This instructor is the worst I have ever experienced in my four year college life in Purdue. He does not know how to teach at all. Lecture is not relevant to homework, homework is not relevant to exam, exam is not relevant to lecture. Attending his class is no better than self-study at home, which is more comfortable and less time-consuming.
This guy is terrible. His homework is nothing like his lectures and his tests are completely different from both. He is a nice guy and I think he wants to be a good teacher. However, when the average score on his tests are about %40 the problem is not the students. His bright spot is the homework is graded on effort and that helps save your grade.
Terrible teacher who teaches one thing, quizzes and tests on another and then curves all the failing tests so that it doesn't look bad. Awful do not recommend.
Worst Prof ever. Extremely confusing. No correlation between HW and Exam problems. Take the class next sem if he is your only option this sem.
Awful Prof. DO NOT take his class, lectures are boring and it has nothing to do with homework & exmas. The thing he does best is teach easy stuff hard as hell.
Terrible. He mutters through lectures blabbering theory, that he doesn't provide examples for, then presents you with homework, pop quizzes, and test questions that you've never seen. Literally. I cannot adequately describe how awful this guy's teaching is. He is completely oblivious. DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING HE TEACHES.
Dr. Van Kammen is a great guy, but his class is somewhat off-putting. The material covered in class is very easy to understand, but the homework, quiz, and test questions are completely unrelated to the in-class material. It's misleading to think you have a good grasp on the material only to be handed a pop quiz and stare in confusion.
The worse professor ever!!! Avoid at all the time!!! Average 37 out of 100 for the entire class at final. Lectures homework and exams are totally different at all!!!
Great professor. His class is challenging, but isn't that why we are in college? He is always available to help. Don't listen to these other complainers. They probably expected an easy A. He actually prepares you for the real world where you have to work hard to achieve something. Highly recommend if you actually want to learn something.
Enjoyed his class. You earn your "A" and it is worth it to be smart.
He is interesting and challenging. I would recommend him.
I was so excited to take this class, but it was a huge disappointment. He takes pride in giving impossible exams. Working hard in this class will not get you the grade you need. He gives out multiple zeros for the term paper worth 30% of your grade. I went to almost every lecture and the homework was impossible.
I can honestly say I learned nothing in this class. He doesn't know how to teach course objectives, and several students in class would basically engage in discussion with him during lecture, leaving the rest of us lost. Exam questions are irrelevant. Averages are normally in the 40% range. Worst professor at Purdue.
Poor teacher. Ridiculously hard exams. Lectures have nothing to do with the homework, homework has nothing to do with the exams. Always brag about and showing off how good he is at the subject. NOBODY CARES. If you are in his class, prey.
a great professor, very challenging. very humble. i thought i'd receive a C at first but got an A at last. the class is very interesting and knowledgeable, with funny jokes in class. a professor you'd probably not wanna miss out in Economics department.
Prof. Kammen was a challenging professor, but I have learned a lot about what it means to be a good educator from him. He goes out of his way to help you understand the concepts and is fair in grading. The tests are very hard, but as long as you well on your papers, do hw and earn extra credits, you will get an A.
This instructor is the worst I have ever had in my four years at Purdue. His teaching method is so bad. Unstructured lectures. Unclear instructions. The contents are supposed to be useful for econ students, but he doesn't explain things clearly. Also, the class time is like just his own showtime. Boring jokes. Also kinda arrogant personality.
HORRIBLE
Don't get me wrong, Van Kammen seems like a nice guy who means well, but he is a horrible instructor. The lectures are extremely boring and have absolutely no relation to the homework, which also has no relation to the exam material. I left this class more confused about Econometrics than I was before I took his class. Good news: HW is Extra Credit
Read and study hard. ALWAYS go to recitation it makes a huge difference in your grade and understanding of material.
If you are interested in Econometric, there will be another professor teach this class. Anyway, avoid Ben, he is not a bad guy, but he don't know how to teach.
The lecture is very boring. Also, the exams are very different that what he says in the lectures. You have to read the book to do well in this course.
Lectures do nothing to help with tests or term paper. Very poorly structured class
Avoid him like the plague. I was in Honors Econ in high school, and I have a D in his class. His class is hard for no reason at all.
Quick, honest breakdown of ECON 360. The most important thing is GO. TO. CLASS. it is extra credit and WILL SAVE YOUR GRADE. DO THIS. Exam Averages are 40% usually. DO THE PROJECT EARLY, GO TO OFFICE HOURS AND GET HELP ON IT. Do not stress too much. A or B on the project WILL MEAN at least a C in the class. You will be okay. Don't lose sleep.
Avoid him for no reason! Hw is conceptual questions, the lecture is code stuff, and the final exam is paper writing! I assume the average would be roughly 30%. The only reason I grade him 1, is there's no choice zero.
Very nice guy, but just does not teach material. He considers his exams difficult and just throws random things on them that you've never seen. Averages were usually under 50%. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you get lots of "extra" credit for being there.
A very nice guy. As a Korean international student who doesn't even speak proper English, I found the course pretty helpful in terms of my knowledge structure and career. I don't understand why there are so many losers being salty on this course, just quit eating bacon and get a brain. Go to office hours and talk to him in needed.
This class was stupid difficult. The tests are nearly impossible and he sometimes will assign homework online without announcing it. There is a quiz once a week every Friday that really play a role in your grade.
Econ 210 is not hard, not sure why so many are complaining about the professor. If you set aside a small amount of time to actually learn the material and skim over the chapters you will be fine. There are so many resources for exams, and attendance is over hotseat.
Learned a lot from his class. If you earn an A in this class , you totally deserve it. There is a project to be done, but if you start early, it won't be a problem. You ll learn how to use STATA and it is really useful for the Econs major. no problem set to be solved at home. ) Warning: tests are extra difficult but don't worry. The curve is nice
He's a genuinely kind teacher, but his teaching is really not very good. As a mathematics major, even I didn't understand the math behind what he was trying to do, and his explanation of the concepts just aren't good. Professor Van Kammen gets a 2/5
I don't know why people rate him unfavorably. He is my favorite professor. His class is tough, but I know that I am going to actually use the skills he has taught us when I get a real job. He really cares about his students, and he is easy to talk to. Work hard in his class - it's worth it.
Great teacher. His lectures and prepared materials are well thought out - and sometimes really funny. He's tough, but I really learned something. i am grateful i took his class. I feel like the bad reviews are from people who wanted an easy A. He doesn't give those - you actually earn your grade, and I like that.
He seems like a smart, intellectual man, but his teaching style is poor and difficult to follow. I don't learn anything from lecture, but only during the hotseat questions at the end of the class. My TA is a better teacher than he is. I would not recommend him if you don't understand econ and need a good prof to help you learn.
The Lectures do not prepare you at all for your exams. Just a terrible course in general. The only way you'll understand this unless you're a genius is if you find someone to help you or you put in the extra hours to understand it. (A LOT of hours)
if you have to take econ 360 take it with this guy
Hes a really good guy. Love his humor and passion for the subject. He does hotseat participation for attendance points. Sometimes it was difficult to understand the material but he was good about provided lots of examples and funny inserts into his lectures.
He is a good guy but very irrevelant exams that is completely different from what he taught in his classes.
The test questions are totally different from what he is teaching! The sample Exam is totally different from the actual test questions! Do not take this class!!! Trust me, he confuses you more than he teaches you! But he is kind, just the test and his teaching style is the worst kind I have ever seen in Purdue University!!!!
You know that awkward moment where the teacher asks a question that is so outside of everyones knowledge base that the room is just silent and confused? Welcome to Benjamin Van Kammen. He is the worst instructor I have ever had including k-12. He is a really nice human and a good economist, but wow he needs a different line of work.
ABSOLUTE WORST PROFESSOR AT PURDUE. Avoid him at all cost. I have never had a teacher this HORRIBLE for any class in any semester even including K-12. Nobody knows what's going on in the class, he'll make hardest exam possible and won't teach you anything that comes in it. All his classes are terribly organized. How he still has a job is beyond me.
Van Kammen is the worst professor I have had at Purdue. He's not a bad person, but prepare to be completely blind sided by the exams. The lectures, homework, and practice exams are not representative of what will be on the exams. There is no way to prepare for them. Good news is that F's are a passing grade in his classes.
Smart dude but he forgets we r not as smart as him and will completely jump over some of the foundations of the material. The exams feel like you r trying to solve a 100-piece puzzle with 5 pieces only. U will physically feel ur brain scramble for the answers I promise u that
He's a nice guy, but his exams represented nothing of what was taught. One question on the first exam was missed by 85% of the class and proceeded to yell at the class. The next exam 95% of the class missed a question and wondered how we missed it and bragged it was the easiest question on the exam. F is passing. Never would recommend him ever.
This class is essentially a very hard math class. I have 2 majors and 3 minors and had never received a grade below a B before this class. Van Kammen is nice but his exams are impossible, which is 75% of the grade. I studied more for the final than I ever have before and got a 22%. 2 hour, 12 question exam and half the class didn't finish. Avoid it
Get ready for the exams because they're nothing like lecture or the homework. He briefly goes over topics in lecture and expects you to figure it out from there. I'd recommend finding a different prof if available. I'm an A/A- student and tried hard in the class but wasn't able to pull it out. Best of luck if you have to take a class with him.
Van Kammen is the worst Professor I've had while at Purdue, and it's not that close. The exams are nothing like the homework and it makes studying irrelevant. He asks questions completely unrelated to the majority of his exam review. He is a good person and his lectures weren't particularly boring, but the exams ruined the class for me.
Microeconomics should be an easy class but he just makes it sooooooooo confusing. Our average on the exam was like 30. I don't think going to lectures matter if you don't care about bonus points for attendance. I learned nothing from lectures cause it's just so different from his hws and exams. He likes to tell some jokes though. Those are not bad.
I tend to dislike 730s, especially when the guy teaching makes too many dad jokes (they aren't that funny, but at least it makes things less boring.) He explains the course content well, which for a beginner econ course, doesn't surprise me. Overall, he's decent.
Very difficult grader and you have to pay attention to all the reading and lectures
I learned more in recitation than I ever did in the (mostly) mandatory lectures. The questions on exams and the program he uses for homework are worded terribly. A houseplant could make learning economics more interesting than he does.
He barely covers any material during class time and often times goes off topic. His PowerPoints are not thorough and do not cover the material properly so even though the content is easy, you will have to learn it on your own. His exams are very fair though and attendance can become extra credit at the end of the semester.
He is honestly the worst professor I've had. His PowerPoints are useless, and he doesn't explain things well in class. There's absolutely no way to do the homework problems, because he doesn't give you example problems. His exams are hard to study for and count towards 75% of your grade. Just do yourself a favor and take a different class.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had in my life. Had misfortune of taking 360 and 340 with him, ended up retaking both classes and got A- in both. His lectures are useless, he dances around topics without ever coming to the point. Hard homeworks, and impossible exams. If only I could sue him and get my time & money back. Avoid him like plague!
The lectures were not detailed, way too short, and didn't cover most of the material that we were quizzed on. The only way to do well is to read the chapter of the week from the textbook and take notes over ALL of it. There's no guided exam prep. Professor seemed nice, but it would be in anyone's best interest to take this class with someone else.
Great professor. The class is super easy up until the final project is due. The project was the most stressful "exam" of my life and I am very comfortable with stata and the concepts tested so take this as a big heads up. Do not wait till the last week to finish it. This is the kinda class you take if this is something you care about. I loved it.
The lectures don't cover all the information so you should read the textbooks, the exams were alright. I found the lecture pretty hard to understand.
I've never experienced such an incompetent professor in my life. I think he has zero empathy in understanding how first-time learners would view his material. The "difficulty" doesn't come at all from the content, but rather in his cumbersome, imprecise and useless way of teaching.
bro do not take this class. the only option is at 7:30am, and you don't want to sit there and hear him crack dad jokes for hours. he has a very strict layout for the quizzes and hw's, there's no mercy for late work. there's a hotseat each session, and you NEED to read the book. he will embarrass you in front of the whole lecture hall. worst prof.
Worst professor I ever have taken. Referred to himself in the third person in all his notes. Takes himself more so as a comedian than a professor. Teaches very little but still expects you to learn. Have taken him in two different classes and both had daily attendance quizzes that can be taken remotely. Both had a worthless paper at the end.
Great professor. Don't listen to the bad reviews. You have to work your butt off. It's college. What do you expect?
Professor's primary goal is to get the students to think he's funny. His grading system is completely arbitrary; in class work is an automatic A but he'll nitpick in great detail when grading anything else. If you're able to take ECON360 with another professor, do it. Wait a semester. Wait two semesters. Just don't take it with Benjamin Van Kammen.
Towards the end of the year I found it much easier to learn from the textbook rather than listen to his lecture. Attendance is still mandatory however, so during lecture all I did was read the textbook.
He's very clear when presenting the slides, but the slides make no sense outside of class, so you'll find the textbook more useful when studying.
Not much to say. Enthusiastic and obviously cares about his students and enjoys teaching the course. My pet peeve is the mandatory attendance. I don't see the point of it when all the relevant information is already accessible through the textbook. Wasn't a fan of the discussions either and they eat up a lot of time. Fun class either way.
Professor Van Kammen tries to care about his classes but his teaching style and use of time is wasteful. You are better off staying home and reading the textbook, if he didn't have a Hotseat question everyday that goes as a grade.
this professor is nice and would be willing to help if you ask for help but in terms of the lecture I didn't understand much but doing the readings and going to ta office hours helped.
Cares more about his well being and making jokes in the class instead of covering topics that will actually be used in the exam. Does not necessarily care about your grade really, and his tests are filled with "gotcha" style questions, making it difficult to actually perform well.
Can't teach.
Professor Van Kammen is a really nice person, but unfortunately, this amazing personality is completely outweighed by the fact that he is completely incapable of teaching. The class structure I was disorganized, and the exams are nothing like the homework and review, which makes studying redundant. Please take a different class if you want to excel
Professor Kammen is a fine person but he is just an awful professor. Lectures felt basically useless where he didn't teach things that were on the homework and exams were unreasonably difficult in comparison to what was shown in class and on homework. Do yourself a favor and take this class with any other professor.
Funny guy, lots of extra credit/insane exam curves, and fairly reasonable grading.
Later homework is challenging and he only goes over it after it's finished. Material is uninteresting. Be careful because practice exams are not as difficult as the actual exams. Lectures can be a bit awkward, he makes a lot of dad jokes. He is enthusiastic but I'm sure you won't be. The curve is generous at least
Professor Van Kammen is a nice person, but an awful professor. The exams were completely different from the practice and reve
Not a terrible professor, but he is pretty awkward and doesn't know how to properly engage the class, especially at 7:30 in the morning. Mandatory attendance with Hotseat questions every lecture was BRUTAL (again because the lecture was at 7:30 in the morning).
I hate to give Van Kammen a bad rating as he is a genuinely a good person that clearly cares about students and loves to teach. However, the way the class is setup is terrible. The HW are hard given that he has no examples, the lectures don't relate to much of what we do, and studying for exams is redundant and really just luck of the draw.
Buddy never shuts up but never talks about anything important ever
This guy does not teach in class, and will tell you to watch the lecture videos that are uploaded. What's the point of me going to class then? His main objective is to crack jokes. It's been 5 weeks in the semester and not for a single lecture has he taught anything.
1. The things he taught in class, like Stata is not needed in the homework nor the exams 2. There were only two practice exam questions given. For both exams, there is no cheat sheet. 3. The Final Project is a massive chunk of your grade, and he grades harshly. 4. You are forced to watch those 2 hours prerecorded lectures on top of going to class
He wasn't great. Lectures were boring and somewhat hard to follow. Tests were manageable but had to study pretty hard. Definitely would not say I enjoyed this class.
I fail to understand previous ratings. Anyone would be lucky to have him as a professor.
Very chill guy. i believe he changed the syllabus. Exams are not mandatory and he seems to be open for any help needed, and he is willing to adapt to requests. Great prof.
Teaches what he wants, regardless of what will be on the exams. Quizzes and homework is super easy, in-class discussions are easy yet also pointless, and exams come out of left field compared to lectures. Daily iclicker questions got really annoying really quick. Interact with online textbook to best prepare for exams. Was too energetic for 7:30am.
Outstanding professor for ECON 385. Also, one of the most interesting ECON classes I've taken so far.
exams were very challenging with stuff we didn't expect and a 54% average on the first class. he's nice and wants us to do well but is a harsh grader.
anyone critizing him for 360 has a problem with the course imo. He is a great prof and very willing to help. econometrics is supposed to be challenging. no final exam just project. if you follow all advice given in class its not hard to do a good job on it.
Quizzes EVERY WEEK is killer.
He had lectures every week with lots of Seinfeld references. Quizzes were alright, but super tedious. Some weeks we would have a midterm and quiz in the same week, and that doesn't include the iClicker he does every single class.
Lectures have mandatory attendance for points. Quizzes weren't super hard, but I relied heavily on recitation to learn content. He tends to teach what he wants and not what is actually important to know. You can tell he really likes what he does, but unfortunately it doesn't make up for how useless the lectures tend to be.
Professor Kammen requires attendance at lectures as well as recitation each week. You are given multiple resources to help you do well in the class. If you show up to lecture, do the work, and study for exam's then you should do well. Professor Kammen himself is a nice guy and he is clearly passionate about Econ.
