Best bio professor in the department. TAKE HIM!! He is very honest with what he expects and creates a very welcoming environment in the classroom. Read the book for background information and the quizzes. It helps a lot during lecture. Tests are straight forward with a few critical thinking questions.
Hes good. Hes power points are excellent but you still have to read the book
Dr kemp is very helpful funny and VERY SMART! HE IS THE BEST PROF AT MARQUETTE SO FAR!! his exams are not very easy and are not hard there is a Blance in the type of questions he asks. He said he is going to teach fall2014 and he seems so excited about it. to get an A you should read the book understand the materials and never MEMOTIZE! TAKE HIM!!!
Professor Kemp definitely knows what he's talking about. This semester (Fall 2014), he was really driving home critical thinking thus leading to His tests being very difficult but he did give a regrade which was extremely helpful. He encourages greatly to go to office hours and is extremely helpful when you go. You have to read read read!
Professor Kemp is extremely difficult but wants to work with his students to help you learn how to study in college. The averages are often very low (the last exam was in the 50's), but he offers re-grades to get points back and bring the average up. Kemp is one of the toughest biology teachers, but you will come away having learned a lot.
Merely showing up to his class won't give you an A, you really need to work for it. He is a very nice and hilarious guy, but makes his tests insanly hard for his own private experiment which he will explain to you. The regrade policy is awesome, getting a lot (up to 50%) of your points back and lets you relearn the material.

He is an awesome professor with an awesome teaching philosophy but that doesn't help your grade. I'm taking him again because he really wants us to learn but seriously you have to work your behind off + to get even close to an AB. Exams are LONG and just painful, but regrades are pretty sweet! Work hard.
Tests are SO HARD but the regrades boosted my grade so much. He's a great teacher and so funny. Lectures are boring and the reading sucks. Lots of online homework. Just be ready to work really hard and you should get above a B. Overall AWESOME teacher, take him.
This year was Professor Kemp's first year teaching Bio 1001 but he is used to upper level biology lab students. It was hard to adjust to his tests because of the level of difficulty, but he has very good lectures and is always willing to go over a test or answer any questions. Having him helped me for future science classes.
Difficult class. He did hold office hours in which he was better at explaining concepts. Lots of online homework. The tests are horrible-filled with grammatical errors and illegible diagrams and very confusing wording. Regrades were given for every test because the class average never was about 55. Avoid taking him if possible.
Put in the work and show interests in this class and you should do fine. I never took any notes in class or while reading the book. Put in time to understand the concepts and not memorize the material.
Dr. Kemp is an amazing professor, but it takes a while to realize it. Learning how to study for his tests are key, because they are extremely difficult. He really does care about his students' success and is great to talk to in office hours. As hard as this class was, I can look back and say I learned a lot. I definitely recommend Dr. Kemp.
Kemp's class was tough, but I learned SO incredibly much! His tests are extremely challenging. He offers a regrade after each test so that his class' average matches the other sections. He makes lecture interesting, and does whatever he can to help you! Kemp has an amazing personality too! I am taking him next semester! Would 100% recommend!
wonderful person, very intelligent, nicest professor I've had but his tests are insanely hard. You get to regrade them but he really makes you work for it
Kemp is a really smart guy and a good professor but his tests are really hard. More about knowing the whole picture than about memorizing the little things.
Very nice guy. To get an A in his course, you need to be able to read the book throughout the semester. Also, his exam questions require critical reading.
Kemp is a really nice and helpful professor. Go to his office hours; he's always ready to help. His is not always clear. His exams are impossible mainly because they are very poorly worded, confusing, and very long. For this reason, I would not take his class again.
His lectures are interesting and I think he's a great professor and super nice, but I refuse to take his class again for the sole reason that his tests are nearly impossible. I have tried EVERYTHING and spend more time on this one class than all of my others combined and I'm barely managing a C.
Tests are extremely difficult: 40-50 MC questions that are all application-based. Several questions with "A&B" and "All of the above." Expects you to know literally everything about everything. Must read the book. Only reason I took his class twice was bc he has 50% regrades bc the avg is always 50-60%, but this semester he does way lower regrades
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. He will tank your grade. Tests are impossible and the regrades are not nearly enough to save your grade anymore. Take any other professor, even if he has bad reviews, if your priority is getting good grades then please choose ANYONE else.
First off, his tests are the worst. On the flip side, he offers regrades to get points back. There aren't many resources outside of the lecture and textbook, but his office hours can be very beneficial. The discussions are a waste of time, just go and get participation points. He does love his job, students generally like him and he's a cool guy.
Prof kemp is a great professor. He makes class very engaging and learning biology is much easier. His tests are difficult. Don't freak out when you get an awful grade. He offers re-grades on exams that make it worth it! Would definitely recommend him as professor!
Class was impossible. Teaches one thing but puts random stuff on the test. Tests are extremely long and probably the hardest tests you will take in your life. I worked my ass off and got a C. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS if you want a good grade. On another note he's a great guy, genuinely loves biology, but sucks at teaching intro level bio.
If you read the book and pay attention in lectures you will 100% beat the curve on tests. It also doesn't hurt to do some outside research on google to comprehend certain things better. I received an AB in his class and did not spend every waking moment studying. Just put in the work that's all. He also is a funny guy which is a huge plus.
There is a lot of work in this class, but if you attend lectures and do the readings and online quizzes, you will survive. The exams usually average 55%, but there is a regrade a week after the exam that gives you the chance to earn back up to 45% of the points you missed. The course ends up being very curved at the semester.
The tests in this class were very hard. I would recommend taking bennet, schallpi, or eddinger over KEMP!!!
I love Kemp! I recommend him because he is very interesting and is very good at talking about his slides. He will help you with any questions you have in the course. I love this guy! Take him! He curves his exams by A LOT! So it's impossible to fail an exam in his class because the curve saves you. Favorite teacher! I would take again with him!
Lectures are pointless. Everything is according to the books, test are poorly written and confusing. Most test averages are 50-55% before regrade. Would take another professor over him in a heartbeat.
Kemp is a great teacher and an all around amazing guy. His exams are quite tough, but his regrades are life savers. He tests mainly on his lectures, so class attendance is recommended. So glad I chose to take Kemp!
Kemp is tough but is my favorite professor at Marquette. He really likes to challenge his students. Expect a ton of "your evil roommate" questions, and questions that will make you apply what you know to get the right answer. His regrades will save your life, so take them seriously. and get used to seeing 50% on your tests. Do your readings.
Kemp is an excellent professor. His office hours are very helpful & he is very understanding. Yes, his tests are tough, but his regrades are grade savers. Attendance &homework also are big grade boosters. Put in the work &you'll be fine. The textbook is helpful for a general outline, but tests are mainly application & lectures help more.
Kemp's lectures seemed disorganized at times, but were still helpful in doing well in the class. His tests are free response with both short and long answer questions. They are tough but if you put in the time and effort an A is entirely possible. Weekly online homework and quizzes are pretty tough. Office hours are very useful too.
His tests are SOOOOOOO hard! Like the averages on his tests are 55% and he's happy when that's the average!! Luckily he gives you a regrade which helps you gain back 45% of the points you missed, and he curves the class at the end of the semester as well.
Kemp is by far my favorite teacher! He genuinely adores biology and is super fun in lecture. I didn't read the book unless I needed clarification on a subject and it worked out great. Also, he genuinely cares for his students and the application based questions are a huge help in future courses. Go to office hours bc he's helpful and super fun! :)
Be warned: the tests are HARD, but this actually helps you though, there is ALWAYS a huge curve at the end. He is the best BIOL 1001/1002 professor because he makes sure you really know the material. You will get out of this class what you put in. Really funny, amazing lecturer, helpful, and overall really cool guy. Can't recommend him more.
Dr. Kemp is one of the nicest professors that I had at Marquette and is willing to help you if you seek it. With that said, his tests are very tough and will require a lot of studying if you are a slow learner like me. However, there are many other ways to get your grade up and he curves the grading scale significantly at the end of the semester.
Definitely take Kemp! While a lot of the material was new to me, Kemp is a great lecturer and makes tough, potentially boring topics interesting. The tests were very challenging, but he offers regrades that can give back 40% of the points missed.
Kemp is a really nice guy, but lectures can be confusing as he isn't the greatest at getting his thoughts across. His office hours are the best though, and anything that's not clear during lecture is cleared up there. He's super funny and very friendly, one of the nicest professors I've met so far at Marquette.
Kemp's class is tough, especially his tests, but he's one of the best professors I had all year and I chose to take him for both semesters of bio. He's incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about biology, and is accessible outside of class to help students. Although his class is hard, getting an A is possible, and he will help in any way he can.
Kemp is a bit all over the place, but in an inspirational/ energetic way. He has a lot of passion and if you can get on board with that you will love this class. He wants you to UNDERSTAND the material, which is great, however the tests are really hard because you have to explain your reasoning and thought processes - there's not one right answer.
Kemp is one of the most amazing professors you will come across here at Marquette. His lectures are so inspiring, thought provoking and very enjoyable. As for the exams, they are pure hell. He is very indepth and serious about his material. I had to drop this class last year due to poor performance/pure difficulty. I respect him but I had to drop.
Kemp often goes off on tangents that don't relate to the class during lecture. He doesn't go into specific details and often tells you to look at the "big picture" even though he tests you on the the nitty-gritty details. There are reading quizes due on D2L every other day and you learn more from the book than you do from lecture.
Kemp challenges the way students approach learning, which is hard to get used to, but I ended up learning so much from taking his class. Expect daily reading and quizzes, weekly homework assignments, and very difficult tests. Each test has a regrade, so as long as you're above average, it's fine. He's nice and pretty funny though. Sometimes cranky.
Funny guy. His lectures are not so great because he doesn't go very deep on the material. His tests are confusing and poorly written.
Kemp is a truly awesome teacher. He challenges the students to actually understand material and biological processes, not just memorize it. If you want a good grade you will have to work for it. He is extremely caring and genuine and you can tell that he really loves his job. Tests and homework are difficult, but stick with it!!
Great guy that gives a bunch of examples during the lecture. If you don't show up, you probably won't do good on the tests. BTW, his tests are super tough. his tests are notorious for being tough. BUT HE HAS MASSIVE CURVES and he makes you earn your points back in class. super awesome guy, and homework quizzes are taken before every lecture GOOGLE!
Kemp is a really great guy, he is nice and very genuine. His class is difficult, but if you read the material and do the homework you should be fine. His lectures focus on the big picture, but his tests are very detail oriented so you have to be ready to read the text carefully and study alot.
His lectures are interesting and gives you the slides which is helpful. There were reading quizes due online before every lecture and homework quizzes due online once a week. Some answers are online but still hard to get 100%. Tests are so hard it's stupid. Get used to 40% class averages but he throws huge curves on the exams and final grades.
Tough teacher, if you put in the work you'll get the grade you want
Kemp is a super awesome professor, and is genuinely passionate about teaching. While the tests are super tough, he really wants his students to learn, rather than memorize.
Dr. Kemp was one of the nicest professors I had my first semester at Marquette. He is more than willing to help you out as long as you are willing to put the work in. GO TO OFFICE HOURS and make sure he knows who you are. Tests are super hard but there is a huge curve. The averages are low but if you stay at or above the average you'll get a B.
Prof. Kemp gives a hard class but is also very passionate about his work. They way he gives his lectures inspires you to work hard. Once you get the hang of it, it doesn't really matter. He turned out to be one of my favorite professors.
Professor Kemp cares a lot about what he is teaching, and his passion shows through his lectures. His tests are hard and you have to do a good amount of work for the class, but the regrades as well as the curve at the end of the class will help out. He was one of my favorite professors this semester, and would highly recommend.
I was extremely nervous for Prof. Kemp's class at the beginning of the semester & was worried that I would not do well. While his tests are hard, you really learn how to think and critically solve tough questions. He is extremely caring, hardworking, kind, and tries to relate to all of his students. I would highly recommend taking him to anyone!
Professor Kemp is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. He wants you to work hard and succeed in his class. He is hilarious and our class is always laughing. His tests are hard, but he gives you the chance to earn points back after every test. I would recommend his class to anyone willing to do the work necessary, I promise it's worth it
Test questions are not based off memorization from the textbook or lecture. The questions are content based, and are about general mechanisms and overall concepts.
Kemp is great. He's super funny and entertaining in lecture. He cares alot about the students. His class is not an easy A, but it's attainable. His tests are all questions on big picture stuff, not little memorization. Good class though.
The tests are really hard, but on the plus side if you know half the stuff and can guess 20% of the rest that's a 60 which is basically an A- with a curve. Kemp was a total G, 5/5 would take again
Look, I know you're here because you're about to be a freshman and don't know which bio 1001 teacher to take. This man right here is the one you want. The lectures are always really fun and if you don't study for a test it's cool because everyone else is guessing too. So what are ya waiting for? Get up on out there and register for Kemp, ya scamp
Professor Kemp is one of the best professors I've had at Marquette. His tests are very hard, however, my grades got progressively better throughout the semester. I learned so much in his class. His lectures are very engaging (because he's funny), but he skips through slides really fast, so you have to pay attention to what he says. Read the book!
Dr. Kemp is a great bio prof. His tests can be difficult (mostly application), but he gives you online homework with old test questions to prepare and he has a huge curve for the class so you'll get the grade you deserve. His lectures are incredibly funny and engaging! Very good professor if you took bio in high school and have a good foundation
Professor Kemp is by far my favorite professor that I have had at Marquette so far. He makes you work hard for your grade, but at the end you will actually understand the material really well. Go to his office hours and follow the learning objectives of each lecture!
Prof. Kemp is very funny, lecture is usually very interesting. Tests are difficult, very application based, *BUT* have no fear! The curve is huge and super helpful, as is regrade. Google the reading quiz questions and you'll do well on them. Use the "need to know" take aways to study for test and review hmwk questions and you'll be golden.
Dr. Kemp is a great professor. He wants to make sure you understand the big picture instead of just reading and memorizing the text. There are weekly homework assignments and online reading quizzes for each lecture. Use these as an opportunity to boost your grade because you can retake them until you do well. The tests are very hard . Take Kemp!
Honestly, BIOL 1001/1002 is not easy and neither are his classes, but if you actually want something out of a class he helps immensely. He not teaching solely the material, but to help you actually figure out how you personally learn. Freshman year is tough yeah, but in the long run it helps a lot. Take his class.
Dr. Kemp is a really tough professor but his class is worth it. You really learn the material because his tests are completely application based- no straight memorization questions. Test averages are almost always under 65%, but he majorly curves the class at the end to ensure an even grading distribution. Overall, tough exams but great professor.
Don't be afraid to take Kemp. Lots of people say his intro bio courses are too difficult and not worth the time, but they're not. You learn to think about the information in a practical, application-based way. He is always willing to answer questions and is super helpful in office hours. You will come out of this class glad that you took it.
Take him. Tests are hard but there is a regrade that helps boost your grade and a curve at the end of the class. He prepares you for the rest of your college career. Lectures are engaging and office hours are super helpful. By far my favorite professor I've had.
Dr. Kemp was able to push me in a way that no other class has pushed me before. He focuses on actually UNDERSTANDING the material, rather than just memorizing the facts. You CAN do well in this class, you just have to WANT to! Hope to have him next semester! (But yes, his exams will destroy your soul)
Yes, his class is difficult, but Kemp makes it doable if you are willing to put in the work. If you aren't willing to put in the time and effort to learn the material and ask questions, you may not get the grade you're hoping for. But if you are willing to put in the work, he will always be willing to help you succeed. I would highly recommend him!
Dr. Kemp was an excellent professor. Although his tests are fairly hard as long as you finish above the average( which was about a 50) you get a B. I changed my major to biological sciences because of him and I am taking him again for bio 1002. His lectures are both informative and funny but sometimes drag especially on a Friday.
Kemp makes learning bio somewhat entertaining. He makes the lectures easy to listen to and really demonstrates that he wants the best for his students. Are you gonna have to work hard? Yeah, but you go to college so what else do you expect? The tests seem difficult and don't get much easier, but he gives you the opportunity to earn points back.
His classes are definitely not easy but he does a great job at inspiring and encouraging his students to try their best. The best advice I can give is to do all of his homework, have study sessions with your friends and get into arguments with each other about what the right answer is, and DONT be too nervous. That will only hold you back.
Kemp is a great professor but his tests are notoriously difficult, but not impossible if you show up to class and pay attention. Going to office hours pays off. Very challenging class, but worth it.
Dr. Kemp makes this class overly complicated, very frustrating and difficult to any first semester college freshman that takes this class. His class is NOT about bio, it's about learning his special testing language. You can try to use every resource he gives (office hours, lectures etc) but still find yourself not succeeding. DO NOT take Kemp!!
Whoever thinks he is a good professor has lost their minds. Seems like a nice guy but his class is impossible and is ridiculously hard for no reason. He thinks failing is the best way to learn but its hard to learn when you dont know why you are failing -- his test questions don't makes sense. No matter how long I study, I still guess on half of it
Professor Kemp is a very funny man and is very fair and allows many opportunities to improve your test grades. The lecture is mandatory for attendance points. His tests are known to be very hard, so get ready to study a lot.
Kemp has moments where he explains concepts better than pretty much anyone else. But he also has moments where he rushes and doesn't explain what's expected of you. That being said you can still succeed, but you need to work very hard to do so, just like BIOL 1001. Not the best, but he is definitely experienced.
Dr. Kemp gives difficult lectures, but as long as you listen you can easily understand the material that he presents. Plus, he is hilarious to listen to.
This course is for non-science majors and it was his first time teaching it. He made it as interesting as he could for people who didn't care about this class and had a fun time doing it. Only a couple online discussions and quizzes. Final exam was optional. Would definitely recommend taking this course with him! Better than other sciences
Dr. Kemp is a really great guy and a great professor. Really, this course is hard no matter who you have for a professor. Yes his tests are hard but they are not impossible. Study the old test questions, go to office hours, and ask questions if you have them, because he is always willing to help students succeed, so take advantage of that!
Don't be discouraged by some of the rough comments you see on Kemp. He is one of the kindest men I have met. Yes, his tests are hard but in the field of science they have to be because you really have to know how tom think through things. There will be a huge learning curve in his class but just work to improve, it is possible. I had a B in 1001.
Hard content, Kemp is super super understanding. People say things about him just because the class is hard and his tests are difficult. Find a way to study and use old tests. Definitely sign up for tutoring. Never studied for a test, got a C+, so that's expected. Do the homework & Reading quizzes, get old tests and use them for this. Study!
Kemp, what a guy,. Great choice for Bio 1001, clear, to the point. Lectures are straight forqrd as can be with presenting basic bio stuff. Lectures are super interesting and fascinating, makes boring stuff fun to learn about, not tradiaotnal learning you would think but great. Uses iClicker which is interactive. For Bio1001 tkae him, youll love it.
Dr. Kemp is probably the best teacher I've had. His exams test your abilities to problem solve versus memorize, and his lectures reflect real world scenarios. Overall, his curriculum and exams are challenging, but it will only get you to work harder in the future.
Great professor overall. His tests are kinda difficult but they push you to get to know the material more, I do think that some exams were little flawed but the class itself was great. I loved attending class and Kemp keeps everything super interesting. His lectures are hilarious and you can tell he really cares about us retaining the information.
one of my favorite professors at Marquette. not an easy professor, but I can hands down say he inspired me and solidified my love for biology. you have to put in work for his class, but you will get the hang of it. learning to handle his tests made me feel like I could handle any test. his office hours are extremely helpful!!
