Was skeptical first, but he was amazing. Really cares about students!
Very enjoyable teaching
Dr. Leipzig really does his best to relate to students and be realistic about what he expects them to learn. I appreciated his lecture style for 142, even though I was a little disappointed to not have Carroll. He is a good choice for the chem series - lectures are funny and engaging.
I was hesitant to take Chemistry 142 from Benjamin because I heard that he was a relatively new instructor. His abilities surpassed any expectations that I had held for professors at this University. I really appreciated his willingness to explain anything in detail and do so in a way that made the student feel comfortable and unashamed.
Despite being a new professor, ben is a great teacher and genuinely wants students to learn. he explains things in detail and always stops to check for questions. hes easy to talk to in office hours and is an entertaining lecturer. highly recommend
What a kind and approachable guy. I like how he's so dedicated to helping his students, he tries his best to help you understand (go to office hours). Like he will answer your emails and discussion questions and go through problems with you until you understand( I you reach out and go to office hours!) he's also a bit awkward but in the best way
Even though Ben is a relatively new professor, he is one of my favorite lecturers I've ever had. He puts genuine effort into making his slides and is a very funny and approachable guy. He tries his best to make sure everyone understands and is constantly available outside of class.
Ben is a great lecturer and he's very funny (in a unique way)!! All in all, HE'S A SKINNY LEGEND!!!!!!
Ben is a great teacher very approachable and doesn't try to make it seem like you're dumb if you don't know something. He's funny and he was really helpful with his formula sheets on the exam. He only tested on what was talked about in lecture. I definitely recommend taking him bc he tries hard to make sure the students understand so they can pass
Having Ben as a professor this quarter made the class so much more bearable. He's super patient with all questions (you could what 2 + 2 is and he'd still take the time to thoroughly explain) and keeps you engaged with all his jokes. The only frustrating thing is that he does go through slides rather quickly. OH and he has pollEverywhere
Prof. Leipzig was a ray of sunshine in the gloomy dungeon that is the chemistry department. He seemed to really genuinley care about student performance and made sure to answer questions and take feedback. His tests can be a bit long but the material was definitely fair and he provided ample material to prepare for tests. Great professor overall.
Dr. Leipzig is honestly a real gem to the Department of Chemistry! It is very clear that he is trying very hard to become a good professor for OUR (not his) good. He is very approachable and patient with his students, and genuinely wants us to learn. Also, his sense of humor is a real plus during lectures. He's your very solid choice for gen chem!
I wish he could have been my professor for every chem class in the series. He is a genuine professor who actually seems to care about my education and it translates through lecture. He has an arsenal of jokes ready to use during lecture and he makes the material easy to understand.
I am bewildered by the "amazing" reviews about Leipzig because he has poor pedagogy. He would often cover material that was not explained or practiced in class or worksheets. It is ridiculous of him to expect us to finish the entire exam when there are too many questions. Don't be fooled by the reviews that praise him as if he is a chemistry god.
honestly I didn't really like him. The way he writes his exam questions are really confusing and he is super strict about the grading criteria. Yes he's a good lecturer but I had to study like crazy just to get average and I wish I didnt take him. He made the class way harder than it should be cause 162 is honestly not hard at all
Great lecturer. He's funny and extremely charismatic. I also feel that he teaches the material well. This is easily the most engaged I've felt in a chemistry class. His tests are difficult but I think people are overreacting. It isn't hard to the point of frustration, I think his class just requires more effort than others.
He speaks slowly and he explains things well. He's really cool in my opinion, has this dry kind of humor that wakes you up in lectures. His tests are not very difficult- they're similar to the practices he give out. Wish I could take him again.
His lectures were really dry and he is extremely disorganized as a professor. YO can tell he really cares about his students and most of his test are pretty easy if you pay attention, it was just hard to succeed when he was not clear in what was expected of you due to his disorganization and lack of experience.
Try to stay away from Ben at all costs. I worked my butt off in this class, and probably did the most work I have ever done in a college class and was "rewarded" with a 2.4 when I did above average on both midterms as well as the final. The math did not add up when calculating my final grade. This tainted grade is now permanently on my transcript.
While I love Professor Leipzig as a person and lecturer, as my professor, he was a terrible tester and grader. I received above-average gpas in chem 142 and chem 152, but received an extremely low grade of 1.9 in chem 162 for doing slightly below average on the tests. OH THE TESTS - too long for the time given, and material is harder than taught.
Ben is hilarious and a great guy, and he cares about how much we learn but the problem is he's too new. Lectures have too much info that we don't need, and finding his resources can be a struggle as he's disorganized at times, making the class unnecessarily hard. Tests were a big time crunch and too vague. Take him when he's more experienced.
Has a very apparent "lecturing voice," but once you get used to it, he's a fairly decent teacher. DIdn't use the textbook. Use the review problems he gives instead of the practice test (because they're from other teachers and not at all reflective of your test). Sucked making decent test lengths, so go fast even if he says it'll be short.
Leipzig is a new teacher and so he hasn't figured out a foundation for the class. He knows his stuff which makes him a great lecturer but his exams are HARD. Test questions are all over the place, worded very weird and are way to long. I had to stay my ass off just to get average and I wouldn't take him again
Ben is definitely new. He has this iconic monotone voice at all times but his humor is actually pretty good. 162 sucks in general so having him in his first quarter teaching it was rough but he grades fairly. He is easy to talk to and will answer every question you have. Do all practice and redo quizzes religiously. It will pay off.
Leipzig is very new at teaching o-chem which makes it difficult for you to know his expectations for the class. Attending lectures was not very helpful, he read off the slides and did not give many example problems relevant to the test while lecturing. Be prepared to self-study the material a lot in his class if you want to succeed.
Leipzig was actually a really amazing teacher. Tests were a breeze if you prepared with all the work he gave out. Lectures were funny, and office hours were chill. Would easily take him again if I had a choice.
Ben is a pretty good professor. He doesnt make you read the textbook but recommends skimming over it. He can be kinda funny at times too which is a plus. Tests arent to bad, very similar to the practice tests which I enjoyed. I would defiantly take him again. I really enjoy his teaching style.
Leipzig is not everyone's cup of tea but me and a lot of other students really benefited from his quizzes in quiz section. He explicitly tells you what's on exams so just listen and you'll be fine. He is very funny and made lecture enjoyable as well as gave A TON of polling with a walk through of all answers which was very helpful.
Professor Leipzig really cares about O Chem and his students!!! I really liked his teaching style and when asked questions, gave thorough and detailed answers! The grades were the labs, Sapling HW, Poll Everywhere, and the exams (a lot like the practice exams). Completing the questions at the end of the txt book chapters covered in class helps :)
I really liked having Ben as my O Chem professor. He helped me understand the material really well and was super clear on what was on the tests. The practice questions/exams were exactly like the questions on the actual exams. He also made jokes occasionally that made me laugh. If he is your professor you are lucky!!
Polleverywhere occasionally for participation. Sometimes during lecture he would spend a lot of time on topics that weren't relevant for the exams and sometimes he would go through slides way too quickly. He was funny and nice and was always willing to clarify things regardless of how long it took.
Benjamin is very knowledgeable in chemistry but he's too advanced to teach general chemistry. He didn't explain a lot of the "basic" stuff well but he's very approachable outside class and is a sweetheart. He cracks jokes during lectures and you can miss 5 poll-everywhere and still get 100% on participation. Overall he's pretty chill.
Professor Liepzig understands the subject very well and his lectures help students learn the subject matter. However, these do not help students succeed on tests, which are unreasonably long, difficult, and impossible to complete in the time allotted. With an average student GPA of 2.6, this professor's courses should be taken at one's own risk.
Ben himself is quite a nice professor but the class itself will make you work. Lab reports and the ALEKS homework system are extremely frustrating at times and tests can be quite difficult in comparison to the material covered in class. All that being said, Ben explains his content well and is pretty funny. I didn't need a textbook at all.
He works hard to explain concepts, but only if asked, so make sure to ask questions. His tests are harder than hw, but that's because he wants you to understand the concepts. Try to understand what's happening in the situation he gives you and then start working through the problem. If you don't get it then reach out to him (email, office hours).
Though he is expert in his field, Dr. L has not developed a skill for teaching. He is helpful during office hours, but the class itself it just rote, laser-point lectures and won't prepare you to succeed at unreasonably long exams with content that bears no resemblance to what you've actually covered in class - huge risk of tanking your GPA.
I really enjoyed Ben's class. He seems to really care about his students and made my introduction to UW chem amazing. I would take his class again without a doubt.
Dr. Leipzig was very knowledgeable about what he was teaching and his lectures were overall pretty good. His occasional jokes definitely helped me stay awake at 8:30 am. The only thing I really didn't like about this class was that the tests were very challenging and long for the 50 min time period allotted.
Tests were really long. I remember one of the tests no one in the class finished. He doesnt check the tests before handing them out, so often times there are mistakes which makes it really frustrating when he doesnt clearly state the mistake and youre trying to rush through the test! I didnt have to show up to class much though! Hes nice.
Professor Leipzig is the reason I started liking chemistry again after the general series lol. You can tell that he's really passionate about the subject, and he also really cares about the students learning. His tests are really fair, so it's not hard to do well in the class if you put in the effort.
absolute rubbish professor.
He cares about his student's and genuinely makes sure that his student's understand the content.
terrible professor. have not met one student who likes him. he loves to give kids with 98% in the class 3.5s despite the class not supposed to be a weed out. also not very intelligent- asked him for help once and he was like oh its been a while since college ochem.... what? youre an ochem professor dude ? avoid if possible
Dry, boring lectures. We had 5 quizzes which were each worth 11% OF OUR FINAL GRADE. The information from the quizzes was not in the lectures (I attended every single lecture, discussion sections, do the readings, and the practice exams, and am still struggling!) He seems like a good person, but is NOT a good teacher. Would've taken another prof.
Professor Leipzig is alright. The quizzes we take are not unreasonable however I do feel like he does not inform/adequately prepare us for the questions he asks. Lectures are really dry and poorly structured, everything is usually pretty hard to connect and follow. For sure not the worst chem prof at the UW tho
I had Ben for Chem 143 & 237. He's a bit dry during his lectures but that just adds to his charm. A little unorganized (especially this quarter online) but he's the reason I came to class. Organic chemistry isn't easy and his tests are hard, but in the classes I've taken with him he's pretty generous with the grading curve at the end of the quarter
Ben was a pretty good professor. His slides aren't very organized but if you take the time to study, you should do well in his class.
Took the class during COVID. His lectures are pretty helpful, as is the textbook for learning info but not so much for the problems.
Took him in the fall for 142 and then in the spring (online) for 162. He gives clear lectures and tells you exactly what he expects you to know. No reason to use the textbook. Worksheets are helpful for preparing for tests. He's also a sweetie pie <3
Had him during COVID. Really good lecturer and good at answering people's questions and was very patient. He was also very considerate of everything that was going on and seemed easy to talk to. He's a pretty serious guy but every now and then he would crack a funny joke. Put in the work and you'll do fine.
powerpoints were organized but he just read off them, no deeper teaching and he had little enthusiasm. Gosh the tests were killer! Too many questions for 50min, and he acknowledged his fault to the class after the 2nd test but did nothing to rectify his mistake smh. This class was just mediocre teaching, killer tests and more stress from ALEKS.
Dr Leipzig is a very nice guy and he genuinely cares about his students. He is very accessible and very willing to help us out. Also, His grading is fair. The only thing that kind of bothers me it's that his talking speed is like *0.5, but I think he is just trying to be clear and hope everyone can catch up what he's talking about.
Ben's lectures were pretty dry, but he made it clear what content you needed to know for the tests and was always willing to answer questions. He wrote long tests that were sometimes difficult to finish in the allotted time, but they weren't terrible as long as you studied well. Overall I would say he's a pretty solid professor.
Dr. Ben is very patient and makes sure to answer all questions very well. His class is a joy to take
Ben for Chem143 isnt really the best teacher for this type of course. Although a caring person, he makes some of the content very confusing for no apparent reason. He does make the test longer than the given time making it impossible to finish. complained that too many people got a good score on a exam, proceeded to make the next exam very hard.
Chem 143 was not an easy class because we covered a lot of material in a short amount of time and because Ben's tests were long and difficult. But, he answers questions well and it's clear that he cares about the students' understanding. Overall, I would not recommend this class for students who do not have any background in chemistry.
I had this professor for chem110. He is not my favorite. Although he gave us a lot of homework but they are not hard as long as you follow the instructions on ALEKS.
I am disappointed by my experience in this class, with this professor in particular. Students read the textbook, watch the lectures, and do the worksheets and end of chapter problems, but don't get the grade they deserve. Why? Because there is a massive amount of cheating happening in the gen chem series online and prof. doesn't care. hard quizzes.
The people complaining about Prof Leipzig obviously did not have my chem 152 professor last qtr because Leipzig is 1000x better. His lectures (although boring) are clear and easy to understand. As long as you go to class, take notes, and do the practice problems, the quizzes are very fair, but I do agree that I'm always pressed for time.
Ben is really nice and caring, hes accessible and his office hours are helpful. He gives very clear outlines of what will be on the quiz. Worksheets are only helpful to an extent. Quizzes are hard which is why people are rating badly, but honestly what do you except from a chem weed out? Grades/difficulty are comparable to other genchem classes.
WORST PROFESSOR IN THE HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY. STOP saying that he is a good professor, since he is not. he wants to make quizzes challenging, but he doesn't teach us what shows up on the quiz. the cheaters are winning, so he needs to STOP it with the HARD, HARD quizzes that are impossible to complete in 1 hours. life ruiner. TERRIBLE! DON'T TAKE.
Lepizeg doesn't recognize that mental health is a thing for students as well. His teaching style is terrible and makes hard quizzes that are worth more than half your grade. He is a very rude, arrogant professor. Take Robinson or someone else instead who knows how to teach chem and test their students. not worth the headache & preserve your GPA.
DON"T Take this class taught by this professor. professor and TAs grade quizzes harshly and don't give any points back. I was taking quizzes in groups until they kicked me out--so unfair. only the elite can succeed! Hire a tutor to take the quiz for you because this is what he wants.
uncompetent professor don't take enjoys suffering and hard quizzes!
Professor Leipzig is one of the better chem professors I have had during the gen chem series. Compared to my 152 professor he does a much better job of going through the concepts but you still need to work outside of class in order to fully understand. He is very accessible, kind, and makes sure that his students can ask questions if needed.
I have been through the gen chem series with professors who were better. I think that leipzig cares about his but he is also a harsh grader. Tests are difficult especially because he made them longer mid quarter. The curve will kill you. 88 percent at a 2.9? Ridiculous. Not the worst but wouldn't say he's someone worth fighting for on registration.
As long as you're willing to put in the work and actually study, it isn't impossible to succeed in this class. Professor Leipzig explains concepts very thoroughly and provides sufficient practice material for quizzes. He explains exactly what is and what isn't going to be on the quiz. Genuinely a great professor.
I was shocked by the negative reviews. Yes, the tests are challenging and the timing is hard, but it is in no way an impossible class. We are provided all the materials we need to succeed with lots of office hours, practice problems, worksheets, and he even lets us know the topics that will be covered on quiz. Dont be scared off, you will be fine!!
DISAPPOINTMENT! DONT do this to yourself you guys. Really hard curve even with accurate calculations 85% was a 2.4 gpa. Super tough curve and hard TA graders. One question missed -3.0 and question was out of 2 points! Dont take this professor especially online. Also rude with answering question during class dont do it
DONT do this to yourself. Better off never taking. Chemistry
My friend and I are going to need to drop this class because of the difficult curve most likely. He is a bad professor for many reasons. He doesnt know how to teach and explain problems over zoom. Since the beginning his lectures were confusing and so were his office hours. Exams/quizzes graded super harshly with no points for leeway. TERRIBLE.
He was a little bit confusing in the 2 non-mandatory live classes I went to but I understood all the content just from the pre-lecture videos, aleks, and worksheet. The tests can be pressing for time and he likes to use small detail tricks. He sends a list of topics and amount of questions on tests. The worst part of this class was the curve.
Any chem class at UW is challenging, so expect to really work for a good grade. With Leipzig, the tests were an accurate reflection of what was taught in lecture/ALEKS. While his explanations can be confusing, I felt like he tried his best to answer your question, even if it took multiple tries. A solid choice, one of the better profs for chem.
Terrible professor. Worst professor ive ever had. Doesnt teach properly and scribbles on the board. Dont ever take is my advice
Ive never had such a negative experience with a chemistry professor. Explains simple concepts in a confusing way. What he states we dont need to know actually comes up on the exams and quizzes/ the people that did well had hired tutors on campus and cheated their way through the chemistry series. Surprising that he did nothing and didnt care
Tests were not an accurate reflection of what was seen in Aleks/lecture. Lecture styles was super poor and week, and did not give us any guidance on what to read in the textbook for pre-information before the textbook. He answered questions in a way that confused me even more. Someone needs to TEACH THE TEACHERS HOW TO TEACH!! And listen.
Get ready to read the textbook and for no help from this professor whatsoever. Took the entire chemistry series and this has to be worst professor throughout the series. I wouldnt recommend this professor to anyone who wants to learn the material or earn the grade they deserve. Supports cheaters throughout the series and NOT A PROFESSOR..
A saving grace in the Chem department at UW. By far the most clear and fair professor I had through the gen chem series. Pretty obvious his job is to just teach chem and is a pretty serious guy, but as a student discouraged heavily by the series, all I was looking for was a solid professor and that was definitely achieved.
I'm very surprised by all the negative reviews. Prof Leipzig was the best prof I had in the gen chem series. He posted plenty of resources for students on canvas and had both pre recorded videos as well as live lectures we could attend. In my opinion, he went above and beyond to help us succeed. The quizzes and exams weren't hard if you studied.
Not a good experience. Dont take this Professor if you want to actually have a life and do something outside of chemistry. Absurd quizzes and promoted widespread cheating in the class and so did the TA.
Great lab teacher. Makes sure to go around and make sure you are doing it correctly and has you understand what you are doing which challenges your thinking! He responds to emails pretty fast and wants to help. He can be a tough grader but his office hours are very helpful and clear!
As other people have said, Ben is the savior of the Chem department. I would recommend that everyone takes Ben's class. He does a great job of pacing slides so you have enough time to write down the information. He is a relatively new teacher and so his teaching style is very simple and easy to understand and offers alternate explanations.
The only thing you have to worry about are the 4 quizzes and the final. Make sure you're studying well and use practice problems b/c multiple choice questions are really hard. But 2 of the quizzes were pretty easy.
Best gen chem prof I've ever had! Ben is very straightforward with the content you need to know for his quizzes (4 biweekly quizzes total, lowest dropped) and final, and has good explanations for material that may be harder to digest. Overall he is very understanding and a very fair grader. Definitely pay attention to lecture practice problems!
Ben is by far the best chem professor for the basic 1X2 series. All of his lectures were interesting and he was very good as explaining hard concepts. There are four quizzes and a final, but one quiz is dropped and there is a detailed powerpoint on question breakdowns and expectations before each. Honestly the best professor I've had so far.
An excellent professor - his explanations of the final gen chem concepts as well as introductory organic chem were clear and questions were welcomed. The structure of smaller quizzes and a final made for a better understanding of the material as well as a better grade.
Definitely the best chem professor I've had this year. The quizzes and final can be kind of difficult but he gives you a detailed powerpoint of what you need to know. His explanations were pretty good and the examples he does in class are helpful. The quizzes free response is graded pretty nicely too. Overall best chem class I've taken.
Overall, a good professor. Gives straightforward and understandable lectures, and quiz content was expected, fair, and not overtly weed-outy (except for the final). I'm not sure he'd be the best for CHEM142, but for higher level courses, he's a good option.
Dr. Leipzig is a phenomenal professor! His lectures contain most, if not all, of the information needed for the exams. Although his exams are challenging, they are extremely fair. I would most definitely recommend him!
The CHEM 162 series is hard as is, but Leipzig made the class fun. He cracked jokes and made the tests difficult but wanted you to learn. Honestly he has been my favorite professor in the gen chem series. The key to getting through the tests are doing practice problems out of the textbook and going over worksheets !
Prof Leipzig makes chem238 not that hard. All of materials on the exam cover in his lecture. My experience going to his office hour is really great. He cares every question students have.
Expect this to be the most difficult 100-level class you take; do expect homework during breaks. Dr. Leipzig is very passionate about chemistry and cares about his students. The key to doing well in this class is using ALEKS as much as possible. the class consists of Pre labs, Labs, and ALEKS. Abt 5-6 hours of Homework per week
Ben gives good lectures but always seems to behind on his schedule, making the students learn information that was half-taught, half ran through. Weed out class, very heavy in tests (we had 4 'midterms' (it's not a midterm when its every two weeks) and a final).
The professor was enthusiastic and organized. Chemistry material is originally complex but he explained it throughout for beginners. Communicating is very good, always respond to our questions quickly and clearly. Your grade depends on your effort and former knowledge in Chem before this class. Def rcm
More work than other 142 sections but worth it! Dr. Leipzig is very approachable and gives clear answers fast. He's enthusiastic about chemistry and his students having solid fundamental knowledge. Lectures are paced well and test material is based of lecture slides and includes MC and short answers - great for partial credit. Would take again!
I can guarantee that you will learn a lot of chemistry knowledge because the exams are hard and there is quite the amount of online homework. Regardless the tests can be studied for and the homework can be finished. What cannot be helped is the "curve". It does absolutely nothing and it might not even bring your grade up. Would not recommend!
Professor Leipzig doesn't curve individual exams but the quarter grade. His exam is usually hard, so don't stress about your grades. His lecture is fast-paced right before exams. I would highly recommend watching recorded videos since sometimes he is not explaining things clearly or spent too much time answering people's questions in class.
I took OCHEM223 (ochem 2-quarter series) with Ben, and he was fantastic. Although ochem is difficult, Ben's lectures are straightforward and exams and very similar to our homework. Ben is also very accessible and holds many office hours. He's very approachable and great at teaching this material. Highly recommend!
It really jyst does not feel like Dr. Leipzig cares about his teaching. His lectures were just reading off of slides adding nothing, ALEKs takes hours of your time every week and doesn't often feel related to coursework, and the only way to feel remotely ready for tests is many extra hours of your own work put in outside of his coursework.
I love him so much. I had him in 162, and wanted him for 237 and 238 but it didn't work with my schedule. I went to his office hours for 238 once and he was better than the prof I had in the class. Best teacher I've had. He explains things with the right amount of detail (other chem profs where either too detailed in explanation or not enough).
Professor Leipzig was AMAZING. He is easy to access outside of class. I'm not even in his class anymore and sometimes knock on his door for help in CHEM 237. Lectures and homework reflect the exams. Office hours are underrated. Prof Leipzig WILL put in as much time needed to make sure concepts are drilled into your head if you ask a question.
Actually took chem223 (ochem short program), professor was super kind and definitely did his best to make sure that everyone understood the very difficult material. He is very helpful during office hours and has a good hw system that made me feel like I was actually learning and getting sufficient credit for my learning.
Leipzig exams are hard but pretty fair. His exams are nothing like his previous exams because he always tries to create new questions. His exam questions aren't easy because he tries to combine multiple concepts together. Textbook isn't required and mostly used as a supplement for extra practice. My best advice is to PRACTICE as much as you can.
Leipzig is a good professor, and teaches well considering the difficulty of the content. However, his tests can be difficult, and do not come with complete practice midterms/finals. His office hours are helpful though, and he is always willing to answer questions and explain in detail. Overall a good professor for a hard class.
Dr Leipzig was one of my favorite professors I've ever had at UW despite OCHEM being my hardest class. He is a great lecturer with very fair homework and tests that match with what we've been learning in class. He has office hours and wants them to succeed, he's not trying to weed anyone out despite it being a STEM class. Highly recommend!
He is just bad at teaching. Please take Barrows for the whole series. His lectures are just so bad, he reads off of slides, posts extra videos that kinda suck too. I haven't done his test yet but looking at his practice tests, I think they are pretty bad. Just overall course is bad with this man. Try your best to get Barrows.
3 exams(two 18% and one 11%) + final (30%). Didn't need the textbook for the entire quarter because his lectures had all the material you would need for the exams. Exam average was 70-60% For this quarter any grade above 90% was a 4.0. Homework every Tuesday and Friday. The downside is that the lecture is fast, so rewatching is recommended
I can honestly say that he is the worst chem professor that exists. We basically taught ourselves and he can't be negotiated with and won't offer help. I would've preferred waiting another quarter than to have taken this class with him.
I could understand the materials very easily. He is really good at giving lectures and is always willing to answer any questions we had. Final was pretty easy as well. Write thoughtful lab reports, understand the material, and maybe a little bit of memorization of procedures and the materials required for the final.
He was very straight forward when it came to lectures which I appreciate a lot as my 237 professor was ambiguous with the content that was lectured. He is also very caring and has a humor which made me feel a lot more comfortable asking him for help. He is very accessible as his office is right in the study center. Take Dr. Leipzig if you can!!!!
After finishing the sequence Professor Leipzig was easily the most challenging professor I've had. It was his first q teaching 239 and he gave 1 practice exam of his own (after we had to ask for one) so we never saw what his exams would be like - which resulted in averages in the 40-50s on all 4 exams because he made them unreasonably difficult.
DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON GETTING AN "A" IN THE CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!
OChem gets an unjust bad rap(I'm a bad student so you know I'm not just saying that in an annoying way) Ben makes difficult material manageable. Talks at a snails pace --> 2x recordings are perfect you don't make it to lecture. Very little homework. He's good at rephrasing thing when asked. Hard class but if you keep up and study you'll be alright
I was scared to take this class (I failed gen chem lol) but his lectures go over everything you need to know for exams, exam content is also clearly outlined, I didnt even need to buy the textbook. lecture is not mandatory and recorded. would recommend rewatching lectures leading up to exams in 2x. solid professor for a notoriously hard subject
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I have learned a lot but it is insanely hard and I am a chemistry major.
Professor Leipzig is a brilliant professor. Organic chemistry is an extremely difficult subject and many people find it very challenging.. Leipzig's lectures are very straight forward and his explanations of concepts are clear. That being said, make sure you understand at least the basics of what is going on BEFORE LECTURE. Makes life easy.
Dr.Leipzig is so great. He's so nice and you can tell he wants students to have a good attitude about chemistry. His tests can be challenging (and long), and he keeps retrosynthesis and NMR on each test. At first I thought it was annoying, but it does prepare you and force you to understand the material. I think he's the best chem prof I've had.
Leipzig is a very nice and caring professor. He clearly cares about the subject a lot and practice tests are provided, but his lectures are mostly unhelpful. Almost everything I learned in the class was through the textbook and other online sources even though I payed full attention in lecture. Some topics are just very confusing.
Professor Leipzig is awesome. He kept up with ed discussion questions and answered them sometimes minutes after they were posted. Incredibly accessible given his office is literally in the OCSC, and you can walk in with questions whenever his door is open. His lectures were clear with occasional jokes with the straightest face imaginable.
Leipzig is kind, understanding, and funny, and he teaches organic chemistry very well. Exams were challenging but reasonable, and were very similar to lecture/homework problems (no trick questions or curveballs). Lectures move fast, so be ready to take notes.
Dr. Leipzig is fantastic. He always encourages students to go to office hours and is available for extra help even outside of office hours. He also has clear expectations and will let students know what topics will and will not be on an exam. As long as you pay attention, make an effort, and utilize your resources, you will be fine in this class.
He's your best bet with all of the chem professors. Tests are generous and he sometimes even tells you what the short answers will be on. If you have the option to take him do it!! I cannot stress that enough as he makes such a difficult subject somewhat bearable.
He is better than Craig, Barrows, and Maibaum by far. Makes the content very interesting, tells you what content the short answer questions on exams cover, and does not try to trick you. Office hours are a great resource. Lots of homework and some of it is not related to lecture
I was hesitant going into his class based on other the experiences I had with other top professors like craig and maibaum. I would say that he is decent and really caring and making sure you will succeed. I like how he gave us practice exams unlike the other professors.
Benjamin was an alright professor. His lectures were kind of boring and slow paced. I feel like it was hard for him to break down the material onto a level that students can understand, but overall he did try his best. Not the worst professor but also nothing made him stand out. Sorry Ben :(
Professor Leipzig keeps the lectures engaging with occasional jokes. Exams are challenging but fair, focusing on key concepts. Unstuck AI was a game-changer for study prep - highly recommended alongside the textbook.
Extremely monotone, not a great lecturer, and a bit rude. Forget exactly what grade I received but it definitely wasn't good, which is fine in and of itself, but the terrible lectures and uncaring attitude really didn't do much to help.
Prof. Leipzig may be the hardest working prof. at UW. he is always accessible, very clear on his expectations, and an overall amazing and caring guy. This is a very tough class but he made it bearable. I wish him the best in his future, he is one of the best pros. I have had.
tbh, kinda meh. His lectures are content-packed, but he goes over exam-type questions together, and there's lots of helpful info on the slides. Go to his OH!! work with other students on the homework too (of which are long and sometimes confusing). Deadpan genx humour. Sometimes explains concepts well, sometimes glosses over it. mid prof ig
