Very sympathetic to plight of calculus students. Always willing to help and change homework schedule as nessisary to accomodate students needs, within reason. No notes or calculators on quizes or exams, which is unfortunate.
He's a very nice guy
He is a math teacher that dosen't allow calculators used on his tests! I don't like his style of teaching, I feel like I'm not learning anything. You only have to do about 15 problems per week and he dosen't check them. He seems like nice and all, but I would still have changed classes if I could.
He overcomplicated everything. Three times he came into class and asked us to forget what he had taught the day before, because he had found out the other instructors don't even care about that particular topic. I took my tests to tutors and they couldn't figure out why he marked them wrong.
Brother Woodruff is so awesome! He is a fantastic teacher and teaches you what you will use. His teaching is effective and he is ALWAYS willing to help you understand. I would recommend him as a teacher.
Well, I can't say much- I didn't show up as I should. He is helpful, he teaches alright, although if you read the book you really don't need to attend, although it's a good idea. However, there is busy work... ANNOYING busy work at that. Not a last choice, but not the first. In other words, I liked the teacher, but a fourth of the work i didn't.
Brother Woodruff is a great guy and tries to make class as interesting as possible. His tests are a little tough but Stats are just a little tough anyway. He is always willing to help you learn with Exam and Quiz Corrections. His grading system is set up that it is possible to get a B even if you are struggling.
He is a nice guy. Is always willing to help on things. Spent most of the time using the computer instead of actually learning the math. I felt like it was more a class for SPSS (the computer program we used) than for stats. If you take this class you'd better keep your mailbox empty because he sends tons of emails.
Over complicates everything
over complicates everything, but a really nice guy
I don't know what people are talking about that say that he is a terrible teacher. He is the best one i've ever had and you would be crazy to take stats from anyone else. He makes everything seem like a piece of "cheese cake" and he is always willing to help you learn the stuff. Stats is already a hard class, but Ben makes it fun!
He was very helpful and willing to do whatever it takes to help us learn the material and do well.
taught, but concepts were hard to understand.
Great Guy. He is very helpful with each and every student. He explains everything perfectly well, so if you actually come to class and are conscious, you are fine. Finds things to keep it interesting!
Brother Woodruff is an amazing professor. I have never learned as much in any other math class. He even taught me how to drive a manual transmission!!! Bonus: He is so dreamie!!
The subject is inherently hard and he does a good job explaining it. He's always willing to help if you need it. If you have a chance to take a class from him I would suggest taking it. It wont be easy but you'll get a lot out of it.
Watch out! Bro. Woodruff is highly reviewed, but he is no longer using a textbook for 316, instead he is substituting his own cryptic and highly abbreviated notes. To be able to use a textbook would make the workload reasonable and much less frustrating. If you want to learn the content, look for another teacher.
I love that he uses his own material. It is MUCH easier to understand than the books and the examples in his notes are almost identical to the questions on the test. GREAT teacher! He forces you to learn so come to class ready to work.
I had him for Math 215 and loved it. Bro. Woodruff is a great teacher. The only reason things were unclear was because of the subject material. I would not take 215 from anyone else. He wants you to understand and puts forth a large effort to achieve that. If you are willing to do the work you will pass his class. Take him.
Bro Woodruff is awesome. Puts in tons of time to help every student. Committed to helping students learn - wouldn't take any math class from anyone else.
a good man! i truly enjoyed his class and would recommend him to anyone. his tests are hard, but you can do make-ups on all tests and quizes.
Greatest teacher ever. Allows corrections on quizzes and exams. Very fair and helps to ensure that you learn. The only way you would hate him is if you hate any effort in getting a grade.
Awesome guy, really loves this stuff, and it shows when he's teaching. This subject is definitely a harder one, but he does a good job of explaining it. However, too much time was spent on simple concepts at the beginning, so the harder, abstract stuff was crammed in at the end.
He didn't really explain stuff very well. I really liked him as a person but as a teacher it was really hard to learn. Mostly the students taught and its hard to learn from someone who is learning
He tried a new method of teaching where he doesn't lecture very much, just lets us work out problems and present on the board. I really liked the teaching style. He allows quiz corrections. Really fair when it comes to grades! Reccommended!
Best teacher I've had. It is a hard class, but if you are willing to learn, he is willing to help. I actually learned the material and not just for the test. Teaches good life-skills. He might be smelly, but the best teacher of my college career.
Br. Woodruff is one of the best professors I've ever had - he's the man. He is passionate about what he teaches and bends over backwards to help his students. He is experimenting with a problem- instead of lecture-based approach, so the students do most of the teaching with his clarifications. His classes are hard, but students learn tons.
Uses a new teaching method where you learn from the students which can be very confusing because normally most of the students don't understand the material since it hasn't been taught. Don't take his class unless you can commit a minimum of 10 hours a week to homework, 15-20 is more realistic, otherwise you won't understand what is being taught.
One of those sink or swim believers. Shouldn't everyone succeed? It's nice that he wants to try new approaches to teaching, but he needs to consult the education experts not previous experience or other math teachers. A PHD in math does not equal expert in education.
He is very knowledgable. He has his own book of problem set for the class. The students present the material every day but he steps in to help and clarify if needed. The concept is about trying to learn for yourself first and solidifying the material in class as we discuss it. It is time consuming but I loved the class. Present. Present. Present.
He knows what he's talking about, he just doesn't really lecture. The problem is his alternative structure of teaching. It might work for some students but I found myself doing all of the work on my own outside of class. I'm not even sure why we had class, but it is 100% mandatory to go.
Teach yourself what you haven't learned. You need to present about 10 times during the semester. Extremely helpful, he does teach the class, but he wants everyone to come prepared to present. Without a doubt in my mind he is the best MATH 215 teacher at BYUI. Take him and nobody else. He is hard, but the other teachers are harder.
He is a nice person, but he does not like to lecture. If you need to take Math 316 don't take it with him. He expects students to teach each other and does not realize that his teaching method is not successful.
Bro. Woodruff is a math genius. He loves what he does and wants you to love it too. While the tests and homework are sometimes difficult, he has a forgiving grading model and will do anything he can to help you understand the material. He won't hand you the answers, but makes you work for them, which makes is much more satisfying.
He works very hard to help you learn the concepts and apply them. He uses a different teaching style that avoids lecturing and is based on students working out of a problem set and then presenting their findings. It's effective but hard and requires a lot of time. If you can commit the time to do the homework then you wont regret taking this class!
This professor is amazing! He teaches using an inquiry based learning model which makes learning math much more applicable and satisfying to learn. He also lets you work on your mistakes to help solidify your learning from chapter to chapter. He is tough but if you work along and are consistent, you will learn a lot from his class.
He is a great professor! He really wants to help you understand the material and the big picture behind everything. He will push you to learn and to teach yourself but he is always available and excited to help you. I'd take any class I could from him.
He is the first math professor that has effectively delivered conceptually based education. There are very few homework problems and each one teaches important concepts. Any student who actually wants to learn the concepts and be able to know them long term will be able to. He has high expectations of the students, it's a 300 level math course.
I have never had a teacher who worked so hard for his students. He loves what he does and genuinely cares for his students. His teaching method is a little hard to get use to, but he feels it is the best way for students to learn. He is very understanding and willing to work with you if you are struggling. I absolutely recommend him!
Easily one of my favorite teachers. He is constantly developing his teaching method and improving it as he goes to better help students learn. His passion is helping students learn. He can lecture, but the more effective learning isn't "Monkey see, monkey do. It isn't a class for the lazy, you have to put effort into it, but you get a lot out.
I've taken this class twice. The first was taught conventionally, the second with him. He wrote his own text to improve comprehension, and it's a night and day difference from the other class. His makes so much more sense than the popular guessing method. I highly recommend him!
I have never had a professor who cares so deeply about his students. He takes upper-level classes just so he can make the course better apply what we learn to real life. This man is at once the most brilliant and humble man I've ever met. Math 215 made me hate math, and he helped me love it again. He is a wonderful teacher, and so willing to help.
This class is a very hard class. But Bro. Woodruff is amazing. if you do not want to put in the necessary amount of time, do not take this class. He is funny and you can go to him, if you ever have any questions. GREAT TEACHER
He is a very good teacher, he won't just give you an A. However he will help you to do well in the class and he helps motivate the class to do well. Probably my favorite teacher I've had in college. Definetly take his class.
He was very helpful and his class well organized. On top of all that he was very flexible with grading.
This course really wasn't that hard as long as you do the work, I liked him as a teacher.
Great teacher! Pretty easy and very nice.
I have never had teacher who cares more about the way the class learns. A lot of people say his class is very challenging, but I don't understand why? Study the keys to the quizzes and you'll get a good grade on the exams. I PROMISE he is not hard. I just paid attention to what HE said instead of what the students said and got a good grade.
really great teacher. He Has a different teaching method, but he researched methods that work. He's willing to help Individual students succeed.
Instead of lecture he uses Inquiry Based Learning, which I was skeptical of at first. After a while you will realize that it is a more fun and interactive way to learn. It really gives you a dynamite understanding of the material. You suddenly know WHY and HOW something works instead of just how to do it. I wish he could teach my other classes.
I take a class from Brother Woodruff every opportunity I can! If you're going to college to actually learn something, Brother Woodruff is the best teacher to have for mathematics. I highly recommend him!
He takes the learning model to a whole new level. There is literally ZERO instruction. He assigns homework from the book and the next day asks people to write the problem on the board which is how you get points, and how 100% of the class time is spent. That's it. I enjoyed math before I took this class. He made me hate math.
Tests are super hard, even with lots of studying. It's a good thing he allows retakes. I've never done this bad in a math class EVER. Don't like the way he teaches-too many tangents and not the material on the test. Puts in real life scenarios about where the math would be prevalent, but confusing on how to actually use it!
Bro Woodruff is an amazing teacher. He's great at teaching, but he's also willing to learn different ways to teach if it'll be effective for his students. He really listens to his students and is always willing to help if you ask for help. His tests are a little tough, but if you do all of the homework & keep studying, you'll do perfectly fine. :)
Brother Woodruff is the best math teacher I have ever had. He taught in a way I understood, though some students will still have a hard time comprehending the material. He covers a LOAD of material, and the tests are very difficult, though he grades on a special curve. There is a lot of participation, and that helped me understand the math greatly.
This class was the bane of my existence. I never went to class because Brother Woodruff was not helpful at all and most of how I learned the material was through the group work. The tests were hard and the class was stupid.
His teaching style is so different from other teachers which makes the class even harder. The math tutors won't even know how to do most of the math problems assigned every day. I though this class was super annoying because you would work so hard to understand then in class it would be explained in 10 seconds. A whole semester is that is tiring.
Tough class. He's very upfront about that from the beginning, says at the start he doesn't teach like other profs. I wouldn't have learned half as well with them. He wrote the text (free). If you struggle, he's in his office daily--I know students who nearly lived there. Also grading's on effort, kinda. He makes you work, but it all has a point.
This man is amazing. He made partial differential equation and their applications the most straightforward, useful subject ever. I was nervous going into a 400 level math class, but he made it so awesome. In his class I will warn you if you skip don't expect to pass. He talks about his tests in class and gives hints on what to do to best prepare.
THE best teacher I've had so far in my life--and I've liked all my math teachers since middle school. He stretches you, absolutely! But he makes the material interesting and cares about the students--literally studies every day how to better teach each class. Also very enjoyable personality! I'd take every math class from him if I could.
I really like Bro. Woodruff. He is really into this experiential learning thing which means no lectures, but he pulls it off well unlike other professors in the math department. He is always willing to help out and makes it nearly impossible to fail the class, but getting a good grade is tough because his tests are shockingly hard.
Brother Woodruff is a super nice guy but his teaching style did not work for me at all. He didn't do any lecturing or example problems which is how I learn math. This class was a completely self taught and if I had known this before I took him I would have rather just done it online to avoid sitting in class for 4 hours a week for no reason.
Brother Woodruff is amazing. Anyone who says otherwise didn't put the work in. His whole course is set up around practicing the problems in class and teaching each other. He lectures once a week, and works students through every problem. He's very understanding, allows retakes on exams. Explains material very clearly. Very passionate. Take it!
He's tough but not impossible. He teaches in a way that makes you get experiment with the math for yourself and thereby figure out the rules (not traditional lecture by any means). He expects you to put in 2 hours of homework for every hour of class. If you do that you will do great otherwise the class will be awful. PS get a tutor.
Awesome teacher, and in my opinion, the most qualified person to teach abstract algebra in the department. He's written his own problem sets that effectively guide you through the subject. He's always available to help you in his office. I highly recommend getting a study group or tutor because it's not an easy class.
Surprisingly abstract 2 is easier than abstract 1. Also we had pizza at least every other week. Not surprisingly Bro Woodruff knows the material very well. Expect to work 2 hours for every hour you spend in class so you can present. If you don't present consistently Bro Woodruff will make you feel very guilty (he's unusually good at it).
Loved his class. Usually half the class is spent with you practicing problems on the boards around the room in groups of three or four. He knows the content well and is really great at explaining complicated topics. He is there to help you succeed. Would definitely recommend anyone taking math 215 to take his course.
His class is graded by 3 things, Presentations, Quizzes, Test. You can make up quizzes easily, you present the HW problems each day. He has an excel sheet, randomizes and if he calls you, you present, you get a 3x5 notecard front and back for test, helpful. After each chapter, you make your own study guide in prep for test. Difficult, but LEARNED!
Brother Woodruff is awesome! His teaching style is revolutionary, as it requires you, the student, to think and figure out problems rather than teaching concepts or ideas and having you apply them. He has you present problems and work with groups in class, which really helps you learn and solidify things as well as learn things from other students.
He is the best math teacher here at byui. He makes class interesting and one time accidentally flicked us off.
Great Class! His teaching method is really different and makes math fun to learn. He teaches you the concepts, you do the work as a group, then you teach it to one another. Easy A if you do the work at home and understand the problems in class. You are only tested on what is taught, so no surprises on the test. One of the best math teachers ever!
Brother Woodruff is awesome!!! His teaching style is great! he wants you to pass the class but ultimately its up to you. The homework load is very light. Homework is mostly just to prove you are working for your grade. If you don't know the material then you might want to do more than the minimal homework requirements. Great experience!!
The responsibility to learn is in the student's hands. If you actually enjoy learning and are willing to put forth effort, you will succeed very well in this class. If you want to be spoon fed, DONT take this class. You will have a hard time and get mad at the teacher. But in the end you have nobody but yourself to blame.
This guy rocks. He is probably one of THE BEST teachers I have ever had. Loves questions, and knows why the math matters for your particular major. So just ask. Seriously, if you can, pick this guy. There's like 15 minutes of teaching and then 45 minutes of trying it for yourself with a group. He helps answer questions super well. Best Math teacher
Brother Woodruff is a good professor and cares about his students. The expectation is set to learn the information beforehand and come to class ready to apply it although Woodruff does his best in class to help clarify the context from the lessons. The majority of your grade is based off of 4 tests which weren't that bad.
He is absolutely the best Math teach I have ever had. He is amazing! His teaching style is great, he lets you retake tests. Homework is light, and I learned SO MUCH! However, it is up to the student to study and do the work. I wish he taught all math classes. He actually knows what he is talking about.
Ok I really like brother woodruff as a person, but what drove me nuts is that he literally does not teach you anything. He has you go and figure it out , come to class to see how other have done it and he will answer questions. He gives you no examples or anything beforehand though. If you can stand teaching yourself the whole class then go for it
I love this class! His style teaching is awesome.
Brother Woodruff's teaching style is all about hands on practice and learning. It is not typical but once I got the hang of it I loved it. He is super chill and understands pre-calculus well. Retakes allowed for every test except the final. No crazy hw assignments, just "work on what you need to work on" - at least 5 questions per night.
the best class i have taken ever. I love his teaching style because it worked well with how i feel like a lot of people learn. he is very much a non-lecture-heavy prof with an emphasis in class practice and self learning and teaching others. Doesn't give out graded homework but you still really need to do it if you want to pass the test
I always thought I was terrible at math. All that changed when I took Brother Woodruff. He teaches us what we need to know, then we work out practice problems with other students and talk together to figure it out. Never once did I feel behind or "dumb", Brother Woodruff was always willing to help. Homework is used to teach not to be graded on.
Bro Woodruff is great. Be ready for a different style of learning. This is a mastery based class. You essentially have unlimited trys to prove mastery on weekly quizes. Once you prove mastery you dont have to do it again. You absolutely have to present your work to pass, doesnt matter if your work is wrong. Easy pass, just follow the criteria.
There are projects that you have to spend a good amount of time on to be successful. He is an awesome teacher and fair grader. You don't feel like you are learning anything until you go to another class and realize how much you actually did learn. You may constantly feel like you don't know what's happening but that's the design of the class.
His method of teaching is to make you teach yourself. If you are expecting a teacher that will help you, you'd be better off looking somewhere else. The majority of class is just working in groups of your classmates. I get that this method of learning may work for some people, but I feel like a teacher should actually teach.
I've taken his Math 301 class, math 215, and TAed for his Math 109 class twice. He is awesome! He cares and helps you succeed and learn. For math 215, class time is structured very similarly every day. You practice problems as a class, in groups, and receive help when needed. You present homework throughout the semester. You do projects every unit
Brother Woodruff's teaching and grading styli is different. If you are okay with a non-traditional class room it will be great. Participation is part of your grade, so you will want to be in class. Exams are a mastery grading meaning you can keep trying questions in later exams to get a better grade on the exams. However, grading is more then exams
His teaching method is defiantly different than other math teachers. He doesn't grade homework but part of the grade is to present homework problems in class. His moto is "I don't care if you get it wrong, as long as you attempt it" best option for multi variable calc. no actually tests, but there is a weekly quiz that is open book.
He was lenient enough. Score at least a 3 or higher to claim an A. Grade Claim is how this class is graded. There is a clear rubric at the start of the semester of what you need to accomplish to claim an A. He is funny and taught us some useful and practical skills. Be aware that you will have 2 task and 1 case study due every week.
He's definitely the best math teacher I have ever had. It is a pretty self-directed class in the terms that there are no solid deadlines, but it also makes it really nice. 10/10 please take his class.
He was the worst professor I've ever met. I strongly recommend NOT taking this class, especially if you are not white. He doesn't teach anything, just writes down the equation on a whiteboard, and never takes care of students who are behind. I waste my time on this class
Brother Woodruff was an absolutely amazing professor his class was always my favorite! As long as you put in the work it's easy to get an A and his course is mastery based learning so you actually learn the material you need to.
Brother Woodruff is so much fun and I absolutely loved taking Precalculus with him. He only lectured once every week or two, so it was mostly working through problems with your peers at the chalkboards. Such a fun teacher and makes math very exciting.
MATH119 is weird, it's calculus mixed with statistics using a simple programming language called R. The homework is a bit of online stuff but mostly project based where you have to do a 3-4 problems in R and make a report on your calculations like a data scientist would. He's a good teacher that is always willing to help, though not always clear.
Brother Woodruff is AMAZING!!! He explains things really clearly and cracks jokes along the way. He really knows R and a lot of theory behind calculus!
Brother Woodruff has remarked multiple times that he chose to be a professor because he wants to make a positive impact on the education system, and he absolutely has. Math is something I have struggled with in the past, but thanks to Brother Woodruff's low-stress, mastery based grading and intelligent lecturing, I am finding myself enjoying math.
Wonderful! Brother Woodruff really cares about his students and it shows. If you put in the time you'll get the grade, no tests and no surprises.
Brother Woodruff is such a great teacher! Being able to learn from him has helped my skills in PreCalc grow so much! He's super funny and very approachable if you've got any questions! He teaches in a way that clears up any confusion and really goes in depth on the subjects helping you to understand it even better! His teaching style is very great!
Alright, Brother Woodruff is AWESOME! One thing to understand is that he doesn't teach in the "normal/traditional" manner. For this class, there are no standard tests and you have multiple tries on quizzes. If you want higher than a C, there are simple projects or lesson plans where you decide what you want to focus on or teach.
Absolutely one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He makes sure that if you don't know how the math is applied in the real world, that you will know. He is extremely lenient and merciful when it comes to late work.
Has hilarious dad jokes non stop throughout the course, and you'll probably only roll your eyes half the time. Willing to work with students until they understand the subject at hand, teaches in a very practical and useful way for the world outside of college. If it were possible I would leave a 7 star review, best teacher i have had.
Brother Woodruff is a very caring man, when it comes to how math is taught. I learned so much more here than in any high school class. He holds no judgement towards any race (only mentioning this because another review said he did). He explains topics very well and really prepares you for calc.
The clearest grading criteria of all time! You get the grade you deserve in this class. He will help you if you ask, but you get exactly what you work for from Brother Woodruff. REGISTER FOR HIM NOT SOMEONE ELSE!
He did a mastery based grading system and I learned a lot better with this particular set up.
Professor Woodruff makes math engaging and approachable. His low-stress, collaborative teaching style helped me improve my math skills. unstuck AI was a great supplement for study prep.
I've had 1.75 good math professors in my life and Ben Woodruff was 1.2 of them. His is the only math class I've ever had who actually cared more that I learned than that I checked the box. He structured the class very carefully to include forgiveness of missed assignments and improvement, resulting in real learning. Absolute breath of fresh air.
Brother Woodruff is an excellent professor! I was a little worried about going back into a Precalculus class after not having done any math for about 3-4 years, but he made the learning process 100% less stressful. He does not dock grades for late assignments, and uses a mastery approach which allows students to master math at their own pace.
He was one of my best professors. The class itself is pretty demanding, but it is very manageable if you go to class every day. Highly recommend him because he is great at teaching and very funny.
Don't listen to the bad reviews, those people just skipped class. Bro. Woodruff is the best math professor I've ever had. For class, he does several lecture days at the beginning of each unit demonstrating skills you'll need. The rest of the unit is short lecture with time to practice with peers. There's absolutely no reason you shouldn't get an A.
He knows us each by name and explains the material better than any of my other math teachers. He is hilarious and tells tons of dad jokes. He lectures at the beginning of each unit, then does 'brain gains' at the beginning of each class before having us work at the chalkboards. A symptom of this class includes an intense dislike for fractions
Brother Woodruff is the goat.
Prof Woodruff is an exceptional teacher. In a class of over 40 people he knew us all by name and cared about our success. He is one of my favorites by far and he honestly was made for this career of teaching and helping people. Each conversation I had with him was sincere and he really did his best to make sure we all succeed. He is simply awesome.
