HE IS A VERY HELPFUL TEACHER, BUT HE IS VERY BORING!!!!
Good intentions but is the most boring teacher ever. You learn in his class only when he doesn't put you to sleep.
This teacher is the worst teacher i have ever had! If u want 2 hear some1 say "Um & Uh" bout 650 times during 1 session(Bc i was so bored 2 death that i counted)then take this class. he grades u on whether u make disruptions..ex: talking during class and coming in a minute late. and favors kids in the class. If he doesnt like u, ur screwed!!
He sucks! I hated his class. it was the most boring class i have ever had. he makes you listen to boring retarded music and makes you free write. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER I AM WARNING YOU!!!!!
He was a very knowledgable teacher. He was very caring and will help you succeed in the class. He lectures every class which is really boring because no one can ever follow him. He also makes classes do free-writes which is a good way to pass time, its easy. The class isn't too hard, just make sure you do all the papers and journals.
This class was extremley easy class! I got a 3.9. I bought his books but the only one I read was the handbook which I had from last semester which is a good book to refrence. He is very boring and unclear about assignments tho!
Not a bad class. He is very artsy fartsy but that almost makes the class easier. There is a lot of talk about art. THe BEST parts are that you only write one paper the whole semester with one rough draft. The only other major thing is a project which dosen't have to be much either. Trust me he isn't too bad.
at first, i would`ve rather shot myself than to be a part of his class-at first- then i started to get that he actually knew what he was doing. he actually turned into one of the best prof ive ever had. you wont find anyone more helpful than him. if things get confusing all you have to do is ask questions. he even had designated one on one time
Was not very helpful always repeated himself over and over. He does't have class often, he has e-classes where you submit homework by email. He also makes you do book reports.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! he was the worse professor i have ever had. He does not know how to explain himself. His grading is not consistent. All in all a bad professor.
only take him if you are in love with english and doing retarted busy work. im not doing bad in the class but it is just rediculous and he is so boring. i dont recommend him unless you really like to write
HE drivess me nutsss
Couldn't handle him for more than 30 mins, let alone two hours.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!! He is helpful in explaining what he expects from you one on one. He also tells you how to do things, but then he turns around and marks you down for doing it. I did exactly what he said to do on a book review assignment and he gave me a 2.5. Grading is VERY inconsistent. Too much busy work. Save Yourself time and effort.
This class was extremely boring but very easy. Attendance is mandatory but he cancels a lot of classes. You have to do stupid notebooks but they are esay. Basically the class is based on 4 essays. No tests, no final.
Dr. Bennett-Carpenter was somewhat friendly. He showed helpfulness and was understanding when assignments were not turned in on time. Although I have come to realize he does not tolerate talking whatsoever, his class was relatively easy and the information you learn will be sure to stick in your mind down the road.
This guy is weird, pretty sure he is atheist , we had to read two extremely hard books on freud and take online quizzes. He doesn't help you with writing, and is very inconsistent at grading. Says "ahh" or "umm" like at least 500 times a class which is funny but distracting. However your big paper is on the topic of your choice, so thats nice.
Greatly disliked him. He got incredibly upset when I whispered a question to the person sitting next to me. EVERYTHING seems to distract him. Although I didn't do bad in the class, he is pretty unbearable as a professor.
His class is 75% online, which is obviously really nice. His instructions are always really confusing, and usually when I ask for clarification it still doesn't make sense. I've just been doing the assignments and hoping they're right and it's worked so far...
His class was almost all online and consisted of mainly "busy work". It was super easy, except for when it came down to essays and reviews he got harsher in grading. Seems like a nice person, but very confusing to understand his directions. Write MORE than what he asks; you will get a better grade. I didn't use the book once.
Good teacher, mostly online class, it was difficult to understand some stuff
Very helpful. Make sure to keep up with online posts and you will be fine.
He is a good teacher when you actually have class. Most of it is online. I enjoyed it.
i absolutly HATE writing, but i honestly loved this class. probably my favorite class ive takin thus far at OU. this professor is awesome, very clear with what he wants, and very helpful when you have questions or need an extension on a deadline. of course you have to put in the time to write a good paper. TAKE HIM!
Definitely take this class online over the summer. It was really easy, and if you choose a topic that is interesting to you, you will probably learn a lot. You get out what you put in pretty much, but regardless, it is an easy class.
I think he's a very good professor because he explains everything pretty well. Also, if you have any questions or concerns he would be more than happy to answer them and clarify them for you. I like that most of our assignments are online because it gives me time to do the assignment whether it was really late at night or early morning. Loved class
I had a MWF class but we only met on Mondays in class and Wednesdays in small peer groups. He gave us 4 essays to do over the semester. Each essay just builds off of the essay before it. There is 2-3 small assignments online each week. They are only 1-4 points each, but they really add up! They are SOO easy.
He is a horrible teacher! In class discussions are more of a philosophy class. 4 Essays throughout the semester, grades hard. He doesn't really read the essays, gave more than half the class the same essay grade. Gives you lower grades on essays and does not explain why or give any input. For the essays he gives you no structure at all.
Was a horrible teacher! Goes off on philosophical topics during in class discussions. Hard to follow. Does not grade easy on essays (not sure if he even reads them or just skims them). Gives hardly any feedback on assignments or essays so when you get a bad grade you don't know why. Individual meetings with him were pointless, he does not clarify.
Went into this class not knowing what to expect. Professor Bennett-Carpenter made this class not only very educational but also fun. Lot of online work.
I think the people that you see complaining on here are just lazy. He gives you full responsbility of your success, which is how it should be in college. I have zero complaints about him, great professor.
Dr. Bennett-Carpenter is a great writing professor. He is one of the most flexible writing professors I ever had. I took his MW class. A lot of easy but knowledgeable online work (that adds up!) He does help you during office hours. The subject (Writing) is a bit dull though, but he's a very great professor.
He is among the best professors at OU. His projects and assignments are open-ended. Make sure you engage -- he is very affable and willing to work with students. He is also concerned with the well-being of his students. His criticism/grading is constructive and vital if an instructor hasn't seriously evaluated your work before.
He's a really awesome teacher and is always there if and when you need help with anything. He is also very understanding and funny.
A professor that wants students to stand on their own and find what interests them in the world of writing. He is very helpful and understanding with any issue that arises.
He's a good professor who has his student's best interest at heart. He tries his best to make sure that you can pass his class. His work load is enough for you not to feel like you wasted time and money, but not too much where you are anywhere near pressured or overwhelmed. He also gives multiple extra credit opportunities! =)
He's a nice professor that is helpful and nice but he's not an easy essay grader which is a disappointing quality in a writing professor. But no matter who you take bring your essays to the writing center!! They know what's up! They helped bring my grade up after a bad first essay grade. They're magical.
Hated this class! Learned absolutely nothing, the only thing I learned was how to write APA citation :/ Comments are ambiguous, doesn't tell you why he takes off points. Only met in small groups for 20min per week...the most pointless 20min of my week! If you want to learn anything make an appt during his office hours, he's more helpful then.
This class could have easily been entirely online. When we met in class, he either read the directions for an assignment right off of moodle or we worked in small groups that weren't even graded. Bennett-Carpenter wasn't helpful either, he doesn't give much feedback-if any-on assignments. I'd suggest not taking him.
This class could have easily been online but the university wouldn't allow it. The professor was extremely helpful and understanding. However, he doesn't give helpful feedback on you work unless you go ask for it.
A well meaning teacher. Doesn't directly state what he expects you to do, but outlines the direction you're taking and lets you figure out where you'd like to go from there. A lot of writing is involved, but it was a writing class. He assigns one on one meetings and will definitely help if it is needed.
This course could easily have been all online. I found him extremely helpful and he would direct you in the right direction for your work. He isn't an easy grader, but I still received a 3.6 in his class. His assignments were well spaced out for time management and I was never overwhelmed. I would definitely recommend him for future students!
I hated this class. It took him 3 days to go over the syllabus. You pretty much write one big paper during the entire course and it becomes tedious and his comments aren't helpful. I didn't learn much from this class. I would NOT recommend this class
I really enjoyed this class, but it could have easily been online for sure. Class is mandatory but you really only need to sign in so you get credit for being in class. All of his assignments are to be turned in on Moodle, so make sure they are done on time. Overall I really enjoyed this classHe was a very good professor and I would recommend him
I was so over qualified for this mandatory class it wasn't funny. He helped me make the best of a very bad situation, and for this I'm pretty grateful. If I were 18 and new college coursework, he would have been exactly what I was looking for, Professor wise. As a 45 year old returning student, his understanding of my situation was very helpful.
Horrible class. Biggest waste of time. If you're someone who likes your teacher to tell you things straight forward then do not take this class. I hated it. He grades hard and doesn't tell you why, overall it is a huge waste of time. Choose another professor.
Avoid this professor! He does not teach you how to better your writing skills. His assignments are repetitive and useless. I don't think he cares about content in papers, just about citations and sources. Bad at interacting with students. Did not learn one thing that will help my writing skills as a student. Overall very unpleasant experience.
Very nice guy. This class could be taken online because going to class is pointless and boring. Lectures about who knows what. Going to class is mandatory. Lets you do a lot of revisions though!
This professor is very nice and approachable. Going to his office hours was a big help because he told me exactly what he expects, he even extended a due date for me without penalty. Very considerate and grades fairly. He gives many extra credit and revision opportunities. He really cares for the students. Would recommend
Tough grader. However, I learned a lot and his assignments are not a waste as they prepare you for the final assignments.
He is a good teacher. His lectures are some what boring, but his writing assignments are easy to accomplish in a short amount of time. The assignments (which are in class) help the students that are struggling, if you are good at writing they are a waste of time. I would not hesitate to take this class again with the teacher.
He was very understanding and helpful. Also whenever I ran into a difficult situation he allowed extensions on essays and also the opportunity to revise them at the end of the semester to bring your grades up. If anything, watch out for online assignments. They're easy to forget and you can't make the points back up.
He say's you can redo papers for better credit, but only gives one point back at most. He is a nice guy. He makes you sent up an appointment for his office hours.
Grades papers a bit harshly. Even if you make the changes he suggests that you make in order to change advisory grades, there is a good chance the grade will not change. It does not hurt you to make changes, but it also doesn't always help. Overall, this class was pretty easy and I did not mind having to take it.
very GOOD professor. Had him for 2 classes since I have been at OU.
He is one of the best professors I've ever had. His class is inspiring and interesting and easy to understand and follow through with. I took it online and it should be easy for anyone. He's very kind and you only have one test. His quizzes are easy and short. It's a class derived of your own perspective and creative thought. Very openminded.
Dr. BC is definitely an awesome professor. You have to work for your grade but the work is worthwhile. He will open up an entirely different thought process to where you will be able to believe and do things you never thought you would. Definitely a great class.
Each week consists of about 3 assignments ranging different difficulties (responding to a question forum and another may be a project) Very lenient grader but a bit tougher for the one paper and two projects that the semester consists of. Very fast at answering emails. Extra credit! EASY 4.0 but expect to do about an hour or 2 of homework a week.
He was super helpful, just do the homework given and you can get an A no problem. Allows for revisions of work before final grade is given which is super nice, and there are two extra credit opportunities also!
Dr. BC rules! His papers are all based on personal opinions, which I really appreciate. Everything was research based and gave a really solid amount of in class time to do most of the work. Come to class, be engaged and you shouldn't have any problems!
I had Dr. B-C as a substitute for a teacher that left. He was amazing. Easy to understand, knew all of the students in my class on a first-name basis and memorized the topics of the papers we were writing (even for almost a month later when we had him again!). I couldn't take him for WRT160, but I really wanted to. He says he is a tough grader.
I took WRT160 with Dr. BC last year, and when I saw he was teaching this class, I HAD to take it!! Dr. BC is awesome. This class was mostly focused on creativity, and most of the assignments were pretty quick and easy, even fun if you're a creative type. Dr. BC is super nice and helpful, and as long as you try you're probably good to go. TAKE HIM!!
Excellent instructor. Gives good feedback, very willing to discuss concerns, etc. Somewhat tough grader, but papers are revised for the final portfolio.
I had Dr. BC for a writing intensive HC gen ed. While the Moodle forums and small writing assignments were fine (I got 100% on all of them), when it came to our final paper my "advisory grade" was a 3.2, which was a shock considering how well I did the rest of the semester. He was unclear on what I needed to improve. I wouldn't recommend.
Do not take this professor if you can avoid him. He is an extremely difficult grader, and I felt I was standing on my head trying to figure out what he wanted for me to improve my papers. Will give 0 or .1 points back at most even when you see him and fix everything he brought up. He does not like scientific writing, everything must sound informal.
Very different grading scale depending the the topic chosen but I guess that is how most classes are. In class assignments can be fun. The online assignments are tedious. Papers are not too long and receiving the advisory grade is great for improvement but not when the improvement is only .1 or .2 points when you rewrite an entire paper
I'm TERRIBLE at writing, but that didn't matter because this teacher doesn't grade very hard. Even if you fail an essay, he lets you revise it and turn it back in for more points. There are only 3 big essays. 2 are 750+ words and one is 1500+, so they are pretty short. If you ever need an extension, he is very understanding, too. He's a nice dude.
Papers are assigned weeks ahead of time and are any topic of your choosing making them very simple if you have basic writing skills. However, class is repetitive and often we had to get into groups to discuss our papers, so it made going to class a bit annoying as it could have been an online course. It's a very easy A and prof. is very engaged.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! Dr. BC is really patient, gives a lot of chances to improve your papers with detailed feedbacks. Throughout the semester you work on 3 major papers, there's no exams. There's a textbook that he doesn't use in classy, but sometimes you need to write something about the chapters on moodle.
I took Bennett-Carpenter for an online LBS1000 class. He's a really nice guy and was accommodating when I had a family emergency, but he was a very tough grader when it came to the Research Paper draft and final essay. Luckily, the exam questions were all pulled from previous quizzes so that saved my grade. I probably wouldn't take him again.
Overall, Dr. BC is a solid professor. Personally, I didn't have any issues with him but some of my peers expressed his lack of helpful commentary on papers and that he didn't really 'teach' them how to write. Kind of an uncomfortable persona but is very personable and encourages you to reach out if you need help.
Dr Bennett-Carpenter was my teacher for Comp 2 or WRT 1060 and i think i got pretty fortunate to have him. His lectures may not have been the most enthralling however he was always very clear on what was expected from us and if we made mistakes it was easy to get feedback. One thing i will say is my textbook was not opened once the whole time.
Professor BC offered a lot of feedback and checked his emails regularly. I never ran into a problem during his class. He is a great professor and my writing skills definitely improved after taking his class.
Dr BC was very good at giving feedback. If you had questions he would answer them as best that he could. The class was pretty easy. You do 3 papers and you submit them for an advisory grade. You can revise the papers for your final portfolio and increase your grade.
Dr. Carpenter is awesome. The syllabus looks scary but the class is not that hard, it's actually pretty fun. He says he grades the papers toughly but he let all of us get away w a lot . And when the covid ordeal happened, he was super lenient and gave us full points for a bunch of our work as long as we turned it in. You should take him! :)
The moodle forums are quick and pretty painless. The papers are not bad at all easiest gen ed I had to take.
It's a writing class. You can assume the high load of papers and reading. However, he is really lenient because of COVID and grades fairly and gives a ton of feedback. Good guy.
Just follow instructions and write very good papers and you will succeed. Overall a very great professor.
Good professor who offers a lot of feedback on essays. Doesn't do much teaching for an online class, but the feedback was enough to do well in the class. He also gives you an opportunity to revise and get better grades on your papers.
I loved Dr.BC.
Very caring professor, responds to his email in a very timely manner. He gives many opportunities for students to turn in their work late and more than once, if you ask him. It is a load of work each week, but you got plenty of time to get it done.
I just taken Dr.BC as a first semester freshman. All of this assignments was due on Sundays expect papers/projects were due on Wednesdays. During our once a week lecture, we did about 9 minutes of free writing then peer reviewing for the rest of the class in our assigned groups. And his assignments were straightforward. Take Dr.BC!
AMAZING PROFESSOR. PLEASE TAKE.
He is great. He has ALOT of homework/classwork throughout the week. The best way to get a good grade on a project is to introduce a topic that he hasn't heard before. But if you talk about a regular topic such as social media or etc. it will be likely of a lower score (my belief). Overall, he has office hours and he lets you improve project grades.
Solid writing prof as long as you don't take a fully online class. I took one hybrid class and another asynchronous one later on and there was SO much more work in the asynchronous. Don't rely on the essay corrections he talks about at the start of the semester, he won't give many points back but pretty good compared to the other rhetoric profs!
Dr. BC was okay. The class felt like a total waste of time, especially for commuters. We would often work on moodle assignments in class which was a total waste of time. The class should have been async instead of hybrid. His feedback is okay, but I continually got upset when he would point out things i did wrong that I already told him I fixed.
I had Benjamin for his online wrt 1060 course and it was great. It was my first class I had that was completely online and it was one of the easiest classes too. Just give yourself time to write the papers because they are the most important things in the gradebook. He will give you good feedback so do not be intimidated because it's online.
He gives good feedback on papers and you get the chance to resubmit for a better grade.
Pr. Carpenter is phenomenal. The classwork was insanely easy and simple, he was extremely accessible and constantly active in Moodle, gave awesome feedback on papers too. The papers were genuinely fun to write and allowed a lot of creative freedom as well, which I have yet to see in most classes. If you need to take a comp class, this is the one.
A professor that really cares his students do well. I recommend this online class to anyone as long as you can stay on top of the work. No real tests or quizzes, lots of easy discussion posts and peer collaboration. 3 papers for the whole semester. offers extra credit opportunities. He does a good job of grading on time and responding to emails
I think Dr. BC is good for those who struggle with writing papers. He is a very step-by-step professor. He is nice and you can tell he is passionate about his job, which is great! Some of the work felt redundant, but he just wants to make sure everyone understands the assignment
