He's interesting and fun. If you give everything a serious try, you'll get a good grade. If you try to slide by, he won't cut you a break. He knows what he's doing but sometimes it's hard to take him seriously because he looks so young.

Great teacher and great guy. Really funny (dry humor at times, so be warned), very helpful and the class goes by quickly. Pretty easy grader as well.

Best speech teacher at Moorpark College. Do your speeches on the due date, and do them how he wants them done, and you will pass with flying colors. You get an A on the impromptu just for doing it, so dont be scared.

Benji is a great teacher! He does everything he can to make you feel comfortable when speaking, allows you to be yourself and pick your own topics for the speeches. Just make sure you do EVERY speech and PREPARE AND PRACTICE them and you'll get A's on them. He's easy to talk to and get along with.

Good teacher, the subject sucks but he makes it easier. Ben is truly a great professor! I had such a blast coming to class and it was surprisingly the ONLY class i didnt skip! I would take the class again if i could! Took his spring 8 wk class. Lots of work, do it on time so you won't lose points. You will lose more points doing your speeches late than going up unprepared. Took Bates for Speech M01, not only did I overcome my fear of public speaking, but I also learned some cool techniques that I will know forever. Very fair with his grading, and will let you know from every speech you give what to work on for the next one, so you can only get better if you're serious about your grade. Funny guy too! Take him!

Ben is an amazing teacher. He lets you know what he expects and wants right off the bat. However, yes this is a speech class so be prepared for one pretty much every week. He docks points for everyday that you are late when a speech is due. But offers 30 points extra credit. You only need the "textbook" for the quizzes online.

Professor Bates is the best professor i've ever had. He's kind, helps students out, and makes the class extremely enjoyable. I would recommend everyone to take him. He one time wrote a review on my speech about college athletes saying "ESPN calls him the voice of all student athletes". Funniest professor i've ever had!

He is the most interesting guy I ever seen in Moorpark. His lecture was relaxing and the materials are introduced clearly. There will be only 2 big presentations and a lots of credit-no credit assignments. Should be fun, take him!

He's hilarious and such a great professor. He was always making the class entertaining and he went easy on the grading for the most part. He can tell if you half ass your speech or if you did in the night before so make sure you prepare well in advance. He assigns easy online quizzes that boost up your grade and a documentary analysis. Super easy.

I have a terrible fear of public speaking, but Ben made it more comfortable to speak. I'm not going to say that it was no longer nerve wracking, but it wasn't as bad as it was when i started. I don't even know what to say about Bates. He's kind, funny, and totally amazing. He never skips the opportunity to joke or be amicable with the students in his classes. Ben Bates is hilarious. I loved going to class. The speaking in front of people was horrible but being in that class made me feel a lot more comfortable with public speaking. There are two speeches which require a lot of research and time, but its not so bad looking back.

Rating profs? Not my thing. In fact this is my first rating. But you must understand that Ben Bates is so freaking awesome that I just have to rate his top-notch teaching skills. He helps take the daunting out of public speaking and knows what he's talking about. Plus, there is never a dull moment in this class. And did I mention he's hilarious?

He has a very dry sense of humor, so at first it was hard to tell if he was joking about something or not. He grades pretty easily and is encouraging with speeches, but there is a lot of speech prep to do. There is extra credit. As long as you do your work and present your speeches on time, this class will be pretty easy. No textbook necessary.

Really solid class, grading criteria is clear. Speech grading is based on utilizing concepts from class such as using attention getters, hand gestures, speech organization. If you're nervous about your speaking abilities, there is no need to be afraid. He isnt expecting you to sound like an absolute pro. Utilize class concepts and you'll get an A.

I took the 8 week summer class and it was great. 5 quizzes, one final, and a speech a week. Put in the work and follow the rubrics, you'll get a good grade. There are peer reviews, a couple outlines for speeches, and few assignments. Longest speech is 7-9min but you work up to it. Overall really great class, very doable, take this class!

Solid choice for public speaking. Gives good feedback and works to alleviate public speaking fears. Class consists of speeches almost every 2 weeks, 5 short open note book quizzes, a couple of less than 3 page writing assignments, and a final. This class requires dedication but is not impossible. Stay on top of due dates and prepare ahead of time.

Professor Bates is a good teacher and gives good feedback. There were at least four speeches I had to do. The last two required an audience of at least three people.

Professor Bates was great. He always left detailed responses and was not a difficult grader as long as you put in the work. There were about 3-4 speeches where long speech outlines were required. Grade was marked down if you didn't fulfill speech time requirement. Fun, but short summer class, so there was a speech every week.

If you are nervous or scared to take a communication class, I definitely recommend Professor Bates. For a summer class there were short quizzes, few speeches and just two speech outlines. Don't double think and enroll his class gets booked really quick.

I had Professor Bates over the summer. His class was so much work. Every week you were preparing for a speech and doing peer reviews. However, he grades fairly easy. If you follow his content you will get an A. My only issue is he does not really respond to emails which is not helpful at all. But I would take his course again.

Professor Bates' COMM01 class is a solid choice for public speaking. While there's a steady workload, he provides great feedback to help overcome speaking fears. I found Unstuck study's speech outlines super helpful for prep.

Professor Bates is caring, and although he gives lots of assignments, there is plenty of time to complete them. Grading can take up to three weeks, and some lectures were unclear.
