Taken several of his classes, would take more if I hadn't taken them all. Freakin' hillarious!
Textbook awful, lectures poorly organised. Unfair marker. Marks points on tests wrong despite the fact that they appear in the textbook. Lets TA mark your paper's formating and dock marks on bibliographies, even if you follow the model in the guide he tells you to use exactly. Yes, he's funny in class, but it's not worth all the other problems.
I enjoy his class, but I find that his humor is somewhat immature and his lectures seem somewhat biased against Christianity. However, this might be my paranoia speaking. I find his marking to be fair and honest, yet brutal.
A really fair prof, though he's brutal. If you try, you'll do well. Well-organised lectures, I found. He knew what he was talking about.
Ben is a great teacher, I have taken a couple of his courses and would recommend him.... he marks fairly and explains all assignments and tests clearly... hes always available when helps needed & is understanding you arent comfortable with presentations & speaking in class.. he is hilarious & his classes are very interesting & informative. RECOMMEN
He's a nice man, and he is always willing to help if you ask him. But I find his lectures quite tedious, because he is not a very good public speaker. And the texbook is almost more boring than the class, so it's not a good combination. But in all fairness, he is a nice person and a fair marker (but a tough one).
His lectures are quite boring and it is very hard to take good notes from them. His expectations for papers for a first year class are very steep. There are a lot of readings which contain an overwhelming amount of detail. The material is interesting but it's a headache to try and balance if you have a full course load.
Packs a lot of info into one class and it's hard to keep up with notes, but I guess that's true of all History classes. Fairly interesting, relatively fair marker but it is very annoying how we doesn't follow the textbook, it makes it difficult to read
he knows the subject well, but his lectures are tedious, crammed with too much information instead of focusing only on the main points. he is not a good public speaker. his expectations are high, and he is a tough but fair marker.
Has an extensive knowledge of the subject matter, but this seems to interfere with his lecturing. Because he knows SO much, he tries to cram all the information in in a disorganized manner, making it difficult to understand. Also seems to have problems speaking clearly, mumbles. Textbook is AWFUL, presents far too much information, onerous to read!
He's great.
I took 2 classes with Mr. Nilson. He was so informed and passionate about the material. He was very funny. Very helpful and understanding. Although he was a hard marker, I learned so much and became more interested in the subject.
Ben's great, a little too detailed though. Funny prof, is a hard marker, but knows his stuff.
I hated history in highschool, but loved Ben's class! I am taking 119 next semester it was so good. He knows so much on the subject and is funny and enthusiastic. You must attend class and take detailed notes to do well. I found the textbook was useful but not neccessary, as I used wikipedia to supplement his notes when preparing for tests.
Highly knowledgabe, crams a lot into lectures but has outlines that make it easier to follow along. Hard yet fair marker and really pushes you to do your best. Very approachable, amazing prof. He has me hooked!
Medieval England class: I took it last semester and I really enjoyed Ben. He was really interesting,(BUT you have to love history) and he is very friendly. His assignments are really diff then most profs. He is there to help, DO NOT hesitate to ask questions he is really devoted to his students. Would love to take his class again :D
I really enjoyed Ben's Tudor England class this semester. He was always very helpful when I went to see him about papers, and seeing as this was my first upper level class as a second year I don't think I did badly. HOWEVER the reading quizzes were ridiculous! Even my fourth year friends thought so. Nice guy, super high expectations.
I really liked his class. He slaughtered me on the paper and mid-term, but was just in doing so. If you work hard in his courses, which is not as hard as it seems because it is interesting subject matter, you will succeed. I won't have to encounter him until I take upper levels history, hopefully i'll be ready.
His lectures were useless to what was on his midterm and finals. He picks the most obscure and unimportant things to test you on. He constantly goes off on tangents and is very disorganized. The textbook saved my butt in this course. He was unhelpful and generally unpleasant.
Ben's lectures are both very interesting and entertaining but completely useless for papers or exams. He only focuses on 1 of the 3 textbooks he expects us to read and then berated the class for not knowing the text books. He works participation into 25% of the essay marks, but does nothing to foster discussion or participation in class.
Nilson definetly knows what he is talking about, a very animated prof. Lectures are usually somewhat entertaining, not very structured though. He is so unclear on assignments an tests!!! He gives little direction and I found no matter how hard I tried I would get the same average mark. Proceed with caution
Ben is a really knowledgeable teacher and is very helpful outside of class. It's a class that requires a fair amount of work but is definitely possible to get at least a B if you put in some solid effort.
if you're into Eng history this class is for you if not meh. i had absolutely no interest in it went in with no knowledge of the subject and came out with none. layout is ok tho 3 smaller papers instead of a big one. its more like a seminar than a lecture. only needed one book although there were like 3 that were required. more talkin than learning
Easily the WORST prof I've had. His material was way too confusing, his explanations were super dry and hard to follow and he wanted extremely specific answers on his tests. He makes a first-year course as difficult as a PHD course. If I haven't been clear so far, STAY AWAY.
Medieval History - The material was cool and intersting and he was a good teacher, I learnt a lot and like this class a lot. I went to every single class, took detailed notes, went to his office hours. I got 66 and 68 on my essays. I barely passes that class. He wants you to memorise EVERY DATE. If you arent' good at memorization STAY AWAY!!!
Jumps around the entire class, you can barely keep up with what he is saying because he doesn't pay attention to the time era, or even who is important. When it comes to marking he isn't giving you a structured guideline.
It may just be that I am fascinated by the subject matter, but I felt completely entranced when he was lecturing. He is extremely picky about essays but gives wonderfully detailed feedback so you can improve. I am normally an A or A+ student and I got 77% on his midterm. I'd be very surprised if anyone in the class impressed him.
I chose this class as an elective because im interested in this part of history, but Ben killed my enthusiasm right away. He knows his stuff, but his lectures are not good, the marking is tough for a first year course and the textbook is even bad. I would never take one of his courses again.
Although Nilson isn't the easiest professor, he is the best one I've had so far. He is extremely helpful and his lectures are very organized. He is a tough but FAIR marker and he leaves very detailed notes on how you can improve. He is extremely interesting and overall a grad prof.
Really really interesting. Totally sucked my in during his lectures with incredible detail and clarity. Tough yet fair marker, highly suggested for all History students.
Definitely the best History Prof at the University, and has great lectures. 10% of the class got 80% or higher...the way it should be at university. Marks hard, gives good feedback. His "Rome" game was by far the most enjoyable assignment I've done in my entire life. Well-outlined tests make an A possible(just take detailed notes and read the text)
Nilson is a nice guy but my experience with him as a prof has been nothing but hell. He expects a lot on exams but does not tell you ahead of time what he wants, he waits until it's too late and then says what he was looking for. I found him to be very hard to listen to and not interesting at all.
This is the second class I've taken with Dr. Nilson and he is my favorite professor at the university. Don't fool yourself though, you will have to work hard to get a good grade! His expectations are high and his class averages are typically low but it is worth it. The class average for this class was 54% but if you work hard, you will succeed!
The class wasn't the way I thought it would be. I didn't read much of the material, and he rarely mentioned that we should read it. He posts the questions that will be on the exams ahead of time. Take notes, they help. Not the most interesting course, some what hard to follow
Again, unstructured lectures and a severe lack of clarity took away from course. Also if prof had assigned specific readings for lectures would have been more helpful, main text was a narrow scope of topic. Honestly felt like I was in the dark for the entire semester. Hard marker, would not recommend unless necessary (bad for GPA).
He is a horrible prof his lectures do not really make any sense and his midterms and finals encompass nothing that is talked about in the course and found i had to google a lot of the answers for the prep for both midterm and final. He did not make sense and he was not very helpful at all.I would not recomend this course to anyone. HOrrible!
Excellent professor. Perhaps one of the most difficult that I've had, but I always learn a ton in all his classes, and he's a fantastic lecturer. Take detailed notes and study them in detail for the exams. He's fair and it's possible to achieve a very high grade in his course, just not easy.
Ben's lectures are some of the most interesting ones that I have ever attended. He is super helpful and if you take good notes in class you will not have to read the txt book. However he marks extremely hard, but very fair.
Good prof with only a few odd quircks, includes interesting side info that keeps the class engaging
Content of his lectures were sometimes dry but he always had jokes to keep you engaged. Not a hard marker but to get a good grade you have to put effort into your work. Always gave helpful comments on how to improve. Textbook is useless, just take notes. He gives a list of all possible essay questions for the final in advance. His Rome was game fun
Very knowledgeable, very passionate, Ben is also a fantastic person. His lectures are interesting and he has a lot to say about medieval Europe, particularly on Britain, his specialty. His tests were fair and straightforward, no surprises.
I did not understand what he wanted for his papers. When he incorrectly marked me absent which took away marks from me and when he misplaced my bibliography he was impossible to get a hold of.
Dr Nilson is my favourite professor. His lectures are engaging, fun, hilarious. I enjoy class. Textbook is not necessary, I did good without it. His games in class are awesome. a study guide with all terms and concepts is provided for final. Finals are easy if you studied. He makes the material interesting and that helps you remember it. Recommend
I really liked Ben's class and his lectures were always very interesting, engaging, and easy to follow. The assignments are kind of meh, and I found them to be a lot of work, but that's to be expected from an upper-level history course. He's also super nice and approachable, so don't be afraid to ask for help.
Ben is my favourite professor by far. I'm a history major and have taken all of his courses available to me so far. His lectures are fun and he is extremely knowledgeable of the content. His upper level courses are more challenging but worth it. Getting an A isn't easy in his courses, but as long as you do the work properly you should be okay.
Ben is a super friendly guy. His lectures are so engaging, and he keeps the class moving at a decent pace. Prepare to take lots of notes! Ben is a really tough marker, and makes you work hard in his class to get above a B-
difficult to know what he's looking for in a paper
I was really interested in this class prior to the start of classes but it was taught ina very uninspiring manner. Lectures had no solid structure, he was just giving out random facts, we didn't know what was important and what wasn't. We only had a final exam, no mid-terms but had mini assignments. Wouldn't take again.
I was interested in the course initially, but you could never tell what Ben wanted. Lectures were long, and completely verbal. What was important wasn't really highlighted other than the in the outline he'd give you before every chapter. Final was a selection of questions from these outlines. Rome game was awful. Papers were difficult. Hated it.
I loved his class even though I don't normally have an interest in history. My problem was that the lectures were kind of confusing sometimes because it's just him talking and spouting random facts. But the outlines he gives are very useful. Assignments are clear and relatively easy. Having no midterms and just a final was pretty stressful though.
Ben's classes are not easy, that being said, he is my favorite history prof. at UBCO. He is fair in the way he grades, and gives a great lecture. Show up and take notes, or you will have a bad time. Use the outline as a tool to keep track of whats important, but do not rely on it.
Definitely the best history prof at UBCO. He is funny, friendly, and very knowledgeable. He just stands there and talks, which can be boring for some people, but I found him interesting to listen to. Gives great feedback on assignments. Lots of reading and quizzes, but they are pretty easy. No final, just papers. Overall great, would recommend!
This class was ridiculous. Half of his lectures didnt make sense and it was externally textbook heavy. Tests every week, so reading is mandatory as well as watching podcasts. Would recommend to no one to take this class.
An interesting lecturer with fun little bits of knowledge. Thats where the fun ends, the assignments made no sense, the expectations for papers were ridiculous and contradictory. The final and midterms have nothing to do with the textbook or lecture material. Lecture delivery is all over the place with no direction, no slides. impossible to follow.
I would definitely take Professor Nilson again. He really knows his materials, he is awesome at teaching the material and making it nice and clear. I appreciated his style of marking even though it was hard. The feedback really taught me a lot. Would really recommend for anyone just starting off going into History
Ben's course is pretty much all lectures as you would expect for history. He is very knowledgeable and can answer any question you have. He has a few assignments that you might have to redo, but it only helps you learn. Very interesting course if you like ancient history.
Ben was great. His lectures were awesome! He as great at making history understandable to a young audience. His assignments were king of useless for this class, but if you know how to use Chicago Style formatting, you should be fine. Some people love him, others hate him. I think that if you enjoy history, and you put in the of work, youll do fine
Honestly the most confusing prof I have ever had. He basically tells you to know material from the entire course without giving you even the slightest idea of what might be on the final or the midterm. His lecture delivery makes no sense and is not linear, he posts no slides or text. Strongly recommend not taking his class if you like structure.
If you enjoy medieval history this is a great class if you do not, would not recommend. Ben has a really interesting game he plays in this class that is worth marks that makes his class worth it. His grading is not easy and he makes you work for your mark, but you can resubmit most assignments which is super nice. Overall pretty solid prof.
Dr. Nilson is alright. You can pass without the textbook but should read to follow lectures easier. He is disorganized in his lectures and talks all over the place so rewriting your notes later is a must. As for paper's he's pretty good only if they are resubmittable because that is the only way you'll get feedback, he posts a rubric so that helps.
Half the marks was weekly quizzes that were usually 1-2 45 minute podcasts and a 10 page ancient religion document. Very specific questions. There is a final that has nothing to do with the textbook or the quizzes. DO NOT TAKE. took this 2nd year class as a 4th year and it was still too much. AVOID
Ben is one of the funniest and most interesting history professors at UBCO. He loves sharing funny anecdotes and random history facts which make his lectures really engaging. Students who regularly come to class and engage with him will do great. Sometimes his assignments could use more explanation but ask questions and do thorough research!!
This was my third time having Ben and he is a pretty good prof. If you want an easy A this is not a good option, but it is very interesting. His weekly quizzes are tricky. The paper and final were reasonable but time consuming. Ben is very knowledgeable and I enjoyed his lectures. If you like history of religion you'll like 201.
Ben is a really fun and engaging prof who makes history interesting and has great one liner jokes that keep people awake. He's a huge nerd who designs games for class credit that are like DnD but with tons of research. However, the enjoyable nature of the class does not reflect the difficulty. Classes are time sinks that require hours of home work.
Probably one of the worst classes I've taken at UBCO. Will have you resubmit assignments numerous times and give you 1/10 on them if there is only one thing missing from them. There was no midterm in the class so how the final exam was going to be marked was a mystery. Guides for each unit were given however half the terms weren't in the textbook.
WORST PROF i have EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. I got a good grade in this class because I am a good student but thats about it. Most of my friends came close to failing. Do yourself a favour and dont bother
Ben is a really nice guy but this class was difficult and stressful. He is all about you figuring out how to do things on your own. There isn't a midterm so the final was a mystery. The assignments are difficult but if you talk to Ben, he'll help you. This isn't the class for someone who can't talk to their prof and isn't willing to work hard.
Ben is such a funny & sweet prof! He provides amazing feedback & I highly recommend 1st yrs to take is class as he helps you perfect fundamental uni writing skills (with the chance to resubmit assignments 3X). He was super accommodating during online learning and structured his course/deadlines so we were minimally stressed. 100% recommend!
Ben is the worst prof I have had in four years of university. PLEASE don't waste time or money, NOT worth the material. The "fundamental uni writing skills" he gives are equivalent to grade 11 and will not contribute to higher classes because he only likes to read simple easy writing. You redo ALL assignments since he will only mark them low.
Hes horrible. Mandatory classes, not recorded during the pandemic. You cant make bad hours, oh well. Happily talked about feeding a religious girl stuff she couldnt eat. Really bad vibes, doesnt like when students know things. Writes his own textbook that isnt even complete when the class starts, not table of contents, photos, anything. 0/10
Very unclear lectures, marking, and what will be on the exams. I love history but this is making it bad.
Although he prepares a game that we all have to engage in which is relatively fun, I have never felt more anxious in a class before. Feeling pressured to speak and attacked by classmates who did not agree with my actions in the game. I struggled with the papers and felt like I wasn't good enough.
The class was so unorganized - we didn't have any actual lectures, it was basically just students talking about what they researched, and a long game that is stressful. The class itself is very time consuming and you basically have to figure everything out on your own. I wouldn't take the class again because of how consuming it was: time sink.
Professor Nilson is the funniest and most dedicated professor I have ever gotten. He knows the material very well and can answer any question you have. His lectures takes the book to the next level, which adds to the experience of relieving history. He is very helpful with his feedback and is willing to give second chances.
So, I think Ben is a nice guy and very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, I personally hate that a large part of the class is a game. Much of your grade is down to your success in said game, but he roles dice to decide outcomes. So grades are often up to chance. Also I was at one point bullied during the game by others students, and he did nothing.
Prof. Nilson is an amazing professor *if* you enjoy his style of teaching. Most of his classes involve a "game" at the end, which is relevant to the course content. However, this isn't something you'll want to do if you're afraid of public speaking. Also, it's worth noting that your grade is NOT based on your success in the game.
Dr. Nilson is a very good professor if you enjoy his style. Most lectures were just rundowns of the textbook (which he wrote and provided for free). Most classes end with a "game" which is graded based on participation/attendance. He is a very caring and understanding professor and is willing to give second chances on assignments.
There was a semester-wide project that was not very good, it was confusing and not well explained. This class was reading heavy and all of it was to be done outside class time, and then class was spent just going over what was read. None of the lectures really furthered my learning from the readings.
Nilson is an 'okay' prof, he isn't bad or great--so I guess he's 'alright'. He definitely knows his stuff (makes lectures interesting), & can answer almost every question that is asked. His main and only problem is the organization of the lectures & timelines of info. I mostly just read the textbook and could basically skip class.
Professor Nilson has got to be the worst history prof Ive ever had. Hes a super tough grader,. Not very accommodating, and suffered a whole lot of stress from this course. Essays are hard and you basically have to figure the subject matter out on your own. Quizzes every week so be prepared to read a lot.
In Professor Nilson's HIST 119 course, you are given one 500-word written assignment, one midterm exam, one 1500 word assignment, and a final exam. That's it. He is hilarious to listen to in class and is passionate about what he teaches. He also wrote the entire textbook and gives it to his students as a PDF for free!
He is the hardest marker I have had for a history class. In almost every class there will be a very specific quiz on the 20-page readings you get assigned every class. There is no organization for the class, hard to follow along. There is also only one test and it is the final exam, so it is hard to know what he expects from students during tests.
This professor was the absolute best. Exams are tough (because they're 100% open book), but if you can use ctrl F fast enough in your notes, it all works out. Great class structure and super entertaining.
350characters isnt enough to express all the reasons why ben is genuinely the worst prof and completely failed as an equitable and inclusive educator. feedback on assignments is SO mean for NO reason, not even in a constructive criticism way, just a bully. not to mention the ridiculous pop quizzes he gives. Nice guy i guess but useless as a prof
Super funny and blunt which I like in a prof but was bordering on discouraging sometimes. Failed almost the whole class on first project and on my paper feedback said, "I guess I've seen worse writing", like thats pretty funny but I wasn't laughing when I almost failed. Exams were brutal too...60 mins for 60 questions and not all multiple choice
Dr. Nilson has a passion for history and has fun during lectures!!! There is usually no notes on screen and is heavily reliant on active listening. There are lots of difficult readings each week and the "textbook" is a weekly podcast so it kind of balances out! He often gets side tracked but it is always interesting and related to the material.
I really enjoyed Dr. Nilson's lectures. The class difficulty was a bit of a shock for my first year, but it worked out okay. He isn't super active with reminders or anything, but you should be safe with opportunities to recover. For the tests, I recommend taking a ton of itemized notes from his textbook (which takes forever but makes it easy).
