Explained all programming concepts completely, sometimes to exhaustion. Posts all lecture material and recordings of lectures online, so it's super convenient if you either need to review or need to miss a day. Attendance is not mandatory except for quiz/exam days - usually one per week.

Explains everything in great detail. Non-mandatory attendance to lectures. Weekly homework projects that can be completed the day before they're due if you understand the concepts well. Weekly quizzes, which are easy if you pay attention and do brief reviews of the course material.

Ben is a really great teacher, sucked I had him for an 8 week class. He was a good teacher but it's hard to learn computer science in 8 weeks for any teacher. Forced to go fast. He is so tech savvy, it's fun to watch him code.

You can really tell that Ben cares about his students and is willing to help! I accidentally came late to the midterm because of sleeping in (8 AM lecture) and he let me make up my time! I really wasn't expecting that gesture of kindness. Always extremely helpful when I come in for office hours.

Good guy, i think it was his first time teaching the class. Kind of a dork and a nerd, but it made the class and lectures more enjoyable. The only thing you have to do to do well in this class is just go to lecture and go to sectionals, and take notes every once in a while. By the end of the class you definitely feel like you learned something

Ben's a great professor. The topics he teaches are all straightforward and easy to understand from his power points and lectures. Even if you don't understand, there's always opportunities to meet with him and the section leaders outside of class. There's homework each week, but it's easily completed if you work on it throughout the week.

It's rare to see professors this good. Ben does a great job at giving you a strong foundation for computer programming. He does it clearly, he's always eager to hear questions, and his office hours are great for really brushing up on your understanding, coding homework, etc. The homework, and exams will be sometimes be challenging.

Ben isn't an engaging lecturer & since the class was held at 8am it was hard to will myself to go. Luckily attendance isn't mandatory & he posts/ records the lectures online so it is not a big deal to miss class. The assignments get very challenging as the course moves along & Ben doesn't teach you how to them, so they take lots of effort & time.

this was by far the most difficult class i had this semester but also the most enjoyable ben does a good job on explainin. things but this class is very tedious as the semester goes on hw assignments take anywhere from 6-8 hours to finish as time goes on and the pop quizzes will get you so show up to class .

The professor isnt too bad, he gets the info out there but Ihebdoesnt make sure everyone understands before moving on. The amount of work for this class is ridiculous. I would have to put off other assignments just to make sure I can finish some assignments for this class. The work only gets harder and hes always busy during office hours.

Ben's class is one of the better lecture type classes. You're always in a group working with other students to solve a problem and he usually will answer a question thoroughly. His TA's do all the grading which could be frustrating at times but an easy A.

Ben is overall a great professor and a really nice guy. This class proved to be quite difficult and the assignments and readings can become overwhelming at times. However, he does his best to make sure students are prepared for the exams and offers help with assignments whenever you're stuck.

Ben is one of the best professors I have had at the University of Arizona. He was very thorough in explaining concepts and getting students to follow along. When you had a question, he knew the answer easily. As long as you actually TRY in the class, you will do just fine. Study for the exams and start on the projects early.

The class is extremely difficult for beginners, it's hard to pass an exam and it's really difficult to get help due to the number of students in a class. The 8 am class is the worst and many students retake this class because the morning class is significantly harder than the evening class. If you are a beginner good luck because you have to grasp

Amazing. Lectures are clear, even if you're taking class in the morning; attending really helps. He's clear, and will happily help out in or outside of class. Teaching assistants help a lot, as well. The assignments are not too hard but you still need to put in the time for them by the second half of the semester.

He requires videos for credit in place of attendance in the online courses and his voice is unbearable!!!! He make a huge number of mistakes and asks you questions then is just as surprised by the answer as you are but you are getting a grade for his mistake and he is not. I am blown away by how rude and unwilling to help he was.

As hard as it gets for an introductory class. All my seniors I asked said HW were so hard for an intro class. Lots of classes activities which you would think are useful until you see the difficulty difference between it and the Homework. Grades harshly and doesn't accept any explanation.

Ben D is horrible. He uses way too many websites and some of the assignments requirements use horrible coding methods. There is no helping other students and if you need help, good luck. The way he and TA's grade is insane and will mark you off for every little thing. CS is not a good degree and he proves it isn't worth pursuing. Glad I withdrew.

I finish his class on last year, he is really good insturctor. I can't get it why the more and more new CS students feel bad on it. If students feel hard and bad on his class, I can said that " change the major". Because this people can not image how hard in CS 210 or higher. The Benj is only one instuctor who allow exchange exam grade in CS!

If you have programming experience you will do well. But if youre like me who never had any experience: Good luck. This class takes up all of my time and it just gets worse in 210 and above. The tests are extremely hard but he does drop one out of three. The lecture style is very different than other classes because he makes us do most of the work

If you have experience with coding you will do well. If not, you will have a tough time. For an introductory course it is extremely difficult and Ben does not seem to understand that. He acts as though we should know everything even though he does not explain things. Also the TA's at the student hours are useless. Don't bother going.

He is the best 110 teacher you can have, many students thought this class was hard as it is an intro class. If you know anything related to Cs, it will be easy for you, his lectures are easy to understand, uses gradescope for weekly assignment, has many TAs. You don't have to attend every class as PPTs are posted on his site, attendance graded. GG

Do not be fooled - this class requires a lot of time and patience but it pays off. I came in with no programming experience whatsoever and was able to get an A by just putting in the time. Ben will help you succeed if you allow him to. Great lectures, fun but challenging projects, great learning environment. A great intro to programming.

As a disclaimer, I came into this class with programming experience, specifically in C++, not Python. For me, the class wasn't too bad, but there are a lot of programming assignments. Luckily, Ben's assignment specs are very clear, and he answers questions online very quickly, Also, if you need more help, plenty of TAs are at your disposal.

Ben was a good professor, the class periods felt endless sometimes but if you participate you really do learn a lot. Go to office/TA hours if you need help. Ben's class overall felt disorganized. I had taken other first semester computer science courses in my senior year of highschool, so taking CSC110 with Ben was a severe disappointment. The class is gimmicky and doesn't value learning good code. It values memorizing syntax and nothing else. I love computer science, and Ben made me hate this class.

If anyone gives Ben a bad rating, they just weren't ready for Computer Science. Ben walks through each topic with an extreme level of detail. All the while, he will cover every question and corner case with a masterful understanding.

After taking CSC 120 with Russ, I truly miss Ben so much. He was such an amazing teach and actually cared about you. He wanted you to succeed and walked through every part of his lecture for the PAs. Oh, what I would do to have Ben as a teacher again.

If you dont know python and take his class, trust me, its nightmare. His class is super fast and unclear. He teach us like 1+1, but his pa (HW)like calculus. With a lot of homework. I used very interesting in python, but right now Im give up.

His class is "Jumping",which means week 7 we learned function,but next day we learned graph? so CSc 110 was the first time i've ever coded, and if you don't know Python (or coding in general), get ready to spend A LOT of time working on projects (weekly) & hw (3x a week). Get used to going to Office Hours and asking questions to TAs because you will be confused. Good teacher, but if you have a stacked schedule, good luck. 1 test dropped.

Overall if youre planing to take csc110, dont take it with a heavy schedule. You will have 2 weekly programing assignment, and some of them will suck up your time. He is a good professor, he cares about the students. His test are not that bad, and 10% of the course is on the attendance. The course is manageable if you work hard.

Loved Ben! He is a gem in the CS department. The biggest reason why 110 is hard is because many taking it have never coded before. There were two programming assignments per week and he/the TAs were very approachable. Lectures were fabulous and assignments were connected to lecture material. I wasn't a fan of the group exams though.

FOR ALL upcoming CSC 110 non-CS major students, I am warning you that this course will be one of the HARDEST if you don't have any prior knowledge in CS languages. The difficulty level of the course starts linearly but then grows exponentially by the 2nd week itself. Gives a ton of homework and lot of progamming assignments . The exams are tough !

WHAT AN AMAZING PROFESSOR!!! However, a warning. If you have never programmed before, get ready to REALLY struggle. I taught myself a little bit of Python beforehand (as well as some other languages), and I breezed through this class, but I'm aware that students with zero experience haven't been as lucky. Otherwise, excellent class!!!

All you have to do is stay on top of your work and make an effort to keep up with the course. The work load seems like a lot at first but it helps you improve quickly. There is a lot of homework (2 coding assignments per week) but as long as you're engaged and actively participating, understanding the content can be easy. You work in groups, but very little is graded group wise (except a portion of exams). Exams are on paper, which can be frustrating, but they aren't hard. Ben is amazing, and I 10/10 recommend.

It's better to have some programming experience before you take this class, or you'll really need to struggle with the programming assignments. Even if you have, you might still struggle. Suggestion: make good use of Piazza and attend your TA's office hours! Also be careful with the word usage & punctuation mark traps in the exams.

He never answered emails in time, or wouldn't answer in general. Constantly canceled office hours, and would even schedule one-on-one meetings and never show up with zero notice. Everything is misspelled and very poorly explained in exams, homework specs, everything. The exam study guides are actually the worst.

The people who are complaining about him are clearly not going to the 15 easily accessible TA team who have helped me many times. Take this class and talk to the TA's for faster response

This class is a lot of work, but all the assignments are very helpful in learning to effectively apply the concepts and write good code. The lecture videos and textbook are where you get the majority of your information, while actual class periods focus on practice problems and are optional. I would recommend this class if you have a light schedule

This was a great class and so is Ben as a teacher. There are 1-2 programming assignments a week that become pretty difficult later on in the course, but if you manage your time it should be fine. If you don't plan ahead, plan to be stressed out at the last minute.

Ben is a great prof. Go to office hours & use piazza if you need help. TAs are mostly really nice. Start short & long PAs early, manage your time or they'll give you hell. Once you get past the first test, the tests are easy and structure is consistent. I personally loved the study guides. If you put time & effort into this class, you'll be good.

Ben is a really nice teacher. There are lots of office hours with TAs, so if you're stuck on the program, use the office hours. The programs are graded by TAs but you can always request a regrade, which will be reviewed by Ben. Definitely recommend taking his class.

This class is toughly graded as style really matters in the PA assignments. However, there is plenty of extra credit so that makes up for it. Ben is a really nice guy and the TAs are great. As long as you do the PA assignments, you should be prepared for the exams as well. This class was great as an intro to Computer Science class!

the people complaining probably procrastinated and never went to office hours. Ben is a nice guy, but the class being online and him not teaching a single thing in the zoom hour left me baffled. You're left to recorded lectures and slides, which in turn makes the class much harder than it should be. Ben is the only professor since the pandemic started that doesn't teach a thing on zoom. This class is a joke. Ben doesn't teach ANYTHING in class (zoom), has recorded lectures for you to watch. Doesn't equip you with the proper knowledge to get programming assignments done. I took this class online and the zoom sessions were optional, basically work sessions with TA's and peers, but are essential to do well overall. Record lectures with embedded quizzes long but more than doable, exams pretty reasonable, Ben and TA's extremely nice and helpful. Readings and class are optional. You can retake video quizzes on recorded lectures indefinitely. Small problems due before each class, long assignments every week or two. Everything is fine if you don't procrastinate, lots of help available, and tons of ec too. The tests are tougher but doable. Had no prior experience. Just space out your workload.

Prof. Ben is a really good prof, but his homework are difficult and as well as the exams. He cares about his student and the way he teaches. The TA that I was assigned for was really bad. She thinks that she is the prof instead of Ben. She is a really tough grader, and you need to be exactly perfect on your code style. Get ready for the hard work.

If you are thinking of taking this class during the summer, PLEASE DON'T. Unless you have quite literally nothing else going on in your life you are going to be insanely stressed at all times trying to catch up in this course. All the material is badly crammed and Ben is the worst professor I've ever had. He does not care a single bit about anyone.

He explains technical details in Python quite well. Read the textbook before watching his lecture videos (though I've gotten away without that). Projects can be intimidating; use OH and Piazza. The style guides are there to help you write clean code - you'll get used to it over time.

This professor cares about his students learning. The lectures along with a small amount of textbook reading in CSC110 is a great introduction to computer science. Ben is always open for questions and office hours are always offered if you need help. This course was by far my favorite lecture. Professor will crack jokes as well.

He seems to care more about promoting his youtube channel than teaching his class to the students taking it which leaves him puzzled when so many people struggle to pass the class and instead of offering some help just tells them go to an already overcrowded office hours with little chance of getting the help that you need

Great in-person lecturer, but has no regard for the wellbeing of individual students. The work load was very intensive for a 300 level course. As far as COVID goes, masks apparently don't matter despite being mandated, and recorded lectures aren't a thing either.

While Ben is a really nice person and knows what he is talking about, he is not suited for an introductory class like CSC 110. He does not prepare students with the skills necessary to complete the PAs by themselves, he encourages us to go to Office Hours or ask on Piazza but this shouldn't be an issue if PAs where made accordingly to out knowledge

I had a mixed experience in his class. I did well on prep problems and short assignments, but regular assignments were a toss-up between As and Ds. Beware: he docks major points and looks down on anyone who reads his book outside his exact assigned readings. Rely heavily on the TAs, they're here for you.

I loved this class, the textbook is cheap, in-class lectures are interactive, online resources are plentiful (TAs and Piazza), and the physical classroom is great with at least a dozen TVs and new furniture. The class is a lot of work as a 4 credit fundamental introduction to comp sci, but every resource is provided for your success.

I dont think Ben was a bad professor at all, very nice gay. I never knew anything about coding prior, so one thing I can say is topic go by super fast. You learn a new topic everyday and dont have much time to catch up if youre behind at all. Advice: go to lectures, pay attention and start your assignments early. He does give exc, take advantage

Since the class is so huge, most 1-on-1 help you'll get is from his TA's. For teaching a class of 200+ at the same time, he does a good job making his slides easy to understand, at least most of the time. You gotta do a lot of tougher projects, but there is EC if you miss or mess up a couple of them. Do not expect this class to be a pushover.

Wings every lectures, does not proof read his assignments (always last minute), and never gives any well written preparatory work like PPT's and such. In this semester Russ taught for 3 weeks and that was the only time I was learning where I wasn't just teaching myself. Terrible. Instructors need to have consequences for being terrible.

PAs were pretty easy, but didn't cover some important topics. Tests were brutal but open book, would definitely recommend getting the textbooks. Pop quizzes force you to attend every lecture, even though they're recorded. Ben did a pretty good job overall of explaining the concepts in this course, especially with a newborn baby.

Ben does not know how to teach an introductory course. Anyone without prior knowledge to this coding should avoid him at all costs. All he does is read off power points and cares more about syntax knowledge than actual knowledge of coding. Assignments more often than not require something that you have to teach yourself rather than something taught

I am pretty much a beginner at python and Ben does an amazing job teaching python and actually explaining the information in a simple manner. He is my favorie coding teacher by far and I recommend anyone take him, even if you suck at coding. Bens lectures are the best. Time goes by so quickly in this class and he keeps class time interesting by encouraging group work and playing upbeat music during work time. The coding assignments have awesome specs and he often walks you through each main step to write your code.

Learning a new programming language is not easy but Ben's activities and project assignments are really good introductions to the concepts you learn that week. As far as grading goes it depends on what TA you have, some of them can be really strict on grading but as long as you follow the formatting guide you can request regrades.

If you are required to take intro to python, I would highly recommend you take it with Ben! I had no programming knowledge before this class, and it was hard, but he does a very good job at teaching and explaining content. Lots of examples in class. I came into this class with no python experience, but I learned so much from this class and he gave good lectures. There were some difficult programming assignments, but there were also a lot of office hours available which was very helpful. The lowest exam is also dropped, and there is some extra credit.

Great professor who is perfect for the beginner course. He really explains concepts well with fun examples and collaborative classroom environments. The programming assignments were pretty rough and take hours to complete with the help of peers, so don't slack on them and make sure to use the resources provided (especially TA office hours).

Clear lectures with great examples. Like all CS classes, start PAs early. Attending lectures would be necessary even without the pop quizzes (lecture materials are not fully available outside class). Buy textbooks if only for the open-book exams (and scan the index for a quick search). Keep up on class Discord to avoid mistakes others make.

This class is a nightmare to get through unless you know web programming prior to taking it. The prof skims over the in-class examples but does not provide them out side of class nor lecture recordings. There are one to two PAs every week, and this class will demand a lot of your time. Office hours are a must to succeed.

This course was honestly a refreshingly easy course in comparison to some of the other ones in the 300-level. The only challenges were actually understanding how bash commands worked. We were given some tools but were left to explore using man-pages that were terrible. The PA's were not terrible once you understood C, but bash commands hard.

This was one of my favorite classes at the U of A. Ben takes you from knowing zero web development to understanding all the technologies in the MERN stack.
