if this is not a requirement do not take this class! he is very hard, you hardly learn anything, and the amount of reading is ridiculous! DONT TAKE THIS
Intelligent and knowledgeable, but just not a very good professor for a large intro lecture class. Assignments are very vague and very harshly graded (by TA's, but according to his ridiculous standards). Gives minimal help in preparing for exams. If you must take HIST 038, take another professor if at all possible!
Hopkins is clearly very knowledgeable about this subject. However, he is a bit of a tool. Very vague when answering questions, whether they relate to the lecture topic or upcoming exams/papers. I learned a lot and found it interesting, but he's definitely not my favorite professor...you could do worse, but you could definately do better.
Do not take this class unless required! If so take from another professor. His lectures are not good, so much reading and very tough/strict grading. He does not help at all with the midterm, 400 years of world history and no guidelines of what to study with a total of 5 questions. Could be good in a small class but do not take HIST 38 from him.
This is definitely a very tough class. If you want an easy A, take this class from another professor. That said, his lectures are extremely loaded with information and he structures them pretty well. He has a very tough grading rubric for the papers. The midterm had very few questions with the essay taking up 60 points of the midterm.
Hopkins is a great lecturer! He is very engaged in History and is very knowledgeable about the subject. Only grades are 2 papers midterm final and participation. Midterm was REALLY easy! Lots of material, but questions were very broad. Papers were graded a bit harder, you're pretty much at the mercy of your TA. I had Holly who was pretty easy.
Not the hardest of classes, but Professor Hopkins can be difficult to deal with. He doesn't give any guidance of what's expected of you but just expects you to know. While he's very intelligent he comes off as arrogant and even does note checks which is pretty unheard of.
He can be somewhat eccentric and seem eccentric, but he knows what he's talking about. His lectures are always engaging. There is a lot of reading, but the tests and papers are pretty easy.
This professor grows on you as the class progresses. I wasn't a huge fan in the beginning, but very much enjoyed the class by the end. A lot of reading, and he is vague when answering questions about tests/papers, but not an extremely difficult grader (that mostly falls on TA's). 500 years of world history is difficult by anyone's standards.
This class involved a ton of reading and non-stop note-taking for two and a half hours a week, but Prof Hopkins is engaging as a lecturer and made the subject much more interesting to me than I expected. It is a tough, time consuming class, but you will learn a lot from it if you do the reading and go to the lectures.
Good guy and interesting material but incredibly biased toward his focused subject. If you are interested in European empires, i suggest you find another class. He grades everything super hard and rarely helps. Best of luck
Hopkins is EXCELLENT. I knew from day 1 that I would love the class. It's structured in a way that lets you dig deep into the major events of history from 1500, without having to sit and memorize dry facts and dates. Very engaging class & forces you to think. I learned a lot and can't recommend Hopkins enough! I'm so thankful. Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!
Addresses history from a conceptual, thematic and theoretical perspective.Effectively encapsulating 500 years of events within this synthesis of revisionist history. The papers and exams leave room for exposing your strengths and interests within the class.
Great Professor - Engaging, Enthusiastic. It took me a while to really appreciate this class, but you will learn a LOT. Put the work in, and you will get the grade you deserve -- Get readings done ahead of time because while there are many, staying on top of the work definitely pays off.
Correction on Last Rating -- 3/5 on a scale of Difficulty (5 being the hardest)
A miserable teacher. A decent lecturer, but assigns tons of reading and several movies, and the grading is way too tough. Acts like an intellectual, but he's just an idiot (the British had a crisis of "consciousness" in the 1780s?). Provides no clues about what material will be on tests (despite repeated pleas from the students). Avoid if you can.
Professor Hopkins is one of my favorite professors ever! He is extremely knowledgeable and is a GREAT lecturer. His lectures are very engaging and funny, and really worth going to. He encourages visiting him in office hours where he is very helpful and just generally a cool guy to talk to.
I hate history, and I loved this course! I had a personal issue in the middle of this class and he completely let me get an extension and helped me out. His lectures are interesting and he doesn't layer his lectures like "Blah blah happened in 1957 after the blah war with blah people dying blah". If you take the time to pay attention you'll do fine
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. so much reading and the professor is not helpful. he doesnt want to make it easier for you to study. his lectures are interesting and require you to pay close attention and take good notes.. dont take it if its not a GCR
Prof Hopkins is a mediocre professor - the tests are easy enough, but he assigns a very large amount of readings every week - and they're very boring. The lectures were pretty boring too - but I guess he tries to make them somewhat engaging. Overall, an okay course - there are definitely worse professors at GW.
He's the most comprehensible teacher I've ever encountered. I HATE history, but he made me really appreciate the class and didn't just teach American history. Funny and sarcastic, makes lectures easy. The papers are difficult, but people who slam him are only being mean because they didn't do any research on the topic. My friends all love him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I had a high GPA until I took this class! Lowest grade I've ever received and this was an intro course! TA Natalie was horrible! He talks aimlessly, exams are unfair, avoid!!!!!!!!
I don't know what you are talking about because Natalie was an amazing TA. She was a very fair grader and she helped us sift through Hopkins' dense lectures. And Hopkins grew on me throughout the semester. You may not appreciate how dense his lectures are but throughout the year you'll begin to appreciate how much you really learn.
I took both his 35 and his indian history course, crazy guy. Brilliant. You learn a lot but you read a lot. If you love history, take a hopkins class.
Brilliant man. He is a fantastic lecturer, and keeps you engaged on topic material that otherwise would be really boring. Always offers help, even though I never went to office hours. Lost of reading but you can get a decent grade in the class if you just take good notes on lecture.
He, in addition to being a gorgeous man who is slightly obsessed with his Argentine wife and the phrase "as it were", is brilliant and helpful. Go to his office hours for papers and exam questions, and always make friends with your TA! He may go off on tangents and can't work his projector, but the man knows his stuff and looks fine teaching it.
Great lecturer, really interesting. He does go more philosophical on some subjects, but he knows his stuff. A lot of reading is involved and he is vague on tests, but just keep up and you'll be okay. Papers twice a semester are straightfoward. Take this class.
Hopkins is a great lecturer. He is very clear in his presentations and has a huge interest in different perspectives and themes throughout history. The only con is he goes through lectures quickly and there is a ton of reading.
Hopkins is a great lecturer. He is very clear in his presentations and has a huge interest in different perspectives and themes throughout history. The only con is he goes through lectures quickly and there is a ton of reading.
Prof. Hopkins is a really great lecturer and is always clear on whatever he's talking about. He knows what he's teaching and offers a lot of insight and background, which can be used to bolster exam essays and papers and keeps the class interesting. I did okay just skimming the textbooks.
I dont get how some people think he is hot, because he is absolutely not even close to being hot. The lectures are super boring. I've fell asleep numerous times in that class. He tries to be funny, but fails. The grade in this class depends on the TA. So if you get a hard grader as TA, then you basically fail the class.
World history lecture was exactly as a freshman lecture was... watch out on the final he'll put questions that a minority of people showed up for on a specific lecture day. Otherwise good professor.
Prof. Hopkin made world history entrancing!Best history course I've taken at the GW (to clarify, I took World Hist). He is extremely clear in his lectures and his tests fairly test you on what he talked about.I advise going to his office hours for anything; he's very helpful and approachable.Lots of reading but manageable if you stay w/ the syllabus
First thing he said to the class: "My name is Professor Hopkins and I graduated from Oxford. You may have heard of it." That's when I stopped paying attention.
Great intro class with relatively easy material. Lots of reading, but you can get away with it if you pay attention in class. Focus on key terms that aren't at the end of the slides, but words he repeats a lot. Get Nick as your TA, he's amazing. The finals aren't hard, but it's better to study to be safe.
Hopkins is a pretty decent history teacher. He takes globalization viewpoint in his lectures, and those are usually quite clear. He puts humor in sometimes as well. Grading is mostly up to if you get a nice TA or not. He covers a lot in his lectures, so don't miss those as much as possible. He is very clear on what is on his tests, too.
His textbook selections are by far the most boring possible books ever, written in the most elaborate way possible! He is very boring but as many have stated, it all depends on the TA you get if all you are worried about is the grade! I would go with Kennedy as a History professor instead though!
Hopkins is a great professor, though the difficulty of the class really depends on your TA. He keeps his lectures interesting with humor and he really focuses on "non-Western" history. I would highly recommend taking this class!
Professor was extremely knowledgeable about the subject (History of South Asia 1750-Present). His papers were challenging as were his readings but they were definitely worth it. He is surprisingly funny as well. But actually do the readings or you'll look stupid when you don't know what a zamindar is two weeks into class...
Professor Hopkins is incredibly knowledgeable regarding the subject matter. He outlines his lectures very clearly, explaining the structure of the lecture at both the beginning and the end of every lecture and recaps every lecture in the next lecture. There is a TON of reading so keep up . It is an easy A if you do the readings
Hopkins is a very colorful lecturer. He loves the F word and his humor made the long lectures interesting. You'll take copious hand-written notes. There is a MAJOR amount of reading. MAJOR. And unfortunately it's key to succeeding. Two papers, midterm, and final are only grades. Very strict grader for essays and midterm. Pretty difficult class
Your grade in the class depends on your TA. LOTS OF READINGS and high expectations that you read and keep up with everything. Funny lecturer, keeps the class engaged.
What a difficult class for a freshman level. This professor is knowledgeable, but I have no respect for him. The TA's expect you to be on top of your game and to have done the massive amounts of reading. Steer clear of this class, not much wiggle room for improvement if you tank one paper.
Really organized lectures, great speaker
Hopkins was an incredible lecturer, intelligent, sarcastic, engaging, knows his stuff. Class is graded pretty harshly, but you learn a lot. You'll have to put in time to get the A, but it's not impossible and lectures are actually entertaining.
If you get into his big lecture class where you have T.A's grading your paper your fine. If you get into his small class where he grades your paper, you can kiss your grades goodbye. I have never gotten below an 85% on a college paper until I took his class on world history. He does make lectures interesting though, that's the only good thing.
YOU WILL WRITE AND READ SO MUCH AND THERE IS NO CLEAR IDEA ON WHAT YOU WILL BE TESTED.
Hopkins is a great teacher, he is always willing to help out especially one on one. He is a very tough grader, and if you don't show up to class you won't pass.
Prof Hopkins is a genius and is passionate about history, and it comes through in his lectures. He is extremely organized and makes the 75 minute lecture interesting and engaging. It's very writing and reading intensive for an intro course, but he made me love history and I looked forward to every class. He wants his students to do well.
I have never had such a radical transformation with a professor before. Hopkins truly is a teacher in the sense that he will rip your work apart, but give you the tools necessary to recover and significantly improve as a result. If you want to learn, take his class. Steer clear if you want an easy A.
Grades papers and exams (which are all essay based) harder than my English professor which is unnecessary since this is an intro class. Really knows his stuff though and loves to spread the knowledge. Cool guy who will always help in office hours. Slow getting papers back. Most of the time you can read the Wiki for the movies. Skim the Darwin WELL.
He curses and yells in lectures to make the content more interesting. He's super passionate about history. Specializes in South Asian history. Intelligent, amazing at lecturing, super nice and understanding. He's a pretty hard grader for some things, but it's worth taking HIST 1011 with him!
Lectures are informative, interesting & hes very passionate about his history. BUT readings are AWFUL, over a hundred pages+ a week; they're confusing & hard to understand if you arent a phD from oxford. Papers are difficult, & have headache inducing prompts. It was challenging, but was also so stressful I wish I had taken it with another prof.
If you're not looking for a challenge in HIST1011, avoid this class. He's a fantastic lecturer and you will learn a lot in this class, but he assigns an ungodly amount of reading. Like, consistently upwards of 100 pages of dense reading every week. You actually need to both do the reading and attend lectures to do well. Good class, but very hard.
Professor Hopkins is a great guy with a great passion for history. You have to do a lot of reading, and watch a couple of films but the course load is not that bad. He does give tough writing prompts though. However these prompts are given a long time before the due date so you have ample time to prepare. Loved this class! Would take it again!
Professor Hopkins is AWESOME! As an IA major, I was seriously dreading the freshman requirements but I was so wrong! Lectures are interesting and he takes breaks to make the lecture seem shorter. Does not allow laptops, and papers are designed to teach, not get you an A. I worked my butt off for my grade, but the class was worth it!
Professor Hopkins is very passionate and gives some of the best lectures I have ever had. His tests are not difficult if you take good notes and do the readings, which are not unreasonable. He is very engaging and actually makes you want to go to his class, I can honestly say that I will try and take more classes from him in the future.
Professor Benjamin Hopkins, wants his students to get c's. He very clearly states that giving bad grades doesn't matter to him. He gives tons of readings which are difficult to comprehend and his lectures are boring , dull and dry. He takes attendance and doesn't not spare a single absent.
This class was disappointing and discouraging. The lectures are fine if you can ignore the condescending overtones; the assignments are time-consuming, frustrating, and harshly graded; the readings are miserably dull and convoluted. I do not recommend this professor, not even to history lovers. The professor is too arrogant and pretentious.
This professor is incredibly rude. His classes are interesting sometimes but he delivers his lectures so arrogantly that overall this has been a miserable experience. The condescension is TOO MUCH. Also his jokes are not funny. Sorry, saying bad words in lecture doesn't make you cool. I like history but he ruined it for me this semester.
If you have no prior knowledge in India this class can be INCREDIBLY difficult. He's a really good lecturer - very organized and divides every lecture into 3 parts. Also it's super super interesting stuff but SOOOO much work (he teaches this like a grad course and there were some grad students in my class). hardest class ive taken but learned a lot
Don't take this class if you don't have to. It's a TON of work and if you aren't an international affairs major, it's just not worth your time. Overall, the professor gives good lectures and is a likable person, but if you don't have solid background knowledge in the subject, you will struggle.
If you not interested in history or not an IA major, I would avoid Hopkins at all cost. Took this to fulfill a GPAC and going to hurt my GPA. He is extremely interesting, but gives ridiculous amounts of readings and has unreal expectations.
After taking two classes of his, I think he is one of the best professors at GW. His lectures are coherent&concise, his grading criteria clear, and is always available to meet during office hours. His class is difficult but if you study strategically without burdening yourself with all readings you will be fine. Make sure to attend all lectures!!!
While the course content is very interesting, the professor's expectations in papers and exams are extremely unrealistic. If you can't read his mind and predict the exact response he is looking for, you will automatically get points docked. I understand that a free A is nonexistent, but in this case, maximum effort returns little reward.
Professor Hopkins was my best class this semester. He gives thoughtful and organized lectures. The reading is not always necessary if you attend class. He truly cares about your success, so if you have concerns do not be worried to ask for help.
If you're very interested in South Asia his class is a must. Lots of reading, really tough grading on essays, and going to lectures is important, but really worth it. Also really hard to get an A--the way he weights grades makes it so that you have to do well on everything to get an A. You NEED to go to office hours if you want to do well.
Hopkins's lectures are really the backbone of the class - skipping them will make your life harder, because there's really no other way to get the material. If you go to class and take good notes, the exams aren't particularly hard. He's a great speaker and makes class interesting, and tries hard not to be eurocentric.
hopkins is my favourite professor at gw. so so so knowledgeable and loves what he does. a passionate professor, i would take him again in a heartbeat. really accessible inside and outside of class, i recommend seeing him a handful of times throughout the semester. cares about his students, not the grade, so grading is definitely tough.
I found a new love for history because of Professor Hopkins. He is very knowledgable and accessible. Go to his office hours and discuss your paper ideas, lecture questions and anything else. He genuinely cares about his students. He has very little influence over your final grade as the TAs do all of the grading
Hopkins is the kind of guy that swears during class and does everything he can to keep the class engaged. Grades were based on two major papers, two short response papers, the midterm, and the final. You'll be okay as long as you show up to lectures, otherwise you probably won't pass. The readings are useless without the context of the lectures.
Hopkins is okay. Grade is based off of exams and papers. If you do the readings and go to lecture, you'll do fine. The problem with Hopkins is that his lectures and the readings are incredibly dry. He's very nice one-on-one however and encourages his students to reach out for help when needed. His powerpoints only contain photos so beware.
An all around funny professor. Prof. Hopkins is a great lecturer and if you take detailed notes and read a little bit of the textbook you will be fine and get a good grade, I got an -A. For discussion section it is key to get a goodTA and read the globalization essays. All around interesting and great course. Highly recommend to freshmen.
Amazing professor and great lecturer. All you have to day is attend class and go to discussion sections, take notes, and read a couple of essays from the globalization textbook and you will do well. However, make sure that you get a good T.A, Zayard was very good.
Decently tough class, grade very much dependent on your TA. Hopkins is a pretty good lecturer and makes the content interesting. Exams weren't especially difficult (IDs and essays) and there were a few papers grades differed enormously depending on your TA. Overall, good prof for the intro HIST class.
If you have a TA named Rohail, drop the class. The TA was no help at all. He proceeded to tell us how he got a 2.2 GPA as a History Major in college, but still pursued history. Also, he failed almost everyone for the first midterm. The TAs are incredibly harsh and Hopkins sticks by his TA wholeheartedly even though they are far from the best.
Horrible class. Hopefully he doesn't taint future students with his disorganized lectures.
The class was very organised, and my TA (Rohail) was very helpful when it came to understanding the readings, because he discussed everything in his discussion section and linked the lecture and readings. The TAs are tough graders, but they provide constructive feedback, and are happy to answer last minute questions as well, which was super nice.
If you're a Freshman studying IA, TAKE HIS CLASS!! If you learn from an enthusiastic professor who actually cares that you learn - Prof. Hopkins is your guy for Freshman WH. He structures his lectures in such a way that is super easy to follow and is just very interesting.
If you are an IA major, everything he says in this class will be put in a way that it is applicable in some way. I honestly don't see why so many people thought assignments were hard, 2 papers, midterm, final, and 2 shorter (super easy) papers. I had Rohail and I thought he was very smart and a good TA, he brings cookies. Just fricken read!
I really enjoyed Professor Hopkins. I'm a big history buff and he definitely was able to teach me new things in a subject I often research on my own. My TA, Rohail, was a tough grader but I think his overall pleasantness helped dull the disappointment. Reading is really important for this class, but if you like history I think it's worth your time.
Professor Hopkins makes taking gen eds worth it. He is very knowledgeable about world history and is a scholar on South Asia. Super chill professor and is willing to help you if you're struggling. You have to work for the class, there are a lot of readings and papers are graded pretty harshly. TAs make or break the class for sure
Hopkins is great, ignore the complaints from bitter students. Lectures are the basis for exams/papers, but if you want to do well in this class, just do the damn readings. Hopkins is personable and keeps even the most mundane content interesting. Adam was an excellent TA and a very fair grader. Try to enroll in his discussion section if you can.
Professor Hopkins lectured a lot and didn't always seem very interested in some of his own lectures. Generally he was engaged, but he also repeated himself sometimes and used the word "proverbially" a lot (seriously, if you take his class, you'll hear that word 3-4 times per class). He's a nice guy, though, and he was willing to answer questions.
Grade largely depends on TA and how they grade your papers, but the professor is great. You don't really need the textbook if you pay attention in lecture, but the primary source document compilation is a great read.
Be nice to your TA and participate in discussions, your grade depends on it! Course split into a midterm, 2 papers, and a final. It's reading heavy, but as long as you keep up you'll be fine. Hopkins is a quirky guy and his lectures are straightforward. If you need to take World History take it with Hopkins!
Hopkins is clearly incredibly intelligent and passionate about history. Specifically South Asia (India). But he expects to much of his students, and hold them to an unrealistically high standard of knowledge and passion for the subject. He is a very tough grader . Overall take this class only if you don't care about your GPA and getting an A.
Love Dr. Hopkins. He really cares for his students and gives them all the time they need. Having said this, he also assigns more readings than most GW professors, and really expects quality work. He is amazing, you learn a lot, but also work a lot.
Professor Hopkins, while knowledgeable on the region of South Asia, provides a very narrow insight into the history leading up to its modern politics, focusing mostly on the imperial perspective and relying on a distasteful "Partition Trial" exercise to teach students about the partition of India in 1947. He expects an unrealistic level of reading.
do not take this for your GPAC, it's hard but I loved this class, I found all the lectures interesting and the discussion really easy, I would have done better if I did the reading (i didn't). I found him engaging and funny and very knowledgeable. there were 2 short response papers, 2 long essays, and a midterm and a final which were difficult
here's the grading breakdown: two 5-7pg papers worth 20% each, two 3-5 pg papers worth 5% each, and the midterm/final are 20% each. the final isn't cumulative, only what's taught after the midterm. i never went to lectures (although they're posted online), never read, and did assignments the night before. ended with a c so no complaints
Great professor, but tough grader. Very knowledgable. Willing to help if you reach out. Do not take this course unless necessary. Worked hard for grade. 2 research and 2 opinion essays, midterm and final essay-based. Lots of reading. No tech allowed in class and lecture recordings unavailable. TA's are a big help and grade based on his standards.
Amazing but dense lectures, genuinely learned so much and always enjoyed joining. Pretty tough and demanding essay assignments but made me a better writer and had an awesome TA + discussion section.
My goat. very interesting, but some lectures can be kinda boring, like why do I need to know about wheat production in the Ottoman Empire. #boring however some lectures I'm very fascinated. His tests are actually pretty simple, and the questions 100% stem from the discussion. JUST TAKE GOOD NOTES, WATCH MOVIES, AND PARTICIPATE IN DISCUSSIONS!
Made assignments harder than they need to be. By all means avoid. No clarity whatsoever on what's expected on midterm/final.
His lectures were interesting but the assignments were difficult and the grading is tough. If you care about your grade, take another history class (if this isn't required).
He's good at giving lectures but does not prepare you well at all for the real deal exams. It would have been nice to have ample essay practice beforehand.
Not an easy class.
His lectures were fun! While the work was rigorous, it taught me a lot.
Professor Hopkins was a good lecturer, but didn't prepare us at all for the midterm or final, with no study guide, making it difficult to study. There are lots of papers but helps to improve writing and evens out the grade. Had a good TA too!
Prof Hopkins is very knowledgable, keeps lectures interesting, and is always excited for questions. The grading is reliant on the TA you get which can be a hit or miss. He has a good amount of papers which can balance the grade but there's lots of readings and essay questions can sometimes seems to not be related to the key themes/reading specific.
he was not understanding at all. the class is very lecture heavy (and boring) so get ready for that. it was very skipable
Professor Hopkins was great and is very passionate about history. This class heavily relied on the lectures and the readings. He doesn't record the lectures, so you either have to look at the slides or ask a friend what happened in class because you might be tested on something he said. The readings are also lengthy, so learn how to skim.
I rarely write reviews for professors, as I believe most who leave reviews are just complainers; however, Hopkins is an exception. If you're not lazy and want to learn a fascinating, non-Western focus on history from 1500 to the present, take his class. Yes, he sometimes loudly swears in class, but he'll always be the GOAT. U will also learn writin
Just go to lecture. Entertaining, enthusiastic. Low exam averages (70s) but there's 4 essays to make it up. He records the lectures, just email him and he'll post the one you missed. I didn't really read at all (didn't even buy the book), just paid attention to the articles that were mentioned most and know the main point for exams.
IF YOURE TAKING HIST 1011 TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!
He's very passionate and course structure is a great introduction to history. Lecture is informative and provides more info from the readings, brings guest/TA lectures, but he's a bit picky on tech usage in class. Discussion can be helpful and is part of your grade. Textbook is helpful but not super necessary if you go to lecture and get the gist.
I LOVED this professor! Learned a lot of interesting facts about history, that I otherwise would have not known. Not a super hard class as long as you pay attention in lecture and take the assignments seriously. However, I had friends whose TA's were bad, so be weary.
