This professor is great and communicates well. Going to class is fun! He makes it clear what you need to do to get a good grade and makes the coursework very doable. Highly recommend!
The material for the class is really interesting, but the way the class was set up made it difficult to stay engaged. 40-60 page readings a day some weeks, and you don't go over most of it in lecture. A big group project throughout the semester, another project, a midterm and final are the big grades. Tests are hard, make sure you study days before
Although attendance isn't mandatory, you get extra credit for coming to class. Dr. B was by far my most proactive professor amidst the whole COVID mess. He really cares about your success and wants you to succeed. He's super accessible outside of class and is very clear in what he expects you to do. Take him if you can for research methods!!!
Prof. Blankenship is the type of instructor who will challenge you. He requires serious work from his students, and this has helped me learn research methods. Don't expect to get an A if you don't understand how psychology research works. With that said, I found Prof. Blankenship to be flexible and understanding as well. I would highly recommend.
Dr. Blankenship is challenged with teaching a class focused on diversity in an unfortunately culturally homogeneous school. His expertise in this realm shows in his examples and remarks about his research. He pushes you to think beyond how you normally think and the reading supports the idea that diverse ideas come from many sources. Great class!
This was the worst class I have ever taken. He makes you do peer reviews, which is basically the blind leading the blind. He takes forever to grade any assignments and get them back to you. He overloads you with homework and quizzes and projects and test you just feel burnt out. He almost made me switch my major. he made my experience so miserable
This class was chaos from start to finish. Dr. Blankenship's lack of clear expectations made this class a living nightmare, but the GA was helpful. There were always assignments due for obscene amounts of points that he took weeks to grade, always with unclear guidelines. Tests were unreasonably challenging on content straight from the text. Avoid!
Dr. Blankenship is really adaptable and open to criticism. You MUST work hard to do well in this class; make sure to stay on top of reading! Lectures are a little bland but effective and sometimes the amount of reading is too much. The material that you'll learn by the end of this class is worth the work.
Loved how he handled the situation once the semester went online. The class itself is a lot of work and very content heavy, but if you put in the effort and reach out to him, you can get a good grade. You can tell he really does want his students to do well and cares about them. Lots of reading from the textbook, and exams can be difficult, though.
I took Dr. Blankenship for Summer Session of Psyc211. I really enjoyed his class. He was always accessible and polite when exchanging emails. His paper guidelines can be a bit tricky but they are not difficult. It is a lot of work for 4 weeks but it is not overwhelming. He organizes the class very well! He handled online learning so well! Take him!
This was definitely the best online class I took this semester. Professor Blankenship was incredibly helpful and accessible outside of class. This is certainly not an easy class, but his helpfulness made it really doable. Take this class for 211, but expect to work hard!
Not only is the subject matter of this course taught really well, but professor Blankenship is very accessible outside of class, and made this class really easy to follow (since it was online with COVID). If you put in the work, expect to do well. Take this class!
Really enjoyed the material, very organized for online but the workload was overwhelming. Chapter quizzes, project/exam due every 2 weeks, lots of assignments for little points. Curriculum included 2 textbooks. He was always available/quick to respond, listened to concerns, gave ec, but this class was not easy. It will challenge you/burn you out.
I love Dr. Blankenship's class. There are 4 papers which you are given plenty of time for, one final presentation and small assignments weekly. The class is extremely organized and I would 100% recommend his class because he gives you so many resources to succeed and he is always willing to help!
A lot of assignments such as 2 quizzes a week and a project/test every 2 weeks. He gives 2 chances to take the quiz which is nice but the reading assignments can be quite long/boring. He is a really nice person who makes time for questions and even asks students for critiques of his class. He doesn't grade too hard and is very passionate.
Dr Blankenship is one of the nicest professors I've had. The content of this class is easy, he's a super lenient grader, and he gives tons of extra credit. The one down side is that it is very homework and reading heavy. I definitely recommend Blankenship and this class
Took him last semester and would take him again!! Yes, there was a little bit of reading but he mostly covered it in his lectures. He gives a lot of extra credit so make sure to come to class.
Blankenship was great! This class is honestly very enjoyable. I will say that his exams were not my favorite and their aren't easy. 4 exams and quizzes for every chapter total of 15. There are also 4 projects which are super easy if you at least pay attention to the PowerPoints and ask questions. He does drop lowest of the exams as well as quizzes.
One of the easiest classes I've taken. He tries so hard to get people to participate it made me sad. Questions on the quizzes/exams were worded a little weird sometimes but he drops some if a lot of people dont get them right. Easy class but wouldn't take him again.
He's a great professor and cares a lot about his class and topic, but there is a lot of work I was not expecting. I may have not spread it out the best but for every chapter there was an online quiz and discussion post. Then every unit there was an essay type writing/assignment and test. Although he dropped some grades later!
I took him for psyc101; this was his first time teaching it in spring 2023 and he was the worst professor I've ever had. Yes is very nice and answers emails but his tests are EXTREMELY difficult. I have two of my SENIOR psychology majors help me and I got a 50 on one of the tests. PLEASE DON'T TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY A.
Every class is a lecture where he presents using point solutions. You can literally not come to class and have someone send the presentation code. All the grades are easy As except the exams. Not the best class, but pretty easy to slide through with little effort.
For your own sake choose a different professor. In most classes you should be fine as long as you listen and read the textbook, but in this class you kind of learn English, mostly because his test questions are nearly impossible to comprehend. Never again with this professor.
He seems like a nice person, but this class was really a struggle for no reason. The test were the hardest tests I have ever taken and they make up 50% of your grade. I get better grades on my organic chemistry exams than this class if that puts it into perspective how absurd the tests are.
way too much work for an intro class. expects us to do way too much. tests are hard asf for no reason, and often puts the wrong information for quizzes. very nice and cares about students, but very difficult. His mic also cuts out and gives entire class a headache, but not really his fault
His class was pure lectures, but he explained the content well. If you didn't go to class you could still get participation points via point solutions which was nice! Lots of grades so it's easy to get an A and most things are unlimited attempts. Would take his class again!
Psyc211 is a hard class, but this class was really overwhelming. It was a lot of work and the writing assignments are difficult. He is a nice guy, just kinda bland
Professor Blankenship is an amazing choice for PSYC211, his lectures are informative, his grading criteria are clear, and he offers tons of help on assignments. He is also accessible outside of class and provides his students with the tools needed to succeed in his class. I recommend taking his class during the summer although it is accelerated.
I thought psychology was going to be an enjoyable class going into this year, but this class made me hate it. So much busy work for a gen ed, you have a textbook reading, practice q's, and a quiz every week which is basically the whole class, not worth going into class because he just goes over what you do in the textbook, honestly, a lazy prof.
Attendance is graded by poll questions in which you actually have to get correct, not to mention how half of the questions have timers that don't even allow enough time to read the question and answer it. You essentially have 3 assignments per week, all busy work or in other words bs. The work load itself isn't technically hard, but is very tedious
Dr. Blankenship was a good professor and actually made me realize I should change my major to PSYC. Attendance is taken through polls every class so you have to participate. Online textbook needed. Roughly 2 assignments & 1 quiz every week, but almost everything is open notes. Power points are info heavy, but if you listen you'll be alright.
This class is how every gen ed should be laid out. 4 online tests, 12 online homework quizzes and required online textbook reading which are really easy. You don't need to go to every class but their participation points every class and if you don't have enough it will hurt your grade. Really good class and a good guy.
I like Ben Blankenship, he is a very kind, caring, and understanding professor. The only reason he gets a 4/5 is because of PollEverywhere, a software which forces participation in a poor way. It's hard to participate in a 300 student class, and PollEverywhere is not the way to do it.
Honestly feel like less busy work would make me learn more about psych. This class should be fun and interesting for gen ed, but instead, you have to spend about 5 hours per week doing busy work. This class overtook my major classes in class work which was absurd. All the weekly quizzes are from the internet so use chegg and easy A for each quiz.
He was fine. We read from a textbook and then get a lecture with nearly the same info. There were 3 assignments per week. Read the textbook chapter (I took notes on it which took me like 7 hours), do an activity (~30-60 mins), then a 10-question quiz (15 min). Every 3 chapters was a test which was a tad hard. Overall he was fine no huge issues.
great professor and a great class to get into psychology. He really cares about the students.
Dr. Blankenship is very caring and knows what he is talking about. It is a little bit extensive for the work outside of class if taking it as a gen ed. But for psychology majors, it's a great class and I highly recommend this professor.
amazing phenomenal professor, super kind and inclusive and clearly loves what he's teaching. Great class would recommend
Super organized class, everything is open note but you should still study! Soft deadlines for everything besides the tests (there are four of them). Each week is a new chapter with an interactive textbook, practice, quiz, and two lectures. Attend the Kahoot review sessions for the tests!!!
If you are looking for an easy gen ed, don't take this class. It's all busy work. I was putting in more hours a week for this class than any of my major classes. Lectures are pulled straight from the textbook so going to class feels useless but you can't skip because of the pollev attendance questions. tests are open note tho so there's that.
This is a relatively simple class, and there are many grades and opportunities for extra credit. There are about 2-3 assignments every week you do on your own time, which can be a lot but they are easy grades. The professor is good about communication and has good lectures. For attendance, he does poll everywhere everyday.
Passionate about what he teaches, cares about your success, and always is willing to help you in anyway. Always replied to emails fairly quick, attendance wasn't mandatory, lots of extra credit opportunities, tests were all take home, kinda lecture heavy and a lot busy work for a GenEd, but kept the lectures interesting. Overall great professor.
Although this professor is very nice, he takes his 100 level courses WAY to seriously to the point where you will be drowning in work for this gen ed class requirement. He is very unaware of the fact that his work is just viewed busy work and he will just babble on until class is over just so he doesn't lose a minute of "teaching time."
Dr. Blankenship is kind and passionate but not engaging. He very much cares about what he teaches but I think it is to his disadvantage cause his class is mostly taken as a GenEd. That said, it's ridiculously easy. I did not pay much attention in class, I just skimmed the important points from the textbook and still got a 96. No harm in taking him.
Super nice professor who is very understanding. Fast paced lectures with a lot of info, but very interesting. Homework assignments take up a lot of time. All tests and quizzes were online and open note which is life saving, but you should still study. You can do well as long as you put in some work and do all of the assignments.
I loved this class! Lectures can get boring but attendance is graded through PollEverywhere so I recommend regularly going to class. He's very nice and is available for office hours, and has plenty of TA's to help you too!
Dr. Blankenship is a great professor! He is always available and helpful. All the exams and final is online and open note! Attendance is mandatory and he uses poll everywhere for credit. Overall a great professor, would recommend taking his class.
Professor Blankenship is great! His class is super organized (in fact, the most organized professor I've had thus far at JMU). The exams are online, but they can be a tad tricky. However, he offers extra credit for each exam which really helps your grade! Attendance is mandatory, but his lectures are quite engaging. Take him!
Prof. Blankenship is very nice and passionate about what he teaches. The lectures moved quickly but were pretty interesting. Expect to dedicate a good chunk of time to homework/readings, there were 15 online textbook chapters that each had interactive questions and a quiz. All tests were open-book (including the final!) which was very helpful.
I took his online class over the summer. Everything is very straightforward in the syllabus, aside from the many many minuscule assignments he'll have you complete in order to unlock larger assignments. Use your time wisely because everything is compacted due to summer!! Definitely difficult but reach out and he is quick to help. He cares!!
I'm not a psych major and I enjoyed this class. There is LOTS of homework each week but the textbook is actually interesting tbh. If you aren't afraid of a little busy work take it! Professor Blankenship is a very friendly prof, his lectures move quickly but they are interactive, match the readings, and include visuals. Exams are online!!
So this class is actually pretty easy if you're willing to just lock in for a few hours every week. ALL TESTING IS ONLINE. It includes weekly RMCs which are basically readings quizzes based off the textbook, which is online. There are only like 3 or 4 'exams' which are timed and take home. There are other weekly graded things as well
DO NOT take this class. This class has so much busy work that is pointless to the class. Further, he was very unfair in his grading. He says in the syllabus that he will not give extensions on certain assignments, but last minute decided to give extensions, which is unfair to the students who did the assignment on time.
Professor Blankenship is passionate about psychology and he's sweet, but the work in this class is insane. Weekly textbook questions/reading, inquisitives that take forever, discussion board, and a quiz. The work isn't hard, there's just so much of it, especially with other classes. I'd only take him if your other classes are light in work/effort.
I loved my experience with Dr. Blankenship! He is the most organized and put-together professor I have experienced thus far. I am passionate about psychology and enjoyed the lecture and course load, but I will warn those who do not have a strong pull towards psych that this class is definitely a lot of work- you will need to be able to apply info.
This class is so easy but a lot of async work. You don't even have to pay attention in class as long as you read the textbook. 4 weekly assignments with an async test every ~3 weeks. Just do your work on time and you will get a good grade. Attendance not mandatory but polls done for a 12% of overall grade with a lot of room for error/incompletion.
Using Inquisitive is VERY frustrating. There's so much to do every week but it can be manageable. What's most annoying is how you have to complete the modules in order, even though he says most of them are "soft deadlines" and only the RMC is a "hard deadline," so it's just a lie. Otherwise, it's kind of a laid-back class as long as you're reading.
Very decent Professor, good at giving lectures, very accommodating and personable even with such a gigantic class size, great knowledge of the material. The workload is on the heavier side, but it's so incredibly easy and free. Definitely a very intuitive class, even if it wasn't super super fulfilling.
Dr. Blankenship is kind and is very passionate about psychology. For a 101 gened, he does assign a lot of homework, but all tests, including the midterm and final, are online.
Dr. Blankenship is great! He really tries to make the lectures engaging and fun. The material talked about in the course is really interesting and you can tell Dr. Blankenship is very passionate. He was also a great communicator and emailer. There is quite a few things due every week, but they are not hard and you can do them at your own pace!
A few online assigments every week but mostly nothing super time consuming. Everything is online except for two in class discussions, but attendance is checked every day by polleverywhere. Lenient with extensions and missing class though.
PSYC101. Professor is pretty good and the lectures are decent. In order to do well you need to be consistent with the required reading and homework, which sucks at times - procrastinators beware. All the quizzes are at home and open-note though. Attendance is tracked, but there's a lot of leniency given. An A is doable if you put the effort in.
TAKE HIM! Lecture attendance is not mandatory but every class if you attend you get extra credit, making it a VERY easy class to get an A in. He is very sweet and funny and the lectures are actually engaging. All tests and assignments ONLINE TAKE HOME! NO EXAMS! everything multiple choice! Easiest class to get an A in. It's impossible to not pass.
Take home quizzes and tests were so nice. His lectures are very in depth and long. Ngl, the content is a little much for a gen ed class, but that is just because of the subject he taught. He is really nice and flexible, so if you just talk to him he'll work with you.
Professor Blankenship was pretty easy compared to what I have heard with other 211 professors. There are 4 written papers but they're totally doable. Attendance is not mandatory for lectures but lab is mandatory. You work with a lab group and have a final project together. Overall I would recommend this professor but get ready to do some work.
The class is very lecture heavy, but if you go to class and participate you will be fine. The canvas layout was confusing and took a while to get used too. Overall he really cares as a professor
This class wasn't that bad since a lot of the work was online, but we had SO much work compared to what was necessary. The modules were longg and there were so many different pieces that were due each week. I had to dedicate a lot of time to this class. He also cares if you don't go to lecture despite attendance not being required.
CLASS IS NOT FRIENDLY FOR EMPLOYED/WORKING STUDENTS. Save yourself from taking an accelerated version, information isn't heavy but it just takes too long to be considered reasonable. Outside of work, I spend every waking moment working on the class assignments. His "words of the week" are sometimes impossible to find if they're there at all.
Like the other review said: CLASS IS NOT FRIENDLY FOR EMPLOYED/WORKING STUDENTS. When emailing for an extension Prof was extremely demeaning and said that I didn't give a good enough excuse and compared me to the other students in the class. Overall, terrible class to take in a 4 week period.
Dr. Blankenship is a good professor but he gives a lot of work and reading for a gen-ed. Notes are posted on canvas but doesnt cover all of the textbook material. There is A LOT of textbook reading and you are tested on it. Has take home quizzes, exams are online, and attendance is required but there is some leniency. An A is doable in this class.
This class is basically just memorizing 500+ terms and definitions. I find it really difficult but the professor is nice.
The workload is actually insane. If you fall behind, it is basically impossible to catch back up. The professor is nice but the work is just way too much for a gen ed.
This class is a lot of work. Several online assignments every week, including a quiz. Lots of memorization of terms and concepts. Most of the assignments feel like busywork, but everything is online, including the 3 exams and final.
Passionate about what he teaches. Most of your work will be through an interactive textbook. Chill if you pace yourself every week. Participation points every class through poll everywhere. Has TAs to grade a lot of the work. Lots of material so make sure you take time outside of class to study and do your work. Unit tests are lowkey a bit hard.
Professor Blankenship is a very nice guy but I didn't love his teaching style. Nearly every class we sat through an hour and fifteen minute fast paced lecture that he read directly off of the slides. He gives SO MUCH HOMEWORK. Definitely more work and effort than I anticipated putting into this Gen Ed. I had to teach myself much of the material.
Everything is online; homework, tests, attendance, textbooks. Everything is super easy and there are so many grades that one bad one wouldn't matter that much. Super kind and easy to reach outside of class. You don't even have to read the required reading to do the homework and such. But everything takes forever.
honestly not terrible if you pay attention
The material was not hard but the amount of stuff assigned over each week was actually crazy since this is a 101 class. He makes this course overly advanced compared to other Psych professors. If you have a heavy semester, try and get a professor that will not assign more work than all your other classes combined. He reads off slides the whole class
All I'm gonna say is if you are considering taking this course as a GenED, DO NOT. The workload is crazy. None of it is hard, but you are going to be tested on 100+ terms every few weeks, unless you enjoy pointless studying this class isn't for you.
PSYC 101 was a lot of work and I had to study A LOT, the tests are proctored and locked down and weigh heavily towards your grade. The info is interesting and I think Prof. B does a great job at explaining content but it is a lot to memorize. He is understanding and I feel like he definitely does care about his students success. I would take again!
He is a very nice guy and cares a lot about what he teachers. However, he gives lots a homework every week and is quite time consuming for a gen ed. The exams and quizzes are all online, but attendance to class is mandatory.
If you fail this class, it is genuinely on you. He has so many opportunities to do well and make up your bad grade. the class itself is pretty boring but it is worth it.
He gives out so much work every week, though everything is online, he makes the class harder than it already is, and attendance is mandatory. His class is honestly a lot of work if you aren't prepared to do all that then do not take this class.
4 tests (2 are cumulative), you can retake 1 at the end of the semester if you want. Small extra credit available throughout the semester but soooo much work every week. Had more work in his class than I did in ochem…. But it is possible to do well, you HAVE to study for those tests - learned the hard way
