She has three exams including the final , does not curve at all for the exams despite the class avg being in the mid-70's, lectures are baby level but exams are not, and clicker questions count for both participation and getting the answer correct. Avoid her if you can
Avoid this class at all costs. Does not answer questions. I am a hard worker who has never even come close to failing a class, and I am walking a fine line in this one. She is condescending and rude, and makes it clear that she is the smartest person in the room. Lectures are elementary, and the exams impossible.
Professor Miller is GREAT! She posts videos of every lecture, and will answer any questions you have outside of class via email. I find her test to be pretty easy ( if you study well). There is never anything unexpected. She gives questions throughout the class to prepare you for the test. One of the best professors that I have ever taken a class with.
Interesting class, but extremely possible! I attended every single class, met with Professor Miller often to clarify material, and studied an unbelievable amount and still didn't do great on exams.
Started of very basic, so the first 2 tests were wicked easy. After that it all went down hill. She tested us on the dumbest things and focussed on stupid topics from previous chapters for no reason. ?'s are written to purposefully confuse you and make you question everything you studied. Do really well on the first 2 tests to outweigh last 2.
Becky is really caring, helpful, and a very good teacher. She tries to simplify the concepts as much as possible, and knows how to use lecture time well. The exams are a little tricky. Do not buy the textbook; I didn't and still got an A. The fall semester is TBL and that's annoying if your group sucks, but overall Becky is a good prof.
Biochem 420, if youre trying to just memorize stuff and not actually understand the material you're screwed. This class really isn't that hard if you have a basic understanding of metabolism and biology. read the lecture slides and understand them and youll ace the exams.
Miller is awful. She made the lecture into team based learning (which is already awful) but we're in a normal lecture hall so it just doesn't work. Her lectures are dull and do not help. The homework is based on how many you get correct, not on completion and you have a limited number of tries. I wish I could take this with a different professor
Becky seems like she might be a nice lady, but her lectures are extremely boring. The homework assignments she posts are quite difficult, sometimes harder than the exam questions. In order to get an A you really have to pay attention and keep up with the material but it is tough because she is so boring to listen to.
I loved Becky Miller! I actually didn't mind going to biochem. She is super understanding and is willing to work with you! I had to miss an exam and she allowed me to pick when I could make it up and lets the class pick the amount of absences you get. She is actually the sweetest human and I would definitely take a class with her again.
Her tests are really really hard. TBL has its benefits, but I think it only works for some. Prepare to do a lot of self-studying, because only 20% of the materials that you need to know are taught in class, and you need to study the other 80% by other means.
She's very kind and cares about her students, but unfortunately her exams are unfair. You need to teach yourself almost all of the material and you STILL won't be prepared for the questions she comes up with no matter how much you study
Pretty reasonable course, exams are mostly based on material covered in class, but very specific. Team based learning, so your grade does depend on group work and your team members rating of you. The exams get harder as you go, final is not cumulative. Memorize each detail and be thorough on your answers to classwork.
Prof. Miller is one of the best and most helpful professors in the Biochemistry Department. She cares deeply about her students and is always available by email or office hours. We did not need to go to class often, which was good. For quite a few assignments, you hand in and get full credits. Overall, the class was enjoyable and easy.
I had Becky Miller this past Fall semester, and she was amazing. She made the class very enjoyable in every way. She is understanding that we are students from all different backgrounds and provides us the material in a clear and concise way. She will ask a question in class, let us solve it and then every time go over the answer piece by piece.
Becky Miller is great. She is one of the only professors I know that actually speaks slowly and recognizes that yes indeed, we are all taking notes. Also the class is set up for you to pass and do well. There are many opportunities to get good grades in projects, team evaluations, quizzes, homework, etc. Her exams are tough, but fair for the level.
Very caring professor, wants you to do well, don't necessarily have to read the pre lectures unless you're lost, do the HW in groups to get high percents, and take time on group exam sections. Exams got progressively harder but she's a good professor, go talk to her for advice.
Becky honestly made this class so much more difficult than it needed to be. This class is for non biochem majors and should be structured in such a way. She focused on the smallest details and was really out to trick you, especially with her wording, on each exam. Make sure to take this class during a semester where your course load isn't heavy!
She does an amazing job explaining things in lectures! Biochem is tricky but she makes it straightforward. Her tests are super tricky though but if you study everything on the slides and remember the TBL group activities its fine.
Prof. Miller genuinely cares about her students. Given the level, it's fair that her exams are challenging and test you on your depth of understanding, not just recognizing a concept. If you want to excel, I'd suggest regularly attending the SI sessions. The course really builds on itself, so it's important to not fall behind.
Becky is fantastic however she is very difficult. Her exams become exponentially hard. Study the slides well, read the textbook to understand it better (small things show up on exams), study the homework questions and in class activities and LISTEN when she talks.. a lot of information you need she says, but doesn't write.
I have so many FEELINGS about Becky. Lectures are great and so helpful, when she's actually talking and not wasting time. She gives out a lot of "free" points (hw, extra credit, attendance) but exams are difficult if you don't have old ones to study from.
Sweetest human ever, cares about her students. Tests are hard but DOABLE, I recommend studying from lectures and homework assignments. She runs the class understanding that we're all human and have limitations, but this is a 400 level course, do not expect it to be a walk in the park.
Becky definitely cares about your learning. She's one of the few professors who doesn't rush through lectures just to squeeze them in. She takes her time, and makes clear slides that convey exactly what you need to know. She truly cares about the student's success, and that's something that I appreciated.
This class is advertised as a course for non biology majors but it is so heavy in terminology/background information. Its insanely hard and the tests are so difficult. Her lectures are spent going over a practice problem and answering questions in the class- we rarely ever go over material in class your expected to do it yourself at home.
Horrible. Exams count for 60% of your grade. The other 40% is homework and "participation" but she'll find any reason to take off points. She claims her in-class activities are graded for effort alone, yet you will get points taken off and have no idea why bc she doesnt give them back. Lecture is a waste of time. Take this class at another school
I am a nutrition major and this was the hardest class Ive ever taken. Miller was very friendly when I spoke with her one on one but during the lecture she would spend 15 minutes answering a geniuses hypothetical question only to wrap it up by saying "You don't need to know any of that for this class", mean while I was completely tuned out and lost.
Becky is the sweetest human you will ever meet and a great professor. Don't fool yourself - this is a hard class and you will need to put in the necessary work to get the grade you want. Her lectures can be hit or miss in terms of efficiency but she is really great in office hours and offers lots of extra credit to boost your grade. Loved her!
this class was only okay, the prof tends to get sidetracked in lecture and the pace can be very variable - ranging from too slow to too fast because the rest of the material needs to be squeezed into the end of class. make sure to complete mastering chem online homeworks and prelecture assignments - re-doing these problems was a great way to study
Becky's fantastic. A lot of people rate this class poorly bc they have never taken a real science class before. Becky speaks slowly in lecture and uses lots of real-world examples. Her exams are tough but fair, and really assess your understanding with the inclusion of 2-3 open response questions. Understand HW + class understand exam. My fav!!!!
No lectures. No support. Basically just no teaching done by this professor or her TA. You teach yourself and take rediculously hard HW and exams. She acts like she wants to improve yet hasn't changed a thing. Just imagine teaching yourself biochem. This is it. The class exam avg have been 67 and 72. That should tell you something.
you teach yourself and the exams are worth 60%. everyone does bad on them
Professor Miller was one of the best professor I have ever had! She is EXTREMELY accessible outside of class, explains things thoroughly, and always takes the time to understand and answer your questions about material. If you put the work into the class, your grade will reflect this. Take measures to understand the material and you will be fine.
I just took her for the summer and as the previous post mentioned this is actually the worst class I have ever taken. She was NOT helpful at all. None of the resources she provided helped with the exams. There were no lectures, you taught yourself. Hard grader. I cannot emphasize enough how terrible this class was. Don't take it with her.
Her exams are difficult and the exam averages are still in the 60's & low 70's and that's with scaling. There are no lectures which to me is a perfect example of how much she cares about her students succeeding. The grading scale is not adjusted for the difficulty of the class so you will probably end up ruining your GPA. I regret taking this class
Exams are much harder than what we learn in class or do on the homework. Even with immense prep. the exams are very difficult.
I took this class remotely this past semester and it was very difficult. The professor was not very lenient with the homework assignments considering the pandemic and no late work was accepted. The exams were very difficult and I often felt the material we learned wasn't even on it. I also felt like I really didn't learn much the whole semester.
I took this class as a pre-med requirement fall 2020 online, and it was so hard. I studied so much for the exams and they would still be extremely difficult because what I studied for in the lectures weren't even on the exams. She didn't seem to understand that students have other classes to study for.
I have no idea why her ratings are so bad, Im taking the course online and she is the most caring and thorough professor Ive ever had. She speaks super clearly and calmly and she also reviews the recorded content in live class. Exams have been fair, and she provides extra credit, overall she explains content very well and is very approachable
Professor Miller is hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. She cares so much about her students. Her lectures are genuinely good enough to watch before an exam as all of the studying you do. Her tests are fair and many questions are extremely similar to the ones we get as practice each week.
I was really nervous to take this class because of the poor reviews but Professor Miller is actually very sweet and caring, her lectures are clear and the quizzes and homework help a lot with preparing for exams. It is definitely a difficult course but she taught concepts clearly and gave fair questions on exams. Only negative is exams are 60% lol
Becky is a very fair professor and I personally think that her lectures are clear of what needs to be known for an exam. I won't deny that the biochemistry content was difficult, but her class certainly made it very doable.
She's a nice professor and clearly cares about her students. Her lectures are easy to follow. Don't stress too much if the first exam goes poorly, because it gets somewhat easier from there as long as you do the practice problems and pay attention to lecture. My only complaint is that she answers too many (unrelated) questions during lecture.
Professor Miller talks extremely slowly, which often made it difficult to focus on the point she was trying to make. She does offer super easy extra credit. This class was rough, but she cares a lot about her students and is willing to work with you to help you do well.
Becky's lectures and review materials are clear, and she does a good job explaining more complex topics. She does talk slowly, making lectures feel long, but she uploads all of them to echo360. There are plenty of opportunities to boost your grade even though it is a difficult course. A caring prof who puts in effort to get to know her students.
Professor Miller is a wonderful professor. As a junior writing professor, she always gives good feedback to each assignment and willing to share her stories with you! But you have to show up to class every time and participate in class, or you may lose your attendance point.
I really don't know why these reviews are low. She is so straight forward and her lectures are easy to digest. Simply just do the work and try and you will be fine.
Very nice and accessible professor. As someone who really likes scientific writing, I feel her class helped me a lot. The lectures are pretty low-energy but easy to understand. She speaks slowly but I have an auditory processing disorder so that was fantastic for me--though I can understand why people might dislike it. Values mental health a lot.
Professor Miller is amazing at teaching. She is really realistic when it comes to the amount of information that you need to know for her exams and even lets you bring a flashcard with notes to them. She is also just a really nice person!
I tended to struggle a bit with BioChem but with Prof. Miller's assistance, I was able to figure out many things and did reasonably well in the end, despite the rough beginnings. Don't be afraid to go to her for help, she is very patient and explains concepts clearly.
treats students like little kids and not like adults. takes 75 minutes to explain the most simple concepts and expects you to pick up the slack of lost material due to time. also, homeworks are way too much, because students actually have 4 more classes. assigns unnecessary busy-work to makeup for lost time due to the slowest talking ive ever seen.
She rambles so much in class, and she says one thing that confuses me and puts a different answer on the test. The tests also have many questions where she did not go over the topic before hand, so I didn't know the answers. Tests are more than half your grade, so I am worried about my grade for this class...
Lots of questions on tests that were not talked about in class. Do not take this class if you want to tank your GPA. Every test is curved because the class average is always under passing. I went through all the material, lectures, practice exam, SI sheets, note card and still ended up with a test score in the 60s..
Definitely a class I underestimated after reviewing the krebs cycle 100th time in my other courses. Make sure to do utilize office hours because Prof Miller tends to break it down into analogies for the student to understand. HW is important since stuff on it is very similar to exams.
Makes class easy to attend (zoom, in person, async), but takes so long to get to the point. Will spend 40 minutes on one slide just to rush through the rest. Tests are hard if you only attend lectures and do homework. SI instructor should honestly just teach this course because they can explain material in less time and way more cohesively to pass.
Yes she cares and worries about students who are falling behind. Teaching style does not fit with me. It is pretty unorganized and not clear. She rambles a lot and spends the first 40 minutes of class doing announcements or answering questions. Exams are very hard. Heard last year exams were take home on owl, but now they are in person.
Becky Miller is nice. I found her lecture style to not fit me at all. She talks very slowly and doesn't explain the concepts well IMO. She does tell you what will be on the exam but the exam questions relate to things not covered in class. I found her to be quite confusing and she skips over things that show up on exams. Nice, but not for me.
I really like Becky. She's nice and makes an effort to help students. The content is difficult and she really wants students to understand the WHY to all the concepts and be able to explain it on exams. Exams make up 60% of your grade which is the negative. Don't be afraid of going to her office hours and going to the SI sessions was helpful.
Becky's awesome lectures broke down challenging concepts into digestible parts for elementary biochem. She has a very well-structured curriculum with weekly homework and forum posts that really did help with comprehension of the material. She always answers in-class questions and tries to remember everyone's name. Highly recommended for Biochem 320
Amazing teacher. By far one of the best Umass has to offer. Very few professors actually seem to care about your students, but Professor Miller goes above and beyond. Makes very tough material enjoyable and supports you along the way.
Biochem is hard but Prof. Miller breaks down hard concepts like a champion. She slowly explains concepts and makes sure everyone in class understands what she is talking about. She is caring and if you are falling behind on studying she can help as well. I am so glad I took her! She doesn't rush in lectures, I love group activities as well
Professor Miller is definitely the best professor I have ever had for a STEM class. She is incredibly caring and fair, and is extremely flexible, offering multiple ways to attend classes and get participation credit. The material is hard and so are the tests, but she does a great job breaking them down during lecture. I highly recommend her!!
One of the worst professors I've had. Lectures did not teach much and were just group discussions half of the time. She did not know the answers to many questions. It seemed like she was teaching a course she just learned the weeks before.
She is a great professor, the notes and slides are very organized and helpful. Very kind and accommodating, and responds to issues quickly. The subject matter of the class can be challenging. You REALLY need to put in the effort to do well - if confused, do NOT wait until later to get help. Review in-class practice problems. Overall excellent.
There's extra credit opportunities relating to every exam. The lectures go so slowly, but she really wants to make sure that you understand the material because the exams are very concept based, and you really need to understand the concepts. Class participation is necessary, but you don't need to attend class. She really cares about students.
THE GOAT OF BIOCHEM! SHE MADE ME LOVE BIOCHEM TO THE POINT WHERE I WANNA MINOR IN IT. THANK YOU BECKY FOR TEACHING ME THE SCIENCE I SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAUGHT YEARS AGO. I LOVE THIS PROF. IT'S A HARD CLASS, BUT GUESS WHAT? YOU HAVE HER SO LEARN AND LISTEN TO HER!
she teaches this subject like people are PhD students sometimes. there is never a break with her, it is always content that just keeps getting harder. the assignments she has are insanely mundane and this class alone will take up a couple hours of work per day if you want to do better than a B.
The level of difficulty of the iClicker questions/ homework questions do not match the exam questions. Exams will have significantly harder questions that you'll just be seeing for the first time, and include content that was focused on for a second, if even. She lacks empathy when it comes to personal hardships. I would rather take orgo again.
Professor Miller runs her lectures as if it is a group discussion. She seems confused by most questions asked: I would not be able to tell that she has taught this class for years. Her lectures are slow, boring, and do not align with the exam content. Only take this class if you are required.
Great teacher. It's a tough course but she breaks hard concepts like a pro. She is empathetic and caring. Students who complain about her class don't show up to class/ watch lectures yet expect to get an A. Biochem is hard you have to study, go to SI sessions and take school seriously. Take her if you want to learn and LISTEN TO HER!
Lecture style is incredibly lengthy and verbose while still communicating very little actual material. You're much better off ignoring lecture recordings entirely and studying solely the posted slideshows and homework assignments. You're also bound to lose points on each test since there are usually some questions that were not covered at all.
Far too concerned with interpersonal education and group discussion; the focus on peer communication detracted from the amount of material actually conveyed in lecture. Exams were often more in-depth than any previous lecture, homework, or practice questions.
Becky truly is one of the nicest and most caring professors I've ever had! The only issue I have with her class is the fact her exams were not anything above a 75%. To be honest, I don't see how a professor can be okay with that considering that shows the majority of the class is struggling. SUCH hard exam questions, read carefully.
Her slides and lectures are more concise and understandable than what the internet can provide, which can lull you into a sense that the class is too easy and boring. But stay vigilant! Her explanations may be simple, but the material is tough when you try to put it all together. Take her explanations as gospel and you'll do very well in her class.
One of the most disingenuous professors I have experienced at UMass. I took her course 2 years ago and can confidently say that her teaching is awful. Her exams are incredibly difficult, and she offers no sort of empathy. Averages shouldn't be in the 70%'s! She needs to know that having a PhD doesn't make her a good professor. Would not recommend.
Just another bad UMass professor. Exam questions written poorly. Expected things she never/barely taught, when it came to certain details. Petty and sloppy grader. Gave me 0 for a question that was correct. gave points back but still. No problem sending the class an email about how her weekend was but can't manage to teach for some reason
No idea what's up with the reviews, she was really great. Super low workload and she outlines the material well in lectures. The exams are on the harder side of things, you need to be able to use the concepts in application type questions, but if you kept up reasonably it shouldn't be terrible. Very kind and gives lots of extra cred opportunities
This class can either be done traditionally, or asynchronous (following the lecture recordings), but all exams are in-person. Pay close attention to her spoken words, since the slides are always available online after class. Exams involve thinking beyond what is learned in class and applying reason but are not too difficult. Lots of extra credit.
voice is kind of annoying and she's redundant
Her exams r sooooo difficult. In lecture, I will understand what's going on, but on the exam, the questions r so niche and specific. she always contradicts herself so then u have no idea what she means. her exam averages are 70s, which shouldnt be good.
She's a good lecturer in that she's easy to follow, but expects you to apply concepts to exams in a way that's hard to prepare for in terms of multiple choice. The class activities matter for open response! Go in person, pay attention. The iClickers are helpful. Overall, not bad but definitely could be better. I wish I learned more in depth.
She is considerate of student needs and presents material in a straightforward way. This class can be difficult if you don't have prior knowledge of proteins / metabolism, as the exam averages are ~70. This class does NOT go in adequate depth to prepare you for the MCAT. You do not learn any intermediates / enzymes, just net reactions.
She does not explain things well at all. She assumes we know background without explaining it prior and doesn't care to explain background context in class. Her practice exams are easy, yet the exams are impossible. They are so specific and so niche its very discouraging. I study so much yet my scores and many others aren't reflect of that.
Becky cares about her students and gives lots of opportunities to succeed. While concepts are hard, she makes sure to address every question or misunderstanding. Definitely recommend for BioChem.
I would not listen to her lectures at all. Use any and all outside resources and you will be fine, just don't rely on her for any information.
Decent class, not particularly hard for the subject matter. Extra credit opportunities for every exam. 1 homework assignment and class activity per week. Lecture attendance can be done in person or asynchronously. She is very nice and wants you to learn the material.
I thought she was a great teacher, some of her lectures were repetitive if you're a bio/chem personShe did talk very slow, but she always posted echo360 recordings. Attendence required, but you could get them asynchronously. The exams were hard, but she gave a resources for what to study and it wasn't too difficult to get a good grade on them
Dr. Miller is a very good and thorough professor, with her lectures being very good. 60% of the grade is exams, which are very hard (the other 40% of the grade is an easy 100 though). She does offer loads of extra credit (up to 11% on exam 1 and 2). To get an A on the exam you have to have a complete understanding of basically everything.
Many reviews on here don't reflect the structure of this course. Lectures are very thorough and she gives so many opportunities to practice with questions very similar to those on exams. You can tell she cares about students and wants them to succeed. Do the work and you'll be totally fine in this course.
