He knows his stuff but I wouldn't take him again because he did say some offensive comments about the education in the area. The class just died after that.
He is a really nice guy. You dont have to attend class everyday, as long as you copy the notes the next. The only thing you do in class is just sit and listen or sit and take notes. He doesnt reqire any assignments at all but the only two test are so, so. Just as long as you study the next everything is good. He isnt a touph grader and he gives out
Made really stupid comments about our intellect and then wondered why no one participated. The guy is not to bright and needs to get some training in teaching and learning
Good professor, dedicated to the subject, the book is easy to read, requires a small research paper. Test are easy and gives a review beforhand, easy course, if you fail you din't study.

Awesome teacher....very funny and his lectures are very easy to comprehend. His tests are kind of hard but if you study and write great notes all should be fine.

cool teacher very fun! if you like the sub. he gives you alot of insight. really enjoyed his class. test are alright kinda hard but he gives a curve so your grade is not that bad. really cool guy knows his stuff.
he only gives three test, one essay, and a quiz for extra credit. but his test have to be in when, who, how, what, why and the significance that it had in history
He is a great professor, you just have to take notes and his tests are kinda easy just study the main things he talks about. He is fair. Take him!
Dr. Allen is a good teacher, he makes you understand the material. His lectures are like telling a story so you dont realy forget it. His test are easy to understand. take his class!!
dont take him it suck and its boring
Great professor, has a pation for history and it comes through. Test are a little challenging but if you take good notes and study u'll b fine.Never assigns homework besides the essay which is only two to three pgs and he provides the material u'll need. Love this teacher!!!
Dr. Allen's classis like story telling, his passion for history is amazing. Exams are all essay form. Never any homework. However you will need to study, but come on its a college class, you want the grade? I like his point of view in things. Recommended!
even though i took this class for only 4 weeks SS I, the professor was very clear and very well managed. It was not hard even though it was alot of writing but only had one final exam and two quizzes. there was only threee assignments. I really liked this professor.
Great professor. You will need to take a lot of good notes. He covers a lot but everything he tests on is straight from his lectures which cover a lot of what is in the book. I did use the book quite a bit for clarification but learned a lot and enjoyed being in his class.
Great teacher. I took him for history two. Knows so much and makes lectures easy to remember. Take notes and study and you'll be fine. Tests are straight from his lecture.
took his online class. three assignment questions all detailed answers of questions and definitions.3 discussion boards on all 3 readings.must know what you are writing about.MUST interact with other students. 2 tests, one of them is essay.the other reading.nice guy but alittle arrogant when responding to your questions.got an easy B.two thumbs up!
I like history,Dr. Allen teaches it as story telling, without being bias.Take notes and extra notes you will need them for your test and quizes,no need for a book as long as you listen and study. He gives no homework, which is really GREAT just one big assignment but you will have enough time.It might seem hard at first but it ends well, I got an A!
Dr. Allen is awsome! I took him for World Civs 1 and I got a B. He is a great teacher you just gotta make sure you pay attention.
This class was awesome! I never really liked history before taking this class, but I must say after taking his class I LOVE HISTORY! You can tell that he really loves and has a passion for history! He lectures the entire class but it is not boring at all. Just take a lot of notes and review them for the exams. Good luck! :)
I took Dr. Allen online for 1302 and he was pretty easy. I liked the class and I learned a lot. He is an awesome professor!!
ONLINE CLASS - Horrible professor. He takes forever to reply to anything, and he doesn't give enough time to finish the test. (the final was 5 questions related to history, that needed to be typed, and be very detailed. For this you only get 35 minutes. The quizzes are the same. 33 questions and 25 min!!)
i took his online spring class, and i will not B taking him again. The learning modules are easy, but quizzes are redonkulous. He also take forever to reply. I pass the class but will not be taking him for Hist-2
great professor, easy tests and great lectures. You will pass if you study and give your own effort. If you really want to learn about mexican-american history or just taking it cause you need this class, take him he really knows his stuff.
great Professor. He really knows and enjoys History. I have taken both courses. I will take another.
This class was the best ever! I never really liked history before but his lectures are so interesting and he is so helpful! You can tell that he really loves and has a passion for history! I guarantee you that you will learn!!take a lot of notes and review them for the exams. He is by far the best professor in college!
uh, no. Really if you like reading the whole constitution and writing who, what, where, why, when, how. details after details about everything on every exam perfect for you. his study guides are pretty much useless. i dont believe hes a good teacher maybe an average teacher depends on the student and his rating tricked me on getting him thanks alot
He is a great teacher he gives lots of background during his lectures. He goes over the material multiple times, & yes he asks for who what where when why, but you should know because he gives all the info, he does not leave anything out. He expects you to learn something. Not many assignments but, you cant be lazy b/c all exams are essay style.
Overall he is not a hard proffesor. You must pay attention in class in order to get a passing grade. This isn't high school and if you work for for it the grade will reflect. He pretty much gives the answers for all test in lecture. All you need to do is be present and take notes.
The BEST professor. If he writes it on the dry erase, copy it. You NEEd it. He gives about five or six assignments one of which is the Midterm and Final both Written and two written/typed assignments both short He gives you your moneies worth. He gives you a solid foundation and you cannot leave his class without having more questions than answers
ONLINE CLASS - This professor takes 3 days or more to reply if you ever need help. His essay rules for this course are draconian and the quizzes have 30-40mins with at least 55 questions. On top of that, the study guide does not help either. The ratings also tricked me into having this class for online. I would definitely not recommend.
I was mislead by the ratings. He does have an abundance of knowledge but I didn't find it helpful when it came to the exam. I would record his lectures and take notes all class period and when it came to the test the BP was stuff i never heard of. I even tried reading it up on the book and online and had no luck! Too stressful so I dropped.
I am a great student. Dr. Allen is not a great teacher. He is arrogant and really does not care if you understand History at all. His exams are the worst ever! I would NEVER take him again.
Really he is great teacher overall, gives good amount of extra credit and at the end of the course he will let you choose to stay with your grade before the final exam, or take the final which is a really an easy essay. Be prepared to take a lot of notes and pay attention to the films and readings. Awesome guy by the way.
This class is pretty easy class online. Since day one he has all the assignments open for you to complete at your own speed. He does grade a bit tough if you do not use quotes off of the bookreading assignments. Other than that it is an easy class and easy A if you complete the assignments on time. He also gives extra credit so that also helps.
He posts the entire content online so you can work at your own pace, but no explanation of what he expects from you as far as writing answers goes. I am an excellent writer and never got a perfect score from him. I am an A student and on the Presidents list, except for this semester because he gave me a B. My first in 3 years of school.
He is such an amazing professor. He is very passionate about History, and you really learn a lot. Exams are more like essays. Not a hard class, but you really do need to show up everyday, and take notes. He gives some opportunities to get extra credit. Don't expect an A if you don't work for it. Really helpful, and would always answer to my emails.
Dr. Allen is an amazing professor, very passionate about the subject!! Taking notes is good as a review (just copy what he writes on the board and you'll be fine) exams are essays and he gives you more than enough time to do them. Small readings but nothing too difficult. Very sad he doesn't teach 1302 I DEFIANTLY RECOMMEND HIM!!
Never shows up to class. I liked him, but he's always cancelling. Very unorganized. But he was nice.
The professor was never helpful. Also, he was never clear in anything from homework assignments, or test, or how to turn in assignments. His blackboard was so confusing, he was never organized. The worst history professor in STC do not take him. In all his lectures he brings the subject about sexual activity. Very unprofessional in his class.
DO NOT take it.
Great Professor, all the work is on blackboard since day one there's no excuses for you not to finish his work on time. Also, he gives you notes for test and assignments. I can't not lie there were a little bit challenging but not impossible to pass. I got an" A" even when I didn't put that much effort on it. I totally recommend him!
I love his lectures, BUT expect 2 quizzes, 2 assignments(essays), midterm(essay), 1 research paper, final (essay). Everything 9 pages or more!!!!!!!!!!!! :/ it was hard
I honestly was scared of this professor. He received some harsh reviews on here. This class isn't as bad as some people say it is. Dr. Allen gives good feedback, so be sure to pay attention to it. As others have said you have to WORK for your grade. Don't expect to be handed an easy A or B. Overall this class was pretty good.
By far, my favorite professor ever!! Prior to taking this professor, I had dropped history twice. But Allen was amazing! His lectures were so entertaining, just be sure to type out all the notes. He gives us four textbook assignments in which we must answer questions from the textbook which he gives you for free. There are no tests, but essays.
You have to work to get an a or b. He gave you a month to do one assignment 4 chapters, 5 or 6 questions in each chapter and you have to right at least one paragraph for questions. Sometimes more than the paragraphs it all depends on the question. 3 Asgnts which consists on 4 chapters each, one discussion and a quiz/monthly. finalessay
Dr. Allen was a great professor, will definitely take him again! He supplies you the textbook via BB and he gives the best lectures. He's not so heavy on attendance and doesn't really care what you do, as long as you turn in your work. Know what you're talking about in your essay questions and he will undoubtedly pass you.
He is a good proffesor you actually learn yes there are 3 disscusion's but you will have time to do them work hard and get ready to feel brain smart.
he doesn't care what you're doing he left everything on bb but he confused a lot. Bad teacher... thinking about dropping his class
very easy teacher easy A if you actually read and do your assignments will not fail you if you try. he gives you about a month to complete your assignment and a week to complete test. no reason why anyone should fail other than those who are lazy
He lays it all out on the first day that it is a very intense course. Don't take if you have a busy schedule. If you do badly on any assignment/quiz it largely effects your grade. All quizzes and tests online allow a very small amount of time to answer, 5-7 chapter assignments + 2-3 quizzes are covered weekly. He provided all the reading material.
Awesome professor. Lectures are very interesting and gives a lot of information. Offers different perspectives regarding the same events. Open-ended homework and open-ended exams are due at the same time. Gives plenty of time to complete assignment. Clear cut on what he expects as your answer to the homework and exams. Must read every chapter.
Dr. Allen class is super interesting and awesome. in the other hand the assignments are kind of hard if you leave it until last minute. I would recommend this class for people responsible, since its is a lot of reading and writing as well. plus you don't need to buy the book, he provides it in blackboard. Everything is take-home so is always a plus
He's very informative , provides great lectures and is easy to reach outside of class. No book needed.
Awesomeness!!
Amazing professor, he knows his history, i recommend this class to the students that like history, and are willing to interact in the class discussions. You have three essay exams plus the final which is also an essay exam, you have three video/documentary reviews and three chapter review exams. He makes you work for your grade. Awesome professor.
Took him online and it was too much work! I would spend 3-4 hours every other day doing homework! Its 3 modules each week.
Online class:3 modules, each due in one month. "EACH" module consisted of 5 chapters with critical thinking questions, 2-4 videos-write 5 main topics on each, a discussion, and a quiz. All that in each module so get ready to read and spend long hours on computer. one final short answer essay. Quizzes had 35 ques. with only 25min. needed more time
I like it
Online class:3 modules, each due in one month. So DON't Procrastinate "EACH" module consisted of 5 chapters with critical thinking questions, 2-4 videos-write 5 main topics on each, and a quiz. get ready to read and spend long hours on computer.
No book needed he provides. Your assignments are given to you online, more or less they consist of 5 chapters you answer 1-2 question for each chapter and then have to watch 40-50 min documentaries (3-4) he gives you enough time to complete each module like 2 1/2 weeks, dont procrastinate! you wont regret taking him, easy class
There was so much work
Do not take this prof unless you have tons of free time or are good at writing papers and like to read. His 3 modules format is not meant for everyone. It will overwhelm you. This is class is probably doable if you're satisfied with a C. He is bad at giving feed bag i.e. will tell you something is incomplete instead of actually giving feedback.
The lecture consists of him just talking & talking about the topic of that week. grades consists of 3 "modules", each one consists of many questions, answers have to be specific & he makes you watch like 2/3 documentaries (50min-2h)per module then answer questions on it no late work! he checks plagiarism&wants everything in ur own words,no easy A/B
I went into this course thinking it was going to be easy, well I was wrong! Do not take him if you do not like reading or typing long questions/essays. It is time consuming. He only gives you 3 modules, which I did not like. He is a tough grader! I wrote quite a lot of info on my work and he was still picky. I suggest to take another professor.
3 modules, each one consists of a quiz, documentary assignment, reading assignment, and critical thinking chapter questions. The final is an essay, no midterm. Do not procrastinate. He never responded to my emails. You really have to work for it, it's doable, but it may be more work than anticipated. He's a strict grader. Not an easy A.
Professor Allen's lectures are somewhat interesting, he tends to go off topic at least once during every lecture. His work is very time consuming and boring. Professor is a tough grader and don't see how you can get an 'A' unless your a history major
Follows syllabus
Took online HIST 1301. Laid out all homework at beginning of class. Gives a good amount of work. You cant procrastinate or else you probably wont be able to finish in time. Will require a lot of hours. Takes a lot of work, but he grades easy for the most part. Do the work and you can get an A.
The work isnt a lot, its just time consuming. DONT LEAVE ANYTHING TO THE LAST MINITE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERWHELMED!! The last week of class he ended up telling us the first quiz that we had (20 points) was going to be converted to extra credit which helped my grade a lot. He takes long to grade but hes a fair grader.
He really does not make sense. He does not have a system of grading. You just have to think like him. One of the worst professors ever. Never take his classes!
If your very knowledgeable about history or watched a lot of discovery, History and YouTube videos to have an above average grasp on history, you'll be in for a smooth ride. A lot of people complain he dumps work on you, but he gives you more than enough time to complete it. 3 modules and you have literally a whole month for each. Great lectures.
He gives good amount of time to complete assignments. If you turn in all assignment you will do good.
This is the first course that I find heavy, this course has its pros and cons. The pros are that it gives good time to complete the assignments, The cons are he will never reply to your emails, plus he makes you watch 2-hour videos and then write about them, along with 15 to sometimes 40-page readings. He doesn't have a grading system.
Do not take this, professor. Never replies to anyone's emails on BB or STC email. There are only 3 modules to complete. DOES NOT grade on time. From August to December, the class only received ONE graded assignment. We have no clue where we stand. There is a final, and we have no clue what to study or cover. HORRIBLE
Mr. Benjamin Allen is a great History professor, and he does have ton of homework! but the great thing is there are no Final test. He does amazing on his lectures, he is really passionate for history. You will enjoy his class. you will need textbook but its free online.
Professor Allen is a good professor and a good grader. However, if you try to message him, good luck. He never responds to his messages and only tells you what you got on your assignments and what to do to improve. His homework is time-consuming so DO NOT procrastinate. Lots of reading and watching documentaries. He does give a month to complete.
He does not answer emails, blackboard messages, or pronto messages. He also waits until the last minute to grade everything. If you are the type of person who likes to keep up with your grade and know what your grade is, do NOT take his class. I was stressed all semester trying to figure out what my final grade would be.
I'm writing this with 2 days left in the semester and I have no idea what my actual grade is. Dr. Allen will only respond to emails, despite him saying otherwise, and grades assignments at an incredibly slow rate. Dr. Allen responds passive-aggressively to any form of communication and has changed curriculum in ways that feel like sabotage.
I'm currently taking Hist 1301 with professor Allen and let me just say as a Harvard student wanting to fasten my pace in my core curriculum I thought attending STC in the summer would relatively be easy, but was I wrong. Professor Allen is closely involved in the course materials, and may expect you to engage with the subject matter at a high lvl.
Lazy teacher takes forever to grade assignments. 3 modules with a month of time to finish work however it's a lot of reading from a provided textbook and lots of writing. have to watch a bunch of documentaries. if you like having deadlines in order to not procrastinate, do not pick this professor.
Get ready to be spending the whole week watching several YouTube documentaries. Grades late. All assignments have to be typed out and submitted and he goes to what safeassign report says. According to him students have cheated in the past so safeassign determine that. How can he go based on that if everyone is answering the same questions?
Very stressful class!
The people in these reviews saying it's horrible are honestly overreacting. His assignments are very clear and he is a fairly lenient grader, he also doesn't do tests so that was def a plus for me as there's instead 3 modules and 4-5 assignments per module. It's hard to reach him out of class, but other than that, I recommend taking him.
Dr. Allen is knowledgeable but grades inconsistently and leaves many assignments “Not Reviewed.” Communication is slow, and zeros were issued despite completed work. Two missing grades caused an “F.” Proceed with caution—stay proactive, document everything, and follow up often.
