questions on them, she wants you to memorize large quotes from text.. list goes on & on, WORST PROFESSOR AT SOUTH.

She's clear on what she wants: read the material and view it through the lens of that historical period. Don't use a modern lens, or you'll struggle. Old English is tough, but her expectations are clear. Tests are long, multiple-choice, and hard to fail if you try. She's passionate and thoughtful. Not for everyone, but I'd recommend her.

Overall the class wasn't to hard. There is a LOT of reading though. Your grade is made of couple quizzes and 3 tests. The test have a lot of questions but you only have to get 90 points to get an A out of like 160 points. Class is just her talking about what you read and can get boring sometimes, but she is very clear about what are on the test.

Professor McLaughlin's class was very informative. This course was a very film-oriented English Composition course, so there was a lot of outside work for students. The syllabus changed a lot, but Professor McLaughlin was very great about listening to student feedback and making changes for us when we advocated for them.
