Sarcastic. SARCASTIC. Brilliant. HOTTY. Dresses really well. Helpful office hours, explains life and everything else. Gives pizza. Tough but fair. PowerPoints are INTENSE. He puts a lot of effort into the class. The readings aren't too long. Taught me a lot. Professor Meier cares about the success of his students.
easily the best professor at UNC. Never have I encountered a professor who has been more helpful, caring and truly loves teaching. I want to take another class by Dr. Meier because he is just that amazing!
Great Professor and mentor. Challenging. Thought provoking. Supportive of career goals. Extremely knowledgeable on variety of topics. Always available for further help on course material or other student interests.
Professor Meier is, in a word, extraordinary.
Didn't have a TEXT book, but the readings were EXTREMELY important to the lectures and class overall. Meier is a wonderful teacher, mentor, and adviser. He's there to help you succeed both in AND out of the classroom. He even gives you tissues if you cry. I have not had a better Professor...NEVER.
Best Professor at UNC. He isn't the easiest grader but he will teach you everything you need to know and he makes the class extremely interesting.
phenomenal individual that cares about his material, students, and making the world a better place through 1+2. do readings, participate in class, accept that he's a little wacky sometimes. go with the flow, ask questions, engage, go to office hours - you'll get a great education, a mentor, and a friend out of it.
Impeccable teaching skills with a flare for the theatrical and an incessant love of musicals. He's been my favorite professor at UNC and I have been able to take what I've been taught in his class and apply it. I'm so glad to have had him as a professor and as a friend...because I knew you, Dr. Meier, I have been changed for good.
He is a wonderful professor, though unconventional. Engaging, passionate, cares a great deal about his students, and always willing to meet with students when they need help, are seeking advice or just want to talk.
Professor Meier gave me my first "Carolina experience" in the classroom. He was inspiring, hilarious, dedicated, and quite fond if not obsessed with musicals/theatre/dance. This class is difficult, but worth the extra work and time. Meiers is always there to help if needed and has very helpful office hours (go to them, go to ALL of them).
An excellent introduction to the international human rights framework and international law relating to health. Also fedoras, suits, and being fabulous. You'll learn a lot about all of those things too. Dr. Meier cares deeply about what he teaches, and you should absolutely take his class before you leave UNC.
Absolutely one of my best Carolina experiences. It's such a treat to be taught by a professor that is truly passionate about the subject matter, and I feel lucky to have learned about such an important topic in this manner. I can't recommend this course highly enough--you will work hard, but it will be good for you (promise).
Great class! So much fun. Between the music and references, the topic and the stories, I'm not sure you can find a better class. Though at times the content wasn't my favorite, Meier always was, and it was a pleasure to come to class every day.
Meier truly was excellent. The class wasn't easy by any means (and the material is a tad dry in and of itself), but the instructor truly made it worthwhile. Obsession with musicals was a bit confusing. One of the most caring professors I've had at UNC. Will challenge you, but will cheer you on. Seriously take a class with him - you won't regret it.
The class was very interesting! Professor Meier did an amazing job at explaining human rights in a global health context! After taking this class you will find your passion in the global health field!!
Professor Meier cares deeply about his students. He is passionate about the subject matter and he injects so much enthusiasm into every lecture. Professor Meier is also always available to answer questions about material covered in class or to chat about the passions and career interests of his students.
Prof. Meier is AMAZING! He is absolutely HILARIOUS, incredibly smart, and cares about students! He makes himself extremely available and offers a lot of help with achieving your professional goals (preparing for interviews, contacts). His lectures are really interesting. He also bakes cookies and even made us an ice sculpture! Take this course!
Absolutely fedorable, I'm a huge admeierer.
Absolutely amazing. Puts so much effort into what could easily be a very dry course. Go to office hours if you have any questions, or if you don't- go anyway. Very inspiring and extremely helpful to students if you put in some effort to connect with the material.
Meier's class is not easy, but is incredible. The content is really eye-opening and he makes it so interesting to learn. This is the one class that I have always been excited to go to. I highly encourage everyone to take it.
Best class I've taken at Carolina. Professor Meier makes you want to come to class and do well. He doesn't post lectures, and he takes an attendance grade, so going to class is important. Luckily, his lectures are a lot of fun. He is hands-down the most upbeat, fabulous, and caring professor I've had at Carolina.
Not many opportunities to receive a grade so focus on the midterm, exam, and essay or you can risk slipping. Professor Meier is incredibly compassionate, communicative, and witty. (And he knows it). He is wonderful and worth getting to know in office hours. Much singing, many photos, a good time had by all.
Professor Meier is the greatest professor I have had at UNC. He cares greatly about his students and their success well beyond the classroom. He is passionate about teaching and global health policy, and it shows in the time and dedication that he puts into each and every lecture. He's truly someone that will inspire you to "don't stop believin'".
If justice, musicals, dancing, and fabulous powerpoints are your fancy, then this is the class for you! The class is tough and expectations are high, but Meier is great and will provide MORE THAN ENOUGH opportunities to get help. You should attend all lectures and Meier keeps them interesting and engaging, so you won't get bored!
By far one of the best classes & professors at UNC. Prof. Meier's passion & dedication to human rights & all health issues is evident in his savvy lectures, publications, & detailed feedback. He challenges every student to think about human rights, the UN system, & its role in tackling global health issues from various perspectives. Great class!!!
Professor Meier is without a doubt not only one of the best professors at UNC, but all around one of the best individuals within Chapel Hill. His passion for health and human rights permeates into the brains of every student that has a pleasure to be in his class, whether you want it to or not. Get ready to be indoctrinated in the best way possible
Prof. Meier has the unique ability to turn something typically dry (i.e. Ethics courses) into something not only interesting, but applicable outside UNC. His upbeat, bright personality makes coming to class a pleasure. Sure to keep you entertained & motivated (including special office hours "Late Night With Meier.") Not bad on the eyes either...
Professor Meier is WAAAAY overqualified to be teaching undergraduates and yet it is his passion. His intellect, dedication, and endless wit shows in his lectures and especially during office hours. There's a lot of reading, and you're expected to participate. Yes it is a lot of work, but global health policy is not easy in the classroom or beyond.
Honestly he is probably the best professor I have had at Carolina. One of the few teachers who goes out of his way to be there for his students in and out of the classroom. The class is tough and there's a lot of reading but Dr. Meier is truly inspirational.
Dr. Meier is one of the most personally inspiring professors I've had at UNC. Health and Human Rights gave me a new perspective on health policy, and on life. The class has a global focus, and the material can be slightly vague and intangible at times, but ANYONE looking to go into public health health policy needs to take this class.
Professor Meier is one of a kind. His class is inspirational and he made an 100 person class feel small - by the second day, he knew everyone's name. The information and normative frameworks are not easy, but Professor Meier pushes you to think deeper. I have never learned more in one class and had so much fun.
Professor Meier is a wonderful professor, but more importantly an inspiring individual. He will take the time to get to know you and cares about your concerns that go beyond the classroom. I highly recommend this class. You will be sure to learn something, even if it's Hamilton lyrics. He will challenge you to go forth and do good in this world.
I took this class to learn about policy and didn't know it was just ethics. He is very VERY passionate, but he made me feel like I had no shot at even passing the class so I made it P/F. I got a B+ without trying more than 20% the second half of the class. He made it seem like his class was so special and difficult that no one was worthy of passing
Without a doubt the BEST professor I have ever had at UNC complete with exceptional powerpoint presentation skills and charisma to last for several lifetimes. I don't know why he decided to teach because he is WAY overqualified, but I appreciate it immensely and hope to take another one of his classes in the future.
Professor Meier is a very entertaining and engaging professor. He is guaranteed to burst into song at least 3 times a class session. Get ready to laugh and be engaged. You have to write a few short papers and a final paper, which he grades seriously, trying to stretch you to do better. Class participation is important and he encourages discussion.
Ben is the best lecturer I have ever seen. He is super enthusiastic about justice in public policy, and makes every class engaging. His exams are tough and require a ton of studying and writing, but the payoff is worth it. I learned a ton in this class and am grateful to have Professor Meier as a resource for the rest of college.
Fantastic professor! He assigns lots of readings and a few papers. Professor Meier expects a lot from his students, but gives the class his all. His powerpoints are fantastic and he tries really hard to get the class engaged. Strongly recommend, but be ready for him to expect a lot out of you.
Dr. Meier is great. His lectures, full of cynicism, humor, and well timed musical references will engage you and cause you to see the world in a new way. Yes, there is a lot of reading and mandatory attendance. Yes, the class is hard. But honestly, if you put effort in, an A is more than possible. Take the class, it will make you a better person.
Prof. Meier is clearly an expert in his field and enthusiastic about teaching, but he strayed onto the side of being condescending towards us and acting like we could never understand the concepts. This class was supposed to be a first year seminar but he just lectured and posed questions. There was no discussion or difference of opinion allowed.
Okay, yes, this class was difficult for me because I wasn't used to high-level readings. However, I would still highly recommend taking it- especially if you're interested at all in health policy. If you're not, it might be a little more than you bargained for, but if you are, having Professor Meier will be invaluable and you will learn SO MUCH.
Incredible, inspiring professor. However, this seminar is very reading heavy, which can be difficult if global health policy isn't your true passion. Definitely still worth taking a class with Meier!
Meier is absolutely amazing. The class requires reading and participation, but if you put in effort you will do fine. He is so passionate and knowledgeable and a true gem. He cares that you learn but he also cares about your growth and wellbeing. Meier is someone that I can trust and go to for advice. He is a professor that genuinely cares.
As a non-humanities major, I was worried this course would be overly philosophical but Meier made it relevant, accessible and indisputably fun. Course components divided into weekly papers, two exams, forums, and participation- reading is super important! Each lecture was well rehearsed with goofs and musical references that are sure to engage you.
Dr. Meier cares so deeply about all of his students. He puts incredible effort into each class (as you will quickly realize through his powerpoints and musical themes). The class was incredibly engaging and an integral part of my UNC experience. Readings are SUPER important to doing well in this class. He is always willing to help/explain concepts.
Do not take this class for a freshman seminar. He just talks at you for the whole class and doesn't foster true discussion. It seems like he repeats the same things in each class. Really doesn't allow ant room for questions.
you cannot go wrong with Dr. Meier for your first-year seminar. The class is super interesting, and really engaging. You learn a ton about the world as well as the United Nations. While the class is reading heavy, there is hardly any outside work besides that. You learn a bunch, but its super low stress and an easy A. It's super worth it.
Professor Meier truly cares about the development of his students. He is very open and hosts office hours every week. The class does have a lot of reading and is by no means an easy A, but Professor Meier is engaging none the less.
This seminar is definitely a must if you are a first-year. This class is reading and participation heavy, but you learn a lot about the different avenues of global health policy. Professor Meier is also super passionate about the topic and he makes the lectures very fascinating
I really enjoyed PLCY76H with Professor Meier. He has a lot of experience in the Global Health Policy field and he is really dedicated to teaching us everything he knows. His lectures are really interesting and funny as well. While the class has a lot of necessary reading, overall I think it's a great course for freshmen to take!
The material is intense for a first year seminar, but completely worth it. You leave class with a comprehensive understanding of global health policy, policy institutions and governance structures that will be applicable well beyond this class. Meier's lectures are incredible with themed discussions everyday that are engaging and inspiring for all.
Professor Meier is a fantastic professor who really brings PLCY 76H to life. He balances the serious & dramatic nature of the course with his sense of humor & cultural references and is very accessible when needed. I leave every class inspired and wanting to learn more. He has opened my eyes to the world of policy and human rights in global health.
Prof. Meier genuinely cares about students, in and out of class. He is funny and makes every class enjoyable. I would recommend every single first year to take his seminar. The readings and papers are important, but they aren't too hard. Participate, be willing to ask questions, and engage with the material, and you'll do great.
Professor Meier is one of the best professors I've had. He is incredibly passionate about Global Health Policy, and is the reason that I became interested in the field as well. His lectures are engaging, and the reading-based discussions involve students and foster a deeper understanding of the material. I would definitely recommend this class.
Great professor who really cares about the students and really passionate about Global Heath Policy with amazing musical references and puns!
He's an okay Professor. He can get kind of emotional though and wants pity from his students. His class is mildly interesting but he just kinda repeats the same things over and over again, like "institutions norms +architecture." . His a little bit funny and makes a lot of self depressing jokes which is weird considering his hubris.
Dr. Meier is the most passionate professor I've had at UNC. If you never thought that human rights had musical themes, think again. Dr. Meier is extremely accessible and wants you to engage with the material which is easy given the interesting topics. PLCY 570 was a fair amount of work but I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Dr. Meier is the most inspirational professor I have ever had. I left his class inspired to work and change the world. This class is very difficult and has a lot of readings, but all of the work felt worthwhile and necessary. His jokes and Hamilton references are hilarious and he is always kind and caring in office hours.
One of my favorite professors I've had at UNC, Meier truly cares about his students and it's very clear that he is teaching in order to help create a better future. He is inspiring and has incredible experience and wisdom in human rights. Lectures are o entertaining and musical. While you can tell he is left leaning, he doesn't lecture opinion
Meier might not directly lecture opinion but he makes it very clear which side he thinks is right and chooses to only present certain information on a topic. Theres nothing wrong with professors being liberal, but there is something wrong with being unable to disagree with them
Dr. Meier is an amazing professor. He is the only prof I am looking forward to taking another class with. Professors can have their own political opinion, this is not high school--life is political, people need to face that reality. He is always open for conversation & if you have differing opinions, voice them instead of writing online.
Meier is definitely an expert & super passionate about global health. Every class has a theme (Hamilton, Star Wars, etc) which makes it more fun. We had readings & a (pretty easy) reading quiz before each class, & 2 papers + a final paper. Participation is key (20% of grade). I did learn a lot & people interested in health should take this class!
I went into this FYS without much knowledge about public health and absolutely loved it! Professor Meier does a great job of making it enjoyable and memorable. There is quite a bit of reading (3 readings assigned per class), but overall very manageable workload. To anyone considering him and/or PLCY76H, 10/10 would recommend!!
I looked forward to attending this class each day. I was new to global health and found the textbook to be comprehensive, insightful and thought-provoking. The lectures then enriched lessons from the text through class discussions, case studies, and informative PPTs. Make it a priority to take a class with Professor Meier!! He's truly inspiring.
Hardest class I've ever taken. Meier is an amazing human who cares about his students, but his exams are unnecessarily hard and assigns hours upon hours of dense philosophy readings every day. Could never work on any of my other classes it was so much. Tough grader, expect to work your butt off with little reward. Screwed my mental health.
Amazing class with an amazing professor. In light of the class being held online, Professor Meier was accommodating and provided very engaging lectures and assignments. While the readings were a bit dense, Meier provided a lot of opportunities during office hours or other times to discuss the class topics in greater detail. Would highly recommend!
He cares about the material & helping students, but class was stressful, participation is absolutely mandatory (and he'll make you feel bad if you don't), the participation ?s sometimes don't relate to the day's readings, there are 4-5 long readings per class with daily quizzes, & no grading criteria for the papers worth 15-30% of your grade.
The problem is how vague it is. Although he is fun will dance in the class, talks in different voices, themes, and plays music. No grading criteria and no specificity when it comes to expectations. In some cases, he does expect you to know more about Public Policy than what we do know especially since this is an FYS. Just be prepared. Okay class.
This class will be difficult and you may struggle but not without wonderful themes and a caring professor. My knowledge on global health policy is limited but you do have a few takeaways from the class. Less guided thinking and more on your own. Overall I liked the time I spent and it was worth it and I might just know how to save the world.
Really enjoyed this class- you definitely get back what you put into it. Prof Meier cares so much and is truly passionate about his subject (literally was Zooming in from Geneva if needed). Definitely some reading, nothing unmanageable, but don't expect to do no homework just because it's a fys. Would recommend!
While he does make you work for it, Professor Meier is an incredibly passionate lecturer who does his best to make sure his students know he cares. There is a lot of reading to be done, and he expects active discussion, but the class is a lot of fun, and you really feel like you get a lot out of it.
TAKE A CLASS WITH MEIER!!! He does assign a lot of reading, but quizzes are short and readings can be skimmed for main points. His lectures are so entertaining and he really cares about his students.
I took this class to fulfill a gen ed and to get an honors credit. This ended up being the hardest class I took (I think I'll finish with a B or B+) and the class I spent the most time on. There is a crazy amount of reading and the grading criteria for essays and writing assignments is extremely vague. Would not recommend (unless ur a plcy major)
I was excited to take the honors section of this course as I was told it would be a seminar style, debate-heavy class. Meier teaches 340 as if its a performance with a script and complex slides for each class that focus more on aesthetics than content. We rarely engage in extended full class discussions which he subjugates to the forum.
Professor Meier is one of the best professors I've had at UNC. I couldn't recommend him more. His teaching style is a bit unconventional (frequently sings during class), but it makes the class memorable. He does assign a ton of reading, but it is almost always interesting and topical. He is by far the most passionate teacher I have ever had at UNC.
Everyone should take a class with Meier. He's passionate about the subject, and does a good job of explaining what the real world implications of ethical frameworks are. This class is great for anyone who wants to engage with public policy. For the people complaining about the difficulty or readings, maybe the honors section wasn't the best choice.
I wanted to love this class. Unreasonable readings. PPTs (not posted) have more flair than substance. The random musical outbursts were endearing until they quickly weren't. He lectures in this dramatic, rehearsed voice and at times it seems like he's more interested in putting on a performance than making sure students understand the content.
Dr. Meier is probably the most theatric professor at Chapel Hill, he really knows his stuff and obviously puts lots of effort into teaching it in an interesting way, don't take his class if you don't want to hear him sing. Paper heavy and he expects engagement online and in class
Professor Meier is clearly a well-respected and knowledgeable member of the policy world but this does not translate into his teaching skills. His musical outbursts during lecture are uncomfortable and not relevant, he makes students feel bad when they don't answer his questions "right", and he never provides clear grading criteria.
Meier is the best professor I've ever had the pleasure of taking a class with. He cares for his students in a way no one else does and genuinely wants to know how you are doing. He may appear theatrical, but the class touches on all sorts of depressing, real-life topics and that's his way of inspiring his students to create change. Take his class!!
Dr. Meier has amazing lectures where everything is planned to a T! He has a script and each day has its own theme such as Taylor Swift, Hamilton, and Aretha Franklin. He is an enjoyable Professor and you will learn so much, however, the assigned readings are a lot and reading quizzes are hard. He has two 500 word papers and a final paper.
Such a strange man. VERY clearly cares about his students and their wellbeing, but that does not always translate into his teaching style. This is such a dense class with material that I often just felt went completely over my head. I would absolutely not take this class unless you are extremely passionate about Health Policy.
He's a good teacher and is very passionate about what he teaches. There are somewhat lengthy readings due before each class and a reading quiz, but it's not too hard. Grade is mainly based on participation, two papers, and the final paper. I learned a lot and classes were engaging, encouraging students to participate and reflect upon the readings.
Prof. Meier does really care about his students, however, the content of this course is very repetitive and boring if you don't have a particular passion for global health policy. Meier is entertaining though!
Meier is a very accomplished person and well-versed in policy, and I do appreciate his animated personality and effort to make the class more entertaining than a lot of the conventional dry lectures in college. That being said, while I generally agree with his views, he can come across as a bit pompous and want things interpreted in a specific way.
Dr. Meier is one of the most unique professors I've had at UNC and I mean that in the best way. His lectures make ethics interesting and encourage application of the material to present policy debates. Participate DEFINITELY matters, there is a one-page paper due each week, and 2 exams. Loved this class!
Dr Meier's class has been my favorite class I have taken at UNC. He brings an energy into the class that engages each and everyone of his students and he connects with them personally. Dr. Meier provides a foundational understanding of global health that is accessible for both undergraduates and graduates. I couldn't recommend his class more!!!
I came into university not considering global health, now it is my major. The person I attribute this to is Dr. Meier. During a time when global health is under attack, we need more Meier's and more students to learn from him. Everyone should take this class. Also, it is an appropriate workload allowing students to learn but not overwhelming.
Incredible professor and fascinating material! Both undergraduates and graduates will learn A LOT from the class. Good amount of reading, but not too much that it feels unmanageable. Very understanding professor and kind human. This class is a must take! If you are not passionate about global health before it, you will be after!!!
He is clear and answers questions. He engages with the material and is an amazing lecturer-- it is impossible to be bored in his class. He provides room for students to engage with other students and engage in larger class setting. You will learn tons from the class! You cannot graduate UNC without taking a class with Meier and this one is a MUST.
MUST TAKE: I have gained so much knowledge about global health!! This class will leave you fulfilled and fascinated. Meier is incredible -- using songs to interact with students and truly cares about his students. He goes beyond being supportive in class and always has a door open to be there for any student. I always look forward to class!!
LOVE THIS CLASS!! incredible professor, learn a ton, solid amount of readings but not too much that it is unbearable. anyone can take it -- provides foundational understanding of global health! SO applicable to current events/other majors/etc. U HAVE TO TAKE!!!
I RECOMMEND. Dr. Meier is funny and uses current events to engage with students -- he is never afraid to belt a tune and is also the kindest professor I have met at UNC. He makes you welcomed and heard in his class! The material is interesting and extremely relevant! There are not exams, but rather papers which he provides accessible material for!
Took this class last semester and I will miss being in class with him!! Incredible content, professor, lecture style! Every student of any major should take!! So happy I took it!! I didn't feel overwhelmed but also felt I gained a ton from the class!! it was a perfect class and also very flexible to student feedback. you feel very cared about!
Extremely engaging and absolutely incredible class. Material is interesting and open my eyes to the world of global health. Even if you are not studying public health I seriously recommend! Both the professor and content make this class incredible. A definite take at UNC
must take class, extremely interesting content and fun interactions with students. learned a ton and would completely recommend. great professor and he is extremely passionate
incredible professor and inspired me to pursue a degree in public health! Everyone must take a class with Meier, it will change your UNC experience.
Dr. Meier deeply cares about his students and makes them all feel at home! I've been in his class for a few weeks now and would say it is already one of my favorite classes at UNC. super interesting material and engaging lectures! a solid amount of reading, but it is not overwhelming. definitely recommend
This class does a beautiful job of turning complicated subjects into something discussable and accessible without removing the importance of them. Dr. Meier is the most passionate professor I have ever met and he cares so deeply about his students. He will know everyone's name before you even walk into the classroom that day. This class is a must.
this class is incredible and Meier is amazing! all students must take this class and it is accessible for both undergraduates and graduates. it is a class thats challenging but not overwhelming. AMAZING PROFESSOR
A LOT of reading/work for a FYS, sometimes 50+ pages after each class. He's a tough grader so be prepared to work hard if you want an A. Other than that, he is extremely knowledgeable in global health policy, and his classes are super fun to attend. Participation matters, so try to talk at least once every class or every other class. Great guy!
Dr. Meier is incredible. This class has been by far my favorite class I have taken at UNC. The class has been so fulfilling and I have learned so much. The class is not for the light -- it is a lot of work and constant readings but i can ensure you will never take a class where you will learn more. would recommend and he is very kind/understanding
Meier was entertaining, but in retrospect I was a bit disappointed with the content in the course as he elected to touch on Ukraine and Russia, but not Palestine — a much more pertinent issue. To be fair, this wouldn't have sat well with the board, but to not acknowledge it in any capacity for a class called ‘Justice in Public Policy' is odd.
dr. meier's class is unlike any other class i've taken, he is an amazing professor who cares so deeply about his students and global health. i look forward to coming to class everyday. his class is one you listen and retain information from. he is such an engaging lecturer and would take another one of his classes in a heartbeat.
If you want an easy A first-year seminar, do not take PLCY-76H. However, if you want to work hard, truly enjoy the history of health policy, and enjoy reading at least 20+ pages of reading each class, then do take this class. Professor Meier is very knowledgeable and really cares about his students, but his class is hard for a FYS.
