Really good teacher. He knows his stuff and lectures are interesting. Tests are multile choise 1/2 on reading and 1/2 on text. There are essays for every test, but he gives you the question(s) in advance. I would recomend him.

He is a very funny man even at 8:30 in the morning. His lectures are interesting and he cares about what he teaches. Test aren't too bad and he gives sample questions and the exact essay questions. Take him for History and you'll have fun!

This is my favorite teacher ever.He inspired me to travel, I did spend all my $-and loved it. I majored in History because of this guy...and I did well! If you get to know him in office hrs. he's really great. Take his class! Its inspirational.

class is resonable. not hard, but not easy. basically, to do good on his exams, read the book and go to his class for lectures. honestly, i never even READ the book, but i studied his study guide on his website, and i got a 'b' in his class. i also concentrated on the essay part of his exams!

Kline is very generous with points on his essay part of the exams. As long as you read the book and attend his lectures you will do well. His lectures are not boring either. He has a great sense of humour.

Cool teacher, grades on a curve, not much extra credit, test mostly on lecture not much from text and some from the back of the work book. Essays are the easiest part. Very funny but, you have to come to class everyday for the lecture. All in all he was an okay teacher

The BEST teacher at De Anza PERIOD! He tells you a lot of stuff that you wouldn't ordinarily learn w/ other teachers. His lectures are actually so good that you'd rather listen to him than watch the videos he shows! Think of it as a standup routine with factual evidence. Tests are easy IF YOU STUDY.

His tests are very hard but he is very nice and wants you to pass. Lectures are fun because he ads humor. Had us watch some videos (most were very interesting. Don't miss the toad video.)

Have had Kline for 3 quarters now; cant stop taking his classes - simply an excellent professor with so much to teach and can go on great rants about hilarious topics. Hes hard though, but you'll learn more from him than most other teachers.

Yeah, great professor. Umm.. his tests are pretty easy, if you do the reading. I managed to pull an A with bad study skills. I'm sure you can too, unless you hate history or have a very short attention span.

Simply, awesome. Don't come to class late. Pay attention during lecture and you're sure to ace at least part of the test. The reading is a fair load. Oh, and do NOT miss his travel speech. It will inspire you. Take him any chance you get!

Friendly guy. Took his class even when it has nothing to do with my major (engineering). Very attentive to his students too, like when someone stole my final exam I talked to him over the winter break and he gave me another chance to redo it. I will take Hist 3C from him soon and complete the 3 series.

Dr. Kline is a very informative instructor. His lectures are very clear and are delivered in such a way that people with no interest in history will find extremely engrossing. There is virtually no busy work to speak of. His class is curved very fairly, allowing a great frequency of high grades. A good GPA booster as well.

His classes are so funny and interesting! His tests are pretty easy if you do the reading. There is not a lot of homework, and the homework he does assign is really easy and just boosts your grade. The tests are curved. Just take the class for his lectures though--they're just absolutely fabulous.

He is a great teacher. Class attendence is a must because half of the test questions come from the book and the other half is from his lectures. His great personality makes learning fun. He also grade on a curve. I recommend taking this professor if you have a history class.

Dr. Kline is by far the greatest teacher I have ever had. You can be totally uninterested, and even bored to death of history, and yet somehow Kline makes it entertaining. He has a very cynical view of everything, and will always throw in a joke, drug crack, or swear word in order to keep the masses awake. A+.

Social Environmental History. Don't forget the words "social" and "history". IMO this class had very little to do with the environment. He over-emphasizes names and dates. The study of prehistoric man is an absolute bore. His workbook sucks and makes it impossible to learn from. An "A" seemed impossible, but then again there is no hw.

Dr Kline is very clear on his lectures, presents them with a lot of enthusiasm. You need to read the book, and do NOT procrastanate on the exams or your grade will show it. 3 exams (multiple choice) a couple videos, and 3 workbook projects. Again, don't procrastanate and you'll be fine. Very funny teacher and helpful.

Kline is a interesting teacher. He keeps the class moving along with a lot of information but in an entertaining way. You must attend class because the tests are 50% lecture and 50% reading. Not a lot of homework and the test are slightly hard - lots of dates. All in all great teacher. He makes history fun!

Req'd video notes (10 points each, no way to make up) and essays on tests relate to reading only (must have decent length and thought put into). He gives the essay Q's before the test, though. Offers an extra credit assignment. DO IT. Little HW (just some workbook and reading, again: DO IT). Good prof overall, would take classes by him again.

Kline is a dedicated, intelligent and well intentioned teacher. Sometimes he does go off on tangents and what not, but they are good natured and rarely hurt the learning experience. The books for the class are a bit repetitious but do tend to focus on presenting the facts clearly. I had him for 3c this quarter, taking him for 3a! Solid Teacher.

THIS GUY IS COOL. he swears a lot, tells lots of outrageous jokes and stories, and is a funny guy in general. im not good at memorizing facts, but because of the jokes he turned them into, i remembered a LOT. take lots of notes off lecture and book, do every assignment, be a good student, and you'll be fine. Loved this guy. He made everything make sense in world history and gave practical reasons as to why things happened. Didn't give us a "those people are bad", but dove into the psychology of the descisions made in history. Tests are challenging due to the variety of specific questions he asks, but still ok. I got a B in the class.

Extremely intelligent, sarcastically witty, funny all around guy. If you are good at taking lecture notes and reading the book this class if for you. If you want to just fly by and sit in the back playing DS, get out. Drives home everything he talks about. Tests are a bit challenging if you don't study enough.

This is a very entertaining class to attend, I loved it. Make sure to take thorough notes though, and to READ. Contrary to what people wrote I found the books to be great. They are short and concise and have exactly the info you need. Some test questions are tricky but I was still able to ace all the test by going to class and doing the reading.

Kline makes history interesting. He tells stories the entire time & makes it easy to understand past events in modern day terms. Exams are based on book & lecture which don't always cover the same material. You have to read the book & come to his lecture to be prepared for exams. Gives essay questions in advance & grades on a generous curve.

This class is very interesting. I totally recomend this class. You can use it also for as an ICS course. Kline makes History exciting. He speaks clear and to the point. He's very approachable. You do need to attend classes to understand the book better, but he doesn't take role. Make sure you are on time, he doesn't tolarate late students.

Kline is one of the few good teachers at De Anza. He makes history fun since he explains things so well. He makes class fun by cracking jokes. He uses a lot of curse words, but that's only in his jokes. It's kinda like relating to the teenage students. His test are hard if you don't study, so review the book and your notes.

Kline is a really funny teacher keeps u awake and interested. His tests are hard and 100% of your grade is based on test score, no homework no projects. So if your a good test taker this class is for you. Tests are 50% lecture 50% textbook.

Dr. Kline has a chill class that's fun to attend. I've been in almost every class he has taught to keep me going through boring quarters with other boring teachers. His class is easy and he makes some good jokes. Going to miss taking his classes!

He is a great teacher and teaches alot but just beware of the text book it is hard but he does not assign a lot of of test questions from it. Pay attention, show up, read the book (study that) and easy to atleast get a B in class. I got an A with little effort so can anyone who listens and shows up.

attendance isnt needed, but u'll miss out on a lot of information! lecture notes is part of the test! reading book is rather boring but nonetheless is essential to acing the test! the essay is really easy! only 1 essay thru this class. just show that u read his paper by writing facts,dates,events within ur opinionated paper and u'll get 60/60 on it

He is a coooolest teacher Ive ever had. His class is hella funny. always makes us smile!! He gave us extra credit and some easy HW. Go to class and you gonna learn many things. exams were just multiple choices. Im sure you will love his class.

If you are not good at MC tests and short essays then don't take this class.. His tests are pretty specific and you have to pay attention very careful at each lecture, take good notes, and read the book in order to pass.

His classes are extremely dumbed down trivial adventures. His lectures are surface-level stuff I learned in the 6th grade. His lectures are useless because the tests come straight out of the study questions from his own unorganized textbooks. Easy A, but some HW and reading for the test. Took him for 3A, B, & C. He is so funny, which makes you want to show up to his class to learn. He has great lectures you can't miss because his information in his lectures are not in the book but info in the book is used for essays. Has exercises in the book that are super easy and has a midterm and final. Is very knowlegeable and exciting teacher

He is pretty good at the overall content even if it is a little shallow. The book is a little less expensive than the average (but is a custom). The class was graded on a curve and there are a bunch of little take home quizzes. The only thing to watch out for is he is strict with attendence and cell phone usage.

Excellent professor. He knows his stuff but even better, he knows how to engage and communicate and connect with people. Great sense of humor and tons of funny stories. He wrote his own text and expects you to read it. I'd take another class with him again. I'd never take Pitney or Stevens. Take Klein or Knittel. They teach and are not boring.

I originally took this class for a GE, and now I'm double majoring with history because of kline! Amazing professor, knows how to connect with his students. His lectures tie together better than any other history teacher i've ever had, and seemingly unrelated events make SO much more sense after he explains it. Highly recommend!

I took all 4 of his classes. He is just so damn awesome! Everything that comes out of his mouth is interesting. I learned alot. Test are easy because the test questions are basically in the book. You dont even need to go to class but you will want to because his lectures are just so damn entertaining and fun!

Dont take his class if you cant take a joke. He will notice it and tear you apart all quarter, hes a really fun teacher and picks on everyone so you cant really take it personal. Laugh at his jokes, he'll pick on you less. And he curses during lectures which is kind of odd,other than that I liked him! The material was a bit hard but the movies help

I am a ESL student, so it is a little bit hard to keep up with his lecture. his test is almost based on his lecture which is hard for me. but beside that he is really awesome. it is really fun during his class. his lecture can change your opinion towards life. you will never regret to taking his class. If you show up every day and take notes, you'll get an A - hell, even if you have a friend who shows up every day who is willing to give you his/her notes, you'll probably get an A. The professor is knowledgable, but can focus too much on putting on a show rather than a lecture. Chill, easy class though.

I absolutely loved this class. Fun and easy going teacher. Easy to get a good grade. All the notes we write are on the test. All I had to do was skim through my notes and I easily passed. The essay portion to the midterm/final could be difficult. As long as you read the book then you should be fine! Highly recommend this teacher!! :)

Dr. Kline is incredible. Lectures are 2 hrs but he's so good at it that you actually pay attention and enjoy it the whole time. Break after 1 hr. Doesn't take roll BUT there are random movie days with easy points that can't be made up. Everything on tests are from lectures. Recycles Qs for final. 2 tests, 1 final, & 3 easily-graded in-class essays.

Easily one of the better teachers at this school. Took him twice already. Just take notes then study those for the exams. You dont even have to read the book. I took Kline way back in '98-99 and I still have fond memories of his class. I took 3 of his classes, because it was entertaining. I really liked his stories. I still remember him talking about his travels in Africa. Currently I'm back in school and miss having a professor that's a character like Kline. Glad to know he's still as popular.

Kline is amazing! He really loves his subject. Though he thinks that math and history are the only true major and swears a bit, he is actually a great professor. He really hates tardiness and will lock the door 5 minutes after class starts, so be on time! You have to study the notes, so keep them neat and organized. That way, you will get a A.

EASY A. PAY ATTENTION, WRITE NOTES, AND LEARN TO READ/WRITE ESSAYS. I studied for this class the night before every time. I literally just memorized 4 weeks of notes. Also write out important points of the reading, and memorize them. For the essays just reference the readings and write like 2 pages and = easy A on test. Set the curve for every test

Kline is not your average professor. He says bad words and doesn't sugar coat anything. No homework. All lecture based and exam essays pertain to material in assigned readings..he is awesome. Dr. Ben Kline is an amazing professor! He loves what he teaches and loves what he does. He is very clear. I actually took a 7:30 am class just so I could take another class with him. He shows lots of movies, he only takes attendance a few times, very few homework assignments, and 3 tests. This class is perfect for both the lazy and the academics.

Kline is the man. He is hands down the best professor I've had to date, and will probably hold that position for a while. He makes history so funny/interesting. There are two tests and a final, each with an essay. But if you just attend class and listen to his lectures you'll pass each test with an A. Oh and the essays are on his own book. TAKE IT.

There's only a book that you have to read a couple chapters from for the tests, but you can find the PDF version online, and he encourages it. LOVED that class!

He swears quite a lot but that only adds to the entertainment value of his class; he basically tells you things that are going to be on the exam, so if you attend class shut up and pay attention you should do just fine. He doesnt like text books he just assigns literally two chapters of a book he wrote.

Awesome lecturer with lots of energy. Exams and projects are simple. Nothing Tricky. Spend a week in advance on those at the class is an easy A. During lecture, there is tons of note taking so be energized before coming to class. I took his 2hr lecture class and I think his 50min lecture class may be better for note taking.

By far the best professor I have take at De Anza, his style of teaching is made for college students. He does;t treat you like high school students unlike some professors at De Anza. Professor Kilne is one of those teachers that makes you want to major in their subject. He's hilarious and class was always something to look forward to. The class is all lecture but you want to listen because he makes it so interesting and relate able. DO YOUR READINGS, they aren't hard. If you take notes, study and do your readings you'll pass.

He is really loud when he talks, but his class is SUPER easy. He doesn't really write notes on the board, so you need to listen & write every word he says! Easy tests, literally out of his notes, & make sure you study! Write the notes & you'll pass. Read the book! You need it in order to respond the essay question. If you miss class, you wont pass.

regardless if you hate or love history, this is your man. He is a beast. He knows how to teach history and knows how to teach where it matters. He knows his stuff and most definitely deserves his phd title. His lecture on the american "revolution" in 3b is perhaps one of the greatest history lectures you'll ever witness in your entire life.

This class was freaking awesome. Kline is hilarious and he loves to talk about random stuff at times. He tries to make lectures fun, and they're really clear. Tests consists of 40 MC, 2 EC, and then a short essay/ paragraph on the book we're reading. I've gotten A's on every test. He's a great teacher, I really recommend him!

Kline was one of the greatest professors I ever had, lectures were hilarious and kept the class involved. Never used power points, so make sure you're listening and writing stuff down. Very clear on what is on the exams. Final project is take home and given at beginning of quarter.

Uses profanity, treats history as if it were alive and still relevant (which it is) today. Will change the way you view the subject matter. If you see Kline on-campus, just say hi. Hands down THE BEST TEACHER I've ever had. No other professor has made learning this easy. If you're looking for a GPA boost class this is the one to take. He teaches clearly and is an easy grader. Benjamin was a very understanding teacher, if you talk to him he will understand your situation. I had Dr. Klein as a professor at SJSU in 1998! I know, so very long ago, but obviously he struck a chord as I have tracked him down again to reminisce! After having taken all of my World History classes with Kline, I can confidently say that he is the most inspirational teacher I have ever had. His passion for the subject is infectious, and the 'travel speech' that he gives every quarter is highly motivational. I took Kline's summer course, with History 3A. There's lectures, and videos for credit. His lectures are engaging, and he never fails to make you laugh. There's a take home final, and a test at the end with two in the middle. He bases his tests on mainly the lecture and book, and there's an essay question in all.

Hilarious guy, lectures are great and clear, no hw. If you show up, take notes, and read the portions of his book that he assigns, you'll get an A. His tests are straightforward and questions are directly from his lectures. Hiss essays are essential summaries of his readings (2-3 pages out of the book that he wrote). Extremely east side.

Professor Kline is one of the best professor at De Anza I've ever known, he's one of my top list next to Sal Breiter. He's hilarious, participation is all the matters, he goes through lectures very clearly so be sure to pick up some facts in your notes. As overall, he's class is really entertaining!

He's a funny/nice guy! His class was pretty basic, no homework other than a paper at the end of the term. Shows lots of movies, usually once a week, MAKE SURE TO STUDY FOR THE EXAM. The exams are very thorough though. Make sure you write down notes during lecture and study them and read the assigned reading for that exam and you should do well.

Kline is the residential De Anza history dept rock star! His jokes are often corny and he gets extremely off topic but he's very lovable. Everyone got A's! We actually did learn the material and get properly tested to his credit. He's just a really great teacher. He gives a very interesting India-centric view on hist of West civ. Graded on 3 exams.

This guy inspired a me to be interested in history. I took five classes with him and every day I had his class, I woke up excited to be at school. He's unconventional, playful, funny, and just a good dude. I still read his texts on Greek history once in a while. My favorite college professor, no doubt.

Awesome Guy, I had some trouble at the middle of the semester and i just talked to him about it, he is very nice and understanding, but still makes you work for the grade. Awesome lecturer, take notes or just record him. He's super funny too.

Kline has to be my favorite professor at De Anza thus far. His lectures are amazing and keep you interested whether you enjoyed history before or hated it. He has a special ability to make his students WANT to go to his class and learn more. I have taken 3 of his classes just for the sake of hearing more lectures. Hes an easy A, take the class!

I already had his HIST 6A before going to 6B. He is one of my favorite professors at school. If you work hard for his class, you will not regret taking his class. I enjoyed every single minute of his class.

Ben Kline is an amazing history professor like no other. He incorporates humor into his lectures to keep all students awake and focused. He is super passionate about history and he will make you love history as well. The lectures do cover a lot of information, but as long as you are present every day and study, you'll be fine.

GREAT PROFESSOR! Study and show up easy A. Assignments are very easy. Test is everything from lecture, no surprises. Favorite professor ive ever had. Super funny and explains everything perfectly. He does teach a lot but hes a great professor. Literally coolest professor youll get.

Best history professor at De Anza. Kline is a lecture-HEAVY professor. If you don't show up and take notes then you will not pass. BUT that's all you have to do. Just show up everyday, take a page or two of notes and be on your way. That's most of the exam, he does have you read 10 or so pages each exam on your own. He manages to make the class fun

He is THE MAN! Started off as a psychology major, but changed it to history because of him! Only wish I could be as great of an instructor as he is! Better take him while you have the chance because he said he's retiring. :( He will be the legendary history teacher at De Anza College. He's so relatable and down-to-earth, not a snobby academic.

Amazing teacher, the best history teacher I've had. Hardly any homework. Show up to lecture and take a bunch of notes. Watches movies/ documentaries fairly often. Tests are a little hard, just make sure you study.

He is so funny and energetic, I like his class! Make sure show up to the class everyday, cause he doesn't require any textbook and he doesn't use textbook to teach, so you have to be there everyday for notes! Work for the exam and you will get an A!

Kline if you ever read this... You the man. For once, I actually REMEMBER stuff I learned in a history class months after it's been finished. His lectures were very engaging, he made me appreciate learning history a lot more.

As much a stand-up comedian as a history teacher, Professor Kline is extremely funny, but also very passionate and knowledgeable about his subject. Very honest with his feedback, which I personally find helpful. If you're a faint hearted, liberal-minded millenial who gets offended easily then this professor is not for you. I highly recommend Kline!

Currently a student at Berkeley and back when I took Kline, I somehow learned a lot more less level of difficulty than I do from a lot of my Berkeley courses. He's better than a lot of my professors here. I miss him very much, his jokes, his stories, his raspy voice, his great understanding of broad historical topics. Kline made me a great student.

I don't know what that "awful" rating is about, especially since the person hasn't even taken his class! Kline is AWESOME!

yo take this dude's class if you can. Dude's lectures are interesting and he breaks it down into 20min recordings so you don't have to suffer through 1 hr lectures. Exams are straightforward, materials are cool. He's insightful and also responsive. Just read/watch the things he assigns and you're good.

Hes a good professor overall, I was worried the first week when I took him as to the 50 min time to do both 50 mc and essay. Hes a solid choice. We have weekly movie notes and worksheet due every Friday. Weekly readings, two exams and final. Term project due end of quarter and gives the whole quarter to do. Take him!

I took Kline for Hist 6C 4 years ago during my time at De Anza, and now I've graduated from SJSU as an accounting major. He is hands down my most favorite Professor of any class I've taken, and his lectures are the most memorable. Kline is the realest professor you'll ever come across and an entertaining lecturer. The world needs more Ben Klines.

I don't know why people on here are criticizing his online exam structure. His lectures were simple to understand and condenses necessary information that you need to know for his exams. You think doing 50 questions and an essay is hard online? Try doing it in person and it's still not complicated. Study and you will pass. Too many whiners today.

Great professor! His lectures are easy to follow and actually interesting, coming from someone who doesn't really like history. He doesn't have a heavy Western bias despite teaching Western history and his history book First Along the River is succinct and doesn't beat around the bush. Tests reflect the work he gives, all you need to do is review.

Only professor I've heard out himself as a commie. Super based. But yeah he's also a super fun and engaging professor. Doesn't use textbooks/canvas (he's not great with electronics), so everything is verbal/on blackboard. History is pretty easy though, so unless you don't attend class it's a pretty easy pass.

I took this async. We had weekly recorded lectures that were about 45 minutes in total. There are weekly documentaries that you have to write a short essay on. The tests are multiple choice with an essay(basically short answer). Watching lectures all the time was boring but the class was easy. The weekly documentary essays were annoying though.

Very funny and knowledgeable guy would recommend! Formatted with weekly movie assignments with a small essay, and short lecture videos per week, very easy. There is also a term project that you have the whole quarter to work on. There are 2 mid terms and one final exam, which consists of 50 mc questions and 1 essay portion with 1 hour to complete.

Do the work, watch the 25-40min lectures, and read and you'll be fine. As the review below said, 2 exams, 1 final. Exams 50 mins 50 q's 1 essay / Final 60 mins 50 q's 1 essay. Essay q is usually about how history developed (main events, major individuals). He doesn't expect you to write perfectly in only 60 mins. There are weekly movie assignments.

The lectures in the class were very inspiring. Professor Kline is passionate about what he teaches and gives fascinating lectures. I enjoyed the movie assignments too, where we simply watch a movie and write a response. I loved learning about Roman and Greek culture. He makes history seem like a lense through which we better understand ourselves.

Ben is a very smart and insightful professor. He surprised me with his knowledge about the British and his knowledge which is usually unknown to most history students. Definitely recommend. The class and the material were easy. He is approachable and has Zoom office hours. He does not do letters of recommendation for online classes.
