good teacher, not so clear sometimes because he explains a lot of things together which may confuse the student
a fair teacher. he is very kind and polite with his students. he understands the situations of his students. Not an easy A, but you will get an A if you do the work. Good teacher in general, but a lot of times he explains a lot of subjects together which may confuse the student
Very good professor. Class material is difficult but Mertz makes exams fair and grades very reasonably. You NEED the book to do well is this class. Offers 5 extra credit quizzes throughout the year that can raise your grade a maximum of 1% each. Overall, great professor, hard challenging class, glad its over.
Terrible teacher. Did not have adequate knowledge of the topic he was trying to teach. He worked very hard to make the class more difficult than it needed to be. In reality though, it's a pretty easy course. Read the book if you have Mertz, cause all you'll learn will be from the book.
Great professor. He knows how to teach a difficult topic well and homework isn't difficult if you follow attentively during his lectures. Tests are moderate in difficulty and he is a very fair grader. Challenging class, and very rewarding. Highly recommend!
The course in itself was an easy course, even for a summer course. I just did not like his teaching style. His class was based off of powerpoints, but he definitely liked to hear himself talk, so get ready for long lectures on non complicated topics. He was not terrible, but not good either.
Really nice guy. The first half of the semester is super easy just with Lab Reports and a few quizzes. The project is tough but he grades it really easy. Your team can definitely drag you down though. Just do they work and you should get the grade you want.
He is really nice, but in my perspective it seems that he doesn't want to be teaching freshmen. Take your time to do the lab stuff! It will kill your grade if you don't do it! But don't worry too much about your grade, because the final project will bump your grade up significantly!
He is way too idealistic. It's annoying, but the class was pretty easy. Just make sure you smile and look like an aspiring young engineer. Try to keep faith in his projects and you'll stay happy
He's a very nice prof who seems to love engineering. Super helpful. The class itself is kind of lame, but Dr. Mertz makes it interesting/fun. Quizzes aren't bad if you review the lectures.
Mertz makes a ton of mistakes on his homework's and fails to be consistent in teaching style. I was excited at first because he did not have an accent and was understandable but definitely does not prepare students for the test. Avoid him!
This class is said to be one of the hardest classes Aero students have to take. It really can be, if you aren't willing to step up your game. If you attend every lecture and study, the homework is easy. The tests are very fair. The labs are intense but manageable. Dr. Mertz loves teaching and is a great person. He is here for you, to help you learn
He's an okay teacher. He likes to help but he's really boring and you'll fall asleep listening to him in lecture. His TAs do all the grading and its not easy to get an A. You can get a B if you work well.
This class is inherently difficult, but Mertz makes it even harder. His lectures are EXTREMELY boring. He teaches mostly from powerpoint slides but he seems to include more examples now than when I had him previously for MAE 240. He often gets confused in class and makes a lot of mistakes. I only got A's from him by studying a lot on my own.
Great Class, Challenging if you don't keep up work. Fair tests, be sure to check assignments to catch grading mistakes Summer semester moved very fast the last week included 2 tests a mini project and a homework assignment due He was a lot of help during office hours&during class. Highly recommend, plan to put a good amount of work in to get an A.
Last week was hell week because almost 50% of the grade depended on it. Tests are lengthy and challenge question on each exam worth a good amount of points. They can be difficult and can make or break you. To pass this course you need to get a 70% in the class AND 70% on each core concept questions on the exams. If you miss 1 CC you fail the class.
Pretty good teacher. His lectures seem to drag on but maybe that's because the summer classes were 130 minutes. I really really don't like how he does core concepts... you can get an A letter grade in the class but if you get < 70% on a core concept you have to take the class again. Tests are difficult, but not crazy.
The only problem for me was the way the class structure. You absolutely had to get a 70% on all of the core concepts in the class in order to pass the class, regardless of your point total. That being said, I actually liked Mertz as a teacher because he'll find a way to help you understand. Classes do get boring sometimes though as they are long.
Mertz was a great teacher. I feel like he made things very understandable and gave lots of opportunity to get help. His tests were challenging but he gave good review opportunity and homeworks were very similar to tested material. Textbook is a very useful asset in this course, you need it to get an A. It is a very difficult course... work hard!
He's a nice guy, american accent, and the class is pretty easy.
Guy is not reasonable. Makes constant mistakes and writes his own HW problems. He has rookie fever so his tests are quite unreasonable because he will throw tricks in left and right!
Try to take Trowbridge. If you actually want to learn something, sure, Mertz is okay, but his tests are slightly more difficult than others. Sometimes there are information on the tests that are not covered.
Good guy. If you pay attention and do what your supposed to do, you will get an A in the class. I thought I was going to get a C with the test score I kept receiving, but I was wrong. Seems like he sincerely cares for his students. Also pray you get a good group, but my group was bad and I still managed a good grade.
Terrible professor. Condescending, rude, and has a major attitude problem. Very difficult to learn from, and when you ask questions or ask for help he basically tells you to figure it out on your own. For an entry-level class, he took it way too seriously graded extremely harshly. Will not round up, even if you're .01 points away from higher grade.
Mertz was a good teacher, he really loves engineering and the only hard part of this class is to get your group to do the work well!
This class is easy, for the most part. The quizzes are hard but as long as you study you will do good. First half of the class is easy lab work and last half is a group project. Plenty of time to work on the project but make sure you start right away.
Mertz really cares about his work and helping his students if they are willing to show the effort. I took his honors section, we had frequent quizzes but they were always easy if you studied what he suggeted
Avoid this hell
If you have a great team, and start the project early, you will do fine in the class. You and your team must climb the mountain on your own. Professor Mertz is a very helpful and nice professor, but it is up to you to do the work. If you are willing to work he will help you. Our team used Google Hangouts on Air with a team Google+ Page to meet.
Terrible teacher. You learn more on your own than in his lectures. He throws curveballs on test, asking about stuff that was glossed over. Very nitpicky and stingy grader, you'll lose points over the most minor things. Lastly he doesn't have any real experience. He doesn't teach what you'll actually use and need to know.
Nice guy personally, atrocious teacher
The test are very difficult and nothing like the home work or examples in class. The lectures are very long and boring. Does not keep your attention. makes the tests way harder than the needed to be. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
This class is unforgivingly hard. In lecture, he makes the material seem really easy, then when yo do the homework and test, you get slammed. He is very anal about the way he wants you to solve problems, and if you don't follow it, he takes a lot of points off. Unless you're willing to learn everything yourself, don't take him!!!
I really liked Dr. Mertz. He really loves his job and none of his expectations are unreasonable. The final project is a LOT of work, but you work on it in lab the whole second half of the semester. He is really friendly and happy to help you, and his quizzes aren't bad at all. I enjoyed this class and would recommend him as a professor.
He is a really easy professor with lower division classes like FSE 100 or ASU 101. There really isn't anything to learn in these classes so his easygoing personality makes them easy. His teaching skills aren't that great which makes him difficult to work with in upper division classes. I had three of his classes. Don't take him passed year 1.
Great professor but extremely difficult and sometimes complicates things to get concepts across.
mertz is good. homeworks can be tricky sometimes but he's helpful if you go to office hours. tests are pretty straight forward. first question is a definition, next two/three are core concepts, and the last one will combine concepts. you also can make a cheat sheet which is helpful.
Mertz is a great teacher-one who will stretch you and turn you into a better person. People find his classes hard but he is clear on what he expects and gives plenty of help-great in office hrs. There are 7 "core concepts" in the class that are tested on exams. Test are easier than HW except for the challenge question, which combines concepts.
Guy will not teach you what you need for the real world. Likes to teach certain concepts and since this course is concatenated with several courses that WERE full semester classes(fluid mechanics, thermodynamics etc...). Bottom line if you want to be prepared for real world engineering, DO NOT TAKE MERTZ!!!!!!
Quizzes are far too specific and detailed for an intro class quiz. Expects an understanding of conceptual engineering. I would have been lost in the project if I didn't have an engineering background.
His quizzes are incredibly asinine and overly specific. Class teaches intuitive ideas and yet if you don't put down exactly what he wants for an answer you're going to lose a lot of points. Example: Apparently you don't consider members schedules when in a engineering project. Go figure.
Dr. Metz is a great professor, he is helpful and energetic. This class was a fantastic introduction to engineering at ASU and filled with wonderful tools to help you succeed. I would suggest this class to any engineering student transferring to ASU. A+
To be honest hes a cool guy, pretty nice and all. However, if you think hes teaching you, you have another thing coming. At the beginning of every lecture there's a quiz on what you're learning in that lecture. The first half of labs there's a quiz. The best way to salvage a grade in that class is the group project. Get good friends with that team
Do not pick him. He is an extremely tough grader and the average grade for his class is about a grade lower than the other two instructors. Seriously, do not pick him.
His idea of teaching is ensuring that you are familiar with the exact definitions rather than the conceptualizations of lessons. He will make you watch worthless videos (that are said to be in order) from his website and when it comes to class, then completely change it around and blame you for not knowing the syllabus. Boring and awkward guy.
He is an all around great professor. Super helpful, but tests, Tests, and more TESTS! Lab quiz every lab, lecture quiz every lecture, 1 midterm, crazy hard group project with lots of documents and presentations. Difficult but DOABLE!
You need to skim the lecture PDFs before every class and lab because there is always a quiz. Do poorly on these and your grade will suffer. There is a big project but I thought he graded leniently. There is only one test and it is easy if you understood the quizzes, plus he let us use our lab notes. Some of the directions for project were confusing
The course itself is tedious and difficult, I am unsure how much is due to Mertz. However, he is helpful and will try to solve your problem if you go to office hours. Attending the lecture is only necessary for the first ten or so minutes for the lecture quiz. You can leave and there is no penalty, except for being rude.
First professor ever to get weighted down on your final grade to fail yous
This class was very frustrating. First warning, for a 2 credit hour course this one feels like 5. Also, instructions for assignments are typically found in pieces in multiple places. Very confusing. Very easy to get marked down for a misunderstanding, like improper formatting of your assignment. Be thorough, read everything.
Benjamin Mertz is a sadist. No other way to put it. The homework is long and painful, and goes well beyond the scope of the course. If you go to his office hours to ask questions, you sorta get a half answer and a bit of a smirk at most of your questions. Would NOT take for ANYTHING EVER AGAIN.
His grading scale does not teach you to become a better engineer. It's all about points for him. Grades shouldn't have to be based on points, but should be based on how much you learn about a given subject. It's not too hard to complete the homework, but as soon as you think you know the material, the exams bring you down every time.
Mertz made this class as hard as he could. Homework is so painful and does not correlate to lecture. The hw problems are so lengthy and difficult compared to other 384 professors. The way he structures his class is also meant to give you hell. DO NOT ever take this professor.
Mertz does not get enough credit. I have had Dr. Mertz for three different courses and have enjoyed his teaching each time. He provides his lecture slides and handwritten notes, is helpful during office hours, and allows you to check your homework answers before you turn it in. Mertz will not hand you an A, but he will give you the tools to do so.
Long time to grade work once turned it. Talks about Jesus and blessings. Engineering class grades based on musical understanding and ability.
This course is hard. Mertz makes things harder. HW is very difficult but relates to real world applications. I've never had to work so hard for an A before. Going to his office hours is ESSENTIAL to completing homework. I have no regrets, however. I enjoyed this class and I think Mertz is a great professor. He just expects A LOT from students.
DO NOT take Mertz for this class. He is not a very bad lecturer, but his homeworks are incredibly lengthy, hard, and require a lot of MATLAB coding that he "expected you learned in MAE 215" which the coding he requires is so much more advanced. Tests are difficult, he doesn't give you a clear grading scale at all. Avoid him at all costs.
AVOID!! At any cost! He has this stupid core outcome thing that no other 384 profs use. Homeworks are master's level and I know this coz I had to sit with them to finish it and they showed the same problem in their textbook. Explains in the way of stories. Math in the form of stories, your concepts are screwed by this. As good as no extra credit
Worst teacher I've ever taken in my whole 14 years of schooling. The homework is tough and the tests are worse. He spent two days reviewing for the final and none of the stuff he even talked about was on the final. Avoid this guy at all costs
The "outcomes" others are speaking of are in every MAE 384 class at ASU. Also, Dr. Mertz uses the exact same lectures as other teachers for this course, they are simply long lectures. Overall, it is a hard course and prepare to work a lot. The grading is strict. He is a "by the book" type of guy. He will help if you ask the right questions.
Dr. Mertz is a firm, passionate professor. His lectures were comprehensive and engaging. Homework was short, but tedious. Exams were graded and weighted HARD. Dr. Mertz has a reputation on being tough and strict. However, he only expects 100% from you. Go to lectures, take notes, review often, visit office hours, use Piazza, and you'll prevail.
Professor Mertz is very knowledgable and assigns interesting projects for FSE100. At times the instruction can be unclear and the material doesn't always add value to the assignments. My recommendations: do every assignment, front underestimate the difficulty of the quizzes and don't underestimated the time for each assignment.
Professor Mertz's numerical class is by far the hardest class I've taken so far, but easily the most rewarding. Set aside time every week for his office hours and attend the TA's recitation if possible. Showing up to lectures will probably not be enough.
Mertz knows exactly what he is talking about and teaching. The homeworks are essential in this class and you need to know Matlab or get help throughout the semester. Tests were not that bad (if you take notes each lecture). The main focus was homework, about 50% of your grade.
Thermo I with Mertz was by far the best class I have had! I took this course over the summer and was sad that it ended. Mertz was clear, very passionate about the material, and super helpful outside of class also. We had 2 big exams (not too bad if you did the homework), homework each week (4 problems), and a group project. Highly recommend!
Mertz is extremely condescending and rude to students, smirks at questions and rarely will give an answer. Seems like he gets pleasure when student is wrong. Usually responds with a smirk and a "figure it out". Very discouraging to students and to the entire ASU engineering program. Can't cheat on his daily quizzes because nobody knows the answers.
The class is very interesting but all that is required from you in every due date is everywhere. So look closely an double read the instructions. They are not very clear.
This class was the worst online class experience I've had. Half of the assignments are team assignments. I got points taken away for being the only one participating in my team. If you take this class make sure you have a light course load. Not worth 2 credit hours.
He just doesn't have genuine empathy, and flawed logic, with his freshman classes. He's uncomfortable and mumbles and you never know what he is saying because he never speaks loud enough unless its to the class; which I think is just the exact opposite of personable. He's not very approachable. It was like was talking to a boss.& I've never worked!
Don't fret about all the work it's graded pretty easily. The final project is to make a few instruments with a team. My instrument was horrible and I got a B, I was the only member of my team to even submit. Focus on the writing assignments, make sure you hit every item on the rubric for those and it an easy A.
The class is one long group project, randomly assigned teams. No textbook required. You must show up. Be sure to refer to the grading criteria before beginning your project. Find out how to optimize points to effort ratio.
Mertz was the reason I almost dropped engineering. Luckily I took another FSE class and loved it. It was the same material for both classes, but with one class I hated it, and the other I loved it. Definitely shows how much the professor affects students view on a class. He doesn't really know how to teach and is very awkward.
This was a required class for engineering transfer students. Attendance is graded, assignments can be involved but are easy to do. Overall was an enjoyable course.
Avoid him as any cost! He is knowledgable about what he is teaching, but he should be the last choose on your list for class! If you don't believe me, go try it. And you will return to write the same thing here as me.
Avoid this guy. It seems he likes to make everything as hard as he possibly can.
Dr. Mertz expects a lot but is willing to help if you ask the right questions. He's not going to hand you a grade. A majority of the core competencies required can be hit via homework, and he's stressed its only required to show mastery once for each. Must know MATLAB or get help. Tests aren't bad if you understand the equations and how they work.
Mertz is a pretty good teacher, he explains the book's concepts pretty well and has enthusiasm. The exams and homework are difficult but reasonable for the most part. Will curve a little bit but not very much so getting an A is difficult. Start the labs early, especially the transonic lab if you want your code to work.
Skip this guy at any cost. It's worth to delay a semester rather than taking him with any materials. His homework are burdale and very hard to do in one day. His exams are evil and most of student will skip a question just because he didn't manage the time correctly. I will never ever take class with him again even if I will delay, I rather wait
Do the homework with the TA's to make sure you understand it for the tests. Its worth a large part of the grade so do the best you can. Also, any formula from the sheets he gives is fair game so lookout for that on the tests. Get the book in order to look at example code. Make sure you are up to speed on your matlab!
Mertz does care about his class but teaches a very hard class. If you show up and prove you put the effort into the class you will do fine. If he gives a deadline and says you can't do it in one day he actually means you can't finish it in one day. For AEE 362 Specifically Start on the Lab Reports Early especially the Transonic Code
Mertz was basically assigning a bunch of sophomores grad level homework the entire semester. Hardest class I've ever taken. avoid at all costs.
If you have Dr. Mertz for MAE 384 RIP, chief. Homework takes 15+ hours a week even with help from the TA's. He writes exams knowing no one will be able to finish them. Better know matlab.
He's the worst lecturer in Engineering. Terrible experience. Skip this guy at any cost
It was the only FSE 100 instructor in the summer thats why i took it, you will regret yourself if you take this class with Mertz.
His lectures are a little boring, but he teaches the material relatively clearly. He makes you work, but I felt like none of the work was unnecessary. Not much curve at the end of the class, so don't count on it.
Mertz is easily the worst teacher I've had at ASU. Makes 2nd year students do work that he was doing in graduate school. I do not recommend taking this class at all costs.
He expects a lot from the students right away. Assumed that everyone knew the same amount before taking this class. Heavy focus on final project
This professor expects quality from your work. His lectures are pretty simple, and his labs are not bad at all. The real problem is that he assigns your group for the whole semester, and does nothing about it. I ended up doing all the work regardless when I told him the problems with my group, and he just said "It's your group. Not my problem."
As a person he is great, but the way he makes the exams and expect the work he wants you to put is really crazy. I am praying to get a C from his class, I just want to pass and finish the class, never ever worked this much in my entire student career. He has ridiciolus outcomes you have to pass, if you can't then you fail. AVOID HIM !!!
Core course outcome in a thermo 1 class, good joke. This guy has the personality of a potato and looks like one too don't waste your time with this one plenty of better teachers who you can learn plenty from and pass at the same time.
Homeworks are hard. Teacher grades VERY strict on exams; very little partial credit. Labs difficult but doable. Textbook is fantastic--get it! Transonic lab sucks. Find a team or get code from former student. Be ready to invest time in this class.
Mertz is a tough grader and critiques every little thing that you write. His homework assignments are pointless and take a while to complete. If this class wasn't mandatory I would never take it again. For 2 credits can ready to work a lot for homework that will get heavily critiqued. Midterm and Final are word for word from the review. No textbook
Dr. Mertz assigns incredibly difficult homework and has weekly quizzes. He assigns programming assignments which are unclear and take roughly 15-20 hours to complete. He does not check that the class is understanding the material, he just dumps tons of work on the students. The other professors for 384 are much more reasonable workload-wise.
