A very fun and fairly easy class, if you like writing or music
Analyzing text in class discussions is fun. Passionate & great sense of humor.
curly hair is a mess

energetic way to be introduced to literature.

Very unorganized, very cool, really connects with students. If you need a class that's easy but won't put you to sleep, Ben is the guy.
If you just want to have fun, take this class. If you are interested in learning anything, take something else.
Unorganized at times.. but makes class enjoyable, and is a great guy!
Awesome teacher. Disorganized but endearing, genuinly wants people to learn and loves to teach. If you like open, lively courses, take him. If you like a structured, by-the-syllabus course, then DO NOT take him. You won't enjoy it.
AWESOME! AND PASSIONATE, GREAT TEACHER
Awesome Teacher. Kohn is the man. His passion for writing, literature, and poetry is extremely contagious. I now try to work my schedule so I can be in his classes. I learned a ton from him.
His teaching style is unusual but energetic. He doesn't care if he looks like and ass and is funny. I like all his hair. Too bad he's married.
Completely scattered but so passionate about his topic. His enthusiasm is contagious. I too lament his married status.
BEN'S HOT!!!!! we all love him a whole bunch and his class is fun and interesting.
He is enthusiastic and creative. A breath of fresh air
ben rocks. he loves to teach, he loves students who are interested. he wants all students to be interested. he really cares!
The instructor knows an amazing amount about all kinds of music. Course a bit heavy on theory but its presented in a fun way and with lots of examples. I bought a load of cds after this class.
take any class that you can with him a totaly awsome teacher- ask him about the books on the list before you buy because sometimes he dosen't even get to them.
Tuvan throat singers rock! That class was awsome.
if you're a slacker this is your dream teacher. Classes are a bit disorganized, but then again if you're a slacker you're probably very disoragnized. I learned a lot of crap about fim that I never knew before so Benny gets a lot of credit for that.
unpredictable but fun. honestly, if your the kind of person who regularly attends classes, you'll exceed w/out doing alot of work and have lots of fun. if you rarely go to class, you probably won't pass. only thing that made me mad was that he required over $100 worth of books & we only opened 1.
Keeps things interesting, stimulating lectures, talks and writes on board so it's easier to learn, interesting material, ample opportunities to earn a good grade, very fair, very fun.
The BEST TEACHER I've EVER HAD! You need to take this class. Not only is it interesting in its own right, Ben makes it 1000x more interesting. Very lenient on assignments -there's quite a bit of writing, but you can choose almost any subject to do it on. He really goes off of creativity. A+++
Onkel Ben is a great teacher. I can't describe what makes it work, but he's just damn good. If you come to class every day, he makes sure you connect in to the class and that you will get a good grade. He starts with the assumption that you are an A student, and you just need to provide a little evidence to support it.
The best teacher I've ever had. Bottom line. This guy actually cares about what he's doing/saying and how he's coming across. His enthusiasm is evident to all and this makes it all the more easy to be drawn into whatever the subject matter is. Why can't all my teachers be like this?

GREAT TEACHER!!!
Entertaining. . . reminds me of one of those fast talking magicians . . ."nothin' up my sleeve". Smoke and mirrors, no effort or independent thinking required, no assignments to speak of. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Haven't had this much fun since watching Blue's Clues. Not for serious minded types.
Ben is the slice.
Ben is deffinently the slice! He's the reason I get up in the morning!
The most cosmopolitan instructor at Whatcom. He knows more about more things than any teacher I've had. If you're serious you can get a lot out of the class, if not music in the dark anyway!

I took Ben for German 101, 102, and 103. I would love to take more classes from him. He's a great teacher and brought tons of fun to each class. In fact, he's the slice!
extremely knowledgable and passionate about western music. he had stories about the stories in the book. most interesting teacher i've had at whatcom or western.
He is so passionate about his subject matter that you can't help but like listening to him. He is also such a friendly (and ridiculously hot) guy, you just want to hang out with him. I would highly suggest taking a humanities class with him, but I heard his music classes are really technical and hard.
Ben is one of the nicest and genuine people I have ever met. His laughter is contagious and he is a dedicated teacher. I have learned more in his class than any other. Take his classes. There is alot of writing, however Ben is leniant as long as it is college level. This teacher is a dream come true and very nice looking as well as charming.
Ben was the most awesome teacher ever! He knows how to make you laugh your pants off. He is my most favorable teacher in the world, I would recommend ben to anybody!! He always has something interested to say, and well as having the funniest stories. Coming to class didnt feel like an obligation. BEN RULES!!! WOOHOO!!!
Ben gets it. He has a strong command of his subject and is passionate about it. He is very supportive in creative solutions to assignments and is always open to discussion in class. He is one of the finest teachers I have ever had. Also, if you're looking for an easy A and can write decently I would definately recommend his class.
Ben is extremely helpful. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun
Lots of lecturing but mostly fun and entertaining. Keeps saying he welcomes class discussion but is reluctant to call on you for questions or comments. ??? Very unorganized and never returns your papers - so don't expect any feedback to help you improve your writing skills or know how you're doing in class. Really cool guy, though! Knows his stuff!
Ben is a great teacher. I wasnt interested in this topic much at the begining of class, but he is so passionate about what he teaches and really helps you understand the material.
Simply put Hier Kohn is sehr toll!!! The best teacher at whatcom, gave me a great letter of rec and is by far the funnest teacher you can ever have. We did not learn as much as I would have like but we did have a lot of fun.
Ben is an amazing teacher AND a silver fox! :D
Ben is a fantastic teacher. His classes were fun and his explanations were always clear. I enjoyed learning from him and would recommend his classes to anyone who wants to learn something interesting. They're pretty low stress too: just show up for class.
Ben is a really funny guy and totally involved in what he teaches, which is always good! However, the class lacked structure and sometimes he would go way off topic and then would have to rush at the end of the week to teach everything for that week. Alright instructor.
I love ben and the class! Every calss I've ever taken from him has been a blast and an awsome learning experiance. I TOTALLY recomend him.
Well-developed ~2-day lectures that touch on art forms, ancient art, contemporary art, and some philosophy. Has a keen understanding of art. Great for book references! Write down every book he recommends! Talk to him about your own area of interest, too.
Don't bother buying the texts, get them from the library instead. Ben's organization system is awful but works for him, mostly. He strays off agenda but has a lot of ground to cover, and is passionate about his subjects. Graded our midterm the week before finals... not sure of grade until WAY too late to drop the class. He's lenient on attendance.
Ben Kohn is awesome & makes learning enjoyable! Simple as that.
AMAZING. Take every class you can...
Ben rocks he's not only a good German prof, he's also versed in music & art. I've taken more than one subject from Ben & I recommend taking as much as you can with him. He's down to earth & easy to talk too, if you like to have fun & learn this is your guy. WCC is lucky to have him.
Ben is really fun and engaging. He keeps things interesting and is respectful of all student's viewpoints. His knowledge of all areas of Humanities is impressive. The best professor at Whatcom.
Ben Kohn is one of the most charismatic men on the face of this planet. He's a great teacher and class is genuinely fun. He also grades you partially on improvement since there's such a gap in students' knowledge in language class. I highly recommend anything ben teaches, not just German.
Fun prof. Easy tests if you study at all. I gave him a lower clarity rating only because he doesn't really give you specific guidelines on the final paper. He's very clear about everything else, including what will be on the tests. You can tell he really loves what he's talking about and that makes the class more enjoyable. Take his class. NOW!
He is a great guy and really funny, but not the best professor. His teaching style is easy, but he does a poor job explaining it and I for one got lost and fell behind because I did not understand what he was teaching. A great guy overall though.
He's a nice teacher, but he doesn't make the course challenging at all. It's a breeze, but I didn't learn as much as I wanted, and we didn't get through the book like he wanted to. It's fun, but not very helpful if you're serious about learning German.
BEST TEACHER I EVER HAD!!!! WHAT A HOTTIE! great experiences and always made the lesson fun! it was fantastic.
Ben is an amazing and passionate teacher. He can be a bit off-topic at times, but he is always entertaining and is focused on encouraging you to learn rather than obsessing about homework and structure. I highly recommend his classes.
Ben was a great professor; super helpful and it was an easy class. He was excited about the material and more interested in us learning and appreciating classical music than getting perfect test scores.
Ben=really great guy, He wasn't the best teacher. He doesn't explain everything as well as he could and forgets that people don't know the basics. He Didn't explain everything there was to explain and the textbook wasn't helpful. It's not a bad class but it's not useful if you really want to learn German.
Ben is passionate, easy to talk with, and relaxed. If you come to class wanting to learn German, you will learn it. Ask questions and he will answer anything--even during tests! It was refreshing to have such a casual but intelligent professor.
Ben is the best of the best. I had him for Humanities this previous quarter and he did an incredible job. His explanations are always clear and he has the gifted ability to make any subject very interesting. He even wrote me a letter of recommendation for my college application on extremely short notice. Take his class whenever possible.
I've had Ben for two German courses and World Music, and he's a fun teacher. Has a tendency to go off on tangents, but makes class interesting and is very helpful. If you want the easy 5 credits, take any classes that he teach!
Loved this teacher. He is crystal clear and knows his info.
Absolutely Wonderful teacher. Ben is extremely knowledgeable and held great class discussions. He's hilarious as well as informative, every thing i learned was beneficial. Very personable and cares a lot about his students and their success. I would highly recommend him for any class at Whatcom.
Absolutely loved this class! Ben is passionate and loves to get into detail without getting off track or overwhelming you. He has a sense of humor and likes to joke around in class, but knows when to be serious. A lot of learning word meanings from context clues and inference so pay attention when he talks. He helps you along though so it's not bad
Ben Kohn is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable of the German language, and he is always willing to answer ANY questions his students present to him, so if you are not understanding something don't hesitate to ask. He is also just an overall cool guy, he is hilarious and tries to make class fun. He can get on a tangents though but he is great
Ben is a really chill guy, and his class reflects that. It's really easy, and as long as you pay attention and study a little you will easily get at least a B. He has an awesome sense of humor, but you won't really learn a ton of German.
Ben is hilarious and you can tell he loves his job. Respects every student, and gives them opportunities to learn more. Only problem I've found with his class is it's mostly test based and I've only been able to really succeed when I have a lot of extra time to study, which is hard to find.
I absolutely love Ben Kohn. He truly cares about the success of each student and is also highly knowledgeable and culturally aware of his subject. 10/10 recommend for German!!
Ben Kohn was a great teacher! It's pretty easy to do well in his class as long as you do the few things he expects of you. He tends to go on tangents because (and you will see) of his passion for what he's teaching. He's hilarious and a really good teacher. Definitely recommend him!
Ben Kohn is funny and his lectures are interesting. He also is lenient with students on missing class if they have to, and his assignments are straightforward and not very difficult.
Ben has been a really great professor. He's extremely animated in lecturing and welcomes student participation and questions. this class wasn't test heavy and Ben seems to be very content oriented which I really enjoy and feel as though I actually learn more due to less test stress. really greatclass overall!
Ben is absolutely of my favorite professors by far! He is amazing and is always comical and optimistic in the darkest times. His class is fun, just show up and participate and everything will be fine! German is tough, but if you study one hour a day, you will pass with an A! I can promise you will not regret taking him for any courses!!
This class was a difficult class for me to want to go to. I felt the literature choices were not very interesting, and he talks the whole entire class. Its A LOT to take in. especially for 2 1/2 hours. Not on canvas so hard to know if things are due. Hes a really nice guy, just gets very distracted with his own ideas.
Probably the funniest and friendliest professor at Whatcom, he loves teaching and it shows. Tests aren't bad at all. Will talk about his Italian shoes every other lecture. Best thing to do for his class is not to stress out and have fun with it.
There are a lot of contents and readings you have to read, when asking questions, he couldn't be direct with it despite his feedback in one of my assignments when he stated "directly stating would've helped". Hypocrisy. It takes him a month or more to just grade one assignment (sometimes without feedback). Thought it was really interesting. Nah...
The content of this class wasn't hard per se, but the vague instructions sometimes made things difficult. There are SO many assignments for each week (lots of readings, had to write like 700 words), and he would randomly put out due dates in the beginning of the week. It felt really unorganized. In the last few weeks he started being more lenient.
Just need the credit? Take this class! Easy workload; two essay-ish assignments (~500 words), the rest were ~200 or less. Lots of reading involved in the beginning bc of this, but not much after, just watch films and respond. Creative Project (w video) can be on ANYTHING as long as you show EFFORT and GROWTH! Didn't grade until last days of quarter
Very knowledgeable, not a harsh grader because he'd rather you know the stuff than memorize things for test. Super funny and relatable. Xan tell stories without getting too off topic. Very enjoyable class, I'd definitely suggest taking a course with him!
Ben was a fantastic English 111 professor. He was an easy grader, and our grades mostly came from reading stories, answering questions, and having class discussions. However, grades were released only after the quarter ended. He took us to Seattle to watch a play and often brought snacks to class. Super funny and chill.
