The class is basically online, because almost everything is done through MathXL. However, Mr. VanDerLinden stresses class attendance as mandatory, and that has been really useful, because he is more than willing to help with the math problems. He is very good at explaining, trying to make it as easier as possible. He also makes class really fun!
I'm not really a math person but I really liked this class! The stuff I learned I could actually apply to my everyday life and Mr. Van is a really great teacher. If you're an arts student that's looking for a math class, I would definitely reccomend this one
Easy class
He is willing to help but not very helpful. I have asked him multiple questions in class and still did not understand the material. He doesnt know how to explain math problems and doesnt really help.
Mr. VanDerLinden is a riot and very kind and uplifting. The only trouble is that this course would be just as easy if it were done online. If you are poor at math then I suggest taking the class, but otherwise you can just as easily get a great grade by just doing homework in class, although beware asking for help if you do, it irks him.
Mr. Vanderlinden isn't only great at getting his point across in his lessons, but he is just an awesome person in general. By far one of the greatest instructors I have had all through my years of being a student. I strongly recommend him to everyone. He is always there for everyone, for both academic advice and life advice.
Mr. Van is a really cool guy. He is easy going and willing to help. Classes consist of him going over homework questions that people have. The class its self is very self directed you don't really have to go to class except for test days. Do the homework and quizzes. they are the bulk of your grade. Easy class. Easy A. Really chill teacher.
He is one of the best instructors i have ever had. He actually makes math interesting. in the past i never had a good grade in math and throughout this semester i have had an a, because he makes it easy to understand the material
Best math teacher at GCU. Take him.
Mr. Van is probably the best math professor at GCU! He explains every concept clearly using specific examples to help students understand. He makes class exciting but he'd definitely not afraid to embarrass you so just laugh along. If you have the opportunity to take him, do it for sure!
He is a nice guy. Do not get behind in your homework or quizzes. Come to class everyday he does a lot of polls for participation. He is pretty funny and understanding.
Excellent in helping out students!
Class is basically online, but you come to ask questions and get participation. He is a really nice guy and funny, do not get behind of put off the work, you will loose track easily. He is a fun good teacher though
He is one of the best teachers i've ever had! Hands down my favorite teacher! He explains everything perfectly and is super understanding. I has him for psychology (which could be a very touchy subject) and he makes us all feel very welcomed. He will go above and beyond to help his students out! So good he made me reconsider my major.
Mr. Van was an awesome teacher for someone who dislikes math as much as I do. He made the class fun and interesting by using stories and applying real life scenarios. If you don't like math, this class is for you. If you think that math has no place in your field of study, this class is for you. He is so helpful and cares so much about his students
Mr. Van is a great professor. As long as you do your homework and study for the quizzes, you will be able to pass this class with no problem. Would definitely take his class again.
He is a good teacher but it is a very stupid class. You don't have any math tests but instead you have essays about a fake mission trip which sounds like fun but it is graded so harshly. It felt like I waste of my money because it wasn't helping me with anything.
A great teacher but the class was useless. I learned mostly every materials in High school freshman year. We wrote three papers rather than taking a test. All the homework are easy and I could've done this class online or doesn't really need it. It was a waste of money. Participation matters because it's GCU.
He knows what he is talking about and the way he lectures makes it very easy for any student that is actually paying attention to absorb the lecture and information that you need for that class. He randomly calls on you to engage in the conversation but isn't strict about it. He truly makes you want to learn even if you hate school. (I do) Take him
Prof. Van is the nicest guy ever! He is super fun and helpful and tries his best to take all of the stress out of math. He will give you lots of stories and installations to help you understand everything. It is hard because this course is designed in a way for us to do a lot of the work ourselves online, but he did his best to be helpful. Love him
This class was okay. If you needed help it was easy to get it. I just wished that the class sizes were smaller because that would have helped. I needed more one on one attention and he was good about helping out. I hate math and this class was not as bad as thought it would be.
Mr. Van is the best, such a great guy he definitely made me actually want to go to class, hes so invested in students its awesome!! So happy to have taken his class!!!! Highly recommend
Doesn't even teach. Sits down and says nothing. Learn criteria on your own. Such an awful class, hard to pass in my opinion.
Mr van is the best teacher there is! Highly recommend!
Mr Van is a really chill dude. He's pretty funny, and makes a lot of jokes. The class I took though, was very different. Its basically a do-it-yourself class, and I never actually spoke to Mr. Van once. Weird, right? I hardly saw him actually because the class was available all week to go in for participation.
It's a blended course, so a majority of the time spent is outside of class. The tests are VITAL to your grade, so preparation is KEY. A lot of people tend to procrastinate this class since it's mostly independent learning and that makes it way more stressful than it has to be. Easy class. Professor Van is hilarious and really great at explaining.
All homework needs to be done outside of class. Hes a good teacher, however the math program he uses is horrible. I wouldve had a better time in the class if the program wasnt always down or experiencing some problems. Be aware of the program crashing during the final.
Do not take this class. The professor uses a system called Mika and it is the worst online program I have ever taken. The amount of homework is insane. On average it took both my friend and I about 10 hours to complete if not more. The math itself is fairly easy but the amount of work is ridiculous. The quizzes also don't match up with the homework
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He's a nice and funny guy but not the best professor. This is the hardest course I've taken in college which is insane because it's math I learned in middle school. He makes this course WAY harder than it needs to be. The homework is so insane. We had 20 modules to do and it took 4-5 hours to complete just the 1st one.
This class is awful. The homework takes so long to complete and its only worth 5 points. He does not teach/give formulas for the excel like every other professor does which makes it super difficult to complete. This is also the only 144 that takes actual quizzes which are 10 points and they don't even match up to the homework.
Mr. Van is overall a nice and funny guy. When it comes to this class the homework load is ridiculous. The program he makes you use takes at least 5 hours to complete one homework assignment and get a C. He is the only 144 professor that gives in-class quizzes. I liked him as a person but would not recommend him as a professor
Takes too long to respond, does not give formulas for excel, very lecture based class, confusing practice problems, lots of homework, the major assignments are just an overall hassle
cool dude. very chill. stupid clapping exercise in the beginning. lots of getting out of class early.
He's a really nice professor and tries to be helpful. I don't think he's a bad professor or that the class was actually that difficult. I'm just bad at math and it was a 7am.
I had him at 7 am (do not take 7ams you'll want to die) she was engaging and gave good examples. He helped with the major assignments. But if your a bad test taker like me the quizzes are a good chunk of your grade. And the homework system he used was not very good.
I didnt really talk to him but when i did he was nice and is class was easy
Professor Van was nice and always willing to help. I liked him a lot although I didn't talk to him a ton. For math 110, you will pass very easily with him.
He was not a good professor. Expected a lot out of us and gave minimal direction. He didnt even let me make up work when I was sick and had a doctors note. Not a good prof, dont take him
I had Mr. Van for MAT 110 and 144, overall he's a good professor. math is not my strongest suit so I struggled but he was always there to help. I found myself going to the IA more than him because his explanations were very confusing. I failed every quiz but I got A's on my major assignments and I ended with a B-
If you have math with Mr. Van, dont switch out!! Hes really really good. He cares about you and your success, takes time to answer questions (without making you feel stupid), and even though lectures are long, he takes time to explain concepts in depth. Participation is important, but its a class that isnt hard to sit through. Hes awesome!!
Despite what most people think, Mr Van is the coolest professor Ive met since being at GCU. He is so understanding and the classes are simply and well instructed. He was even more understanding when I was quarantined with no technology and the school didnt notify my teachers or my predicament! 10/10 would recommend him and would take him again!
If youre struggling in math, hes not very helpful at all. Doesnt really explain a whole bunch.
He does not go in-depth for lectures, but if you email/schedule office hours, he is a great help. If you are not the best at math, do not skip this class or choose his 7 am. Make sure you dedicate ample time for Major assignments. PLEASE do not wait until the last minute with MA 3. He is caring/understanding. Take note of formulas and do ALEKS. :)
I took his class and almost everything was through ALEKS. He never did even one lecture but was there to a point if you needed help with understanding something. You did not need to attend class except for the day of an exam. He lets us out of class early pretty much every class. Take if you are good at math and want to breeze by with little effort
Mr. Van is a great professor and person. He is very knowledgeable about all of the material, homework, and exams. The homework is what you see on the test (almost exactly the same) so it is easy as long as you understand the homework. He is fun and energetic. It is PowerPoint heavy (since mine was online), but overall I would take him again.
Mr. Van is one if my favorite professors I have ever had here at GCU! I dislike math a lot but he made it fun and easy to follow along. Before tests he would pray for us and always made sure that we knew he was there for us. Even when we switched to online zoom classes.
He was good with explaining the work sheets but not the excel home work areas and it was hard to understand the concepts
I really enjoyed Mr. Van's class because he gives you the resources to succeed and then lets you work with what he teaches so if you go to class and pay attention you'll probably pass.
Vanderlin himself isn't a bad professor. But he does assign a lot of homework and has very intricate projects. I spent so much time in this class because it is so stressful and time-consuming. He randomly calls on students and forces you to answer but he won't humiliate you in front of the class if you get it wrong. He'll just walk you through it.
In this course, the professor did not teach. He was there if we needed help, but the lessons were online.
Mr. Van is seriously my favorite professor Ive had so far. He truly cares about all students, is genuinely so kind, and prays over the entire class before every single test. I absolutely hate math and am so bad at it, but this was one of my favorite classes just because of mr. van and the way he ran his class. & I even ended with a good grade !
Not effective when it comes to students, as a class we struggled and told him what could be improve, instead he demanded to learn his away. Don't recommend.
Does not give out excused absences, with lots of homework. The IA teaches some classes and does a horrible job and no one knows what is going on. Do not recommend.
He is an overall solid professor. His lectures are somewhat engaging and interesting to listen to. There is a medium amount of homework, but it is easy points. The major assignments are not explained well, so be sure to ask other students or ask him individually. The TA had really no purpose.
Overall, such an amazing guy who wants all of his students to succeed. Has a good sense of humor, and literally is a golden retriever lol
Doesn't ever teach new material, only ever goes over homework or what the most missed question on the quiz was, which doesn't help the next day. Also never went over anything from the major assignments and just expected you to figure it out. DQ for participation recapping class 50-100 words min which is an issue when you barely do anything in class
Professor Van is so awesome! He was very caring toward his students and showed his respect for us. This class is Excel heavy. For beginners with Excel it can be a hard start because he kinda lets you learn on your own and the instructions aren't 100% clear, but overall, the homework is not bad. You will have 3 major assignments.
though Mr van is a decent professor, the way that his math 144 class was run in spring 2022 was terrible, and participation in the class was a post to the discussion board about what we did that day, but with a minimum of 100 words... and a lot of days there's not enough things to talk about to meet that word count.
Vanderlinden made my math experience horrible. He offers no leniency, he doesn't care about his student's success. You basically have to teach yourself if you are going to be successful because he is not good at explaining things. I accidentally turned in the wrong assignment to him and he would not let me turn in the right one, resulting in an F.
I took a class with Vanderlinden online and it was the worst class I took this semester. I was constantly stressed out due to the lack of communication, guidance and instructions on the course. When I reached out to get help he was very passive aggressive and short with me. I recommend you switch out of his class, you will be set up for failure
Dr. Van was as an okay professor. The way he explained things including major assignments were often time confusing therefore the majority of the time it is easier to just teach yourself all the information.
basically have to teach everything to yourself. if you do good on the major assignments you can keep a high grade even if you fail the tests.
This class stressed me out because it was my first time using Excel. He doesn't show you how to do the excel homework until after it's turned in and he isn't clear with the major assignments which are worth a lot of your grade. Luckily, the ALEKS homework and tests were easy. I was just annoyed that you are required to spend 4 hours a week on it.
He never made himself available to any students and failed to adequately communicate the requirements of the course.
This professor was absolutely horrible. His lectures made no sense, he was never available outside of class, he was not understanding whatsoever. Whenever you tried to talk to him in class he wouldn't answer your questions and just tell you to "send him an email". Doesn't go over major assignments. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!
The worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. The class is pointless and should be avoidable and is so extra with the workload. The workload is entirely unbearable and is failing me in school. I would avoid this class if you can. For me its required and it's not getting any better. Prepare for hell if your taking Math-144.
vanderlinden is SO annoying. treats his students like literal kindergarteners, and makes you talk to random people around you like 10x per class. DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE AN INTROVERT. he literally has been the worst professor i have ever had at GCU, his IAs are also annoying helicopter IAs. this class was hell to attend.
This has been the worst class I have ever taken at GCU. I have always struggled with math a little but this class is an absolute nightmare. Terrible lectures that make no sense so be reddy to basically teach yourself everything. The TA's are also no help and can barely do the math being taught themselves. If this professor can be avoided do so.
Dr. Vanderlinden is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. Gives very clear instruction during class. many quizzes and busy work when it comes to homework but its nothing he can control. If you do ask stupid questions he will just look at you and tell you to figure it out.
Don't get me wrong Professor Vanderlinden is a funny guy and makes the class fun, but he also treats you like you're a kindergarten. He isn't the best at explaining things but he does try his best and cares a lot about his students. He isn't the best person to get a hold of and everything is done online. I mostly had to teach myself math.
This class was graded purely on participation, quizzes (SKCs) & hw (topics). I finished this course early. With MAT-110, you can go at your own pace. I recommend taking at least 1 quiz every week until you're done. Prof Van is always willing to help students and wants his students to do well. This course requires a lot of independence.
hard teaching style, nice guy but the class has a huge workload and I had to teach myself pretty much the whole class
I took his online class and never actually met him. Each week was a minimum of 5 hours of ALEKS and lots of topics and knowledge checks. We only had 3 exams and he was never there when I came in to take them. This class was very much teach yourself.
He's ok but he just sat there and did not really teach and can sometimes come off as rude when messaging him on halo.
Dr. Van was a good professor; however, he sometimes would get upset if the class did not respond to him right away. Also, he would make everyone have an "elbow partner" to work on examples but at times my partner would not even talk to me, so I pretty much taught myself in this class.
I would advise everyone to avoid this course, especially with this instructor. Reasons: he spoke to me in a condescending tone on multiple occasions, his IAs are rude as well, he was incredibly unhelpful in class, and he refuses to help students on the major assignments (ridiculously long assignments that take up all your free time and sanity).
I spent the 4 months this class went on in a complete blinding rage. I don't think I've ever met people as unhelpful, rude, and irritating as the instructor and his IAs. It was excruciating, and the grade I got doesn't even reflect the hell that I went through for this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS INSTRUCTOR. He is not nice at all.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I literally taught myself the entire course. He does not know how to teach. The amount of homework is ridiculous.
He put most of the responsibilities of grading and student engagement to the IAs in the class which made it difficult to communicate issues that students had. When asking for help I was told to ask the IAs or my elbow partner who also was confused about the class. Overall didn't learn anything in the class.
Beware that MAT110 is a complete at your own pace class. Prof Vanderlinden does not actually teach you the material unless you need help with something specific. That said, I found the class fairly easy and you can complete it early if you do all your work before the end of the semester. I wouldn't really recommend though.
He is a nice guy but I think I taught myself most of that class. He did not explain things in a way that I could understand so most of the time I would go teach myself the material using the ALEKS platform. As well as he does not explain the major assignments that are worth half your grade.
If you want a professor who checks his email twice a semester and lectures the whole class, Benny is the pick for you. Make sure to get a tutor that properly teaches you the material because you won't get it from Benny. With that aside, the class was overall good on the days we got out early... or didn't have class.
Took this class online. The most annoying part was having a required specific amount of hours needed per week in ALEKS. It was very unnecessary. I believe that people should be willing to learn and practice for their own needs, which change every day. The professor was nice and very understanding when I needed help in person. Not bad, but annoying.
If you have the opportunity to switch to a different class please do. When I asked for help on assignments or general questions I got told to ask my elbow partner or go to the IAs. It felt like I was teaching myself for the whole semester.
I love this professor! It's an easy class but Professor Vanderlinden does a good job walking you through the math. He also answers questions. He does participation by signing in so if you understand something you don't really need to stay for class. You can just tell how amazing of a person he is by the way he talks. Take his class if you can!
He seemed like such a nice guy but since my class size was so large it was hard to ask questions and get feedback. The IAs were really bad at explaining things so my elbow partner and I had to figure out everything on our own. Lots of notes and major assignments
Dr. Van is super friendly, but I would message him on Halo as he asked, but it took a long time to get a response and it usually wasn't from him but one of his 5+ IA. The Major assignments are worth more of your grade than the exams, but he doesn't go over how to do Excel, and unless you know how already its pretty hard. homework and exams are easy
This class made me hate my life. This professor doesnt help at all and the IA's in the class do nothing. Most of the homework is on Alecs so you dont really learn anything in class. You are better off taking this class online since it the same thing except in person you have to go class and waste your time. He is the most unhelpful teacher ever.
Dr.Van has an amazing welcoming personality but his class was not the easiest. Often times the work was all online and assignments were not explained properly, especially the excel projects. Even with all of the AI's, assignments and exams would take quite a while to be graded. In my opinion, you are better off taking this course online.
So much homework. I basically taught myself. He's a great person but his classes were so rough to go to. It felt like he'd just talk forever and ever and I never really knew what he was talking about. He also gave me wrong information about a major assignment so it's better to ask the IA's for help.
While Professor Van was super nice as a person, his teaching style was not the best. Most learning was done on Aleks and while Excel projects were the most point heavy assignments, it was never explained in class. The other problem is the IAs who were rude and only cared about sign out sheets.
Very easy A. As long as you show up for lectures (even though they're pointless) you'll do find. Benny is definitely a character, and loves to talk. Honestly I never paid much attention because he ended up confusing me more.. The class/work itself is largely online on ALEKS, but showing up to class will make/break your grade.
had a substitute once and she explained the material 100x better than he could. you have to meet a certain amount of hours on ALEKS every week which made it harder as someone who worked and was a student full time. If you don't know how to use Excel don't expect him to explain it to you just watch videos cuz he never explained the major assignments
I always struggled with math, but this professor caused me to have a C as my final grade. He didn't communicate well and didn't engage with his students hardly at all. The only positive is that I was able to get decent grades on the quizzes because they were online and there was less stress.
Ben VanDerLinden is a terrible math teacher. He literally sits at his desk all day and never engages with the students. Terrible when it comes to helping students. Terrible teacher. Horrible class and horrible teacher in so many ways he never will help students if they ask for it and always makes it more confusing than it already is. Super hard.
I'm currently taking his class and will be finished soon. Dr. Van is a very understanding person and is super fun to connect with (I sit in the front row). He follows GCU's guidelines on SDS accommodations. If you're sick, provide a doctor's note! Other than that, he is very relatable & explains topics and assignments clearly IF you ask questions!
I don't understand the hate in these comments. While the major assignments were difficult, at least the first one, once I understood what they were like they were very easy. In addition, he was very accessible outside of class which made homework and major assignments easier. He truly does have a great heart and cares about students.
He has a great personality and tries his best to be engaging during class. His teaching style is not the best, but it should get the job done. Most of your work and exams are on ALEKS which is pretty simple once you understand how it works.
Lectures aren't very helpful. You will end up teaching yourself everything from excel to aleks.
Unfortunately, 80% of the time he starts talking about math then somehow starts talking about random stuff not relating to math. At that point then everyone ends up not listening and going on their phones. The tests are graded very heavily and the assignments are never posted correctly so you always have to message him or the IA's to fix it.
Just awful
His teaching style is for you to teach yourself everything!
I highly encourage avoiding this professor if you are taking this class if possible. I am sure he means well, but you will teach yourself all the work and receive no support. I talked to him about how I was struggling to understand his material and he encouraged me to drop the class...
Avoid at all costs, probably the worst teacher I have had in all of my years as a student. You can tell teaching wasn't his first career choice but he had to settle. He would rather you drop the class than you ask for help multiple times out of the week. I honestly don't know how he still has his job.
His teaching style is to do nothing while you teach yourself everything. Definitely don't recommend.
Dr. Van is a good person but not a good teacher. Homework and exams are on Aleks. Excel sheet assignments pretty often WITH NO HELP. He says he explains it in class but he really doesn't. LOOK AT THE GRADING SHEETS. there are discrepancies between the assignment directions and the grading sheets so go off of those. go to class for points
VERY LAZY professor! You have to teach yourself EVERYTHING in his class!
Dr.Van isn't a bad dude, just not useful. His lectures are boring, you can't read his handwriting half the time, and the online module ALEKS teaches you more than he does. Him and the IA's take forever to respond to any question, and they give a response that never makes sense, or don't answer the question. The class was basically asynchronous.
Pro: He would let you retake your exams including the final if you did bad enough. Con: He seemed like a nice enough guy that just couldn't care less if anyone learned anything in his class or not. Someone needs to teach him how to teach.
I believe that he has a good heart. I just do not think he is good for students who may struggle in school. I found it very hard to communicate with him and get further help.
Get ready to struggle. He shows up just to get paid. He is nice but lazy.
WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
The guy just sits there and watches you struggle. I don't know how he still has a job. The school must be desperate for math teachers because he would have already been fired if not. If you can't learn from Aleks, you are doomed.
I had a terrible experience trying to learn math from him.
Pray your elbow partner can teach you math because Dr. Van certainly can't. GCU must be desperate for him to be able to keep his job.
He was a good teacher but my class was over 200 students. I feel like he would be better suited in a smaller class but it is very clear that he knows what he's teaching.
Professor VanDerLinden is a nice guy, but his teaching style is hit-or-miss. The class is mostly self-taught on ALEKS, with confusing lectures. While the work can be challenging, using Unstuck ai alongside the textbook and TA help can make it manageable.
I haven't had such time consuming homework in years. Dr. Ben is a nice guy but the workload for his class is not enjoyable.
Sweet guy, and loves it when students ask questions. But when asking for help he will not provide it, he will just tell you to "go practice" on your own when you don't know how to do it—lots of homework, excel projects that are ridiculous, and exams. Nice guy, and not the worst math I've taken but tough
He misses class a lot. You learn everything in his class from Aleks or the IA's.
Dr. Van is an amazing teacher if you already have basic math skills. He goes over material in class but if you struggle with math, it might be too fast-paced for you. If you understand the basics of math he is great and a really sweet professor. Know that the Aleks assignments are time consuming but they actually teach you what you need to know!
Doesn't teach anything! Allows test retakes though.
HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO ACTUALLY TEACH!
I was scared going into this class after reading the reviews, I have always STRUGGLED with math. But this class is a piece of cake as long as you show up and put the work in. Topics 1+2 are fairly easy, but I warn you now 3+4 are going to send you into a spiral, but then 5+6 aren't too bad. Use EVERY resource he provides they really help.
He doesn't even teach math half the time; he teaches Excel. It's just not a math class anymore; you can teach yourself more by sitting at home and doing the alek.
I don't understand why his rating are awful when he spends half the class making sure everyone understands what he's explaining. His downfall is over explaining though. If you put in the work and show up to lectures, it's not hard to fail. Any math class will be hard if you don't put in the effort.
I very much struggled in this class because Dr. Van makes concepts far too overcomplicated. His way of explaining is the opposite of helpful. If I could name this course, I would not name it MATH-144, but EXCEL-67. Why are we learning more about the intricacies of excel than math? I should not have a 20-hour homework assignment in a gen-ed class.
He s a good teacher, his class is mainly about lectures, and he loves questions!
I honestly don't know why he is rated so low. Although he is a tough grader, especially on major assignments, he does an amazing job at making sure every student feels prepared by going over it in class with Excel practice. He is very accessible for questions during office hours or after/before class. I very much enjoyed this class!
he's so easy. his exam reviews are EXACTLY his tests. he prays before every class and actually answers your questions.
Overall, he is a very sweet and caring guy. He prays for us before class starts and before every exam. Sometimes i think he over- explains easy topics which makes it more difficult and drags it on. However, he definitely wants you to succeed and always makes sure you understand the topic before moving on.
I was scared going into the class due to the low score but it was actually crazy easy. Lectures are helpful but not entirely important since exams are EXACTLY as the reviews, just studying that helps. As for major assignments, he does practice ones with us that use the same formula as the real deal, and videos that show step by step. Love him.
Dr. Van mainly tought off of his presentations and not visuals. The class is in a big lecture hall so sit in the first few rows to the front to see and make friends! I had to self teach myself all of the material and the first exam matters a bunch. Make sure you study hard, take the reviews for exams multiple times, participation isn't a big deal.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! You will not learn anything in his class. You will have to go home and teach it to yourself. The class is pointless if you are showing up trying to learn anything. The assignments take a long time. One assignment was supposed to take 15-20 hours.
The teacher was great at explaining topics even with a larger class size of 250 people. He uses a poll website for participation, even if you're in class, if you miss the prompt, your participation grade will go down. The Excel projects were annoying but not impossible to finish either. You're given plenty of time and resources like the workshops.
His overexplaining makes it hard for students to comprehend the lesson, but he's a decent professor. Work-wise is time-consuming, and I WARN you about Major Assignment 2. Do Aleks ahead of time, and you're pretty much done and just wait for the exam, though attend class since Polls are part of participation points.
If you take him, PLEASE utilize the math/ACE centers. He over-explains everything, which makes it very easy to overthink the easiest questions. He also tends to turn 3 explanations into the entire lecture. I ended up teaching myself most of the concepts. When the major assignments come up, please go to the workshops; they will save you!
He is a super nice guy but really unhelpful, the class does not prepare you for the tests at all and you basically have to teach yourself, I know multiple people who have dropped that class mid semester because of how useless this course is. There is no lecture at all and theres no point to show up.
He was a pretty good teacher I was worried when I saw all of the bad reviews, but he is really nice and explains clearly. He is also always asking if he needs to slow down and offers help out of class. All the sections were easy for me, but I would recommend doing them the week before the quiz, so the knowledge is fresh for the exams.
Dr. Van is a good professor, he posts his slides so if you miss class you'll be able to understand what you've missed. Dr. Van is good at giving you an ample amount of time to do the major assignments and homework and as long as you show up you'll be able to pass the class with an A.
