He is absolutely amazing! Each class is a deep and interesting discussion on a wide range of topics in economics, politics, or social sciences. When grading papers, he gives useful feedback - it really feels like he is involved in teaching and cares about his students. Totally recommend!
He is super hard and gives a ton of homework. He was incredibly helpful and when the quarter ended I really felt like I did my best and succeeded. He is also pretty funny. He doesn't put up with bs so arrive on time and do your work and pay attention in class and you should be fine
Yes, his material is interesting, but we come to a 2-year college mainly for the GRADES to transfer. But you can forget about your grades. Only Novelists and Edgar Allen Poe can get A's in this guys class. Be ready to get Bs and Cs on your essays. Oh, there's a quiz almost every class (23times). FORGET EXTRA CREDIT.
His class was extremely interesting and he makes a point to ensure that you have more material than you will actually need for writing essays. He's a tough grader and makes you work hard, but in my opinion, that's kind of the point with college courses. I'm not just here for a degree, I'm here to learn and retain what I've learned.
Armerding is a great teacher. His level of knowledge as well his choices for reading make the class very interesting. The reading is definitely tough in many cases and he makes you think very hard about topics in the class. The more you talk and give your insight the less he will pick on you. Make sure to do the reading, or you will fail.
He is a amazing teacher, For English he is the best, I highly recommend this class for future students.
I only wish I could emphasize just how much of a tough grader he is. It makes no sense. His expectations are unrealistic! Sure his class is pretty fun, but I cannot keep up with his grading criteria. Help!
Funny teacher, will make you work.
I took 1B with him and there were a bunch of international students who hated him because they could hardly speak English so I think that's what all the bad reviews are for. But really, he's funny and the material is super interesting. He meets with each student before each essay is due to make sure you can get a higher grade. I'd recommend him.
Pretty good teacher; not the best, but not bad. The materials are interesting and you get to synthesize a lot of sources to create your arguments. Make sure to do your assigned reading, not only is most of class spent discussing it, but it will help a lot when writing your papers, as he expects you to have multiple sources in dialogue.
He's hilarious and his lectures are brilliant. Seriously, just listening to him talk expanded my vocabulary. I think I learned more about writing essays and reading literature in 2 weeks in Mr. A'S class than I did in all other English classes combined. Be ready to work, though. He expects you to apply yourself.
His 110 is a lot easier than his 1A, but I guess its supposed to be. In 110 he gives you a ridiculous amount of help and by the end I definitely knew how to write strong college essays. Also, the readings and discussions are crazy interesting. I totally recommend him for 110. His 1A is pretty hard though.
I have always loved English but Mr. Armerding took English 1A to a whole new level. He is so inspirational and really cares about his students. He's really funny and the class is NEVER boring! If you're a person who normally doesn't like English, take Mr. Armerding. He is very clear on all assignments and wants you to succeed!
Class with him was great, he's clear and the lectures are fun. Lots of group and class discussions. There's three class essays and plenty of time to do them. There are "pop quizzes" that you have to be at class on time for, if you're five minutes late you miss out, so try to be on time. If you put in a bit of effort you'll get an A pretty easily.
Ben actually made me enjoy English and taught me a lot about writing. He definitely improved my critical thinking/writing skills. The papers we write have to be around 1000+ words, which isnt too bad. He meets with us before the paper is due to give really good feedback/advice. 11/10 would recommend this teacher. I wished he taught Eng 1b/c
He is a brilliant teacher who covers a number of interesting social and political topics through the lens of writing persuasively. You'll learn about all kinds of interesting things from him beyond just writing. He does make you work for your grade, but he is not especially tough and his amazing lectures make up for the moderate homework any day.
Not sure why someone would hate his 110 unless you totally blew it off. Very easy class, super clear instructions. You know exactly what he wants and he meets with you before every essay is due. I learned a lot about writing and signed up to take his 1A. Great teacher! Definitely recommend. And he's funny!
Best teacher! Took 1A with him and now 1B. He makes a lot of jokes in class and you learn a ton about all kinds of interesting topics. He does a lot of critical thinking and experimental essays, which are weird but its a good change from other English classes.
Honestly, everything I have ever wanted in an English professor. He is clear with his instructions, meets with you before papers are do(take advantage!), and he is absolutely hilarious. Definitely one of my top choices of awesome professors in my book. He gives mutual respect to all students and gives a lot of free points. :)
He is a very Excellent English Professor. He puts his heart and time on his job as an English Professor. He gives you very detail feedbacks on your papers. His topic in the class is very interesting and you will enjoy English class. I highly recommended his English 1A class.
Amazing course, a lot of interesting perspectives and theories. I learned a LOT during this course, and definitely would be looking into his future courses. The teacher is so generous when sharing his thoughts, I needed such teachers in my past, especially English teachers. Thank you Mr Armerding, you've made a huge difference!
Ben is awesome! Super realistic and tries to make life less stressful by having us write parts of our essays in class/HW as we go. Super funny and chill! He does want people to participate and will write your name on the board if you haven't spoken in a while. SERIOUSLY RECCOMEND BEN! Best prof ever!
He a very funny guy. The class is very interesting but he is too hard. I like his books a lot but you should not take him if your grammar is not good and he makes you talk. Not easy for international student.
Mr. Armerding was super great! gave easy pop quizzes and was fun and engaging.
Best professor ever. He is great. Take his class. You will be glad to be in his class.
An excellent and very dedicated instructor. I took his Eng. 1A and regretted not having taken Eng. 1B with him.
I took an accelerated summer class with this professor so assignments pile up quickly and you will be reading and writing a fair amount but it's an English class so it's not out of the ordinary. Fair grader and gives good feedback, I would 100% recommending taking him as he will teach you writing techniques that will be used for future classes.
If you want to become a better, stronger writer - take this class. The tools he provides will help you in the long run and make writing easier. Ben gives really good feedback. There are a lot of assignments, almost daily. However, they are usually used for your essay. Example: Submit intro paragraph, peer review, etc. Worth it!
Wants his students to succeed, and works with them to do their best! Teaches you many different styles of essays and they all will serve you later on in school and life. There are lots of weekly assignments, but the essays are weighted so much higher that skipping a few is ok. He is not super strict on deadlines as long as you communicate with him.
He gives letter grades on essays, meaning that an A goes down as a 100% in the grade book, making it really easy to boost your grade. Small homework assignments (15 minutes) assigned almost every class but he graded them extremely easy - 100% just for submitting anything in to canvas. Definitely would take him again if I could.
Ben is a great person, when you can get him one on one + put pressure on him to give you advice. But do you really want to force a teacher to open up + give you honest feedback for your work? I had Ben for Eng 110 + he was great, way better than Mr. White! However, when I took him for ENG1A he was slammed, he had too many classes, he couldn't focus
Super cool teacher. The class is hard but he meets with you before every essay to tell you what to do and he's in the TLC a lot if you want even more help. He gives a TON of feedback on your writing, too. Some of the readings we're a little boring like the comic book, but most of it was pretty interesting.
His class is actually really enjoyable. It was my first 7:35 am class and I thought I would dread going to this class but I actually love going to class every day. His lectures are engaging and his homework/class work is really just building your essays so you always know exactly what youre doing! Def take his class!
I really enjoyed this class! Not only is Ben a really nice person he is cute so it makes class more fun. He spends lots of time in class on essays so it makes easier to write when you get home. He does have a lot of homework on canvas and it is graded! Need to show up to get points or it really messes up your grade. However his papers are easy.
He is definitely a tough grader and he puts no effort on teaching! He took us to the computer lab and did not teach anything. I went to his office hour for help and he did not give much feedback on my essay. All he told me was, "your essay is good." But then it turned out a B- on that essay. ALL of my classmates regretted to take his class!!!
Ben's pretty cool. Super interesting topics and you definitely learn how to think critically. No fill-in-the-blank five paragraph essays in this class. Be ready to work for your grade, though.
As an international student, Ben's class is too heavy and incredibly impossible to get a good credit, even though I put almost all energy in the class. I have been to his office hours several times, but his feedback is weak and shallow when you really want to get a deep and careful answer.
No extra credit, hard to improve the presentation score, good lecture, but bad explanation of his own thinkings, won't take it again.
Loved his English 1B! The books we read and the class discussions were amazing. I never would have read Fight Club or Camus but those books are life changing. I also appreciated that almost every essay was an experiment that was so different from what you usually write in an English class. Take his 1B if you can.
Professor Armerding, is a great teacher. He answers emails quickly, is understanding and an interesting professor. Took him for two semesters because he was great!
ENG34C Film into Lit online class was great. 3rd class with this professor bc he's the best. I WANT to come to class. He has clear outline of his classes, does a great job over explaining (in a good way), & gives tons of feedback, and assigns lots of online discussions which are really helpful for essays. All the homework turns into your essays
Ben is a tough grader. There's homework every day after class and you definitely need to talk a lot in class because there's participation grade. If you do not talk in class you will not get an A for sure. He tries to give a bit feedback if you find him after class but even if I followed all of his instructions he does not give me a good grade.
He is very hard if you are an international student but I am glad I took his class. I know real college standard now. If you can pass his class you can do other class too. I took 1A with and then the online film class which is very fun and I learned a lot about Western literature and films.
Although this has been one of the toughest classes I have taken at Foothill, I have learned so much! Prof. Armerding's writing experiments will provide you the opportunity to enhance your critical thinking skills and challenge yourself as a writer. Be prepared to work hard and for the love of all that is good and decent, DO NOT procrastinate .
Mr. Armerding very much wants his students to succeed. Feedback was helpful and I feel like I learned a lot of things I can apply to writing for future classes of all kinds. Grading is clear: we were allowed to print the rubric and additional materials for our final exam and have it with us during the test. He was communicative with regular emails.
I really enjoyed taking his class. Being an international student, it was very stressful to keep up with his standards. There were a lot of materials to read and his grading method was not the best, but seemed to be fair. I learned a lot from his class, and I'd love to take him again.
If you show that you put effort in your assignments, he acknowledges it. He's a really nice guy. Just be aware that he makes everybody speaks in class. If you stick to his online discussion assignment schedule, it shouldn't be hard for you to finish your work on time. He is really nice and keeps telling us not to worry for our grades.
Taking his 1B right now and it's awesome. Definitely one of my all time favorite classes. The books and stories are pretty cool and he's really accessible outside of class to get help on your writing.
He is not helpful and not accessible. Assignments and books appear interesting, but his instructions are very unclear. There is also no rubric available. I would avoid.
This is specifically for his online class: YouTubes are basically reiteration of the essay prompts. There is no instruction as to the writing techniques. Just random big ideas thrown out and you are expected to know what to do. Poor quality online class, I would not choose this teacher again.
His English class was relatable and focused on the real world . I loved that he made me think and check myself. I learned so much and Im happy I took his class.
He gives really good feedback but is a bit unclear in expectations at times. Expect a decent amount of writing (daily) and peer response.
Legit the whole class was just discussions. No lecture. If you don't care about boring and want an easy A, tak Would have dropped it but I needed this class for my associates. There's about 3 assignments max due a week. 2 essays both 1500 words minimum. I wish this class was more than just discussions.
I liked that the class has a lot of discussion and we got to share a lot of our own ideas. Most of the literature classes I take are just reading quizzes and lecture videos. So that was a nice change. He gave some good feedback on my midterm but I would have liked if he gave me more feedback throughout the class.
He is more often than not unclear and never once responded to a single email that I sent. Expects a lot from you but yet doesn't make things abundantly clear as he has these video that are just purely a restatement of what has already been said in the assigment.
Attendance is graded. He leaves a lot of homework but that homework is small steps to complete a bigger assignment. He is not a hard grader, homework is graded on completion, not effort. I got A's on all my essays and I feel like I did an average job and i even turned some of them in late and he doesn't dock points off. Good teacher learned a lot!
Very clear expectations.
Being someone who hates being in class for English in high school I opted for the online class. His expectations are clear, and he grades fair. He is also understanding if you just communicate with him. If you put in effort in improving your writing and pay attention to his requirements, it is an easy A.
Good professor. Easy to contact outside of class. Has discussions due every day but lets you turn it late work for full credit. Really caring professor.
Pretty enjoyable & interesting class. Replied to emails fairly quickly. There were 6 essays in total, spaced out well to give you time to write them. There's a bunch of small assignments to do, easy to complete. Do the discussions and hw on time, get 100%. I would recommend, not too much reading. Not much feedback but some on a couple of essays.
GREAT PROFESSOR! Really interesting content for this specific class too! Professor Amerding assigns a couple of discussions a week which are helpful in writing the papers for the class. Armerding is very accessible outside his class and wants his students to do well in his class. Overall, a really great professor who I'd definitely take again!
Really nice professor! gives good feedback on the essays you turn in. Which is helpful for the future essay you have to write.
He's a great English teacher, great feedback and is actually an easy grader. He doesn't care about grammar or how you write it except only if you answered what the assignment he's asking you for. Al though he gives a lot of work, just tons of classwork and hw. A lot of writing prompt however its very easy! Just a lot, you have to keep up.
Easy class, just a lot of work. Discussions due every day. Assignments can get confusing but just do the work and you'll receive full credit. He'll even take your late work.
Great teacher, it might just be that I like his teaching style but the books assigned in class are genuinely interesting to read. Just read the prompts and write good opening sentences and you'll be good! One of my favorite teachers ever. Also, shoutout to his academic mindfulness, keeping us less stressed and focused and growing as people.
There was way too much work in his class. Daily reading and response assignments, 6 essays due throughout the quarter. He's an easy grader but you have to put in a ton of work to get to the level of writing he wants to see in his class. He's nice but would not recommend just because of the amount of busywork.
Took ENGL 34C (Literature into Flim) with professor Armerding. A couple of discussions each week that are about the movie or book you are reading/watching. Two essays for the entire quarter. Discussions really help with figuring out your topic for your essay. Overall, really fun and interesting class. Armerding is a really caring professor.
The material was interesting and I learned a lot from this course. It's an English course, so lots of reading and writing, but the assignments were simple, to the point, and through the course, you get better at them. Accepted late work and did offer good feedback if you turned it in on time. Throughout the course, you work on the midterm: helpful.
Professor Armerding is a good teacher, encourages mental wellness and small group discussions, is fair, responsive, and gives great, constructive feedback. The class is about writing, critical reading, and thinking, so get ready to read and think! That said, the material was engaging, and not difficult to read. I would take this class again.
Pretty nice professor and gives detailed feedback on papers. There are a lot of assignments, but most are completion graded (except for the essays), so just write whatever and spend most of your time on the essays.
Professor Armerding is a very empathetic and passionate teacher who does everything that he can to ensure the success of his students. classes were enjoyable. some things to highlight: lots of hw, essays are hard, esp research paper at the end of course. overall, I recommend him as a prof.
Always willing to help students. Even if you submit assignments late, he will still give you full credit. Give you extra credit opportunities which count up to 2% of your grade.
Professor Armerding really cares and wants his students to learn. He is understanding of life outside of class. He makes his own content and his assignments are organized well all leading into eachother. He does have 6 papers due throughout the quarter but as long as you put in effort you'll get a good grade. Highly recomend.
I flat out hate English but he was able to make it fun. I learned so much about how to write certain essays. I took summer course and we had 1 essay each week for a total of 6. The discussions helps you and is basically used for a draft to the essay youll write min 750 to 1500 words usually. Which made it less stressful. I would for sure take again
I took this class years ago and I'm a graduate student now. I still refer back to the concepts that I was taught in his class and it made such an impact in how I structure my writing today. I strongly recommend his course. He makes it interesting, is reasonable, approachable, and I ended up enjoying the course way more than I thought I would!
Professor doesn't care about student stress levels. Uses Turnitin as a primary grading indicator, illogically believes that grading should be listed by using unproven methods through the mistakes of artificial intelligence when grading papers. His class talks about sensitive topics about racial differences and does so without moral regard.
Seriously, don't even think about using ChatGPT in his class. He screens for it and I got a zero on an essay. He was chill about it and I still did okay in the end. Make sure you use his office hours. He's pretty chill. A lot of homework though.
6 essays throughout the quarter that aren't too difficult to complete if you follow along with discussion posts. Discussion posts can feel like a lot but they're mostly graded for participation and not so much the content so be sure to focus most time on essays. He calls on people so be ready to share. 2 in-class timed essays (mid-term and final).
Gives WAY TOO MUCH homework in a week and way too many discussion posts. Essays are due every two weeks. Does not care about students' well-being AT ALL. has extreme policies for AI -- do not use chatGPT or Grammarly.
The professor responds promptly to emails and is flexible with scheduling. However, the workload is excessive. I wanted to invest genuine thought into my writing, but that's nearly impossible. Even though he provides detailed instructions for each assignment, they often lack clarity. I needed another professor to explain his instructions.
I was expecting the class to be informative + enjoyable, but the class was a nightmare. Average of 4-5 long discussion posts due T-Th every week and 6 long essays. May accuse you of using AI even if he's shown proof of original work. Then, will belittle you and stop responding to your emails. Do not take this class if you struggle with English!
There is so much homework in this class, and much of it is busy work. He uses Turnitin to grade every essay, causing many students to be wrongly accused of using ChatGPT/AI. The rubrics for essays can also be misleading because they don't cover everything he wants to see in an essay. If he cared about his students, he wouldn't be as harsh.
I emailed the prof. about attending his office hours as syllabus says hybrid, showed up in person, and was told he was not there, I emailed him again to inform him why our talk was delayed. He proceeded to tell me that it was "unfortunate" that I asked about his "office" and not "tutoring" hours. English prof. who does not know how to communicate?!
His class made me like English again. There's a lot of homework but it all builds to the essays so it makes things easier. I don't know about all students but he was prompt responding to emails and gave me A TON of feedback on my essays. He's strict about AI so don't take him if that's your thing. Topics are really interesting.
He will do anything to accuse you of using AI and uses unreliable sources to back him up and has multiple discussion posts due every week. His essay instructions are not clear which made it harder to follow along.
Took him for English 1A and he was super flexible with due dates and helped out a lot even if assignments were late. He picks pretty interesting material for the class and cares about your mental health, which is refreshing. It's a lot of work but you'll learn how to write in Armerdings class.
Assigned lots of homework but they were not extremely time consuming. Was not harsh with grading and was understanding when it came to late work. Gives time to get stuff done in class as well which was great, and tries hard to be energetic.
THIS MAN DESERVES A RAISE!! I got a B+ for English 1a and I realistically should've gotten a C. He WANTS you to pass and if you have a lot of missing assignments, he will send u a message. The workload is crazy so its easy to fall behind. But there's always an opportunity to make it up. Essays r easy just hit the word count.
This class was really great. Prof. Armerding genuinely wants you to succeed. Strict about AI but more so because he wants you to actually learn and use your brain for essays and assignments. Very understanding, flexible, not a harsh grader whatsoever and gives tons of amazing and helpful feedback for your assignments so you know how to improve.
Starts EVERY class with a talk against Ai. Convinced he has an Ai f*tish. Weekly discussion posts, just stay on top of those and you'll be fine. Essays are graded pretty easily, just do what he says and use his sentence starters. Extra Credit assignment is a lot of work.
He's a super nice teacher and didn't take points off assignments even though I would turn them in late. He explains everything very well and gives good feedback. There were about 6 essays but for most of them we had assignments to help write them. Overall he's a great professor and the class isn't too hard if you actually stay on top of your work.
This is the second summer class I've taken with Armerding, and this class was just as easy as ENGL1A. The assignments are very clear and the two essays are not graded very harshly. You can even get by without getting any of the books/doing the reading, as long as you put something in discussions. Take for easy GE credit.
