WORST ENGLISH 4 TEACHER EVER!!!!! very tedious and gives useless work that hurts ones grades, difficult grader.

Worst English teacher ever! Do not take him. He will grade exceptionally hard even if you go to office hours. It takes 2 hours to get into his office, and when you do, you have to leave within 10 minutes. DO NOT TAKE HIM!

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Way too many handouts and homework assignments. Very, very harsh on his grading. Also, super annoying to listen to him talk during class lectures.

He is an awful teacher. Very nit picky when it comes to detailed papers. It is really tough to get a good grade on his essays. When a student says "the whole class failed," they're not lying. Much too hard of a class for a beginning English course. Don't take his class if you're not an English major.

Gives out a ton of homework and papers and is always late in grading them. He gives it back with incomplete feedback to force you to go to his office hours. His grading takes ages, took him three weeks just to give back a two page paper.

AVOID AVOID AVOID!!! I have never failed an English class before, let alone an essay. However, Professor Jones is one of the toughest professors I have had at UCR, and would not recommend to anyone looking to pass English on the first try. Much more work than the course description.

So much homework. Expect pop quizzes, readings and assignments due EVERY class time. I will say his office hours do help. If your planning on doing well in his class, go to his office hours regularly as you can use him to help you do well on your essays. If you get him, change the class ASAP or try again with someone else next quarter.

It felt like, not even high school, bu a middle school English class. He made everyone edit their papers a single way, no leniency. It was tedious and useless circling, underlining sentence clauses, etc. If you like freedom in your writing, and if you are already an excellent writer, you will hate this class because of the useless worksheets

Most tedious class I have ever taken. If you get this guy you're better off switching to that one 8am thats available. You would probably still get more rest if you did that. Even the simplest of things like annotating your own paper feels like a chore which accounts for a significant part of your grade.

its only week 2 and Im already tired of this professor. Like its so frustrating that it makes me want to pull my hair out. The class and the homework itself is very tedious and the way he talks in class is just ugh I want to drop this course but nothing else is open so Im forced to take this class. But yeah I dont recommend

honestly, Mr. Jones is the toughest English professor. He is never pleased with what you're writing. No matter how much you revise, it is not enough for him. He's very specific with grammar and will call you out on your papers. Never thought I would hate a class so much. He gives so many packets and grades according to what will please him. Avoid!!

The hardest professor I've ever taken, he grades every single thing and he is very tough in grading. Many students dropped within the first couple of weeks. I decided to stay in the class because I thought it would get better; however, I decided to C or NC the class because he handed out many assignments and didn't post them quickly. Avoid!

This is an English class so I expected a lot of reading and a couple papers. That's not what happened. It's worthless activity after worthless activity and he's never happy no matter how much effort you put in. Beware his charming and friendly demeanor- you can't make him like you enough to give you the grade you worked for. DO NOT TAKE.

Ive rewritten a basic essay for him 5 times bc we do not see eye to eye on it, and I've had this essay peer reviewed by one of the smartest grad students I've ever met and he still won't grade it bc it doesn't meet his criteria. So I'll go into his office hours and he'll say to do one thing then contradict it, don't take! week 10 & >half dropped!!

Worst English professor I have ever taken. I don't rate professors, but oh man I had to create an account just to rate this dude. His grading on essays is so biased. Even if you met all the criteria of the essay requirements, if he doesn't like the way you wrote your essay, you won't pass. Lots of homework, but they're all useless.

Honestly, I don't know where to begin. His office hours are a joke because there's always a line of people waiting to see him and when he finally does get to you, he just goes on tangents about the most stupid things. He makes you print out so many things for his class, just save the trees boomer. I bet he couldn't handle all the work he gives us.

Awful im fairly certain every good review he has he wrote himself as there is no way any student could possible enjoy him as his professor. Mr jones if u see this wtf are u doing u became and english prof to make life hell for college students who are only take ur trash class for breadth requirement. Stop expecting us to be grad school level englis

I looked at this before signing up for his class and was not going to take it but I needed the credit. I ended up dropping the course because of his crazy hard grading and RIDICULOUS amounts of hw and readings in the textbook. The papers are way to hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! its not worth the stress

this class is like highschool all over again except with a ridiculous amount of grunt work and a professor that will never be satisfied with your papers. He's very passionate about english, but so passionate that it feels like an upper div english major class, this class will suck the life and time out of you, away from your own major classes. Bad!

If you are prone to stress, depression, etc... you will definitely be triggered by this professor. He gives great feedback and does encourage his students, unfortunately, none of this helps. No matter how well you follow his directions he will give you a 0. Take your avg English grade and drop it by a letter or two if you want to know how you'd do.

As much as I hate him, I can honestly say he made me a better writer. Although do not take this dude. He is AWFUL. Assignment descriptions are often not accurate to what he is looking for. I am pre med, and this is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. HIs critiques are good but he expects a lot more than what should be at a 1c level

Absolutely psychotic teacher. He constantly goes on about how students turn in "high school papers", notice how the positive reviews here rant about how if you don't turn in high school papers you'll pass, and they suspiciously talk in the third person about "Jones".

Very Specific with what he wants in his essays and is never satisfied. Expects too much for it being a lower division class. Is pretty rude in his commentary and feedback. Says he is there for you when you need help but just drags you on your papers. MADE US WRITE NOT 4 BUT 5 ESSAYS IN ONE QUARTER. Don't ever take his class.

I had a discord server with 24 people in his class, I think there were about 26 or so people overall. On the first paper, everyone said that they received a c-. Except for a Chinese guy who had been failed. There were only 6 attending this class when I dropped this course. No lectures or correspondence. Prepare to resubmit each assignment 5 times.

I usually get As on papers and I am a thorough student, but in this class that doesn't matter because he'll find something wrong with ANYTHING you turn in, for fun. This is a freshmen English course and I was expecting to, idk, learn!? But no, all you get is a grown man crushing your paper because it gives him an ego boost. Super disappointing.

please avoid this professor at all costs. the way he grades your assignments is absolutely terrible and he will take off points or give you no credit for the smallest mistakes. makes you resubmit work for just small mistakes and gave me the most horrible experience and anxiety. not worth it. his teaching style sucks. take someone else

I have always been a good writer, even at the college level. But for some reason, this guy is never satisfied with anything. Hell always find a way to bring you down. His prompts on essays are SO UNCLEAR and hell find anything to nit pick you on. Even went to tutoring and my tutor was having a hard time figuring out what he wanted!! AVOID

I hate him. He ruined my 4.0 gpa. Expects everyone to be an English major when we are all taking this class as a requirement. Take any other English professor to save yourself from disappointment and frustration. I mean it, take anyone else or wait next quarter.

First of all, this man gives out like 4-5 essays a quarter with confusing prompts. He gives out very rude feedback and half of the time it's not even helpful. He talks about things in class that doesn't connect to the class material. This is also a low English class but he expects us to write as if we're English majors. It's not worth the stress.

For every draft paper that we turn in he gives audio feedback on things that he wants you to revise. I listened to this audio recording for HOURS yet he has the audacity to tell me that I didn't listen to it after I turned in the final draft! I even added things to my paper that he said WORD FOR WORD! It showed me that he didn't respect me at all.

DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING. When he grades papers, he doesn't explain anything; he repeats the same thing. For revisions, he only looks at the first paragraph and that's it so if you turn in a paper you will most likely get a lousy score he doesn't write if anything is wrong in the essay. Take another teacher if u can

His class is all about writing essays and he hopes that you write like an English prodigy. He even isn't fair about grading, and he even looks for the smallest mistake and calls you out for that minor mistake. Even going to office hours won't even help, as his instructions aren't even affective at all.

He seems to forget that this is literally English 1 - beginner's English. After he left me a TEN MINUTE voice message of feedback for my rough draft, I listened to the entire thing and fixed everything he critiqued, only for him to still give me a 75 on the essay, without any feedback except for the first paragraph. Don't take this class with him.

He forgot that it was an English 04 class. There are two essays due every week and read a whole bunch of papers/books and best part is you will know your grade. Don't ever take this class like. I went to his office hours and he just talked about himself the whole time. He's work makes no sense and a very confusing class.

I am going to tell you straight up, do not take this class. Believe me when I tell you, do not ignore these posts about this professor. Content is okay but he will make your life much harderrrrrr. Everytime you ask for help he will respond with "It is written in the instructions." His instructions are NEVER clear and hard to understand.

bruh. this class gave me a gray hair for the first time literally... claims he grades by the rubric but he grades subjectively .. making me contemplate dropping out deveras. if u see that u have him DROP IT u can take the class later it's not worth it.

terrible. just awful. do not waste your money on this prof and do yourself a service by just dropping the class, you can always take it some other time. if you are in desperate need of taking this class, just be aware that he is an extremely unfair grader and his little audio files that he leaves as feedback are extremely unhelpful. run if you can.

Felt very confused this entire quarter. Everything has to be under his standards and rules. Very rough grader; would rather put a 0/100 than an actual grade when missing a small component of a paper. Everything must be perfect, or else it will not pass. Do not recommend taking him for English 1A.

DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS Not exaggerating, very difficult to understand assignment descriptions, and expects to too much of students for a beginner level course. Not worth ur time & energy bc either way you'll barely pass or fail. I swear as soon as I get to class, I want to leave. If your essay is not absolutely perfect, pls expect a C or lower :(

Don't let his cool personality fool you at the beginning of the quarter. Every week is something new and it isn't a small assignment either. If you are only an average writer, don't take this guys class. He expects you to know how to write as an English major even though the class is just for credits. Please don't take this guys class

im in this class right now writing this. he's a extremely hard grader and grades based on his own terms, which are those of an english major. acts like he's super understanding but will make you feel insanely stupid if you don't write like a professional. would drop this class but i don't want a w on my transcript. drop if you get him as a teacher.

He is probably the worst professor I have ever had. He was so rude and very nit-picky on grading. I would drop the class and/or look for another professor if I were you.

Do NOT take a class with this professor! He's seems okay at first but he is the worst. He is a super tough grader and grades as if we're English majors when in reality we just need this class for credit. He has weird stories that don't make any sense to read. The stories really made me feel uncomfortable and he is very nit-picky with essays.

I don't know how I got an A. This professor made me have a strong dislike to English. Dude made everyone feel weird with his stories. Actually the most stress I have ever been, i legit feel like I have PTSD from this guy. Drop this class if you have it, it's not even worth it. The people giving him good ratings have to be trolling.

Horrible professor. Genuinely the worst teacher I've had. Gives a huge amount of homework and does not explain how said work should be completed. Will not grade your work if it doesn't meet his criteria, will just input zeros instead. Avoid for your own mental health. Stories are weird and can even be very disturbing and hard to read. Avoid!!

Professor Benedict Jones is the worst professor at UCR. He doesn't explain assignments, gives excessive homework, and assigns disturbing readings with violent themes. He grades like we're publishing in the New York Times instead of taking his course for credit. He will not grade your work if not perfect. Avoid him if you value your GPA and sanity.

Horrible professor. I'm not sure what his grading criteria is but unless you're an English major don't expect to get a great grade in this class. Very nit-picky with grading. Assigns many weird/difficult assignments outside of writing in class. His readings are unusual and even disturbing. Drop to avoid the stress.

Avoid at all costs. Horrible professor, expects absolute perfection and has the most strict requirements for homework assignments. He also leaves audio feedback, so on any given homework assignment you'll be hearing a 12 minute long audio feedback on every aspect of your work. I still don't know how I got a B. Overall not worth it. Avoid.

Professor Jones is by far, bar none the worst professor I have ever had. I usually enjoy english classes, but the way he runs his class is horrible. Not only do you need to buy a textbook for the class, he also WROTE HIS OWN, and you can tell. Way too many assignments. Grades way too hard. More than half my class was gone by the 2nd week. Horrible.

do not take this professor's class. for a gen ed class, he gave far too much work and was so incredibly picky about the tiniest things. the required reading for the vast majority of the course is his own book (!!) and he gives you two big writing assignments AND several individual filler assignments. He always has work due on Saturday evenings.

Took this class in Spring 2024, and im still triggered by it over a year later. The worst professor I ever had!! For all the incoming freshman, pls drop this class. He's weird & all the reviews are true. He puts zeros rather than actually grading ur paper. I hate him, cause of him my GPA dropped. Does weird audio reviews, makes us all feel un-comfy

This is the worst Professor at UCR. He does not teach at all and he expects students to write like Professionals. He provides rubrics for the in lab essays but even if you get 5/5 on each criteria it does not mean your paper is good. He gives quizzes in class weekly. His instructions are confusing and his Canvas its a MESS. You will get a bad grade

This professor is extremely disorganized and assigns excessive reading with constant quizzes. His grading is slow but very harsh, and his comments rarely help. The class is confusing, the instructions are unclear, and requiring his own textbook only adds to the frustration. Avoid if possible. Look for another professor if possible.

Assigned work over the holidays and posts homework on weekends to makes it due the day you come to class. Simply do not take this class unless you like suffering with papers due almost everyday at the time you have or 5 PM. He'll also grade your work like he holds years worth of grudges against you.

Professor Jones is the worst professor. Do not take him at ALL. Considering I believe I'm fairly good at writing, but he just makes you feel so stupid and grades everything terribly if you make one tiny mistake. I have to read, print and prepare so much before class, and this is a breadth course. Please take another professor just NOT him. S/NC I

Do not enroll. If he was assigned to you for LC block, be prepared to cry. He will not give you a clear answer when you ask for help. There is a clear TA disconnection with him too because the TA is also confused on what he expects from the students. He'll make you buy the $100+ textbook only to have his pop quizzes focus on his personal textbook.

When you think of nightmare fuel, think of taking this class taught by him. Find another professor if you can. He gives you pop quizzes that are a moonshot away from the readings he assigned, go off track when you ask for help, and simply is the toughest grader. Run if you can.

This is a terrible teacher, he had the class grades open for everyone to see and everyone was failing the class with the highest grade in the class being a 75. He makes this class impossible to pass.

I stopped going because there was no point in giving my all for a C+ at best when I could take it with a different professor and get an A. He grades insanely hard. Avoid at all costs.

Don't even know how I ended with a B but im just glad im done with this class. Hardest teacher I have ever experienced so far with grading and his level of expectation in the class is insane for writing. Don't take the class if you don't need to or be prepared to really work for it and be mentally exhausted :)
