Cushing has an agenda and uses the classroom to push it. Instead of learning about the science of Sociology, we get lectures on worker's rights, homophobia, racism and government abuse in Mexico. He even offered extra credit to students willing to attend an anti-Mexican-government rally. Hold your tongue and it's an easy grade.
Very passionate about the topics discussed. If you attend class and and do the readings, you will grasp the concepts. I have gained so much knowledge about the true world we live in and it's opened my eyes to the problems and solutions. He is very inspirational, open minded, and the classes are never boring. Take this class!

Amazing class! I loved it. He's very easy to talk to and encourages everyone to voice their opinion. He also makes it very easy to get excited about the discussions. I definitely recommend his class.
Ben was great! I learned more from him than any other professor I have had and he really knew what he was talking about. Not a lot of homework, but expects a lot out of it. Important to do readings, you will understand a lot more.
Ben is expects you a lot what he calls "critical thinking." He does not explain the assignments in great detail. Even if you know the material well, it is hard to get a good grade.
He is the best! Pay really good attention to his lectures and learn to take good notes. You need to try to follow his lecture outline. Rewrite his lecture notes after the class. You do not have to read the book page from page but you can read it as a reference for you lecture notes. Two essay based exams and one paper (two pages).
The very BEST professor at PCC. Out of the dozen+ professors I've had, he's without a doubt the best (and it's not close). Fair warning, he's not an easy grader, but he's fair. Be prepared to work in his classes, but it's completely and totally worth it. I'd take any class he taught.
Ben was awesome. Tough class, not an easy A by any means, but if you are willing to put in the work you will get an A. Provides a "Real College" feel at a Community College. Highly recommend.
Ben is smokin' hot, physically and intellectually. His wife is lucky. He has been an amazing professor. He is one of my teachers for my first term in college, and has allowed me to fully engage. The discussions in his class are eye opening and inviting. Self grade class. He encourages looking at other books, perspectives along with the course! A+++
Pretty much the perfect professor. He's tough but fair, and you actually have to learn a lot to pass the class... however it's not a problem if you show up and study, as his teaching style makes learning easy. If you are considering signing up for his class and reading this SIGN UP NOW!
Excellent class and excellent teaching method. Class is easy if you actually show up and pay attention, anyone that complains is a slacker.
Highly Recommend!!! Really great class. Three assignments that you choose. There is a variety so your personal interest can be addressed. If you put in effort and hand things in on time you'll be able to get the grade you want. I would disagree with anyone who says he isn't open to unique perspectives, he would thank anyone who shared during class.
he's been my favorite teacher by far. i hope to take another class from him.
Anti-American at times, hidden political agenda. Nice dude but he preaches a bunch of stuff just to get people going. It was the same over and over "the global south this and that" blah blah blah.
Great guy, amazing teacher. I've taken more than 60 credits worth of classes at PCC and Cushing is the best there is here. If you are reading this, sign up for his class before it gets full!
FANTASTIC Teacher, I'm learning so much! The biggest downside from him is that he's almost too easy of a grader and sometimes you don't feel challenged. Great guy, and always willing to just hang out and talk about the subject if you have questions.
Ben Cushing is phenomenal! Totally engages and captivates the class. I took him at PSU (hoe to take him again), and every day was a packed house of 70+ students. Few people miss class because his teaching is so brilliant! The work is challenging but highly-rewarding. If you ever get a chance, take this professor!!! You will not regret it!
Ben is great. I love his teaching style. He goes in-depth with everything. Sometimes goes over-time tho. Fantastic teacher. Funny, helpful, and genuinely nice! Love this professor.
Ben is a nice professor. A bit of a hard grader. Make sure to attend his class. If you can't make it for some reason he works with you. Though he is relatively new to teaching he is good. His class is interesting, tho for me it was a bit hard to grasp some concepts, but I think it was more a a "me" thing more than a "professor" thing.
Although he charms and impresses the young students, he isn't good for adults. I am a student in my 30's and I find that Ben doesn't show a lot of respect to people who think differently than him. He is a bit patronizing to older students who questions his teachings. I don't mean challenge his teachings, I mean politely asking questions.
Very helpful and knows his material. However shoves his views in and doesn't let you create your own. EASY grader, you grade part of your assignment, he grades the other and averages the two out. I had no knowledge coming into the class but left feeling prepared for a higher level SOC class.
I didn't think anyone could top Zonoozy, but Ben Cushing very well may have taken the lead in my favorite professors of all time. First of all, HOT, which I rarely get to say about my instructors. Secondly, knows what he's talking about. He's engaging and thought provoking and teaches in a way that is relatable to everybody. Take his class!
Outstanding teacher. Takes a bit of getting used to as far as style of teaching but once you catch on, hang on for the ride. He is probably the brightest in his field, and he is passionate which is a great combo. He is open to any questions and will not embarrass you if you say something out of line. I respect him, but not the subject.
He has a sense of humor that makes things so interesting and lighthearted on heavy subjects. He's open to discussion in class, no matter how different you see things. Always helpful and offers clarification, before, during, and after class.
Ben is an inspiring and thoughtful professor! Took 2 different classes of his. Homework assignments require much reading, but the topics are all very interesting! Excellent teacher, definitely made me want to come to class!
Ben is the man. His discussions provoked thought and provided a lot of insight on current events. The units cover in his 204 class are very interesting and the cultural relevancy is applicable in other courses (namely writing). I highly recommend taking his courses, plus he is a very well put-together gentlemen.
Ben, is really amazing. he has made me want to learn all I can about soc~~ thanks
Fantastic. Lectures are imaginative and enjoyable. A four-hour class with Ben goes by quickly. Classes are discussion-driven. You are expected to do quite a bit of reading outside class but it's not hard. Ben is very nice and helpful. He makes sure you understand what he's talking about. If you want a SOC class, take it with Ben! End of story.
Took his class online, very well organized course. It's easy to get an A if you do all the discussion and journals he then had a paper due at the end of the term. No quizes at all
ben is a great teacher very interesting class you have to do your readings.i would recommend the teacher and the class.
I'm currently taking his online class. It is amazing! I am learning so much, and it's easy for me to work with at the same time. Ben is understanding and interactive, and is always willing to help you learn what you need to. I would recommend him to anyone!
The best professor I've ever had at PCC. Engaging, dynamic, extremely intelligent; he really makes you think critically and does a great job of making learning theory interesting. I only wish he taught more than 204! Makes me very excited to take classes with him when I transfer to PSU.
Ben is very a very passionate instructor, and it is obvious he loves what he does. The class is all reading, writing papers, and class discussions--no tests or exams. The subject matter is very timely to today's economic struggles. I highly recommend this instrutor as well as the class.
Ben is an amazing Sociology instructor. You can tell that he love what he does, uses videos and other materials to help students connect and better understand the subject. If you are taking this course, make sure to take it with Ben...highly recommended!
Amazing teacher. He is really into his work and he makes every class interesting. If you are gonna take sociology, it is best to take it with him. I would take this teacher again for sure.
This class was great! Teacher loved the subject and wanted to get students to love it too. Used videos and pictures to explain points learned in class and we only had to write a paper or two. Great class, and would take another of his again!
This was an easy and boring class. All work was tedious and repetitive. Textbook is used but info was also easily found on many websites. On a good note though, if you enjoy reading and doing simple disccusion post each week, plus a book a assignment, and weekly journals then this is your type of class.
Ben is a passionate professor who loves what he does. The class is filled with reading, writing papers, and class discussions. The class is very interactive so I recommend it!
Best teacher! Funny and knows how to make his classes fun! RECOMMEND BEN HIGHLY!
Ben Cushing is one of the most interesting and engaging instructors I've had.
Ben is a really into his field loves his work. The class is straight to the point just read, ask questions, and have a good time lot's of in class discussion.
Ben is a very good instructor, I took the class and I found it very interesting, and it changed my way of thinking. I was able to understand the relationship between an individual and the society in a broader way. If you ever think of taking any sociology class, he is the right instructor.
Ben is a really amazing instructor for multiple reasons. He is very helpful and informative and he makes this class an absolute blast. He is pretty laid back, but not in a lazy way. I not only respect him as a professor, but as a person. This is by far the most enjoyable class I've taken in the 4 years I've been at PCC.
His sociology class was an eye opening experience for sure. I am a biology major so I don't really get to take a lot of sociology or psychology courses, but I am extremely glad I took his sociology class. If you have the change please sign up for one of his classes at some point in time if you can fit it in your schedule; you won't regret it!
I enjoyed taking this class with Ben. He is very passionate and his lectures are relevant to your life & currently events. The class really makes you think about how society works. Only one concept test & two essays. A lot of readings. No course book required other than the novel we read class. Group assignments. But over all interesting & Fun.
Ben is the most inspirational man I've ever met. He was always there for me when I needed to talk whether it was class related or not. His courses require a decent amount of work. I've taken three courses with him each was amazing and life altering. 1010 would take again. He showed me what I want to do with my life.
Ben is a passionate, funny professor who is all about letting the class make the major decisions. For example, he does a self-evaluation sheet and lets the student grade themselves.
This teacher knows so much. only teacher who ever made me love a subject. Best teacher I have ever had. He makes you want to show up. He really is interested in your views even if they are different from his. If you get a chance take this teacher you will not regret it. I have learned so much from this guy and he really changed my world views.
Ben is hilarious and I like him personally, but his revamped climate change centered "Social Problems" course was a disaster. He's a tough grader and won't offer advice on how to do better which was super frustrating. He assigns a ton of reading but doesn't discuss it in class. Overall this class was a huge disappointment, didn't learn much.
Ben is an amazing instructor. I have never had a class that i felt so bad about missing, even when I'm sick. He balances between delicately handling sensitive topics and providing comedic relief through some kind of unexpected hilarity. There is a significant amount of reading, but i find it's all really good. This instructor might change your life
He is by far one of the best instructors at PCC hands down! I had him for Sociology in Everyday Life and you can tell he loves what he is talking about. His class started at 8 AM but he did a great job at making everything exciting and interesting. Just do yourself a favor and take him already.
Ben is an amazing teacher. This was my first SOC class and he was so great I'm taking another class with him. He's is very open-minded, helpful, funny and smart. Highly recommended.
Ben is a good instructor. He is smart and nice and is always willing to help. I thought that the topics brought up in the course were very important and interesting and I think his main goal in this class is to really open your mind and perhaps make you question what you thought you knew. I would recommend him.
Ben is an extremely patient and caring instructor who is always willing to take extra time to help outside of the classroom. We went over many very heavy subjects during class, but he managed to make it both humorous and educational.
Super awesome professor, definitely would recommend. Most of the students who take his classes come back over and over again lol. He's super funny, his lectures are enjoyable, and he chooses really good readings. No exams, one written midterm, and one homework assignment a week + 2 readings.
I enjoyed this class very much! no textbook needed, material provided by professor. Ben is very engaging, I am sure the whole class have fun learning.
Ben is a phenomenal professor and makes sure that you understand the content. There is no textbook, but there is a novel that is required to read. However, the book can be found easily on amazon for $10 or less. Grading criteria is always provided and he is more than willing to help. As long as he sees you are putting in the work, you will do well
Ben is a great teacher. I took his social problems class and he choose to go over climate change as it relates to a social problem. That was interesting. He was very repetitive and we watched a lot of documentaries. But he also realizes that sometimes social problems are hard to learn about and is in tune with people's emotions. Hard grader onessay
A reasonable guy. Dosnt drone in a structured manner but in a manner where you can feel his passion for what he is speaking about. Classes are usually better when the class participates into the discussion.
You can tell he really likes what he is doing. I took him online and I would say he's pretty easy. There are four 3-page papers throughout but no weekly quizzes, just weekly discussion posts and two follow-up responses. There are a couple videos you'll have to watch for discussion posts, and he takes a little time to grade, but good otherwise!
I would never take is class again. I put in all my effort ever single day just to get a B in the course. He grades extremely hard and the lectures are boring. If you miss more than one class then expect to go from an A to a B. DO NOT TAKE
Either you get along with Ben's teaching style or you don't. I happened to really mesh well with the way he teaches his class, so it was an okay mix.
This is the second class I have taken from Ben. He is a very passionate, empathetic, and dedicated teacher. He definitely encouraged discussion and critical thinking. He constantly challenges you to approach everything from different perspectives. He is not judgmental and appreciates what his students have to say. One of the best teachers ever.
Ben gave the best supplemental readings, especially for such a basic sociology course. They were interesting and thought-provoking. I wish this class was a full term because I think I would have gotten even more materials. My class was a 5-week condensed course but Ben packed in readings that I actually printed out to save for other courses.
I actually loved this class. It was jam packed into a 5 week course, but the material and discussions were so intriguing! He answered all of my emails and helped me thoroughly understand a subject. I've been out of the class for 5 days and already used the material we learned in conversations and normal observations in society. Take his class!
He is the worst professor I have encountered. He has incredibly opinionated views and puts down his students when they don't agree with him. I took and online class with him and several of his responses to me left me in tears, questioning if I was smart enough for community college. He doesn't encourage free thinking. Its his way or the highway
Ben is an amazingly inspirational instructor! I was hooked as soon as I completed the first weeks videos/readings. He has an amazing way of making us really dissect the way we think about ourselves/the world around us. I took the condensed 5 week course and I cant believe how much I learned. Left wishing we had more time and signed up for Soc 205
A heavy amount of readings (and occasional films) are required each week to be completed by Tuesday, then post a substantial discussion by Wed. Honestly the amount of reading needs a lot more time to absorb &then quote a Fri deadline would be reasonable. The papers are heavily critiqued with little guidance but to "reach out" if help is needed.
One of the better professors Ive ever had.
I loved his class! He makes sociology fun and interesting. He is very helpful; if you want him to read your essay he will be more than happy to and will give you excellent feedback on it.
Love his class! Learned a lot and would recommend him to anyone!
Amazing class; it has been inherently obvious how much Ive grown as an intellectual this term. Attendance is a factor. Assignments were just 2 essays. One midterm exam thats super easy. He uses big words so prepare to enhance your vocabulary A TON. Attend/Do homework, youll get an A. He is intelligent and understanding of life: enjoy his class!
Awesome professor! He's funny and relatable which makes lecture more engaging.
Ben is a phenomenal teacher. My absolute favorite teacher I have ever had at PCC. The material is engaging, but even more engaging is his knowledge on the subjects that he teaches. We only met once a week and I wish we met more often. There's a lot of reading but the readings are interesting so its easy to get through & 4 papers. Take his class!
Ben was a great teacher for an online class. Sociology is a difficult subject so beware that the discussion posts and essays are hard they really make you think. But ben did a great job of making the subject interesting and giving great timely feedback on posts and essays. He was amazing and so knowledgeable!!
Ben Cushing is truly a gifted professor! I have taken SOC 204 and SOC 215 at PCC Rock Creek. The way the class is structured and how the material is executed is incredible. He is very organized and is always willing to chat with you after class or help you understand content. I can't say enough good things about my experience with him and the class
Amazing professor and amazing class. The workload was so light but still made you critically think. Very discussion heavy with a few papers throughout the term which you will be prepared for.
This was a great class! He provides a lot of reading, which can be overwhelming at first, but it's definitely not necessary to read every word of every text. Every discussion post was very interesting and taught me a lot of new perspective.
Ben was one of the most engaging and thoughtful professors I've ever had. He provides thorough, personalized feedback, and you can tell he is passionate about Sociology. Ben made it a joy to learn, and ensured the class was interesting and thought provoking. The class does require A LOT of reading. A LOT. But it's 110% worth it!
Hands down, my favorite professor for Fall Term! The reading was very insightful and inspirational. Weekly discussion posts were tough topics but very well done(think BLM, LGBTQ+, Sexual Assault). Three essays are due throughout this course. As long as you put in the work, you will pass. He's also very receptive to communication and responds fast.
Super easy going guy! Makes you want to learn more and return to class!
Ben is an awesome teacher that supports your learning. He is a good listener, and he has respect for you as a student. Self grading is popular with him, so get ready to try hard enough to think you deserve an A! I recommend him to anyone who loves a passionate conversation and a heavy topic.
Super fun, interesting, and engaging teacher. A few pretty small assignments (2 pages, mostly), plus weekly quotes discussion, where you talk about what authors main points are. This is all supported by a self grading rubric, which lets your reclaim a little agency in your learning.
Ben is incredible. This class should be required for anyone whos going into public service! The discussion posts and readings gave me anxiety but it was still super fun! Amazing teacher who has done great things! Im going to miss him!
Ben was fantastic. He posts all of his coursework in advance, so you can get ahead if that's your learning style. A lot of reading, but all relevant and helpful. Really draws on historical context to explain modern social problems and encourages you to do the same. If you do the reading and participate in discussions, it's an easy A.
We have all had that one professor who has inspired and supported us when we felt doubt. For me, that professor was prof. Cushing. He's passionate about his classes, truly truly wants to see you and help you succeed, and treats you as an equal. You HAVE TO take his classes! He's one of the absolute best professors PCC will ever have.
I took this class to fill in a requirement for my degree, but ended up really loving this class & Sociology. Ben is an amazing teacher, and really does want his students to succeed. There is a lot of reading because there isn't a required textbook, but if you stay on top of them for the weekly discussion, and do the few assignments, you'll be good!
Excellent professor
Ben Cushing was the best professor I've had in my past two years at PCC. He's warm and extremely flexible. He cares about each student and will do his best to accommodate and support them. His teachings are invaluable. I loved his class and learned so much. He fosters a healthy environment.
I took SOC 204,theres no quizzes or test for his class which is nice fully online class. Lots of reading. Over all thought the course was okay
The thing that I did not like was he has different dues dates. He had reading due Tuesday discussion post due on Wednesday, Your response on others by Friday then your response back to yours by Saturday. It was hard to have things done by Wednesday on top of other courses when I would have liked to have at least by Friday to post my discussion
Teachers make the classes, so if you take any of Ben's classes you're going to be grateful you did so. Changed my world view for the better!
Was understanding of my situation. Good grader and learned good things I apply to life.
No tests or quizzes, and his grading system was flexible...you essentially get to grade yourself. He is definitely one of the most inspiring instructors I've ever had, if you get a chance to take his class, don't hesitate to sign up.
one of the best professors of all time. really thoughtful as well and explains things very thoroughly and checks back in every now and then to make sure everyone is staying with him and still understanding. really helpful and a kind hearted teacher who really cares.
Ben such and amazing teacher he doesn't expect much just do your part by turing in your homework doing your quotes from the readings and showing up he made SOC an interesting class I really enjoy it for sure recommend take ben for SOC!!!!
Self graded- clear expectations to get an A. Most of the assignments are papers so if you prefer written tests this isn't the class for you. One of the projects had a creativity component.
ben is one of the greatest most down to earth, understanding, thought provoking professors ive ever had before. he is super flexible to different learning styles that help each student individually all while teaching and solidifying important topics. you WILL need to do outside reading for each class, but i truly have no complaints.
I am disappointed. After reading all of the amazing ratings, but no. Maybe his online classes are not as good as the in person ones. He is slow to grade and impossible to get a hold of. He just ignores emails. Really frustrating. The class is very reading heavy. Expect to read up to 80 pages a week.
Ben creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for students- excellent at incorporating students' voices and perspectives in class. Instead of simply talking at us we are encouraged to dig deeper and ask questions. Get ready to read A LOT outside of class but it is important to because lectures expands deeper on the readings assigned before class.
Professor Cushing makes this class engaging and flexible. No tests or quizzes - you essentially grade yourself. Definitely take this class if you can, and use unstuck study alongside the readings for great study prep.
Ben is an amazing professor. He's very engaging in and genuinely cares for his students. He uses self grading which is very attendance heavy, but it's useful because the most important discussions of his subjects happen during lecture/class time. I've taken multiple classes with him and I'm not the only one who keeps coming back for more.
i love you ben cushing
