Dr. Sawyer is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's very enthusiastic about history and teaches it very well. He's a cool guy and makes jokes to keep class interesting. It's always easy to learn from someone who is truly passionate about their subject and who truly loves being a professor. He'll help you out any way he can. Awesome class.

He is very passionate about History. He tries to make the class easy. However, his grades come down to major assignments, such as quizzes, exams, and your final paper. The paper must be in Chicago format. He will not explain the format, so you have to figure it out for yourself. He denies email help, so go to his office or let your grade suffer.

Dr. Sawyer is an AWESOME professor, i have him for surveys of world hist 1 and will be taking him for 2. he cracks jokes all the time, he only gives 2 tests and 1 paper and 4 pop quizzes, and if you do the readings the quizzes are easy the paper was the easiest I've written since being hear at MTSU and he gives you extra credit opportunity's

This professor is the best professor I've had in college so far. He cares very much for students and the subject he teaches. His coursework is not unrealistic it's very easy if you pay attention which trust me isn't hard, because he makes the class enjoyable.

This was was the best teacher i took this year, Dr sawyer is funny as hell and very understanding. i love this guy, he always and i mean always made my day, class is fun and if you listen to his lecture you will do absolutely fine. I wish he was my chemistry teacher because although chemistry is hard he will make is bearable.

He's funny, loud, and clearly loves his job. The class was easy but still provided plenty of opportunity to learn the subject, and without the need to purchase any textbooks. My only complaints would be that he didn't always answer emails and he sometimes got off topic long enough to mess up the class schedule.

If you take a history class, Benjamin Sawyer is the only professor to take. He is passionate about history, and is a stand-up comedian in his free time. This transfers over to his lectures, and he will make you fall in love with history through laughter. I hated history before Dr. Sawyer, but would willingly take his class not for credit. TAKE HIM.

Dr. Sawyer is a great professor. His lectures are easy to follow and "non-history-major friendly". About 40% of the class is dedicated to him telling jokes and straying off topic, but it's relevant to the course. He loves teaching & wants everyone to pass so he gives a lot of extra credit. Don't neglect the readings because they will affect you.

Dr. Sawyer is a truly amazing professor, but if you don't like history or aren't good at history, don't take his class. It's not an "easy A" class at all. His tests are pretty tough and you also have to write a paper. But he doesn't have a textbook so that's good. Again, take a different professor if you are looking for an easy class!

If there is one professor to take before leaving MTSU, Dr. Sawyer is the one! No book is required as he goes out of his way to give you reading materials. Tests are very straight forward and straight from review beforehand. He is absolutely hilarious and fun in lecture! I looked forward to attending each one! You won't be disappointed!

Sawyer is great, he's a funny guy that knows and loves his stuff. He is one of the few teachers who really cares; and that's super evident. The guy wears a lot of hats so it's hard to get his attention, but he has emailed me back. If you want to learn some interesting things that you didn't know, laugh and have a good time, take him.

Im horrible at history but Dr. Sawyer is hilarious. Hes a stand up comedian on the side so his lectures are always fun to listen to. Sometimes he goes off topic, but for me that made the class fun. His tests are tough & theres only the mid term & final but quizzes every week on readings.

Dr. Sawyer is literally the best. He's the reason I'm a history minor now. He makes class super fun and interesting. If you take notes and show up to class you will pass. 2 exams. Pop quizzes that don't happen often. Know the Constitution. And maybe some side assignment. No books. Lectures and side reading is all online. Even great in the mornings.

I honestly do not understand some of the comments. All you legit have to do is a quiz a week then two exams and a final paper. The articles are interesting but if you don't have time you can skim through and get a 100 on the quiz. I will say he is very strict, but hides it with his humor. Do not try to paraphrase in your essay just summarize.

Dr. Sawyer tries to be a comedian. His class is boring, but if you follow along with PowerPoint you will do fine. He hates for you to be late and do not have your cell phone or he will count you absent. He gives extra credit, but I didn't do it.

His classes are mandatory, but if there was ever a class forcing me to wake up in the morning I'm glad it's this one. He's a part-time stand-up comedic and it shows in his lecture and it's very very entertaining. Awesome teacher.

Dr. Sawyer is an excellent history professor. He focuses less on specific dates and events and more on overarching ideas and introduces a side of events you've never thought of before. He is engaging and will work with you outside of class if you show initiative. You have to study for the tests - I recommend attending SI. But great class.

Okay I had my doubts about Professor Sawyer but I am glad he changed my mind. Show up to class don't fall asleep or be on your phone. When studying for the tests reread the readings and go through powerpoints, take notes on what he says, not whats on the powerpoints, cause they're posted let your notes guide you through the powerpoints. Dr. Sawyer was one of my favorite professors this semester. I hate history but he made the class fun and entertaining. He's definitely a comedian. The class wasn't too hard; it wasn't easy either. If you put in time to study and do the readings, you can make an A easily. I highly recommend taking him!!

HIST2010 & 2020 were the best classes I've taken at MTSU. Dr. Sawyer makes every class enjoyable, I always leave class in a better state of mind. I took Dr Sawyer for HIST2010 & 2020. Overall, hes an amazing professor - he made me more interested in history those 2 semesters than I ever was my entire life. The only downside is you do have to read a lot of material (in place of buying a textbook though). Personally 2020 material was lacking and so broad and wasnt as much fun as 2010.

Dr Sawyer clearly loves his job. He walked into class every day excited to teach. He is easy to listen to and learn from, I loved his class. However he is difficult. I sat with the three smartest people in the room and we never got above a B on any test or paper. He's hard, but he cares, and you will learn from his class. Dont take if you dont care

The most inspirational professor at MTSU. If want to learn how to think about history instead of memorizing arbitrary dates and events, take Dr. Sawyer for gen ed history courses. There are no half sends, only full sends. Dr. Sawyer sends it every lecture.

If you hard time paying attention dont take this class, you cant get most the info from PP. Easy tests all based off readings and general understanding of historical events. Very funny so you wont be bored listening to lecture.

I took a Dr. Sawyer twice and love his classes both times. He kind of looks like Craig Cackowski. He's very funny. Learning history was important for me to write a historically accurate Twilight fanfiction. Overall great professor. Would recommend.

Dr Sawyer has an unique and effective way in teaching. The entire course is a story through time. Simultaneously he is able to incorporate motivational lessons and encourages engaging questions. If you don't like to laugh then you should probably not take his courses. He's a stand up comic and nothing is off limits for him. He's a rare one

Made US History a lot more fun to learn. Always told stories/jokes and gave us mini inspirational speeches. Overall a really caring and funny guy. Cared about what he was teaching and was almost always available. Held review sessions close to tests and helped us when needed. Had to read a lot but the quizzes about the readings helped my grade a lot

Amazing professor! I would take him again. He gave real life lessons behind everything, and I learned so much in this class. In the class itself, you will have a midterm, a quiz, and a final exam. On top of that, you have to do readings each week with a quiz. If you stay on top of everything, this class will be so rewarding for you.

You will also have quizzes base off those readings. There is a midterm and final but there are not hard as long as you study. He will also do review days for the tests and he is easily accessible.

I absolutely loved Dr. Sawyer and his class was always something I looked forward to. There are two exams, one paper, and weekly quizzes on materials he gives on the lectures for that week. Everything is straightforward if you go to class, but you can afford to miss a few. He's engaging and is super accessible outside class if you need him!

As someone who has struggled through history my entire life, this class was life-changing. The informative lectures mixed with humor kept me paying attention when I usually struggle. He does a lot of reading outside of class and was kind enough to give me his reading list so I could read what I found interesting. I would 100% take this class again.

I absolutely loved Dr.Sawyer as a professor and his class. I took him for both HIST2020 and 2010. He makes his lectures entertaining and easy to follow. The difficulty comes in for the finals (Essay) because his finals are time consuming and graded strictly. My advice is to start them as soon as he tells you about them and STUDY for tests!!

The most charismatic and hilarious instructor I've had throughout my academic career. Plenty of history teachers don't seem to understand that there job is to be a story teller. Sawyer however fully understands this, and embraces being the best story teller he can be while offering incredible insight and nuance into our nation's history.

Dr. Sawyer structures his classes very well. The majority of your grade comes from the exams and the rest is from a quiz on the constitution quiz and weekly quizzes over readings. If you do the work and show up for class you will be fine. You get 4 unexcused absences that do not effect your grade. Dr. Sawyer is also absolutely hilarious.

The GOAT professor. I took him before Covid and he is seriously the most entertaining professor I've ever had. Just an all around awesome guy and his lectures are interesting and entertaining. History is so much fun when he is teaching it! Great class!

You can tell he's passionate about his teaching, and he makes learning interesting most of the time. His class should be an easy pass. You'll also have to study for his midterm/final. Also don't recommend his early classes if you aren't a morning person, he can have a lot of energy at 10 am.

Second class I've taken with Dr. Sawyer and I cannot say enough good things about this guy. He is the most caring and accessible prof I've had to date and makes history so interesting. Show up to class, do your work, and stay focused during class and this is an easy A. Only reason I didn't get one was because I submitted my paper late. Take him!

This was my first class with Professor Sawyer and of US History as an international student. Professor Sawyer was an amazing teacher and is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches and skilled at teaching it. I have signed up for the next US History class with him this semester and am looking forward to it.

Ending up in his HIST 2010 class is the best thing that happened to me my first year of college. I enjoyed him so much I took him the following semester for HIST 2020 too. Dr. Sawyer is a professor who makes his class very fun and informational. Regarding the comments about his class being difficult- it is not. There is some reading- but if you're not able to do the minimum reading then you should not be a college student. The quizzes are also not hard, they are open note and just require the reading.

There are weekly readings and quizzes, and each test is cumulative. There are no study guides for the tests, but they are pretty easy if you have the main ideas down.

I really enjoy his lectures and he is really funny. I love his style of teaching, but I did find his exams to be pretty difficult along with the rest of my class. As long as you study a week in advance for the exams which is on all of the material that you've learned it should be a fun and easy class to take.

Sawyer is a good teacher. He makes jokes during the lectures and can get sidetracked very easily. We have weekly readings and quizzes and he'll drop the 2 lowest quiz grade. We had to read the constitution and bill of rights by ourself for the midterm which 50% of it is on. He does do 2 midterms tho.

Sawyer is great. He drops the two lowest quiz grades and gives extra credit. He also gives 2 mid term exams throughout the semester. He makes history very interesting.

If you have the opportunity to take him for any class do it. He doesn't like people on their phones and will call you out but it truly is easy to pay attention to his lecture. There are weekly quizzes but they are super easy and you only have a midterm, paper, and final outside of that. He also does really care for his students.
