Great teacher, very helpful, always there if you need extra help. Passionate about the subject. Tests can be a but tough but as long as you follow his study guides you will be fine. All in all a great teacher
He was the best! I was not a big psych person before but he made the topic so interesting and enjoyable. I am sad to have to leave the class because he was such a great teacher!!!
All in all, an excellent teacher! He made the class very interesting and fun. Could not have asked for a better psych teacher. From what I have heard from other students taking P101, he is definitely the best and most interesting. Loved his class!!
He was very informative and willing to help everyone in his class. I loved his examples.
great professor--keeps the class fun, but isnt a pushover. is more than willing to listen and help and always takes the blame and fixes an problems--- great class!
Fun class, funny professor, and you actually learn something in here.
Ben Motz is a great teacher and he makes the class really fun. If you are at all interested in Psychology I strongly suggest you take this class!!!
I took psych because a friend wanted to; I thought I hated it, until I actually started the class! The professor is great--engaging, helpful, and easy to understand; he has great examples and fun demonstrations. The course material is really interesting, too.
GREAT professor! He's very understanding and helpful. The class is so easy if you just follow the notes and study for exams. He's not boring at all and is considerate of how the students feel about the course.
Ben Motz is definitely, hands down, the best teacher I have had so far at IU. I can't say enough nice things about him! Your grade in P211 is mostly based on several research papers. It can feel very overwhelming at times, but Ben really did everything that he could to help us through the process. Take his classes if you can!
Great Prof. Always available to help students. Will go the extra mile to make sure students understand material. Wish I would have had him for Cog. Psych. Makes a boring research class fun. Take a class with Ben if you get the chance.
BEST PROF AT IU :) very interesting class. makes sure students understand material.
Wonderful professor. Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable about course topics, and consistently available for consultation. Interesting to talk to during office hours.
Great Professor, although the material he teaches is hard to study for. Find the material very boring, but he's super nice and fun.
HE IS AMAZING!!!! I have had him for other classes, and he always helps when you need it. I would recommend this class to anyone! AND NO BOOK = AWESOME!!!
Best class I've taken at IU! Ben's the most enthusiatist prof you'll ever meet. He knows how to make the material interesting, and the grades are fair.
P211 inherently kind of sucks (because of all the papers you have to write), but Ben is great! He makes the lectures interesting. Very likeable professor!!! But basically in P211 your lab instructor is your teacher. They grade all your work except for a couple of quizzes in lecture.
He makes class fun. I switched my major halfway through the semester when I took this class, but I was still interested. We learned a lot of cool things.
Great Teacher. He is really interested in what he teaches and is very enthusiastic. He gives out study guides for all tests and quizzes. Do the study guides and you will get a good grade. Some sections are mandatory and some are not.
I really liked his teaching style. He made sure to engage his students in the material. I also liked that the class implemented many different ways to show that we learned the information than just through the traditional test. You should definitely take this class with Motz.
He definitely makes class interesting. No textbook, which saves $$. You do two group projects but they are extremely easy. Class is only mandatory while working on the projects. He gives study guides for all the quizes and exams. It's an easy A.
Ben is the best professor I've ever had at IU. He makes class very enjoyable, and I was lucky enough to be able to start my week off with his course this semester. I hope to be able to take more classes from this instructor in the future.
Hands down the best professor at IU. I have taken classes in SPEA, Kelley, Chemistry, almost every college and have never come across a professor on the same level as Ben. Hes knowledgeable, helpful, funny and makes lecture something you actually look forward to. Extremely fair tests and exams. He understands tests are there to help, not trick you.
great lecturer, incredibly articulate, knows the material very well. One of my favorite psych professors.
Ben is the best teacher I've had thus far at IU. He is funny, knowledgeable, and fair. He makes class interesting. I had his class at 9 am on Monday morning and I actually looked forward to going every week. Take any class that you can from this professor. However, the lab reports are boring to write but graded VERY easily (fairly).
Funny and clear though I got more personal with my lab instructor. Ben gives the information for the next assignments while the graduate teachers really try and help you make an experiment.
Professor Motz is awesome- this class was relatively easy if you went to class and got the notes. Tests are fair and there are two group projects that aren't bad at all... He is really into the subject material and that definitely translates to his teaching! Def take a class with him... also NO TEXTBOOK
ben is amazing!! definitely take this class.. he makes everything so fun/ he is so nice and a great guy. so helpful!!! worth it!!! AMAZING
BEST TEACHER EVER. seriously, he makes lectures fun to attend while teaching you everything you need to know. He makes topics interesting which makes it really easy to understand them. Class is only mandatory for specific weeks during the semester, but you will want to go to class because its so entertaining!
Ben was fantastic! I really wish I would have been able to take cognitive psych with him. He's probably the most entertaining lecturer I've had in college. Good class.
best profesor i've had so far at IU...the class is required you might as well make it worth your time w/ him
Ben was a great professor! He explained the material clearly and the exams were fair. He made coming to class enjoyable. The group projects were even fun!
the best teacher ever. for a required class this is the only one i WANTED to come to. he makes the lectures interesting and the information was really easy to understand after listening to him. this was my second class with him and i wish i could take more.
Inexperienced. Expects students to gather an unfair amount of random participants and do the experiment in ONE WEEK and then write the paper in a week. Expects too much from students when they have exams and other things for other classes. Grading is highly unfair and the TAs are uncaring.
Amazing professor. I had him for P211 and Cognitive Psych. Keeps lecture interesting and interactive. Very easy to talk to and ask questions, even in big lectures. If you have him for Cognitive, print out the study guides and fill them out during lecture. Best way to take notes and makes it easier on you later.
Great professor! Class is really entertaining and the material is interesting. For the most part the class is pretty easy, although the material can get a bit confusing; however he does a great job at explaining it. 1st exam is a little difficult, but not too bad. Then they get easier. great class!
Ok let's be real... Ben is the best professor I have ever had. I attended Purdue and transferred here and I have never had a professor who cared so much about the topic. He makes it so interesting! Attendance isn't mandatory but I go anyway because I LOVE the class. Awesome teacher and fair grader. You'd be crazy not to take his class!
Easy class, but too easy. Also the group projects were unbearably dumb. Nice guy though that cares about his students.
Without a doubt, Ben Motz is the best professor I have ever had! He is amazing and his lectures are really interesting. I have never seen a professor so enthusiastic about teaching a course. You will find yourself wanting to go to class because he is teaching, and it isn't hard to get a good grade. If there is space in his class you're lucky!
great professor, great lecturer, but i hate this course. while i get a lot out of lectures, the lab section is tedious and unreasonably long, and the coursework itself I HATE passionately. ALL OF THAT ASIDE, he's a wonderful professor, easy because he's so good at explaining things without being dull. if you get a chance, take a course from him.
Professor Motz is great at explaining things! He understands when students fail to comprehend and does his best to explain the information as clear as possible. He is always willing to help his students!
One word sums him up: EXCELLENT. P211 is mostly run by your lab instructor- but I had the pleasure of taking P335 with Motz too, and I would highly recommend him. His enthusiasm is contagious. He makes boring topics interesting, and he makes somewhat-interesting topics enthralling. Highly effective teaching methods. Go to class- you'll want to!
Ben is a great teacher for 335. He gets the concepts across in funny memorable ways, and always has the AI's hold review sessions before tests.
He loves the subject matter, and he really cares what students think. He is the only professor who will actually ask what you think. One thing that I noticed in the class is that all the lab instructors grade very differently. Lisa is amazing! Just keep on your papers, and get it revised. Have your lab instructor work on it, and you should get an A
His lecture sessions were very informative however there was almost no communication with my lab instructor which is where majority of the grade comes from. Our lab section was not passing quizzes and no one noticed.
He's very enthusiastic about the course and assigns things that go with the course. Not very clear on grading scale. No textbook and makes all of his lectures relate to real world.
He doesn't grade anything himself. Everything comes down to your AI. His classes are unreal boring. If you in correctly site a paper he will site you for academic misconduct even if it's only a mistake. NO understand for students learning how to write psych papers.
AWESOME! Take as many classes as you can with this professor.
Ben is awesome! Ive had him for three classes now and he always makes them interesting. The whole department has been wonderful but he is definitely one of the best. The only reason I didn't get an A is because I never studied for anything
Somewhat arrogant at times. During lecture he would say the same thing 2-3 times just in a different way. Lectures were boring. Class seemed disorganized. Experiment guidelines and expectations were not explained clearly. Had us running around campus like Flo Jo to find experiment participants. Overall unpleasant experience. Glad it is over!
I would recommend taking as many classes as you can with him!! So enthusiastic about what he teaches and engages the class all the time.As long as you did the study guide you were good for the test. Weekly quizzes were online and open book. I was actually disappointed when he cancelled class. Such a nice guy!
Best professor I've had at IU. Loves his material, loves helping his students, and is generally an awesome dude. Take as many classes as possible from him.
Great class to have at 9am - his humor and enthusiasm really make lecture worthwhile. There really isn't much information he's presenting, but he makes the most of it and makes things very clear. Of course your experience in P211 depends mostly on your TA, but based on my experience in lecture I'd definitely take another class with Ben.
Very clear teaching style. He had a great way of applying experimental techniques to the real world.
Very engaging and energetic
He is a really charismatic guy and his lectures are pretty good. He's not very helpful outside of class though.
Ben has more interest in ensuring that his students find him amusing and interesting than teaching the material. His class management skills are poor and he routinely skips large parts of his lecture material due to his own inability to control the trajectory of the class, then makes no effort to make up for the lack. It's a shame - he tries hard.
Ben is very excited about what he is teaching and makes lectures relatable and interesting. He always has a positive attitude and I enjoyed going to his class. As long as you look over study guides and read the textbook chapters, the exams are very straightforward.
Ben is one of the best profs I have had, he makes confusing material very clear and never tries to "trick" you on exams or quizzes. Its also nice that he drops your lowest test and 2 lowest quizzes
Ben is extremely energetic and brings the best and most interesting information to each topic he presents. He may seem distant at first when approached outside of class, but if you go to him with a passion for a certain area of psychology he is happy to point you towards resources or mentors in that area. Overall an incredible person and professor!
Very nice guy, and very knowledgable. Lot of experience in the field. The fact he comes on here and reads these shows how much he cares about student feedback (though I hope he doesn't drastically change something because of one negative comment). Overall - excellent professor.
Ben is awesome and a very engaging lecturer for a Monday morning. I found the class to be boring and easy, and it doesn't really teach you how to actually start an experiment in the real world. However that aside, Ben is excellent.
I don't have much interest in psychology, but I have to admit that Ben made it interesting. He is an excellent lecturer and has a genuine love for psychology. Class and tests are fair but maybe too easy. One complaint: I cringe whenever I see him drink out of a beaker,
Engaging, energetic professor; however, his lectures turn stale halfway through the semester and he never really gave me useful help outside of class.
Excellent professor! Always kept things interesting and made everyone feel very comfortable to ask questions. He is a must-have sometime during your years at IU!
Such a good prof that I have taken him again, I also had him as a P115 student. He is very invested in teaching and getting feedback for a better experience for all of us. He even turned our first day of class into a quasi-experiment/evaluation of the ratings on this website. Such an engaging prof!!!!
One of my favorite teachers I have had in college. He is energetic and enthusiastic every day. Lectures are very engaging and he often uses fun examples to correlate the material.
Loved his lectures and energy! He made a boring class seem so interesting. He explained things so well and he is so adorable.
He's super cool and his class is pretty easy. It is difficult at first if you are not use to doing your own experiments and then writing scientific papers but it's easy to get use to and the TA's are super helpful.
One of my favorite classes so far. Ben is a great teacher.
If there is one professor at IU who you simply must have during your 4 years, it's Ben. Quite simply, Ben is one of the most energetic and interesting people I've ever met, and I mean that in life overall, not just for professors. While his class isn't easy, he's a great guy and always willing to talk. Very chill dude, very willing to help.
Ben is awesome! He makes all of his students feel very comfortable and makes the material as interesting as possible. The class was extremely fair. Attend lectures, read, and you should get an A. Tests do not really require much application. Also had him for HON-H 299 discussion, really enjoyed him there. Would definitely recommend him!
Very energetic and gives off a very positive vibe. The test are only 30 or 35% of your final grade but they are tough. The real points come from blog posts and comments on the iupigskin site, its easy to get a good grade if you just do that(which I forgot to do a few) and attended the class.
Great, fun teacher who cares about students. He's also created a very interesting honors section for his P155 class that I'd highly recommend. I've had him twice now and both have been fairly straight forward with easy exams and quizzes as long as you study his notes. Text book use not needed.
Made Psych really interesting as well as easy (but not TOO easy). Funny guy and really helpful. Plus, he broadcasts the lectures online (though beware of tech issues) but in class demonstrationsexperiments are worth going to class for. And there's so much extra credit! Really a great class and great even for non-science majors!
Makes lectures fun and interesting, and has tons of fun demonstrations. Tests are straightforward if you do the study guide. Downside is he tends to be slow to email back (usually about 4-5 days), if at all, which was pretty inconvenient when I needed help for a project. Also, doesn't lecture to everything on the test, so the book is a necessity.
Ben Motz is one of my all time favorite professors. He knows what he's talking about and makes it easy for non-majors to understand. Although his fantasy football class is more work than it may seem, it is not monotonous busywork. If you have the chance to take a class with Ben--do it.
Ben was literally the most amazing, charismatic professor I've had at IU. His lecturs are entertaining, and he'll really help you if you visit his office hours.
Took this class online and it was one of the best decisions I've made. Ben is a great guy and is very helpful if you go to office hours. Easy A.
If you do the lessons, you'll do awesome on the tests. Best class I have ever taken. He always reminds you of things and when they are due.
He's literally the worst professor I've ever had. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH HIM.
Had him for Psych 101 online, by far easiest class I've ever take. Just do the reading checks and study them before the test. He's really helpful and a quick responder to emails, good dude.
All of the assignments are creative, so they force you to think of psychology in a meaningful way.
He is the best professor I have had. Super easy going class, learned a lot but definitely a GPA boost even if you are not into psychology. You can paste notes into your book to use on quizzes. No tests or final.
This is one of the best online classes I have ever taken. There's a lot of mods and they have to be done in a timely manner, but the quizzes at the end of them are easy and you can retake them multiple times.
Lots of little assignments so staying on top of those is important, but otherwise a great professor. You can tell he cares about what he does
Took Motz online for psych 101 as an easy A... and it was extremely easy. Make sure you stay on top of your lessons and assignments and the class is a breeze. Quizzes are easy and you can look up the questions in the book online during the test, but the proctors are annoying. This class isn't a ton of work, you just have to make sure you do it.
I took an online class with Ben on accident instead of taking it in person. I was preparing for a deployment and needed to finish the class early and Ben was more than helpful. He met with me at my convenience and was accessible all the time. Great class, great guy.
Ben's online section of P101 was perhaps the easiest class i've taken so far. No midterm, no final, the unit quizzes are open book. He drops your lowest quiz grade. Just be sure to do all of the online modules on time, they don't take that long and you have unlimited attempts until you get a perfect score. Definitely take if you need to take P101.
Professor Motz did a great job of keeping the online class of P101 engaging. I struggled at the beginning just Motz helped me along and I was able to pass with flying colors. I really liked that he made time in his schedule to meet with me so I could stay on track.
If you have to take psychology TAKE IT ONLINE WITH BENJAMIN MOTZ! This class was the easiest class. There are 3 modules a week but all of the answers to those are online and there are also quizzes but no exams. The quizzes are open book!
Very nice person and a great professor. Would take him again! The first two tests are challenging, but he makes them easier as the semester goes on. Gave a lot of extra credit. Honestly, my favorite professor I've had all year
Loved Ben. If you need a psych class take this one. The exams reflect the study guides literally perfectly and if you do the homework it makes the exams easy. He doesn't waste time and actually cares about his students I would recommend him a million times please please take Ben.
Great professor who cares about his students. Do the study guides and you'll pass every exam. Review the assignments for the exams as well, as there are questions based on them too. Overall, amazing professor who will help you. Def take a class with him if you can.
Do your study guides and you'll do great! Fun and engaging class!
