Understands subject very well, but doesnt understand when people have difficulty!!! Not a people person and should only work in the lab and not teach
Great instructor. Very interresting
Outstanding instructor. Very clear and precise lectures. A lot of material but one of the best courses I have taken. Highly recommend this instructor.
Serious and smart. Some are intimidated by him, but it's just a show. No projects, but makes you study in detail.
Dont take him...hard grader, perfectionist on exam...better take it in college. he will F U anyway..
Some of his lectures were actually VERY interesting, but they were also EXTREMELY hard to follow much of the time. He tests you on the FINEST DETAILS, but the topics that he hammers really hard in lectures are not worth that many points. He's also very rude and does not say hello to anyone. And he gives you a death stare when you ask questions.
he teaches this class on a graudate level. Most teachers want you to pass. He on the other hand makes it very difficult to pass his class. He doesn't seem to realize most of us are college students with jobs and other priorities.
simply, DONot take him!!Too hard for you, take it at college... he doesnt like students, never smile, test are hard, need perfect answer
Hard, but if you put in the time, you will be successful! Make sure to read the lectures PRIOR to class or you will not be able to follow!Intelligient teacher, so it's hard for him to break it down simply. if you are willing to put in the time, you will do okay. Don't load up with hard classes though...you'll need extra time for this course!
One of the best in the department
I didn't like physiology until I took Dr. Yaspelkis. What people need to realize is that it's not a teachers job to be your best friend. It's their job to teach. and hes a damn good teacher. I learned the most from him out of all my kinesiology professors. Hes not gonna make it easy but you will be prepared for 446 and you will LEARN!
Doesn't care whether you pass or not. A hard nosed teacher that seems to have a power trip of some sort. Teaches it as though it was a Med school class.
Terrific Professor! He does teach the class at a graduate level but you will come out really knowing your stuff. Very intelligent professor - one of the best in the department.
Very good teacher!Although very hard the lectures are good. without the text book i would have been a dead fish. With careful studying, you should be okay. I got a C in the course. I woulda got an A but he deducted every single point he could for spelling mistakes.
simply horrible, take these classes CSULA, you will have better chance of learning and getting a good grade instead of listening to him talk your ears off for nothing ...
Not so bad if you did well in Human Physiology. Take the best notes you can. He moves pretty fast. He expects a lot from his students and you need to have a good base of knowledge. His testing is pretty straightforward and doesn't involve much application.
Good course. Hard, but it is fine if you did OK in human Phys. If you did not do OK in human phys you probably will not do well in this course. There is a lot of material in the course, which make it hard, but the Prof does an outstanding job lecturing Go to class , take good notes and listen to what he has to say. You will do OK. If
all the good comments written here are most likely written by him, I have yet hear anyone in class who liked him or thought he was good. lazy teacher, doesnt care about anything at all his office hours are the biggest waste of time. void him at all costs.
try to void him as much as possible .. he thinks he is second in command after God
HARD CLASS, he moves very fast and its hard to keep up. isnt the most helpful and doesnt really seem to care about students progress. four tests..he doesnt give any study guides not even for the final you have to do guesswork for tests, really dont recommend him
Good lectures- tests are right from material talked about in class - in fact several test questions were written on the board in class! Take good notes, read the book, go to class, ask questions and you'll be fine. If you did not do good in human phys you have a problem.
Dunno whats with all these bad reviews. This must reflect the caliber of students we get here at CSUN. Transfered here from PCC all the sciences classes i had there make this elementary. Your in college, take notes, study the book as the bible. The stuff on test is gonna be exactly whats from the book, he can't fabriate the physiology.
One of the hardest classes I have taken in the program but learned more! He is damn smart. His class is hard because this material is hard, its not an easy class. I studied more for this class than anything but it was the most interesting and applicable class to date. Tests are right from lecture and he is very willing to help in/out of class.
I took this class over the summer (6 weeks) and I have to admit that I worked very hard in this class. He speaks very fast and has to move quickly through the material. I recorded his lectures, went home and listened to the lectures again and typed my notes. I studied every single day and worked very hard but got a good grade. GO TO CLASS!!
He is one of the toughest graders that I have ever come across. He does move very fast and is not very willing to help those who can't keep up. However, he does pump you full of knowledge, and the subject is great. He knows what he is talking about so try to soak up as much as possible. If you're taking him, hold on to your hats. It's a bumpy ride!
Dr.Yaspeliks is by FAR the best professor in the Kinesiology Department. His presentations are exceptionally clear and he starts every class with an opportunity for anybody to ask questions. To the complainers: Put some effort into your education. YOU are the problem, not Dr Y. Perhaps college is not the right place for you.
Yaspelkis is one of the hardest professors I've had; but he does know his stuff. He expects a lot from his students. The best advice anyone can give you for any of his classes is to record the lectures. He does talk quickly, even during non-summer semesters. He doesn't follow the text books to the dot, but it's still a good idea to read them.
Had him last spring. If you study hard you will do fine. If you slack you will parish. Ask questions as much as you can because if you dont he will assume you know it. You will learn A LOT in relation to Kinisiology. Good luck!
This class is tough because the subject is tough but he knows the subject so well that he makes it very easy to learn. Just record the lectures and listen to them to study because all the test questions are taken directly from the lecture. I will take any class he teaches because he is by far the best professor I have ever had.
He knows the subject very well, but where he fall short is that his students don't know the subject nearly as well as he does. He doesn't post slides, goes through the lecture fast, and tends to disagree with the textbook he uses in the first half of the sem more than he admits. Hard with the grading. All I can say is 'Good luck'.
I absolutely loved this professor! You learn so much and he makes it very interesting. The subject itself is interesting but he makes it more interesting and is crystal clear BUT.. what's up with his exams? That's where everyone had trouble. He needs to remove the sequence and not be such a difficult grader! His grading is literally graduate lev.
As a former graduate student from his laboratory I can tell you that he is an exceptional mentor and instructor. While the material is complex and can be difficult to comprehend Professor Yaspelkis holds his students accountable. You are in his class to learn. You are near graduating. Yaspelkis does not sugar coat his class he prepares you for life
One of the best teachers I've ever had! The material is hard and there's a lot of it! But he makes it very interesting. Lectures are long, but again interesting. You have to study A LOT to pass the class but it was worth it, I would take him again.
Dr. Yaspelkis is one tough professor, but well worth it. I took his Kin 346 class in summer and survived. He is a tough grader and really wants his students to be clear with what he is teaching. DO NOT MISS CLASS. You will be lost and most likely fail, if lucky pass with a C. Best advice: go to class, record his lectures, read before class.
I really enjoyed this class. Yaspelkis is the perfect example of a great professor in my opinion. Yes he expects you to learn a lot and be able to apply it and he is a hard grader, but he is so knowledgeable and you will gain so much from his class. I would take him for other classes if he were teaching them. Keep up the awesome teaching!
Dr. Yaspelkis is an amazing professor. He is so intelligent and knows the material better than anyone. Do not be afraid of him.. he is so awesome. Go in to his office hours for help, if you do not review specific details of your responses after the first exam you will not improve. He is willing to help but you have to OWN the material
Very knowledgeable Proff! He's old school and REALLY wants you to work for your grade. Get the book and use the questions in the end of the chapter to review for the test. There are no trick questions in his class, everything is straight forwards but he wants very detailed and complete answers! Going to class is a must.
Very knowledgeable. Everything he teaches is research based. Have to study hard for exams. Always excited to teach. Ask him anything and he knows the answer; if not, he will find it for you. Got a B- on first test and C+ on second, 100% on group project and got an A in the class. You will learn a lot, especially if you love athletic performance.
Super brilliant but intimidating. He is very specific of what he wants on an exam and he does not give credit if you don't answer it the way he wants it. He doesn't post his slides online nor does he allow people to take pictures of it. Record the lectures and take great notes 'cause he does not agree with his powerpoint or books. 3tests,1project.
This Professor show very little care for his student. Gave us a Test a week before Final exam. Completely Canceled Office Hours. Takes 2 weeks to respond to emails. If it wasn't for this professor I would have loved this class. Don't recommend taking any class with this professor.
This Professor canceled his office hour! Took him a week to respond to a simple question. Even though I got an A this teacher made this year miserable for my self and classmates. Please avoid taking him if possible
Summer online session, it's a big mess. He recycles his old exams that aren't properly formatted making a tough subject harder. Class average was an "F" on the 1st exam. Grades based on 4 exams. If you dont listen to lecture you won't pass as he doesnt use the textbook. He's the kind of prof who teaches the same class for 25 years. Don't take him.
(2nd Time Taking Him) 1 of the most knowledgeable professors at CSUN, BUT he lacks the ability to translate the material in way to which his students can understand it. Lectures filled w/material so make sure to read chapters PRIOR to class. He OFTEN goes on tangents that're redundant & have no importance for exams. Can come off as condescending!
Beware !! Professor Yaspelkis is very knowledgeable, but he cannot teach his students. He goes of topic a lot and he talks about many things that are not even on the exam. His power points do not correlate to the test material. He really picky on what he wants on his written portions of the exam. Also, he doesn't seem to care for his students.
He is very knowledgeable in the topics covered in the course but somewhat lacks at conveying the information in a manner that is easy to understand. There are 4 tests including the final composing your course grade. Read the textbook before class, review the lectures after, the test is based off his lectures not the textbook.
Very tough grader. He wasnt clear about what to study or what he wanted for essay questions. 3 tests and a group presentation for the final. He is knowledgeable but isnt the best teacher. I wouldnt take him again.
Very hard class to pass, I wouldnt recommend this class to anyone. On the tests youre not able to go to previous questions once clicking next which was ridiculous. Seemed to care more keeping his exams safe than making the tests how theyre supposed to be. Seems like a decent class for in person meetings but zoom was a disaster.
Not good at explaining things and tends to go off track. If you don't keep up with the textbook readings you won't understand the material. On review days he doesn't go over his lectures only has students ask him questions, doesn't answer "easy" questions. Your grade is solely dependent on test scores and you can't go back to previous questions.
This professor is a gem! He knows the material so well, and is so knowledgeable in the field. The material is just hard! You really need to take time to sit with the material and understand it. You can't say this prof is a bad when the material is hard, it's a science class. Put in the work! Grade based off 3 exams, and 1 cumulative final.
Okay guys listen here, he is not as bad as what other students have said about him in the past. He does know material and it is actually interesting information. You have to show up to lecture or you will not pass. I recommend recording his lectures because during lectures there are times where he emphasizes a certain section therefore on exams.
This class is tough material but he is very knowledgeable. Transparent about expectations, what will be on exams & offers hints. Exams are MC, fill in the blank & free-response. Super lecture heavy, record his lectures because he will not post them. Grade is made up of 3 exams and 1 accumulative final. Honestly an underrated professor!
Very clear in lectures but lectures do not correlate to exams. Does not offer any other assignments besides Exams and offers helpful study sessions now for credit. No quizzes or papers but he expects you to write a lot on Exams and not enough time on exams with lockdown browser it's the worst. He doesnt curve to next grade letter. I passed!
So Im currently in Dr. Yaspelkis 346 online lecture and let me just say if you have the option for another teacher GET IN THAT CLASS. The required material I understand is difficult but how much material he expects you to be able to memorize and know in depth as a college student is extremely unacceptable. He expects you to know in DETAIL
Horrible professor, Only way to pass is attending PLF. Exam average was a D for every exam so that says a lot.
I'm sorry but this professor is not even good. He seems knowledgable but when it's time to take an exam, it just doesn't match with what he taught in class. People capped about him being a good professor. His PLF assistant would help us out WAYYY more compared to Yaspelkis. I wouldn't recommend taking him, so get another professor to save yourself.
Worst teacher! Stand-offish and doesn't care for students. Unapproachable, arrogant, snooty, and makes students feel dumb. Exam review lasts 10 minutes because everyone is scared to ask questions. Tells the whole class it's their fault for failing and "not studying enough" instead of recognizing it is his poor teaching. 3 exams and no assignments.
This professor was not good at all, do not take his class if you are a senior. He only give you exams with very little details on the lectures. No heads up or anything. And you have to do PLF which is extra time out of your time. In order to pass the class you have to attend PLF meetings.
He is by far the best professor I had at CSUN. Student whine and complain because they are slackers and probably do not belong in college in the first place. Yaspelkis is exceptionally clear, gives students plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and his exams are a very fair representation on the class material.
There are 3 non-cumulative exams (100 pts each), mc/fill-in-the-bank/free response, and 1 mc final (200 pts). He does not take roll, but he emphasizes things in lectures that are on the exams. PLF is worth 30pts and you have to go 2x per week to get the points. Record the lectures for your own review, he moves fast, and the lectures are not posted.
Yaspelkis is not an inviting person. His entire class is determined by exams and the final. He loads on information every lecture and expects you to memorize every detail he says. When you ask a question he gives sarcastic responses. He doesn't give enough time to finish the exams and saves the most point heavy question for last. **TAKE NOTES!!!**
Rude this guy shouldn't be teaching bad class enviorment. And thinks its funny that the whole class dosent understand him. Dont do it
Any kin 346 class is difficult but hes kinda funny. However, the tests are just too much to handle for me. :(
He is very lazy, he changed our in person class to online lecture and in person review for 30 minutes. He responds to questions sarcastically or rapidly and it is hard to process what he is saying.Makes his Teachers Aide do all of the work for him. If more than half the class fails that says more about the professor than us. I wish I had more words
This professor needs to get his ego checked. Personally I didn't learn anything from this class which really sucks. I know more about his previous students who he thinks he is some how responsible for part of their success than I do the material. You can't ask questions PLFs are a different class. Take anyone else. This guy swears he's the best.
Incredibly smart professor who has done this for a while, so he knows what he's doing. But he is just an insufferable, smug, miserable person. He should not be an undergrad professor. He is strict but fair. Just record the lectures and prepare for the written questions on the exam. I did NOT enjoy any part of this class.
Stay far far farrurr away from this guy. He's very smart and makes sure you know that He is smart but makes you feel really dumb. There are no assignments only 3 exams and a final. Very sarcastic so don't take it personally if he's rude to you or makes you feel small. I'm sorry if you have to take this class with him. Good luck!
Do not take this class. Stay away and choose another elective. For being an elective class, it was the hardest class I've taken at CSUN. His lectures do not relate to what he tests on. The tests are multiple choice with a couple of written questions and he grades the written so hard. Save yourself the stress and take a different elective.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Accidentally gave him a 5 on the last review but he deserves a 1
3 exams and no assignments do poorly on any and you will not get an A. He would not lecture about chapters in class and would have student workers run classes for him and do a lot of his other teaching duties. Would often just talk about baseball during class. Does not accommodate missed exams and would not respond to emails.
I never do rating on professors but this man deserves it.He expects you to know every little details memorized. 3 exams & nothing else (not even multiple choice).Lectures are very heavy and he talks as if we're experts at this subject. Not even enough time to complete the exams and high credit questions towards the end which is time consuming. RUN!
This is a terrible human being. He belittles his students and then expects for them to be on the same page as him. Save your sanity and money do not be part of this guys creepy joke.
All I have to say is that this teacher only teaches the material and doesn't teach to help students learn which is not affective for how information heavy this course is. Egotistical and brags how smart he is. Class is only based on four exams, best of luck trying to study for them bc he doesn't even provide study guides for them.
The worst kin teacher on campus. Save yourself the stress and avoid him at all costs.
No Study Guide, No extra Credit, No homework, Grade is ONLY 4 exams, only chance to do decent in this class is if you only focus on this and neglect other courses. Other professors in the department teaching the same class are far better trust me. Exams taken in person on a laptop you bring. Unforgiving written questions bring your exam grade down
If your looking for class with a professor that cares more about his baseball outfits than his students this is the professor for you! Tests aren't given with enough time to complete each question and never goes over a topic a second time. No study guides for any of the tests or final and he hides all notes and power points so you have no help
PLEASE follow the advice of the other students/counselors by not taking this professor. He is not a good educator and just provides you with a list of concepts to study. 4 tests. Get PLF advice for written questions, record every lecture, pay MASSIVE attention to any subject that comes up multiple times, is written on the board, or typed in red.
Why become a teacher if you don't teach. Worst person to take this class with. Definitely try to get another professor even if you have to wait a semester. Honestly so much stress for no reason.
Teaching style is based off PowerPoints. Most slides are graphs so you'll need to pay attention as he goes fast. Tutoring is highly recommended as it is a hard class no matter what. Rude and sarcastic. Makes students feel bad for asking simple material questions. Graded only by exams, easy F. Most failed professor by the way!
Honestly, the worst professor I've ever had. Isn't even a teacher, it's death by PowerPoint and there's nothing on the slides to give information on what he's even talking about. He's rude, doesn't give enough time on tests and is by far one of the toughest graders. I've had difficult classes, but not like this. Do NOT recommend.
This review is more for advice rather than critique. RECORD THE LECTURES. He will repeat what is important. Grade consists of 3 exams and 1 final and that's it. I recommend getting help from other students, professors, and online study sources! Yaspelkis as a person isn't the easiest to talk to, but get past the sarcasm and he will help if you ask!
Guy in the WORST teacher I've EVER SEEN. Retire him! 18% would take again? What a joke!!!!
Reviews give him a bad rep. Not as bad as everyone is making him seem. The material is hard and its a lot of information. Grade depends on 3 Exams and final.Record lectures and printout the power points and write notes directly on them.Doesn't dumb down material- he condenses it. He isn't rude- He has dry-sarcastic humor. Also Ask Qs :)
Go to lectures. Record. Attendance isn't mandatory, if you miss. You'll miss info that are on tests. Textbook isn't used, exams are based off lectures. Ask questions! Dr. Yaspelkis knows his stuff, but he's not going to hold your hand. He's super sarcastic but helpful. Grow thick skin. Apply effort, and study. Give bare minimum and you'll fail.
He isn't as bad as the reviews make him out to be. This is a hard class because the material isn't easy. I recommend you RECORD lectures. Go to lectures because he gives context clues about what will be on exam. Practice writing because there are short answers questions on the exams. Only 3 exams and a final so on review days ask questions.
Had Yaspelkis for 346 and 436 and he definitely enjoys 436 more. They are high level courses and he has high expectations for his students because he wants them to learn and do the work. He's tough in 346 because its a prereq for 446 where you really need to know your stuff. Study hard, go to lecture/office hours, understand instead of regurgitate
