He makes class fun and he is very patient in helping you understand your assignments
Great teacher, teaches well and is not strict.
Best english teacher I've ever had. He's a laid back and interesting guy with a lot to offer, I definitely reccommend him.
Ben is great! He's a fun teacher and he's very easy to get along with :) Definitely recommend him!
I am still currently in his English 101 class, and I love this guy! I am in his online class, and he responds to any questions you have via e-mail. I like the variety of selections he gives for topics. I recommend him for anyone taking English 101, I wish he was teaching other classes, would love to have him again!!
Ben is the man. super interesting topics, challenging assignments, easy going approach. Your writing will improve in this class, you will have fun in this class and... ben is the man! One of my favorite teachers.
very wonderful job
Mr. Ben JOHNSON. He's a pretty cool guy and he's actually really funny! His essay assignments actually make you think, so it was challenging, but he grades pretty easy! Great class, loved the guy!
Pretty awesome teacher...
Great teacher, easy class, and kind of nerdy cute... Is married with kid though. Fun to look @ though! ;)
Mr. Ben is a great teacher!! his assignments are pretty challenging, but he grades fair, and easy. he cares about his students!
I went into his English 101 class with just the knowledge of what my friend had told me about him the quarter before. He is really fun and we do get work done and I learned alot about writing good essays. Pretty easy but don't get behind because it will be hard to catch up.
Let me start by saying i could absolutly not write before i started his class, He works with you and gives examples of what he expects. Very Fair grader. I learned to organize and more clearly explain what i meant. And if you take a draft to him he will look it over and give you ideas. Take HIm for both english...DO IT Sign up NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The only down fall is that he doesnt give claification on what he wants in the essaya
Awesome teacher!! He grades fairly and tells will explain anything as long as you ask! Is always willing to help you with essays and you have the opportunity to turn in rough drafts early and he will read them and suggest things before the papers are due. Gives enough time for each paper and is really helpful! Best 101 teacher by far!!
He claimed he would work with you if you had emergency situations and needed to miss class, but in my case he NEVER returned any emails. He has a rule that if you miss 1 assignment or miss 3 class days you get a 0.00!
The class was relatively interesting, but if you are an "English person" as I am, you are likely to find his assignment requirements very ambiguous. They seem to be written for people who have poor English skills. This instructor is an adjunct, and you can tell by his attitude. VERY slow in returning assignments, and almost never returns e-mails.
Do not take an online class with this instructor! He does not return graded papers, or return e-mails. Absolutely useless class; no interaction with the students. He also does not know how to use Angel properly, so good luck searching for the class material!
Ben is a very quiet teacher and he doesnt really teach. This class is very boring and i didnt learn anything new at all.
One of the best professors I've ever had and that's saying a lot. Seriously his class has ruined me for all other classes and professors. The only thing he didn't do well was online posting, but other than that, his class was amazing and his assignments were very inventive and interesting. TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
I am a person that hates English, but Johnson made it easy for me to understand and he is very helpful and grades easily. If you want to pass, take his class!
Probably one of the best English teachers I've ever had. He's easy to work with, class is really laid back, and he makes things easy to understand. Not too demanding, gives plenty of notice on assignments, and I'm about to take Eng 102 with him.
Great teacher! I would recomend him to anybody.
The class is really laid back, he does make you do quite a bit of essays. He grades decent definitely not an easy A.
Mr. Johnson is very nice and humble. I you don't understand anything, he will help you out. Essays are little bit challenging, but he grades very fairly.
He is a very friendly and helpful guy. I am weak in English but going though his 101 course helped me out a lot. I highly recommend his class.
He was pretty awesome and helpful teacher, gives you a fair amount of projects though, keep up on them and you'll do fine. Recommended :)
Somewhat lazy. He doesn't grade papers, so you have no idea how to improve on the next paper. He doesn't respond to emails. He has a smug attitude like hes too good for community college, but I don't think he's good enough! He should be teaching high school at best. The reading material was interesting, but that's all I liked.
I would recommend this professor to students. He is very helpful and understanding. Mr. Johnson is very nice and humble.
I can't wait to take this professor, Mr. Johnson, because I hear that he is humble and helpful. Perhaps I should wait to rate him, but I can't wait because he is going to be so humbly helpful.
I would recommend everyone to take any class with this instructor. Very nice and helpful guy, really nerdy but funny nerdy. When essays aren't very well written, he puts his input and its very helpful, gets you ready for the final.
Ben is awesome! He teaches you everything you need to know to complete the assignments he gives you. You don't have to waste your time trying to figure out what he expects from you. If you are lazy you probably won't enjoy this class but if you are looking to actually learn something he is the instructor to take.
Lots of writing but he grades fair and you a couple interesting books. I love to write so for me this was an easy A.
The best english teacher I've ever taken. He looks and talks like Seth Rogen so it makes the class more interesting and fun!!
He frequently changes due dates, and doesn't always say if something needs to be turned in or not. He isn't very good at replying to emails. I don't feel like the class was what I signed up for.
LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE SETH ROGEN, awesome sense of humor, and class wasn't a dread to go to! assignments were ehh they were awesome and I felt like I got what I signed up for but he's not the easiest grader, I couldn't get an A on anything always left me at 89%
The essays were difficult because personally I'm not that into literature, but if you were more interested they might be easier for you. He calls on people randomly to answer questions throughout the lecture, so be prepared. For the tests make sure you memorize the authors and titles of the stories because there are tons of matching questions.
Basically if you show up for class and participate, you'll get full credit. His grading is hard but he is so easy to talk to. If you want to get a better score on your essays all you have to do is ASK him what you're missing and he will be happy to sit down with you and clarify. Be prepared to spend a lot of time reading/writing. AMAZING TEACHER!!
Was told that this class wouldn't involve much research for papers. One of the first asgmts is an seven to nine hundred word essay! Each week expect a easy asgmt and a long paper. The final is huge!! five to seven pages not including front matter, appendices and works cited page, very detailed. Fair in grading.
He's awesome & funny. Not only is he helpful and extremely clear, he is available if you need any additional assistance. He's comfortable to be around and doesn't belittle people. We had someone in class who told him that they struggled in ENG101 and Ben made it clear that if he needed any additional help or clarification to let him know anytime.
He's an awesome teacher he grades hard but you can always as him for help very approachable dude! you have essays that are about 700-900 words long not bad! and if you don't pass you can always do revisions basically if you don't pass it's because you are lazy and don't put effort. Go to class everyday
This is a writing class, so expect essays and such. What hurt my grade was the group assignments that I felt were not graded fairly. Other than that, great professor for those who enjoy writing .
Tech Writ, was informative but lots of research type papers. Was told otherwise before I took the class. He grades fair and explains clearly! Might take another class with him, but only if I have to. Didn't care for the use of profanity.
He was overall very fair and pretty clear about what he was looking for in his assignments. He allows for one paper revision which was nice. Only real complaint is he takes FOREVER to grade stuff. At one point I had 9 ungraded assignments at the end of the quarter. Over all good experience, would take him again.
I'm not very good at English and ended with a 3.0 which is very good for me. I liked the way he taught and gave a lot of information in his modules of what he wanted. I took him online too and I never got confused. He does say he checks how much you go on canvas (attendance) though but I'm always on canvas anyways.
Seth Rogen or Ben Johnson is the real question here. The class work itself is easy, but it comes in all at once. Can be overwhelming. Can assign up to 2-3 essays in a week.
Ben was always overwhelming us with a ton of work. I think I did at least one 900-1100 paper every week. it isn't a necessarily hard class, unless you want to get a 4.0, its just time consuming. class time was mostly just him staring at us waiting for us to answer his questions. Lectures are pointless its all about the essays.
I fell behind in this class due to personal issues, & my grade went from an 81% to a 50% because I didn't turn in three major assignments. I explained to him why I fell behind and he totally understood, and after turning in my assignments late he graded them and I'm up to 87%! He's a very understanding professor & has a great sense of humor. 10/10
This class was not hard but it was a lot of work. There was many time I felt overwhelmed and I am usually good at English! Papers, questions, reading and other assignments all given at the same time, it was very difficult to juggle this class with my full time work and school schedule.
I took this class online during the summer and it was a really easy class, however, Ben was consistently slow at replying to me, which was frustrating especially when I would have a question about an essay and he wouldn't get back to me until 3 days after the paper was due. It's a 5 credit class, so the workload is fair, but it's all busy work.
Took this class over the summer. He was unresponsive to comments completely. Responded to emails only when it was too late. We were on to writing our next essay when the previous one hadn't been graded yet, so there was no room for improvement. Only one essay had feedback on why and how he graded it, the rest just had a grade and no explanation.
I was scared to take English at college level. Ben's online summer class was great for me. He always pointed out what you did good on an essay and gave tips for the next one. I feel most English teachers only pick on you, so it was refreshing to actually receive compliments. Assignments weren't too tough. Good teacher to get started at college lvl
Mr. Johnson is a great professor, I have taken two of his online courses. He assigns quite a few papers, but it is an English class. There is weekly work but nothing that can't be managed if you are good at self monitoring. I would take another one of his classes anytime.
He honestly sounds exactly like the actor Seth Rogen and I dig it. I'm still in his English 102 class this quarter but he's so rad I didn't want to wait to write a review on him haha. I don't say this lightly, but he's one of the best professors I've ever had. ALWAYS up for your opinion and insight. Patient, a fair grader, overall great guy.
DO NOT TAKE. I understand teachers being tough graders--but he is an unreasonable grader. I don't know how to explain it to all you potential students other than that he is just ridiculous. Yes, he is occasionally funny. The problem is that he takes up class by talking about unnecessary things--and then you are not prepared for his grading.
He's GREAT! There is nothing like an honest, fun, down-to-earth teacher. There is a lot of work, but it's English 235. He's funny and uses harsh language, but it's appropriate. He cares and will work with the class adjusting time schedule for due dates if there is a reason. He writes excellent letters of references for his students!
Mr. Johnson was a good professor. He was easy to work with, and was willing to help students in need. English is not one of my favorite subjects, but I think that Mr. Johnson did his best to make it interesting, although there were a few days where it seemed like not a lot was covered in a day.T here were several assignments and a 5-7 page final.
Excellent professor. I couldn't recommend him enough. Do your best and turn in your assignments. It is not an easy grade, but it is definitely not difficult to succeed in his class. He is always available to help and works with your needs if you attend class and keep him in the loop with any late work or need for an extension.
Lots of reading and writing, almost as though it were an English class.
Very funny.
Very tough grader! I have had Ben Johnson for two English classes now, and both times he bashed my work with no explanation. I even had an English scholar check my paper beforehand. It seems there's just no pleasing this guy. I would avoid his class if possible! Learn from my mistakes, Ben Johnson is horrible for online English classes!!
Johnson was great! He was funny and he did an awesome job at staying unbiased even when he did disagree. We use both of the books he assigned frequently, so do get them! Sometimes homework assignments were a lot of questions but they were easy enough and i respected him enough to do it with a good attitude.
Professor Johnson is a great teacher. He is a tough grader but he does give you a copy of his rubric so you know what to go for.
I took this class online, professor Johnson is a tough grader and he also got really behind on grading. Communication is not his strength.
The class was mostly just discussions every single day and he would randomly pick on anyone to see what they thought then once you told him what you thought he would continue to question your answer. Over thanksgiving he gave us a journal article to read that was 300 pages. Wouldnt recommend the class. Lots of work and he grades poorly.
This class is like eating pizza to lose weight. No matter how well you think youre doing, the results are terrible. TOUGH GRADER. DONT DO IT.
Do not take him for summer quarter if your taking a class other than his. He constantly has assignments lined up, it's very overwhelming when you have classes like math or a humanities class. He is a very tough grader, is a nice person but brutal on work. His class is based way to much on books, you have to look in the books for sample essay....
Not an easy A. But, if you follow directions you will do great. He's probably the best professor in the English department. He's very patient and understanding. Some students can be so dumb, yet still he genuinely pays attention to everyone.
Not an overwhelming amount of homework and pretty laid back
He doesn't put your grades in until the week before the final so you think you're doing great until then, and have a little freak out sesh. His midterm and final setups are horrible, it's the whole reason I got such a bad grade in the class. You can't expect someone to remember 400 pages of text when half it was read/discussed MONTHS ago.
Consisted of in class discussions. Pros: he would cancel class A LOT, hes funny, & relates to students. Cons: tough grader, gives many pop quizes over long readings, midterm&final was all memorization of quotes from 30 different people, he tends to take a while to grade work which makes it hard to improve for the next assignment. Wouldnt recommen
Mr. Johnson is so awesome! He looks a lot like Seth Rogan, laughs and sounds like him too! Pretty funny and can keep the class engaged. There is a decent amount of homework but he is clear on what to do. Defiantly would take his class again.
He was not a bad teacher, but he was not the best, it was very difficult to receive an A on essays and wouldn't give back great feedback
Not horrible, I am shocked at the reviews and ratings on here. In the first 5-6 weeks the workload is A LOT. A big project due every week which could be an essay or formatting numerous documents (this was a technical writing class). The grading was unclear, sometimes no rubric. Late work accepted but knocked down 10% a day. Effort reflects grade.
He is the toughest grader I have had so far at CBC. He gives terrible feedback, if any at all. I passed English 101 with a 4.0 and his class is leaps and bounds harder. I would avoid taking him, especially online.
Took his class online and he barely gave feedback. He's also a very slow grader. You would get your tiny bit of feedback the night before the paper was due, but he would extend the due date. Discussions were completely based on your readings. Overall, not a bad class if you're confident in writing.
Worst class to take when taking other classes! He constantly has homework assignments lined up and big essays due every other week. Discussions based on readings and have to be a minimum of 800 words. Doesn't give feedback and takes a long time to grade papers, impossible to get an A in this class!
Feedback on essays vague
This professor graded really harsh. He didn't give lots of feedback after his tough grades unless you asked why. The class was well organized and it was clear when assignments were due. There is a lot of reading short stories and discussions afterwards.
Difficult class. He's a tough grader, assigns a lot of homework, takes forever to grade things. Will assign an essay but won't grade your rough draft until a day or two before your final draft is due. Most assignments are out of the books so make sure you read them and give detailed answers. If you have no other choice in teacher he's ok
Creates new module work last minute, doesn't give feedback on work unless you ask for it, does not grade things in a timely manor, assignment work isn't clearly listed or easily found (Look under files) and for finals he last minute adds four or more assignments that totals with the final to be almost 4,000 words. Don't take any of his classes!!!!!
Don't recommend, emailed him about what I could do to improve my writing skills never got a response back. Readings become super dense. Offers no feedback. You get a discussion, reading questions, every week and most time more assignment like analysis, and essays. Each response has to be at least 200 words. Do not take unless you are ready to work.
Johnson just seems like he doesn't care. There were many times we had to write an essay (but turn in a rough draft first), where the rough draft didn't get graded until after the main essay was already due. It took weeks for a single assignment to get graded. I messaged him with a question about homework months ago have yet to get a response still
Professor Johnson is great at his job. The class isn't too tough but there are always a few things to work on every week. The discussions aren't that hard either. There are like four papers total for this class and an annotated bibliography but you get a fair amount of time to work on each, especially the final paper. Bussin Rating: 8/10
Constantly giving out HW without clear instructions on how to do it. Takes weeks to grade assignments. Gives rude and most time unhelpful feedback. Had very few good experiences in this class and I was really excited for it
Great teacher
Gives homework with unclear instructions, and takes weeks and even up to a month to grade work. The feedback he gives is very little if any, and the feedback is rarely helpful.
Awful professor! Took the class and expected to continue a 4.0 gpa but with a grade of 98 to get it, its impossible. The grading criteria is crazy difficult and there is no way to know what he wants to get full points. He gives poor rough draft comments and never responded to a single email. Joined his zoom and half the time he didnt show.
Professor Johnson was okay, he is a tough grader and a 4.0 is a 98. When he returned assignments he left little to no feedback which wasn't very helpful. There was a lot of reading, but I can't say I didn't learn a lot from his class.
Does not give any feedback, does not answer emails. Takes forever to grade essays and discussions. Assigns so much reading for discussions once a week. Directions for assignments are super unclear, and his grading is always changing. He never has set requirements or rubrics.
Lots of homework for no reason! Don't try and get ahold of him... he won't answer. Tough grader. Be prepared to write papers in advance to get a good grade. Books required! 10/10 don't recommend it.
Prof Johnson is a good professor. The most annoying thing about his class is the weekly discussions that require about 600-800 words. But other than that there is not much homework. I also thought that he was a fair grader and that his essays were pretty easy, other than his feedback on rough drafts is not great.
Extremely tough grader! He grades essays super late to the point where I had a couple days before my second essay where I got any feedback which wasn't even much! Over all a terrible class. Do not take unless you're ready to do a ton of homework and LONG ESSAYS. Stay cleaner of his class I do not recommend.
Does not give clear instructions or a rubric. Requires rough drafts to give feedback on for main assignments and gives little to no feedback. His feedback ranges from details such as "good" or "needs work". No examples. A rough draft due more than a week before the final draft but responded with feedback past 10PM of the final draft's due date.
Good teacher, not very tech-savvy though
This professor will require you to write a minimum of 1000-2000 words per week spread across a few assignments. I was bothered by not having any idea what my grade would be until the last week of the course because of his extremely delayed grading. Would not recommend this class or professor if you have a life outside of college.
He gave my class introduction a grade of 8/10. That should tell you about Benjamin. Get ready to push your other classes out of the way for his million essays.
Does not explain the assignments well and leaves you guessing what needs to be done. Also he takes too long on grading so you don't know how you're doing on the assignments until it's too late.
Class was cancelled a few times but he found a way to catch us up. He's a really funny guy, love sarcastic humour. This class was mostly readings + questions homework and then discussions in class the next day. I enjoy how organized he is with giving us schedules of what the next few weeks will look like. A bit late grading but overall great.
He is STERN on grading, one mistake like not setting spacing to 2.0 could drop you're essay down to 70/100, keep in mind essays are 20% of the whole class. Not tech-savvy, little feedback on work, and then will "grade accordingly" to all the mishaps in your you're hundred papers that he could've told you to fix. Funny and chill but STERN and cold.
Professor Johnson was a great teacher who gave good feedback and provided interesting topics. Although there were quite a few assignments, I did not struggle unless I procrastinated. He also gave and received feedback very well which was refreshing. If I were to give an overall grade for this class I would give it an A minus.
LOTS of essays each week, and all of them were graded sternly. I appreciated the lack of peer review in the course. He was late to grade a rough draft leading to my final draft being submitted late, but he gave me a pass. I would not recommend taking his course if you have a job or are taking it during the summer quarter.
I have never felt less engaged in my life, and I generally prefer english courses to anything else. There is no communication, he is slow to grade and give feedback, and both of these things mean you will always be turning in late work. Tough grader with high expectations for how little effort he puts into the course. Good luck.
Ben Johnson provided great support when needed, emailing him if you need more time for assignments is a must, he almost always gives extensions. He grades tough on written assignments aka Essays, he gives good feedback on essays though. Lots of extra credit opportunities towards the end of the quarter so take advantage of it.
you have to pass the final exam in order to PASS THE CLASS. you get x2 trys though. still, lots of papers and failed the exam the first time sooooo almost cried waiting for 5 days to find out if i passed the class. passed the class w/ a 85% almost failed over that exam though.
I got little to no feedback on many assignments.
Assignment details were unclear and hard to understand. I do not recommend this class.
Professor Johnson was one of my first professors here at CBC. His hour long lectures to me often seemed as though they took awhile as instead of getting straight to the point, he liked to go off on tangents. However, the work that he assigned was very minimal. (three essays, four response papers, and a pass/fail exit exam) He is very kind!
Professor Johnson can be a tough grader, but using Unstuckstudy and the free textbook helped me prepare effectively. His feedback is limited, but the class is manageable with diligence.
I did not feel like I learned much from this class. He also gave very little feedback on most assignments and essays.
have to buy two books, long assignments that make u push your other classes out the way. He's ok but tough grader. Hes terrible at grading on time. which you don't know if you are doing good or bad. I suggest not to take him unless you are a very good writer. 3 essays &' a P/F essay. Don't recommend.
I loved this teacher. I had a teacher before him and I did not like that teacher. I got to Professor Johnsons class and knew things were going to be better. I liked how he is so considerate and how he grades. I thought I was gonna have a hard time again with grades because I'm not the best at writing. But I learned that I'm not that bad.
Every tag I added onto this rating is the exact opposite of what he is! Doesn't respond to emails, takes a month to grade assignments, doesn't give feedback, horrid instructions. Overall just a waste of money, to take Bens class. There are much better professors to take than this guy. Stear clear, don't say I didn't warn you!
I liked this class. It was very small and had around 10 people in it. He was very easy to reach outside of class and was very understanding of any family emergencies. He will work with you if you need it. This was a literature class so 99% of it is reading. If you don't like to read then DO NOT take this class. Overall I would take it again.
This instructor is a very tough grader but does give great feedback. He allows you to resubmit 1 of your 3 main essays for a better grade, and offers extra credit. Some assignments were a bit confusing where I would need to message him, but once he did he clarified. He does take a while to grade your assignments.
Ben was such an annoying professor to have. He says to message him with any questions you have, but then takes 4+ days to respond. There are 3 essays, 4 responses, and the final is an in class pass or fail essay. Overall, it was just a lot of reading and papers. He's pretty chill though.
