He is soooooo great! He knows what he is talking about, knows how to handle students and at the end of the course- we went out as a class for pizza and ...he is the best! Well worth taking him, best best chem teacher!

A great professor! you will learn alot from him and YES you get to eat pizza and drink soda after class for fun. he knows his material and knows how to teach them properly. explains clearly of the subject matter. moderator for the science department. cool filipino! hehe like me! =)

This professor is the best I have this semester. His explaination and understanding of the content is quite clear and he comes up with the most amusing tangents to keep the class's attention. So far it seems if your willing to put forth the little effort required to succeed in this class you can come out with a fair grade from Dr. Kalaw.

Had Dr. Kalaw for both Organic Chem I & II. His class is challenging, but the lectures are very fun & interesting. Plus he gives lots of extra credits and assignments to help you get a a good grade. Personality wise- friendly, funny, caring, thoughful, understanding- Overall an awesome Professor!!!!

Dr. Kalaw is a wonderful teacher. Very kind-hearted, personable, & genuinely wants his students to excel--in his class, life, career aspirations. Granted, Organic Chemistry requires independent learning; Dr. Kalaw helps us learn through applying real-life examples & making sure lab assignments reinforces lecture materials. Labs were really cool!!

Dr. Kalaw is a wonderful professor--very personable & cares about the students' success. The material itself is a bit difficult, but he explains it well, and covers EVERYTHING you will need to know for the PCAT, MCAT, DAT, etc. He encourages hard work, and always has office hours. BEST sense of humor around. I'm taking 207 specifically with him!

I like the way dr. kalaw teaches because he teaches the material in a way a student can understand and be able to grasp the concept. He is also easy to talk to during office hours. Futhermore, he challenges his student to become better by making them think.

Very intelligent, very caring, very involved teacher. He makes learning fun and dynamic. I took orgo 1&2 with him and didn't nod off once! Which is amazing for a tired over-worked me.

Dr. Kalaw is a great professor!Very knowledgeable of chemistry. He makes his lectures understandable. He is patient and really makes sure you understand the material. He is funny during 4-hr lectures so that keeps us awake. He motivates us to work hard, move on and get our degrees. I highly recommend him. I will take his class again.

I have never enjoyed chemistry the way I did last summer. Dr. Kalaw's lectures in Organic Chemistry were so dynamic I never slept a bit. The materials covered were challenging. I like the group discussions and board work. I will take his class again.

Dr.Kalaw is a nice person.However, i have some doubt about his teaching efficeincy. In the class he made us laugh but most of the time it never helped you in grade.And he has been teaching for 20 years so far but still made silly mistakes that really ridiculious.However,i got A but i wont recomend him for anyone

I am in my third year of Pharmacy School at UIC. I completed Organic Chemistry at Wright with Dr. Kalaw. Dr. Kalaw not only taught excellent chemistry, but he motivated me to pursue my ultimate goal. He is a great professor! He prepared me well for the PharmD program.

Dr. Kalaw translated the language of organic chemistry into english for me. He is very approachable and made chemistry very comprehensible. I would strongly suggest his class to anyone who wants to work in the medical field or just wants to understand chemistry and its real world applications.

I would not recommend Prof. Kalaw for anyone who wants to learn the material. The problem with this class is that he doesn't return student work. You won't know what you have on your quizzes or tests. Also, he tends to go too fast in lectures where he uses powerpoint or his notes. I have also seen him scream at students in the class during lab.

Take him in the summer, he would be much easier! Great professor overall, he knows the material very well, and he knows how to make you swallow the material properly and easily. He test you nothing else but his notes. Make sure you read EVERYTHING in his notes before test,you will definitely get an A!! He's super funny and smart too!Love him!!!

Not the best for summer Orgo, but then again who is. He skims through the most important material for the exit exam, we spent the majority on material that wasnt even on the final. Sometimes he would put material we didnt cover on exams. I have no comparison, i would say hes confusing and goes too fast at times. But if you like humor, hes your guy.

Dr. Kalaw is a great teacher! He was my teacher in Organic Chem I. He really cares about his students and very reasonable. He makes sure that you to learn the material in order to pass the course. He does not like absenteeism. He is funny and approachable. I will take his class again.

He is very understanding and has great sense of humor. He sure knows his stuff and very passionate about chemistry. I took him for Orgo II and Bio-Chem. He is the kind of professor who is willing to support you in all way possible to be successful. All you need to do is show interest. Exams and quizzes are reasonable if you study.

Dr. Kalaw is a great professor and an expert in the field of chemistry and biochemistry. His lectures are clear and contain the core concepts necessary for exams and admissions tests. I took a PCAT test in Jul 2012 and got 93% in a chemistry section--all thanks to Dr. Kalaw.He is fair, very helpful and has an individual approach to each student!!!

Dr. Kalaw is definitely my favorite chemistry teacher. Although lectures are long, it goes by fast because he makes it fun. As expected, to get an A, be a serious student and study hard. He goes through the problem step-by-step and challenges us as well. The labs are easy to mess up on so take your time and plan things out.

Dr. Kalaw is an excellent professor. I took him last summer. If you dont like to study, do not take him. Students must have their own notes during lectures. Do not sleep during lectures, he knows! He really cares about his students and want him to succeed. I recommend him highly!

I have several problems with this professor. #1. He gives extremely long exams(3hrs). #2. He dose not hand your work back quickly enough (doesn't grade the group work quick enough so you can't rely on studying off of it). #3. He doesn't answer lecture questions during lab day. #4. Does not put grades on black board till the end of the semester.

super difficult grader. Takes off points for smallest things such as not showing that the bond is directly connected to Carbon instead of Hydrogen. Needs to give his students some slack.

Look this class isn't easy, but you probably don't expect it to be. Dr Kalaw is an excellent teacher. He goes through everything and typically emphasizes on the parts students have trouble with. Sometimes he rushes through material when we get behind. His test are long, like 3-4 hrs, but there is a lot of material. For organic take Dr. Kalaw.

Amazing professor who makes the most difficult subject in undergraduate education tolerable. Very tough class, but if you're taking it, you know it's supposed to be. Having Dr. Kalaw teach it to you is your best chance at success. He also was my pre-med advisor and wrote a letter of recommendation for me. I am now in medical school and doing well

I am currently a medical student and doing clinical at Jackson's Hospital in Chicago. Without Dr. Kalaw I would never be able to find interest in Science. I'm currently a senior at a 4-yr college. Dr Kalaw is not just a smart professor, he's the type who goes extra miles to ensure that students understand the material. He has students' interest at heart. His office is open and he's always willing to help. He challenges, encourages, and guides you in the right career path. He's a great mentor!

Great professor and mentor. He was my teacher in orgo I that I needed to go to PhD program in Physical Therapy. His passion and commitment for chemistry is very infectious. Dr Kalaw is not a difficult professor, OChem is an abstract subject, therefore no matter who teaches it, it's conceptually challenging. Dr Kalaw does everything to make it easier to understand. He's very clear about the grading scale and the work expected. Take him if you want to understand the material and do well in grad school.

Because ochem can be very challenging, Dr. Kalaw is always willing to answer questions in class and his office is all open to students. Dr. Kalaw's class has to be my worst college experiences thus far. I am extremely surprisedshocked at all the positive feedback. This man is nothing like what I read about before taking his class. I'm a straight A student and work very hard in every class. He is rude, immature, very unclear, and always 20-30 minutes late to class. Terrible!

Awful professor. I trusted the people that rated him good and that was the worst decision I have made in my college experience. I'm surprised he has good rating? Perhaps he rates himself? I'm an A student. But it was impossible to get an A in his class. He's unclear, confusing, and has a bad attitude. Comes to class late and never returns work.

This teacher is the absolute worst. If you are taking him for Chem 201, STAY AWAY! He seems somewhat annoyed teaching a low level Chem class. He needs to be in a lab somewhere or teaching at a very high university level. His tests are 2-3 hours long, his grading is VERY unclear, he is very unapproachable, berates you if you want to ask a question.

Do not believe the reviews on here!! As a student who has a 3.7 GPA, this has to be the worst teacher I have had. He wastes class time constantly, exams are impossible to finish, makes easy concepts incredibly confusing. You will leave class every week feeling incredibly frustrated and confused. DO NOT TAKE HIM! YOU'LL BE SORRY!

He has got to be the worst professor at Wright college! I really think this guy rates himself. Please don't take him! I had to drop his class. He's very rude, never returns lab reports, has extremely long exams, loses class time, makes you feel stupid, and unapprochable! Half of the time he talks about non-chemistry things. How's he a professor!!??

Benito cares about his students, the lectures are very clear. A dedicated professor that prepared the class for the exit exam, the reason why his tests are seemingly impossible; you have to be fast. He is funny in his lectures too, always trying to make analogies with the younger crowd. I hate Chemistry but, Benito made it alright. 1010

Dr. Kalaw might have been a great professor prior to this semester, but as of right now, he is absolutely horrendous. I have learned nothing in this guys class. He is a joke. The school really needs to look into this guys teaching methods and the way he speaks to his students. Tests are ridiculous, you don't get anything graded back. Terrible.

He is a great person, horrible teacher. There are tests,(4 of them) and he lets you see them for a couple minutes (with him) and thats it. you can't never keep the tests which I find horrible, I like keeping my tests and using it as a study guide for the finals. you can clearly see who he likes, and who he doesn't like.

This was my first year of college and Dr. Kalaw has to be the worst teacher I have ever had. If this is what college is all about, I can see why students drop out. I pretty much learned all the material on my own (through videos online). He is VERY intimidating. I never raised my hand once, afraid that he would berate me. Stay away from this guy.

Don't take this teacher!! I'm warning you now. His tests are SO long and difficult to finish, sometimes impossible, he never returns anything back to you, doesn't even let you see your tests. How are you supposed to know if you are doing the work correctly. Be prepared to learn everything on your own.

Before taking this class, I was absolutely terrified of getting back into chemistry. However, Dr. Kalaw managed to change my entire opinion on chemistry. I am excited to take future chemistry classes with him. While the tests are a bit challenging, I found thag the more I practiced the easier the material got. Take his class! Very entertaining!

He is a tough professor, but stick with him and you'll be okay. He seems complicated because he over-prepares students for the tests. His tests ARE long, and can be difficult, but if you use the material he gives you, it'll be okay. He is always willing to help those in need, and makes funny jokes that can help long lectures seem more digestible.

Great Professor. Always willing to help. Never skip class. Materials are hard and you won't learn it on your own. He explains material clearly during lecture so never miss class. There are lots of group study which counts for a grade. Tests are tough because they are long, but materials are all taught in class. Get organized!!

Dr. Kalaw is one of the best professor's I've had. I learned a lot from his class. He prepares you for undergrad and beyond. He is not easy, he won't give you grades if you are lazy. If you don't study for his class or do the group studies he gives don't expect to get a A or B. Practice is key in Dr. Kalaw's class. He is tough but its worth it.

I used to hate chemistry before taking this class. I red reviews and chose Dr. Kalaw. It was the best choice. He is not only very clear, but guides you perfectly in your career path. Hard to pass the class? Absolutely NOT.... You will miserably fail in big Universities!!! Some people have no idea what studying means and just want a piece of paper..

First off, chem 201 was not meant to be an easy class, so if you're not willing to put in some work, good luck. Dr. Kalaw was charismatic, concise, and very helpful . Im handing you the keys; Study hard for exams, don't miss group studies, don't miss labs, and you will be golden. Stick with the class and work hard and you shouldn't have a problem.

Dr. Kalaw is not easy and certainly don't expect to pass the class if you don't study or practice. Is it worth it? Absolutely. Dr. Kalaw gives great examples to understand the hardest concepts. He is the best professor I've ever had. He also cares for his students, he is a great listener.

I took Dr. Kalaw for both gen and organic Chem. He is good at explaining his materials and gives great examples for students to understand any particular concept. His exams might be long and tough but he prepares for undergrad and beyond. He has been the only professor I've seen so far that understand and cares for his students a lot. Amazing guy.

Dr Kalaw is a very good professor. I am marveled by some of these reviews. if you do not pass DR Kalaw's class, you are not putting any effort at all. Dr Kalaw givens so many extra credit on both exams and quizzes. it is hard not to pass his class. Yes, his exams are long but nothing that you should not know. Read his notes. Review his quizzes.

I feel bad for anyone that believes the good reviews and signs up for his class. You will regret it and then be stuck in a semester with a terrible teacher. I did very well in his class but would never wish this man on my worst enemy. Be prepared to learn everything on your own.

Dr. Kalaw really knows the subject matter & uses great humor to get concepts across! There is always extra credit & curved grading along with dropping the lowest test score. Showing up to class & doing practice problems on your own is what will get your through this class. If you have poor study habits than go back to high school this is college!

If you don't want to study and get an easy A, sure you will not pass this class. He is so passionate about chemistry and willing to help anytime. Does he give long exams? Yes! And people who complain about long and difficult exams will miserably fail in big universities. He advises excellently about your future path career, so I strongly recommend.

Expect to study if you haven't had Chemistry. Some of the exams are long, but he give a TON of extra credit! He is very wise, makes Chemistry fun and is hilarious. He also advises excellently about your future path career, and is extremely fair with all of the students. Choose "the blue pill" (Matrix) and partake in class to earn yourself an A.

I feel most educators can present the basics of a first sem. science course like CH 201. Where prof. Kalaw really shines is in all the extras he brings. His knowledge of both the academic and professional world allows him to provide great college and career advice--very inspirational too. His humor makes lecture a joy. He will help you EARN an A!

He is all over the place when he teaches but you get used to that. Expect group work, class examples, and quiz problems to be on the exams! He tries to relate what he teaches to real life cases which helps. I found him to be a good prof but if you do not study on your own you will not pass. Read chapters before exams! STUDY EVERY SINGLE DAY! Funny.

I TOOK Dr Kalaw for Chem 201 and he is the BEST! I always look forward to coming into his class. He is very nice and very helpful as long as he also see you working hard to pass his class. His test are hard so you have to pay attention to his lectures because his lectures are everything. Lab works matters too. attendance is important.

He rambles. I studied on my own and read the book and got a very easy A. He has a couple useful tidbits that I learned in class, but in general he is a very confusing teacher. Half of the class he spends telling personal stories, then rushes through what he actually needs to tell. Nice enough guy, but not a good teacher.

The class seemed like a nightmare at first but if you bare with him till midterm he will help you IF you try hard. His lectures are all over the place. You HAVE to study on your own! I didn't use the book at all, i found lectures on Youtube. Gives extra credit and is really helpfull before exams. LONG tests, but some questions he takes from the HW

Make sure you understand and repeatedly do the quizzes, group studies, re-write notes, and any other homework given before taking the exam because he reuses notes for most of his written problems. the textbook homework problems are also helpful for more practice. if you are an A-B student, this class shouldn't be too bad, you can probably get an A

Dr. Kalaw explains complex concepts with diligence and patience in layman terms, correlates it to present day issues in the field of medical science, while occasionally infusing interesting personal stories. Make sure you attend class, go through his recommended list of practice problems, participated in class and join a study group.

Horrible teacher. Never take him unless you know your topic well, because he does not explain really well and he goes over the subject really fast. I will never take him again. It was Horrible!! i like all my professors but this is the least one that i liked.

If you go to wright, he is the best you're going to do as far as orgo professors go. Make sure to study on your own and seek out help at the tutoring center. You can get a good grade for sure, but if you ACTUALLY want to learn the material..... not so sure

Dr Kalaw is very intelligent man. Has has the knowledge and field experience. With that being said He might be good teaching orgo, but if you are taking chem201 stay away. I had a feeling that this class was too easy and too boring for him. His exams covered things we did not cover in class. I would not recomend him for chem201

These positive reviews have me stuck in a class with a really awful professor. He does not explain concepts well at all and our first test was 100 questions long, mostly written and took over 3 hours. I'm a straight A student and I got a poor grade on our first exam. I'm really unhappy with him so far and not at all looking forward to the rest.

If you enjoy 3 hour long written tests, he's fantastic. Only 4 tests, however they are 150 points each and 3 hours long, which is ridiculous. He's probably the worst professor that I have ever had.

The most intelligent and hilarious professor I've ever had. He explains material thoroughly, but you still need to study. Read the material/slides, take notes, and make and honest effort to learn/understand material (it's Chemistry- you can't just memorize like in Bio). Quizes/exams are fair, and comprised of lecture and practice problem material.

Professor Kalaw is very hard, but very fair. I thought I was failing the whole class and I ended up doing well. He appreciates hard work and will reward it in the end. Show up to class, do your best, and you should be fine. Tests are extremely difficult so study hard! He is not a very good teacher, and should probably retire but he is nice.

If I could go back in time and change my professor for this class, I would. I have never hated going to class more until I took this class. He makes absolutely no sense. I took organic chemistry part I with this professor and absolutely enjoyed it. He knows the subject very well and answers all the questions you have. Prof. Kalaw is also very fair when it comes to giving you a final grade. If you don't understand anything in the beginning of the semester just make sure to put in some hard work and show it!

Prof. Kalaw is a very interesting man! He is very knowledgeable and has an excellent idea of what he is teaching. At times he does seem to veer off topic, but sometimes those are the best conversations. You can tell that he had some trouble adjusting to online learning, but overall did a great job. At first it was okay, however near the end of the semester, instead of teaching he started playing YouTube videos for most of the class. We had four exams, he stated the fourth exam would be optional and if you took it, it would replace your lowest score out of the three prior exams. I decided not to take it and got a fat zero.

I am trying to obtain my Doctor of Pharmacy so I chose Wright to take Chem 205 and Chem 207 because Dr. KalawI heard many good things from his students who are successsful at UIC, Midwestern, Roosevelt, and Wisconsin. The worst professor I ever had. Hard to understand, shows a lot of videos, and expects you to know the subject. Wants an explanation for everything plus the whole layout of the answer. Kalaw was honestly a super fun and good prof. I took him in spring of 22 for orgo 1. The class is hard, long, and challenging but kalaw made it fun and provided you with all the resources you need. My best advice is to participate and ask questions. Kalaw easily recognizes when you participate and respect him. Show up and do your work and ur fine.
