The exams are pretty difficult, but it's not difficult to get an A in this class. The professor is a nice guy, as long as you go to he's office hour, he will remember your name.
Don't take this class if you don't have to. He is awful at teaching and asks way too many clicker questions that are absolutely useless yet you have to be there to get the points. His tests are OD hard and he gives no help to study for them, he thinks this is a 3000 level course when its an INTRO
about 15 clicker questions per class which are so difficult. huge chunk of your grade. 2 - 3 online quizzes per week that take a good amount of time to complete. curved the exam because everyone failed. you literally cannot skip this class.
I bet these people who rated low has never take these class seriously, I am doing ok by reading textbook and going to class. By the way, my first language is not English so I can't understand him very well during the class, even so i am still pretty sure I will get a good grade at the end of the semester
Worst class I have ever taken. Accounting, Mirco/Macro, Information Systems, etc. were much less challenging than this class. You are expected to be an expert to do well in this class. If you don't want to ruin your life, gpa, and mental health, I genuinely advise you steer clear of this class. Also, do not ever think about missing a class :)
Although he gives lots of homework, he is never a tough grader since he offers GREAT NUMBER OF extra credits and exams curve. He is really nice and patient, and his PPT is really useful. I feel sad when people talking bad about him, he is a great teacher!
homework makes me tired but I got a really good grade
On a positive note Ben is a great teacher and seems to care about what he does. BUT this class with take over your life. You need to read every night and then study what you just learned for the clicker questions. There are no days off for this class. If you are looking for an easy science class (for non sciencey people) you will not find it here.
I took this class with lab to get an a good grade instead of having to take chem or physics with a lab. I thought this class was suppose to be easy. However, studying for the exams was impossible. The exams are about 55 questions, but he would give you a 12 page study guide with over 300 sample questions to practice.
GSCI was easy for an A, but a LOT of work. Do not take this class if you are looking to do as little work as possible. 2 quizzes online a week, and up to as many as 17 clicker questions per lecture. Clicker questions can be difficult, but if you get over a 60%, you get full credit. Annoying lectures, and did not like his teaching assistant.
Lots of homework (prep quizzes, reading and videos before each lecture); doesn't narrow down what is on closed book tests (gave us 17 pages of bullets points to memorize for the final). Do not take this class.
Professor Chilson-Parks is super nice. I took this class with the lab and did really good in both. Yes, it is a lot of work. You have two prep quizzes to do every week before lecture and you have to read in order to do well on them. The final is cumulative which is pretty annoying, but he gives ALOT of extra credit. Easy to get like B/B-
I took this class almost a year ago and I still have nightmares about it!! For reference, Im an A student at UConn, however, this was the WORST and most challenging class Ive taken. The tests were unattainably difficult. For the midterm, my study guide was almost 100 pages. The best advice I can give anyone at UConn is: do not take this class.
Don't take this class unless you're prepared to give it your all and then some. I'm a 4.0 student at UConn but this was the first class I've ever P/F. I took it as a lab requirement as opposed to bio/chem/physics. JUST TAKE BIO/CHEM/PHYSICS. This class is much much harder. So much homework (non of it googleable) and the labs are equally as bad!
I went into Professor Chilson-Parks class with low expectations, however after this course I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the subject matter. I left with a new found interest of Geology. He's a really young and energetic but also reasonable professor. If you put in effort then you will do very well in his class. Definitely read the book.
I became interested in geography through this class
Ben was cool, I liked him. His lectures are straightforward but you need to do a lot of prep work for each of them (there's a quiz due before each lecture). His exams are pretty easy as long as you study what's on the study guide and he does include clickers in the grade. The lab is more difficult (3hrs every week) and the lab final is difficult.
The Professor himself is great, he is very straightforward and is well-versed in the subject he is teaching. The class itself isn't that difficult, if you attend classes, participate, and pay attention a A is guaranteed.
I feel as though these reviews don't do professor justice. Chilson-Parks is an extremely nice and thoughtful individual, however, the course itself, GSCI 1050, is just unappealing and boring. There is only so much that the professor can do to spice up a course dedicated to understanding the Earth's dynamic functions.
He was a good teacher-always made time for students outside of class but definitely has a short temper. Young guy who's pretty passionate about the subject which makes it more interesting. Clicker questions galore (don't be late) and the tests covered some material that wasn't even mentioned in class which was frustrating.
He's a nice professor, he has a bit of a short temper but, it's a bit difficult during times like COVID. The course itself is a snoozefest, there is only so much you can do to make a class that discusses "Earth's Dynamic Environment" appealing and interesting. The TA's for this class is awful, David Vohra was the TA in charge of my lab, horrible.
Way too much work for what it is. The online Group meetings with the TA are useless. Also requires the intrusive LockDown browser for exams... and each exam has 5-10 page study guide. Nothing is really taught; you're pretty much left to your own devices. If you're a liberal arts major (like me) looking for an easy gen ed, this isn't it.
Ben is a great guy, but his class is awful. The class is centered around students teaching the class, and it's a requirement for everyone to teach at least one day. His instructions are unclear for the reflections/essays as well. The final project is extremely demanding. He takes forever to grade too. Was gonna minor in GSCI but not anymore..
Overall, I really enjoyed this professor and his class! The course definitely emphasizes personal accountability, meaning you have to stay on top of your assignments and course schedule to do well. But he's really personable and nice, and he explains all of the concepts extremely well. He makes what could be a boring class really interesting!
I took this class because I didn't want to take bio/chem. HUGE MISTAKE, there are 3 exams and about 25 quizzes. The first 2 exams cover over 250 pages each (10 chapters). Basically no class meetings, you're on your own and if you're not science-y like me then good luck! 0/10 do not take this class.
I feel as if Ben is overrated. Yeah, he may have a lot of work, and there may be lots of content on his exams, but at the same time, hes a really cool dude and helpful. Hell also give you extra credit when needed, and overall, I just dont see how he has temper problems when all the times Ive seen him lecture, hes just been a very chill dude.
At first I was scared based on the reviews. The first exam was on lockdown and had a curve, the other 2 weren't lockdown and open notes. 25 quizzes 3 exams and a couple short discussion posts. I am NOT science-y but he lets you re-do 4 questions from each exam to boost your grade. Super nice guy but don't skip mandatory lectures bc in-class quizzes
Lots of quizzes in this class: at least 2 per week w/ corresponding short responses for each chapter. I honestly could not sit through his online lectures as they were super dry but I am sure I could have done better if I had. If you put the effort in, you should be able to do well but it is one of the tougher gen ed classes.
This class is not difficult whatsoever. Before taking the course I saw the reviews and was worried, but I ended up finishing the course with a 101%. There are a few mandatory lectures but its mostly just reading the textbook and doing corresponding quizzes. You get two chances on the quiz, and a ton of extra credit opportunities.
I was scared to take this class in the beginning (I'm not a science major) however he puts in a lot of grades in and offers extra credit at the end of semester. Course was challenging but interesting. He offers a lot of opportunities to do well in the class and HW is relatively easy. 100% recommend going to his office hours or his TA's.
Tons of work and not the best person in the world. Pretty boring lectures.
It's an okay class, there are a few group projects that really affect your grade and the final project is a pain but the rest of the course is pretty easy. You have to do quizzes before every class but there are quizlets for them and the tests are pretty straightforward. I don't think I'd recommend it though unless you really like geosciences.
As long as you do all your work, I dont see why you cant get an A. Its a pretty easy class but there is a lot of work. There were about four group essays that are easy but depends on how your group works together in getting it done. Final project is easy but requires a lot of work. His lectures were really boring. No one wanted to participate.
Out of all my classes this one by far gave me the most work. Tests are hard and there's LOTS of reading outside of class if you really want a high grade. Quizzes are easy and as long as you have good group mates you should be fine. Plus, there was extra credit. Would not take again however wasn't my worst class.
Ben is a really nice guy and cares a lot about what he teaches. As long as you do the work you can get an easy A in the class. Lectures are boring, but I liked that Ben is always willing to work with you and I knew what to expect on tests and quizzes. I was worried at first but this ended up being my easiest and most consistent class.
Took this class last minute for my E-course and a little confused by the recent reviews hes gotten for this class! I felt like if you showed up half the time and turned in your work youll get a good grade. Quizzes are small and easy, and tests are all MC with great study guides (I just never studied lol.) Id def take him for an easy E-course!
Lots of opportunity to get your grade right, lectures are boring but not mandatory. Test can be difficult.
Such a great guy and gives lots of opportunities for people to improve their grades. I took this the semester of Spring 2020 when COVID hit and it still wasn't even bad online. Took this for my science credit and found it super interesting although the labs were kind of tricky and math-based - but the lectures were iclicker and not bad.
The worst professor ever. He expects you to already know the material before class. And he has these online videos and during class he doesn't even teach well. You might as well just learn from the textbook and not show up to class since going is so useless.
ben is very nice! the class had many opportunities to get your grade up, and none of the work was that difficult even if you don't pay attention at all in the lectures. the ta was kinda annoying when grading some of the work, but other than that it is definitely an easy E course!
Hardest class ever! Mandatory participation in class and "exit slips" due the night after class. He claims they will be under 15 minutes often take hours. Horribly boring lectures, shows a picture on the board and talks to fast. 2 quizzes per week, 2 exit slips per week, PollEverywhere questions for participation. DO NOT TAKE!!!
The class actually wasn’t too bad, it was just a little annoying. There were many short quizzes for each chapter, they weren’t too hard and just like five multiple choice, so as long as you kept up with the assignments, your grade will be fine. However, he was not the best lecturer and it didn’t really help me understand the topics better.
Terrible, worst class I have ever taken. I was actually interested in GSCI as a major, but because of how awful this class was I decided to do Environmental Science.
I took this class Fall 2020 when it was online but am rating him now because I was reminded by a friend of just how bad my experience was. He didn't lecture so we read 2-3 chapters of the book a week and took stupid online quizzes. Grading was mostly exams, that had a 5 page single spaced study guide of things to know that quizzes didn't relate to.
Can not do his job correctly even if he tried. Tests were so specific, and expected us to know the most menial things. Avoid him if you can. I feel bad for people that have to take his upper level courses.
I took this class to satisfy the lab credit for business and hated it. It was really boring, had a lot of busy work, and required attendance through poll everywhere and exit tickets. That being said, I did okay in the class and as obnoxious as it was, I do think I would prefer this to a bio or chem class.
Ben does not properly teach a lecture. He gives a crazy amount of work and tests on the most microscopic information. HARDest class I have ever taken. DO NOT RECOMMENT BEN
Hated this class at first but Ben is a really great teacher. As long as you take this class seriously and do the minimum its not hard to get an A. LOTS of extra credit opportunities. Didn't read the textbook but as long as you go to lectures and do the quizzes you'll be fine. Just expect that there will be a little bit more work than other classes.
So insanely boring. Textbook reading is required every night + a quiz before every class. Lectures are mandatory because there are PollEv questions that are graded and an assignment after each class. Tests arent bad and he scales so I ended up with a really good grade. If you dont do homework or cant handle a lot of work dont take this class.
I enjoyed Chilson-Parks's lectures. I never found myself being bored. He's very knowledgeable and cares about his job.
Ben was very willing to help students and his lectures were fairly easy to follow. You have to go to class most of the time because he gives exit tickets and there are questions in class that count for participation. The participation in class you only have to get 50% or more of the questions right to get 100. Overall he's really chill and helpful.
The problem with this course is that it really is very easy, but there is SO MUCH work. Quiz before every class, in class clicker quizzes, exit ticket after every class, etc. Exams were pretty difficult. Just a lot for a gen ed requirement. He's a great guy though so if you're into geoscience, def take him.
Ben wasn't bad, he cares about his student and willing to help. But you need to get ready for unlimited reading, writing prompts, and prep quizzes. You need to READ the textbook and course book and take the prep quizzes before the class start, but quiz is open book and note. I think this class are lecture and reading heavy... GOOD LUCK!
If you do not want to read DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The subjects we were reading about were interesting but the amount of reading was not manageable at all. He seems like a good professor though and is very organized. I would definitely recommend for someone who is very interested in the subject but be prepared for A LOT of reading and assignments
Ben is one of the worst professors at this university. His teaching style is awful, his assignments are awful, his finals are ridiculous, and he doesn't even use his own material he just uses everything left behind by a different even worse professor. He doesn't teach for us to learn, he teaches like we already know what he's talking about.
This class wasn't useful to the field of geoscience, and very difficult. There's a journal entry and writing prompt due every week, as well as a weekly reading quiz. The entire class is focused on learning about the philosophy of systems and there is no hands-on experience even though it says there will be in the syllabus.
This is possibly the worst class I have ever taken. The amount of work for this class is absurd and difficult. The exams were designed to be two hours but took 3 and a half. The labs had nothing to do with the overall course, and the expectation is that you must go to office hours to pass. If I had to take this class again, I'd change majors.
I am not a fan of this class at all. There is tons of reading to do and it is not interesting unless you're really interested in Earth science. I took this as my E credit because I thought an 1000 level class would be attainable, but it is not. I have no idea what his midterm is about to look like, but I do not feel prepared at all. Don't take.
Top 5 teacher at UCONN. gives you all the materials you need to get an A in the course.
The lectures were very boring but mandatory with pollev. Weekly quizzes were very easy. Exams were hard but curved insanely because everyone does poorly. Overall easy class as long as you get the work done you will get an easy A.
I really enjoyed his teaching. He's obviously very passionate about Geology and he made the lectures interesting and easy to follow. Exams were easy if you study. There are some in-class participation points, but once you get to x number of points, you get full credit.
Ben's a great professor, he cares about his material and students. The lectures are engaging and he explains things pretty well. More work than most 1000 courses, but none of it is hard or takes that long. I'm taking another class with him next semester and I'm really looking forward to it. Tip: you can just skim the textbook and course book.
All of his assignments are very clearly organized, and you never have to question when anything is due. I took his class for my E course requirement and I would recommend it to anyone who needs to still fulfill that. Your grade is based off of poll-ev participation and homework assignments, not very test heavy. Work load is not too overwhelming.
Took this class for E credit and was really easy. Graded on in-class poll questions, weekly quizzes (3 attempts), weekly writing prompts (took 30-45 mins), midterm, final, and final project. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Attendance was required for poll questions. Class is not test heavy. Overall easy if you do the work, easy grader, easy A.
Ben has us write weekly assignments and the prompts would be so ridiculous and not have anything to do with the class. He asked if author of this article have nuance? That wasn't really hard just annoying, but some of the questions are impossibly confusing to do. This is not an easy gen ed, if you need an E credit, that literally any other class.
I went to most of the lectures and did pretty well in the class. The lectures contain enough info that I rarely ever read the textbook (which he provides an online copy of for free!) There are a lot of easy quizzes and writing prompts, but I found those easy if the lectures were attended and common sense was used.
His weekly quizzes and writing prompts are super easy and the material isn't hard to understand. The midterm and final are curved and the final project is time-consuming but he gives a lot of help with that. He gives extra credit on the quizzes too.
dudes alright. light work. but lab is horrendously awful. class is fine, in fact, some would say its too easy. Lab=bad if you don't have a good ta. my ta was pretty bad ngl. you would have to be pretty 'thick' not to get an A tho. you learn alot if you put in the work, if you don't, you wont. lot of work but manageable. good luck fellas.
Ben's grading policy is very good, each of the exams only accounts for 8% of the total grade, and there is a final project. But he requires attendance, because he would use Poll Everywhere in lecture to ask questions. His lectures are more interesting than labs, the only downside is that he always procrastinates in grading HWs and Exams.
Be prepared if you are not a geoscience major (Econ here). This class is not fun and he doesn't make it any easier by his tough grading. The class can be a lot of work at times and the time put in for some of the assignments doesn't seem to show based off of the ridiculous grading. Ben is a nice guy but I would not recommend taking this course.
This is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. His teaching style is very engaging and the course material is very straight forward. There is a moderate amount of work to be put in but it is not hard. He allows cheat sheets for each of the exams and the homework is relatively easy. There is a final project but there is topic freedom.
Super nice guy but you have to go to lectures since he uses Poll Everywhere. This is super annoying and the questions are honestly pretty hard. The lab practical was super difficult, the exams you're allowed a cheat sheet but have to in depth know the material even without the cheat sheet. Oddly specific exam questions and weekly quizzes as well.
He is a cool, fun guy, easy to work with and understanding. He was very helpful and always accessible, really liked the course it was just a lot of work. Would take him again, rock on.
Just attend lecture. His slides are very easy to follow and he posts everything online, so if you miss something you can always look at it again. However, there is a large participation grade that consists of answering questions through a polls app on your phone. Other than that this was definitely the easiest class I've ever taken.
Awesome professor, quick to email back and also is very good with meeting outside of class. I took this as a gen-ed and found the class pretty interesting. Only negative thing I would say is that there is a lot of work to do come finals week (final exam, lab practical and semester project).
Seriously the best professor I have ever had. His lectures were not hard to follow and his tests were very manageable. He let the class bring a one page "cheat sheet" for tests. It was easy to set up times to meet with him outside of class for extra help, and overall just a very nice guy.
He is super caring and friendly, and always wants to make things as easy as possible. Some assignments can be lengthy, but they are always for a good reason, and don't feel pointless. All assignments have been manageable and fairly easily graded. He lectures at a good pace, and is well versed in technology and innovating teaching methods.
Ben's lectures are well structured, informative and not boring. I am not a geology major, but this class has been quite simple if you show up most of the time and pay attention during lecture. He is really easy going and wants everyone to do well. I would 100% recommend taking his Earth 1050 class for your required lab.
ben was great as a professor. he did assign a lot of work but you don't really need to do the readings to get the work done or pass. overall i probably spent 1-2 hours a week doing his homework unless there was a project coming up.
Ben is Him today, Him tomorrow, Him forever
Too much work for a class about rocks
Ben was a good professor. He's very passionate about his teaching and he made learning about it interesting. It's a lot of work between the lab section, studying for exams, homework assignments, poll everywhere questions, and the oyo project, but I still appreciated his teaching and I learned a lot. I'd recommend this to avoid chem or bio
I love Ben! His class is super fun and he is an amazing lecturer. The course is quite a lot of work with homework, in class questions, and the work for the lab, but I found it all super enjoyable. The lab is kind of a drag but idk what else you'd expect from a geology lab. I highly recommend you take Ben's class!!
Very good professor. He clearly knows what he's talking about and conveys that passion about geology to his students. He is accessible for office hours and he can help during those times if you have trouble. Poll Everywhere is easy, just pay attention. Do the readings and you should be fine. Tests are really easy with extra credit opportunity.
Ben is a very good professor but the class in general absolutely sucks, even though its probably still the easiest lab science. It's not difficult to get a good grade in this class even if STEM isn't your thing, but it's extremely time consuming.
Took this course w the lab, and was my most time consuming course this semester. Stay on top of the work, go to review sessions and office hours. Homework was the most difficult imo and he allows a 2 sided review paper for tests. Definitely had moments with lots of work but with proper time management, you should get a B minimum.
Ben is a really nice guy, you can tell. I took this class because I needed a lab science, and it was more work than I expected but not horrible nonetheless. The HW assignments are a bit lengthy/time consuming but start them early to prevent last-minute stress. Also, stick to what he says to study on HuskyCT for the exams, it helps a lot.
Professor Parks is very enthusiastic when it comes down to the environment and is very willing to help students grasp the concept of his class if they are struggling. The class is a bit on the harder side due to the multiple quizzes per week, homeworks, and exams. But because he is willing to help it makes the class doable.
Ben is an enthusiastic lecturer and he is always ready to answer questions. His office hours are very helpful and you should definitely go to them. The hardest part is the pre class quiz and the poll ev during lectures but you can easily look up the answers to those. The exams have cheat sheets and the final is just a project. #iloveben
Ben is a very good professor but be ready to read; he has us do little prep quizzes and reading before each class, but he goes over the material during the lectures. However, do not let that fool you; Professor Ben is very accessible, he responds to emails very fast, and you can schedule online meetings with him at any point during the semester.
Ben is probably my favorite professor. He is so caring. He explains everything so well. You need to be very diligent with your work in Erth1000E, there are "daily" homework but answers are on quizlet. In class are "quizzes" that will count towards your grade so you do need to show up. The coursebook/textbook is free as they made it themselves.
FAVORITE PROFESSOR EVER. You NEED to be ON TIME AND DILLGENT on your work as there is roughly a "daily" homework quiz before each new unit. (Most answers on Quizlet so didn't worry). His lecture slides are pretty "bare" so TAKE NOTES OF WHAT HE SAYS, then go back using lecture slides to make study guide. (Front/Back paper for midterm, 2 on finals).
He genuinely cares about your success I personally didn't take any notes for this class, but I did attend all the lectures Pay attention and do your work and trust me you'll be okay!
He cares so much about your success so please do not be afraid to approach him. For the first few weeks I could not understand what was happening, I saw people taking notes and I was so confused as to what we were supposed to be taking notes on. I talked to him and he told me to just listen to the lecture, best advice ever.
Great professor. Even if you are not a science person its an easy gen ed and and E course! Lecture slides are speaker heavy so pay attention along w/ some pop questions. Cheat Sheet on Exams. Final can be group project or exam. Only negative is "In-Class" activities every week which are easy but annoying. Lots of extra credit opportunities!
I think Ben was a good professor. You have to attend lecture to do well in his class, however he gives extra credit opportunities and the course content is not too hard after you understand it. I felt like he genuinely wanted me to succeed in his course
The final project was way more work than a final project for a gen ed should be. It required a million things but hopefully he will grade is on the easy side. And the midterm was not bad but harder than it should've been. I can tell he is very passionate and a decent professor so if he fixes those things I think he'd be a lot better.
A lot of homework for a typical gen ed. Most of it is easy it just takes a lot of time. For the final, you can either take an exam or do a group project. He also has quick questions he gives during lecture in which you have to answer for credit, meaning you have to go to class.
Ben's class is a lot of work, but his enthusiasm makes it enjoyable. The assignments can be time-consuming, but using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook and office hours helps manage the workload. With diligence, a solid grade is achievable.
This class was okay, kind of boring. We had to do polleverywhere questions every class and attendance isn't mandatory, but the questions are graded. The midterm was fair, we got to bring in a double sided cheat sheet and for the final you choose between doing a project or taking a test. This class is good to take to get the e credit over with.
void this prof. His personality's fine, but the class is a mess. Expect 65+ assignments with unclear grading, a 3-hour lab, and unfair participation polls. You'll rarely score high, and failure seems inevitable with 45-second quizzes on brand-new material. Class of 100+, no support. Take someone else.
He knows what he's talking about, but the class structure is terrible. Exams cover too much material with it being unclear what we're being tested on, weird or ambiguous grading on so many little assignments, and required attendance to answer polls on material we just learned. AVOID. Go take another lab science and stay away from this tedious mess.
Ben's strategy is so strange. He doesn't really motivate progressive learning. He overloads you with information then distributes a live quiz that you get like 2 minutes to complete. The labs are extremely tedious (one of them has you spend 1hr+ putting basic formulas into Excel), exams cover very random things, and homework is absurdly graded. No.
The class has way too much work for an introductory Geology class. He uses poll everywhere in every class, but you are allowed to miss 4 days in the semester. There is a lot of textbook reading to do before each class. Overall decent lecturer, but tons of work.
too much work (reading), very passionate abt material so he goes off on tangents, tests are unfair since they have too much material for a intro class, Ben is nice but not a good teacher, poll everywhere is annoying but only need 60% right to get full credit, 14 in class activities but only have to do 10, lab is sooo boring, choose final or project
You should not take this class lowkey bro if I am gonna keep it real. You gotta come to every class to do the Poll Ev questions, he will give you a in class assignment every class so you cant be missing those. His lectures are boring to be honest because we are talking about the earth and stuff. He's giving me the worst time of my semester rn.
AVOID AVOID AVOID I DO NOT KNOW HOW HE HAS SO MANY 5.0 REVIEWS. I am in good standing, attend every class, and complete every assignment on time, but this class and professor are an absolute joke. I look forward to the school-issued surveys, as his teaching methods need to be put in check. can not stress this enough: STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!!!
Just do not even try it waste of time. Take the course with a different professor; he will make you want to change your major if it is associated with any kind of earth sciences. All reviews stating he is wonderful are dated and not applicable to his popular or more populated courses.
Such a nice guy but bro does way too much. In class activities and polls every single class and two weekly prep quizzes. Lab portion is also excessive and they expect you to already have some knowledge on these topics but lets be real who does. This class will be the reason my gpa tanks.
Very straightforward course. Participation questions come directly from the slides he just talked about. Only need 60% right. 2 tries for easy quizzes; look up info if you want. Very fair exams. Study guides tell you exactly what you need. Exam reviews were helpful too. So much extra credit. Ones of my easiest A's. Ben's a great guy too.
Honestly, I really liked him and thought he was a good guy, then I met him for office hours and he was very rude and unprofessional.
Coming to lecture matters, but there are ample make-up opportunities. I thought he was a good professor, but we met for office hours and he was rude and unprofessional.
Pre-lecture quizzes, 2 Homeworks, class activities, class pollev questions, 2 midterms, Final exam/project. Can only miss few lectures. Accessible out of class but can make you feel dumb for asking questions when meeting with him in-person or over WebEx. Lab is fine w/ a good TA. Easiest lab course though, would recommend for non-science majors.
He made us do a whole report before doing our final project so that we could get feedback. We got no feedback, so we had no idea where to go from there. What a waste of my time. Ben genuinely enjoys making his course more difficult for his students, and is incredibly rude during office hours, like he hates his job even though he's a nepo baby.
Total joke of a professor and class. Spent two weeks on a project he pre-approved, then gave a poor grade with zero explanation. Has no idea what he wants from students. Avoid this course unless you want your GPA wrecked. Picks favorites in a 100+ person lecture. Don't waste your time wait for another prof or consider switching majors.
Class is all over the place. Lecture heavy, attendance is "mandatory" as he uses Poll-Ev for participation tracking. Two midterms with little info about what is on them. Can opt out of the final for a group project. Lab is fine except for the practical where you are tested on random info. Extra credit opportunities at the end of the sem if needed.
There are a lot of assignments which help with evening out your grade since everything isn't weighed as much. He's very passionate about his class and is super accommodating. As a non-STEM major, I actually looked forward to the lab each week; I lucked out and got lab partners that I got along with very well. 2 midterms + final exam or project.
He's a nice guy this class is just absolutely terrible if you're just taking it for the credit. Exams are difficult and the google earth assignments are terrible and you have to go to class to get the in class activities for points. Overall it is probably my least favorite class I've ever taken content and course work wise.
Nice guy but you can tell he's new to teaching b/c he cares too much about attendance and often looks stressed out. Live recording is always posted after class. He does put effort into physically teaching you on the whiteboard as opposed to just reading off slides- makes it 10x more interesting. Don't take 1050 if you're not interested in geology.
helppppppp
i never learned anything cuz we go too fast. literally most useless class ever. hes nice but assignments are stupid and dont buy the textbook its useless. the tas literally grade everything way too seriously. good luck i cant wait to get out of this class
overall a terrible class that is all over the place. in class work and poll ev questions EVERY SINGLE DAY. only worth one point and is so much work. google earth hw only worth such little of your grade yet you put so much effort into it. midterms are extremely difficult for no reason.
I'm not sure how people struggle in this class, yeah the material is a lot but you get a full cheat sheet, double sided for both exams and the final, can be a printed one too. Poll Evs every class but u can do them from home sometimes. Some stuff is tedious but if your looking for a lab credit and don't want to do anything else it plays
Chill dude, lectures are engaging and use a lot of real world examples. Attend class, skipping a lot of in class activities and pollEV questions brought my grade down a bit
I honestly don't get the bad reviews. It's not as much work as everyone says. Quizzes can be completed in like 20-30 minutes by skimming the text for the answers. The two homeworks each took me an hour to two tops, and you have SO MUCH TIME to do them. The midterms are a bit confusing though - they have the little details you don't often write down
The professor is a chill dude who genuinely cares about the topics he talks about. The class is also chill just 2 online quizzes a week with a few questions. the homework and ica are also light as long as you pay attention. Get a cheat sheet on all tests.
ben is literally evil. poll everywhere and in-class activities make it so you have to attend lecture. so many assignments and reading required to complete the pre-lecture quizzes. exams are impossible and he is such a tough grader when it came to the final GROUP PROJECT. he also definitely just makes his class hard for the sake of making it hard
