Dr. Swets is a great professor. He is new and young so he keeps things as interesting as possible. Gives very clear study guides, so if you study them, the tests are easy A's. Make sure you attend class, or at least read the book and look at his power points on Blackboard. I would recommend taking PSY101 with Swets!

Because he is younger, Swets has a talent of using good examples we can relate with. His powerpoints are very clear and he will give the exact information we need. The tests are difficult, but his study guides are almost in order and crystal clear to what will be on the exam. He's new and he's doing a great job. Highly recommended.
The paper for this class is long, and the material isn't always that interesting, but Swets does a good job of making it bearable. He uses some pretty good examples, plus he's a super nice guy.
He was really nice and did a great job preparing the class for tests. They were pretty hard, but the study guide he gives helps a lot and is almost directly the test. Never uses the book, ever.
He's good, he's young so he uses examples that relate to us. However, he depends on the powerpoint too much and he can be unclear at times.
i thought he was cool, originally. he's young and clever, but i feel like he didn't grade fairly. I had a tutor, and when i handed in papers he would write vague comments and give me a C, while my classmates would get horrible comments, and they would get a B. NOT helpful in office hours, i skipped a class to spend 7 min hearing him repeat himself.
Prof. Swets is great!! Gives study guide prior to exams - if you know the concepts on the study guide the tests are easy. He uses lots of videos and real life examples. He is really funny too. Highly recommend this professor.
He is a fantastic teacher! Psy 300 should suck and he made it not suck so bad. He is a really goofy guy, crazy awkward, so just laugh in class and enjoy it!!
Prof. Swets is a decent human but not the best professor for this particular subject. He teaches verbatim from his power point and tries his hardest to be funny, which works some of the time. Not his fault that he cant make the subject interesting but just isn't one of the strongest profs for this subject. Plus he talks a lot about his grad works.
I think if you are so smart take this class, but if you are of average intelligence do not take him, He is so smart, and makes you feel not so smart.
I had prior classes in high school, so i seemed to be ahead of others. But he is still a good teacher, interesting, and funny in an awkward kind of way. Gives you the exam review sheets which helps a lot. Take him, nice guy, good prof.
The class is not an easy A, but Swets makes it decent. The tests were multiple choice. Just study the powerpoints. Attendance isn't mandatory. The paper seems overwhelming but he breaks it down and doesn't grade too tough on the final copy. Also, the final is cummulative but a lot of the ?'s were from past exams. I liked Swets and reccomend him.
This professor is someone who knows what he is talking about. He is very clear with what he is looking for on tests and you get points for daily in class assaignments (do not miss class.) He is an extremley difficult prof and there's no room for leniency -do no underestimate. If required to write papers revising with him AT LEAST twice is wise.
I was quite interested in Psych b4 this class. I was disappointed though, prof Swets is good, but he's tends to speak using the same tone, and it gets really boring! He also studies cognitive psych, and reminds us that he's not interested in human emotion at all (which was what draw me to psych initially, that and understanding human behavior)
Gives out very helpful review sheets before exams. Also, his exams are all multiple choice.. All the material is there, you just need to put effort into studying before exams. Good teacher.. a little boring though.
He does a great job teaching Cognition. He's very clear in explaining everything and is very hepful. Read all the chapter required and you'll do great in his class. He lacks tone in his voice when teaching however, but his powerpoints incorporate interesting videos and some sort of humorous picture/story. The class itself is also very interesting.
Very interesting class. I had taken a psych class in high school, so I had been over most of the topics before, but he made them a lot more interesting to me. He has a good sense of humor. Tests aren't terribly difficult, as long as you study the power points and go over the review sheets. He does give points for daily assignments, so go to class!
Really boring and dull. It was his first semester teaching this class. He never had the slides ready to print off until 10 minutes before class. He went very fast and there was never a discussion. It was only him lecturing. His tests were really hard. He must think we're graduate students or something.
Professor only uses his own powerpoint slides to teach. Doesnt encourage conversation. Discourages questions. Information isn't backed up with facts. Awful class.
He was GREAT! I hate psychology and he really opened my eyes to it. His notes are great because he gives you his power points and he is very reasonable. Make sure to go in and look at your exam to see all the questions you got wrong and highlight all the questions in your review that he asks. The final is simple if you do so.
Ben is VERY intelligent, but his teaching is not so great. He didn't seem to care about his students' success, and his exams were a bit difficult. He used contemporary examples to explain psychological theories and whatnot and I enjoyed that. He was ok. If you can take a better prof then do it, but if you're stuck with Benny Boy, its not all bad.
This was the hardest Psy class that I ever took. It seems nearly impossible to get an A no matter how hard you work and review on your project with him. He is very self absorbed, close minded, and in love with his own work, which no one understands. On our final exam our class average was a D. The good things: 1.gives reviews 2.participation points
Ben's a very intelligent man, but his teaching is a little lacking. Compared to my friends taking other psychology classes, he seems to go into the material alot deeper. So if your looking for a relatively in depth psych class, this is it. attendance isn't mandatory, but helpful. I would take someone else
I liked him as a teacher. He gives out study guides before each exam, which definetaly help. Pretty much ever question on the study guide was on the exam
He is funny, and likes to play the role of young professor. However, his skills would be best served in the field as opposed to teaching. I've been in love with the study of Psychology up until I took this course.
Professor Swets was awesome. He has funny lectures and all the notes are on the powerpoints. He gives study guides for the exams and they are exactly what is on the exam.If you go to class and take notes and study you will do great! TAKE HIM HE IS AWESOME! :)
Good instructor, provides a lot of material for review and notetaking including exam review sheets and powerpoints. Lectures are interesting, but he doesn't seem to talk much outside of class. Tests are pretty difficult and even the small in-class assignments are a bit tough to ace, but his expectations aren't unreasonable. Everything provided.
Take him. He is a great professor who actually teaches everything that is going to be tested. In class quizzes are open note. For the exams, he gives you review sheets that if you study them, there is no reason for you to do below an A-. Also, the book we used, Talk The Talk, was interesting and engaging and not at all a hard read.
I was not happy this with class or prof. the class was not too difficult but he tries to trick you on the tests. do the study guides!!! There are not a lot of points in this class so all of them count!! Also he doesnt take attendence but gives pop quizes that you can't make up.
He comes off as a funny and kind teacher but he lacks the ability to teach or lead a class. If you sit through his class you will realize how uninteresting and unintended for teaching he is.
Lectures are off the slides. He tries to make class fun but it isn't.Random quizes. He is not very helpful when asked for questions. Hard to ask question in class b/c of lecture hall. Hard to hear in the back. Read the book, do study guide, get with a group to study. Your on your own. Very nice guy but not very understanding.
This was one of the best professors I've had at GVSU. He makes it very clear what he expects on the exams with his study guides. This is a class that makes you learn! If you are looking to take something away from this class take it, if you want to do minimal work and get an A this isn't for you. Very helpful outside of class as well.
Great lab person, really nice.
Swets is a good prof. but I am a very active student always raising my hand to ask or answer questions. EVERYTIME i had something to comment on or ask he made me feel like an idiot! It was outrageous. It's a 101 level class for a reason. Ive never taken pysch before so im going to have questions. What a jerk!
Not bad, but not phenomenal either. Lectures are generally pretty interesting and helpful, but in my opinion, he doesn't provide a well-balanced introduction to psych. (i.e. he spends a LOT of time on cognitive psychology, his area of expertise, but that takes away from other areas...). He also has terrible tunnel vision...
great guy! cute, funny, loves what he teachs. tough subject, but putting in effort pays off. overall i would recommend!
If you know everything on the study guide, you know everything on the test. I'm no genius, and I got an A in his class. Each question on the study guide corresponds to one test question. Do the study guide! And show up to class, he gives random in-class assignments/quizzes worth 5 points... adds up to 50 basically free-bee points!
His lectures are incredibly dull. Be careful to use the review sheet, and you should be pretty much set.
#1. you DO NOT need the textbook for this class. but ya his lectures are a little dull, but it's down to the point, he gives you study guides that are exactly what the exam is going to be like. i'd take this prof in any class he teaches, because i've had him in a few, and they are all pretty simple
I actually found his lectures really interesting and thought he was engaging. Material is taught well, not difficult to get an A at all if you do the study guides and know all of the material in them.
Swets a pretty cool guy, and his PSY 101 class is very easy. he is laid back, his lectures are interesting and informative. He occasionally gives small in-class assignments in place of taking attendance, but if you pay attention at all in the class and study off of the review sheets he gives you for the tests, you will ace the class with ease.
Swets is a really caring professor. He is one of those guys who honestly wants you to succeed and will do whatever it takes to help you. Very good with emails and clarity of what is expected. Easiest research paper that I've heard of in comparison to other profs. TAKE HIM!
Research Methods is a boring, difficult class. He has high expectations of the paper, the exams are tough, and the final is cumulative. I recommend taking a different prof.
His lectures were always interesting, so if you take him there is no way you'll be bored in class. He actually teaches very well and gives you study guides that are basically the exam. You will learn a ton!
I simply love this professor he is so good.
I felt like we learned more about linguistics than about psychology in this class. I was really excited for the class, but found that it was not what I expected. His exams are easy as long as you fill out the review sheet.
Swets is so organized and explains things really well. He gives in class assignments instead of attendance that really boost your grade if you go. Exams can be tricky, but he gives a review sheet. Highly recommended!
His class was taught directly from the powerpoints so don't bother buying the book. Class wasn't mandatory, however he did give out random 5 point assignments here and there to help boost your grade. He gives reviews for each test, DUE THEM! The review is exactly like the test except not all the review questions are on it.
I loved Professor Swets! All the exams came directly from the review guide, which came directly from the lecture notes. I recommend printing out the powerpoints for class, just to follow along. I didn't use my book once so don't bother buying it. I emailed him multiple times and got very helpful answers back from him right away! His good looks help
Professor Swets is a great professor. He does notes directly from a power point so I would recommend printing them off each week. He gives study guides for each exam and do them, the questions come right off the study guide. In addition, attend class, he gives out random assignments you can't make up if you miss. Gave us NO extra credit.
Awesome guy! He is super easy. His lectures can be kind of dull, but if you pay attention and do the study guides the tests are very easy and I found the material quite interesting. He is younger and gives great and fresh examples.
he gives you study guides that are VERY CLOSE to the exam, which is helpful. NEVER used the book, don't buy it. pretty nice but not helpful if you have questions during tests. but overall easiest psy101 prof!
My favorite professor so far! He gives study guides for the test a week before exam. He leave time in the class before an exam to answer any questions you have over the study guide. Questions on exams come strait from the study guides. Goes over info in class very well. Knows what he is talking about. Best prof to take for psy 101!
Personally, I found him to be a fantastic professor. He gives you every opportunity to succeed, but you are expected to take the initiative. I never really used the book, but I did attend every class which helped A LOT! He will help you if you ask even though he's not extremely talkative, but he is very kind. I would take hime again for sure!
Such a good prof! If you take the class for more than and hour it could get a little boring, but he puts all his lecture slides online so if you zone out you can just look them up later. The tests are so easy because the review sheets are so helpful and he's and overall great guy. I would highly recommend him!
I wouldn't suggest taking this class for a 3 hour - very hard to stay focused. But he did give breaks every hour & let us out early. He's very understanding & works well with the athletes. He always had the exam study guide put up well before the exam & had a review session the class period before - very helpful. I def recommend him!
Professor Swets is a great prof. He is very knowledgeable and his tests are very doable and come with a study guide. Great teacher. Used the book once. Don't buy it. If you go to class, pay attention, take notes, and do the review materials its impossible to fail. Highly recommend.
Loved this class. All the questions on exams were word for word the review sheets. Review sheets came directly from lectures, which he posts on blackboard. Very easy to get an A. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he does give in class assignments. He is a very funny guy, and easy to listen to!
Loved Dr. Swets. Review sheets are extremely helpful and he always holds a review session for the exam. His power points are really helpful but if you read the chapters it REALLY supplements it. Funny, super nice guy... also great to look at :) Easy A if you take notes and do the review sheets (which come STRAIGHT from lecture.)
As long as you really study the review sheets, you'll be fine. He gives random 5 point assignments in class. DO NOT buy the book because he doesn't use it all. Really boring lectures but pretty easy exams if you study the review sheets he gives you.
Professor Swets was an awesome professor! His test come straight from the review. Do not buy the book, you will never use it. He gives great examples and makes you interested in his lectures. This class is super easy to get a good grade. He also is adorable and looks like a Disney prince. I highly recommended him!
Prof. Swets is a great professor! You need to attend class in order to excel, but everything else is up to you with how well you want to succeed in his class. Take him to learn a lot about Introductory Psych!
Professor Swets was a much better professor than the other psych teachers. My friends were complaining about how tough the class was with other profs. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! All the information you need to know is covered in lecture.
I did like his class but it can be hard. He was very approachable but not very helpful. No extra credit and exam were very hard and written terribly.
Professor Swets is great! He is very clear and provides lecture slides for every class. Overall, the class is very interesting and easy. If you pay attention in class and study the answers on the exam study guides, you will be golden.
Professor Swets was so great! As long as you show up and pay attention in class and study the material before exams you will be fine! He covers the material well, shows a lot of videos that help connect concepts to real life, is interesting to listen to, funny, and definitely not hard to look at haha;) I would recommend anyone to take him!
He gives you study guides for every exam and the questions on the exam are straight from the study guide. Do the study guides and get an A in the class. Attendance is not mandatory, but he gives random in class assignments that add up if you miss them. The class is interesting and he has a good personality which makes it more fun.
His humor is very sarcastic and dry, but to me it was hilarious. He is gorgeous! Also, he gives a review sheet before every exam which includes all the ideas so as long as you study those, you will do great.
Expected psych to be my hardest class, but he's a great prof. Gives study guides for every tests and tells us exactly what we need to know, a lot of the examples he gives in lectures are on the test. If you study you will get an AB on every quiz. Some in class assignments at random but they're easy.
Professor Swets is great! He posts all lecture slides and gives review sheets for all exams. The exams are easy if you do the review. Do the work, show up, and get an easy A.
Prof. Swets is very interesting to listen to. If you try in the class you will pass. He does give pop-assignments but they are only worth 5 points so if you miss its not a big deal. How he words things on the exams is a little challenging but other than that hes a great professor, really wants to help you pass. I would suggest taking him for sure!
Swets was awesome. Super easy exams, but he did have in class work that if you missed would definitely bring your grade down. Study guides were given out for every exam. Easy class
Beauty and brains..... you can't get much better than that.
Swets is a good professor. You can tell he's really interested in what he's teaching, and he's willing to hear other opinions and have discussions with his students. His exams can sometimes be a little hard, but I did better when I came to class on review day with the review sheet filled out and with questions I needed clarification on.
Swets is the package deal. His lectures can sometimes be boring but going to class is worth it due to his good looks and awkward jokes. His tests are easy if you know the study guide and there is minimal in class work and never any homework. 10/10 would reccomend Swets to anyone.
He was a great prof, and he's super good looking. Overall I really enjoyed the class. Tests are kinda tricky, but if you pay attention, and do the readings you should be fine.
Swets was an amazing teacher, he shows a lot of videos and helps you relate it to psychology. The tests were extremely easy to get an A on, if you just did the review. The final is a little harder but overall an easy A. However don't expect him to round your grade up from an 89.8 to a 90, he never will. Only 2 tests an a final, highly recommend!!
Professor Swets was an excellent professor. If you have to take Psych I HIGHLY recommend taking it with him. Very easy to learn from and the study guides are the exact test pretty much! Does have a few pop assignments in class so make sure to be there as much as you can.
Prof. Swets was great. He teaches well and uses examples in class that he brings up on tests (so you should attend class). Tests were pretty easy and he gives you everything that you need to do well in the class.
Second time taking psych and by far way better than my other professor. Swets gives review sheets that can be answered right from his powerpoints and lectures. Review sheets are just like exams and he has a review session the class before the exam and gives free answers to questions asked! Recommend having review sheet filled out before review!
Swets is good looking but it doesn't make up for the fact that he's pretty boring. The class is long and he basically reads off the slides so print them out before class and you're good to go. It's okay to skip class a few times but don't make a habit of it because there are some little assignments and quizzes we do in class.
For not liking Psychology very much, Professor Swets made the class very interesting and enjoyable. He always uses good examples and videos in class which helps when learning about otherwise boring information. Don't buy the textbook, you won't ever open it. Just show up for class and you will do just fine!
Amazing lectures that are relatable and fun to listen to.
he's awesome
Probably on of my favorite professors I've ever had. He's very lecture heavy but his lectures are very interesting and to the point. Does pop quizzes so read the chapter before every class. He's pretty monotone and has a witty sense of humor but he's very nice and to the point. Surprised by how easy he made the infamous psych 101 class
Slightly boring lectures, but he does his best to make things interesting. I never went to see him in office hours, but he does seem like a nice guy. Exams are easy enough if you study! Definitely don't need the book, all exams are out of his powerpoints
I am not big on Psych but Prof. Swets made the class interesting. Pay close attention to his reviews that are posted. The tests are almost exactly the same.
After reading this professors reviews, I was very excited to take his class, they are accurate in that he makes lectures interesting, but he is honestly one of the most condescending professors I have ever had. Maybe its because he usually deals freshman but he is rude and its pretty obvious he doesn't care about his students.
For not being a psychology person, this class was surprisingly interesting! He is very good looking which definitely helps! I enjoyed watching videos of examples of real life psychology issues. I would take again.
If you want a fairly easy psychology class take Professor Swets. His lectures are very boring but everything he talks about is what is on the exams, there are no surprises, and he gives you review sheets. Attendance is not mandatory but he does do in class assignments and pop quizzes(you are allowed to miss one). But don't buy the book, won't use.
Ben was a good professor. Some lectures were great and others could be better. Many opportunities for extra credit are available. The class is out of very few points, however. So study hard and prepare for each exam as the final is cumulative like most of your finals will be. The textbook was used for optional reading and can be found on Amazon.
Prof. Swets is a good psych teacher! He is lecture heavy but makes them pretty interesting. His study guides are very similar to the exams! Some days he does random participation activities and there are a total of 5 pop quizzes (I think). I enjoy him as a psych teacher and would recommend!
He was a very good professor. Very clear with what we needed to know for the tests. He gives review sheets that are all on the exams. Pop quizzes are common, so do the reading and look over the powerpoints.
Dr. Swets is really solid professor who is enthusiastic about Psychology. His lectures are thorough and so are his study guides for exams. Attendance is recommended since he plays videos that are relevant to the exams and has pop quizzes. I would advise not purchasing the textbook because you won't use it. Would take again.
I really enjoyed professor Swets, he uses really solid examples to apply the terms to. Pretty much every example he uses will be on the exam. The exams are kinda rough, but study hard and you will do well. There is only three exams so make sure you do well or it will be hard to recover.
Professor Swets is an amazing Professor. I had him for PSY101 and took PSY357 just to have him as a professor again. He is well orginized and lectures very clearly. There are NO surprises on the exams and he voices what he expects very well. I would recommend him to anyone! He cares about his students and their success in his class!
He did a good job of explaining concepts. The material wasn't exactly what I expected, and it was more like an English class in how it focused on the actual structure of sentences. So, if this is something you are not interested in, it can be very boring. Multiple choice exams are straight forward. I felt some topics were not given enough examples
He's fantastic. His lectures are far and away the best I've ever had in any of my classes. They made me want to come to class every week, and they really help you engage with the material. He's very charismatic and funny, and he really knows what he's talking about. I had a great time taking his class. The book is definitely optional, by the way.
Great prof, respectable, funny, available to answer questions inside and outside of class. Book is necessary, have online assignments over it. Mostly graded by online assignments and exams but he posts study guides that are useful. Easy class as long as you put in some effort.
His lectures can get very boring, but he includes videos and group assignments during class that make it more interesting. Make sure to do the reading and go to extra lab studies for the extra credit.
Nearly every class consists of a lecture. Lectures are well organized and easy to follow. He did not take attendance but there were additional items that are mentioned in lecture that he does not post on blackboard in the powerpoint slides. Overall a good class and easy to follow what is required of you.
This class was more like an english class. Not interesting at all, and the content is difficult to understand. This class was very challenging, and confusing. This is the hardest class I have taken at GV. I do not recommend this course, but I recommend this professor, just for another class.
I found this class to be very interesting. You can tell he's passionate about the subject. The assignments are more like busy work, but his lectures were great. They are mainly what to rely on for tests. However, attendance is key because some things he makes questions about, he only discusses in class.
Not what you think it is, it's like an advanced english class. You learn about syntax, etc, but more in depth. Lecture heavy, and very hard material. Test are almost impossible to get a A/ high B. Prof means well, but the class itself is not interesting.
I really enjoyed Professor Swets' class. He makes everything very clear and teaches the material very well. He puts the lectures online, so that is nice. He is very easy to talk to and will work with you to view your exams if you can't make it to the designated viewing times.
Professor Swets is an amazing professor who is truly intrigued with linguistics. Due to the professor and his level of expertise, I enjoyed the class. However, this class is difficult and you will not get a good grade without attending class and using the study guide to study for exams. Due to the grade being based off of 3 exams the class was hard
Swets is the definition of a solid professor. He will not be the best prof you will ever have, but he is consistently a good professor and you know what you're getting from him. He is a funny guy who cares about what he teaches. He is extremely lecture heavy, but tests are very similar to lectures. Tests aren't easy, so study well in advance.
He is a great professor. His classes are lecture heavy so make sure you attend class to get an understanding of what is happening in general. He provides study guides for every test which are kind of long, but are basically the same thing as the tests, so make sure you do them and you'll get a good grade! would for sure take his class again.
Very lecture heavy. Skipping class often is not a good idea while he does give random in class assignments. If you skip you might not know upcoming dates, homework, etc. Very intelligent, just insanely boring classes. Honestly I struggled with the exams quite a bit.
Swets is awesome! He has interactive and interesting lectures. Take good notes from TB, attend all lectures and take notes, and this class will be a breeze! He gives a very helpful and clear study guide. Exams are very straightforward. Swets gives fun and clear examples in lecture. He also is very handsome, so that helps to stay engaged as well!
I had prof Swets for my PSY 101 class and he made everything so much easier. He does such a great job of making psychology interesting and is very knowledgeable about what he is teaching. The only downside is that the class is very lecture heavy, however they are not difficult notes to remember. Overall a great teacher and I highly recommend!
Professor Swets is an awesome person who really enjoys psychology. His class is very lecture heavy, so I recommend going to class and doing the learnsmart activities. He gives study guides for exams, and those correspond well with the exams. Highly recommend taking him for 101!!
prof swets is a really good professor! he def wants his students to succeed. his lectures are quite heavy, however, he provides study guides for exams that are very helpful and almost exactly like what would be on the exam which I really liked. he is also just a nice person and can be funny at times!
I dont believe he had any bad intentions, though his class was the most boring i have taken in my college career so far. My class mood everyday was reflected by his attitude towards the course (which was robotic like). Take this class if you like heavy lectures. Remember your gonna have to buy an online textbook/ website that u use instead of BB.
Prof Swets... what a man. This was the most engaging lecture I've had. Psych is already an interesting subject, but he makes it really easy. He is very knowledgable in his field and really wants his students to succeed. Don't listen to the bad reviews they're just salty or didn't try hard enough. I would marry this man in a HEART BEAT.
This was a great class and Prof Swets was a great teacher. Be ready to read quite a bit and take notes. There are some pop quizzes during class but they aren't too hard if you listen. Make sure to stick to the exam reviews because they are literally the exams. Just be sure to pay attention and get your work done and you will get a good grade.
Professor Swets was really awesome for my first semester in college. It is very lecture heavy so get ready to read and take lots of notes. Other than the amount of reading, there's not much other homework. Sometimes there are pop quizzes in class so make sure you are doing the work and learning the material. Overall I loved this class!!
Professor Swets has been my favorite professor so far! His lectures are great, very interesting, he keeps you engaged and really helps you understand everything. He is also really funny! As long as you do the homework (which is not too much) and go to/watch the lectures the exams are no problem! Hes always available for help outside of class too!
Overall was not a bad class, he just has a lot of assignments and its confusing to know what and when it is due. The exams are the most important, there is a lot of content but he does give us a study guide. You have to try hard and study a lot but you will pass if you try your best!
I will admit I put a lot of work into this class, but I do not think that it was hard. Gives very clear study guides for exams and cares about students so much. I would definitely take him again if I could and recommend him to a friend, awesome guy! One of the best professors out there.
I loved taking his class and he made it very easy to understand the material with power-points and videos. He is very easy going and he's very understanding if you are having issues and need extra help. Overall the class is pretty easy but it's important you study for the exams. He makes it very easy by giving you study guides which help a lot.
Benjamin Swets is one of the best professors I have had at GV, and I am not even a psych major. The material is interesting but stimulating, and he is light-hearted in his lectures. The subject itself can be difficult but he really breaks it down. I would definitely recommend him!
Swets is great. The class material can get a bit complex but it is really easy to meet with him outside of class. He's very easy going and you can tell he loves what he teaches. You will need to put in a good amount of effort but he really provides a solid class experience. I didn't even use my textbook. Overall I would highly recommend him.
A caring and thorough professor! Study guides and lectures lined up with the exams, directions were clear, communication was frequent, and his grading policy was more than fair. Do not panic when he mentions PSY 357 being a "difficult course", getting a good grade is very attainable if you watch/attend all of the lectures. I really learned a lot!
Launchpad assignments due every Monday and Wednesday which are pretty easy. Theres 3 exams, as long as you do the review sheet and study it you should be good for the tests. His lectures were kind of boring but easy to understand. Attendance is not mandatory but he sometimes has in class assignments or quizzes which are graded but super easy
Swets is a good professor. I had to put in a lot of effort in order to get A. I would advise to always be taking notes during lectures. Make sure you prepare for the exams by doing the exam review sheets!
Swets' lectures were very boring and were very repetitive. This class has three exams and there is a lot of material to study. I had to put a lot of effort into this class to receive the grade that I had got. There is a lot of reading assignments but very doable.
I liked Professor Swets, his lectures are quite long but I actually enjoyed them. He also was willing to talk afterwards and had interesting things to say. There are only 3 exams but that also means you kinda hang in the balance. He does have random quizzes and in class assignments, but overall pretty good.
Professor Swets is an easy teacher but lecture is boring. 3 exams which come straight from his review sheets. If you're looking for an easy and nice teacher, take him!!
Definitely take this class if you have to take Psychology as a gen Ed!! He has 3 exams, including the final that is not cumulative. He provides a entire review sheet prior the exam and all the exam questions come from that sheet so you know exactly what questions are on it. His lectures are humorous and very interesting.
Prof Swets was very good and always posts his lecture slides before each lecture (which is super helpful). We had online quizzes once a week & 3 exams, one being the final. This is a semi-difficult class but his study guides and quizzes help prepare you. Also, in-class activities that also go towards your grade. I would take him again!
I loved Prof Swets! He is a sweet guy and makes lectures fun (sometimes can get boring though). Make sure you do ALL of the work and take lots of notes during lecture. He updates the exam review sheets every chapter that we learn something new, and is overall a fantastic teacher. Just make sure you do not procrastinate studying for the exams!!!
Professor Swets was one of the best professors I've taken here. His lectures were clear, in-depth, engaging, and structured really well. His assignments were straightforward and there wasn't very much work/reading at all. The material was challenging, but everything assigned was purposeful. I did not purchase the textbook and didn't really need to.
Professor Swets was a great professor. I found the class to be super interesting and he's a great guy with a good sense of humor. There is a lot of reading involved but the reading helps a ton to understand lectures better and can be tested on during exams. There are three exams that aren't too difficult. Take him if you get a chance!
If you have the chance to get him as a professor do it!!!! His lectures were very engaging and he explained the material very well. He drops 4 assignments at the end of the semester.
Great professors, take him if you have the chance! Lectures were engaging and purposeful! There 4 exams, which all had study guides with exactly what was on the exams. He really cares if his students learn and will always offer extra help if needed!
I wouldn't say this is the worst professor I have ever had but he was very difficult! I think the material was just really hard, but I met with him so many times that you'd think Id get a better grade but the material was just tough. Graded by 4 exams, a few online quizzes and discussion posts.
This class was hard but interesting. His lectures are really good and you can tell he actually knows what he is talking about so he brings something interesting to the class. There was one random pop quiz and a few in class assignments. Attendance is not mandatory but you will miss a lot of points from assignments if you aren't there.
For him being a psych proff he doesn't give a toot (to put it lightly) about mental health, this was the first time in my life I struggled with mental health and had to beg and plead to turn in assignments I missed to do missing classes. He did come around eventually but was stubborn at first.
There are four tests in class, easy homework assignments, and random in-class activities. He gives study guides before each test and holds a review session so you can ask questions, so if you take time to review you will do very well. All slideshows are posted online too! I am hoping to have him again for another psychology class next year!
Overall a nice professor, not much work outside of the actual class which is just him going over PowerPoint notes. I had him for a hybrid course and the only work I did at home was one 20-minute lecture video with 5 questions afterward every week. The test review sheets are also a lifesaver, I only filled them out the day before an exam and got As!
Not going to class is a gamble b/c there are surprise little activities for points. Study guides he gives are basically a cheat sheet if you memorize all the answers Seems like a good guy, lectures not super boring
Class isn't bad if you memorize the study guide he gives you. Can miss class without fear of repercussions a few times, but he only drops two assignments, so if you miss a lot of in-class assignments it can add up. I bought the book, and didn't open it once. He is really helpful and makes a lot of content very achievable!
Swets is a great lecturer. I had a LOT of absenses this year due to some health issues so I did poorly on the exams but all of the hybrid work was very straightforward and not at all time consuming. The concepts are hard and he admits that so grading tends to be quite lenient.
VERY lecture heavy. THE TEST IS THE STUDY GUIDE. He likes to surprise you with mini assignments due at the end of class (they are 5 points) so attendance is pretty important. Very easy going and funny teacher.
Swets is an overall great professor. He made the course very simple and easy. Every class is a lecture though so be prepared to fight some sleep, especially if you are taking it in the morning. Although attendance isn't mandatory, once a week he'll have a little 5 point assignment at the end of class. DON'T FORGET ABOUT SONA, do it early
He was a good proff! The content of Psychology of Language was just miserable though. He did his best to make it digestible so for that I appreciate and respect him. Good proff, class was not for me.
The lectures were engaging and very understandable and he even gives study advice after exams!
The structure of this class is sensible. Attendance is not mandatory in the syllabus but definitely necessary to learn the material. Prof Swets does a great job lecturing. Supplemental worksheets (very few) never feel like busywork. The work load was definitely manageable, and the tests could be tough but if you do your work/listen, you'll be fine.
This professor is good and really knows what he's talking about. The only problem was that if you missed class and we had an in-class assignment, you wouldn't get credit for it, even if you wanted to turn it in late to get half, you couldn't either. Attendance is also not mandatory, but if you don't go to the lectures, then you'll fall behind.
genuinely the hardest class ever. he is a really nice guy just exams were really hard. I wouldn't take him again
He's tough, yes, but he gives great study guides for all the exams and plenty of extra study material for anyone struggling. You have to read the stuff he assigns and you have to take careful notes and study frequently. Psych of Language is just a tough class, but Prof Swets is one of the very best. As good as Prof Tiernan in the BMS program.
If its hard for you to focus in class id rethink taking this course. However, if you can keep focus this class its pretty easy. Being half online to was pretty helpful.
Don't take this class willingly. It is not the kind of language and psychology you think it is. It is very reading and lecture heavy and you have to pay attention and actively take notes to do well. He's also not the kindest person and doesn't answer questions very well.
The class itself is a hard subject but come to class and pay attention and you'll be fine. He is a good and kind professor who enjoys answering questions and doesn't make you feel stupid. Hybrid class was great. YOU MUST STUDY. If you study properly, an A is very accessible.
He was funny at times, but overall, wouldn't take him again.
The subject itself can be difficult and his teaching methods can be questionable..The exams were challenging but his study guides were very helpful. You just have to have a good studying method and to make sure your actually retaining the information because his wording can be... I only recommend him if you can do that, other than that don't do it
