he shows a lot of examples which really helps you understand the material, although some people do get lost when he takes arithmic shortcuts (for example, introducing a number as a result of multiplying by one - 8/8) i think as long as your basic math skills are good, you'll have no problem understanding. homework on mathlab is a little extensive.
the hw is easy but this class has the hardest tests
Morris is very smart, and he assumes his students are on the same level as him, he flies through examples, skips many steps, doesn't example concepts throughly, no curve on tests, review problems not like the tests, online homework sucks, basically this man knows his material but can't teach it to his students, I recommend finding a knew instructor
Morris is a cool guy. His tests aren't bad if you study what he gives for his review and practice problems. Do the online homework and don't cheat yourself. It's easy to blow through the homework and not do it with this program but avoid that after the first 3 weeks. He gives good everyday examples to explain his stuff. good guy
book wasnt necessary, still have not bought book. math homework is online and uses convenient program that is easy to learn how to cheat the system to get perfect on homework. midterm1 easy, ook at his previous midterms. many got 100% on midterm. however he is a BAD teacher, hard to learn from him, does not practice lectures
Morris is a good teacher. You can see that he knows the stuff and his explanation is clear.(Although he writes sentences and sentences on board all the time) He skip steps often, but he is willing to help so is all right. His communication is good, way better than those who have SUPERTHICK accent. Only online homeworks sucks, but still is not bad
tests are easy, EXTREMELY easy grader. messed up entire problem docked off only 1% so i got 99% on 2nd midterm (100% on first). book wasnt necessary, still don't have one. online hwk easy to learn how to cheat so thats easy 10% nice guy. doesn't explain things too well, lectures not practiced well either.
Easy, writes everything he says on the board, and goes a little too slow, at least for me, tests are easy, got a 100% on both MT, online hw easy to cheat on, but you will have to learn from the book.
Professor Morris is amusing in a nerdy way, read his website profile. He's helpful if you ask for help. His lectures are ok, you mostly learn from the book. His midterms are really short, so remember to double check your answers. You can easily do the hw and get 100% without understanding the material. It's faster when you do though.
pretty good professor. going to lectures will help, i never went to discussion though. midterms aren't bad, there is no curve, and all homework is online which is both good and bad. first half is way easier than the second. good luck, have fun :)
He is a very smart man for sure, but his social skills are a little lacking. Lectures are sort of boring. The online homework assignmens are to easy to cheat, so people don't do the work. As long as you get a good grade on the final exam, you can get an A even if you don't take the first two midterms. It's a good theory to go by.
I began the course with some difficulty, but after attending some of Prof. Morris's office hours, I was able to bring my grade up. He also has this great grading system where if you do well on the final, he will make that your final grade. Definitely worth the agony of poor midterm scores, because his final is EASY.
I'm really trying hard in Morris' class but I'm barely keeping my head up, and this is after acing 21A and AP Calc. You really have to work hard and dedicate time for a B or higher.
Worst professor ever.doesn't teach well at all.he may know his stuff but is unable to explain it well.
Ben Morris is by far the absolute worst math professor at UC Davis. His test difficulty is unpredictable, and he is a horrible lecturer. I haven't had my math homework graded by problem since middle school, and I have gotten an A in every math class until now. I took Calculus in high school, got a 5 on the AB AP test, and this class is awful.
Horrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. You will despise this teacher. Trust. Me. I hope he never teaches at UC Davis again.
My goodness, the 2nd midterm had nothing related to the practice midterm, and I got marked off six points for not putting absolute value signs when he himself did not require it in lecture. I asked him to regrade but he gave a bad excuse of saying he'd have to grade everyone again. He couldnt explain how our grades would work, even with the curves.
he sucks. he just copies examples from the book. his practice midterms are easy. actual midterm are intense (he said there would be no trig.. and he put trig on it) UGH.. BOOOOOOOOOOO
He knows his stuff, but he has a hard time explaining. The midterms are really hard. It will be extremely difficult if you don't study. Homeworks are graded harshly. Unless you know Calc pretty well, he will be a challenge
he is a great teacher not the best very easy going hes sweet. his miterms were easy, homework is easy but graded harshly, he tries his best. he writes EVERYTHING on the board, but he gives defintions and then explains through examples so thats effective
Very smart guy, but really hard to learn from. He tries to use examples to teach and uses lots from the book, but it is really hard to comprehend the material he is teaching. Homework is based on correctness so it is really hard to do super well on that and the 2nd practice midterm was nothing like his midterm. 1st midterm was pretty easy.
He tries to teach, but fails because he only uses examples from the book, I was better off not going to class and just learning from the book. His practice midterms are RIDICULOUSLY easy and when it comes to the actual midterm, it is a LOT harder than the practice. What gets me is just how different his practice midterm is from his actual midterm.
Very good teacher. Midterms not too bad and based off the homework. If you study the homework material, you'll do good on the tests.
His class is probably the hardest and the worst and really unfair especially for students who haven't taken calc before.he does not give a pactice final and then makes the final super hard.He cannot teach at all.Avoid him if you have no previous experience of calculus or you'll probably have to repeat your course again.
Professor Morris is so new to 16B stuff that he just taught straight from notes. He is dorky in a nerdy way. Midterms are easier than the final. Final=DISASTER! Did not give a practice final. Students didn't know what to expect. Would not recommend him!
Morris was ok. His first midterm was relatively easy, but the second midterm was much more difficult, and his final was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. HW wasn't too difficult. He writes notes as if talking (literally) like saying "this is hard because..." on the board. But b/c of this, things were in fact understood better. Nerdy in an awkward way.
He does not know how to teach. copies everything from book. gives extremely easy first MT, then kills you with the second midterm, FINAL was a killer. he told us to skip problems. Avoid if possible.
Morris's slow lecturing style is actually helpful, as he doesn't skip many steps in problems and usually announces everything he's doing. He's hard to talk to though.. seems very socially detached. The 1st midterm was OK, the 2nd harder and its practice midterm was very different, and the final was INSANE. IN THE MEMBRANE. Gave no practice final.
I came from a pretty good math background, taking calculus in HS. But this teacher totally cannot teach and his exams are KILLERS. His final was a DISASTER, possibly the worst disaster in UCD's math history. Avoid taking him at all costs. He even wrote "this is hard" and said some of the integrals (including some on the final) were "impossible."
Dr. Morris is a great professor: he explains everything clearly, does lots of practice problems before exams to review, and he is very funny also. He is a great professor and I would definitely take another class with him.
He is a very good lecturer and he assigns reasonable amount of homework. His tests, particularly his final are extremely difficult. Although he is good at teaching I would not recommend his class unless you want to bottom out your GPA. The tests were just way to hard. This is coming from someone who got a 4 on the AP test an an A in 16A.
He is a pretty good teacher. Be prepared to hear many stupid questions and the daily questions about a "curve" (yes, there are such things as stupid questions), and complaining. Yes, his final was a lot harder than his 2MT's, but his MT's were fairly normal/easy. So, your grade will have some support before the final. overall, a good teacher.
The 2 midterms were fairly easy but the final was hard. He does a lot of review problems which are really helpful to study off of. Pretty nice guy too.
he's like janko gravner but 10x worse. hw was graded very harsh. midterms were do-able but practice mt did not help at all. would not regrade grading mistake bc he was too lazy too. final was HARD. he doesn't teach, it's like hearing what's in the book in a monotone voice. office hour was useless. curve helped a little bit but not much.
Very funny guy. Fair amount of hw, though I never got 10/10. Both MTs are a joke, same types of questions as practice tests. MTs only tested the basics. The Final truly challenged people to actually think creatively instead of mindlessly follow simple integrating techniques. Overall good lecturer, fair class, easier than Marx, highly recommended :)
I agree with all of those who took 16B for Winter 09. His first midterm was super easy. Second midterm was harder and the final was just a totally break down for all students. I was sweating while doing the final because it was just way too challenging. I would recommend taking his class and just do well on the first 2 midterms.
I had Morris for both 21B and 16B (changed major). They were both about the same difficulty (even though 16 is supposed to be easier) with some differences in material. First test was ridiculously easy, second test was very hard, and final was a killer. Little partial credit on exams. He is an alright lecturer, and going to class is helpful.
Definitely the best math professor I've had at Davis. His lectures are very organized, very clear, and he always has the room open for questions. There are two midterms and final (30 30 40) all of which are VERY difficult, but the curve (he curves the final grade) was very generous. All in all, I whole-heartedly recommend him for 21B.
When he asks if you're happy respond "yes", he might look intimidating but he is actually one of the most straightforward professors teaching this series.
One of the 2 best professors I have had in UC Davis so far (the other is Prf. Mulase). His HW is super hard, but he is extremely helpful if you go to his office hour. His lecture is very interesting, and he is very funny. Final is hard, much harder than the midterm so be prepared. But the curve is crazy (meaing super generous). Love him.
Very funny guy. His lectures were pretty clear-cut and to the point. Midterms and final were overall challenging, but not impossible; the questions just required an extra level of thinking than usual. Online homework was fairly easy. Overall, I enjoyed his class, and would take him again.
He seems to say many things that makes it sound like hes unsure of himself. I found the midterms and final to be more difficult than needed and it really shot me down after every one. I would recommend getting a different teacher unless you feel that confident. Cool guy and is willing to help out at office hours.. but...I wouldnt take him again.
This professor was kinda entertaining. He is always out of breath during lectures(lol). His final was truly cumulative. It pushes students to recall everything they've learned in the class as well as previous math classes. Overall, I recommend him for 21B.
Professor Morris is a bit entertaining during his lectures. He is not the best but is decent and is clear in what he is talking about. The first midterm was easy. The second was harder. And final was the hardest. The exams required a lot of critical thinking. Overall I thought it was a fair class.
Not the worst, but definitely not the best prof out there for this course. He explains things, but then contradicts himself. Spends whole lectures just to go over 2 or at most 3 examples/problems. Both midterms and the final was a murder, I think the average was 60% 50% and 50% respectively for my class. If you get him, READ THE BOOK & OFFICE HOURS
worst professor out there. he says "okay so.." like 5 times before he begins what he is trying to say. his midterms and final just destroyed everyone. recommend taking different professor.
Although he seems nervous and not like the greatest of public speakers, his lectures are organized, he is very willing to help, and his tests are usually pretty good with the exception of a problem that is a stumbler, but partial credit will save the day.
Not a good teacher, overcomplicates concepts, and makes tests harder than they need to be. Claims test problems are related to th hw but only like the first two problems are. Curve doesn't help much either and tests averages were very low.
He's not bad as I thought. He always TRY to make the class funny but.. x,x Grades really depend on the students. even thou the mean was low, he curves it. the mean is either a C+orB-. I didnt do well on test but it just happened that im better than most of the class,so im fine. try to understand and not just memorizing formula, there's tricks thou!
Comment before mine is uncorrect. He curves to where an average is a C, which I think is very unfair. Puts problems on the test that you've never seen before. Try to find another 21b instructor.
His tests are KILLER. Before I took his class, I thought I was good at calc, but then his class made me realize I was nothing. He's probably the worst math professor I could've gotten in my first quarter at Davis. Really hard to transition from high school with his way of teaching and test-taking. Find another math professor if you can.
went to every class and did every homework assignment. never went to office hours. got a C in Math 16a, got an A- in his class. He is a funny guy...you'll end up laughing because he does a lot of weird stuff. Overall if you put effort into it you can get a good grade. Good, straight forward lecturer.
I agree with the comment 2 before me. I use to love calculus, he made me hate it. I've never had anything but an A in my life & I got a C. I figured he was new but I was wrong. He's just an awkward teacher. Kinda funny in a weird way, but because of this class, I changed my major. UCD asked for the 12th version & he used the 11th. Book didn't help.
In all honesty, he was perhaps the worst teacher I have ever had. His lecture was useless, he offered no homework points, just three super hard tests. I'm an A student, worked my ass off and still failed. He's a good mathematician, terrible teacher. He clearly didn't care at all about his students.
This professor could not figure out the answers to the homework problems he assigned. He was hard to communicate with, never responded to emails and was by far the worst math teacher I have ever had.
He's pretty close to impossible to understand. If you don't remember everything there is to know about integration, just switch classes, it'll be better for you in the long run.
First true college class for engineer's/math majors, If your smart and actually know your stuff you will get a decent grade. If you are not that smart this will be the first class to smack you in the face and show that to you.
I've always hated calculus, but Professor Morris made it surprisingly enjoyable and easy to understand. He's always willing to answer questions and explain how to do problems. You definitely have to do the homework (which he gives credit for) to really understand the material, but that goes for all math classes. Overall, I loved his class.
At first I didn't like his lecture style, but it grew on me- very easy class, examples in class are the only ones on the test, practice midterms very similar to the real one. funny guy too
This class was alright. I took calculus bc in high school already so I had an easier time in the class. I thought he was clear, and if there was any confusion, the book explains it all. He's an interesting teacher, young and likable. He's humorous at times, dressing up as someone from Reno 911. Oh yea, he has practice tests so thats really helpful!
Loved him! I did relatively well and rarely went to class or discussions (though I took calc AB/BC in high school). He is interesting and easy to understand.
good teacher! take him~
I took this class in last fall and loved it a lot. I got A+ by the end which is amazing. Btw, I barely got A for math after high school. Ben is very clear, helpful and humorous. Do the HW and practice tests. Make sure you understand every detail of the practice tests and go to lectures. This class is still my fav at UCD. He's cute too.
don't have to go the lectures. Exams are like home works. He looks scary up close, like Voldemort!
Though he may seem flustered and inconsistent in class, he's pretty funny and always willing to answer questions. He covers the material in a timely manner for most lectures. He may suck at teaching, but his exams are actually very similar to homework. Textbook is not necessary, homework is written by him.
Funny teacher, test difficulty varies a bit per test.
Pretty easy class. Ditched 2/3 of his lectures and still got an A+
Morris is a smart person but sometimes has trouble communicating his thoughts. He knows what he's doing for the most part and is helpful in office hours except occasionally when he said he didn't know how to answer my questions. The first midterm was really hard, the second was really easy, the final was okay. You'll be fine if you do the work.
Morris mostly goes over examples from the textbook and proofs, but isn't much help otherwise. The homework assignments (which he insisted were the same as the test questions) were not related at all. There is a lot of self-study if you take him, even if you've done Calc before. OH are mildly helpful; he goes slower but is still hard to understand.
He comes off as a new teacher. His methodology is difficult to understand. If you're not rusty in Calculus, you will do just fine. Textbook is expensive but there are many available online. I got F's on all the midterms and final and passed the class with a C-.
His class wasn't very difficult, because I've already taken calculus in high school but I a lot of errors on the first midterm, probably because I was nervous and it was my first college midterm. His tests are fair, he curves, homework isn't mandatory but it's very helpful. Some of the homework questions show up on the midterm. As a lectures hes ok
Hard to understand but material isn't bad. Most of the people complaining on here don't put in the effort most of the time (which is about 3/4 hours a week honestly). If you need help go to office hours or ask friends. He's really not as hard as the rankings made him out to be
Very unclear about lectures but the tests were fine if you could study by yourself. Going to attend his lectures sometimes made the concepts more unclear than if I had just read the book.
super unclear.... had to study myself and curve for class is the worse
Heis a nice guy; however, he is unenthusiastic, unclear, and extremely disorganized. I went to his office hours and he was too tired to help...he yawned many times. Recommend using online resources and the textbook to learn. Most taking this course are students are foreign or took AP Calc, making the curve terrible and you'll get curved down.
Great professor. Material gone over in class is done thoroughly. Extremely helpful practice exams. Midterms are much easier than the final! Do not let this fool you.
Pretty good lecturer, and homework reflects midterms pretty well. Final is VERY hard, much harder than the midterms. But he does curve at the end of the class. Overall an alright professor. Textbook NOT needed.
Easy tests, homework and practice exam are extremely helpful.
Dr Morris is a decent teacher, and on the whole he did a good job. His pacing at times is off, and he pushed back our last midterm by a week because of it. But for a subject that's pretty tough to grasp, he did a good job of making it approachable. HW and practice tests made the real exams incredibly easy.
Class is very disorganized. He could not remember when our midterms were, or what material was to be covered. He would forget to post practice tests unless he was reminded, not to mention their solutions. The material on the midterms weren't always consistent with the pace of the class. He rarely posted grades as well until after the class ended.
Overall he is a good professor. There are just 2 midterms and a final. The midterms are not that difficult, but the final is more challenging. Doing the homework is critical to doing well, but it is not collected for credit. Barely used the textbook for this class.
I'm only halfway through the quarter and this guy is actually super chill. Explains everything very clearly and never goes off writing random stuff on the board without saying what's going on like many math professors. He tells a story in the middle of class pretty much every class and they're always pretty hilarious honestly. Would recommend.
He doesn't curve his tests and was very unclear and didn't write very thick making it hard to read what he writes on the board.
I would definitely recommend Ben. Not only are his daily comedy bits very entertaining, but he also presents the math material very clearly and it's obvious he really cares that his students all understand what is going on. His practice tests helped a lot for the midterms and final, but some are so easy that there is no curve, so be aware of that.
Pretty much just went over examples during class, which is what I like in a professor. Plenty of material to study from. Told a funny story once per class. I really enjoyed taking the class but the material was pretty difficult at times. Webwork homework you are given unlimited attempts. The midterms and the practice tests were VERY simiilar.
Morris is a great professor. He does plenty of examples in class and is fairly clear when he speaks. Loved his stories in the middle of lecture. Be sure to do the practice midterms (they are very similar to the actual midterms). That said, the final is very difficult compared to the midterms, so be aware of that. Curve was not great.
Professor Morris is a pretty funny guy. During every lecture, he tells the class a personal story that pretty hilarious. His midterms are very easy, but his final is very difficult. To put it in perspective, I had about a 97% going into the final, but I ended with a B- in the class. The curve is also not very great, so be aware of that.
He said he usually wouldn't curve for As and Bs but would curve a little for people who are close to pass the class. But this time the final was so hard and he curved. I only got 87% and was curved to an A. He is approachable. His lectures are clear. Homework is not graded. Overall worth taking.
It takes a few lectures to warm up to Professor Morris, but once you do, it's a fairly worthwhile class. He always tells a funny story in between lectures and does plenty of examples during the class to show you how to apply something. I would say his midterms are decent but his final is very difficult. One of the better professors for math.
Attend lecture and do homework to be prepared for his midterms. The practice exams are pretty similar to the actual midterms. The final is extremely hard but if you do all practice provided on his web page you should be fine.
Attendance is not entirely mandatory, but it is helpful because he does examples in class. Homework seems long but is extremely helpful. Midterms are similar to practice test and his website is explicit on what sections are covered on each test. Final was challenging but definitely fair. Overall, one of the best professors I've had here at UC Davis
Always tells a funny joke. He taught the material in a simple way, but sometimes I feel as if he didn't have that ability like other professors to really understand what the students are struggling with. His midterms were easy but his final was challenging. If you've taken hs calc, you should be fine. But please do study and reach out for help!
Ben is a clear lecturer, very easy to listen to, tries to keep things light with jokes and stories. My only issue would be that the class was only graded by two midterms and a final worth fifty percent. Would have liked the homework to be worth points, and he needs to find a better way to hand tests back.
I have never had a math teacher like Professor Morris. The class is not easy, but he makes the material understandable. Tests are very straight forward and are similar to the practice tests. He tells stories and is very funny. He obviously loves math and teaching. He takes a few weeks to get over his shyness, but the best math teacher I have had.
Looking back I didnt realize how good I had it. He's one of the few lecturers for the math 16 series I've had who actually can EXPLAIN and go at the student's pace. Not only is he funny and a really nice guy, but he does examples daily of problems that you will see on his test. Little did I know how good he is compared to some of the other 16 profs
I love this man. He tells a story every class and they are the highlight of my day. He was shy at first, but he becomes comfortable after a couple of classes. Also he rides a scooter to class which is a MAJOR plus. The class itself isnt that bad especially if you have taken ab or bc in highschool
he grades only by 2 midterms and finaland one exam includes 5-6 questions. if you answer one of them wrongyou are in troubleI wont take his class
He is a nice professor. Really funny but kind and respectful.
Morris was ok. Sometimes seemed like he was really unsure of himself. He didnt really teach conceptually and just did a bunch of examples on the board so you basically had to hope the same type of problem was going to be on the test or you were screwed. I had to do a lot of self teaching. Graded by 2 midterms (relatively easy) and 1 final.
Funny guy but doesn't quite know what he's doing at times. Sometimes explains simple concepts in a roundabout way and makes things more complicated than necessary. Exams are entirely free response (6-10 questions) and are rather challenging, even with prior AP Calc BC experience. Wouldn't recommend w/o prior integral calculus experience.
Midterms were easy-medium they looked like the practice exams on his website. Final was so hard it dropped my grade 12%
Morris is a great guy but not a great professor. He relies on pure examples to help you understand what's happening in the class. Your grade is based off 2 midterms and 1 final. I thought all three were hard and its very stressful that hw doesn't count as a grade. Only take if you're strong in calculus.
Morris is a very funny and nice guy. His lectures are mostly examples that he explains pretty well, but often the midterms are not like the examples from class. There is no graded homework, and the class is graded on 2 midterms and a final. The final was really hard (dropped my grade 11%) and the curve is not great at all.
Good teacher, tells lots of jokes and makes class go by quick. Lectures are helpful and tests mostly stick to the practice problems.
Dr. Morris is one of the best Prof.'s I have had at Davis. It is true, each class he has a story to tell and they are hilarious. They are also timed and set up in a way that they flow well with lecture. He cares about his students and is super friendly in OH. Midterms are a mix of problems from HW and lecture,so I recommend going to class.
Took Combinatorics to prepare for Probability Theory class. Ben emphasized the way using binary string to solve out problems. He is humorous as telling a story every class, and very friendly in office hours. Second midterm was challenging, but for final, as long as you review all notes and concepts, HW and practice exams, you will do very well.
An awesome and funny professor in MAT 145. He brings a joke to the lectures every day. He also posts all the lecture notes and homework, exam solutions on canvas which are great tools for preparing the exams. His office hour was also very helpful. Plus, he is somehow a handsome guy XD!
Ben is a great prof who is hilarious. This class is seriously curved (and the curve is mentioned at the beginning of the course) and pretty fun. He is very nice and quite accessible if you need help. Midterms are hard but the final was not quite as bad.
I failed calc in HS but Ben makes it straightforward and easy to understand. He's a funny instructor who makes an effort to learn people's names so try to participate! This class is not easy and requires a lot of time outside of class. Go to every class, do all of the homework, and study A LOT to do well on tests. My A- curved to an A.
Prof. Morris was very funny and his lectures always kept my attention. While I believe his TA graded a little harsh, this class was relatively easy. Definitely recommend taking him.
this man cannot teach. he goes so slow on problems that he takes half the class to do one, which in turn puts him behind. when he is behind, he then skips out on some material and expects us to know it already. his webwork homework is useless and harder than what he teaches and he does not teach us stuff for the homework.
Each question on his tests were worth so many points that if you missed one problem, it would be bring your grade down by a whole letter. Takes forever to do problems during lecture... Just go for Kouba
Trust me, hes not as hard as everyone says he is on here. Yes, his tests are worth a lot of points, but theyre fair game. He teaches a lot of them in class and the practice problem exams are a good indicator of what the midterm/ final is going to be on. Ben Is super straightforward and isnt here to try to fail you guys. Must put in effort tho.
Excellent professor! His practice exam is really useful and style of questions is very similar, especially final exam. Although he doesn't provide solutions for the final practice exam, it's strongly recommended to discuss the solution with your classmates or friends before the examination. GPA booster!
Really funny guy and made lecture fun! His exams were very similar to the practice exams he posts and the he taught the material in a way that made it straightforward. But you HAVE to go to lecture. After a bad 16A experience, Morris was amazing. Homework can be tedious at times, but only worth 10% of the grade. Great teacher for calculus!
Morris has no foundation or character. He's a wimp, who lets his students basically run his class. Don't know how he got his degree bc he can't teach for shet. He doesn't curve and beware, if you send an email, he won't reply until a month later - basically until end of quarter. He may seem nice but trust this, he's got no balls and no credentials.
idk what this dude wants, he teaches the most basic things, then gives the hardest hw which is irrelevant to what he taught. Then on tests, it seems easy with just 6 problems but each are worth like 24 points. I hope he sees this review and others so he knows what a bad "professor" he is. I hope he can learn from it bc he obviously can't teach.
Easy Professor, a lot of the material is very easy and he uses simple examples during class.
He was a very simple lecturer and did a lot of examples in class that were similar to the test questions. There was a lot of homework and some problems were more difficult than the ones on tests or examples in class. He tries to tell stories halfway through class to give a break which is cool.
Honestly one of the best math prof in Davis. His lectures are good and easy to understand. He always reviews material before an exam. The last two days of class were spent reviewing for the final. DO ALL OF HIS PRACTICE TESTS! His exams are like the practice. I only studied using the practice tests and got a B/B- avg on hw. Still got an A overall.
After a horrible 16a experience, this guy was a gem! He put the most simplest questions on the midterms, and only like 10 questions. He's really funny and an engaging lecturer. The hw was challenging but thats what the calc room is for! The only thing I wish was different was that the midterm questions weren't worth so much points.
I found lectures to be for the most part easy to understand. He makes jokes throughout lecture and works with his students. Webwork was annoying (but manageable) and he would push the due date to help us if it was too difficult. Tests seemed pretty okay, definitely not horrible. I am not even that great at math, & this class didn't ruin me. Take!
I will put the conclusion first: Take him if you want an A. BUT you might not learn as much after taking his class. I can assure that this guy's curve is crazy!!! Like I messed up with my first midterm and somewhat bombed my final, but it finally turns out that I am an A?
3 tests including final, all really short so the questions were worth a lot. Online homework was harder than the tests. He lacks a command of the class which is annoying when people talk or pack up early. Tells a funny joke same time each class like clockwork.
My only complaint about his class was that our assigned HW was often 2 weeks behind what we were actually covering in class. Otherwise, his exams are straightforward, he has a great sense of humor, and I learned a lot. HW is neither collected nor graded but is necessary to do well on quizzes. Grade is based on weekly quizzes, 2 midterms, and final.
He's a solid calc teacher. His lectures can get a bit disorganized and confusing, and there are only 3 tests including the final, but with self-direction an A is easily attainable. The difficulty matches homework/practice tests, grading is fair (a bit generous even). Weekly quizzes are hit or miss, completely controlled by the TA.
can seem a bit disorganized, but show up to lecture and do the homework and the midterms are a walk in the park. Midterms and final were short, easy, and straight up. Funny guy with stories every lecture, and a good teacher overall.
he can be a bit confusing in lectures, but he is a great guy who will want to make you pass. I had him for honors and he seemed to really care about his students. You have to read the textbook to really understand the material and be prepared to have a lot of hw, but it's all due at the end of the quarter. he is a solid choice!
Our grade was made up of 5 Quizzes, 2 Midterms, 1 Final. Funny guy but lectures were hard to follow sometimes. Not enough time for quizzes. The final exam was extremely hard, some of the problems we didn't learn in class. Also, this class did not prepare us well for 135B. There's a lot of missing material we needed to know beforehand.
I don't know what he is talking about most of time in his class, and he and his TA are not responsible since they just post the answer for the practice exam on canvas. BUT THIS CLASS SUPPOSED TO BE A JUSTIFY CLASS.
Great professor and a very nice guy. Straightforward and exams are fair. Enjoyed his lectures and the breaks he gives by telling jokes. Need to attend lecture and do the homework. Would definitely take another class with him.
Dude seriously your lectures need to be more organized... It's a mess
Really. Take this guy's class. If I could have him teach the ENTIRE 21 series I would. I'd stress myself on the HW (graded by completion + multiple attempts), and the tests and quizzes would be absolute CASH. Like "what is the integral of 7x" kind of cash. Tells hilarious storytimes halfway through lectures. Love the guy + his TA's.
Super sweet guy, who is hilarious! Looked forward to his 'storytimes'. I had a really hard math teacher during high school, and his class compared to it, was a breeze. He's not extra and makes you do the necessary, no-frills. Accessible out of class when you remind him of his office hours/spam him with emails, and really cares for his students.
I was skeptical by the low reviews at first but Morris for 21B is easy AF. My highschool calculus class was wayyyyy harder than this class. The test and quizzes are easier than the WebWork (basically homework) problems, that's how easy it is. Overall, he is a chill and funny teacher. His lectures have halfway intermissions where he has story time.
This professor is very good. No midterms. Quizzes come from homework. Short tests have two problems, and are much easier than homework. Homework can ask for extension. Extra credits are easy to receive.
Dr. Morris is great! This class was taken over Zoom, but the videos he made were amazing and explained every concept in-depth and with clarity. In lecture, he also explains things really well. The homework is difficult but what's nice is that Morris is fair; the test questions are always easier than the HW. So if you do the homework well you get A+
The pprofessor is nice and kind, and aslo amused. Final and Tests are easy if you prepared well for the test.
Professor Morris is a great guy and I really enjoyed his funny story halfway through the lecture. This class is an easy A if you already took calculus in high school. Sometimes the lectures don't cover the content included in the homework so you have to read the textbook or look the problem up. Quizzes and short tests are very similar to the hw.
He's definitely the best and the most warm hearted professor ever since. He will make make-up quizzes and extend ddlThe homework is a little bit hard but you have unlimited attempts to try the answer, so you could get every homework 100 percent right. Quizzes, short tests, and finals are extremely easy. Group assignments suck. Find good teammate.
Easy A. Take him if you can.
Let me summarise it for you. I learned nothing. Lectures are nothing like homework or tests. Totally forgot a pandemic is going on. Doesn't drop any scores. Hillarious but his jokes won't help me with my studies. Always confused about the material. Makes excuses all the time to get away with his incompetence. His cUrVe turned my 94% into a B+.
Professor Morris was very sweet, caring and passionate. His homeworks were quite difficult and a lot but his tests are relatively fair and easy. He taught ok, one would have to self study a lot, but he was always willing to answer any questions about homework and other problems. Overall, a great professor!
Professor Morris is a great period! Super accessible outside the class. He gave 2 hours of office hour per week and his TA could answer questions after discussions. Tests and quizzes are placed on a daily basis so get ready to work. However, that stuff is just easy. Long story short, this course is an easy A (or even A+) if u work enough.
No midterm, short tests or quizzes each week. Homework is very hard, it takes many hours each week. Short Tests(2 questions) and Quizzes(one question from homework) are very easy. One thing I don't like is Discussion Worksheets, because it's useless and group projects, and it cannot drop lowest grade. Final 20%, if you get bad grades, no A for you.
No MT, short tests or quizzes each week. Homework is very hard, it takes many hours each week. Short Tests(2 questions) and Quizzes(one question from homework) are very easy. Discussion Worksheets is in group, it's useless, and it didn't drop lowest grade. Final 20%, if you get bad grades, I got A+ 97% can turns to B. For high gpa, don't take it!!!
Took this class remote. HW is extremely time consuming. Morris assigns short tests/quizzes which are very easy. Prone to making mistakes in his lectures and his grading. Reviews about Prof's harsh curve omit that he turned in a grade change petition later because he (again) made a mistake in his grading. Despite mistakes, he's understanding & kind
I would definitely recommend him. The hw was SUPER hard but we had unlimited attempts, so you could get 100% there if you wanted to. The weekly tests/quizzes were SOO easy, taken straight from the lecture problems. The final wasnt as easy as the tests but more similar to the group assignments. Overall, Morris is a great professor and really cares.
Take his course. Period!
I am a Math major and I can confirm he is actually one of the easiest math professors out there. I am not saying he is easy but comparing other math professors out there, it can be wayyyy.. worst. This is college therefore you need to put the time on every math course you take for a good grade.
Professor Morris isn't the best at explaining things but the concepts in this class weren't too difficult, especially if you took BC in high school. Exams were 50% but were extremely simple. Although there are only two problems on each test so be careful, same with quizzes. The HW is time consuming but you have unlimited attempts so it's doable.
Morris has good reviews because he is funny (which he is). Unfortunately, he is not the best at explaining concepts and gives so much homework that takes so many hours. He does have OH, but they are not that helpful. he likes to skip the algebra part of calculus which I am the worst at.
I've never struggled with math until I had Morris. The lecture videos seem simple then he throws ridiculously complex problems at us in live lecture without explaining them clearly and does not teach how to SOLVE problems in a way that we can apply them to others. The homework is very hard and time-consuming. OH are just as useless as the lectures.
Professor Morris' lectures were a little disorganized but if you took calculus in high school this class is really easy. The weekly quizzes are based on the homework and the tests were very short and easy. He put the easiest types of problems from the unit on the tests and final. The homework was hard but unlimited tries.
Professor Morris does not explain concepts well. The videos that he made us watch before every lecture is super confusing because he doesn't specify where he got the numbers. Homework is extremely long; one of them has 40 problems so be prepared! Quizzes are decent and take up a lot of your grade. The stuff on the quiz is mostly taken from the hw.
He teaches okay, better than most teachers here. He tells crazy stories. His quizzes aren't too bad. Discussion worksheets (group work) are hardest to do, so you better get a good group. Homework might be too much sometimes, but they're mostly simple problems. There's also engagement points (earn points by finding friends and making videos). 3/5
his quizzes and tests are incredibly easy. as long as you can do everything on the practice problem worksheets and understand all the examples in the textbook, ur pretty much set for the quizzes. final was also easy. homework can get overwhelming though but nothing too bad (there's one with 40 questions). overall, i would say it's a p easy class
Literally 50% of your entire grade is determined by 5 quizzes. Morris has a lot of audacity to weight quizzes this much when he can't even teach. The lectures are very disorganized and half of the time, Morris stutters his way through easyexamples. You won't pass unless you're good at self-teaching. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU VALUE YOUR GPA!
During lectures, we only go through practice questions, so prepare for self-teaching. The lectures seemed disorganized. Quizzes (5 total; 30 mins) and the final are relatively simple. Weekly WeBWork assignments varied from 15-40 problems. Discussion worksheets are the most challenging, and are done in groups, so you'd be lucky to get a good group.
Does not teach, expects you to figure out the course by using the textbook and his lackluster notes. Your better off using an outside resource than attending his lectures.
Extremely hard homework but makes up for it with easy tests (some are copied)! If you study the homework well, youll get an A in the class. Also, he tells funny stories in class for 1-3 minutes during lecture, and its a nice break in between doing problems. Discussion worksheets are difficult but are group work. They usually arent on his tests.
Holysmokes I'm taking 21c with QXia & my first weeks with him makes me appreciate Morris so much more. I miss him so much. Morris puts the effort explaining the theories/concepts in videos and during lectures go over homework examples. 2HWs due on sun & thurs, unlimited attempts. QXia: 2 HWs on tues & thurs, strict # of attempts, and sleep deprivat
(I took calc BC in HS): the lectures are clear and straightforward but the homework is more difficult. The quizzes are simple and similar to lecture examples so if you can finish the homework (you'll need to self study for using the internet and textbook), the quizzes will be easy A's which make up for the homework. overall, a good class.
The curve saved me. Ended up with an 87% in the class, but I think an 86+ was an A this quarter. Lots of HW, but quizzes are v similar. The final HOWEVER had stuff that we haven't done before. Average of the final was around 53%. Group discussion sheets were a pain, so make sure you get a good group. TAs grade the disc sheets pretty harsh.
Super funny and nice! The lectures went over practice problems and he had additional videos explaining concepts quickly. Homework was time-consuming and difficult, group work was so draining (get a good group!), but it prepared you for quizzes. Half of the quizzes were simple and half were hard, while the final was pretty challenging. Solid curve.
Overall, so sweet, so caring, if you need more time on an assignment, he's okay with it. Reasonable quizzes, hard homework that makes you think (use UCD tutoring, I did that), but always does his best. Ngl he's a little scatterbrained at times, like having online technical issues. I'd give him a 4.5/5 if I could, so amazing, I love him.
I like professor Morris, he is really nice. He always tells jokes during lectures. His midterms and finals are fair, they are not similar to the practice midterms, probably only 1 or 2 questions are kinda same.
Entire class graded by 2 midterms and a final, but doesn't provide much review material. Assigns a lot of optional HW/teaches from an older textbook not under equitable access. Lectures were kinda awkward/unorganized, and he's not great at teaching (often skips explaining why and ignores questions in class). Good luck if you have him fr
Honestly, he doesn't teach well. Whenever you have a question, he doesn't know how to answer you say a few things and move on without answering your questions. Practice midterms/finals a lot easier than actual ones. They are similar but he always has harder equations on the tests.
Morris asks for your name every time you have a question or answer and will memorize it if you participate a lot. He always tries to slip in a small story in each lecture and they can be fun. Class was based on 2 midterms and final, homework isn't required and honestly this class doesn't take much of your time. If you do past exams you'll do good.
Professor Morris was very relaxed and was a pretty good teacher. Class grade was based only on midterms and finals which weren't too bad. Final was easier than midterms and he taught pretty well and was easy to understand.
If you need to take him, then take him otherwise I would try to get on a waitlist for other teachers. His tests are graded poorly and graded based on the answer and not wether or not you had the right process and there's no graded homework three test which total up to 90% of your grade. HIs lectures arent great could be better just watching videos
Lectures are bad, so boring and he does not teach well, ur better off just learning on your own. often goes off on random useless tangents, tests literally make up all of your grade (40% final, 25% each mt, 10% quizzes.) Midterms were similar to practice midterm minus a few questions which were the hardest, but he barely gives any partial credit.
Professor Morris includes a fun story or joke during lecture which always brightens the mood. His teaching is okay, gives lots of examples in class that are similar to tests. The final and midterms are fair if you studied hard.
Don't take this dude. lectures have nothing to do with tests. tests are graded strangely. there is no curve on the test but the final letter grade gets adjusted. but he doesn't tell u what he's adjusting it to. so you actually have no idea what your grade is until its final. could be a RNG for a grade and I wouldn't be able to tell. AVOID!!
Studied the entire content on my own since his teaching style did not suite me. He uploaded videos on canvas explaining the all the topics accompanying with an example. I liked the stories he added into the lectures, they were hilarious.
u barely get any partial credit in this class and there are very few questions on midterms+final+quizzes. also graded on 50% (2 midterms) and 40% final with 10% quizzes. i dont think the material was hard but its moreso that you can make very little mistakes. the tests are mainly focused on if you got the answer not the steps.
Professor Morris is the best 21B professor. As long as you complete the homework and practice tests, the exams will be comparatively easier. He grades the course fairly, and he has a generous cutoff for students to pass the class.
grades were almost entirely determined by two midterms and a final. he kind of introduces rather than actually explains concepts during lecture, and the examples he gives during lecture are much less difficult than the examples from (non mandatory) homework and exams. grading criteria was also kind of weird
The best math professor i have met
Homework is not mandatory, but weekly quizzes depend on it. Grade is based all on tests. The lecture only goes over concepts and easy problems. Midterm and Final didn't match up to the homework or weekly quizzes at all. They were way harder and random.
Terrible professor, rating needs to be lower. Terrible lectures, weekly quizzes in discussions.TAs are tough graders and partial credit is non-existent on exams, which results in way lower grades. Test grades are not curved at all. Final overall grade is curved like 5%. Midterms and finals are nothing like the practices and are way too hard.
All graded by 3 exams (2MT, 1Final). Expect minimal partial credit, so dont make any calculation mistakes because each question you have 10 mins on is worth like 10% of your grade and if you make a calc error, you lose most points. He's genuine and kind, but he couldn't seem to fix his mic throughout the whole quarter which is very painful.
Lectures recorded, but mostly self studied the lecture notes (textbook style) that he uses. If you understand that and practice exams well, then you should be set for the exams since the exam problems are similar or easier. Grading is kinda a bummer since mistakes could cost a good portion of grade (2 small mistakes cost me 5% of final grade :/).
Professor Morris makes 21B manageable with his engaging lectures and fair grading. Consistent practice on homework and Unstuck ai quizzes is key to acing the exams. Worth the effort!
Honestly, i dont know why people are saying his grading is crazy its really not, hes one of the better 21b professors and the sample exams he provides are pretty similar to the real one. Quizzes arent that crazy either. Ended with a b- when I had like a 67%, take the class trust.
Easiest midterm of my life
Tells the best jokes during class, and makes the class structure very attention grabbing. The coursework is graded purely on 3 tests with homework and quizzes optional for practice. Very kind and very funny professor, always has a smile on his face, makes my week truly better. Tests are not too difficult he prepares well with study review content.
Final was incredibly difficult and not a fair representation of what was actually taught
The final was extremely brutal, and was way harder than what was taught in class and was nothing compared to the practice review.
Final was something else, might have bombed it….
Wouldn't recommend taking this professor for 21B. Doesn't seem to have a grasp on the concepts he's teaching and wastes time in lectures on top of always ending class early. Midterms are fair but the final was not a good representation of what we learned in class. There aren't a lot of good options for 21B but I'd go with a different professor.
The final was cruel. And the fact that it's worth 50% of your grade is just mean. All his practice tests and reviews did not prepare us for what was on the final.
He taught well but didn't prepare so he was scattered during lectures. 2 midterms and a final make up your grade. I was sick and missed midterm 2, so my final was worth 75% of my grade, which was stressful. Homework and quizzes don't count for anything. Practice exams were from over a decade ago and sometimes not accurate, especially the final.
The final is worth 50% of your grade and made the final really really hard and was nothing compared to what he taught us in lectures. Also he gives us practice tests but they are really outdated and isn't anything compared to the tests he gives us. I don't even know if he curves really good.
Please don't tske this professor if you have other options. The grading system is all tests, 25 percent midterm 1, 25 percent midterm 2, 50 percent final, and the final is so hard and nothing compared to what he teaches.
You should not take this professor, his grading is completely focused on tests and if you do badly in one, you won't recover.
The final is very hard and it is worth 50% of the overall grade. It is completely different from the practice test which is from 15 years ago.
This class is so hard especially the final, I would not recommend this class for 21B, if you have other options. The final is 50%, and the professor also makes the final really hard.
I think he's great and inspiring. The lectures, the midterms, no graded homework and he's really trying to engage with the classroom. But there is this final, which explained by the bad ratings. I wonder if we upset him during the quarter.
Morris is a very nice professor and his midterms are not bad, however, his final was very bad. He basically doesn't give any partial points, and the practice exam compared the final was very different. as someone who had a B in the class before the final, I might actually fail..
Stutters literally every 2-3 seconds, lecture material is 10x easier then what we're actually expected to know, wastes class time on boring stories, ends class early for no reason, final exam was disgustingly unfair to his students as it did not display anything that was taught in lectures, or in the practice exams, that are as old as you and I
Morris was a good teacher, the material in 21B cannot be learned from just 3, 50 minute lectures a week. His lectures were helpful but do not go into depth. The first two midterms were manageable but the final was shockingly hard. From what I have heard it's curved generously so I have high hopes.
The final was really hard, studied for the math final for almost a week, and still found the final hard. The final was nothing like the review and wasn't a representation of what he taight in class. I am hoping he curves the final a lot, hopefully 15-20%.
The final got me praying to god, I felt like I did so bad that I don't know what might happen. Hopefully he gives us a really generous curve
The professor does not give any partial credit, even if you showed work and your approach to the answer was close enough, you barley get any partial credit and the final was so hard, the toughest questions I have seen so far.
Hardest final I've ever taken at Davis so far, considering I've taken chem for 2 quarters. I studied for at least 15-20 hours and I don't think it helped at all.
Hardest final I have taken hopefully he has a really generous curve like my chemistry class.
Grade was based on 2 midterms + 1 final. Each were difficult. No partial credit given, and no similar to the practice ones available. Lectures were on canvas but often did upload or had issues with audio. Funny guy but pretty crap prof. Wouldn't take unless you have to.
I'm really scared for my final grade and don't even know how generous of a curve it is, like I know some of my classes be curving like 20-25 percent
The final was extremely hard. He only gave one practice final and while it did cover most of the course content the actual final didn't. And having that worth 50% of your grade is just brutal. The midterms were nothing compared to the final... not to mention you have to self study because his lectures are hard to follow.
The midterms were easy enough with enough studying done using the practice exams - both were worth 25% each, but the final was 50% and the hardest final I've taken, nothing like the practice, with light coverage from lectures. Had it not have been for that, he would've been decent, but it was completely unfair and a major spike in difficulty.
The final has a mean of 49.5 percent
Please curve our grades by 20 percent the final literally had a mean of 49 percent
Overall did not teach very well, was hard to follow. The class was only graded by 2 midterms and 1 final. The midterms were decent but the final was extremely difficult and nothing similar to what was taught in class or practice exams from previous years. The average for the final was 49% and little partial credit is given. Would not take again.
please curve our final grades by 25% the final was terrible
This professor gives barley any partial credit, I'm hoping he gives us like a 20 percent curve because the final had a mean of 49 percent
Skip this professor. Morris was a nice guy but this class is just terrible. 25% of your grade is from midterm one, 25% from midterm two, and 50% from your final, which had an average score of 49.5. Not only is the grading system difficult, but the final was awful, it was completely different from what we had on practice tests and in homework.
Don't take this professor if you have options for other professors. The grading system is all tests and the final is worth 50 percent of your grade. The final was so hard that it was nothing compared to the ancient practice final he gave us and was nothing like what he taught us in class having a mean of 49 percent. We need a 20 percent curve.
The final is very hard, I got both A at the midterm but fail in final. Before final, I'm sure I will get A, but after final i'm wondering, can I pass the class? Average is 49% in our final
I took the midterms and they were somewhat fair, but then there came the final which was extremly difficult, and had amean of 49 percent. I amreally scared for my final grade, please don't take this professor if you have other options. He meakes the final really brutal, and its also worth 50 percent of your grade.
The final had a mean of 49 percent and a median of 47 percent, that's how bad and difficult the final was.
If you mess up on the final it will cost you a lot, the final is really difficult, and is worth 50 percent of your grade.
Dont take his class if you have other options. He doesn't teach well, ends class early, spends 5 minutes giving jokes every class. Also, he gives us reviews that are like 15 years old and is nothing compared to the tests he gives us, especially the final. The final was extremely brutal, with a mean of 49 percent and a median of 47 percent.
He did not prepare us for the final what so ever, put the most hardest questions on the final, and wasn't able to solve every question. I'm really scared for my grade, hope he gives us a 25 percent curve.
The professor barley gives any partial credit even when you have shown so much work and is so close to the answer. The final was something else, the questions were extremly difficult, nothing like the ancient practice final he gave us, was not a good representation of the basic stuff he taught us in class.
Give us a 25 percent curve please, the final literally had a mean of 49 percent
Im scared for my life because of the final. The hardest final I have taken so far at Davis.
hardest final bruh, mean of 49 percent
Scared for my life.....
Spends half the class giving jokes and ends the class early, and then decides to give the hardest final ever.
homework is optional, your whole grade is from midterms and the final, which are very difficult. he doesn't really teach in lecture, sorta goes over examples but doesn't explain well.
I have never in my 18 years of learning felt so horrible after a final, I was mentally assaulted and wanted to curl up in my bed and cry. Do not take him unless you want to feel horrible and ruin your mental health. I hope he curves at least 30-35 percent. That final was a joke.
Take his class only if you want to have a stressful and bad mental health. I studied for his final for so long and when I came to take the final, it was really hard, hopefully he curves by 25 percent. He mademy mental health really bad.
Bro does not let us see our grade on canvas
His lecture just gives examples rather than explains things well, so get ready to learn on your own. The grade is composed by 25% per midterm and 50% for final. The midterms are good because the problems are relevant to the homework, but the final is extremely hard and irrelevant to the homework and practice exam. Grading policy is not reasonable.
Professor Morris teaches the material through showing examples which I liked, his TA's are also great, this class is test focused, made up of 2 midterms and 1 final, the midterms were fair, the final was very challenging. The curve is also fair, a 54% was a C.
Midterm 1 and 2 were very easy and going into the final I had an A in the class. However, the final was unreasonably difficult, and it did not help that the final counted toward 50 percent of our grade. Average for the final was 49 percent, but there was a pretty generous curve of about 20 percent that left me with a B- overall grade.
This class was the absolute worst. I did well on the midterms and messed up on the final ending with a C+. The amount of effort I poured into this class all went to vain with an insanely hard final. As someone who did lots of practice, every hw and practice exam, I am severely disappointed and crashing out. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!
Agonizing final exam, but curved well. His lectures effectively introduce the concepts but HW and final were so hard. He often ends class too early and he can't really afford to do so. He does not provide enough practice materials for the final, which sucks since the final is worth 50%. Midterms were fair (scored 100 and 93) but the final ended me.
wastd 2 hours at the final tbh
Horrible final, worth 50 percent of the grade, wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy to have to deal with Benjamin morris.
Save yourself the trouble and don't even take him. Horrible final, study guides were from decades ago. Didn't match the final at all.
Horrible experience, if you want to enjoy Davis stay away from this professor.
I don't understand how people like this can become professors at a UC.
Horrible teaching, final made no sense at all. Worst professor ever!!!
Graded entirely by exams, 25% for each midterm and 50% for the final. Optional homework is provided and ungraded quizzes in discussion. Lecture was pretty quick and explanations weren't always clear. Final was very difficult but the class was curved. Overall not the worst professor, do textbook problems and as much extra practice as possible
The grading consisted of 50% on a final and 50% for 2 midterms. This was already bad enough but the practice exams given were more then a decade old so you're betting maybe 50-75 percent of those practice will actually be in your test. Furthermore, the final was atrocious even when curves were given leading to just stress throughout the quarter.
Don't take this class please
Don't take his course. Extremely irresponsible instructor.
Final was simply unfair, midterms were pretty fair. Preparation materials are usually insufficient and don't reflect the difficulty on the exam. Homework is fairly difficult but isn't graded, discussion isn't graded.
I passed with a 48.8%, the final cutoff/curve is generous but no curves were given for the two midterms (50% of the grade) and the final (50%). Homework is very helpful, his teaching is very aligned with the textbook so it is best you review the section after class and go to office hours. The exams are hard as they focus on very specific topics.
Take Prof Morris if there's no other teacher available. His explanations and reasonings for problems were very difficult to understand. You'll need to teach yourself the materials outside of class: his lectures are all over the place. Grading is 50% midterms 50% final. Clutched an A by doing his practice tests over and over again.
You will have to teach yourself material outside of this class, his lectures weren't super detailed and tended to be all over the place. The midterms and final make up your entire grade, with the final being 50% and the two midterms being 25% each. Final was unfair, and he is super slow to answer emails. No extra credit, homework is not graded.
Real interesting guy, felt incompetent at times but I had a fine time understanding the topics at least. Homework is not graded but it is necessary because it helps you work out the technicalities of what u learned and u need to memorize a lot. He went pretty savage on us for the final, we all thought it was over but there was a fat curve.
terrible lecture with terrible strategy,
The midterms were both incredibly easy, but final was just outrageously difficult. Ended the class with a 74 which was curved to an A-, but regardless of the exams, I felt like I didn't learn much in the class. A lot of the examples he gives were brief, to where concepts like IBP, improper integrals, trig sub, were never taught with enough care.
This was probably one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. A part of it was my fault for not doing enough studying outside of class, but Professor Morris was also just a really mediocre professor. That wouldn't have been a big problem if he hadn't made the final extremely hard in comparison to the midterms.
Day 1, we learned more about his sister's surrogacy than we did about integrals. We covered ~2 problems in the whole class and the problems that we did in class were just poorly explained versions of the exact same sample problems taken from the textbook. Tests were supposed to be on ~8 to 11 chapters and only had material from ~2 chapters total.
Morris is knowledgeable and passionate about 135B. His lectures were recorded and heavily based on the textbook. The tests were difficult, but so long as you understood the homework and practice exams, you should do well. Morris is the funniest professor I have ever had, and I found myself looking forward to lecture daily.
Almost every lecture was stopped halfway through for him to tell a short funny story, which was the highlight. I thought he explained things well and was very chill and kind. However, our grade was completely based on tests: 25% Midterm 1, 25% Midterm 2, and 50% final. The curve was decent, though, considering my final grade. The final was terrible
He is a good at teaching in lecture, but the midterms and final are nothing like the practice and wayyyy harder than any problems he ever goes over. Studied for hours and still didn't pass because of how hard his tests were, if you can take a different 21b professor!
