You had better enjoy Homer's writings, or else you're in trouble.
Very intimidating and hard to follow.
Very knowledgable and does a good job
Grades harsher than some (you have to EARN an A). He knows the material.
Somewhat unreasonable at times, but overall enjoyable. Worth having him.
Very knowledgable and helpful. Tests and papers are tough though
He really knows his stuff. He expects you to as well. Not easy.
Very knowledgible, and willing to work with you. Hard grader though, expects alot
Overall good prof. Very stubborn, however, and doesn't take students to heart.
BAIL while you can! Worked my butt off on papers & grades weren't good, hard cla
class got annoying and he doesn't understand the basic concepts of thermodynamic
Great Professor/knows his stuff/interesting to listen to!/Funny.
Get out now or you will regret it
Very good prof. Hard grader, but very helpful.
hard grader, but a very good prof. Really enjoys literature and it shows.
Really helpful guy. Interesting and funny. But he's sure a hard grader.
excellent prof, you'll learn an extensive amount of information. loves his work
Such a hrad grader but a nice guy. Very full of himself though
Rather elitist and arrogant. Needs to learn humility.
Great teacher, very funny, read assignments and you'll do fine
nice guy, hard grader!
Very enjoyable teacher, willing to help, great sense of humor.
Nice man, but misdirects his fatherly advice. needs an open mind to other views.
HARD GRADER; talk to him outside of class and he'll give lots of help. Fave prof
Great guy. Ridiculously intelligent. Cares for his students.
Keeps class interesting. Read the assignments! You have to know them very well for the tests!! Tough grader, but funny guy.
Not a very easy grader, but really cares about his students. Is willing to provide a lot of outside help. A good heart indeed.

He is a tough grader but, he does it to make his students strive to be better. It might have helped if I enjoyed Shakespeare. Regardless, Lockerd is cool; his humor is awesome. He's the kinda guy you could go to the bar with to have a beer.

Best professor I have ever had. Period. Really hard, but reasonably so. Demands the best from his students, super-nice guy, excellent sense of humor, absolutely brilliant. Totally cares about his students, and will bend over backwards to help.
Honors making of europe rocked bc of him. He is the sweetest most caring prof I have had so far. The class was tough but hey it was honors.
thinks hes funny but isnt. not lenient on anything. does not understands others problems or life views. would not purposely take him again
good professor. made the readings more interesting. very nice guy.
It's a very hard if you haven't had much Shakespeare before, but he is very helpful if you ask for it.
What a jerk! If he actually shows up for his office hours, he makes comments on papers like "oh, it's coming along nicely" with no suggestions for improvement, yet still gives a low grade. Ridiculous amount of memorization required for exams. H
He gives his students a good challenge, and if you're in college to learn, that's the greatest thing a professor can do. He also cares about the subject he teaches, and he is very helpful if you ask for help.
The hardest grader I have ever encountered and I'm a senior. Everything he makes to seem important in class is no where to be seen on his tests. He likes to give out many C's D's and F's in his class. Nice guy but expects the impossible.Don't take him!
Very down to earth. Helps a lot if you are sincere. Loves his job. Cares about students and learning in general. Of course it is wicked hard - it is honors.
Good guy, interesting class... Ask to perform everything. Skip midterm... I don't know man. ONE BAD THING: Always late. Easily persuaded. Quote "I like Lockard a lot." Very funny. Underline every passage he mentions-- those will be on test
favorite professor, hands down...challenging, funny, nice, great guy. take him if you are willing to be challenged
A class full of memorization. Prof = POMPOUS
A little too eager and happy to help. Tries hard to get his class involved--don't take this class if you don't like class discussion or doing outside class activities!
The morons who rip on him are stupid and lazy. He is the best--and hardest--professor ever.Challenging, completely helpful, brilliant. NEVER late for class, and ALWAYS available on office hours. He is too good for West Michigan. Belongs at Harvard.
The guy isn't a bad teacher, but whenever he gets excited about something his voices jumps about 3 octaves. Sounds like he's still going through puberty. Psycho crazy about Christianity. It's all he talks about, and is freakishly conservative. Personality is just not very good, otherwise he's ok.
This guy is a very good professor. He is exicted about the subject matter and really gets into the lectures. I enjoyed when he was teaching.
Oh, Prof. Lockerd. What to say? He's very very conservative and this leaks into his lectures a lot, but it's not unbearable. He's really smart, can be funny, and really cares - but maybe a bit too much. You HAVE to meet with him for every paper, which is frustrating if you have a busy schedule. Don't slack on papers.
Very knowledgable. Embodies Shakespeare in a way. I would not take this class with any other professor! He also has a great sense of humor and a great personality. Get to know him, but more importantly take his class! He has really awesome insight into Shakespeare, asks great questions and gives great feedback!
Professor Lockerd is a friggin' genius. I learned so much about Shakespeare in his class and he really sparked my interest. Hilarious, even though he is intimidating at first, but has a great sense of humor. Makes the class very enjoyable.
Great prof. Finds amazing insights into literature and makes you find and appreciate them. Very friendly and enjoyable. Best prof I've had.
You'll get along with him if you want another father...
Not bad, not great.
Lockerd transcends the stereotypes, whatever yours may be. He his hilarious, has a sense of humor about himself, literally laughs at himself. His insight into the material is phenomenal. He will help you with topics and loves discussion. I am a science major, and he inspired me to switch to English, even if it was just for a few days.
Very fun to listen to. Makes class go fast. Also, friendly.
I respect this man more than most. He is very understanding and forgiving, but very stern. He called my bluff when I wasn't trying my hardest, and although I initially was angry, I am very greatful for saving me from my bad habits. He will help you greatly if you are willing to help yourself. Good professor, great person.
I love Professor Lockerd as a teacher and as a person. Very concerned with our health (told the class to get more SLEEP), very nice, concerned with progress, etc. Looking forward to 3 more semesters with this teacher! :) Take honors if you can and get into this humanities sequence! Really highly recommend!
One word to describe him - AMAZING! One of GVs finest by far!
Professor Lockerd actually makes literature interesting. He shows other points of view about a piece and helps the class to understand the author's true meaning. He is also very funny and quotable. He is very knowledgable about literature in general. He may be a hard grader, but he is still an amazing teacher. I have him for Euro Civ.
Dr. Lockerd is the fatherly type figure for our civ sequence. This man is passionate about what he teaches, knows his stuff and throws questions and topics at us that make us purposely think outside our boxes. I am looking forward to 2 more semesters with him especially after reading the Divine Comedy by Dante. I'd recommend him to anyone. :)
Amazing teacher, interesting lectures, funny, cares about his students. Tough grader, but always willing to help you understand your weaknesses and improve them. I would definitely recommend him--one of my favorite professors
funny guy, but not very clear about his expectations - took as a gen ed... don't expect a good grade unless you are an amazing writer and have all of shakespeares work memorized.
A very conservative, Christian sensibility, but don't let that turn you off. He's intelligent, entertaining. Very tough, but worth taking. Your writing, philosophical, and critical thinking skills will improve greatly if you seek him out.
Awesome prof. Makes class enjoyable and fun. He's a tough grader, but in the end, he makes you a much better writer. Very understanding and approachable. Really a father-like figure. Make sure to have him read over your papers before turning them in. He's very critical, but don't take it personally. Definitely one of my favorite profs!
Funny! Knows how to lighten up a hard class. Likes to have fun, but knows his stuff and can expect a lot from his students. I would recommend him to anyone who isn't afraid of a little work, it's worth it!
I took the Making of Europe Honors class, and I thought Prof. Lockerd was the most interesting, easy-going, and clear of the four teachers. I didn't think his grading was at all hard, and I found him to be very helpful.
TAKE HIM!!!! He's amazing, and he cares so much. Will work with you to get the grade you want. Knows his stuff, funny, and upbeat. Dad-like. Great guy!
Dr. Lockerd is a very interesting professor and can be quite funny. However, I found him to be somewhat disorganized in running our civ sequence. He also frequently gives pop quizzes over the reading while none of the other profs for the sequence do. I also find him to be intimidating and arrogant. Overall, he is an okay professor.
He knows this subject inside-out. Lockerd has high expectations but is always willing to help you. The lectures were a little dry someone (I took a 6-9), but he is really funny and a great guy. Take a class with him!
Dr.Lockerd knows what he is talking about. He can be a little old fashioned in his gradings and assignments though (we had to do a final paper and an exam). Be prepared to read a lot and attend rather disorganized classes. But he managed to get my interest and I don't regret taking his class.
My experience with Dr. Lockerd was and continues to be the best I've had with any educator. He's not an idiot-- in fact, he's brilliant-- so he's not going to let you coast through the semester. However, the challenging nature of the course exercises your critical thinking skills and holds you accountable, and isn't that the point of higher ed?
Lockerd is a really nice guy. Very helpful during his office hours while working on papers. Very clear speaker and his knowledge on TS Eliot is remarkable. Tries to keep classes light and interesting. Pretty tough grader on papers.
Professor Lockerd is super smart and I enjoyed the subject matter of his lectures. Most of the time he's awkward in a Dad type of way, but occasionally makes insensitive comments and might make a jab at you. The lectures were interesting and he does a great job of explaining things. Be prepared for pop quizzes on reading.
I like this teacher as a person. He is nice, tries to be funny, and is very smart. He tries but his class is boring. He talks all hour to you, instead of making it a discussion with the whole class participating. Basically, just write what he wants you to, and check your grammar well for papers. He does passage IDs for tests too, so read!
Lockerd is funny and interesting. He made Shakespeare more interesting for me. Only three papers, with one a research paper based off of paper 1 or 2 (your choice). Midterm and final included. Lots of reading but just knowing the plot points is essential.
This is the second time I have taken a class with Professor Lockerd. After having him for Shakespeare, I took Major Authors: T.S. Eliot and learned a ton! His teaching style is very conversational; he really explains everything well and makes it interesting regardless of your knowledge or interest prior to the class. I would definitely recommend!
Doing the reading is a MUST as you will occasionally be given pop quizzes. He likes to run his lectures in a discussion format, so it helps to have a couple talking points going in. He responds to enthusiasm and preparation. He sometimes singles out students that haven't done the reading and teases them: if you don't want that to be you, READ!
Dr. Lockerd is an incredibly knowledgeable individual and perfect for an honors course. Unfortunately, if you are shy, he can be intimidating because he calls on students randomly. If you don't participate in class, he may poke fun at you in front of others, which can be embarrassing. The final exams are also way too long for the time allotted.
Lockerd is understanding of the heavy course load of engineering students that are also in the honors college at GVSU. He is a really funny guy, but is also intelligent and able to get through course material. He expects you to read, and there is definitely a lot of reading. Also, overall a really cool guy.
If you want to spend your time looking at Catholic interpretations of Shakespeare, this class is for you. If you are slightly progressive, I would advise you to look somewhere else. Constant half-funny / off-putting remarks. Besides from that, there is rarely open-minded discussion, but rather Lockerd talking about his favorite lines.
He's a very nice guy, but honestly only offers up one interpretation of the plays (religious) and then makes people feel like if they were raised Catholic they're the "good kids." Very good about emailing you back, though, and if you email him a copy of your paper beforehand he'll give you comments on it. But I would not take him again.
Lockerd is one of the better choices for Honors professors at GV. He has a great sense of humor and does what he can to make his lectures interesting and engaging. He does recognize the amount of work involved in honors and engineering, but that said, he absolutely expects you to read and study - he has little sympathy for slackers.
Lockerd is incredibly knowledgeable and attempts to make lectures funny and engaging. He's sympathetic to students, as he recognizes the amount of work involved in Making of Europe, but he still expects you to do the work and pull your weight. If you put the time in and get to know him, he'll be an invaluable asset.
Dr. Lockerd assigns a lot of reading and expects you to read it closely. He calls on people who don't participate. He has a good sense of humor, though his lectures can get a little boring. His tests have passage IDs, so know the reading inside out. He gives solid feedback on papers. Responsive to email. Effort is definitely required for his class.
Professor Lockerd is a fine person, but that's about where it stops. The class is entirely based around his opinions of the plays, and he is not willing to budge on his interpretations, so make sure you agree with everything he says. There's only a few grades in the whole class, and if you want to do well on the exams you have to go to class.
Prof Lockerd is a nice guy, he cares about how you are doing, and is accessible outside of class. He can be pretty funny too. To succeed you do need to go, he gives random quizzes on the readings, so make sure that you read too. He does understand the amount of work you get in college, so at times he'll remove some things off the schedule.
