Ben was a great guy, but was very confusing and expected a lot for the final. He did not specify what would be on the final, instead he said 'everything'. Grading was a bit weird, we had a debate worth 1% of our mark. Also, took 2 months to mark the final exam.
Nice guy, terrible teacher. Marks very funny (bad), there are much better instructors at MRC. Skip his class.
nice guy, decent teacher. He was pretty slow with his teaching and we didn't get started till 15 minutes in which kidna screwed us over at the end. Was wayy too unclear on the final exam and just said 'know everything'. I would go to his class again.
Too difficult. Too specific of a marker. Litterlally, no part marks for partial correctness. Skip his class. Smart and nice, but far too difficult. Really affected my GPA. There are better econ teachers in the school.
Hard to understand. going to class was a waste of time but he has mandatory attendance. Don't take him!
He's a nice guy and clearly smart, but not the best teacher. Grading structure for the class is a little messed up. Takes his time getting into subjects and repeats himself too many times making the class fall behind and rush everything at the end. Unclear on what he will test you on and his marking style is really specific. A GPA downer.
Ben is great, if you have a study buddy in this class it helps, however, Ben is really helpful and friendly. I would recommend him over other econ professors.
Good guy, easy to do well in class if you do your homework and show up. but he is a little hard to understand
Nice guy, a little hard to undertstand which was problematic for me as I lost focus very easily.
Not a bad class he's a nice guy reasonable with marks and if you pay attention he explains stuff quite clearly.
decent prof, wouldn't go out of my way to get him but there's much worse out there
He is a great prof!!!!!! He makes economics easy, take this class with him!!
Good proff the only thing with benji is that you have to attend the class so you understand the material plus you get bonus marks for just showing up! when it comes to exam Benji is a fair marker sometimes he will give you marks just for effort! If I had to take the class again I would still pick Ben
Ben has a strong knowledge of economics and its clear in his lectures. He takes the time to make sure every student understands, which is time consuming sometimes, and is very flexible to student requests. If you go to class and pay attention, you dont need to study much. Overall an easy class. I would recommend Ben to other students.
If you're taking economics I'll advice you to take Mr Ben's class He's the best economics prof u can ever roll with. Economics will be ur favorite after u're done this class with him. You dont got no choice than take his class if seats are still open in it
Good overall prof, helpful with exams
Ben is a great teacher. Very helpful and if you participate in class he will do his best to give you a good grade. The only bad thing about this class was that he teaches the first chapters really slowly and in depth and by the end of the semester he rushes through a lot really important things that are on the final exam.
One of the best profs i've had, he actually cares how the class is doing and goes over everything in good detail.
Good teacher overall, fair on marking. Takes a little to get used to his accent, has clear writing on the board. Sometimes focuses on very simple parts of the calculation when he could entertain more advanced concepts.
I think no matter what teacher you have macro will be pretty boring but Ben's a real nice guy good teacher
Good teacher, nice guy.
Good guy, definitely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Course moved slow in the beginning and tends to focus to much on smaller concepts. Overall for as much as economics is a boring class I found it enjoyable due to Ben's teaching. He is a little hard to follow due to his slight accent and kind of talks in circles sometimes.
Good guy, very approachable and always comes to class with an enthusiastic attitude. Ben is also very knowledgeable and a fair marker. I recommend!!!!
Ben is an awesome professor very fun and easy to talk to he is really there l make sure you do well as a student
Excellent teacher. Provides prompt feedback via email. The Myeconlab and Maple TA resources provide all you need for an A. Highly recommend!
Great guy, good teacher
Great teacher. Has a thick accent that can be hard to understand some of the time, but he takes the time between concepts and encourages questions. Very friendly and accommodating. Read the text book before lectures and it will be a breeze.
Great Prof! Sometimes his accent can affect some words more than others, but still incredibly clear while explaining theories. His notes are great, and he's so friendly, approachable, and has a great energy in class. Highly recommend Ben as a prof!
Although Ben is nice, he's a horrible prof. It might be due to the new text book, but his lectures were useless. If attendance wasn't mandatory I would say dont bother going to class bc tests are very heavily based on text content that is quite differet than his notes. his poor way of explaining concepts made them seem harder than they really were
Ben is a really nice guy. His lectures are very dry and not in depth. He expects you to read almost every page of the text book and his exams are mostly multiple choice based off the text with a few short answers questions based off his lectures. Attendance is worth 10% of your grade.
Great prof, goes out of his way to help. Unfortunately the tests he gives lack congruity with the material he teaches in class and his teaching style can be really dry.
He is a very nice guy, but his lectures are very boring and expect to listen to him talk the whole time. Can be different to understand his accent. Content and notes covered in class are very different from online quizzes and assignments that you do. Attendance counts for marks.
He is extremely knowledgeable, but should not be a teacher. The material itself is not difficult, but he makes it a struggle. Avoid if possible.
Ben is one of the best profs at MRU. He's a really fair grader; provides opportunities to make-up testsquizzes; grants extensions; and is generally very friendly and approachable. He was careful to take extra time to explain more complex concepts, and held sufficient office hours for you to ask questions outside of class.
Some ECON profs will make you hate ECON, Ben is one of them. He makes simple concepts super complicated. Teaches concepts one way, but phrases questions on exams & assignments in a manner to confuse and trick you. Weekly group review questions are absurdly difficult. Presentations and his questions afterwards are just downright mean and humiliating
Ben is a really good prof. i really enjoyed his lectures and i started to like ECON because of him. he's very clear on what is going to be on the quizzes or exam and he's also a fair marker. Mind you, ECON is not a class you want to skip. regardless of who your prof is, its not wise to skip the class.
He is always there to help. I have randomly popped into his office to ask many questions. His downfall is the online tests and his powerpoint slides, they are both very different so its hard to know the expectations and the midterm was very hard(lots of memorization). MUST GO TO CLASS. He takes attendance.
Cannot understand a word he says - Even him explaining the course outline was completely incoherent. Not good at teaching as well. SHOULD NOT be a professor. Should probably just be working a normal day job.
Ben is an awesome prof! he is a super nice guy and he really knows his stuff, you can ask him anything involving economics and he will give you a good answer. the course is a little dry but Ben is an awesome professor.
Ben is a very kind individual. He is very knowledgable, and tries to make difficult material as easy to understand as possible.
One MyEconLab based off a chapter in the textbook a week. Final and midterm were based on MyEconLab and all written was already practiced in class. He is very kind and the questions you get tested on is something you've seen before. Follow along every week and its almost impossible to fail. He is the best!
Definitely one of my least favourite professors I have had. You can barely understand a word he says making it difficult to learn the content. He goes way to fast with his lectures and you feel like you are teaching yourself all of the material. He does examples for you without explaining it. Makes the class more difficult than it should be.
Ben is a great prof. Econ was not an easy class but Ben is always willing to answer questions and gives you extra time on assignments if you need.
Ben can be hard to understand and his notes can be kind of confusing. Posts very easy assignments online that are very similar to the midterm and final. Try and pay attention the best you can in his class and you will do well!
Ben is very nice and awesome at explaining the concepts and the math. He uses in class examples that are useful in study and the econ homework. However, his exams are very heavily theory based - so you must thoroughly read every word of your text book to understand it. Attendance is mandatory, but you want to be there for every econ class anyways.
This proff is vary caring and wants his students to do well. Also vary passionate about Economics and can relate the course work to real life situations. I didn't exactly love his extra online quizzes and i found them way harder then what was learned, but he's always there to help. He says to get the text, but I didn't use it once .
Extremely disorganized. He has serious issues with any homework, doesn't provide any chance to practice before doing something worth a signifiant portion of your mark. In class moves at a super fast speed that is impossible to keep up with, writes very messily causing frequent issues with notes. Is willing to help if asked but not helpful. Awful
Very disorganized and he does not like to give practice questions to help you when it comes to midterms or final. He is a sweet guy and says he is willing to help but when it comes to it, he doesn't help at all. Please save yourself and get a different professor. Tests were impossible, and lots of MC had nothing to do with what we did in class.
Ben is absolutely terrible at communication. He is discriminatory towards medical conditions and has a poor teaching style, this is evidenced by the fact that his slides hardly mirror the text. The text helps significantly and the guy takes his test questions from test banks (Midterm and Final included) A lazy individual who collects tenure cheques
this class was harder than it needed to be. we asked why the review guide didnt line up with the test and he answered that "its just an introduction, you guys need to further look into the notes, etc.",w/none of it on the test. his review guides are useless, MAKE SURE you dont rely on it. lots of test questions come from the launchpad review tests!
This course is a bit outside his usual wheelhouse, so I don't know what he's like in typical ECON courses, but for this one he had hugely unrealistic expectations for reading, everything was group work, and it was almost impossible to understand what he expected from us. I will never, EVER take another class with him.
The way he teaches the course content is quite boring. From speaking with majority of the class, they arent following his lectures either.
Please do not take this oh my god. Absolutely the most boring lectures you'll ever listen to and the great thing about them is that you don't even get enough info from them know everything thats on the assignments or tests. Doing the assignments I've learnt almost everything from Google. Could not stress how much you should choose a different prof
Hands down the absolute worst instructor I've ever had. His tests DO NOT match the study guides he posts, his lecture notes are the farthest thing from helpful to prepare for tests, and his style of teaching is extremely boring. If you take his class Google will be your only source of help for his assignments and even tests. Would NOT recommend.
This has been my worst professor so far. lectures are boring and do not explain the chapter very well. Never replies to emails. chooses not to have office hours meetings. made the 2nd part of the midterm very confusing in wording and thought it was fair when many students complained. Overall, bad proff. Google is gonna be your best friend.
He seems like a good professor, but the online format is difficult to follow. He clearly knows what he's talking about but his lectures are heavy with content and very boring. Never responds to emails. His course requires the purchase of an online key, so beware if your finances are tight. I would not recommend the online version of his courses.
His lectures were mostly reading slides that he uploaded later. Technology issues are such a problem that he lost part of our final exam marks and tried to have us retake it, and we lost a lot of time on our midterm due to the test not opening.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH BEN! Since school has been online he never shows up to class on time and there are always technical difficulties. He also didn't make our midterm accessible so we were losing time. and a day after we took the final he emailed us and said it didn't save so we had to do it AGAIN!!
The semester was online due to the pandemic and it was a mess. Lots of tech issues during class time, and for the midterm he uploaded it late and labelled it incorrectly, so we lost valuable time and had extra stress for it. He lost all of the marks/ submissions for part 1 of our 2 part final exam and made us RETAKE the final. Is that even allowed?
Do NOT and I repeat do NOT take ANY economic classes with Ben . Taking online Intermediate Macroeconomics with him was an absolutely hellish experience. Doesn't respond to his emails, does not actually TEACH concepts (Just reads off slides). He does not care about teaching or his students and it shows in how extremely dull his lectures are.
Ben is alright. His online assignments were decent, he gave us a lot of examples which made them relatively straight forward to complete. His lectures did not include enough theory in them, which meant that answering some questions on the final/midterm was difficult unless you heavily studied the textbook. Online are rough in general.
Decent prof, rarely answers his emails though. Final was work 45% and was really hard. He gets his multiple choice questions from a test bank. Assignments and Midterm were a breeze final was hardest test i've taken. Money and Banking has really good topics but probably the hardest class i've taken.
The way he teaches online during the pandemic is horrendous. The exams are worth 75%. The written and t/f part of the exams use a blackboard plugin called Mobius, and the system stinks. It took me 20 minutes just to log into the system for each exam; there was no technical support offered, and he didn't respond to requests to rewrite.
Clearly better suited for in-person teaching. Textbook/assignments CRUCIAL for understanding. Can be confusing, making it take 2x longer when studying to understand material. Technical difficulties MUCH more present than other courses, yet isn't very lenient when students have issues. Exams/assignments much harder than lecture notes make it seem.
A terrible instructor, tests do not relate to lecture at all. Not lenient with online issues that students may have with the software that he selected. Takes forever to respond to emails. (I emailed him during an exam like he told us to do if we had questions. Responded 5 hours after the exam was finished). DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES
One of the profs who has actually taken his time converting his lectures from in person to online well. The labs you do in class are almost exactly the ones you will see on the tests. His notes are very helpful and takes his time to explain the content easier.
Ben seems like a wonderful guy, but doing the homework that he assigns is nearly impossible because he never explains anything. He will go over the formulas for hours but yet never explains the theory behind any of it even though the majority of the work focuses on the theory. He also takes days (at best) to respond to questions over email.
Do yourself a favour and do not take any class with Ben.
I took this class thinking he was a decent prof because I had heard someone say good things about him. This class is so difficult and Ben just makes it worse. He has great worksheets which he goes over in class but the assignments are worded so difficult even someone with a PHD cannot understand it.
He is a VERY kind and understanding person, to be sure. He is invested in his students' success and is not a hardass at all. However, he is a bit unorganized and the tests/homework don't really line up with what he does in class. He explains the math behind the theory but almost never explains the theory. Good guy; not so good prof.
He's a genuinely nice person and gave our class an opportunity to increase our midterm grades. He's caring and is very invested in his students' success, but ultimately, he's not great at teaching. He explains the math behind the theory but never the theory, and can sometimes be a little disorganized regarding the lecture material. Nice guy though.
SO hard to understand and pay attention to. Requires us to write an in person final and midterm when all the other course sections do not. He will not provide the answers to his practice worksheets, so it makes it very difficult to learn it at home. Most of my learning for this class was done out of the classroom, and his material made it very hard
Ben is nice and jolly when teaching, although don't be fooled, he is extremely difficult to understand, and it almost feels like he wants us all to fail. All other courses have online midterm and final, while Ben's has in-person for both. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.
HORRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES. never replies to emails even though he always tell us to email him whenever. i sent an email 14days ago and still no reply. he is VERY disorganized. he just reads off his powerpoints then gives you a 30q quiz EVERY WEEK WITH MULTIPLE PARTS and 3 big assignments with 15q each with 3493824 parts to it.
Amazing guy, always joyful and upbeat in class but his lectures and quizzes. The lessons go ok, maybe just a little unorganized BUT HIS QUIZZES, OH NO. If you have Ben there will be terms and and concepts within the quizzes that you've NEVER EVER seen before. Don't bother looking back at the lecture slides/notes Cuz they're not in there. Have fun!
Ben is one of the most understanding professors you can have. He will help you when you need it and wants you to do well. He is also super nice. His quizzes are very specific although you can do well if you work hard. My only piece for complaint is that he has little to no formative assignments which makes it really hard to study for exams.
ben is singlehandedly the best professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning form in my entire life. ECON is the hardest subject I've ever had but ben makes it so easy with his explanations. best professor in the entire school hands down
Ben is a great prof. Super caring and is open to helping students who are attending class regularly. Will take this prof again.
Ben cares a lot about his students, he is really passionate about the topics within the class and wants all his students to succeed. Bens teaching style is great with time for questions with in the lectures. 1103 is a challenging course with a lot of work, reading the textbook and doing the homework to be successful will help. Would take Ben again!
Ben is one of my favorite professors that I have had, he is so passionate about economics which really brings his lectures to life. The content is quite difficult so going to class is a MUST. If you want to do well on the quizzes, buy the textbook. Ben is so caring and wants his students to do well, he does what he can to help his students succeed.
Economics may not be the easiest subject, though Ben has helped me quite a lot with this lecture. He has shown me that he cares about his students passing, and if you email him or talk to him after class with an issue, he will respond effectively and accordingly. You will have to read and study the textbook efficiently if you want to pass, however.
Please stay away, you may think this is a good prof based on these reviews but guaranteed If you take my word for it you will have a really difficult time understanding things in Ben's class. He is unable to show how the assignment is doable, oh, by the way, there is also 2 Extremely confusing Assignment which is worth 20% of your grade. stay away!
I'm of the opinion that the economics department at MRU is pretty weak, but Ben is easily the worst I've had. Assignments are thrown together last second and don't make sense, he doesn't post updates on when assignments and due dates are posted, so glue yourself to D2L. The midterm is excessively stupid. Just avoid him.
Ben is a very good and understanding prof, I found his class very straightforward and not complicated. He made his worksheets very easy, as we would go through them in class, though you need to read the textbook. Unlike most students on here, you need to go to class if you want a good grade, you can't skip lectures and expect a decent grade.
I swear to god the final exam was based off of a different course. Bro didn't teach us a single thing on that final. he was a nice guy but taught what he wanted to not what was important. I encourage you to take a different prof. He is nice but doesn't teach what you need to know.
This man was one of the best teacher I've had, he is always helpful and does everything that he can to ensure that you understand what is is he is teaching. He always responds to emails within the day, and whenever you ask him for help he does everything he can to help. The course can be hard but ben makes it interesting and as fun as possible. NVM
Economics is a hard course, however, Ben makes it very simple to understand. You can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed, and is always open to criticism to make the course better. Show up to class and you'll do great!
He's a great teacher who does his best to help prepare students to do well in macroeconomics. Most of the bad reviews for him to do with the course itself and not with the professor. Only thing I have to say is that you need to attend lectures to do good (which seems like common sense). The course is pretty hard but Ben teaches it very well
Good econ teacher overall. If you show up and pay attention, you'll be allright.
I struggled a lot because of his teaching style. Regardless, attendance matters because he has mini quizzes at the end of the class that requires passwords. His 'study guide' consists of the formula sheets... I never know what to specifically expect on exams. He has tutorial worksheets he does in class but does not even provide the answers to it.
Excellent teacher who was very fair! My favorite professor!
Macroeconomics in particular is a very hard-to-understand course. However, Ben makes it simpler to understand. He cares for his students and answers most questions when you ask him. Attending at this class is a key to success.
The course is heavy material yet Ben teaches it in an amazing way with the lecture notes followed by tutorial worksheet which is the same as Mobius assignment. so it is easy to get a good grade. He is very lenient and helps you. SERIOUSLY TAKE HIM FOR MACRO, BETTER THAN ANY OTHER PROF I HAVE TAKEN. AND IM PRETTY DUMB IN MACRO MYSELF BUT I LOVED IT
Mobuis assignments make up 24% of your grade and all of them are free 85% as long as you show up to lectures as he basically does them for you. His quizzes are pretty hard as they are based on the textbook which he only mentions once at the start of the course so make sure to have it. Nice guy though and always answers questions.
Ben is a nice person and passionate but this course was very hard. I was a straight A student and the way he taught this course was confusing. His tests had difficult terminology not used in his notes and his assignments were always very long. Overall if you have to take him for Intermediate Macro, my condolences.
The professor is a great guy himself. He is funny and understanding. But the way he designs grading is super difficult. Avoid taking Macro with him if you can. Most of the class will be based on big assignments and tests. Also practice in this class is important but he doesn't give enough of those opportunities.
I think he is a nice guy. He seems to care well enough, however, I would NEVER take another course with him again. I would never recommend him to anyone. Truthfully, he talks in circles, and he never really explains anything fully. You have to teach yourself. Even then it's not really good enough. Like I said, nice guy. Not a great econ prof.
Ben seems like a nice guy, but very difficult to follow in lectures. He rambles on and never discusses key points in the class. Therefore, you're left wondering what even happened during those 80 minutes. The midterm and final were extremely difficult, and his lecture notes on D2L were useless for tests. Take another class if you want a good grade.
Doesn't list any problems to help you practice. Talks in circles but never actually explains anything at all. Examples provided aren't that helpful. Studying 4 the final with absolutely 0 recommended material in the Final Study Guide except for a formula sheet (doesn't cover all the formulas) makes me want to slam my head into my table repeatedly.
Ben is a not a great prof, he I am sure knows what he is talking about, but was bad at explaining to the class. He has a midterm and final which are both reallyyyy hard almost everyone I knew failed. He gives you opportunities to boost your grade (he says) but it doesn't help.
His lecture notes did not line up with the material we were being assessed on. D2L quizzes used terms we weren't taught and sometimes didn't even have the full information to solve them. The tutorial worksheets weren't very helpful for practicing what we learned and when we had our midterm so many people did horribly. Would not recommend him.
Ben can be a challenging professor, but his class is manageable with the right approach. The lectures may be hit-or-miss, but the Mobius assignments and unstuck AI make for helpful study tools. Attend class, use available resources, and you can succeed.
Ben is a very reasonable Prof, his class is hard and his tests suck but he gives a ton of practice problems and a lot of online assignments. The online assignments are really easy grade boosters for the class as well as the mobius assignments. His tests are hard but they aren't worth very much and at least he tells you what is on the test. meh
I like Bens laugh its awesome! Ben is reasonable but his class is challenging.
Overly reliant on online assessments, we don't get to see what we got wrong, how are we supposed to learn? Lecture slide are lacking. Does not post completed examples. No way of knowing what you'll be tested on, even when given an exam guide. He teaches the math and tests on the theory. The tests themselves have too many points to lose for errors.
Gives no feedback on Mobius assessments. Lecture slides lack the theory we're tested on. Teaches the math and tests on the theory. The exam review guides are misleading. Didn't do all the chapter assessments, we were so far behind (didn't do 55% of them, calculated it). Will make you doubt everything you know about economics. Avoid at all costs.
Ben's lectures are misleading for his tests as the tests are all theory and we only really learn math and graphing in class. His tests are impossible to study for and formatted horribly. The only thing that saved my grade are the online assignments but he doesn't even let you view them so you can study them for the test. Don't take this class.
Ben makes this class MUCH harder then it is supposed to be. A big part of your marks are dependent on basically these pop quizzes that can only be done in class, making attendance mandatory. Lectures are not engaging, does not provide study guides for midterms or finals. Just straight up not a good experience with this prof.
Outrageously awful professor. Ben lacks the ability to effectively teach macroeconomic concepts to his students as the majority of his class failed the midterm & had a low average on the final. He does not find other ways to teach concepts and thinks he knows what he is doing. He doesn't care about student success. Find another prof to teach you.
The professor tends to talk a lot without making the material clear, and I didn't really learn much. He made the class unnecessarily difficult and didn't stay consistent with the other two professors — he pretty much did his own thing. Be prepared for a lot of talking with little structure.
Ben is a good Prof, if you are doing his assignments and reading the textbook his lectures make a lot more sense. His tests are hard (Mid-term and Final) but they are weighted lightly. More of a assignment orientated Prof. Make sure to come to class for his practice questions at the end of chapters as that will help you succeed in his assignments.
Reviews surprised me. Ben is a great prof his laugh is funny, comes across as very genuine. There's lots of assignments, both midterm and final were challenging but keep up with the work, the course is very manageable. I really enjoyed Ben's class. He teaches well, he can be a bit hard to understand, follow with the textbook makes class more clear.
Ben is a very nice prof and he cares about his students. He is willing to answer any questions you have after class and will make sure you understand it. The course content could be better, but its not Ben's fault that the Econ department at MRU is a joke. Calculus should be a prerequisite so that theory can be fully discussed.
