ask, ask and ask again when you don't understand something, don't skip class and make sure to meet his requirements for the essays
A GROOVY DUDE
Lectures are really interesting. Make sure you talk to him about an Essay b4 u turn it in, it really helps. Not too many essays, just like 3-4 during the semester. They're fun, though.
He is a good teacher overall. He talks a lot but he wants students understand his ideas. tests are very easy. He tough grader with papers. I recommend take classes with him.
This guy expect you to have gold on your essay or something significant. He explain stuff but it makes no sense. Tough grader and does not care too much if you pass or fail. He give a lot of quiz and NONE ARE MULTIPLE CHOICE. He does NOT GIVE ANY EXTRA CREDIT. If you are a person who like to get an A. Do not take his class. YOU WILL REGRET IT.
Had for both 1101 and 1102, easiest English classes ever. Not sure why some are complaining about his essay grading criteria, I mean he is a ENGLISH professor. Had only 2 essays to do for BOTH 1101 and 1102. Cool and VERY laid back guy would most def recommend to anyone i know.
I would not normally do these but this professor is amazing. He is so funny and really cares about his students. I would 100 percent recommend him. He is a little tough grading papers but gives good feedback on how to improve them. He makes class fun and enjoyable. His lectures are always entertaining and intriguing.
I took this class as a hybrid and the teacher just kept complaining all the time about how he didn't like computers. Why teach hybrid if you don't like computers? He doesn't even like you to email him. Apart from that he is kind of funny and not a very hard grader. Expect work online every week and they are long.
Amazing teacher. He looks at all the stories and poems that you'll read and lecture them in deep vivid meanings. Casual dude (you'll think he's a hipster) and he will make the class laugh. Helps students a lot especially with writing research papers. He's in love with Zizek. And most used phrase he uses is "Does that makes sense"?
The only tests given are a midterm and some quizzes here and there. When lectures are given, he has no main idea or topic of the lectures he goes back and forth between English related topics and then life stories. Sometimes the life stories will relate to the topic to help clarify but mostly random. The analysis paper will be the hardest part.
Do not take him, you will regret it. His lectures doesn't make any sense, he only talks about how he hates technology and stupid topics during the entire class and then expect you to have a golden essay.
Reallllly Funny , he is very dedicated in what he teaches . Yes , he talks a lot and gives lectures. But I do not mind it's entertaining.
Amazing how someone so young could be so separated from the generation he is teaching. I think he sometimes forgets that his students HAVE to take his class and most of us have passion in other aspects of education. His research essay he wants is absolutely ridiculous and then expects you to nail it like you are an expert in the subject.
Mr. Barrett is honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had. He's really funny, and he's good at using outside information to relate back to the topic he's explaining to make the concept easier to understand. It's really obvious that he cares about his students; he'll ask you about a hundred times over the semester "does that make sense?". :)
Barrett is an overall great professor, he's always willing to help and on top of that he's a hilarious guy. He is in fact a tough grader and is insistent on certain things when writing papers (usage of third person, no cliches, etc.) But then again this is college level classes so it's understandable. He's a great guy would definitely recommend!
Barrett is one of the few professors that will test you as a student. This is not a professor that for everyone. He is a professor that does it the old-fashion way and will grade you on your performance and knowledge you have obtain in his lectures. Professor Barrett's character is a man who thinks outside of the box and has a sense of humor.(0_0)
Super good teacher easy to understand, doesn't really give that much work ! I would totally recommend to everyone .
Great professor! Not an easy A, but a very fair grader. Lectures are intellectually stimulating. 10/10 would take again
Expect a quiz every class on the assigned reading. Tough grader but gives great details on exactly what he wants you to write and how to do it. Overall excellent teacher, really down to earth.
Lectures are more like an open conversation then a ordinary lecture. Read the assigned reading because there will be a quiz every class unless he decides otherwise. If you need help just ask he'll answer in class or during office hours if you need more one on one. He doesn't like computers but if your in class you'll have no need to email him.
He is a great teacher but the research paper is difficult. If you hate quizzes, dont take him. You will have a quiz everyday.
Great professor. Always willing to help. Show up with notes from the readings, and then you'll pass the quizzes. It's not a hard class by any means, you just have to stay on top of quizzes, and other small assignments.
I took ENC1101, ENC1102 with Mr. Barrett, then I took ENL2012 with him. I find him very good professor for whom looking for additional information, especially regard to the English literature. I enjoyed his classes, he is a friend more than professor. Of course I recommend him, with a reference to; he is a little bit tough in essays grading
Makes you think out of the box.
I've had him for three classes, enc 1101, 1102 and enl 2012, and yes his lectures are sometimes off topic in the way it sounds but it ties into the main topic if you think about it, he makes you think outside your comfort zone and really makes you expand the way you think about a subject and open up the mind a lot more. Reading is nesscary.
I like him as a person and teacher. However, I am not doing well in the class due to the fact your grade is made up of a mere 4 items. 2 essays, mid-term, and participation. If you do your homework, you'll pass the pop quizzes no problem! It's the harsh grading of the papers that hurts your grade. Make sure to write papers early and get feedback.
Barrett is a very easy going guy. He's funny, easy to approach, and knows his stuff. He grades TOUGH on papers, and gives quizzes almost every class (Which are easy to pass if you do the reading). Each assignment category is worth 25% of your grade so make sure to do everything and do them to the best of your ability.
This is one of the most amazing teachers I've ever had. Barrett connects on a more personal level to make the class feel more friendly than teachy. He is so funny and very willing to help. Do the readings and follow guidelines for papers and you will have no trouble at all. Overall, ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING !!!!
Great professor, good guy and will help you without giving you an attitude or making you feel stupid.
if you are looking for an A this isn't the class for you but if you're trying to improve critical thinking skills and writing skills choose barrett
Barrett is such a good professor. Not an easy A, he makes you work for it. He's super helpful and gives really good feedback. READ THE ASSIGNED HOMEWORK!! Your grade will hurt if you don't read or come to class. He's super funny and sometimes off -topic but overall an awesome professor and a great dude.
Barrett is awesome, if you don't pay attention or do good in the class it's 100% you, he doesn't make it impossible to pass. People on here are complaining about writing but it's English. Attend class, read the chapters, and you'll be fine. I'm excited to take him for ENC1102 in the fall!
i had Prof Barrett for my 1101 & 1102 . He is a great Professor who will help you through the class as long as you apply yourself and actually read the excerpts he assigns.
Extremely helpful and works with the student. If you have a problem, don't be afraid to talk to Mr. Barret. He is funny and integrates his humor into his work. He keeps the class interested with this. There are mini-quizes at the start of every class, but these are easy to pass as they are just a review of the reading homework you were assigned.
One of the best professors Ive ever had. He focused on teaching material but also made class fun and talked about other things that werent strictly as boring as talking about grammar or English. I would take my papers to him before the due date so he could revise them and give me feedback and he ALWAYS helped me improve my essays a ton.
You can talk to him on a human level
His teaching methods are alright but he seems like an extremely condescending person. The class was tough but what was tougher was seeing these poor attempts at jokes or references and complete silence right after.
Professor Barrett is awesome. He makes the assigned readings really fun and understandable. Always looked forward to his class.
He's easily the best teacher I've ever had. His assignments and lectures are not easy, but they really push me to work hard and think about writing, reading, and even the world, differently. He's very accessible during his office hours and he wants his students to do well. He's way beyond what you'd expect from a community college.
He expects to much for this level. He grades to tough. This is not a PhD level cours and he makes it seem like it is. Your b est is never good enough for him.
Barrett is by far THE BEST teacher I've taken in this campus, His way of teaching is interacting and very casual, sometimes it seems like we were group of friends tossing ideas around, everything he said makes you double think. Not too many assignments but three big important essays and a lot of mini pop quizzes, overall he isnt trying to fail you.
He is a really great person but hes super nit picky and wants things his way or you wont pass.
Cool guy, but he is team Lord Voldemort which is kinda weird
Be ready to think outside, inside, and without the box jk or am I. He gives daily quizzes, but they are an easy pass if you do the readings. Just, don't be lazy. His lectures are entertaining, and he has a particular sense of humor, so be open-minded also. Overall, he's a funny dude who knows his stuff and tries to get the best of his students.
Best teacher I have ever had. If you like perspective, different philosophies, and great lectures take his class.
Was a great guy and funny. The grade is decided upon 4 assignments. 2 papers where he is a hard grader but gives great feedback before the due date. 1 midterm where you will know all the answers if you went to class. Then the p/f quizzes you will have every day based on a short reading. Easy to pass if you show up and pay attention.
One of the best at HCC. Lectures made you think of everything a different way and will make you LOL. He turns a boring class into a fun time every day! Gives quizzes at the beginning based on excerpts you have to read in the textbook. 2 challenging essays but helps you a LOT with writing them. Don't leave early. Has a thing against Nissan Armadas.
One of the best, if not the best professor with whom I've taken classes at HCC. If you do the readings, attend classes, and know how the Greeks sailed, you won't have any problems. He's quite available in his office hours to help with the papers, and his grading is straightforward. Although he looks young, he has a PhD so don't take him for granted
He will help you if you put the work in
The best teacher I have had. He is extremely sarcastic but, insanely funny. He is willing to work with students and move deadlines if needed. The class has two essays, a midterm, and easy daily quizzes. It's an easy class to pass if you try.
Do not skip class because you have a little test 10 questions at the beginning of every class. He is very understanding even for my class which was full of zombies. He is very passionate about his job and you dont have to be passionate but please be politically correct. His conversations are relevant and if you dont understand it helps to ask...
He was the best prof Ive ever taken, wish more professors are like him! I loved listening to his lectures, hes soo funny and very smart. Start your essays early and read the textbook (I downloaded a free pdf) and youll be good. Miss him lottss!
This man, this absolute unit, is hilarious and makes everyone laugh. he doesn't ask for much from his students, just read the prompt, the short stories, and you'll easily pass the quizzes he gives.
Dr./Professor Benjamin Barrett is a GREAT professor he really makes a fun and interesting lecture. He gives out a quiz every class at the beginning but it is super easy if you just read the readings he gives you before class. He's an awesome professor, super chill and understanding and his class is actually fun!
He is a great professor. The class is enjoyable even though he says a lot of dad jokes. You need to show up because he gives a quiz everyday but the quizzes are simple if you do your homework and really help your grade at the end. The paper's are easy and he makes sure you are very prepared for them. Also, he is also very good looking.
An absolute gem! My favorite professor I've ever taken. He is the complete opposite of boring. He's very knowledgeable and available during office hours if you need to clarify anything. He's also understanding and very clear about grades. He's respectful and hilarious too; not rude and grumpy like other professors. Read the text & take notes.
Professor Barrett is a friendly teacher and all, but when it comes to lectures, he does not have a general topic to discuss; they seem very unplanned. He often goes off the subject and talks about things that are entirely irrelevant to the class. For example, he went from talking about a Shakespeare poem to dominatrixes and other sexual topics.
he's really smart, you can tell he loves his job, he's very open minded, he's mostly always available to talk after school, and he's all around a good guy and his classes are really fun to be apart of. he's really good at conveying his messages so that we all understand and I had a lot of fun learning in this class, really recommend
I took Professor Barrett for ENC-1102. The top-rated comment accurately explains how the class went for me as well. This professor challenges the typical pre-conceived notions people have about aspects in life. This English class is more about reading and talking about the readings. There are only 2 papers, but the papers are graded "harder".
lots and lots and lots of reading! had to install a read out loud feature on my phone cause even with that I'm always a week behind but they are very forgiving and helpful. will almost over explain things if u ask for help but its helpful.
This wasn't a "class," it was a writing exercise. There was no teaching, no instruction, no book or reference materials. Just read some obscure/senseless literature review and repeat the same assignment over and over. Zero useful skills or knowledge taught. If I ever need to write a review about a nonsense review then at least I'll be practiced.
Please dont take this class if you have attention deficit!!! The reading NEVER ends. Otherwise he gives good feedback and is pretty nice, other than a bit condescending at times, although i dont think he means it. He grades fairly and always gave 100% on practice assignments.
Tons of quizzes based on the online textbook thats free. 90% of the quizzes were easy As while the others were C, D, and Fs. Grammatical errors and the answers are sometimes very opinionated based off the the rules of English. The professor is very nice and you can message him any time for help. Assignments are easy As. Focus on 2 big essays.
I had him for a 6-week course along with three other classes so it was a lot of cramming. Towards the end, I was writing two 350 word papers a day. It was a struggle but those were just writing practice assignments that he gave feedback on but always gave out a 100 so honeslty, veru easy A. There are only 2 big essays that are make or break.
Barrett generally is a very good professor. His online class is pretty much made up of all little quiz grades that are 25%, two different essays that are about 50% of your grade, and just some writing prompts that. are the last 25%, although your pretty much guaranteed a 90-100% for the essay prompts.
Honestly, great guy. But one of the hardest graders at HCC. Ive never had a professor with such strict standards when it comes to papers. Beware. Only 2 papers , but a quiz every session. If you are a terrible writer, DO NOT PICK this professor.
He's a funny guy, if your having a bad morning walking into his class will put a smile on your face
He doesn't even explain well, his readings make no sense and got no point, every single class meeting is a quiz. 2 papers that he grades very harshly.
I took his class online and it was fairly easy except for the 2 final papers which he graded harshly. Although it was a big percent of the grade and he graded hard, he gave really thorough feedback for the final papers. The rest of the grade was made up from easy quizzes with material straight form the text book and short essays.
Poor at organizing classes. Some of the readings needed for the quizzes were just missing and the due dates for assignments did not line up with how the class was organized/scheduled. Also many of the essays were required to be entirely opinion based but expected to be written without any bias or any indication of bias or first/second POV.
He is a really good professor, his classes are entertaining as you will learn a lot and develop your critical thinking. The essays are a little hard to write as he has really high standards on the writing, but besides that the class flows really easy. you just need to read and be ready for quizzes
He is really a good professor. I actually enjoyed his class. Only wrote two essays and a lot of quizzes.
Amazing professor and person overall. Thoroughly enjoyed his English class even though English is my worst subject.
He was a funny guy, would take this class again biased just off of that.
love him! funny and he does lecture for a while but he makes it interesting took him twice for enc 1101 and am currently in 1102 and will most likely pass with a C or B he has quizzes every day but every once in a while he'll give us a lil break, I'm not very good at school in general but he makes it easy for me only 2 essays for the whole semester
great teacher
didn't have to try too hard in his class, only on the exams hes a tough grader. nearly every day of class there was a quiz. he gives plenty of extra credit. he goes on tangents it's an easy A gives good feedback on the essays and helps you change things on your draft to ensure you get a good grade on the essays.
There are only two major assignments, which are graded very hard. Lots of reading...he goes off-topic a whole lot. Dr. Barrett is an overall good person but not some much a good teacher.
25% of the grade is quizzes 25% is your first paper 25% is midterm (if you read everything you'll get a 90% easily, it's just multiple choice) and 25% is your final. Honestly he is a great talker, the way he interprets poems is crazy. Beyond my brain capacity. He is a leftie 🙄 but honestly, loved him!
He's a great teacher and very funny. You have to do attendance quizzes which are pretty easy. He's very helpful and responds fairly quickly to emails. Pro tip: Don't wait until the minute to do essays and don't be afraid to ask him for help. Also try not to miss class, since the attendance quizzes are worth 25% of your grade just like the essays.
Professor Barrett is a great instructor, his lectures are interesting, informative. He is very involved with the students and encourages class and personal participation. I took both ENC -1101 and ENC- 1102 instructed by Professor Barrett. Be ready to think and explore different points of view, defend your viewpoints. you will have a better mind.
Definitely my favorite professor so far, very nice, will match the effort you put in 10-fold, and explains concepts in a way that genuinely helped me learn. Attendance is a free homework grade, as long as you don't miss more than 4 days of class, 25% of your grade is automatically an A. Has a great sense of humor as well.
Very bad at communication, and a very harsh grader. Half my work was flagged for ai that I didn't even use. Would not recommend.
He is a very tough grader and pretty much your entire grade rests on the two major papers. His feedback is very critical and he is very hard to reach. I do not recommend for an online class or 11.02.
This is the only professor that has had a profound impact in my education. I truly appreciated his interesting lectures that combined English, sociology, and psychology. Sometimes got off topic but was always able to bring it back to what we were learning. I took his class 6 years ago, but I still think about this guy lol.
I'm not the best writer, But he seems to give great feedback on all your submissions, the Quizzes are practically free points as they are all directly from the reading. The texts he gives out can be lengthy and some are hard to interpret, But overall a great teacher, let me resubmit my essay because I forgot a works cited page.
Class is just papers, he is a fair grader if you actually do the work. Just 1 assignment a week, best English class I have taken.
