Diba is the best georgetown econ professor. take him!
Best Econ teacher at Georgetown.
Great teacher. Explains concepts well.
Goes through econ at a good pace. Clear lecturer, and gives the right amount of work.
goes slow, easy to follow; tests are difficult tho
the best econ professor at Georgetown. Teaches well and doesn't kill your interest in economics like some other econ profs do. Exams are fairly easy, but if you are tired, you are bound to make stupid mistakes that will cost you that A.
One of the best profs. I have had. He lectures in a way that is impossible not to understand, and can be funny at times. Bravo.
TAKE THIS CLASS. Diba's lectures are boring and the material is generally hard, but he will clear up any confusion u r having by going over 1 concept for 2 whole classes. Exams are pretty easy. Recitations are mandatory and TAs suck at helping u.
The best macro teacher by far - made up for the semester from hell w/ arik...diba tells the cutest stories
one of the best econ. prof in the departement. we know we all love diba
As an SFSer who struggled with econ, Diba was a great professor to have. He is not particularly easy and his tests can be tricky but he is so helpful and kind it makes up for it. He is fair and really helpful in office hours - if you put the effort in (even if econ isnt your thing) youll do fine.
One of GU's best econ professors. Clearly articulates textbook's concepts in lecture and relates them to the real world. Fair exams. But TA's can barely speak English, so don't expect much help from them.
Great professor, lectures are very clear, but the final was VERY HARD! study for it...
Really good prof who explains everything really well. TAs are knowledgeable and fair. There are a few quizzes taken in recitation but they're really easy. Midterm is okay, but the final is completely impossible. Luckily, everyone fails it so it really doesn't hurt your grade.
He's the best econ teacher in the world although his lectures can be kinda boring. but he's much better than all the other teachers. his exams are not too bad if you study and the homework and quizzes are pretty easy and straightforward.
I didn't notice anything great about him at all. His lectures are unbearingly dull, he repeats himself over and over again and never actually EXPLAINS himself. So impersonal, definatley would not reccommend.
Super easy and very clear
definitely knows his stuff and is able to apply it to the real world. take good notes, skim the textbook, and you'll be fine.
IPEC major: repeats a lot, none of lecture on exam, all applications, everybody came out of the final exam looking like someone shot their dog, BUT i love diba, hes such a nice, sometimes funny, character, my grades prob gonna suck, hes a prof that smiles at his students when he sees them around cam
Don't really have to read the book if you listen to his lectures and take good notes which is very helpful. However, tests are pretty hard with lots of applications and tricky questions. But Diba explains stuff really well.
I took Diba for macro econ, and I would definitely recommend him for this class. he has the cutest accent, and explains a lot of concepts pretty well (he tends to repeat himself a lot). The exams are hard, but easy quizzes and homeworks in recitations help your grade. Very easygoing and will randomly make jokes during lecture.
He is a good lecturer, all you have to do is write what is on the board. The tests are insanely hard, but then again so is Economics. The quizzes are easy if you have a cool TA like I did.
Great teacher- gives example problems in class & repeats alot. So the class is a little boring (don't hold that against him it's econ). Youll learn the material well. Tests are hard b/c the multiple choice is tricky (read over your answers!) The setup of the class is nice-even if you do badly on the midterm you can recover your grade w/the final
Prof. Diba explains the concepts very well through his lectures. His exams are straight foward though the multiple choice questions can really screw you over. Put in the time and you will learn something interesting
I loved this little Persian man. He made me switch my major to IPEC and I absolutely adored his class. Take him at all costs!
He's clear and nice! Always deals with a lot of out-of-book materials and that makes students absorb in the class. He also claims he is an academic grandson of Keynes since he was educated in Cambridge under one of the Keynes' students :)
Diba's a great teacher, explaining many concepts a lot clearer than the textbook, and really covering the material well, and I say this as someone who despises economics. The midterm and final are tricky because of the multiple choice, it can really screw you so know your stuff well. Definitely recommended.
This was the worst class I have taken at Georgetown. Diba was not only unhelpful, but rude, arrogant, and an unfair/hard grader
clear, simple, easy.
I go to Michigan and took this as a summer class. Diba is a very good teacher who knows how to address students' questions. The exams were well-formatted. I really enjoyed this course because the class was small enough to accomodate questions and discussion. Go Blue!
very good econ professor. lectures were clear and his grading policy was fair. econ is hard, but he makes it bearable. he also makes jokes that are kind of corny but he's so cute you cant help but laugh!
Diba is the man. He's one of my fav. professors at Gtown, and he's hilarious. Anyone who calls him rude and an "unfair grader" is an idiot (especially because the TAs grade, not Diba). TAKE HIM
Diba is a great professor, and that is coming from someone who left the SFS for the College because of econ. A funny lecturer, make sure you practice what he teaches or you'll be screwed on the midterm and final. The tests will challenge you so listen to what he says.
I love this man. Take him.
Great lecturer, tests not too hard
Great guy, very approachable. Macro is hard but he explains everything and cracks jokes to keep you awake. TA's grade everything. Attendance not mandatory but if you don't go you won't do well.
not as great as I had hoped. Very mediocre. Boring lectures were hard to stay awake, though he is clear. He writes everything you need to know on the board. Not bad, but definitely not at good as I had expected based on the other comments below.
awesome professor! funny, interesting. it's econ, so it's not going to be easy, but way better than i expected. "De consuumma prrice index" (you'll understand when you take the class.
Diba is very funny, making his class interesting enough to keep you awake. He explains everything really clearly, and repetitively, and will tell you exactly what you need to know for the tests. Great class.
OVERRATED!!! His class is barely comprehensible although the subject is not that hard. Does allow a cheat sheet for the midterm and final so that indeed helps.
great professor
OVER-RATED. In my experience, the people who love this class are Econ majors and because they all take the class, the curve is pretty high, which sucks. Diba is adorable and intelligent (obviously) but he over-complicates the material for an intro-level class. It's pretty much essential to learn everything in the book + memorize lecture notes.
I really like Diba, hes very interested and excited about the material which makes class interesting. Tests really arent too bad but its all graded on the bell curve so your final grade essentially depends on how everyone else does but any thing in the B range curved to A-/A. Definitely best option for macro.
Definitely overrated, but he is still your best option for Macroeconomics. The class itself isn't hard but you have to pay attention during class which is harder than it seems. It's easy to get distracted and he repeats himself a lot during lecture. At the end of the day though, it's still Econ, so it's still going to be fairly boring in my opinion
he explains everything really well, easy - and i'm not an econ major. just have to pay attention in class and review he practice sets and prevoius tests. do the practice problems in the textbook! don't really have to read the book (but the reading's not that bad).
OVER-RATED. Diba is adorable but unless you've had macro before (or are an econ major) don't take him. The class average for the final was a failing grade--shouldn't the bulk of the class have been able to pass if they had been properly prepared by the professor? Ummmm...Yeah.
Diba really is overrated. His teaching style puts you to sleep and he doesn't motivate us to work hard. If you are in MSB and have to take Macro, Diba might be a fit since he puts a lot of business-related problems on the finals. It's econ don't worry about who you have, it is all curved anyway
Fantastic lecturer. Explains concepts very clearly and relates material to present economic situation. Tells you what will and won't be on the test.
Nice, funny man. Awesome accent. Attend class since all his notes are from the board. Concepts can be unclear sometimes and hard to understand but he's helpful. TAs generally suck. Midterm didn't reflect material well but the final was very fair. Overall a good class that is curved. Recitation mandatory. He tries to help you out with grades.
take him for macro. by the way he teaches you how to be a boss along with econ.
DO NOT TAKE FOR INTERMEDIATE! No help on letting you know how to prepare for midterm or final, no class time spent on review and new practice problems or review sheets given. Median grade for midterm is 52, no guidance on how to study or what to know, these are glaring flaws for an econ professor. AVOID AT ALL COST FOR INTERMEDIATE LEVEL MACRO!
Awful for intermediate macro. He tests us on things that he mentions once in class and gives no guidance as to what the midterm and final will look like. Gives MyEconLab weekly in addition to recitation homework that must be handed in to TA's (who are just as clueless as the rest of the class). Worst class I've taken at Georgetown.
Good for intermediate macro. Easy hw, hard tests but there's a big curve. Powerpoints are clear and useful.
Nice and funny person, but intermediate macro was a nightmare, mainly because of exams (problem sets/hm reasonable). Exams IMPOSSIBLE to study for, averages were in the 50s.
Professor Diba is a really nice guy, talks about his kids now and then, and tells some good stories. He can be a little hard to follow at times but he's always more than happy to slow down and say things more than once. I hope I get to take another class with him.
His lectures are boring and hard to follow. Spends more time telling you things you don't need to know for the final than what you will actually be tested on. Did not learn anything in class.
Real solid for such a boring class. Dude makes it real clear whats going on and if you go to class, you're guaranteed the B+
He's not afraid to delve deep into subjets. Once in a while, he'll tag content as "non-test material". You'll be free to doze off or pay attention if you're interested. The tests are brutal, but they're just meant to spread a meaningful curve, you'll be fine.
Prof Diba is as easy to understand as they come. Not an easy class, but not unreasonable. If you have an interest in the stuff and are willing to put in some work, you're in good shape.
He is excited about his subject. His lectures are interesting and he really does care about your learning. However, the exam is not easy.
Diba is good if you actually like econ (particularly the math side) but rather meh if doing it for requirements. The TA is usually more helpful. Tests are hella hard unless your a genius like me but are curved the crap out of. Almost fell asleep in lecture a lot because his tone of voice is sleepy, I knew the material, and it was late afternoon.
Professor Diba is definitely knowledgeable and if you ask him specific questions or go to his office hours he can explain to you what you need to know. In his lectures, which were boring and drag on, he included superfluous information that we were never tested on. The class was easy, though, but probably just because the TA was an easy grader.
Prof. Diba is a great choice for any macroecon class. The subject is difficult, but he explains the underlying concepts far more clearly than any textbook will. That being said, if you want to do well in his classes, it is not enough to only attend his lectures--going to his office hours will substantially improve your grade. Also, has amazing TAs.
Lectures were OK, he lightly expands off his ppt. 90% of your grade is tests, so study hard! Everything is accessible online. His tests (2) are very difficult, but his quizzes (2) are almost exactly like the HW. His TAs are amazing, and work hard to help you understand. They grade your tests too. Cheat sheets allowed for tests. Didn't use textbook.
Go to his office hours, he is amazing at explaining things one on one. The homework is hard to do and the TA's explanations are often not the best. The class is on a curve like every other econ class so if you want to get an A/A-, you have to work for it but a B+ is pretty much guaranteed. Beware the final because it's 40% of your grade.
Prof Diba is a very caring professor, but his lectures are kind of boring. You don't really have to come to class (which he tells you) but during class he'll tell you what isn't on the exams, which is like half of each powerpoint. Solid choice for a required major class.
Diba is a solid choice for Intermediate Macro. He is very clear about what you're expected to know and what you're not expected to know, and he holds office hours twice a week for multiple answers, so he's very available. That being said, the class, by it's very nature, is difficult. His tests really stretch the course material, so learn it well.
He's funny but half of his lectures are on topics he says we don't need to know for his class. Wish he would've stuck to what would be on the tests more because they could be hard to predict. Decent curve though so it's not hard to get an A. He also lets you use notes on every test and quiz. His TAs were pretty bad though.
Nice, funny guy, however, found the class to be very difficult. In hs, I took AP micro and macro, really enjoyed econ. Now I dread it. The homeworks are tough (completion grade though) and the quizzes and midterms are formatted like the homeworks. You have to understand how to answer the questions rather than content to do well in class
Your grade is based on HW (15%), 2 online quizzes (20%), midterm (25%) and final (40%). It's easy to get 100% on HW (problem sets are graded on completion and MyEconLab is easy) and the 2 quizzes are identical to MyEconLab. Lectures were unnecessary. The midterm was hard (median was 57), but the curve is generous. The final was somewhat easier.
Homework is easy, all the powerpoints are posted online. Sometimes he's more specific about what will be on the exams while lecturing. The curves are brutal and only ten questions on quizzes but it gets you past the intro-level courses in Econ at least.
Diba is very knowledgable, but the course itself was extremely difficult. The course consisted of him showing up to class, lecturing for an hour and fifteen minutes, and leaving. The tests are absolutely brutal, but the curve helps a little bit. I honestly would not recommend taking ECON003, it's harder and gives you a lesser understanding of Econ.
Took 003 in Fall19. The class is fast paced, so go to lectures (not mandatory). Quizzes/tests are on lectures and handout notes, but the textbook helps ALOT when preparing for quizzes and tests bc the questions are more complex and combine diff concepts. Huge curve, graded on a bellcurve- top10%: A, next 30%: A-,etc. Easy A if you put in the effort
Professor Diba himself is nice and tries to be a good professor. However, the lectures and slides are verbatim what the text book says and the homework is very easy and not too much work. The tests and quizzes on the other hand are insanely hard. It's like in math when the homework is 2+24 and then the test is calculus. So that is frustrating
Diba is kind and clearly knowledgable about economics. Accessible at office hours. However, he just reads off of slides straight off the textbook and that is all. Pretty funny though. Be aware theres a recitation.
Professor Diba's lectures are somewhat dry and typically mirror the slides and textbook, but he throws in relevant current events and humor. Diba provides multiple opportunities to ask questions outside of class. Exams and quizzes are very challenging, but reading through the textbook and fully understanding the homework sets helps.
This class is an easy A if you read and take notes from the book. His lectures are just repeating the book and I found that the textbook did a better job to explain the material. The tests/quizzes aren't that hard if you understand the material from the textbook and make a good cheat sheet. HW is easy. Easy A if you are willing to read the book.
STAY AWAY. Just take Econ 001 and 002, better option. Professor Diba doesn't teach and expects you to know complex ideas that go beyond the scope of the class. Generous curve, but mean score for tests is commonly around 55-60%. Not worth getting out of intro level Econ classes.
This is a more of a warning against econ-003. there is a disconnect between understanding the content and doing well on tests. I failed my final and did poorly on the tests but got a B-. One benefit of Econ in general is the very generous curve, but that curve exists in the other classes. I'd stay away from this class; don't risk your gpa for it.
unless you're an econ major, econ 003 is not worth it - don't do it. the curriculum has way too much content and is impossible to keep up with. diba is okay, a kind guy who is always willing to help, but his lectures are just so dry.
Diba's a great guy & super funny, but even coming from an A student who received top scores on multiple of his exams, ECON 003 is a bit unnecessarily difficult and might tank your GPA if you aren't invested in econ/the class. Definitely make a good cheat sheet, but also have a good understanding of the recitation homework. The curve will save you.
Love Diba. But avoid ECON 003 and take 001 + 002. The multiple choices will be hard.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU HAVE ANOTHER OPTION. I went to lectures, read the entire textbook, did practice problems, and still failed two exams. The questions on tests do not accurately test knowledge of the material. Lectures are boring and hard to follow. Cried too much over this class. Do not take unless you are really invested in econ.
Professor Diba is great! Beware, however: His class is difficult. I wish I had started visiting him in office hours much sooner than I did. Although his lectures can be challenging to stay focused, he is genuinely caring and motivational if you take the time to know him outside the classroom.
Professor Diba is a good choice for Intermediate Macro. Just know that his style of teaching is such that the class is not based in Calculus as much as it probably should be. His office hours are very helpful, and he is a good lecturer. Make sure you go to every lecture, and do not fall behind.
Worst class I took at Georgetown, Lectures are bland, not interesting and did not help with tests. Test content does not always match the content taught in class or in the textbook or practice exams. Only do well if you have prior economic experience. TAs and the professor were not helpful or informative.
Tough class - lecture style is quite boring and its hard to pay attention even when you attend. Exam content would always only be loosely based on what was taught in class and was unnecessarily difficult
Extremely dry lectures, basically just reads off the slides. He's very calm and easy-going, a bit helpful during office hours. I also find him quite funny. The class is definately manageable since it is introductory, especially if you have a good TA that can animate and better explain the lectures.
So confusing. boring and dry. grading is weird. honestly don't know what happened in this class. waste of time. take trade or iecon if hes teaching
Professor Diba is a solid lecturer who makes the dry subject matter more bearable. I did not put in enough effort at first, resulting in an awful midterm score and ultimately a B+ for the semester despite a top-quartile score on the final. Stay on top of the material and you'll be fine. TAs this year were unhelpful but that's the luck of the draw.
Professor Diba's lectures are dry, which does not bode well with the amount of content the course covers. Tests are manageable, but you have to study hard for them. Professor Diba makes himself very available and is quite helpful outside of class.
Professor Diba is not the most engaging lecturer, but he has his funny moments. He is clearly very accomplished in his field. This class is pretty boring but a good way to combine intro econ courses if your willing to accept a little damage to your GPA.
Professor Diba is so far advanced from intro to econ, that his explanations often lack the basic economic understanding you would need to reason through his test questions. Redo all the old quizzes, homeworks, tests, etc.; a lot of questions on exams are just derivatives of these. 1003 requires a lot of effort and studying outside the class.
Pretty dry standard econ prof who uses slides but he has his moments. Graded on 2 quizzes, a midterm, and final which were mostly formatted like past examples. HW is fake, just go to his office hours. Honestly worth skipping 1001 and 1002 with all the horror stories you hear about them. I didnt use the textbook at all, just look at his slides.
A somewhat dry lecturer, but very nice. Allows you to have a page of formulas/notes while testing, which was a lifesaver. Exams were moderately difficult, but you can get by with studying HW/old exams. Curve helped too. Really glad I took 1003 instead of suffering through 1001/1002.
Professor Diba is nice and very accessible but the class is literally impossible. If u have no prior econ experience it is so hard to keep up because there is so much content and he goes so fast. His tests are so hard too If you take him good luck you're gonna need it
Super nice and funny guy. That said, he is not a very good lecturer and tends to leave material that will be on the test out of his notes. Definitely prioritize studying the homework.
Avoid taking this class if possible. The curriculum is muddled and unclear, with tests and lectures mostly being unrelated. Even entering the class with previous experience in economics, I was lost and test questions rarely made sense. Lectures are dry and difficult to pay attention to.
