This professor only reads off of slides, moves quickly when students don't understand things. He barely knows how to explain the content without saying "uhhh" and does not seem to care for the students. There is no curve. Attendance mandatory for pointless iclicker questions. Tests and labs are hard. Use to love chemistry, now i hate it.
I won't sugarcoat this class, it's hard. However, it would have been undoubtedly worse without its professor. Dr. Turnpenny is straight, to the point, and is probably the sole reason I'm not failing chemistry. While he does demand attendance through constant I-Clicker questions, he's friendly, approachable, and often breaks the tension with a joke.
Turnpenny sometimes goes through lecture pretty quickly so I found it useful to copy down the lecture notes into my notebook before every class. He mostly reads off the slides and sometimes has a tough time explaining certain questions, however he's not a bad professor. But you HAVE to put a LOT of effort in to get a good grade in this class.
Turnpenny is a really nice guy if you get to know him a little better. You need to go to his office hours because he has more time to explain things more in depth. In lectures he tends to read off the power points a little fast because he needs to cover the all the materials. He tries to make jokes during lectures to keep everyone interested.
you're in better hands with turnpenny and lees than the others. The above comments say poor things that are out of the lecturer's control. The clickers are department requirement, which means you have to go to lectures, which I found helpful(i didnt buy the textbook) If you dont get the material there is office hours. Lab is out of his hands also..
Pay attention, be present in class, really focus on learning the material and you will be fine. The textbook isnt that helpful, but there is an access code that comes with thE book for a study website THAT IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL. USE SMARTWORK AND DO THE PRACTICE QUESTIONS THEY ARE IDENTICAL TO HOW THE QUIZZES AND TESTS ARE.
He was my lector professor, I think he would have been a much better professor if he had a smaller class, he was teaching about 250 students. I don't believe he is the type of teacher to be teaching a lecture course. but he does try and make the class interesting for the students.
Go to his office hours especially at the beginning of the year before everyone else goes. It helps a lot if you get to sit down with him in a small group. You can also find out a lot about the quizzes and tests through office hours. He's the one that makes the tests and quizzes.
This class is very hard but Turnpenny is good. Lot of work needed to do well.
Chem 107108 are very hard courses, get ready to put in a LOT of work. Professor Turnpenny makes the class so much better because he actually engages with his class and makes jokes to lighten the mood. He is extremely nice, very approachable and cares a lot about his students grades. Go to his office hours they help a lot. Overall great professor!
Chem 107 and 108 are extremely hard courses. Your grade is based off of how well you can teach yourself the material. Turnpenny is a good professor, considering he is teaching over kids in each lecture. No matter how good he is though, the class is still unfairly difficult. But if you are picking a chem professor. Go! With! Turnpenny!
Turnpenny is the man! Intro to chem classes suck, and are extremely hard- especially 108. But, if it was so much better to go through with Turnpenny as my professor. He really wants everyone to succeed even though it seems impossible sometimes. If you can take chem 107108 with him do it
Great professor, great guy, best sweaters/cardigans
Dr. Turnpenny is by far the best science teacher I've had. I was never good at chemistry, but he has made every topic so much easier for me to understand - and if you don't understand he holds extensive office hours and goes through each topic thoroughly and completely. The class itself is extremely hard, and requires a lot of work.
great professor, cares for students, funny
Great man, always willing to explain further if you don't understand something, cracks a few funny jokes here and there, and honestly wants everyone to do good in his class.
GREAT professor. Hated chemistry before and in the beginning of the semester but Prof Turnpenny really made the class more enjoyable and made hour-long lectures fly by. Really funny too and is definitely available if you seek out his help at office hours. Hoping to have him next semester as well!
work hard and you'll be fine
Chemistry has always been one of my worst subjects. I had to repeat 107 before taking this class. This class is a horror, but let me tell you, Turnpenny knows what he's doing and he's your best bet for a good grade. Go to office hours, Go to the help room , and get a tutor if you want anything above a C-. Go to lecture, he explains things well.
Turnpenny is an amazing professor. Despite chem 107 being an extremely difficult course, he makes the course as enjoyable as possible for all the students enrolled and truly cares about his students' success. The class is A LOT of work and is very difficult at times, but Turnpenny is always there for you if you need help.
Turnpenny rocks. I don't know anyone who doesn't like him. He isn't super specific when answering questions in class, but its easy to tell that he wants everyone to do well.
Great professor, made my experience with Chem 107 bearable. He is especially helpful and available considering the amount of students he has. Also very funny and makes lectures engaging. Would definitely recommend him to future students.
Turnpenny is a great lecturer. He is clear in class and answers any questions in class or in office hours. Chem 107 will still be an awful course regardless of who you have. The Chem department wants to weed out as many pre med kids as possible. No bonus and no curve. Take this class elsewhere if possible. But having a good teacher helps alot.
Work hard, ask for help if you need it
Chem 107 is a difficult class, but Turnpenny is great at making the information easier to understand. Attendance is critical. He tells you the grading criteria at the beginning of the course and it does not budge at all. Make sure you go to office hours or tutoring before you get completely confused because chem constantly builds.
Turnpenny is a great guy and an equally great professor. His tests are challenging, and the group part of the quizzes specifically are something to beware of, but he has a thorough knowledge of the subject and makes it interesting.
Amazing Lecturer always there to help. HOWEVER, exams ARE VERY difficult. The exam questions are not straight forward and require intermediate to advanced analysis. Group quizzes are also hard so make sure you come prepared every time. DO NOT RELY ON YOUR GROUP. Make sure to get high grades on labs too for grade boosters.
Chem was a genuinely hard class for me. Luckily there's a lot of quizzes and labs that help boost your grade. The material was hard but Turnpenny knew when we weren't understanding or following along and ramped up his teaching. Tests are very difficult, study as much as you can, and do practice problems. Test averages were around 70% in my class.
Dr. Turnpenny sometimes gets a bad rep. He teaches one of the hardest introduced classes offered at Bing, so not so many people do well, but that isn't his fault. He hold office hours 2-3 times a week, on top of doing online/in person tutoring sessions where he demonstrates how to answer any question. just go to lectur, read the book and practice.
WARNING: this class will shatter your dreams if you do not try hard enough. The labs are graded very strictly and could kill your grade. Tests are pretty tough. The class is insanely hard but he's still an amazing professor. His dad jokes are ON POINT
VERY CHALLENGING, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WEREN'T GIVEN THE CHANCE TO TAKE AP CHEM. I struggled in this class. I realized that my grades weren't even as bad, it was just the LAB. The grading is extremely tedious and it can make a difference between a C and a B. If you are pre-med don't give up. Make sure you find a good tutor and STUDY.
These classes were the two hardest classes I have ever taken. These are weed-out classes so if you don't absolutely need these classes, don't take them. They made my life extremely hard and brought my overall quality of life down. They will definitely bring your GPA down and keep you up at night crying for countless hours. Seriously, Good luck.
He is an awesome lecturer and there for his student with many office hours a week. However, the class is very difficult and absolutely no curve. Attendance is part of your grade. Need to buy a textbook for group quizzes. But you will learn alot from this class and studying for it, never took chemistry before and now I am a master of it.
I love this man but he will make your life difficult. The class is hard, but Turnpenny and the chem department are very organized and there are plenty of opportunities for extra help. Tests and quizzes are rough, and the labs are extremely strict. Work hard, go to office hours and you can do well.
Just take the time to read the textbook and understand concepts. I cannot stress this enough, but take the time to do the CLT Office hours questions and in-chapter questions in the textbook. Learn how to do those well and you should have a good shot of doing well in the class. Turnpenny's actually a nice guy; just make sure to put in your own work.
If you take intro chem at bing, do yourself a favor and take it with Turnpenny. I was terrified of chemistry coming into college, but Turnpenny does such a great job of explaining the concepts and walking through the problems. Show up to class and actively pay attention and you should be fine. Use tests from previous years to study!
Prof. Turnpenny started class 1 by saying "I am not Mr., I and DR. Turnpenny". That should give you a taste of his personality and ego. He gives no curve or help he will NOT round you up from a 89.9 to a 90, literally. He laughed at all of the pre-med students the first day. The chem department at Bing is underwhelming overall and he adds to that.
This professor is just a terrible addition to Binghamton universities chem department. Such a shame.
Chem107 is designed to weed out people who either don't have the capacity or the dedication for a science major. He's a funny, dad-jokes prof who sometimes brings his corgi in before exams. If you don't dedicate a lot of time to studying for this class, you won't pass. Do your work and do it well, and you'll be okay.
Dr. Turnpenny is a great professor who helps make a challenging intro level course fun (well, almost) and manageable. He holds personal office hours and group hours each week, and is very accessible. He makes a 200 person lecture feel a lot smaller and more personal. Honestly no complaints.
An engaging and stimulating lecturer for the difficult and monotonous subject that he teaches. Although the class is difficult (particularly the quizzes) it is always consistent and fair. Make sure all concepts are understood both inside and out for success in this class. Pay attention, designate time to study, and you will do well.
The material is hard enough without his tricky quizzes and exams. He'll do examples during class but nothing even near the sheer difficulty of his assessments. Even with a firm grasp on concepts, the class is still exceptionally challenging On the plus side, the final is ACS standardized so it almost seems easy compared to the class.
So, here's the deal. The course is a weed out course definitely. It's not about memorizing terms, it's about being able to connect everything together and understand the concepts. The class is very cut throat because its a point system. You can't afford to lose points on exams, quizzes, hw, labs. Dont expect to get an A without trying.
Turnpenny is an extremely engaging professor. He wants his students to succeed, despite the hard material. The course itself is difficult, but Turnpenny is the best of the Chemistry 107 teachers. The test and quizzes are difficult, but they're the same for all the teachers. He will cover the material the best of all of them. Watch CLT office hour!!
Dr. Turnpenny is an absolute gem. He's hilarious and keeps what could otherwise be a horribly boring hour actually quite fun. I've fallen asleep in all of my classes this semester except for this one. He makes a 200 person lecture hall seem small and he's very eager to answer questions. But this class is not easy. The CLT videos will save your GPA!
Best chem professor at the university. He will answer all your questions and get you to think during lecture.
Chem 107 & 108 are hard but this isn't Turnpenny's fault. Go to class, pay attention(his lectures are very interesting and engaging), and go to his NUMEROUS office hours and you should have no problems.
Probably one of the hardest classes in the university, but Turnpenny really tries to make it as bearable as possible. IF YOU TAKE 107/108 TAKE IT WITH TURNPENNY... CHANGE YOUR SCHEDULE AROUND idc ... you will regret taking intro chem with any other professor.
Dr. Turnpenny is the best chemistry professor you can get, he makes everything very clear. The quizzes can seem hard but the group quizzes are open notes and on the loncapa quizzes you can sometimes google the questions. The tests are hard but even if you don't do well on them the final is super easy, it brought me up from a B to an A-.
He is a great professor to have, and if I didnt have him for chem id probably have done a lot worse. The material is very tough, but he does his best to make it as graspable as possible. Hes very respectful to students, and he will always answer your questions.
He is a very good professor but for a very hard subject. He wants you to do good, and tries to help you and to have you understand the material. Show up to class, and it will help.
Turnpenny is great. I had him for 107 and 108. He realizes his class is hard, and he wants you to do well. It sucks but it's just something you have to get through. Go to the CLT Office Hours, they help a lot and show him you're trying. I got 60s on all exams, and then a 95 on final. This class isn't as hard as you think it is, you'll be okay.
Chem 107 is really hard but Turnpenny is by far the best prof for it. I have been to the other lectures and Turnpenny is much better. You have to go to class for clicker points and because you will not understand anything without it. It's a mistake to take the class with anyone else.
Lectures are not too boring and he is very funny and interactive with the class. The material is extremely hard and you need a strong Chem background to do good. Make sure to start studying early because once you fall behind it will be impossible to catch up. Unfortunately pre-med majors need this class, so good luck!
Turnpenny is the best of the chemistry teachers at bing. He does his best to make tough subject matter interesting and understandable. He's a nice guy and tries to help as much as he can with the course curriculum, although it is hard.
Turnpenny made chem so much more bearable. His lectures were always lighthearted, and he always took the time to talk to his students and ease into lecture. He is a genuine guy who cares for his students- it isn't his fault chemistry is a demanding topic. Lectures helped somewhat, but he often didn't take the time required to review a hard topic.
The class is difficult but he teaches it well. He can be a little immature/petty on occasion but it will never affect your grade. He cares about how well his classes do and really does want you to learn. Definitely the best choice out of all the Chem 107 lecturers.
I've heard he's the best out of the chemistry professors. Class is hard but not because of him. There is no curve, but the course syllabus is adjusted in the beginning of the class so anything above an 88 is an A-, 78 is B- and so on. Four tests and the lowest of the first three is dropped. The final cannot be dropped but is significantly easier.
He is the best proffessor for this class. He tries to talk with students and is funny with his dogs, chem jokes. Going to CLTs and office hours will help you tremendously if you learn better with one on one. You have to work hard in this course with labs, loncapas, discussions, iclicker. It is possible to learn chemistry with time and committment.
I loved having Turnpenny as a professor, he was great at explaining all the topics and was very friendly if you had questions. The class is a lot of work though, with labs and problem sets. Make sure you study for this class and understand every part of the material. Bonus: he brings his dogs to your tests!
Turnpenny does a great job explaining topics in lecture and makes even difficult topics extremely understandable, as long as you pay attention. Tests and quizzes were fair, work was manageable, and as long as you understand the big picture of topics and don't get overwhelmed, you will do well.
I've never taken a chem class before, and Turnpenny made it somewhat bearable; but he expects everyone to already know the basics. Lectures weren't really helpful. Self-study is key to doing well. He's a really nice and funny guy though. Group quizzes are hell and should be discarded. Labs are too hard (depending on TA), it cost me my A.
Chem dept. at Binghamton is atrocious and doesn't care about the students. They require TP to be a jerk, but that doesn't totally absolve him. Labs are pure busy work, taking hours each week while doing nothing to reinforce the material. Exams are nothing like what's covered in class. His TAs make grading mistakes that they refuse to correct.
Turnpenny is the best professor for Chem for sure, but the class is extremely difficult. Lab is tedious, there is a quiz every week, and a homework set due every other. Lab reports take hours and are graded harshly. Group quizzes are the absolute worst. You can survive if you go to the UTS tutoring and study on your own.
I love this professor and he's a super nice guy. Sadly, this class is still impossible. If you are not naturally gifted in understanding chemistry, good luck. You will study for hours upon days and still get a mediocre grade. He's a great teacher the class is just so hard and the department makes an A almost impossible.
He's a wonderful professor with a lot of dad jokes. Make sure you pay attention because he mentions things that are not on the powerpoint. Also, there are clickers in class. Homework and lab are the easiest things to get points for. You can also literally pass the class even if you fail both tests, so there are many ways for you to do well. Study!!
Best professor I have ever had. He explains the material in a way that makes sense and answers students questions in a clear way. By far the best general chemistry professor and also makes the exams and quizzes. He is so nice at office hours and tries to engage his students. Chemistry is a hard subject, but he makes it seem manageable
I love Turnpenny he drops the lowest quiz, exam and lab grades. The best way to pass is to look at old test papers as he repeats questions just with slightly different numbers and most of them if not all are on course hero. HW is free points take your B+ or A if you are exceptionally good at chemistry.
It's a great course. You learn a great deal. However, this course is quite rigorous. Do not think you will walk in, do nothing, and then be rewarded an A. You must work. Turnpenny does, however, make the course very approachable. He is a very effective professor.
Turnpenny is definitely the professor you WANT to have for the GenChem courses. Easily the best communicator, most helpful, and very supportive. UTS helps a lot too. Study (!) for quizzes and try hard on labs; they're excessive so try to get them done right away each week. Study with others and review old tests if you can for the 3 exams. Good luck
Solid choice for a gen chem prof. The professor doesn't matter as much as the lab TA who grades the labs and can vary in how strict they run the lab class. I've been to several lectures of each professor and Turnpenny explains the material in the best way to help prepare you for the exam. He's also very understanding of, and receptive to, students.
Good professor, good at teaching, but the course is really hard. Must spend lots of time after class to get a good grade.
Professor Turnpenny has been my favorite professor by far. I didn't like a lot of things in the class, but that is the fault of the chem department as a whole, as it is somewhat standardized. Doctor Turnpenny was always available to give help outside of class, he was understanding, and above all else very fair. Couldn't recommend him enough.
Great Professor really hard course but he does his best and cares, doesnt excuse how inexplicably hard the course is intended to be
Turnpenny is a great professor. Yes, the material was very hard, however he makes the course really fun. For all the freshman coming in to take CHEM107/108 the key to this class is not letting other peoples stress get to you; utilize tutoring; and stay on top of the chapters. Understanding concepts is really key in this course!! Heed my advice! :)
Dr. Turnpenny tries really hard to make the intro chem material understandable. He was definitely a great lecturer and he cares a lot about his students. It's a hard class, but if you put in the time and effort it's definitely passable.
Awesome professor for a difficult class. Really cares about all of his students and makes sure there are several resources available for extra help. One of the best professors Ive had at Binghamton by far.
Best Chem professor in Binghamton.
He is a really great teacher who clearly cares about how his students do. Somehow he makes a huge lecture class feel very interactive. The class is really demanding, and you are going to have to put a lot of work into it but he does a good job at teaching the material
He makes the class as interesting and as relatable as he possibly can. He created the course, and he makes it difficult so when you take the ACS exam for the final, it is easy. Gives pop quizzes every so often during lecture to make sure you are paying attention. Labs can be annoying, but all in all, if you put in the work you can do well.
This is a weed out class and it's very difficult. You must read the textbook, attend office hours, and do the hw to do well. There r iclicker pop quiz questions so it's crucial to show up to class. The tests r very hard and not like the hw. Get old exams, that's how you'll do well. Make sure you get good grades on lab bc you it'll boost your grade.
Just like 107 but it's harder bc the topics r all new to everyone. The tests r very difficult so it's important to read the textbook , attend office hours, do hw, and get old exams (biggie). 108 is time demanding not esp w/ the lab section. Do well on labs since its sorta free points, go to the TAs, they will tell u what to do to get full points.
It's not difficult to pass the class, but if you want to get a decent grade, you definitely need to put in the time and effort. The exams are much more difficult than the final exam, but it makes you more prepared honestly.
This class is intense, hard, and lots of work, but it is do-able. Turnpenny is funny, caring, and passionate about chemistry, which helped me actually enjoy this class. Despite the heavy workload and the mandatory classes, this is definitely a class you can do well in as long as you work hard and don't give up on it.
Turnpenny is a hilarious and great teacher. I have never enjoyed learning chemistry before his class, but he made it fun. It's definitely a tough class, but if you put the work in it's all doable.
Chem is a tough topic but turnpenny really does his best to make it understandable. Hes a great lecturer, and does an amazing job explaining tough topics. Really patient and caring.
The class is very difficult, but the teacher does his best to make things easy to understand. You will have to study hard, but the teacher will do his best to help you.
He's a cool guy, probably the best out of all the gen chem profs. Pretty clear when teaching but makes the tests a bit too hard compared to what we do in class.
Turnpenny is definitely the best Intro Chem professor at Binghamton, but the entire course pretty much depends on how hard you're willing to work. His lectures are pretty interesting and he seems to care about the class's understanding and will stop and answer questions. Definitely recommend Chegg and tutoring to get an A, though.
definitely the best chem professor bing has to offer, and intro chem is the most difficult chem bing has to offer. Definitely try to take it with him, or sit in his for his lectures, super helpful. also he has insane levels of dad energy
there are random clicker questions nearly every lecture, very hard topic but very good lecturer, tests are hard, loncapa homeworks are annoying but easy grade boosters, textbook is not needed (but can be a little useful during group quizzes but not necessary)
I don't think gen Chem can possibly be taught any better than the way Dr. Turnpenny teaches it. The material is rather difficult, but he somehow makes it seem easy.
Dr. Turnpenny is he best chem professor you could choose. He makes a lot of fun dad jokes and actually wants to hear feedback from students about the course. Tests are fair, as well as quizzes, and Turnpenny makes sure there are lots of resources to help you out (I recommend Chemflix!) I'm praying he's assigned to my next semester lecture!
this was by far the hardest class ive ever taken, doesn't help that my TA was trash, clicker in every class, quiz once a week, if you don't keep up on studying you won't pass
Really good at taking the time to explain concepts and answer peoples questions. Good powerpoints with pretty much any notes you really need but being in class helps with making it actually work in problems. He also brings his dogs before the tests and they are sometimes wearing costumes. He clearly enjoys what he does too.
super hard class- but its do-able if you put in the effort. tons of outside of the classroom work- its insane. tests and quizes are super hard, but the final wasnt too bad
Easy class if you were good at high school chem. I don't recommend getting the textbook as I didn't open it. Try to get past tests to study from. Great professor.
don't take this course unless you're ready to put in a lot of time studying and doing work to get a good grade. however, once you're used to the amount of workload it's easier to manage!
Good professor, makes the class pretty interesting. My best advice would be to read the textbook and do the practice problems associated with them. Watch the Chemflix videos and use any additional resources you have. CHEM107 is considered a "weed out" class for many, so work hard, and you will do great.
Turnpenny is a decent teacher. If you do extra like go to office hours and the help room you should do good in the class. Lectures can be boring but they are mandatory because of clicker questions for a grade.
I LOVE DR. TURNPENNY!!! He is an amazing professor and person. I couldn't have done this class with anyone else. I wish I can have him again! Definitely take this class with him!!!
Living chem god. If you have him, you are very lucky. I can't imagine having a better professor. He really dumbs down the topics. Chemflix is AMAZING. Quizzes (esp loncapa) can be VERY hard but tests are usually straightforward. Make sure you understand the logic behind problems from the slides. Some of the TAs suck. Sad i'll never have him again.
Turnpenny is def the better gen chem lecturer! He cares about students understanding the material and wants to make sure you understand whats going on. He's really receptive to questions and makes gen chem a bit less boring with his dad jokes. Overall, take him over Murphy or Grewer for 108
Professor Turnpenny was an absolutely fantastic teacher. I had him for CHEM 107 which prompted me to schedule to have him for 108 as well. He is a very engaging lecturer who does a great job making massive classes interesting. Even with the transition online for 108 due to COVID he was still an amazingly good instructor. I highly recommend him.
funny guy and great professor, made lectures fun. Course is difficult, make sure to stay on top things.
Gen-chem is tough but turnpenny does a good job with his lectures. I personally preferred his lectures compared to Murphy's but both are good.
This is Turnpenny's first semester of teaching orgo so his lectures are not as efficient as his Chem 107/108 ones. However, after a few semesters I'm sure he will be a lot better with it. I personally prefer Kissling's lectures and office hours only because she has been doing orgo longer. Great guy, just needs more time to adjust!
Dr. Turnpenny's office hours are great! If you can't study efficiently on your own, definitely go during office hours(Turn your webcam on, he definitely will get to know you) Be ready to read the textbook before class; it helps a lot! (this semester is the online format). You had paid your tuition, you have to get the credits!
I had Dr. Turnpenny for chem 107/108, and when I found out he was teaching chem 231 I was elated! He is a great professor and a great teacher. I do think because it was his first time teaching orgo, sometimes he was quite confusing with his explanations, but with more time he will be as great as he is with gen chem. Definitely recommend him!
Dr. Turnpenny is an amazing person and I've had him for both gen chem and orgo now. It was his first semester of teaching orgo and he did a good job but I found myself watching Dr. K's videos for clarity on many topics. He is very caring and will always reexplain topics but sometimes he was hard to follow.
I had Prof. Turnpenny for Orgo 1 this semester. The course is very difficult but Prof. Turnpenny makes a point to go over difficult topics well in lecture. I highly recommend revisiting recordings if you get the chance online. Overall, despite the difficulty of the course I believe that Prof. Turnpenny was one of the best to instruct it.
Dr. Turnpenny is an amazing professor. Will a difficult subject like chem it's nice to have a professor that genuinely cares about the success of his students.
Turnpenny is an amazing chem teacher! I doubt I would have survived the first half of orgo without him. Now that I'm in orgo II, I really miss having him as a teacher because he was always able to explain things in a way that made sense to me. He really cares about the students and wants us all to succeed.
Hilarious dude. Makes me laugh during CHEM 105, I simply cannot lie. He ate super hot sauce for us to demonstrate capsaicin solubility ($picy compound in peppers) when we learned about it. Love this guy, he's obviously very knowledgeable about chemistry and does a good job explaining it
Professor Turnpenny is great! His lectures are very interactive and he knows how to joke around. He has frequent office hours and posts chemflix videos. He knows to explain concepts well. Sometimes he can talk a little fast but overall a great guy.
Chemistry is a really tough subject especially at Binghamton but Turnpenny makes it so much more bearable. He's really funny during lectures and he even takes some time before lectures to ask how we are and about our mental health. Chemflix is useful too. You need to study a LOT to succeed in the class though.
Prof Turnpenny is a great 107/108 teacher. He loves to crack jokes and actually cares about his students. While the content of this class could be hard at times, his Chemflix videos are amazing to help prepare for discussions or tests. Overall, great guy, teaches well and would take a class w him again
Turnpenny is a great professor. He is very respectable, shows care for the students and encourages you to seek help when needed. It's important to know that the class is not just based on the lectures, because you will need to spend time outside the class studying to pass. Other than that, Turnpenny really makes sure that you pass the class.
Turnpenny took this weed-out class and made it ten times harder. Exams are overly difficult and homework/assignments do not adequately prepare you. Often he would make everything due the day after the exam, then give us an extension a few hours before the due date. That being said, he is a good instructor if you struggle with chemistry.
His class is engaging and he's funny, and you can tell he cares about what he teaches. Class is hard, but he makes sure to go slow enough to explain everything while still finishing on time. He cares a lot about his students and it's clear from how he has them explain topics and asks how they are.
Dr. Turnpenny is amazing. He begins class by asking us how we're doing, and makes class fun and engaging for us. He understands how difficult chemistry is and provides plenty of resources to do well. Make sure you complete all the homework and any other LONCAPA work you're given, it helps your grade tremendously. Utilize your TAs and UTS!
Get ready to waste the first at least ten minutes of each lecture discussing the most irrelevant topics. He rushes through any math and spends too much time answering questions that were covered. He is overall a nice person and enjoys getting to know his students. Homework counts A LOT in this course so make sure to get all 1000000 hours of it done
Great guy and makes lectures enjoyable
Alright, I had both Murphy (104) and Turnpenny (105) for Chem. The structure of the class was identical both semesters, which I really appreciate from the general chem department. The only thing I can say about Turnpenny is that I felt he became very demotivated to teach earlier on and was rushing after side tracking. But, he was a a nice guy!!
He does his best to make class fun by cracking jokes or using teen slang to be more "relatable". He is helpful with answering questions in class and there are many ways to practice outside of class. His main problem is not starting class for 5-7 min and then rushing the last 10, but he usually reviews the material next class which helps. Great prof
i think he often tried too hard, wasted class time talking about random things, then blamed students for not showing up to office hours if they didn't do well... like just spend all of class time teaching and not being goofy and people might do better. the class has many, many assignments
Great professor during lectures, cares about your questions. Attendance isnt mandatory but there are iclicker questions. Tests are hard but homework helps a lot. Study atleast a week beforehand !!
A difficult course that really demands you to study effectively for it. The pace of the class is super fast and easy to get lost in. Also a lot of work. Lots of exams and weekly group work. Gives homework that sometimes feels like busy work which is annoying.
This class is hard, but I found Turnpenny to be genuinely caring and really wants his students to succeed. He is always asking for feedback from the class on what he can do better. I wasn't doing great at first but then he recommended a different way to study and i actually started doing much better. Group work heavy and a lot of tests.
Don't take Chem 107 if you aren't a chem or biochem major. The tests and quizzes are extremely tough. He rushes through the notes during lecture and even if you pay attention you might not understand what's going on. Participation is necessary as he uses Iclicker and it counts toward your grade.
CHEM107 in general is one of the most annoying classes I've ever taken. Turnpenny is very gentle with his teaching and leads his lectures more like a conversation which facilitates students' questions. Downside: he speeds through entire chapters in 1.5 classes. Homework + office hours are very helpful. Good luck
This class is ridiculously hard and the professors do absolutely nothing to help you out. The pre-lecture assignments and hw are not helpful whatsoever, the weekly challenges and exams are incredibly difficult and they do NOT curve anything. You will not get extra credit.
Go to office hours and work hard to do well. Dr Turnpenny has funny lectures and always engages with his students. If you have any difficulties in the class, tutoring, office hours, and chemflix is a big help.
Chem is super hard in general, the tests have questioned designed to trick you. However doing not great on the tests can be counteracted by doing your homework and participating in Iclickers. Turnpenny always took time to ask how everyone was at the start of lecture and made sure people would understand by explaining things as many times as need.
Tests are difficult but there are numerous, easier, assignments that make up a larger portion of the grade. He really cares about his students, and is always there outside of class. Chem itself is difficult, however there is no curve
He was a very average professor. Nothing great but nothing terrible to say about him. Chem 104 was just very difficult in general, and I don't think he added to or took away from how hard the class was. Definitely be prepared for super difficult tests and lots of studying.
He is a great teacher in general, and does make a good effort to make sure his students understand. However, the test are extremely difficult (avg class scores ranging from 60-70 no curves). I am not majoring in chemistry so the class was a struggle. However if u go to lectures and put in the work you should be able to do well in this class
This class is the most difficult class I have ever taken in my life. I have had 6 assignments 10 hours apart from each other from this one class. The homework sets take 6 hours to do, the post labs take too long, lab reports will take you 7 hours, quizzes are unreasonably hard, and tests are trying to trick you and not teach you the material.
The lectures are either good or bad depending on the day. He makes sure to answer questions as well as he can, but some of the harder material he doesn't spend enough time on. iClicker questions may be annoying but they are easy and help so much. The tests are pretty hard (25 MC 5 SA), but the final question are like the clicker questions in class.
He's a decent professor. Chemflix helps a lot but is NEVER accessible through email and doesn't care if the whole class fails a test.
Gen chem 2 is a very challenging class as it is but Prof. Turnpenny is definitely a decent professor. His tests are fair but the content is extremely challenging. An A is possible if you go to all his office hours and go to tutoring. Lab reports are much harder than needed because the labs sometimes went over content before being taught in lecture.
Overall, Turnpenny is a great professor; he cares a lot for his students, and clearly wants them to succeed. The content and workload can be difficult, but Turnpenny provides students with a lot of helpful resources. If you don't understand stuff from stuff from the lectures, go to his office hours or ta hours!! They are very helpful
Dr Turnpenny is a great guy that clearly knows what he's talking about. Exams are quite difficult if students are not familiar with the process of how practice problems were solved in class. Do not study by only re-reading lecture slides; familiarize yourself with the mathematical processes of solving problems and use Turnpenny's Chemflix videos.
Professor Truepenny's exams were the hardest exams I have ever taken. He acts like the material is easy and all in class. But then when you see the HW and Exams your like I have never seen anything like this. Even his chemflix don't help because there also basic problems.
Awesome dude! He really cares about the student and he's very available outside of the class time (ex: Office Hours) to help. Just study and do all the assignments and you'll do great.
CHEM 104 in general seems to be difficult for most people, but Dr. Turnpenny provides several opportunities for us to get extra help. He's accessible through office hours and he does weekly chemflix sessions. I find that Dr. Turnpenny explains concepts very clearly and he is always receptive to feedback.
Great professor! He truly cares about his students and gives them many opportunities to succeed (chemflix videos, extra credit, drops your lowest test grade, etc.) His tests are challenging, so you must study a lot in advanced and go to lectures. You must put in the work to get a good grade.
Only got a good grade in the class because of the lab component. Failed every test but did all of the homework and lab work to boost my grade. Going to class doesn't help much because material is hard. Nothing personal against Turnpenny but the material is just hard to grasp.
I think he was average, the class itself is very difficult and he didn't change that much. He does offer some extra credit but the tests are extremely difficult even with extensive studying. He does give lots of options that help for better understanding. I think he went a bit too fast considering it is usually first semester freshman,no going back
considering the topics covered in this class is a little boring, he does a good job at making the lecture pretty interesting. he did make the class a little harder than it had to be considering the final, but it was very manageable. homeworks and practice sets are easy points to boost your grade and are very helpful when it comes to studying.
I love this man. I didn't have too much difficulty with the course, but if you do, UTILIZE THE RESOURCES HE PROVIDES!! Go to office hours, chemflix, tutoring, anything you can. They are all very helpful and provide practice problems at the caliber of the weekly challenges and tests, so it is great to build on the foundation from lecture.
Dr. Turnpenny is awesome and did a really good job explain tough material and helping me understand it better. He is a super nice guy and takes an interest into students' lives. He makes the lectures really entertaining and engaging which is awesome
Dr. Turnpenny is really a joy to have as a professor, he explains complex concepts in fun and clear ways that always had me paying attention in class even though it was at 9 am. The only thing I dislike about the class is how group work heavy it is, your grade can really depend on how good your group is. Otherwise, the class is great.
He is a great professor. The class is hard, and I studied 20+ hours a week just to get a B+. He insists there is no curve, but he gave us extra credit that definitely helped my grade. The tests are hard, but as long as you use Knewton Alta practice problems, you will be fine. Make sure you go to class for points.
I had an extremely hard time with the test, even after studying for days. You are lucky to get one basic example of difficult concepts and then are tested on the hardest variation of said concept. Make sure to at least attend class for participation points. I chose a different professor for chem 105, hopefully he explains the material better.
Turnpenny and Murphy are both GOATS. I would attend Murphy's office hours if you're struggling because he literally feeds you the information you need to know. Both are super nice and friendly and want you to succeed.
Great professor, but got through the class by memorizing the slides. Group work brought by grade down. Tests are extremely easy compared to lecture problem sets. Most TAs are useless (several didn't know how to do redox; took three TAs and an hour for one LON-CAPA gas law question). One TA solved it in 2 mins.
He likes to explain things in complexity instead of simplicity. It was a struggle to pass tests. He is lecture heavy. Be aware of morning class bc you can fall asleep easily. If you study, you should be fine.
Professor Turnpenny is a great teacher who cares a lot about his students and puts a lot of effort into making the classes interesting. The class itself can be rather challenging though
Turnpenny is a great guy, though he does speed through lectures so you have to be on constant attention. I got through the class by going to UTS, viewing topics ahead of time, and reviewing the material at least once a week. This class is difficult but not impossible to get an A in.
Turnpenny is a great professor. Truly cares abt his students and will bring his dogs to greet us after tests. The class pace and difficulty are not his fault, its just chem and he does great at accommodating. I relied heavily on UTS and its not impossible to get an A. I worked so I didn't have much time but even then I did pretty good.
Dr. Turnpenny is a fantastic lecturer who truly cares about seeing his students succeed. Lectures are pretty straightforward, and it is easy to ask questions in class, even in a lecture with hundreds of students. He also records Chemflix videos during his office hours, which helps for preparing for tests.
He's an ok professor, but at the end of the day, before exams, I just had to memorize slides and get through that way. The homework was super hard and the tests were in the middle. Group discussion and lab save your grade. Prof just read off the slides after we got through the orgo half and didn't add much explanation for biochem.
Even from understanding the information taught in the lecture, it's still impossible to pass his tests. Did a bunch of chemflix videos and so much studying to get a terrible grade. Make sure your homework grades and lab excercises are high cause they are easy. Don't take 107-108 take 104-105-106 if you can.
He is good at asking for feedbacks after every exam + give an additional exam to let students drop one. But his lectures are not great; you are pretty much self-taught to do good in this class. Biochem was the worst since he did not thoroughly explain the concept. Heavy on memorization.Tests are super heavy as outside class work are on there.
Dr. Turnpenny was a really kind and well versed professor. He really knew what he was talking about for the most part, and despite my lack of interest in chemistry, it was much more approachable. He really listens to his students and wants to make the learning process as clear and accessible as possible.
Turnpenny has no sympathy towards students and I hated having him this semester. He is very funny and caring to some extent but will not care if you are having issues or need extra help. I find that sometimes his humor gets in the way of helping students and that all the TA office hours I attended and all the tutoring I received was more effective.
Turnpenny is a below average lecturer. His slides don't help much and the majority of your learning will come from doing your homework and watching videos on your own time. Lab and discussion count for a good portion of your grade so keep up with that. Exams are tough but nothing unexpected is on them. Very chatty during lec. which is distracting.
The homework was hard but he would always help during office hours. He is a nice professor but the tests did not really match the practice problems so it was hard to gauge what to study. My advice is to do well on the labs and the group work because those can really boost your overall grade.
Dr. Turnpenny is super kind and patient! Very respectful and always ask for feedback. His team of TAs this semester was also amazing always available for help. The exams are fair--be sure to study ahead of time. He always throws in a bonus question too. Great course and fair grader with extra credit for participation.
dr. turnpenny is one of the best professors i've had. he does an amazing job of teaching such a difficult course with so much content. he offers so many resources to help and always makes sure to answer every student's question. the exams are challenging but reasonable, just study a lot and watch his chemflix videos!!! does iclickers for attendance
The class is difficult but Turnpenny is a pretty good prof. He tries explaining the best he can. Lectures can be confusing. Homework and tests are hard.
amazing professor. always receptive to questions and talking to students even in a 200 person lecture. Follows lecture slides created by department, so anything weird in the slides isn't his fault. Explains things clearly. Only homework is a weekly problem set, takes an hour or two. Very low amount of work and tests are directly from slides. Easy $
108 itself is a hard class. I will say that Dr. Turnpenny tried really hard to keep us engaged during lectures but his homework's were so difficult and tests were hard to prepare for as the slides we were given vs then ones used in class lack any of the practice problems and any of his notes, which is where a majority of the lesson was.
Best professor I've had! The lectures are each about 60 slides minimum sometimes even reached 80 slides and would be finished in about 3 days of class. As long as you start studying ahead of time you will be fine. He's great and really listens to his students feedback. The exams got easier as time went by and even have an option to drop one!
Lots of resources to help you succeed, but you have to put time into it. Homeworks and attendance were designed to be easy points to offset the tests/ discussions. Lectures weren't always the most informative, but they helped make a solid foundation that you could expand via the online textbook (free), Loncapa practice problems, or help hours.
Had for both 104 and 105. the class is hard but he does give extra credit, he is a nice and funny guy. he does silly things sometimes to help the students learn a concept better and that is a super nice break considering it is a hard class. as long as you study, do your work, and do your I-clickers, you should be just fine.
Dr. Turnpenny is the best. So fun to listen to, so knowledgeable, wants his students to succeed. Key to acing the class is just studying the lecture slides and knowing the content on them very well. Tests were always very fair in my opinion. Many resources are available for students to get help outside of class
Dr. Turnpenny was very thorough and professional when teaching this course. The course is graded out of 1000 points, and the tests make up a significant portion. His tests are difficult and he does not give practice exams, but he has Chemflix hours and other resources. The course could be set up better to have the students' best interest in mind.
great teacher for this subject. gives you lots of resources for extra help and there are group quizzes with open notes. highly recommend you take his class.
The class was ok, lectures were so boring
go to chemflix if you want to do good on the exams. he's okay at teaching but answered so many dumb and irrelevant questions. he's nice but lecturing isn't the best. iclickers are graded and attendance is mandatory that way.
Great professor, but some struggle with the content since its not the easiest
I love love love Turnpenny; my absolute favorite teacher I have had so far. He is a very understanding person and his classes are very well structured. He has very flexible office hours and provides extra resources to help students learn (Chemflix). Overall, I definitely recommend taking any of his classes.
Turnpenny shows genuine care for the subject and students' success. The homework can be a lot if you wait until the last minute, but that's an overall CHEM104 thing. Would definitely take again.
I think hes an okay professor. He tries to be a little lenient cuz he knows we r first years but he gets distracted a lot and ends up rushing thru the material in the last minute of class. he has a lot of resources available, USE all of them to do well. he's mid.
Amazing professor. Explains everything in a simple way. Always answers questions. Has lots of help hours/Chemflix. He is really fair. The tests are not extremely hard but not too easy. The final was really easy compared to tests. Want to get a a high grade? Personally, I went to Chemflix/also watched old vids, did my ALEKS HW, and did UTS.
Pay attention in lecture, take good notes, do your homework, GO TO CHEMFLIX. Tests are very fair. He obviously cares and is a very engaging professor. My favorite class of the semester by far.
Posts all his lecture slides.Uses iClicker(surprise questions after lecture portions, counts toward your participation, but drops 10% to account for absences)Weekly group quizzes, tests, exams and drops one of each. ALEKS homework gets annoying, but if you take time to understand the explanations given,it can really help. Taking him again for CHEM 105.
Gen chem is hard, but Turnpenny makes it the best it could be. Good explanations outside of class, go to office hours or use chemflix. Best gen chem prof at Bing
I hate chem so much that I can't help but hate Turnpenny. He's genuinely a nice guy, but he puts me through hell every week with chemistry weekly challenges, learning assessments (which is just a fancy name for tests), and Aleks.
TERRIBLE, the test never matches with lecture, lab NEVER lines with lecture, and the discussions are impossible to do. Everything is hard and there is SO much homework. I'll go to TA hours and TA's will either not even know how to do the question, or we will sit there trying to figure out 1 question for the whole hour. Terrible, terrible class.
Fun lecturer. Very clear and does a great job at communicating ideas simply.
Prof Turnpenny really cares about his students & has a great sense of humor. His lectures are sometimes poorly paced and he rushes through a lot of important information in the last 5 minutes which gets frustrating. Chem is hard regardless but if you're taking it either way Turnpenny's lectures are fun and engaging
Honestly he's probably the best teacher for chem 105. The class is going to be hard regardless, but turnpenny at least takes the time to explain concepts. Stay on top of the aleks and STUDY for the tests and a B is very very achievable. ACS final is curved but idk by how much, regular tests and weekly challenged are never curved.
Had him for both 104 and 105, he's a genuinely nice and funny guy, not his fault that all the grading criteria is demanded by the chem department. It may have just been me so over chem at this point, but I genuinely think he was better at teaching the basics of 104, maybe stick to Dr. Murphy for 105. Don't neglect ALEKS, it will carry your grade.
I wish I could give Turnpenny a 5/5 based on his cheerful and funny personality, but academically, Turnpenny's structure of the course is insanely confusing. He teaches in lecture, only to surprise you with the most tongue-twisting exams. TA help hours aren't helpful, because the TAs don't even know half the material. He was likeable though.
Turnpenny made Chem a lot easier to digest with simple explanations that could be followed if you pay attention in class. He also gave out a lot of tips for solving problems and using formulas that other professors didn't for the same course.
If you have the privilege of taking a class with Dr. Turnpenny you know how awesome he is. Really engaging lectures, and his office hours are very helpful. Very tough class, but he is very knowledgeable. Use all your resources if you want to do well!
Extremely nice professor who likes to crack jokes in class. He tries to break down the material for students as much as possible. He actually wants his students to succeed.
Turnpenny made general Chemistry more digestible with his clear explanations. His lectures are fast-paced for Chem 105 due to the amount of course content, but he ensures that students understand and ask questions before moving on to other topics. He gives practical and useful advice for applying concepts and formulae that other lecturers don't.
Good class and easy to attend.
Turnpenny is an absolutely awesome guy and Gen Chem is just a hard class but if you put in the work you will be fine. You don't need to do perfect on the tests, you can even get all 80s, and still get an A, just make sure to attend all lectures because of IClicker.
This class was hard, but the professor helped to make it bearable. He was always available to help and gave extra time when it was needed for good reasons. Even though I was sick most of the semester, I was able to keep up with the class, understand the material, and do well in the class because of his kindness and commitment to teaching.
This class is intimidating at first but turnpenny offers lots of resources and outside help. You could bomb all the tests and still get a decent grade. Go to lectures because they use Iclicker for participation. Huge tip is to use tests from previous years to study.
Could've explained complex concepts better, but made himself available and made class entertaining sometimes.
He's a great and funny professor, he tries to make the class as entertaining as he can but don't rely on just lectures to get you through. The lectures is just a preview but you are expected to learn the material on your own. He provides a lot of resources and makes himself accessible to help but be ready to put in minimum 2 hours a day everyday.
Personally, I did not enjoy class with Dr. Turnpenny. When you ask questions he just repeats what he previously said or says something else that is more confusing. I didn't feel he prepared me well for tests. He moved way too fast in the lecture. I will not be taking any more chem classes with him. If you have the option TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR
GOAT of genchem. It's a fast-paced course,so keep up on studying, but Turnpenny is easily my favorite of the Genchem profs.
Gen chem is going to be hard, but Turnpenny is a good professor. Put in the work on your own, big lectures make it harder, and you'll be fine.
had him for chem 104 and 105. tries to make lectures enjoyable and explains concepts at a reasonable pace. the format of the courses may not be ideal but he is a great professor
The content can seem overwhelming, but Professor Turnpenny really tries his best to engage the class. His lecture style might not be for everyone, but there are lots of places to get help if you need. Go to office hours!
I struggled with how fast he went during lectures and often fell behind because of it. I understand, though, because this class had a lot to go over in such a short timeframe. Really funny guy and kept the lectures interesting. Actually knows how to teach rather than just lecturing.
Took him for CHEM 104 and opted to take him for CHEM 105 as well. Chemistry is chemistry, it's not going to be fun. Turnpenny makes it digestible, though, and I think he's helped a ton with my understanding. He's a silly guy and does a great job with giving you difficult material. The nightly discussion sections are a huge pain.
He's funny but he pmo
keeps lectures engaging and entertaining, knows how to get across complex subjects, and assigns useful homework that reinforces material learned in class.
If i could rate higher than a 5 I would, one of the best professors you will ever have at Bing.
A prof. who knows his material inside and out, and will dedicate immense energy and countless hours to ensure his students succeed. He makes sure to keep his lectures engaging and accessible, is incredibly receptive to questions, and isn't afraid to lighten things up. Dr. Turnpenny is a treasure!
Turnpenny is great!!!! He stops and makes sure you understand the material, teaches slowly, and you can tell he truly cares about his students. He genuinely made chemistry easier for me, and I would 1000% take another class with him. Highly recommend!!
I prefer him over Murphy. His lectures are pretty engaging and his chem-related jokes actually help me remember things. The class is pretty difficult but you can tell he wants students to do well. I went to his office hours once and I didn't really like it tho bc he mainly focused on his regular group of students who he seemed to know well.
Dr. Turnpenny makes the information very digestible by using simple language, his slides are clear + explanatory. I liked his resources such as office hours and online videos where he goes over test-level questions comprehensively. His tests are very straightforward, it's clear what concepts he wants you to understand. I liked him a lot!
This class is difficult but if you pay attention and do the homework you'll do well. His lectures can be long and hard to follow as he goes in-depth on things that will not be on test. You can tell he really knows this subject well and is passionate about it. Super funny guy, makes the class fun and entertaining when he can.
All chem classes and tests are the same. So the difficulty doesn't really apply. However, if you're going to be forced to go to class to get your iclicker participation points, it better be with turnpenny (or Murphy), he makes the class fly. And a lot of the stuff he says in class sticks when taking the tests.
Probably the best professor you can get for general chemistry. Makes content very digestible and is an overall great instructor.
Got excused from 104, so the structure of the class was very new. Turnpenny was very understanding and helpful, especially during office hours. My problem in the class was the lack of practice problems; go online and find old exams; they are the best when preparing for exams. ALEKs is nothing like the exam, so the questions were unhelpful.
Prof Turnpenny is a great lecturer and makes lecture interesting. The class has weekly quizzes (open note) and has 5 tests, he offers multiple sources outside of class to help prepare.
I can talk all day about how much of a goat Dr Turnpenny is. Grading breakdown is clear cut. His lectures and this class are what helped me realize how much I enjoy chem. He is great at explaining, tests can be hard but doing practice problems makes passing very achievable. If you put in the effort this class is no where near as bad as people say.
turnpenny is the best out of the gen chem profs imo. super smart and you can tell he really cares about his students doing well. very good at explaining complex topics and takes time to answer questions during class. funny guy 10/10 recommend
Funny professor who cares a lot about his students.
He was a good professor. You have to pay attention to the lectures and can't get behind. Chem 104/105 is run by the whole department so how Turnpenny is individually matters less then how the entire department grades and runs the course. There is good extra credit in the beginning and although really annoying the ALEKS really helps.
Funny, runs Chemflix, literally understands how students think. Don't be fooled; he does give a lot of tests, but that's something the entire chemistry department does.
chem is hard and a lot of stuff is more abt the dept/content than the professors but turnpenny was great. always working to keep us engaged and hes a funny guy. made the best he could out of lectures. he tries to gives as many resources for success possible. just ask for help if struggling!!! def recommend him for 104/105.
Very knowledgeable about the subject and will explain things very well if you ask questions. Only problem with him is he'd sometimes rush or skim over stuff he saw as review or easy, but if you just ask him to clarify he will. Just study a decent amount out of class and do the ALEKS and you'll be fine
His lectures were so boring and basically useless. His exams were always tough 50 questions in an hour was not fair. His homework was also useless.
is super vague during lectures and skims over important topics. says chem metaphors that dont make sense and overcomplicate everything. lowk rude too i dont really recomend
Chem 104 is hard but Turnpenny is by far the best prof in the chem team. He drops the lowest test grade and weekly challenge. You have to go to class because attendance is apart of your grade and helps boost it. The final is sooo much easier than the tests/weekly challenges and was definitely a saving grace for me. Make sure you study in advance!!!
Do your Aleks modules (yourself) because practice is important, 5 tests, like 6 quizzes (some are group which then depends on how smart your group is.) I lowkey wish there were some changes made to 104 but its wtv. Turnpenny tho is a good teacher, quite likable and am taking him again next sem!
Gen Chem itself is a hard course, and everyone's test/curriculum for the course is the same, no matter who you have. Turnpenny was very open to questions and helpful during his office hours and tried his best to make lectures engaging. 5 tests, one drop, and 8 quizzes, 2 drops. Attendance is done through iClicker.
Not really his fault but the class is pretty difficult. The slides aren't very good either, and it goes so fast it's hard to follow. Had to watch a lot of videos outside of class. He's funny though and always open questions and to going into further explanation. Also tries to connect with kids even though the lecture is huge.
Honestly I started this course really frustrated and thinking Turnpenny was bad. He's not. Chem is just a hard class, but he provides many resources (Chemflix is my favorite) and professor help hours that can make a large lecture very personal. I hated chem but my opinion has completely changed and I think he is a great professor. DO THE I-CLICKER!
Lectures help, but you have to study most of the content yourself after class. He's a very funny and friendly guy and easy to talk to. His chemflix hours are especially helpful. Can rush through slides sometimes if he thinks we already know, so it's important to review. Definitely one of the better chem teachers though, from what I know of others,
