Tries hard but is really hard to understand.
Awesome TA, discussion helped me get through IB 150
Professor Clegg is really excited about his subject but his teaching style is not very engaging. The class was also a little disorganized and he took over a month to get exam grades back. The discussions were completely pointless and the material was a little difficult for a 100-level class. Would not recommend.
Amazing teacher! He is so passionate in what he is teaching and you learn a lot from him. Easy tests, and easy class over all! RECOMMEND!
Really easy class! you have to go to class for iClickers, but as long as you go to 70% of classes you get a 100% in attendance. Easy tests as long as you review the material. Usually curved. no textbook, the final is not cumulative.
Extremely helpful and nice. I really enjoyed the class. It is a lot of work, so if you have no interest in the subject I wouldn't recommend it. If you enjoy the subject of biology then this class would be perfect for you.
Be warned, No dinosaurs until after 8 weeks. The first half of the class is insufferable, but the second half is really cool. Ben Clegg can be a bit confusing and can go off on tangents, but he's a sweetheart and SO knowledgable. If you can stick it through the evolution of time, then I would recommend this course. Also, study: I went from C+ to A-
Awesome professor! Prodigiously talented in both intelligence and passion. Kind and accommodating - I had a small conflict with an exam and he allowed me to take it in his office at a later date, no problem. You will learn so much and be captivated no matter your major. He cares for your input and made me consider switching to IB! TAKE THIS CLASS
Awesome professor! RECOMMEND
Ben is a great professor. His class isn't hard and the topic is somewhat interesting. The tests are pretty easy if you just review the lecture slides that he posts online. This class is easy so don't take if you like a huge challenge.
He's a great professor. The exams are based on the lecture slides. Lectures are not mandatory but there are iclicker questions. Discussions are worth 39% of your course grade. The class is very easy. There are weekly pre-discussion videos and questions to answer. There is only one research project in this course. Extra credit is offered.
Great Professor! Take the class! Would recommend saving it for senior year so you can kick back and relax for the semester!
So down to earth. Wants you to love the subject instead of worrying about points. Offers tons of extra credit and will sacrifice all his time to help you
Great class to take freshman year. It provides a different perspective on biology and Ben is a great professor! However, if you really want to pass, I suggest going to office hours and studying outside of lecture as some of the material has a lot of content to cover.
He was very into teaching and would really spend time with the students during office hours explaining a certain concept. If you really show up during lecture and finish off all the work, there's no reason not to get good grades.
class is super easy just the test are kind of hard so study and go over notes.
Good!
Although Dr. Clegg's lectures can seem confusing at times, he is a great teacher who is willing to invest all of his time into his students. He is very passionate about Biology and wants to ensure that everyone understands the material taught. If you do the Learning Goals before each Hour Exam, you'll do well on his tests. Lots of extra credit too.
Clegg literally jumps at the chance to help his students. He is a good teacher because of his great passion for biology and he really cares about his students whether he knows their names or not. He is a really good guy. On the negative side, he can occasionally ramble and his lectures can be a tad confusing.
Very great professor! My fellows all admire him a lot. Clarity and efficiency!
He is a good professor. Enthusiastic and clearly enjoys the subject he teaches. If you need any help, office hours are very useful and he hold review sessions before all of the tests. Tests are fairly easy, and he usually drops a question or two. Due to the nearly 80 extra credit1000 total points, it is pretty easy to get a good grade as well.
Sooo nice! Tests aren't particularly hard if you review the prelectures and lecture powerpoints. Extra credit galore. And very enthusiastic about what he teaches! I'm sad that I'll likely never have him again, and I actually wish I had gone to office hours to get to know him better. Only bad part is grading can be harsh on experimental design stuff
Dr. Clegg was such a great professor. He makes the class pretty easy. Do the extra credit, it adds up to around 75 points. I blew off the last test and final and still got an A. Don't forget to do the learning catalytics and homework though. They definitely boost your grade. Overall great, and interesting class.
Ben is great!!!! Very generous with extra credit. Tests are reasonable, but be sure to study. Online homework is pretty easy, lots of answers can be found on Quizlet and other webpages. Highly recommend him. Wish I could have another class just like this one.
Great teacher. Loads of extra credit, easy online homework. Tests are fair if you study.
I loved Ben! He truly knows the subject he's teaching and is super eager to make sure we understand everything. Toughness is average, and it's not hard to get a good grade if you put in the effort. His office hours are great, and you can tell he's wants us to learn, which is great. He cares more about our learning than just points.
Easier than AP bio, and the final has a generous curve. My raw score was a solid B, and with the curve it went up to a solid A
It is easy class. There's a lot of chances for extra credit. I got 75 for my first exam and 80 for my final, but still managed to get an A.
great. helps with whatever you need. will always be available. even if the class is hard, you'll be okay as long as you put some effort in.
The class can be a little difficult but the professor goes above and beyond to make sure each student receives the help that he/she needs to pass. Obvious that he is very passionate and knowledgable about the subject. Takes student feedback into consideration. Phenomenal professor.
Clegg is a funny man, very energetic and obviously passionate about biology. His test are nothing like his slides, notes, etc. They are mostly critical thinking problems which makes them extremely difficult and confusing. Some would say this is a blow off class, I beg to differ.
There's a decent amount of online homework , which can be tedious but is pretty easy and boosts your grade. There's extra credit every week to make up for when you forget an assignment or skip lecture. Clegg does review sessions before every test and if you go you're pretty much guaranteed to do well on the test.
He is a great lecturer and he really cares that every student understand the material. Before every test, he did a study session that lasted until the last student left. He gives feedback extremely quickly (in less than a week). This is great, especially considering that he has over 600 students! I'd definitely take another course offered by him.
A really great teacher. Made difficult concepts easy to understand for all levels of ability. He also holds 6 hour study sessions the weekend before the test, and stays until every last question is answered -- he's really committed to making sure students understand the material, not just get the grade.
Really passionate about what he was teaching, made lecture really interesting. Not super difficult material, but he's one of those teachers who wants you to apply concepts on the test rather than just recite material, so you need a really strong foundation to do well. Pretty easy intro course though, not hugely challenging.
Clegg is a great professor who makes bio fun and easy. He also really cares about his students. One time, I accidentally overslept an exam and panicked so I immediately went to his office hour, but Clegg was understanding and let me take the take the exam at that moment.
Amazing professor. Can get a B average on all the midterms+final and still easily get an A with the hw and participation points. ALSO DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. He really cares about all of his students doing well and understanding the material. Would Recommend for sure.
he knows the content really well. office hours are great for extra help.
Best teacher I had this semester! He is very approachable, is generous with extra credit, holds review sessions for every exam (including final), and is passionate about the subject. There's a decent amount of busy work but it's well worth the easy points to buffer your grade. Just overall a solid professor.
Genuinely cool guy and fun lecturer. Plenty of lecture activities to demonstrate concepts and is actually fun to talk to outside of lecture. Very fair with exam questions, just do the homework and pay attention
Clegg is nice guy who is very passionate about biology and explains things very clearly.
Large lecture consisting of near 600 students (Clegg teaches as to not leave ANY behind; very slow)
Ben is a really cool guy. Lectures can get a little boring, but he tries 100% to keep the giant class interested and connected to the class. He highly recommends the textbook, but personally I never touched it and still got an A- in the class. You can feel how passionate he is in the way he teaches and how he treats every student with respect.
Clegg talks really fast, and definitely deserves the spot to teach. Prepare to learn more about life than you thought you could, because this was the hardest class I had ever taken. If you work hard, and truly understand what you are learning, and do the extra credit, you should get an A. Prepare well for his exams and learn outside of class too.
He cares a lot about his students. However his lectures are kind of confusing. I never used the text book for this class but I heard he requires Mastering Biology now.
ben clegg is an amazing professor, very talented. kinda obsessed w him tbh. the class was difficult in my opinion as nothing is about reciting material when it comes to the test, you need a very strong basis in order to apply the information on exams. hopefully im praying for a c. requires access code to mastering bio
Super thankful to have had Ben as a professor. Hes super passionate and makes class very interesting. Anyone who likes bio will love this class. Defintely deserves more than one pepper on the hot scale.
I'm really glad to have had him this semester, he's a pretty good professor. Despite the huge lecture size, he does a good job of making it seem smaller. Additionally, the exams for this class are application-based and can be somewhat difficult; however, there's lots of extra credit and resources to get help. Overall, I'd definitely recommend him.
Prof. Clegg is an excellent lecturer who tries to make learning the material as interesting as possible, but his lecture activities can sometimes be hard to follow. The exams are pretty difficult, but there is a lot of padding and extra credit and a nice resurrection policy. I got Cs on my first 2 exams and managed to get an A in the course.
Professor Clegg is the most caring professor I have even had. He gives so many opportunities for success in his class. To get a good grade show up to lectures to receive clicker points, do all of the homework because it is a huge chunk of the grade, and go to TA office hours.
IB 150 is supposed to be the easiest bio ever, but it did not feel that way. I put in so much work, did all the EC/HW/readings, and studied like crazy to end up with an A-. He was good, but his TA's aren't the best. The set-up of the course is also irritating. He himself is a good and knowledgable guy nonetheless.
Ben Clegg is not a good professor at all. His lectures are very boring and make no sense. This unit, I did not attend a single lecture and still did well on the exam. The one time I went to lecture, I did not get anything out of it and left like it was a waste of my time. He does a terrible job at explaining concepts.
IB150 is in fact the easiest one comparing to all the other MCB courses I have taken. If you have taken AP biology or other bio courses in high school this course should not be a problem. Plus, even if you already know most of the knowledge you could still gain something new as he uses interesting examples. His learning strategies are great!
Did not really learn anything new in this class. If you have an AP Bio background, you are basically set to breeze through the course. I did not particularly like the way lectures and discussions were set up, but they were not the death of me, either. Just be sure to do the practice exams and go over the learning objectives/goals before each exam.
Great teacher and really shows that he cares about his students. Willing to meet with you outside of office hours if you need extra help. Gives tons of extra credit to help boost grades. Exams are hard but he makes it clear what he expects to be known. Be ready to put in work, though!
Professor Clegg is amazing, he takes time for every student that needs it. He is one of the rare few that actually cares about every single student's success. If you get a chance to take the James Scholar section, do it, because the Professor teaches your discussion section. I can't emphasize enough how good of a teacher he is.
Professor Clegg is a really great teacher, and it's obvious that he cares about all his students. He's super enthusiastic about biology, and can give good explanations to any questions you may have. The class isn't easy, but there is a lot of extra credit given, and you get a lot of points just for showing up to class. Overall, a solid professor.
Clegg will be a professor I will remember forever because he genuinely cares about his students. IB 150 is a decently tough class but he makes it more bearable. He gives a lot of extra credit and gets excited when students do well on tests. Highly recommend taking any classes with Clegg
Dr. Clegg is an amazing professor who is really passionate about the course that he teaches. The course was very well structured. Although the course mainly covers basic biology topics taught in high school, lectures are still really interesting and the questions he asks in lectures makes you think about these topics from a different perspective.
He's great one on one but he kind of sucks if you only go to lectures. If you meet him for office hours or take it JS like I did, you'll love him. He's very caring and wants to see you succeed, he's not just there for his own research.
Professor Clegg is one of those professors who really cares for your success. His lectures are mandatory but they help a lot. He talks fast sometimes but it's just because he is super passionate about biology. His course demands that you put work outside of class if you want to receive a good grade. He's also hard to catch during office hours.
Dr. Clegg is one of the best professors I have had. He is very passionate about teaching and biology, which made me excited to come to lectures. The way he structures his class allows you to actually understand the material, instead of just memorizing facts. Overall, Dr. Clegg genuinely cares about his students both academically and personally.
Very knowledgable professor. Show up to lecture and do all assignments and you'll be fine. Seemed a little department driven, as if he were simply going off a script. He's very clear about what will be on exams, no curveballs
Genuinely good professor and person overall. I only struggle in his class because my high school did a poor job of teaching me the material we were supposed to know prior to this class. However, he does provide you with plenty of resources if this is the case.
Dr. Clegg is an outstanding professor and a great person. His class is well run, and he prepares you well for his exams through his learning targets/ objectives. You can tell he is a genuine person, that cares about his students, and has a passion for education. He has really accessible office hours as well.
Dr. Clegg is a very nice man, but an incredibly ineffective professor. His lectures are often incoherent, ambiguous and convoluted. He very frequently takes simple concepts and makes them very difficult to understand. The TAs in this class know almost nothing about the topic, and are incredibly difficult to work with.
This class really is amazing! Ben knows how to teach and is really passionate about bio. When I am in lecture I genuinely stay focused and try to understand the material, not just memorize it. He is one of the very few teachers who cares about their students and more importantly believes that they can succeed. He is a fantastic professor!!!!!!
I LOVED going to class. He is so enthusiastic and loves to teach. He makes you love the class and content. 10/10 guy
Great guy who genuinely cares about and believes in his students. Lectures were always interesting to me and the binder keeps you involved. But decent amount of homework and tests can be kind of difficult. Best advice is redo the practice weekly homework a couple times and take the practice exam before the real exam. Its definitely doable!
This class was the hardest thing I've ever done and Dr. Clegg will make you work hard but in the end it's totally worth it. He has the grading scale set up in a way that you have room to make mistakes and learn - I came out with almost an A+ in the class, even after failing the first exam. Definitely my favorite class so far.
He really wants his students to succeed.
The only thing I don't like about Clegg is that sometimes the lectures don't completely follow the given handouts in the course binder, and sometimes the homework is unnecessarily difficult. Otherwise, he is a great professor who explains concepts thoroughly and makes sure we actually understand the material. The tests are very straightforward.
Ben is an amazing professor and lecturer. He is very passionate about his students and what he is teaching. He tests are very application-based, but he never throws in any curveballs. He only expects you to understand what you were taught in class, or else he will give you background information on the question.
I had him for IB 150 this year. The class itself wasn't too hard, but he offered lots of extra credit if your grade was low. He genuinely cared for his students and wanted them to succeed.
Please make sure you know the learning goals! Very very important in order to pass the test. The TA's are phenomenal during office hours (please use them if you need help! highly recommended) There's online homework due every week and after each test, go to lecture bc he'll give out extra credit in a quiz format. Ben is super passionate
Ben is an extremely caring professor. He's here to support you and make sure you are doing everything to the best of your abilities. There is weekly homework which is often difficult, but between him and his TAs, they have office hours mon-fri which are very helpful. He gives a lot of extra credit and cares a lot about his students.
I had Clegg for IB 150 Merit, and I have to say he is one of the best lecturers/teachers/professors I've had. He cares for his students greatly and wants everyone to get an A, but, more importantly, he wants you to be successful later in life. You definitely need to work to do well, but he provides you with everything you need to do so.
Ben genuinely cares about each of his students' development. He tests on overarching concepts (unlike MCB150 with is mostly memorizing details), and during lecture, he walks you through the thought process he wants you to have. Lectures are a must. He gives out a ton of extra credit points (nearly 4% of the entire course grade). Do them all.
Prof Clegg made the class enjoyable and really taught how to understand the material, not just memorization of facts. He was funny and engaging in lectures. He explained concepts well. Office hours and exam prep were very helpful too.
This class is supposed to be a joke but its not. The online lectures sometimes do not explain all the slides provided. Clegg is a great guy and cares for you. He gives a total of 55 points of extra credit total!! Make sure to read the textbook, do the homework BY YOURSELF, and do lots of practice problems. I didn't really need office hours.
He is an amazing teacher. He cares about you and your place in his class. The best example of this: he hosts large exam review sections with up to 200 students on the weekend before a test. He will sit there and answer EVERY question until EVERYONE is satisfied and prepared. You will not find a better teacher.
Do EVERY SINGLE EXTRA CREDIT. This year, if you did all of the extra credit, you could raise your grade by 6.1%. Clegg WANTS you to succeed; I have never met a professor who goes above and beyond like him, and who does things like review sessions before tests until 3am. Also, tests contain a few qs from homework/practice tests.
Dr. Clegg is the most caring professor at UIUC. Before every test, he holds a review session to answer every single person's questions. The last review session lasted from 6pm to 2am. He obviously is passionate about teaching and about making sure every student has the chance to succeed. Truly one of a kind.
Clegg really cares for his students and wants them to do well. He's one of the best professors I've ever had and even though the information was difficult for me, I wish I could take the class again. He offers a lot of extra credit and hosts long review sessions before the exam. Highly recommend him :)
Professor Clegg cares about his students by holding lots of office hours(OH) along with TAs. He even holds every OH before every exam until very late in the morning. Such a responsible and enthusiastic Professor as well as caring TAs! Offering lots of extra credits. Despite mandatory meeting in discussions, the material is fun and interacted.
My favorite professor I have taken so far. His lecture videos tell you exactly what you need to know, and he makes learning the material easy. As for accessibility, he holds review sessions before each exam that last until all the questions are answers. I've stayed on a zoom session with this man from 6 pm to 2 am! Truly dedicated.
prof clegg is super nice and really cares about his students. in review sessions on zoom he was funny as hell and stayed on until 3am just to make sure everyone had their questions answered. the lectures can be long but never too bad. they're pretty interesting. the online HW is really helpful. i didnt use the textbook once don't bother with it
I wish this professor could teach all of my classes. His lectures and content are well put together, he plans ahead, and he goes out of his way for students. Although the class was a bit conceptually difficult, he was always able to explain things in multiple ways. Definitely attend his review sessions! He does the absolute most to benefit students
Professor Clegg was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He wants you to do well and gives your opportunities to do so. He truly wants you to succeed and gives you great tips on how to do so! Loved this class so much IB is my major now!
Every student deserves to have a professor like Dr. Clegg. I wish all professors were as dedicated and cared as much about their students as he does. His exam review sessions that go until 2 am are legendary. You have to put in the work to learn the material, but you truly do learn. I'd take another class with him in a heartbeat.
Hands down the most caring, helpful, and kind professors at UIUC. I am so sad he only teaches this one class. The exams are very conceptual, this isn't a memorization based course. Cherish Clegg, you will never have another professor as amazing as him again!
Honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had. Goes out of his way in order for his students to not only succeed, but actually understand and learn the topics.
Professor Clegg is the best professor Ive had. He genuinely cares about the students, and is extremely friendly. He replies fast to emails, even with hundreds of students. He makes class very interesting and is a great lecturer. He takes the time to hand grade over 600 tests as well, so you see he really cares. I would absolutely recommend Clegg!
Dr. Clegg is one of the best profs at UIUC. He puts so much time and effort to ensure that his students thoroughly comprehend concepts. He genuinely wants students to do well. He holds review sessions and office hours. He goes above and beyond! Tip: he is not a regurgitate prof, you NEED to understand concepts. Overall, I had a great experience!
This man is the most caring and helpful professor/teacher I've ever had. He's constantly encouraging and giving out advice. The exam info section saved my life. If you have the opportunity, do yourself a favor and take his class.
He focuses on your ability to apply your understanding of a concept so be prepared to come across examples you haven't discussed in class. Homework is harder than exams. He hosts long study sessions before the exams that are very helpful, he'll thoroughly talk about every concept. He gives out A LOT of extra credit so make sure to do it.
Clegg was AMAZING for IB150. Absolutely take! I didn't study for his tests at all and only went to his legendary review sessions the night before and got an A on all 3. I also did all 55 points worth of extra credit which is a ton considering the course is out of 1000 points. The man is legendary and is easily the nicest, most caring professor ever
You can tell how much Clegg cares about his students. The class would be better in person, but it is what it is. His review sessions last for hours, he answers questions until he physically can't stay awake. The only reason the class is not super easy is because it is online, but he still puts a lot of effort into his lectures. Nicest person.
Ben is currently my favorite professor ever. This class was definitely a learning curve as a freshman, but once you get the hang of it this class can be quite easy. You need to know how to study for his tests, or else you might be stuck with a bad grade. Although, his class is very forgiving and offers a lot of extra credit.
There is a bunch of extra credit opportunity every week through the whole semester. You can put low effort and still do really well in this class because Clegg teaches so well that you don't need to learn anything by yourself.
Professor Cleggs exams were very difficult, but there is a ton of extra credit available. He really cares about his students and is always sending inspirational things to keep us positive. He hosts review sessions that last for 6+ hours.
Clegg is great. Very motivational for preparing for tests and has great exercises and lectures and de-stressing. A genius when it comes to Biology. One thing: he overexplains a lot and is sometimes hard to follow in lectures.
I believe I would take this class again just for the professor. I really enjoyed the content in this course. At times, the questions on tests would be a little confusing, however, I feel like it was really similar to biology offered in high school. There are many extra credit opportunities, so if you complete all of those, it'll help your grade.
Clegg is actually hands down, one of the best professors I've had. Provides a lot of extra credit opportunities, makes it a point that he actually wants us to learn instead of making us memorize information, and shows a lot of care for his students. If you put in the work and effort for this class, you will be successful.
Do the course objectives thoroughly. The class was very fair and you have 3 exams, and 1 optional exam; if it's higher than the average of your 3 exams, he'll replace it. Lots of extra credit. He's very enthusiastic and will spend hours upon hours for reviews and office hours. I didn't really study and I got a B+, study and you'll get an A.
My first class at UIUC. I LOVED Clegg he was so encouraging and if you put in any effort at all he would do the same for you. He had an extreme amount of resources available for students to get extra help. I love clegg
Dr. Clegg is an amazing professor who really cares about the success of his students. The passion he has for biology is evident and contagious. Im so grateful to have had him as a professor!
Clegg cares about his students so much and always wants them to succeed! Extra Credit can save your grade by a bunch, and its super easy. He always has a positive attitude and makes you feel so welcomed. Amazing professor!
All of the reviews basically say everything needed to say - Clegg, even on an online format is great. The material and application can be challenging so I highly recommend a tutor and taking advantage of other resources including the extra credit he offers. There's a grade resurrection policy and he absolutely wants everyone to succeed.
Amazing professor. Not only was he kind and respectful, but he cares so much about us students and provided us with all the resources needed to succeed. Brad from MCB 150 needs to take notes from Dr. Clegg!!
I swear this man cares more about his students than he does himself. All he wants is for his students to love biology as much as he does and to feel like they can have a future in the field if they want it. Really thats all I could ever ask for in a professor. A true needle in a haystack.
Professor Clegg is an amazing instructor. He clearly cares about his students mental health and encourages his students to not strain themselves over his course. In addition, he always had study sessions in which I highly suggest you take advantage. He has these sessions for students to ask questions about anything about the unit being taught.
Dr. Clegg is an amazing integrative biology professor. His class was not particularly hard, and he is always willing to go over topics you don't understand. He also has review sessions the weekend before an exam and will stay until everyone's questions are answered.
He is so passionate about biology and does a really good job at explaining different concepts in a manner that will help you learn rather than help you memorize. The classwork and homework is clear and concise and easy to access. He is very humble and accessible outside of class.
Phenomenal! Dr. Clegg really wants his students to succeed!
The content of the class itself can be challenging, but Dr. Clegg made it seem super manageable and was always available to answer questions and discuss course content. From staying at exam review sessions for 5+ hours on Sunday nights to inspiring pep talks, Dr. Clegg is extremely invested in student success.
Ben had a very fair grading policy, and I enjoyed taking his class a lot! As long as you put in the effort, you can succeed in this class. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
Dr. Clegg is my favorite teacher from my freshman year. He is approachable and really wants his students to not only succeed but be excited about biology. His lectures are great and he has great TAs as well. He has weekly extra credit and each week you get the same assignments so you know what to expect. He is truly amazing at his job!
Amazing professor! Responds super well to student needs, office hours are helpful, lectures are super clear and interactive! Super approachable professor who explains every topic very well and is clearly passionate about what he does! Highly suggest taking this class!
Ben Clegg is genuinely great at his job and you can tell that he has a passion for biology. Hes gets a bit dragged down as time goes on but he still has boatloads of enthusiasm. Hes an absolute stand out guy and I respect the hell out of him. Great professor 10/10 would recommend.
Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had. Ben structures his class in a way that he WANTS you to succeed -- he has TAs give office hours every day, gives an optional final that can replace your test scores if you do better on it, has multiple opportunities for extra credit, etc. He is also very enthusiastic about what he teaches
Dr. Clegg is amazing! I highly recommend him as a professor. You can tell that he loves biology and wants his students to succeed.
Graded lecture questions, but if u watched the lecture, they weren't too difficult. Super informative and I learned a lot. I loved discussion too. He is extremely kind and just a fun guy all around. His final wasn't that bad either. You have to study and review. Not an "easy A" class but it's very manageable and fair.
Don't buy the textbook, you don't need it. Pay attention during the pre-lectures, that's where you learn. Take the actual lecture seriously, because that's where he clearly explains the pre-lecture. Do the extra credit like your life depends on it. The class is really easy if you work. Makes MCB 150 look like a PhD level course. Work hard offrip!
Best class I've ever taken. Dr. Clegg obviously cares about his students and his subject which makes it easy and fun to learn. If you do the pre-lectures and pay attention in class, you'll do well. It's more about understanding and application than memorization. Plenty of extra credit throughout the semester along with an optional final exam.
Very passionate and very friendly. Much love for Ben! Really cares about his students and does everything to keep people on track and prepared.
Dr. Clegg is a fantastic professor. Easy to get along with, is always willing to talk about course content, and is very thorough in his lectures. BE SURE TO WATCH THE PRE-LECTURES! That is where most of the learning is. The lectures are also helpful, since he goes into detail about the content. Take the merit section, if you can (IB 199).
amazing professor. genuinely cares, his TAs are all competent (to my knowledge), gives an abundance of extra credit. my advice to excel in this course is to actually do all the pre-lectures (and if you're going to cheat on pre-lectures/hw try it first and then check yourself before submitting), attend all lectures, and DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT.
Clegg has been my favorite STEM professor so far. He's good at teaching and he's actually super helpful. His pre-lectures genuinely prepared me for lectures, so just make sure to take notes on the pre-lectures. He made the class interesting as well. Office hours were also a life-saver. Lastly, DO ALL THE EXTRA CREDIT IT SAVED MY GRADE!!!
Ben was hands down my favorite professor last semester. I loved how his class was organized and how all the work you had to do was useful and helped solidify your knowledge by the end of each week. He also gives a ton of extra credit chances (like 5% of your grade). There is a book to buy but no one I knew ever read it and we all got A's.
too judgy
Professor Clegg was by far my favorite professor this semester! His lectures were well organized, and it is very clear that he is passionate about teaching and cares a lot for his students. The content can be challenging if you do not put in effort, but overall the assignments and exams were not bad! Final is also optional :)
I loved professor Clegg. He is super excited about what he is teaching and really wants you to succeed. Awesome class.
Ben Clegg is amazing at teaching and a sweetheart!!! He cares about our mental health just as much as he does about our grades, which is so important in a professor. Even if you get a B or a C on an exam, you can still get an A in the class because of his extra credit opportunities and because his class is built around a "growth mindset".
Dr. Clegg is a fantastic professor and I would take again. Lots of extra credit opportunities every week, and unlike other biology classes, whats in lecture is whats on the tests. Dr. Clegg will stay after class to answer all your questions, and even takes a week out of the semester where all classes and regular assignments are cancelled.
Dr. Clegg single handly make this university worth it. He has the highist quality of pre-lectures, lectures, and has the best teams of TAs. If you have time to take this class for any major who is interested in life itself, then there is no better place to start than Ben's IB 150.
Ben Clegg is one of the best professors I've had during my educational career. He doesn't teach you to memorize biological concepts, he teaches you to KNOW them. I would 1000% take this course (or any other course he teaches) again.
If you don't pay attention to those pre-lectures, you're going to struggle throughout the class.
His passion for the material made me want to study integrative biology as a major. He really cares for each of us--and a what a teacher! His lectures were amazing. I would recommend this course to others.
Clegg is an amazing professor! He is incredibly good at teaching the material and he is also very passionate about what he is teaching. The way he structures the lectures and pre-lectures is very helpful when it comes to setting your own pace for learning but also to help the material really stick and not just be memorized.Cherish Clegg he is amazing
Professor Clegg cares. Since his first lecture, I knew right away that he loves biology. IF you do all your homework, attend class/discussions, AND DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, you will be fine. I think his teaching style may not always work with everyone, but he does try really hard to make students excited about the various topics. Clegg is great!
definitely take him if you can- ive never had a teacher so compassionate about not only what they're teaching but also the students in the class and their success
Great professor, lectures are engaging and useful to the test material. Plenty of resources are provided to understand the content.
He is a great professor and the lectures are not really engaging but make sure to do the pre lectures or else everything is confusing. IB 199 really helped me more that the lectures also make sure to take advantages of the resources and to do the extra credit from the beginning.
Professor Clegg is an incredible human- he genuinely cares about all his students, and you can tell that he's passionate about his material. He's also just a cutie pie. I definitely could've gotten an A if I had studied better, so don't be intimidated! Biggest tip is make sure you're reviewing material every week (or as often as possible!
Both Dr. Clegg and my TA for the course were caring and wanted students to succeed. Lectures were engaging and fun. Dr. Clegg offered lots of extra credit opportunities and had plenty of resources to help understand the content. Clear expectations. A book is recommended for the course, but I stopped using it after a few weeks so save your money.
I found the course load a bit heavy at times (two pre-lectures, one HW assignment, and pre-discussion questions per week) mostly because I found the pre-lectures a little unengaging. That being said, I really liked everything else about the course. Dr. Clegg and my TA really cared about their students and the extra credit is also super helpful.
Dr. Clegg is a great teacher and very engaging! Do not waste money on the Pearson textbook (I never used it)! Pre-lectures and homework took a lot of time for me outside of class in order to fully understand and take notes on the material. Study well ahead of time, focus on learning goals/pre-lectures/homework to prepare for exams.
This class is really annoying and has a lot of unnecessary work.
Professor Clegg's lectures are engaging, and the class workload is manageable. Utilize the provided resources, like the pre-lectures and extra credit, to succeed. unstuck AI was also super helpful for preparing for exams.
This class was pretty easy and enjoyable. There are 2 pre-lecture assignments (45 minutes each), 1 pre-discussion question assignment (15 minutes), and 1 long homework assignment at the end of the week (1 hour). You should not waste your money on the textbook, it was really expensive and I never opened it once and still did well in the class.
I strongly encourage this guy. Dr. Clegg is a great person that wants to see you succeed and seems to enjoy what he is doing. He is very charismatic and passionate as well as supportive and kind. Although there is no curve, he offers plenty of extra credit which can easily bump your grade a whole letter.
From a guy in a busy frat and multiple extracurriculars, I have been looking for a class that makes me feel smart and gives me time to focus on other activities. Ben's the man, bro, he teaches stuff both in class and outside of class whenever I am confused. Good job, Ben!
Professor Clegg has a lot of energy and really cares about his students. He makes sure you understand every lecture and encourages you to participate. He also gives lots of extra credit opportunities and his pre lecture videos are always really helpful too.
Very nice professor and very helpful during his office hours. Lectures and pre-lecture assignments can be hard to follow or understand. Application based so studying isn't as easy because memorization is only a small portion. If you stay on task and don't fall behind this class won't be too difficult. Lots of time given for tests.
Ben is the BEST teacher I've ever had, which is saying something considering he's teaching a class of about 600 students. The course is extremely well thought-out and doing the work ON YOUR OWN (although it can take forever sometimes) helps you tremendously. I'd take this class again and again if I could.
Easily one of the best, if not the best, professors on campus! Tons of extra credit (which is the curve) and makes concepts easy (I know that's contrary to my grade, but got burned out.) This class is a lot of work yes, but if you don't fall behind you will succeed! Make sure to always do your pre-lectures as well! The TAs are also very good!
I truly loved having Clegg as a professor. He cares about how people perform in his class, and he wants everyone to succeed. His lectures are engaging and his humor helps with the extensive length. He is enthusiastic to teach, and I would definitely take another class with him if I could.
The class isn't easy, but definitely achievable. Ben is super nice and inspiring. He's a great professor and gives great advice. He's super honest about what you need to do to get an A and he's the kind of professor who believes everyone in class can get an A. Honestly, other professors should be more like him.
Nicest man on the planet. Pre-lecture videos are sometimes long, but contain a lot of important information. Definitely take notes during lecture. Exams were very similar to practice problems given before the exams, and he will gladly provide you with help if you need it!
takes attendance way too seriously and always takes class 5 minutes after it ends
amazing prof
Very good lecturer and very doable class. Everything on tests is covered and there is a lot of practice available.
Overall, he was good. The content wasn't necessarily “easy,” but it was mostly intuitive. His lectures explain concepts in great depth, lots of EC opportunities, and homework is similar to exams. He can kind of ramble a lot, and personally the class didn't resonate with me. Was still fine though!
You have everything you need to succeed, it's up to you to put in the work. Nice guy, boring lectures and he would always talk way after the class ends. Overall, just study as the lectures come since the exams are long with a ton of content and you can lose track of the earlier topics of the unit.
Do not be a first-generation freshman. He preaches how important health is but if you get COVID and reach out to him, you're on your own. I would avoid speaking to him outside of class as he seems to have a penchant for eighteen year olds.
He talks a lot and honestly it interferes with learning the material since he is constantly talking away.. he will try to make a point yet go in a thousand different directions and never truly reach a conclusion. Also, the way he words his questions are confusing and hard to understand, he tries to be so extra with all the extra wording.
Dr. Clegg is an amazing, fun, and passionate professor. He would stay on reviews for 4-6 hours at a time, and really cared about his students success and wellbeing. Doing his prelectures, and actually taking time to understand it/ take notes, made lecture very easy. You have to dedicate time, but if you use his resources you'll do very well.
This class isn't THAT hard. Its a four credit hour course and requires the ability to apply the knowledge you learned in class instead of memorizing. This does make the exams hard but as long as you do the practice exam and the online review session, you can succeed. He can just come off a bit condescending and his teaching style was not for me.
Clegg is great at explaining concepts. His lectures and pre lectures are a little redundant at first, but the structure of his class this way helps. Very kind person— only thing is that he usually goes a few minutes over, so try to avoid having a class right after lecture.
LOVED this class. Was it challenging, a little bit yeah but it is college level biology. He is such an amazing professor and while lectures felt rushed if you went to the 4-6 hour review sessions before the exams and went to office hours Ben and his TAs would clear everything up for you. Loved this class!
I loved this class. Ben and his TA's (shout out Adrien Seabloom) are great. If you don't understand something they make sure to explain in different ways. The lecture is almost 2 hours and can sometimes be redundant or too fast if you're running low on sleep lol. However, by far one of the best courses I've taken!
I really disliked this class. Basically edged us with clicker pts at the end of lecture (ppl would leave) bc he went overtime almost every class. Discussion wasn't helpful. Never used textbook, and the homework was tedious, though the practice tests were somewhat helpful. People glazing but I hated it. I failed every exam, BUT ended with a C sooo.
